well, what the hell is alt country then?
I'd say it depends on where you are coming from personally. I get many
albums I feel are pure AAA but are promoted as Americana/alt.country.
When I point out the lack of any resemblance to country music as I know it I
get various responses. After hearing the raves on P2 for Beaver Nelson I
eagerly anticipated the arrival yet after 2 listens couldn't find the twang
at all. So is that alt. country? as opposed to The Trailerpark troubadours
who are so obviously country it pains me to say alt. (and they have talent

Jim, smilin (of course)
The main reason you aren't hearing Mandy Barnett
on your local country radio station is because it is on a label that is
not
 based in Nashville.

I'm hearing it on my local country station, but I guess that doesn't count
since I work in a peon market and program my own music. If the mainstream
press keeps up the full frontal assault over this record the mainstream
stations may HAVE TO play it. Or they can just keep watching those shares
keep on slip sliding away.

Pshaw. Since when does the press have any real impact on radio playlists?
(Don't get me started on my exercise-in-futility rant about being a
journalist.) I'd be curious to know how much Allison Moorer, the last
great
country critical darling, has benefited from her press. Anyone?
I'd say both Allison and Kelly are benefiting, at least marginally, from the
heavy press as they have both garnered appearances on the Opry and other
notable media/TV outlets like Letterman et al. The one place the press is
unable to effect seems to be at mainstream country radio and that is IMO
(and many others here) the narrow minded pinhead programmers and
consultants. A very few brave souls in major markets have dared to buck the
consultants and have not only started spinning Mandy and Allison but are now
reaching back for some Possum, Conway and other "classic country" artists.
The Richmond VA (market 56) station "The River" has a TV ad running which
segues from Tall Tall Trees to He Stopped Loving Her Today, showing their
willingness to dig a little deeper. In addition, the little bitty AM
country station playing a lot of hard core twang and virtually no HNC, in
Richmond, has seen a 150% growth in share while the HNC has seen a 40%
decline over the last 6 months.

Observations of the biz

1999-04-10 Thread Mike Hays

I pose this to all P2 HNC watchers. A rare Sat.
nite off for the band AND alone, gets me to watching TNN's Opry and then the
replay of the 65th Anniversary of the OPry special, and that's gets me to
thinking,
Is there a suddenly noticeable set of changes taking
place in the industry whereby ;
1. Artists are leaving labels in search of more
artistic control, and getting what they want.
2. The majors (the smart ones) are quietly signing
or pursuing from the "Austin contingent" (and others) the more traditional style
artists.
3. TNN/CBS has realized the demo they need to
program to and are moving in that direction with the "Century" which has started
well, More "Life and Times of..." trad stars, repeats with an emphasis on
earlier material, example, tonight with T Byrd doing a Price/Bush medley on the
Opry with Kelly Willis and the special with a decided trad bent.
It all seems to me someone has decided trad is
backbig time so lets get with it. More trad material coming to radio
too. Percentage wise up a lot from 2-3 years ago.
Killin time but I'd like to know if it's just me or does

Dale Watson 4/2 Richmond

1999-04-03 Thread Mike Hays

I didn't take notes on songs performed or anything like
that but I'll give a shot at a mini-review.
It was a typical Friday night in Richmond's "bottom"
with the usual assortment of hip-hoppers, UHI's, librarian's and bikers, all
looking for the hipets place to be seen ( or a place to get a cheap beer).

Former Richmonder Mike Hays and his band made a return
tot he old stompin grounds for the first time in 10 years and it was like magic,
from the first notes of Tiger by the Tail a packed Moondance Saloon was wild. An
assortment of old friends and family members half filled the house and their
enthusiasm was contagious, getting the rest of the crowd fired up early. 12
classic country and original songs later, it was time for the new King of the
Truckin' Songs, Dale Watson, but wait, The crowd's screaming for more (OK, so
Dale's road manager asked them to do a few extra songs so Dale and band could
finish eating). Not one to disappoint a frenzied mob, Mike and the boys
launched in to Good Hearted Woman, He Stopped Loving Her Today and Big
City. By then the forks had stopped and it was time for the main
attraction.
With all the smoothness of someone who's been doing it
for 20 years, Dale calmly strummed a chord and launched into Sweet Jessie Brown,
I'll Fly Away and a string of crowd launched requests. As if Dale's songs
weren't enough to keep a crowd entertained, he then launched into his new
Living Legends portion of the show where he only plays requests of living
legends. He must've gone through a dozen or more, ending with a stone cold
rendition of Paycheck doing Apartment #9 and then talking about having musical
legends in addition to songwriting and singing legends, at which time he played
"Luther".
It was break time, and I think everyone was ready.
Dale went to his van only to find it had been towed so like a bat out of hell
Dale took off to retrieve it, causing a slightly longer than expected break but
returning to the stage as soon as he walked back in the door and launching into
Good Luck N Good Truckin before half the crowd even knew he was back. He
then proceeded to whip the place intoa frothing, screaming, can't get
enough, blow the roof off the joint with hot licks and great songs one after
another.
Dale's in Annapolis, MD tonight and Arlington, VA
tomorrow night so get out and support this incredible performer ad buy one of
his brand new, white on black t-shirts with the great looking design as well as
any CD's you maybe missing from the collection.
Dale trulyis one whois going to "Fill Their
Shoes"

