girl's got rhythm
hey y'all... my sister (she thinks collective soul is wicked, to put this story into some sort of context) and i (no need for explanations, i defy them all) were driving home from our parents house tonight and i was dominating the car stereo. she asked me to play something goodyou know, like sloan or something. ok fine. when 500 Up starts, she goes this is a cover, right? :) hahaha, i laughed. no, but they rip off everything so it may as well be, i tell her. we continue driving. (it's a 7 hour journey.) an hour later, we were listening to _the great pacific ocean_ and when patriot came on, she goes now *this* is a cover, right?? and i laughed again. well, if it's not a cover, it's a huge ripoff of someoneit's driving me crazy, who is this a ripoff of??? she begins asking over and over again. steve miller? i suggest, tongue in cheek. YES she shrieks. they're ripping off steve miller! I laughed again and told her the story of how thrush hermit played an all steve miller set at edgefest, so maybe it was possible (i'm proud to say my knowledge of the steve miller band is fairly limited). oh. is this thrush hermit? she asks. yes. that's why i told you the steve miller story, i explain. she's smart, but only in certain ways, if you get my drift... well, maybe it's not steve miller. it's some crappy 70s band, though, they're ripping off someone like thatmaybe CCR, she continues. hmmm. well, now that i've read this story, it's actually a lot less funny than it seemed at the time. you had to be there, i guess. anyway, the new grand are here in calgary and they played last night at the night gallery. i was 7 hours away playing cards with my grandmother, and so i cannot report on sonic unyon's latest darlings. i will, however, reveal their current conditions, as reported by mike clive several moments ago we're fucking TIRED. happy season and all that jazz. sloan net is not crappy. love tara lee :) :) :)

PLUS he was wearing indie nerd glasses - he almost looked like jon dacey!!! :) has jale released *three* videos for their EP? long way home was shown tonight, someone mentioned a video for jesus loves me a while ago, and i've seen a video for double edge a few months back. how did they afford to do this? did eric's trip ever release a video for girlfriend as was rumored here ages ago? doesn't bellini look sorta like marc from len? did both pressings of the bubaiskull 7'' run out yet? that is all, thank you. tara ps/ pat from wagbeard is the sexiest man in the west. -- Richard is Richard Terfry to his I am the coolest guy in the parents, but to a Haltown Projexwhole world. audience, he's DJ Has Slam. - The Planet Smashers - The Coast, Vol. I, No. 6

hey... sappy records 008 is a two song 7'' by snailhouse. the two songs are plan and have a good time and are performed really well. it's pretty moody stuff. i bought one for catano after he whined for a whole minute and then i traded a state champs 7'' with julie for one. julie took the picture on the record sleeve, too. the lyrics are included. sappy's address is po box 25097 moncton nb e1c 5k2 canada also sappy have put out a thee suddens 7''. oh and jon b. is too modest - steamin toolie is the band and they're amazingly good. i'm still waiting for my dr. atom tape, though... tara -- Richard is Richard Terfry to his I am the coolest guy in the parents, but to a Haltown Projexwhole world. audience, he's DJ Has Slam. - The Planet Smashers - The Coast, Vol. I, No. 6
Re: Review of Superfriendz, Al Tuck and Pluto
On Tue, 5 Dec 1995, rod thurber transcribed the following from the Kevin Smith review in the Georgia Strait: [note: pluto do not suck. only justin sucks. :) ] being a sucker for the type of lo-fi, lemon drop pop found on the SFZ's Murderedords debut album, Mock Up, Scale Down. Live the group's i don't know too much about the technical end of production, but i'd like someone to please explain how _mock up, scale down_ can be considered lo-fi...i always figured lo-fi meant something along the lines of poorly recorded, albeit on purpose a lot of the time. this is not the first time i've seen someone refer to this album as lo-fi - perhaps the single and their cassette could be called lo-fi as the sound is pretty bad in parts, but their cd? i don't know about that. and pop sensibilities- but the SFZ have a noisier, more distorted sound that leans a bit to the Eric's Trip end of the spectrum. And while each group i don't understand why people insist on comparing east coast bands to *only* either eric's trip or sloan. in my lame opinion as a record reviewin' hack, i fail to see any sort of similarities between eric's trip (noisy, distorted, etc) and the super friendz (relatively clean but jangly at times guitar sound). put me in my place, though, if i'm wrong. oh well, what the hecky thump does this guy know anyway, he referred to al tuck as pleasant background music. :) one of *four* sloannet al tuck fans, tara lee :) -- Remember Montreal. ok pardon me for being so vague and stuff, it's what happens when you don't sleep much or somethin'... anyway, as i was getting all my records in a pile to take down to cjsw with me, i overheard the announcer on cbc (am) talking about a program coming on tonight that is supposed to feature people who started up their own record label everyone from cinnamon toast to loreena mackinnit... subpopjockbars
joyce asked: What on earth is a sub-pop jock bar? don't you read sloan net posts? :) seriously, if you've ever read one of the kids from ottawa's reviews of any subpop show in that city, you'll know *exactly* what they mean. jeremy explained it in explicit terms. the thing i don't get, is if the kids who go to these shows get treated so badly and the venue generally sucks, *why* do the bands return to those spots when duh, there are other places in town? for example... while most genuine music fans in calgary would rather frequent the night gallery, really big out of town acts (bands on matador, merge, and subpop, for example) usually end up at *shudder* the republik. this sucks because then you get lineups like spent opening for sandbox and the gandharvas and then seam finally coming on. victor, the guy who runs the place, doesn't exactly know what's cool (two years ago he asked one of my friends if he should book some band called pavement - he didn't think anyone would come). you also get situations where drunken trendoids from electric avenue come barhopping and stop off at the republik cause alternative is cool, dude. they usually show up with boxer shorts over their pants and proceed to spill beer all over those of us who actually want to see the bands. many a show ruined by these idiots. eric's trip *always* play the republik. jale, hardship post, six finger satellite, pond...all at the republik. the only subpop band i can remember not being there was nirvana at the westward. i don't know how bands/labels determine where they will play on a tour (on the fire engine red tour, it was whoever would promise they might get paid :) if anyone showed up), but i really like what colin and the bands on murder have been doing lately and *asking* people for venue suggestions and taking them to heart. surely with the budget of subpop as well as access to the internet and c/c radio station music directors, you (not you specifically, joyce, just whomever does these things) can spend some time figuring out which venues will be favourable for both the fans and the band. :) tara -- Johnnie Cox also caused problems for scores of professional music video makers. - The Coast CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm

Re: Thruster!! @The KLR mem. Ward Room
