RE: HELP !!! raid 5 problem

2003-10-15 Thread Simpson, Doug
thanks to all for the info.
I am backup and working after rebuilding - now I am looking for a way to
monitor my array.
I have looked at raidmon - does this monitor hardware?
Is there a specific monitor for my specific controller - "Compaq smart array
431 (chipset - sym53c896)
Thanks,

You should be able to hotswap the drive and then verify integrity before
the system goes down.

Obviously in some cases you won't be able to like when the drive fails
when the system is powered down. Sometimes it is possible to reconstruct
a raid-5 array that has, but I'd be very careful fomr this point on out,
you're in some seriously dangerous territory.

One problem you *might* be running into that you may be able to fix is
if you're manually assigning scsi id's to the drives. Linux assigns
device names based on the order that they are found, so if you put in a
new disk in a different place, or if your new drive was discovered in a
different order then your array might be trying to reconstruct itself
wrong.

Your comment about ls not working makes me think you had more than just
a single driver error.

Were you booting off of a raid5 array? You shouldn't be able to put your
/boot partition on (software) raid5 as far as I know.

What drive was it that failed, your boot drive? Did you install
lilo/grub onto multiple disks?

Any more information about your config could be helpful.

Well, the RAID set is not working then. The whole purpose of RAID is to
avoid data loss. If 1 drive out of 5 is lost, the RAID set can still
reconstruct the missing data using parity information, however, you will

suffer a large performance loss for this. The rebuild process should
have no affect on the integrity of the raid set, just a performance hit.

Something is either configured wrong or faulty.

HELP !!! raid 5 problem

2003-10-14 Thread Simpson, Doug
I have a compaq proliant ml 350 that is running RH 7.0. It is RAIDed to 5,
however, one of the 4 drives crashed yesterday. We hot swapped the old for a
new. Rebooted and crossed our figures. The LILO screen comes up and then
flashes into a text screen saying "LOADING LINUX ...". It does this about 5
or 6 times and then stops on the "LOADING LINUX ." screen.
We cannot access the machine.
We can see the drives flashing and it looks like the one drive is fgoing
through the rebuilding process.
With a 4 drive RAID5 we should still be able to get in - no?
Yesterday when the drive crashed the machine was not very usable - ie. could
not run "ls" or "find".
This is a bit strange for a RAID5 setup.
Compaq/hp has told us to wait 20 minutes a gig for the rebuild - 6 hours.
We are wondering if this six hours will be wasted time.
Has anyone seen this behavior before?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
We think the boot sector is corrupt and that is why it will not boot. So we
are waitning fo rhte stripping to finish and then fix teh boot sector.

Anyone?

Doug

smartmontools

2003-10-13 Thread Simpson, Doug
I just had a SCSI drive failure on one of my RH boxes. This one is running
7.2 and a RAID 5. A user contacted me to tell me that they could not get to
their shared drive. I would like to set something up that would contact me
if the drive dies.
I have setup a Nagios server but it is only telling me if the server is off
line (which it was not).
I would like to monitor the SCSI drives themselves. I found the
SMARTMONTOOLS and the SMARTSUITE. I tried it on my own box.
Does any one use these utils and could you tell me if you like them and if I
can set them up to send me info?
Or does anyone have a plugin for Nagios that may do this monitoring?
Or any other insight would be great.
Thanks,
Doug

Go into the preferences and then the CDROM and Recorder Setup tab. Highlight the Drive
and click on "edit" below. Make sure the box is checked where it says "This Drive is a
CD writer"
Now try your burning.

cd burning software

2003-09-30 Thread Simpson, Doug
Hello,
I am having trouble with Gnometoaster.
Error message I am getting is "Error trying to open /dev/scd0 . . ."
What I have found is that it might be my kernel. I am not running a scsi
cdrw, but ide. What I found points to this.
Question is this solvable without reconfiguring my kernel?
And/Or does nayone have a different suggestion for cd burning software (I
like free).

