Yes, and the same 45w adapter also, although either can use a lesser powered

Re: Powerbook 1400 problem

2006-01-30 Thread GalBros

In a message dated 1/29/06 10:52:37 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Okay, good news and bad news. I went into the hard drive, Apple Extras
folder, and found Network Software Selector. There was TCP/IP. I selected
it. I had to restart the computer. Then I opened the control panel, TCP/IP.

Out of sight! Now we're cooking with grease!

There were several choices, so I'll start at the top. First was Connect
via:, I selected alternate ethernet.
Second was Configure:, I selected using DHCP server.
Third, it asks for IP address, Subnet mask, router address, and Name server
address. But all of these have will be selected by server beside them.

That is exactly what it is supposed to say.

Now the bad news. Netscape still says it can't make a connection. However,
I'm not disgusted yet because I'm trying to route this through my DSL modem
at home and it probably won't work here.

More bad news: The above setup of TCP/IP should work with DSL, Cable Modem...
any network setup. In fact, if you re-open the TCP/IP panel, the address
should be populated with numbers. If they start with 169 that means you do
not
have a connection with the network, however.

After checking that you have a good connection via the ethernet cable from
the DSL modem to your laptop (or if there is a router/switch in between), I
would try another ethernet cable.

I'm going to try it at work
tomorrow on that network. That's where I really want it to work anyway.
Any comments or suggestions about what to try?

a few:
1) what version of Netscape are you using? Maybe it's too old to properly use
over an ethernet connection (doubt it), or maybe it has not been configured
correctly to use via DHCP? Maybe it is setup to use via a PPP dialup connection?

2) To get another internet app on your laptop, you could find a AOL cd-rom
floating around somewhere.

I just thought of something; earlier I think you mentioned that, either in
MacTCP or TCP/IP, you had the choice of ethernet or alternate ethernet.

Do you have an ethernet port in the rear of your 1400? If you do, it would be
the last port on the left inside the rear port cover door.

Sounds like your version of Netscape is out of date.

I know the card is good, I know the computer is doing its job. I think
Netscape is my problem now. I will wait until I can get the software for
another browser such as iCab or something more Mac friendly.

Well, if your home PC has a cd burner, simply download the Mac version of a
browser - like Internet Explorer 5 off Microsoft.com - and burn it on a cd. OS
7.5.5 should not have any problem reading a pc cd-rom, I don't think.

Come to think of it, though, I am not sure what version of IE can work with
OS 7.5.5. I use IE 5.1.7 on my 5300, but it requires OS 8.1. I know the rest of
the list can help you with a modern browser for your OS, though.

To the lister who wrote saying I should be able to get on the net at home
through my DSL modem, you're probably right. However, the modem is
configured, I think, either/or, not USB and ethernet. My PC is using the
USB port to get on the internet, so I don't think it will recognize the
ethernet
port. I tried disconnecting the USB cable, but still no luck.

Aha; did not know you were using the USB connection on your modem. I think
they are either/or. And yes, you may have to reconfigure it to use it via
Ethernet cable. Of course, a cheap router would allow you to use both
simultaniously.

Thanks to everyone who offered help, I really appreciate it. I hope I can
return the favor some time.

By the way; The fact that the 3400c powered back up instantly also tells me

Before concluding that the card is bad, I would try to use the modem part of

I have obtained two Powerbook 3400's, which between the two of them
should make one fine, working machine. I have discovered what is more
than likely already obvious to most of you: the batteries in both of
them are now suitable to be fine paperweights.

You're in luck then, because, relatively speaking, the 5300/3400/Kanga
batteries are the easiest cheapest to find. Any Powerbook battery previous to
it
(Duo, 1xx, 500-series) are hard to find, not cheap when you do, and can be very
iffy with the charge (especially the 500-series). And 1400 batteries are
expensive; 2400c batteries are cheap and easy to find though.