Thruster rocked hard, and were up to their usual fallen choirboy shenanigans. Spitting beer is a well-worn standby but playing shoeless and slinging sweaty socks at an audience of frat pledges is a new one. so the fratboy mentality of their fans isn't just my own perception. Something posessed the bassist to crawl inside an overturned garbage can repeatedly screaming Scotch Whiskey!. The sound was particularly clear, wow, i didn't realize the real mackenzies were in town. at least when you go to a real mackenzies show you expect to have scotch whiskey spit on you and you know the only nudity you're going to be subjected to is theirs. you get plenty of warning and at least they're only degrading themselves. and it was a treat to actually make out the words to their abusively ^ bitter love songs. For an encore, they pushed over the mic stands and rushed *you* said it, not me. in case anyone tries to turn around what i'm saying, let me spell it out for you. thruster CAN play they CAN write about whatever they want to, they CAN live up to that fratboy way of thinking as long as they want to. but they and their fans should be prepared to accept criticism of their actions, because come on, how can you claim to have an ounce of respect for the women who go to these shows when you're throwing around pictures of naked *objectified* women or (and this is just as bad) showing your approval by sticking up for this kind of behaviour because hey they're nice guys. whatever. i know a lot of nice guys and none of them approve of this sort of juvenile behaviour. i'm just tired of this silence surrounding sexism in indie rock. it's sickening when people are quicker to criticize so called political correctness (as the editor of ms. magazine once said, PC should stand for plain courtesy) instead of the hateful and offensive actions themselves. tara -- `Well, all my Sloan shirts are in the wash,' Mulder says sarcastically. :) :) fuh fiction fuh four :) :) ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***
les adventures avec moi, al tuck et les nerdz du super
my mother always said good things come to those who wait. and it's always true. i've been waiting to see the super friendz and al tuck on the same bill since they last played together at the oasis this summer and man, was i pleased to hear they'd be touring together this november. and then, pow, wouldn't you know it, i have to WORK. from 10 til 2. argh. but, as my mother said... 2:30 am. i'm waiting around for my supervisor to sign my timecard (ho hum) and i still have to go downtown to fax my mother my christmas list. shut up about my life, i know it sucks. so i figure while i'm in the area, i'll go down to the night gallery to see if any of my (drunk) friends are still stumbling around. i climb the stairs and turn around and see charles standing there talking to my friend james *f.e.r.* hayden. james smiles and asks how work is. ha ha. james helped me to find this job, he knows how stupid and boring and blah blah blah...it can be. we start talking. hey tara. i turn around and shawn duggan's there, with a smile. (shawn is helping them sell merch and what not on this tour, you know him from his day gig :) as a cinnamon toast boy). we talk of how cruel the road can be, how fun the road can be, and how freezing cold the canadian prairies are. so are you going to come back to halifax any time soon? he asks. well as soon as it's feasible, i tell him, ever hopeful. gotta go make the label a money making venture and all that. we discuss the state champs for several minutes. i jokingly tell him i don't even like their music and he seems rather shocked. you don't *like* them?? why? he demands. duh. of course, i'm kidding. he seems relieved. i'm not sure why. matt walks towards us and grins and we began a conversation about how they *might* be coming back in a few days to play at an all ages show with fire engine red and wagbeard. yeah, with al tuck, too. ooh, i'm feeling a lot better at this point in the evening/very early morning. charles sort of stumbles over to me and taps my arm...hey hi how are you he says in that voice that means either he's totally tired or completely wasted, perhaps a bit of both. :) anyway, i admire their tour poster (the colour one, wow, it's nice) and he says i should take it. i stupidly don't and some other guy gets it. oh well. al blew us away tonight. we really sucked, sums up charles. oh, well i'm glad i missed it then, i reply somewhat untruthfully. so...do you prefer tear-a or tar-ah? he inquires. you see, the super friendz have a history of changing the pronunciation of my name every few months or so. i tell him to think of this: to write my name, you'd need to 'tear-a' piece of paper out of a book. so are you going to come back east? yep, i say with a smile. al, by the way, has taken advantage of the very generous bar tab yet is amazingly coherent. matt attempts to introduce al and i, even though we had spoken before. we talk about the muchmusic appearance he made. so how did it come across? he inquires. insincere? he suggests before i can reply. i tell him that it was an interesting piece, what with those artsy hand held shots that whatshisname from the gracebabies (yeah, he's mike campbells' lackey in case you care) took. charles walks off to carry gear into the van and continuously runs into al at full speed nearly knocking him to the floor. al's guitarist, however, needs no help in hitting the floor. he's LOOPED!!! he falls over and tries to ride matt's amp while matt is carrying it across the floor. watch your guitarist he murmurs to al. watch my GUITARS?? al asks somewhat alarmed. no, your guitarIST matt says, pointing at el drunko. every one of them asks me when rebecca west is playing calgary and i guess at the 17th. al tells me he's supposed to be leaving little clues, little treats for the rebecca west clan along the way, sort of like a scavenger hunt. but, he slurs, i haven't left them a THING so far. drew comes up the stairs, we say hi to each other, james waves. it's time for me to take james home and me to get over to that copy shop so i can fax my mom my christmas list. james and matt introduce me to lonnie, whom james has explained earlier on to me is actually a former member of the Nils. and here i thought he was just some no name kid. :) wowza. james is in his old school punk heaven. good for him. :) we say our goodbyes, the super friendz promise to try to come back for this all ages gig and james and i are on our way. so you know who al's new guitarist is? he asks me, a gleam in his eye. no, not really, i admit. he's another former member of the Nils! I'm *lovin'* the Nils boys! (you have to know james to get how funny that last bit is). we laugh and continue on our way. and now it's way too late to be awake. i'm sure they're all dreaming peacefully over at marc's mom's house, getting rested up for the big drive to edmonton again. too bad they have to leave so early, we had hoped to

NO band in the world is completely independant, everyone is relying on someone for cash. saying that lunamoth is indirectly affialiated with a fucking arms manufacturer is like saying that james' boss at his real job runs zedd. he does. didn't we tell you? the president of zedd recordz is dr. robert kruse. our boss. :-) so how does he like nevada downs? everyone is getting paid, and it's just a matter of how and why. and that's what people were interested in talking about, i thought. not really - people are interested in going blahblah they're indie blahblah they're not and not really talking about it. whoever posted those corporate affiliation charts a while back was more on the point, i think. so shut up. otherwise, we might say something that contradicts your point of view. :-) refer to the rules of being catano. james, record mogul mike, member of the bored.