I just needed this for some user-amde rpms ;-)

Just add your library-paths to

# /etc/ld.so.conf

and run

# /sbin/ldconfig -v

Your paths will be recognized like mine ...

# cat /etc/ld.so.conf | grep /usr/local/lib
/usr/local/lib

# /sbin/ldconfig -v
[...]

/usr/local/lib:
libgpgme.so.6 -> libgpgme.so.6.3.6
libksba.so.0 -> libksba.so.0.7.1
libgcrypt.so.1 -> libgcrypt.so.1.4.1

[...]

That's all ...

kind regards

Re: WEBSITE HACKED PREVENTION URGENT

2003-08-29 Thread Doug Finch
Vijaya,
I am not sure what country you are from but if your site has sustained
monetary damages (traceable damages) of $1000.00 or more you should also
report this to the FBI. Other than that, I would be very leery of using
that windows server until it has been completely reformatted. Whether
or not you go with Linux or back to Windows is up to your requirements.
I know that I worked in a place that required we use a Win2K server for
a web site and it eventually got hacked into by some Chinese group. The
NSA has published an exhaustive booklet on hardening Win2K boxes and I
would recommend downloading that PDF document and going through it...if
you are planning on staying with Win2K. The biggest difference between
the standard install of server 2K and Linux is that Windows defaults
everything "ON" to make it easier to get up and running while Linux
requires you to turn on what you need to get it running. The reason
that I say you should not feel comfortable with that existing Win2K
server is because you do not know if a root kit has been installed or
your kernel modified. You don't know what hidden directories you may
have on there. For all you know, your corporate server may be serving
out illegal materials - i.e. child porn or warez software - or both. I
would get another server in place ASAP and take that one down for
careful analysis and choose my fate from there. A rash decision one way
or the other may land you in a worse predicament down the road.
Hope that helps.
DF

Thinking of switching to Linux (from Mac!) and have a fewquestions

2003-08-14 Thread Doug Lerner
I am seriously thinking of switching from Mac OS X to Linux for several
reasons. One is I just don't like being "captive" completely to one company
for all my hardware and software. I like the freedom and choice available in
Linux.

Another is I have been having serious problems with Apple hardware quality
lately. Anybody interested can read about it in my personal blog at

http://injapan.net/.1c3eecb8

I'm not completely inexperienced in Linux. I also have a Linux box running
Redhat 9.0 which I use for a forums server. And I have used both Gnome and
KDE somewhat, and have installed Linux several times on different machines.
So I'm not worried about that so much.

But I've never used Linux day-to-day as my main workstation and have a few
questions:

(1) Can somebody recommend a good quality, not too heavy, not overly
expensive notebook computer for day-to-day work in Linux?

(2) Do Linux and most Intel-based notebook computers support multiple
(external) monitors, either as a second monitor or as a mirrored monitor? I
often give presentations and need to connect my notebook computer to a
display projector. This is trivially easy with my Mac, and I was just
wondering if it would be as easy with Linux?

(4) I do my work mostly in English, but with a lot of Japanese mixed in. Is
setting up Linux to support Japanese reading and also input not-too-hard?
I've tried doing this before in previous versions with mixed success. Are
there sufficient applications which support Japanese, such as a good email
client?

Thanks!

Doug Lerner, Tokyo

Re: Could not start kdeinit?

2003-08-14 Thread Doug Lerner
Well, I found the cause. Actually, a friend came over and looked at it and
he found the cause.

I had upgraded this system from RH 7.4 to RH 9.0. Apparently when you do
that some old shared libraries were left that conflicted. I would have never
in a million years found that.

Anyway, he found it by manually issuing the "kdeinit" command and reading
through the error messages (which don't appear when you start up from
login).

He deleted the conflicting libraries and KDE started up fine.

I am the manager over the IS/IT department and it's OK with me. I am
very familiar with RH but was interested in an article that might relate
to installation on a laptop - a Dell in particular.