My question is in a few parts: 1) What exactly is the difference
between Lithion Ion and NiMh(?) batteries, and which would these
(presumeadly) orginal batteries that I have be?

I am sure some better qualified list member can delve into the specifics of
NiMH (Nickell-Metal Hydride) batteries and Li-Ion batteries, and how to rebuld
them. I can tell you, as mentioned above, that they are easy + relatively
cheap to find in good condition.

You can tell if the batteries are original very easily; the batteries should
be Li-Ion, and say 3400 series on them. If they are NiMH, they are not OE
for thr Powerbook 3400c. They are in fact for the Powerbook 5300 series. They
can work in the 3400c, but the charge will not be nearly as good as one from
the
Li-Ion batteries.

There was another battery of that same style, for the Kanga. It will say
Powerbook G3 on it; they are a more advanced Li-Ion than the 3400c batteries;
I
*think* they work in the 340c as well.

one with a working battery and are the batteries easier to fix?

Other than the fact that there would not be any interchangeable parts (HD,
RAM, etc.), the 5300 can be an adequate little laptop in exchange for the 520c,
if you option it out with 64mb RAM (the same amount that a 1400 can have) and
get the 117mhz model, the 5300ce.

While it is true that the 5300 was rated as one of the worst Apple laptops
ever, no laptop is perfect. The Powerbook 1400 lister Mr. Johnson mentioned as
a
more suitable replacement is a faster laptop, but it also has its limits
(64mb RAM limit, non-cardbus) and they seem to be prone to sleeping sickness,
although it may be due to bad PRAM batteries. In any event, the PRAm batteries
are
harder to replace than in the 5300.

Replacement batteries for the 5300, in good condition, are about $5 - $10.
The 1400's batteries are about 10 times as much.

Also, while it is true that the ac plug was weak, it can be fixed or even
replaced with a more common ac plug from a duo/1400/2400/3400 type.

Finally, despite the lack of a onboard CD-rom, the 5300c has several
5300/3400 accessories and options that can make it one versitile little book.

(TO MR. JOHNSON: Of course, I am a person who not only owns a 5300ce, but
also owns a PB 150, a PowerMac 5200 and a Powerbook G3 Mainstreet!)

Re: Is there a 3400 or 2400 battery charger?

In a message dated 1/22/06 1:28:35 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Is there a battery charger that just plugs into the wall and charges
either 2400 or 3400 powerbook batteries?

There is a VST one for the 3400/5300/190, but you need a mains adapter
for it, charges 2 batts. You can use either the 5300/190 or the 3400 adapter
on the one I have.

The VST battery charger - the one always seen on Ebay for $5 or $10 -
requires the use of the AC adapter from the 5300/190 Powerbook to charges
5300/190
NiMH batteries. Using it to charge 3400c batteries requires the use of the
seldom-seen internal AC adapter for the 3400c. The internal AC adapter module
has
two ports on the outside: one for the 2-prong AC cord, and a small port for a
cord that runs from the module to the VST battery charger.

Correct me if I am mistaken, anyone...

Now, Absolute made a battery charger that charges 5300/190 NiMH, and 3400c
Li-Ion battery by itself; it uses its own AC adapter.

An external charger for the 2400c was never offered

The 3400c and Kanga (and the 2400c) drives are hot-swappable, meaning
cd-roms/floppy drives/Zip drives (just the external floppy on the 2400c) can be
swapped (floppy plugged/unplugged on the 2400c) without the laptop being shut
down
or asleep. The drive does have to be empty, however. Officially Apple
recommends that warm swapping (a.k.a. while asleep) be done on them, however.

The 190 series, 5300 series and 1400 series can be warm-swapped, drives
have to be empty as well, although Apple recommends that these laptop be shut
down before swapping.

Re: 1400 Mac OS 9

Hello, and first off I would like to announce my re-subscription to
this mailing list. I left as my 1400 died but after about 4 months I
used it and it started to work. Now I have the urge to upgrade my
1400 to Mac OS 9. At the moment I have Mac OS 8.6 and it runs
smoothly and I like it, but I like some of the features of Mac OS 9.
So please give me your thoughts!