excLAME :) reviews the state champs, hooray!
yay, i just finished delivering four billion copies of exclaim all over freezing cold snowy calgary and finally got a chance to read it for myself. well i'm just so darn proud of those state champs, i'm gonna post the review for all to see. who cares if its self serving. i gotta eat somehow... it's funny how sometimes it bothers me when a band sounds pretty damn close to another band, but other times it doesn't bug me at all. With Pavement clones, I never seem to mind. Maybe it's because Pavement mixes many interesting elements into their sound, so you would have to sound pretty interesting to remind me of them. Of course, tribute bands always suck, Van Wailin' anyone? Anyhow, file this band under heavy Pavement Influence along with Spool, Butterglory, Sammy, and their ilk. This 7'' is the debut release on Daydream Records, a lo-fi friendly Halifax thang. _Nevada Downs_ is a good release. Nary a dud to be found. Three cheers for the State Champs. - Scott Ingram *whew* for a second there, i thought they were gonna get trashed tara with newsprint all over her fingers ps/ could someone with discorder please email me the state champs review from last month OR send me directions to discorder online? thanks muchly. my label mates are HOGGING the review sent to US all them themselves. jerks. :) -- ...when we first started, Ian, Rob and I, our first band was called Nabisco Fonzi. - Joel Plaskett ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***
thee very end, one last sloan net get together
so the pop explosion was over but i had one last night in halifax with my good friends. many of the sloan net kids who had travelled from across canada and the states had to leave on sunday, which is too bad. i hope they come back this summer. jim cooper, grumpy old man to all of you, called me up and announced he had taken the day off work to hang out. so me, being the genius i am, asked him if he'd like to meet up around six. he so gently pointed out that um, he took the *day* off work and... oh. duh. since roderick was at school and i didn't have a housekey, jim came over and we watched some of the pop explosion (julie julie julie) on video for a while. once rod came home, i resumed my summer job as halifax sloan net social convenor geek and called up a few of my friends to come over for one last sloan net get together. warren, the only other non halifax sloan net kid still left in town met up with james and i down by bud the spud and jim and rod went off to buy groceries for our last supper. :) james soon left for ckdu to interview snfu. warren and i went up to the murderecords offices so i could say Happy Birthday to marc and give him a big hug n' kiss. on the way up there, i ran into al tuck who i had interviewed two weeks earlier on the phone. just before hanging up he said to make sure to say hi and introduce myself once i got to halifax so i said hello, i'm tara and we chatted for a few minutes. i told him it was marc's birthday and he was like are you serious?? wow i'd better get my act together and get him a little something. anyway, then i went and planted a big one on marc's cheek. woo hoo. then we hung out at kinko's for an hour, like losers. we missed the simpsons. boo!! :( anyway, we finally got back to the house and soon the guests wandered in. heather, katrina, james, jim, warren, and later on, brendan, and me and rod sat around and ate vegetarian chili and salad and watched the pop x on video like the true losers we are. and although this might not sound very exciting to you all who were not there, it felt very comfortable and nice and relaxing to just hang out together. kinda low key but very nice. brendan performed his special light show for us all, too. what a treat that was! and he brought candy over for us all to sample. mmm yummy! and then i had to say goodbye to my friends, one by one. not a happy moment but knowing that i'm coming back made it a little easier. at around 10 pm, the last of our guests left, those two daydream scallywags, jim and james. and then me and roderick stayed up late watching all the east coast videos he had never seen cause he's lame and doesn't have cable. can you believe it, he'd never even seen french inhale? the next day, fire engine red was scheduled to be interviewed on james' show cod is my copilot at ckdu. it was the funniest thing ever!! they had a wicked wicked time and they loved james to death. actually they just loved halifax in general and if it wasn't for the fact that lorrie loves his calgary girlfriend so much, james and brooker say they'd move there in a second. :) the saddest part ever comes next. i had to say goodbye for the last time. yuck. i don't even want to talk about this part. you have all had to say goodbye to someone you love probably so you know how it feels. we got into the fire engine red van once again and hit the road and listened to Blue Mountain and didn't speak much. there wasn't much to say. -- ...when we first started, Ian, Rob and I, our first band was called Nabisco Fonzi. - Joel Plaskett ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***
for those about to rock...where did you get the energy anyway?