RH9 + Win2K

Question:
Anyone know of a good article on dual-booting RH9 and Win2K on a Dell
laptop? I am interested in doing this but it is a company laptop and
don't want to screw anything up - it was an expensive one. The laptop
is a Dell Precision M50 with 1.8Ghz P4 and 512MB RAM on a 50GB HD. Any

Could not start kdeinit?

2003-08-14 Thread Doug Lerner
I can't start up KDE. When it first starts, a little, plain, X-window-like
error dialog appears that says "Could not start kdeinit".

Then things spin about a bit and I am back at the login screen. If I change
my session to Gnome I can get in again.

I reinstalled all the KDE packages (30 in all) from the Redhat 9.0 CD-ROM,
but that didn't change anything.

Anybody else have this problem? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

doug

RE: Equivalent to SuSE's YAST fo package management?

2003-08-14 Thread Doug Finch
I know what you are talking about with YAST2. I used SuSE for several
years and really liked it. I ended up with Red Hat because that seems
to be the standard in the US. YAST was a very functional tool that
allowed you to do quite a bit. I get frustrated with what seems to be a
limitation with RH. I overall like RH but it will be a long time before
RH is a usable desktop for average users whereas I see SuSE gaining
ground more quickly.

I did ask, and they said no. Apple "customer support" over the past few

and with the prices they charge - that they would be anxious to make

I've used ATOK on my Mac before. I find it roughly equivalent to Kotoeri -
the standard Mac input system, because I don't really do anything fancy. I
usually just convert one or two words at a time. I'll check it out though.

It seems to be broken for all users. No clues, as far as I can see, in
/var/log/messages.

I downloaded KDE 3.1.3 to see if I could install that, but I am not sure
what to do, to be honest. "rpm -I" each of the 30 packages? When I try that,
though, I keep on getting "dependency" errors.

Indeed it does! You should check out version 5 - lots of new, neat features!
I have it running on Redhat 9.0 at http://inJapan.net.

p.s. Yes, I do work for Web Crossing. But I started as an enthusiastic
customer! :)

p.p.s. There is a free version too now - an Apache/Sendmail/FTP server
integrated system with object oriented user database, completely web
configurable. This is a very easy alternative that lets you provide email
and web pages for you and your friends - without even having to provide user
accounts inside Linux!

-> and this placed it back on my toolbar.
Maybe this will help someone else.

up2date icon problem

2003-07-15 Thread Doug Finch
On RedHat 9.0 the up2date icon is distorted on the toolbar. It appears
not as a circle but as a vertical line and it is hard to tell whether it
is red or blue. This has happened on two different machines that I have

Re: Help! Monitor won't wake up from monitor sleep mode.AnythingI can do?

2003-06-28 Thread Doug Lerner
Just to let you know, all's well that ends well.

My server software (Web Crossing - great software - and there is a free
version now too!) allows server-side scripting. So I was able to execute a
Linux "reboot" command via the scripting software and safely restart.

I guess I could probably create a "safe terminal" app in Web Crossing
server-side JavaScript if I wanted to take the time. :-)

Anyway, the monitor was *not* dead. So even though I tried two separate
monitors, that was insufficient information. The signal was just not being
delivered.

It's probably a bug in the screensaver, which I have now turned off.

I guess my next step is turning on SSH services so I can login remotely when
needed. Is that really safe? :-)

Thanks everybody, for all your suggestions.

Re: Help! Monitor wont wake up...

In my case this wasn't an upgrade from RH8. It was a clean install on a
brand new computer with newly formatted hard disks.

I'm still deciding what to do. Maybe I can get a serial cable and login via
the modem port somehow from another machine...?

Unfortunately - and this was bad on my part I guess - I didn't leave *any*
way to get into the Linux server except directly. My thinking here was noble
- until I understood the security issues involved I didn't want to allow any
access except via server system I am running, which just uses 80 (http), 21
(ftp) and 25 (SMTP).

If I could SSH in I would be less hesitant about just restarting it because
then even if the graphics board had died I would be able to get back in and
do whatever else needs to be done remotely.