I agree with the other listers; without a G3 upgrade in your 1400, running
OS9 , while certainly possible (a friend has it on his 5300ce!) , is not going
to set any speed records. A 233mhz G3 processor should be in the $50 range
now, or even cheaper is the 183mhz PPC upgrade, if you can find one.

I would also say get yourself the RAM module you need to boost your onboard
RAM up to the max 64mb. Then, instead of using virtual, get yourself a copy of
RAM Doubler. That at least makes the 64mb ceiling possible to deal with.

Finally, apart from some high-end things, 8.6 and 9.0 seem pretty much the
same to me, although admittedly I may not know what I am talking about. I
remember I once was interesed in putting iTunes on my main Powerbook, and
contemplated moving to OS9, but then I found a patch that would allow iTunes to
be used
it 8.6.

Anyway, good luck, and have fun! Patiently upgrading is half the excitement
of resurrecting old 'books!

cheapest Kanga was only $30 cheaper than my Lombard, and the 3400 parts
machines were going for over $125 on fleabay, so be warned. Of course,
this was during the holiday rush, and I bought my Lombard two days
after Thanksgiving, so the prices may have dropped a lot.

Especially since the lister in need only needs a PRAM battery and the cable
from it to the PMU.

With patience, the right 3400c, with a smashed/non-working LCD or something,
could be found for around the $40-$50 range. Maybe even a non-externally

I would be wary of I don't know what's wrong with it auctions from places

I see; so it does that when you try to boot it up using only the AC, AND

I am not sure (other members of the list may have more pertinent input) but I
would start with the PMU board located under the HD cage. Outside of
replacing it, checking to see if it is firmly seated on the motherboard, as

making sure the wire cable connecting it and the PRAM battery is properly

Nope. Just using the A/C adapter with no battery.

In your first e-mail to the list, you stated that:

-When I try to boot with the battery, I just hear a loud CLICK CLICK
-CLICK CLICK from the speakers for about 10 seconds, and then the LED
-in the corner of the display housing is solidly lit. I have tried
-the steps to resetting the power manager to no avail.

So, what you're saying is that when you have tried to boot your 3400c (a)
using just the battery, or conversely (b) using just the AC adapter, you get
the
CLICKx10 syndrome?

Just trying to fully understand what you're describing.

Well, back in the summer, I had to replace the latch on the display. I
disconnected the cable for the PRAM battery, but the wires came out and
there was corrosion on the plug where the battery and the connector
met. Since then, I haven't had a PRAM battery or cable in the 3400.

I think that could be the problem.

You just answered your own question. The reason why anyone would run an old
'Book as their main Mac is because of their finances.

My main Mac is my 5300ce; seriously! With 64mb RAM (RAM Doubled to 128mb),
running AOL 5.0 and using high-speed wireless, it's all I need. It gets about
80% of all the computer use I need daily.

Admittedly, my needs are small. I read e-mail, answer list e-mail, do light
browsing and (offline) write as a part of my job. And while I do have a
Clamshell iBook and a WS in my boudouir, the 5300 is handy, small, has a great
keyboard, has cheap batteries and does not need to be delicately handled. I can
sit
outside near my cows with a bottle of Bailey's and write for hours.

I could afford better and faster, but I can do without high prices, service
plans and recall/repairs as I live 50 miles from any type of computer store.

Re: Ethernet, Battery recondition and other things.

2005-12-05 Thread GalBros

 I also

will run on my powerbook 1400, if not, i will sell you :-)

A: The G4 drive will not work on a 1400. If I remember correctly, the
only CD-RW drives that work on a 1400 are SCSI, if there are any.

Well, maybe; maybe not. The only external cd drive the Powerbook 1400 could
use would have to be SCSI, but not an internal laptop cd drive.