Need a little help with some research here, please. I'd thought that Tammy

Billy Austin. Yet I recently saw it credited to Fuzzy Owen and Fern Foley,

Just heard Lila McCann's first single from her new album, and it's a
dandy;

Hunted it down and played it on the show tis morning. To me, it seems like
they made an effort to get a real good steel and fiddle lick in the break to
offset the pop sound prevalent in the rest of the song. The beginning seems
a straight clone of one of Shania's patented twin (triple, quad) fiddle
pumped up to the max openers. Not bad but by no means a move towards true
traditionalism. On the other hand, I started playing Heather Myles a
couple
of weeks into the new gig and she's become my top requested artist. PERIOD!

It is a damn shame cause that's the song that has lit the fires and of
course after that they want to hear more so I oblige. The song is better
than just about any female cut on the chart right now but until
Rounder/Mercury decide to pony up the heavy dollars for promotion, there's
just no way they'll get past the HNC gatekeepers. If she'll hang in there
the music will come around to what she's doing. The industry just can't
sustain the level of radio and record declines of the past 2 years much

This is pretty evident by the fact that instead of folding to the whims of
Nashville and becoming another music publisher's puppet, she fond Mutt

Not aware of what her lounge singing consisted of in Canada, but before she
met Mutt she did a pretty decent straight ahead country CD which if I
remember correctly, received critical acclaim but little commercial
acceptance as it came out just as the POP boom in country was exploding.

Howdy,

My ISP and I believe that something from the P2 list has caused my e-mail
box at the server to crash two days in a row.

Has anybody else been having trouble like this? I suspect it may be
something with attachments to it. The trouble first started back on 3/8/99
and has happened at least once since then since the first repair was made.

The synopsis of all this information is this: I am going to temporarily
have
to set the list to "nomail" for a while as we try to repair the mailbox. I,
apparently, can still send mail out, but incoming mail is "trapped" and
inaccessible to me at this address.

Since this e-mail address is actually my work account, I really can't
afford
for the box to eat my mail on a regular basis. I'll continue to throw stuff
over the wall from time to time (such as playlists, local clips of
interest,
etc.) but, for the time being, will be unable to participate in P2 reindeer
games.

Hopefully, soon I'll be reinstalling internet access at home and will
happily re-join the list at that time. In the meantime, y'all play nice and
have fun at SXSW.

Please note-- as of this morning my incoming mail function is still not
working, so off-list e-mail to me should probably wait a day or two for
things to get back to normal. According to the server, I've got about 300
pieces of mail that I can't get to this morning. I'm assuming much of that
is P2 traffic, but if any of it was personal e-mail to me, try again this
weekend.

Take care,

For bang for the buck, the old standby 6 channel powered Peavey head with
reverb connected to a pair of 12 or 15 inch cabinets with horns is pretty
damn hard to beat. You can probably pick up a complete system for $400. My
weekend band uses one with the 15's and we play halls as big as 250 seats
with compliments for sound quality and putting the vocals out front. The
second choice is a Mackie mixer and a small power amp with similar speakers.
Ramsa Pro speakers work well and are super small with a huge sound.

one in English and one in complete, utter, and total gibberish.
The English ones are usually thoughtful and/or amusing; the others
are a pain in the butt 'cos you've gotta scroll through them, and they're
always MUCH longer than the English version.
Is there a computer whiz who can explain, in English, why this is
so and what, if anything, I can do about it.

I'm no computer expert, so the details might not be exactly accurate, but
here's the gist of it: notice
that, in the header portion of those messages, you'll see something like

Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
 boundary="=_NextPart_000_00C1_01BE5296.368AF140"

instead of

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

So what you're seeing first is a text version of the message, then a
Mime-encoded HTML-icized version of the post. If you were getting P2 on
the single-message basis, your mail program would probably handle the
message just fine, putting the two parts together and displaying it in all
it's (possible) multi-colored, multi-font glory. Since we're getting it in
the digest, we see it as two messages, one fairly readable and one
gibberish. On your mailer, do these posts then hose up the formatting for
all messages that follow? It does on mine-- Eudora Pro, although it didn't
on Eudora Light on my old PC. I don't know if there's some tweak I haven't
found yet on Pro, or if this is "an enhancement."