As an aside, after I am back in, what do I need to do to give me (and just
me) SSH access to the system?

Yes. That will be my last resort. The reason I am hesitant is that I am
running a forums server on this machine and unless I can manually restart it
after Linux starts up again people won't be able to connect.

I was worried that this was a graphics card problem. If the graphics card is
dead then I can't access do backups, start up different things that are not
in rc.local yet, etc.

So I was hoping there was some other way of tweaking the video signal to
respond before resorting to that.

Help! Monitor won't wake up from monitor sleep mode. Anything Ican do?

2003-06-27 Thread Doug Lerner
I usually keep my Redhat 9 display turned off. When I need to see it, I turn
it on, jiggle the mouse and it wakes up from its energy-saving mode.

But right now the display won't wake up. So I can't see the Linux system at
all. It's running ok, but I can't access it. There is no remote login
permitted - I always do everything right at the console.

I don't even know if I am currently in a shell or not.

Is there anything I can do? I tried cntrl-alt-backspace to restart X, but
there was no reaction. I tried unplugging and plugging in the monitor
itself, but that didn't help.

I hate to just power down and power up, because that is always slightly
risky for the server software I am currently running. Besides, if the
problem is that the graphics board failed for some reason, after starting up
I couldn't get in to do anything.

Right now everything is running ok, but I do need to get into the system to
run backups, etc.

Anybody have any suggestions? Any secret Linux "wake up display" keystrokes
or anything like that?

Thanks,

Doug Lerner, Tokyo

RE: netvault

2003-04-03 Thread Simpson, Doug
This is the first problem. I have set the backup to stop and start a
service /etc/init.d/atria. The stop works and the backup commences to
success, but When it tries to start the "startup" script it fails. It has
failed many ways, depending on how I right the script. It either starts the
service and then just hangs (NetVault that is). The job does not finish and
I have to "abort" the job. The technical people have given me many ideas
but they have not helped. The script does work if I run it on it's own.
Here is the script as I ran it last night. I started using bash and the
support suggested c-shell. They also suggested the
/usr/Netvault6/util/shexec part and the "exit 0".

#!/bin/tcsh

###
# script for starting services after backup

/usr/Netvault6/util/shexec "/etc/init.d/atria start"

exit 0

The second problem is when the program tries to start a backup it IDs a
blank tape as "BAD" and then fails. The error message points to the scsi
card. I reboot the server and NetVault sees the "BLANK" tape as "BLANK" and
I can do a backup. Last night I even manually kicked off the backup myself
and it was fine.
Have you seen any of these problems? The scsi may not be NetVault. I am
just trying to narrow this one down to something.

I can send more info and logs. Just seeing if anyone has any ideas.

In the main configuration screen, select option 6 - Address Books (LDAP)

>From there, it's a bit tricky as you need to know the ldap information on
the exchange server. Select command 1. Then, type the + sign. It will now
ask you a series of questions. The first one, I used the IP address of the
exchange server. There are only two other questions you need something other
than the default. One, is where it asks you for ou= and o=. I personally had
a really hard time finding those on the exchange server. I ran a program
called gq on redhat, which allowed me to connect using ldap to the exchange
server and told me that information. The second area to fill in is where it
asks you for the name of what you want to call it, I believe it's the last
question it asks you. I chose Global Address List, that way it was familiar
to users.

Once that's done, type d and hit enter, which should bring you back to the
configuration options again. Now, in squirrel, the only place you see that
address book is when you compose a message. When you go to addresses from
there, you can search and display the Global Address List.

If you find a way to link up with individual contact lists, please let me
know!

I've actually been running this for a few months now. I would recommend

In the config routine, choose option D and configure for exchange.