Also, there are external (non-portable and slow, however) SCSI cd-rw drives.
There are also some external portable ones, but most of them are either USB or
firewire, something the 1400 cannot do.

The cd-rom on the Powerbook 1400 came in 6x, 8x, and a 12x speed variations.
The 12x is the only one where the cd-rom can be removed and replaced with a
faster cd-rom; there is a webcite that explains how to put a 20x laptop cd-rom
drive in the 12x Powerbook 1400's cd-rom carrier.

I have no experience personally with this operation, but I know a guy in my
local Apple User Group that once tried to put a slot-loading dvd+-RW drive in a
1400 using the method above. I think he had limited success, but I am sure it
was limited by the 1400's speed and RAM limitations (compared to modern
machines) and the drive would not be able to use the DVD (other than a ROM
drive)
anyway.

F: A 56K modem should work in the PC card slot without any special
drivers. The generic one works for my Xircom modem on my 190 running 7.5.3

I can attest that the Global Village and 3Com modems and ethernet cards I use
in my 1400 and 5300 both require software.

Last grayscale Powerbook question

2005-11-30 Thread GalBros
And now for a completely irrelevant subject:

I have a bet going on with a co-worker; what was the last grayscale
Powerbook? I say it was the Powerbook 5300, as I have one, but my friend here
says that
there was a Powerbook 1400 grayscale produced by Apple.

Please settle this friendly wager for us; we will defer to your judgement,

About a year ago I was on the road in a hotel room with wireless. In order

I also have some PCMCIA cards, one wireless cardbus PC Card - 802.11b,
one 56K FAX MODEM, but most important, a external CDROM Drive.
The question, HOW CAN I RUN THIS EQUIPMENTS ON THIS POWERBOOK.

Let's see. The PCMCIA (non cardbus, right?) cards are hit-and miss, depending
on who made them.

The cardbus wifi card CANNOT BE USED in the 1400, NO WAY NO HOW! Doing so
could possibly damage the motherboard in your laptop!

The external cd-rom could work, depending on if it is a SCSI external cd-rom
or not. Some cd-rom external drives, like the ones by VST and Addonics, can be
used via a PCMCIA adapter with the 1400.

As i said before, this is my first time on MAC OS, so, i know PLUG AND
PLAY. in WINTEL, the computer recognize the components and ask for the
drivers,
HOW IS ON MAC OS?.

Just the same, except for the part where the computer asks for the drivers(!).

No, Macs do not ask, BUT, installing the needed software is straightforward
and the components are not 1000 little parts coded in secret-squirrel computer
names.

In the manual i downloaded from www.apple.com appear that i will see an
icon of the card i insert on the slot, but, it does not happen.

Yes, you will see a generic icon of the PC card, and the name of the card
maybe, but without the software it will be unuseable. JUST DO NOT insert a
Cardbus card in your 1400.

Re: PB5300 + Li-Ion (-NiMH on fire)

2005-11-15 Thread GalBros
While we are on the subject, does anyone know the trick in getting a
Powerbook 5300 to use a li-ion battery from a Powerbook 3400c?

I had heard that a 5300 could use a 3400's battery (and I think I myself used
to do it). I know I would not be able to recharge the 3400 battery with the
5300c, but I figured I could use it and recharge it elsewhere.

My 5300c will not see the 3400c battery at all. I know it is charged and a
good battery, as I used+charged it with my Kanga.

Yeah, I understood what you mean, and what you were saying the entire time.

What I could not get you to understand, evidently, was that LEDs (most
likely)
do NOT make noise. Something is making the noise in your laptop, that
coincided with the LED being activated. PMU card, perhaps?

Wow. To think that I have actually been treating this sleep light problem

Not uncoincidently, Ian, I think I am fresh out of unhelpful ideas regarding
your
problem. My next suggestion *may* have suggested that the source of your
problem could be originating from a place that is physically impossible to be
the cause, unless you happened to be sitting on top of your laptop when you
heard the noise.