So, anyway, back to the question, "what can I do about it?" As long as
we're getting the digest and people send such encoded messages to the list,
I don't think there's much we can do other than keep hitting the page
down key. . .

I'm finally catching up with some relatively new music, in particular
Cisco. This guy and his band are very good, and I'm wondering if there's
any "buzz" about them in the music biz. I know there was a bit of talk
about Cisco on the list a month or so ago, but at the time I hadn't heard
the record, so it didn't mean much to me. The record comes off to these
ears as an appealing mix of Chris Knight and Jack Ingram, and the very
straightforward, simple production works well. So, thus far in 99, this
one's on my top 10 list. But, of course, as of Feb. 23, it'll have some
company. And now I've gotta add the Damnations TX to my wanna buy list,
too. Terry Smith

Re: TwangCast for Macs

1999-02-04 Thread Mike Hays

I think it is a little bit unfair to characterize mac users as a tiny
minority- -- It is also a fact
that a highly disproportionate number of internet users and web page
authors use Macs. I firmly feel that it is a grave error to ghettoize
us, which happens all too often.

No offense intended Joe, just numbers. I agree with your assesment of the
creative community and the use of Macs but under 3% worldwide is a minority
any way you cut it. Not a ghetto, just a minority. As to a large percentage
of internet users? They can sell an iMac a minute 24X7X365 and they'll never
establish the penetration of IBM clone users on the net.

Believe me, here at TwangCast we very much want to find the answer to
making our feed Mac compatible exactly because of the large number of
industry folks who still use Macs. Time to end this thread with the words,
when we get it figured out and can provide accurate Mac user information
I'll post it.

Jeez, it's not but $750 a year for royalties initially. $500 for BMI and
$250 for ASCAP. Once you start making any real money with a webcast they'll
want more but in weighing that exact option I knew I would have to program
based on a limited selection because I just don't see most publishers giving
up the royalties from BMI and ASCAP. Maybe I'm wrong but my guess is the
variety and quality will suffer as a result or they'll do what a lot of
people are doing, holding their breath until BMI or ASCAP send a cease and

the writer's licensing fees. Take a hard look at the site and unless I see
things totally wrong it seems to me another attempt to cash in at the
artists and writers expense disguised as a site offering "exposure". My
first impression wasn't that much different from some of the snakes I and
others have run across in Nashville and on the web who prey on wannabe's.
The "release" paperwork also seems a little vague. I wouldn't sign anything
over to these folks without a lawyer drawing it up. I may be wrong, and if
so, great. I'm all for legitimate exposure. KEYWORD-LEGITIMATE, as in

Re: Letter to the Editor

1999-01-26 Thread Mike Hays

I've been following this "thread" about new country versus old country
that spawned from WKKG's PD Scott Micheals' comments. While in many ways
I do tend to agree with Scott, BEFORE you all start flaming me just hear
me out. You never hear about Motown artists complaining about today's pop
radio not playing their music, even though their music, just like country
music from the same time period is nothing short of legendary. Alabama
has been on country radio for YEARS. On the pop-rock stations the same
can be said for The Rolling Stones. These artists have kept up with the
times and "rolled with the changes" Age has nothing to do with good or
bad music.
A radio station is a business, and a business has to make money to STAY
in business. How long would a retail store keep their employees and
remain open if they sold "great" items that only a few people purchased?
-Greg Breeden
WKHK
No flames here but I happen to know Greg and I also happen to know that
Greg, one of the better air talents in Virginia, was a part of the only
station to take WKHK down a notch or two in the last ten years, a station
called "The Bear" which was, according to Arbitron, slowly but steadily
eroding KHK's market share, enough so that it was bought by and shut down by
KHK. The Bear was closer to Real Country music with a mix of currents
thrown in than anything around and it had a 50 or 100K signal on a big (make
that giant) stick. It was best said by the line "Listeners' memories go
much farther back than most station research." And it takes people who know
and understand country music and the country audience (and every market is a
bit different) to program stations that can be successful, not Hot A/C or
Rock programmers lured by big $. The HNC stations are dropping like flies
off a meat wagon that was the ride to the top and is now the ride to
mediocrity. Only when country stations get local and back in touch with
their audience, put radio people in charge of radio stations and start
demanding from Nashville music the listeners really want to hear, will
country radio have a chance to make another return to the top. I seriously
doubt this will happen as too much consolidation has left the companies with
debt loads that are forcing generic programming into hundreds of stations in
a misguided attempt to save a buck. I'll never believe that a consultant in
New York or LA can tell me what my audience wants to hear, the only thing a
consultant can tell me is what the labels are paying him to tell me. Bring
any consultant to my market and walk down main street with me, leave your
ears open and learn something.
Mike Hays

P.S. As for the Motown artists, I can hear them in damn near any market I go
to, it's called the oldies format, no wonder they aren't complaining