Sunday Night, Bar Show, Birdland, Last night of the Halifax Pop Explosion Wooden Stars were up first and i only caught the last two or three songs and they were bizarre. i'm afraid i didn't see enough of it to fully appreciate what they were trying to do. a LOT of the really cool :) boys i know were raving about them, though. during the last bit of the last song, one of the wooden stars went kind of mental. he just jumped around and up and down on stage and threw his guitar down and was going completely insane. at first, it was really funny. then it was sort of silly. then it got almost annoying and stupid, but that's only my jaded yet oh so naive opinion. :) hometown heroes the Super Friendz were up next. it was very crowded and a big stupid bouncer was in the middle of the stage so everytime i tried to videotape more than one super friend, i got mr. big tough guy's head in the shot. nice. mostly i was videotaping right up matthew or charles' nose, because of where i was standing. yay! they had a typical high energy, fun show, with matt wearing an extremely tight (ugh) tshirt again and drew with his leather uppers shirt. they played up and running, down in flames, 10lbs and about 6 or 7 more but i can't remember at this point anymore. it was so sweet, in 10lbs, the last song of the night (except for the super friendz theme song), when matt sang cause you are as pretty as pretty times two he was smiling and pointing to someone out in the audience. i don't have a clue as to who that might be, but if you're a romantic sap like me, you can pretend it was to that special someone. or maybe joel plaskett. you never know. their set was very very short, as were most sets at the pop x and by this time, everyone was trying to keep to the schedule so that we could get some sleep, catch a plane, whatever. jale was up next and i had to go up to the raised area of birdland, with all the chairs and tables, to sit down. tired tired tired. i really didn't like all the new songs, but i LOVED ali (they played it on realtime during their live show this past saturday) and superstar of course. the new songs just didn't grab me the way stuff like lung and i lied did. perhaps in time. it was a typical jale performance in that i was left wondering why i don't feel excited seeing jale even though i like their songs for the most part. i guess i wished they had a bit more on stage banter or some sort of moving around on stage. but i guess that's not their thing. after jale played, patrick pentland and shelley got up on stage to say thanks to everyone and blah blah blah. what a good host patrick was, making sure things were cool at the bar all the time. and for you kids who don't think it's cool to wear your nirvana shirts anymore, it's officially ok again, patrick wears his. then they said stick around for the dambuilders, and surprisingly, a few people did. the dambuilders came out on stage and were dressed up, actually. very very slick looking! :) i hope they felt proud to be headlining. although as julie had told eric earlier in the day, it's hard being the headlining band cause everyone is so tired and has to go home and stuff on sunday night so not so many people see you. it's a good thing they had the all ages show earlier i guess. about three songs into their set, rod and i realized they were doing the exact same set they did for the all ages show and much as i loved it, i was on the verge of falling down from sleepyness so we made the wise decision to go home. unfortunately it was still HURRICANE season outside. we walked home in the freezing wind and rain and i think i had an earache but it's probably from foolishly not wearing my earplugs all that much. the next morning, i woke up and the first thought in my head was, who is playing this afternoon, which show do i have to be at now??? and i was sort of panicking because i could not remember the schedule but then i remembered, it was all over. and i felt sad. and i'd like to be able to write some amazing summing-it-all-up-in-a-simple-yet-profound way, but i can't. i do want to say that despite it's shortcomings, it was the best week of the year for me. and i understand how thankless a job being the organizer or a volunteer for an event like this can be and how easy it is for outsiders to criticize things (guilty!!!), but really. when it comes down to it, even though i was sad it was over, i came away from it with a very good happy feeling in my heart. make sure you come next year. homesick, tara -- ...when we first started, Ian, Rob and I, our first band was called Nabisco Fonzi. - Joel Plaskett ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***
saturday what a day groovin all week with you...
so i kinda slept in a LOT this day. you have no idea how exhausting it is watching all those bands and walking up and down those hills and getting used to the atlantic climate again and blah blah blah... anyway, we wandered over to wormwood's in the middle of the afternoon. the indie record label symposium was s much fun!!! according to local legend, jim was setting up the `daydream/zedd + all our friends' table when the kids at Mint kicked us off. well we need a full table! was the reason given. so poor jim is standing there, we don't have a table, he doesn't know what to do, and then, it happens. julie comes to the rescue. julie had a table for sappy records (yes, julie from broken girl, eric's trip) and she said she didn't need the whole table so she shared with us! even though when i looked at both tables later on, sappy and mint had the same # of records on display. plus she had all that baby gear and ben to look after. she is an angel. :) so when rod and i got there, our table was all set up with copies of the state champs and spine singles, the preppy relatives, emily vey duke, and motes cassettes, plus ffiction zines and fire engine red cds. i threw down some joey joey's and some flyers for our friends at endearing records and a tiny little sloan net sign we made. it was like being at junior high science fair or something. i took an hour to walk around and videotape all the goings on and to talk to kids in bands and who worked for labels. everyone was sooo friendly and sweet, i really had a great time. i think our hot ticket item at the daydream/zedd table was the motes tape. oh quel surprise! :) the new grand played over at the gravitee club so i caught two songs of theirs on video and liked it. too loud, again. small space, big sound, maybe. all the indie rock boys were at that show. very interesting. by that i mean the boys in the bands we all love. you know who. but they didn't come back over to wormwood's to see julie. losers!!! i ran over to wormwood's to find out where the broken girl show was and stumbled into the theatre in time to catch her starting her show. while i ran off again to find my slackass (but oh so cute) :) photographer i got shant to tape her first few songs for me. i'm s glad i got this performance on tape, it was my favorite of the whole weekend. while i raved about thrush hermit and rebecca west those were merely my favorite birdland shows. broken girl was once again my favorite performance of the entire time i was there, same as this summer. she's so captivating and the setting was rather intimate and low key. everyone listened politely and she thanked us again and again for being so patient while she tuned her (borrowed) guitar for about 10 minutes. it was well worth the wait. i don't know the name of the song, but she has this new one that sends shivers up my spine. it kind of goes you did real well, you did real well together, we did well together, but not forever and in the verses, it sounds like a little story about the first time she