So, to paraphrase another Nixon,

Question about the Original Firewire: PB 5300c

2005-11-12 Thread GalBros
(:-D

Now, I know that's not fair... my 5300c, which I refer to as my 1700c (1/2
of 3400c -- get it?), because it and my Kanga share HD contents, has been a
steady little backup helper for mommy, with nary a flame-up.

Anyway, my question regards using a 3400c Li-Ion battery in my 5300c. I have
read that it was possible; you just cannot charge the Li-ion 3400 battery in
the 5300 powerbooks, and I *think* I used one in a 5300 at one time in the
past.

But I cannot get my 5300c to recognize a fully-charged 3400c battery I have.
And it is the one for the 3400c, not the Li-ion battery meant for the Kanga,
which I know only the Kanga can use.

Any ideas? Thanks,

Ivy F.

Re: G3 Buying advice.

I'm looking at finally replacing my 190, after pondering it for a while,
and I'm wondering which model G3 is the best. I want to run OS 9 or OS
X, but it doesn't matter. My main issues are that I want a DVD drive and
a good keyboard. I know it's a Pre G3 list, but I figured if anyone
 knew, y'all would.

Its definetely Pismo. Make sure you have lots of memory in it if you
want to run OS X on it :)

I don't want to start anything here, but a Wallstreet is my preferred G3
Powerbook over a Lombard Pismo. Mine, with a 500mhz G4 upgrade, runs 10.2
also,
with about 384mb of RAM. But before it was upgraded it was a 300mhz and it
still ran OSX.

Lombards and Pismos seem (to me) to be a little buggy as far as their
processors. I have heard of many of them conking out from a bad ROM or
something; and
they are way more expensive to replace.

Wallstreets, for one thing, have two PC card bays. Now for a Pismo, with its
internal airport setup, that is fine, but what about the Lombard? Go wireless
with it, and you can forget using a FW pc card. Wallstreets offer more
expansion options, in my opinion.

Finally, if you're planning to continue to use any of your 190 accessories
(??? Expansion bay HD? ZIP module?) then perhaps the Kanga G3 is your best bet,
as it can use Powerbook 190-5300 accessories. Of course, no built-in DVD
capabilities with that option.

Good luck,

Ivy

The cost of the upgrade alone is probably more than a Pismo.

Well, it WAS a G3. It did everyting it does now as a 300mhz G3 machine; just
not as fast (obviously).

I bought mine off Craigslist locally (AL) for $350.00. that's less than a

Yup, cache failures on Lombards are common, and Pismo processors can be
damaged when pluging/unplugging them.

But in the tens of G3s I've worked on I've had FAR more issues with
Wallstreets - non-booting, battery charging and power management problems
than on the Lombards and Pismos put together.

Good point. I guess they all have problems. But the problems I have seen in
Wallstreets -- basically the ones you mention above -- do not tend to cost as
much as a replacement processor, especially Lombard/Pismo processors.

Wallstreets, for one thing, have two PC card bays. Now for a Pismo, with
its
internal airport setup, that is fine, but what about the Lombard? Go
wireless
with it, and you can forget using a FW pc card. Wallstreets offer more
 expansion options, in my opinion.

What expansion would you want with the Pismo ?

Well, there's SCSI pc cards, G wifi cards, flash cards, probably more. But
offhand, just the option to expand is valuable.

I agree that unless you need SCSI then the Lombard isn't a preferred option.

But to add FW, AP and USB to your Wallstreet you'd continually be changing
cards and carrying cards and dongles with you - all built in on a Pismo.

Yes, I do have a bunch of accessories. I guess it all depends on what you
need your 'book to do.

We also didn't mention weight and size - the Wallstreets are thicker and
heavier.

Also true. But I lift weights.

All true... and all of the above (500mhz Psimo with 1gb RAM, good battery,
combo, zip, sdisk, etc.) for just over FOUR TIMES the cost of a comparitively
equipped (but with External Combo drive) top-of-the-line Wallstreet.