Then, at the main menu screen, choose option 2 - Server Settings
In there, choose A to update IMAP Settings
Make sure (number 4) the IMAP server is the ip address of your exchange
server

That should be it. If that works, I can also tell you how to get your global

Hope that helps!

vncserver

2003-03-25 Thread Simpson, Doug
I am trying to get vncserver running on a RH7.3 box. I ran the "vncserver"
command and it created the .vnc directory and it appears to be running.
However, can I use my windows vnc viewer with the Linux vncserver? It is
failing. Also do I need to configure the /etc/sysconfig/vncserver file? I
tried this but when I try and do "/etc/init.d/vncserver" it fails.
Also for the http side do I need apache? It appears to be running httpd.

Configuring X Windows with Redhat 8

2003-03-23 Thread Doug Almquist
I recently upgraded my motherboard to an ASUS with onboard NVIDIA graphics.
I installed Redhat 8 and can't find the utility to configure X.
Xconfigurator is evidently gone and I can't otherwise get X loaded. The
'screens' seem to be misconfigured.

What's the new utility for doing this?

Thanks,

HELP!!! server problems

2003-03-14 Thread Simpson, Doug
I have a compaq server that is running rh 7.3 and connected to a specter
logix tape library and a sony ait 50 gig tape drive. My NetVault
software says the tape drive is not longer on line. I reboot and it
appears that all is fine and then I get a scrolling error on my screen.
Below is the /var/log/messages file. It appears to be hardware but is
it possible that it is something else. It was working and then I redid
the server and the only difference between then and now is the
"PowerSchute software from APC. PLEASE ANY HELP would be great.

Have you checked VMWare"s support? I have had smb service fail with a
similar error message when samba got dumped without removing the file smb
from /var/lock/subsys/. Close vmware and then start samba. If it fails,
see if /var/lock/subsys/smb exists and if so remove it. Then try again. If
after stopping vmware it starts ok, then you need to find out more from
vmware.

what i was trying to do was point out that, despite the
numerous positives in the businessweek article, there were
enough glaring errors and misrepresentations to pretty
much cancel them out. in short, linux fans should be very
wary of recommending those articles.

the articles are replete with subtle digs and ad hominem
attacks. OSS programmers are described as a "ragtag band",
richard stallman with his "flower-child hair" "plays the
role of karl marx" -- *that* should be enough to put
the fear of communism in any serious capitalist.

and then there's MS's craig mundie, still attacking linux
as somehow a destroyer of intellectual property with,
"It ultimately is a question about whether societies
are going to value intellectual property or not."
to which the author, unbelievably, writes, "He has a point."

no, he doesn't, you dipstick. and it's pretty hard to
take seriously any complaints from the rep of a company
that's stolen as much IP as microsoft has over the years.

and the conclusion: "It's a weird twist on capitalism.
But it just might work." it's *already* working, but why
waste one more chance to sneak in the anti-capitalism
dig?

like i said, in the midst of lots of positive stuff,
enough mind-numbingly stupid claims to make the whole
thing pretty worthless. just more MS FUD.

sadly, while the articles *seem* to be fairly positive towards
linux, there are a couple of stunningly egregious errors that,
by themselves, if taken at face value, would cause executives
to dismiss linux outright.

eg: "Before using open-source software, tech companies must
sign a license in which they promise to give away innovations
they build on top of it."

this isn't just a subtle misrepresentation of the GPL --
it's howlingly misleading, and it's hard to believe that,
by now, *any* even moderately competent journalist who's
followed the growth of linux could make this claim.

another example describes the SCO Group as having hired
david boies in order to "press its claims against sellers
of linux."

normally, i'd just go with "never attribute to malice
that which can be explained by stupidity." but it's hard to
accept that anyone could be *this* stupid.

regardless of the good deal of positive in those articles,
i've dismissed them as just more microsoft-inspired FUD,
dressed up to look innocuous. just garbage.

rday

p.s. and do we really need any more articles describing
the driving force behind OSS as "a ragtag band of open-source
programming volunteers ... scattered around the globe"?
i think not.

This should be doable. In fact I find it a rather strange configuration
that would set the default route through the ipsec interface. can you
post the output of ipconfig /all, route, and tracert ipofpopserver from
one of the windows boxes when connected? That is probably the best way
to ensure we are on the same page. I just DLed the the user manual for
ssh sentinel v 1.4 is that what you are using?