ever went to see elevator to hell cause it really sounds like she's talking about what it's like to not be on stage with rick and tara is. anyway, it's very sad and beautiful and i really hope that when she sings but not forever she was talking about her and rick's personal relationship, not the whole eric's trip thing, but you never know. h. she also sang dance music from the _nora_ 7'' and that song she always sings with eric's trip that i always screw up the title but she sings i hope you're never there and it's very scary and sad. she was wonderful. the performance ended with a beautiful song about how she wants to be a good mother but she's not really sure that she is. oh, i'm sure it made everyone feel like crying! it was so good. then we went to get some food and buy video tape. it took an HOUR to get two freakin falafels at beirut beirut...i was having the WORST luck getting food to go in that town. we missed the motes!!! ARGH!!! it's probably the last time i had to see them in this incarnation too, since rumor has it they're switching musical stylings when they get back. we got there in time to see hayden. i've heard people talk passionately about how they love and how they hate him. i wasn't impressed, sorry to say. if he'd stop growling i might have enjoyed it a bit more, but it was annoying. maybe it was the wrong environment, a crowded bar. who knows. thumbs down. eric's trip. come on, it's ERIC'S TRIP!!! however, in order to get a chance to videotape this show, i had to sit on the stage and it was weird not just listening/watching, but trying to watch the battery level and focus the camera and stuff. it wasn't enjoyable at all. so after it was over, i was bitching about how i didn't really like the performance. but now that i've watched it at home, i realize it was a good performance and they did some great new songs and some good
part one billion of the pop x
being the lameass losers we were, four of us were sitting at roderick's spacing out and missing bad luck #13. luckily (HAHA!!) we got to birdland for nerdy girl's set only four songs into it. this was the all ages show on friday, by the way. the performance was one of the best. if it wasn't for the fact rebecca west played later that night, i'd say it was the highlight of the day. cecil's on stage performance is somewhat reminiscent of mary margaret o'hara but she isn't quite as spastic, she's just very involved in her music. she's quite diminutive but the energy she expresses could fill a room. nerdy girl as a four piece seems to work. it was nice to see jimcee happy for once. wow, if nerdy girl's music can make grumpy old man cooper :) smile, imagine what they can do for you. i hope you'll all pick up their 10'' and 7'' and keep on supporting this special little group. next up...the Fastbacks. yeeehaw!!! a truly energetic performance from this part cuddlecore part garage rock part mexican jumping bean (kurt bloch) group. i nearly fell over laughing at kurt's hyperactivity. i was watching my videotape of this performance a few days ago and i have no idea how i managed to get him in focus once. good songs, good stage presence, good show. go see them if you get the chance. :) we sauntered over towards the oasis for the no-cases but not before we made a stop at the dairy queen and subway (where i had the misfortune of eating the world's worst sub EVER). while hanging around outside the oasis, rod and i stopped to talk to waye mason. i grilled him on video right then and there. i asked him the tough questions, i pulled no punches. so waye, do you try to use every opportunity possible to use the word `no'? um...not really? very hard hitting stuff. anyway, he explained why everyone had to pay a cover charge even if they were important media folk such as myself. ha ha ha... he flashed his fancy laminated No pass. w! first up, coyote. not as good as their show the night before but still sweaty and oh so fun. the best part of all was when their drummer (um, patrick? tim? i dunno...) knocked over his cymbal and hit his stick so hard on the drum it went flying up and nearly hit him in the head. ooh, tough guy act! normally i hate macho rock (ha ha...) but i had to smile at this. they CAN'T take themselves *that* seriously, can they? anyway, the songs are pretty cool live. next up, cool blue halo. h, i seem to have missed this performance as i was down at the waterfront watching roderick flash ducks (yes, really, ask him about it sometime). you think he's mild mannered and oh so shy but it's really a coy act. anyway. we got back up to the oasis in time to catch the last half of those local losers, the state champs. mmm, good show, chaps! :) they played their newer (new meaning from this summer i guess) songs, which i enjoyed. the best part of all is watching jon dacey. he sort of wanks away in a sort of bored way, it's very comical. he will probably take offense at this, but it's ok. you have to see it to know what i mean. he is going rock star with his hands and guitar but his face is like manthis sucksblahblahblah. nonetheless, he delivers. the first time i ever heard mark mullane sing (way back in february? march??) i thought man, they gotta get a new singer (raleigh sport) cause i just didn't know what that whole style was all about. clueless, thats me. needless to say, it's grown on me, quite a lot. the performance that night was absolutely charming in my opinion. he seems happiest and most at ease when he's up there playing and singing. mike catano needs a haircut. for that matter, jon DIDN'T need one. :) oh, i'm not being fair, i'm judging them by their physical appearances again. oh well. buy their record, buy their tape, go see them play live. we left the oasis to arrive at birdland just in time to meet a bunch of DRUNK morons (wow, how rare, drunk morons at birdland...) at the door shouting what?? twelve bucks? to see rebecca who? what fuck man we're going to the palace thank god. i walked into the bar as they began a haunting slow(er) version of good advice - that set the vibe for the whole show. intense, moody, innovative, passionatei can't tell you all enough how amazing they are live, at least when i've seen them. this performance was absolutely breath taking. they played several new songs, all of which impressed me, in addition to playing tracks from _burners on_ such as 7 days breeze and sick. lukas' bass playing was fucking insane he's a sight to see, man. allison, as always, blew me away with the amount of power she seems to play with. definitely the best part of the day, and depending on my mood, the best birdland show of the whole event (when i temporarily forget the first thrush hermit show...). i guess i must have been really tired or something because i think i left after
Sunday Night, it's almost all over :(