Add a 500mhz G4 (GEE-FOUR!) processor, like mine, in the Wallstreet and we
still come in below the cost of a Pismo.

Try zapping the PRAM; Apple+Option+P+R until the startup chimes repeats four

Me So Sorry; I MEANT to say in place of the floppy module.

There ARE internal
Zip drives that work on the 5300, and there are external Zip drives
and CD-ROM drives that can be hooked up via SCSI.

Don't bother with a Zip drive. It won't provide nearly enough space
for anything this original poster wants to do.

Really? Wouldn't 100mb be enough space to install a Bios OS, or a BIOS
installer?

I only mentioned it because I know it is cheaper (and more portable) than a
external SCSI cd-rom. I know nothing of Bios, so maybe you're right.

Re: PB 1400cs CD-ROM Module Not Working?

2005-10-27 Thread GalBros

In a message dated 10/27/05 7:00:33 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

My problem started when the PB arrived and I found the
previous owner had initialized the hard drive, so no operating
system. He had included a 7.5.3 system CD, but there was no CD-ROM
module.

If the system CD is home brewed, are you sure it is not just an install cd,
w/o any OS of its own on the cd?

So, I bought a 1400 6X CD-ROM off eBay so I could install an
OS. Removal of the floppy and insertion of the CD-ROM drive was
simple, but when I boot up the PB using cmd-opt-shift-del for the
CD-ROM (the 1400 doesn't use the standard Mac C key command
although I tried this also) while turning the PB on doesn't work:
the drive's amber light blinks, I can hear the CD spool up, but the
screen shows only a floppy icon with a ? in it. It does this for
about three minutes, then turns itself off. The machine included a
boot disk with 7.5.3 which works fine, but that's as far as I can
get.

One thing I try in these situations is the tried true PRAM zap; sometimes
it makes an unbootable cd-rom boot, for me at least.

I've tried removing the floppy drive after the PB is powered up
and replacing it with the CD-ROM drive, but all I get is nasty
windows stating I better replace the floppy drive or else. I am
assured by the seller of the CD-ROM module that it works.

Okay, correct me if I am wrong listers, but you cannot swap any devices on
the powerbook 1400 while it is on, can you? You have to swap the cd-rom/floppy
modules while the laptop is sleep or off.

I tried copying the disk tools floppy to the desktop, but this didn't
work. In fact, I went into the disk tools floppy looking for
something (control panels, preferences, start up) which would do
anything. I ran Disk First Aid and it came up OK for the untitled
hard drive.

Did you try copying the disk tools system folder to your untitled HD?

Networking with my iBook would be nice, but there isn't a single port
in common with the two machines; I do not like the idea of buying yet
more adaptors, cables (the PB came with various serial and SCSI
cables and adaptors), nor PC cards when I am not at all certain they
will work any better than the CD-ROM. I checked eBay and there are NO
operating system installations for 7.x nor 8.x on floppies (plenty on
CDs).

Yes, you would have to either find a ethernet pc card or something, but
nothing can be done until you get your 1400 up and running an OS.

Any suggestions or workarounds to either get the CD-ROM module to
work or to get an operating system onto this PowerBook or for
troubleshooting? I've researched the LEM site and didn't find any
hints.

First, I would try starting up the 1400 with the cd-rom installed, and zap
the PRAM. Then, see if it sees the cd-rom (assuming the cd-rom has an OS on it,
as discussed previously.

Failing that, you could put a copy of the boot floppy's system folder on the
HD of the 1400, but I am doubtful it would see the cd-rom.

Finally, as a last resort, you could see if anyone locally could assist you.

Good luck,

Ivy F.

Hello all; long time reader / watcher of the list; just joined!

With the Rev. C module in the Powerbook 500-series, the thing to watch out
for is accidently installing the PCMCIA software for the Rev. A or B modules
(v.1.0 ?) while the Rev C is installed. Doing so will muss up the ROM in the