I am working on a vpn solution for windows clients -> linux server and
experimenting with cipe right now and am willing to learn a bit about
how a commercial version works so I have a larger pool of information to
draw from.

There is nothing in the FAQ about routing issues like this.

RE: please help POP3

2003-02-23 Thread Simpson, Doug
The remote clients are MS OSs running SSH sentinel. I connect to the
internet and then connect to the Freeswan gateway.
When I am connected to the VPN gateway all my traffic goes down the tunnel
until I disconnect the VPN tunnel.
The SSH client (ipsec) takes over the connection and directs all traffic to
the gateway.
Do you know a way to configure the SSH client so that it allows traffic out
to the internet without going through the IPSEC tunnel?
This of course would be an answer.
Any help would be great.

Doug -
Why would your client machine try to go to the lan via the ipsec tunnel
for internet traffic? have you told your client to route traffic for
the pop server though the tunnel? If you have internet connectivity to
get to your firewall and establish a connection, I assume that you can
also see the pop server.

Help me out here I am missing something or several somethings.

static 10.2.67.0/8) tunnel then
I cannot get POP3 mail. I can send mail.
This is what I have in my rc.firewall script to allow my LAN clients to get
their POP3 -

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p tcp --dport 110 -o eth0 -s 192.168.1.0/24
-j SNAT --to $external_ip

I tried adding this line for those coming in via VPN/ipsec

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p tcp --dport 110 -o eth0 -s 10.2.67.0/8 -j
SNAT --to $external_ip

This last line did not change anything. I still cannot get mail when vpned
in.

RE: Monitor Shakes....

2003-02-11 Thread Doug Johnson
5-7 turns...

take a ferrite core ( they come in all shapes and sizes,
the ones that look like a doughnut are the ones I use) and
wrap the power cable tightly around the core 5-7 times (do not
overlap the cable. Each turn must be against the ferrite). This
makes an inductive coil with a section of the power cable. The ferrite
in the center of the coil will remove most unwanted
interference from the line.

These ferrite cores are relatively cheap and can be found
at most electronics shops (Radio Shack etc.)

A good link (but deals more with TV Interference) can be quite
helpful with a number if interference problems.

http://www.arrl.org/fcc/tvibook.html

The link will cover a lot of topics so get a good cup of coffee.

Best Regards,
Doug

Nah, this is NYC. I do have an above-ground cable behind the house,

RE: Monitor Shakes....

2003-02-11 Thread Doug Johnson
It has been fun to watch this thread. Assuming this
is not a plasma or lcd display and since you have
found out that lowering the refresh rate to 60
solves the problem, we can assume that this is a
power issue. (Unless you live in Europe then we
have another problem ;) ) A CRT screen is extremely
sensitive to a magnetic field. That is why you
will always find a degauss button or function on the
monitor. This button applies a charge to a ring around
the picture tube degaussing the tube, giving it a
much cleaner image (and one that doesn't shake as
bad).

These screens are very sensitive to magnetic
fields (magnets or magnetic fields created by
electricity or electrical energy). The circuitry
is also very sensitive to RF energy (that created
by transmitters as small as cellphones, microwaves, PLC's,
the list goes on). But RF energy is not constant like
electrical interference. When the microwave quits running
then the problem will go away etc. That is why I think
that yours may be more related to electricity or a
magnet pull (AC in high voltage lines over the house
can create a magnetic looking problem as well.) If you
have a high voltage line over the house you may want to
consider harnessing that energy by (h, nevermind
that thought is illegal anyway)

The first comment you mentioned is probably the
best one you have. Put a choke (ferrite core) around the
signal cable on the monitor. It may already have one
or two (big fat round things close to the end(s) of the
cables). If those are there, then you may consider
putting one of those on the ac cable as well. (5-7 tightly
wrapped turns around a medium size ferrite core will get rid of
any signals on the power line you have coming through).
Many power supply circuits are not designed well enough
to remove strong signal problems on the ac line so that
may be an option. In the meantime you may want to keep an
eye out for something electrical close by.