what a surprise, elevator to hell were SOOO LOUD!!! they played an awesome version of clearly see me and why i didn't like august 93 and a few other songs. ron is a madman on the keyboards, no kidding. it has a very different feel than watching eric's trip live, even though it's still rick and mark and a girl (!) and another quiet little boy. whatever. it was really crowded and it was an all ages show so it wasn't feeling so great. it was hot and humid and i think everyone was tired. it's hard to enjoy music when you've already seen four hundred bands and you're all soggy. but elevator to hell were quite good. i'd love to see them in a quieter, less crowded venue sometime. right before the monoxides came on, james and brooker and lorrie, the fire engine red kids, told me they had decided to leave a day early. we think we'll leave tomorrow morning, instead of tuesday, ok?? um, no. needless to say i was a LITTLE upset. i missed the monoxides set cause i went outside for a walk to feel sad because i had gone through all the work of mentally preparing myself to leave on tuesday. it was going to be hard enough to leave as it was but all i felt like doing was leaving birdland and packing my things and crying. not exactly the best of moods. we got back to birdland in time to catch the thrush hermit show which was very good but i felt like i was going to cry any minute. all their songs seemed so much sadder right then and there. they played this new one, oh man, it's a heart breaker... i'm sorry if your heart is full...i'm sorry if your heart is full and it's joel singing it, and just one look at his big puppy dog eyes... *sniff* :( it was a great performance, they looked like they were having fun and they ended with one of my favourite songs, claim to lame so it was awesome. it went on forever, too, they just kept the rockin' up to a maximum level. too bad i felt heartbroken and sad thoughout it all. thrush hermit was the favorite band of fire engine red, though, and somehow they managed to remind those boys of how wonderful halifax really is and so james grabbed me after the show and told me they'd decided to leave on tuesday after all! thank you thank you thank you thrush hermit, i know you are responsible somehow!! :) the hermit kicked my ass!! lorrie could be heard saying all the way home next up, oh my god, it was boston's dambuilders! one of my favorite albums of 1994 was their _encendedor_, so i was very hyped to see them! they played a mix of old and new since they have a brand new cd out. i was very impressed with them, they have a great live sound. i don't think many people knew who they were, even though they kind of had an indie rock hit last year with shrine. oh well. they played idaho and copsucker and smell and shrine from encendedor and then about four or five new songs. i loved them. in case you don't know, they are a four piece with guitar, bass, drums, and violin and eric is amazing on guitar and joan is freakish and wonderful on violin and vocals. they're all great at vocals, actually. i heard a bit of the new album in james covey's car and it struck me as being a bit slick, a bit too slick but i'll give it a second chance later on. great band. nice people, too. and then i ran out of video tape, so katrina drove roderick and i home so i could find an older tape to tape over, since i didn't want to miss the final bar show, the final show of the whole pop x. it was a chance to get some hot chocolate too. warren and kat and rod and i warmed up a bit and then raced back to catch the last event. -- A lot of people think Matt's Kato Kaelin. - Drew Yamada, the Super Friendz ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***
sunday, a day of rest
on sunday, the cinnamon toast brunch was held at birdland. i know everyone was having trouble with venues and all but it was really hard to feel like eating much in the dirty dark old birdland. there was a lot of food, scrambled eggs, blueberry pancakes, bagels, homefries, and of course, lots n' lots of cinnamon toast!! colin and shawn and the kids from cinnamon toast kept busy all morning and afternoon making the food, so hooray for them. :) by the time roderick and i arrived, we had missed broken girl's set. i heard later on that people weren't as quiet or polite and it bothered julie a bit. birdland has a tendency to bring out the moron in most people, i'm finding. i walked around and asked various people what they thought of the food and atmosphere and music. derek from hip club groove said it all... sweaty. mary from impact magazine seemed to think it was odd eating breakfast/brunch in the club that only 10 hours earlier everyone was jumping around and being drunk and crazy. dave from cfny hadn't eaten when i ran into him with the exception of a fry which he seemed to think was good. ok, dave, food critic. marc from len said yeah its fuckin awesome, whatever. he hates me. :) plumtree was playing a rather stripped down set while we ate and it was nice, not too loud at all. however, i'm not the hugest plumtree fan so i can't tell you what songs they played, although rod pointed out when they began their new hit from the 7'' sodium chloride. it sounded like plumtree so if you like that sort of thing, it was good. if not, well, you probably wouldn't have been won over. they sure smile a lot. :) next up, one of the best things ever, it was piggy! people have already described the madness that is piggy, but i couldn't believe it! they are not like anything else in halifax, no sirree. violin, standup bass, a horn section, acoustic guitar, and it was all music of a different time. i really really enjoyed it, they were very talented and entertaining and wonderful. perfect for a rainy (did i mention the HURRICANE that was currently beating the hell out of halifax??? it was umbrella destroying weather, i tell you) sunday afternoon. they have a cassette out called calypso avalanche and i don't know where to buy it if you don't live in halifax, maybe someone could post an address. i stupidly didn't buy a copy when i meant to, i just plain old forgot. argh. they also staged one of the only things resembling a protest against the corporate sponsorship of Export `A'. in case you were in halifax, those little slips of paper protesting it were created by CKCU music director Shawn Scallen - he put his address on some of them so he doesn't care if people know in case anyone is worried. he's no coward. :) but anyway, piggy also staged their protest. they brought a cotton candy machine out into the dance floor and i guess the idea was for it to spray clouds of cotton candy everywhere but it kind of didn't do that but it was funny to watch anyway. esp. when one of the plumtree girls went up and started taking pieces of it back to eat, causing ian mcgettigan to giggle a lot. it's true. they hacked up stuffed animals, defaced the export a sign, and smoked on stage. they had an export a mascot come out and hand out anti smoking literature and stickers. it must have taken a lot of work to do that. i'm not sure what sort of impact it left on people but at least they said something. it's too bad that the pop x is broke and i know cigarette and alcohol companies always sponsor the arts and sporting events, but that doesn't mean we have to sit there and smile politely at them. :) so fuck ya, export a! woo hoo! they also ended their set with a song called murder at the pop explosion and it was all about export a, but really, considering the name of one of the labels in halifax and all, it was kind of funny for other reasons, too. :) it almost sounded like a new jingle or something if you only heard the chorus! murder murder, i cry MURDER murder at the pop explosion! we ran through the rain just in time to catch al tuck's set at wormwood's. al tuck and his new band. i asked him on monday who the new players were, but all i can remember is the drummer is from uisce beatha and um... well they were quite good. he's moving into a more jazz influenced sound it would seem, not so much the country-blues thing. i guess lil orton has ruined country music forever... :) he played my favourite track from _arhoolie_, good and ready and one of my favourites from _brave last days_ i can't pretend and they were so nice. you couldn't have asked for nicer music on a rainy sunday afternoon. i'm sorry i missed moonsocket and snailhouse before, but seeing piggy was worth it. i also missed radioblaster (sorry derek) and leonard conan, curb, and smoother over at the gravitee club cause i had to sit at our table at the symposium. oh and do a little shopping, too. i only had 25
friDAY at the pop explosion...
..bored yet? then STOP reading these, chump! :) anyway, for those of you who care, i could barely stand up friday AFTERNOON when i woke up, thanks to halifax being a bunch of stupid hills (just ask warren and d'arcy how much they enjoyed it). much as i hate the prairies, i love the flatness of this land. i finally got some video tape and ran past citadel hill just in time to notice i was probably missing orange glass. AUGH!! i got there in time to catch about five songs, including one in which rick white screamed. SCREAMED, i tell you. they were loud, too loud for what they were trying to do, in my opinion. i very muchly enjoyed the songs, but the noise level was too much. i was happy that they played paranoid, from the wait a day 7''. TOO LOUD!!! of course, rick white did the sound so it was insanely loud. we should have known... my first video blunder...i pressed record TWICE when rick went up to sing, so of course all i got was my stupid hand putting the lens cap back on AFTER he left the stage. Duh. by the way, i had missed hedge, madhat ( who struck me as a thrush hermity kind of band this summer, or kind of like wagbeard from calgary, actually...pop, in the power pop vein), and cleveland steamer who i didn't feel bad missing since their performance this summer annoyed me. i know someone (jon) will kill me but i left before space needle played that afternoon so i could eat and go see Len at R.O.W. i left with dream and adina from new york, hoping to meet up with katrina warren d'arcy and d'arcy's friend who i forgot her name oh man i'm so stupid. BUT thanks to dream and adina's when harry met sally restaurant ordering style :) :) (does the fajitas have onions? can i get this dressing on the side? do you haveetc etc etc) :) :) we took forever to eat and i missed len. i walked to r.o.w. in time to see them loading their gear and swearing. rats. so we walked to roderick's house to rest a bit and get ready for the evening's festivities. :) coming soon, part one billion of my boring adventures in halifax... -- A lot of people think Matt's Kato Kaelin. - Drew Yamada, the Super Friendz ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***
birdland thursday pop explosion
i missed the first few acts due to the sloannet event. i can't remember if i was there for made or not. isn't that silly of me? coyote, however, i remember, as they kicked my ass all over the floor. they were off to an ok start but then something happened and they just fuckin ROCKED. i've never quite understood the whole fascination with bubaiskull or coyote, their recordings just didn't appeal to me. i had only seen coyote once before, at an instore this summer. oh my god. they were loud, gothic, sweaty, dirty (in all senses of the word), and just deadon for the rest of the gig. i still don't think their cd captures them at all. if they were smarter or wanted to work harder ;) they'd gig all the time and tour and get a video out. there are people who still dig what they're doing but they'll probably never hear about them unless they live in halifax. tsk tsk... after coyote, james and i went back to jim's to pick up homework geekboy and some other guy who i later realized was kevin from derivative. geez, he was a nice guy! super friendly and all smiles. we made it back in time to watch THRUSH HERMIT who of course killed. they were s wicked. i stupidly wasn't videotaping that night so i can't tell you what songs they did but they were having so much fun, everyone else was having so much fun. probably one of the best bar performances of the whole event, hands down. those guys are superstars, you know. last part of the night Maker's Mark. i had read all the raving reviews from toronto journalists and expected big things. what the hell is wrong with people from toronto? (just teasing dave and i know you're from ottawa...) they were NOT worth the hype. biggest disapointment of the whole thing. i can't believe people rave about them, they're just a rock band, nothing special. i dont' think that just because i like andrew's old band and mike's bands (well i only know cheticamp not the jellyfish babies, and he does well in jale) doesn't mean i should like maker's mark and maybe i'm wrong but i get the feeling a lot of people feel they're supposed to like this band. another example in my mind of a band that deserved a slot at the pop explosion but NOT a HEADLINING slot. i don't think i would have been so harsh in my judgement (boring) had they played an afternoon or early evening slot where i wasn't expecting to be blown away or at the very least IMPRESSED. complain complain that's all i ever do -- A lot of people think Matt's Kato Kaelin. - Drew Yamada, the Super Friendz ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***
thursday night at the pop explosion
SADLY (i mean this) i missed the hip hop showcase which was taking place at the same time as the sloan net event at jimcee's. i felt really bad, since i had promised cory i would come and watch his band play. i also was curious to see six too especially, since cory and brian had mentioned him a lot the last time i'd seen them. but such is the pop explosion, too many things to do... the sloan net party was the most fun!! james (you know him as the white boy wannabe) came to pick roderick, me, and the best ginger cookies ever (just ask dream) up around 7 or so, just in time to watch LoveHer, which is Mike Catano on drums (a drum, to be more accurate), Yan Raymond on acoustic and Mark Mullane on electric. It was really special, I am still kicking myself for not buying video tapes earlier in the day. At one point, Yan I think started to play amped which the State champs + Yan were recording earlier this year for the sloan tape (I've never heard it though). It was kind of funny, it seemed like half the people were like yeah, cool but the other half were like this is lame. Lame won, so no song. I went downstairs for a major gossip session with Heather and Jon and we were joined by people but for the most part it was the three of us being kind of silly. it was actually kind of fun. :) So needless to say, I missed the other musical performances, except for Cecil. WOW! She is an amazing performer, whether it's with a band or with one other person, or just by herself. She played some soft pop music that seemed to