As for the UPS, try running on the UPS and kicking the main
breaker off in the house and see if it goes away. These are
really fun to find.

Good Luck..
Doug

Subject: Monitor Shakes

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Okay, this has *nothing* to do with RedHat per se except as a pure
coincidence that I happen to be running RH 8.0 on the machine.

After moving into a new home, my monitor has developed this odd
"quiver." There are these slow undulations in the screen that are
there even if everything else in the room (everything except the
computer and the monitor, that is) is turned off. They even continue
to appear when I pull the UPS out of the wall so everything is running
of batteries instead of wall power.

The monitor refresh is at 65Hz. I can use xvidtune to modify the
frequence down to 60Hz at which point the undulations disappear.
Looks like a beat problem with the line frequency. My wife's iMac has
the same problem except I can't change her refresh rate to eliminate
the quiver.

Anyone have any clues how I can eliminate this apart from the refresh
rate? I've had one person suggest putting a choke on the signal
cable, and I'm going to try that. Any other ideas are welcome.

TIA,

roland

RE: KDesktop geometry for remote access via Cygwin/XFree86

2003-02-03 Thread Doug Johnson

Here
is the problem I think you are going to run into. Not only are you going to have
probmes seeing the menu but if you minimize the desktop (which you should be
able to do in your scenario) and then max it back up your start bar will
now be behind the desktop. This is because they are two different X programs. In
KDE the start bar can be started as "kicker" and I run it seperately. I don't
need the desktop for any reason since I do not have any icons populated there.
It is a good way to access all of your programs. In the meantime you may be able
to move (with the titlebar of the start bar - if available) the start bar
up a little. As for a setup to do this automatically I will wait for other
answers as well. Very good question.

RE: RH8.0 - Altering Security Level

2003-01-30 Thread Doug Johnson

It
should be in your iptables. Since I don't run the GUI I can't help you through
that. However, if you are root you can go to the shell and run ntsysv and
deselect the "iptables" option and then close out of that and run "service
network restart". Now you should be able to do anything you want. But keep in
mind if this is connected to the Internet you now have your pants down. Iptables
are great but it can be a bear to manually configure correctly.  This is
the quick way to unlock the security.  I always start with the install as
no security and then manually configure the iptables according to what I need
before I ever stick a cat-5 cable into the card. iptables and ipchains are
extremely valuable tools.

Good
luck,

More on lm_sensors

2003-01-12 Thread Doug Getgood

I had some more time to kill on sensor config today
;) and I had success!
I cannot find the how-to that got me running on the
LTSP Server again, unfortunately, but I recall running
/prog/detect/sensors-detect
depmod -a
and
sensors -s
although not necessarily in that
order.

Funny thing is that on a whim I copied the settings
from my duallie ( dual Intel P3 on an Acorp motherboard) and ran them on my dev
pc (AMD cpu and Epox motherboard.)

VERY different systems, but the sensor turns out to
work the same!
sensors-detect never did find the chip on the AMD
pc, but with the i2c info entered it works fine.

NOTE on i2c: with RedHat 8 it is built into the
kernel although I don't think the chip support is complete yet; with 7.3 I
had to download and compile i2c from the lm_sensors site to get it
working.

lm_sensors

2003-01-11 Thread Doug Getgood

I have recently upgraded some machines to RH8
(from 7.3) and I have a definite problem with lm_sensors in RH8: it just will
not work!

On the first pc I thought it might be a problem
with the sensor chip, so I tried windoze for a day, and the chip was fine. I
gave up on that one (for now) and did the RH8 install on my LTSP server since
everything else looked good; this machine has been running LTSP in RH7.3 for
quite a while now, and lm_sensors installed and worked perfectly the first time,
yet in RH8 I can NOT get any sensor data at all.

Anybody else messing with
sensors?