soothe and please everyone. And then Chris Yorke, honorary sloan net party crasher guy (earlier this summer, he joined our frisbee fest and stuff...) stood up and told everyone thanks for letting me be here, it was *safe* or some such beautiful yet confusing statement. he's a character all right. we love you, chris. at least i do. the food was very fantastic and then we had a bit of a dance/air guitar party while people left (james, fire engine red drummer james, foolishly went for some air, not knowing the true nature of the 'hood in the north end of halifax...poor sucker). poor roderick was (stupidly) :) trying to do some homework while james covey and friends listened to the new superchunk album and showed off dance moves. jimcee wins for his peanuts gang dance. then we left for birdland for the bar show tara -- A lot of people think Matt's Kato Kaelin. - Drew Yamada, the Super Friendz ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***
some pop explosion stuff
if you're totally sick to death of hearing about it, press delete now, baby. however, i finally got through the four metric tonnes of email i had while i was away and it seems there were only a few reviews. i thought i'd write a bit about some of the things that stuck in my mind. i think i'll do this in a few small installments so my brain doesn't turn inside out. the first show i got to see was the bar show at birdland on wednesday. the fire engine red van pulled into halifax around 2 am. thank god everything goes really late in halifax or we'd have missed lil orton hoggett. despite feeling completely sad about missing sloan/trike/state champs and the chinstraps earlier on, i was very excited about seeing lil orton, one of two acts i wanted to see this summer but didn't get to. (sloan, of course, being the other). did i mention i was excited to see my halifax friends too? :) by now everyone knows lil orton is matthew murphy, and the ten cent wings are charles austin on guitar (he's a WICKED guitar player, even al tuck says he's jealous of him), tracy stevens on bass, and chris murphy on drums with a bad german accent. lots of swearing in this show. what a bunch of foul mouthed hicks. i nearly split a gut laughing at charles' hokey accent while he talked about only smokin export a's when they pay the bills or some such silliness. they played a lot of old time country classics. while this was a great show and was much fun, i have to agree with the people who were wondering why a side project (essentially a joke side project) was headlining at atlantic canada's only alternative music festival. no offense meant to them, it was an event and a half, but it must have felt weird to some other legit bands who couldn't even get on the roster (bands i got to speak with on the way home), but are successful enough to be touring europe and the states. but anyway. the next morning, i could barely get out of bed, i was so exhuasted. that's what happens when you wake up at 7 am in Hamilton, Ontario on Tuesday and hang out in Toronto all day, sell merchandise and schmooze :) until 2 am, load gear into the van, and drive like hell towards Halifax for 21 hours and then stay up visiting all night. But Fire Engine Red, my hometown boys, were up first at the all ages show at the gravitee club. a more insulting slot they could not have asked for. considering they were the only band from the prairies and considering how far they had travelled, it was a little disheartening to have them opening for bands who had to cross the bridge (New Brunswick) or walk down the street (Preppy Relatives) at a time slot when most all ages type kids are um in school. again, no offense to those bands at all, i enjoyed their sets immensely, it just seems like f.e.r. were pushed aside and not taken as seriously as they might have been. peter rowan did apologize to them, though, which was cool. it was nice to see colin m. in the crowd during their set. anyway, their set was actually decent considering how little sleep they'd had, although it had nothing on their toronto performance. they are a meat and potatoes rock band, kids, wearing their influences on their sleeves quite proudly (the replacements, uncle tupelo, buffalo tom). they're in debt big time. new brunwick were a good straight ahead band, but nothing stood out from their set. of course, i was busy meeting some sloan net kids for the first time and hangin with old friends, too, so i guess i'm not in a position to judge. strawberry were just like they were this summer. if you know their single, you know their set. nice quiet pop, but nothing really really special. preppy relatives. i had missed their performance at the geek love fest thing this summer. what a mistake. they were sooo warm sounding, that's the best way i can sum them up. simple but innovative. pick up their tape, go see them. people talk about them a lot here, so i'll just stop. i left after that set, i HAD to get ready for the sloan net get together... tara -- A lot of people think Matt's Kato Kaelin. - Drew Yamada, the Super Friendz ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***
Re: mucheast
this is really long but i haven't posted anything in ages and this has been in my head for a few months so come on, at least glance over what i have to say cause i think this list needs some serious discussion once in a while. last night's MuchEast got me thinking about a lot of things. people have already talked about Mike Campbell and the whole problem with how he's covering events out there. it makes me sad that he has such poor judgement and the bands and people who are working hard at putting out music mainly because they love it aren't getting any sort of recognition. mucheast is turning into an even sadder joke than it started out as. talk about missing a scoop. what a moron. on saturday and sunday afternoons, he could have interviewed people from what i consider to be some of the most important record labels in canada ie/ derivative, bubblegun, sonic unyon, sappy, mint but no. he could have gone to some of the all ages shows and picked up on some of the lesser known but just as cool (or cooler but anyway) bands...but no. i didn't see him at the no-cases on friday night. in fact, i only saw him at the BAR shows. anyway, if that's all the coverage the halifax pop explosion is getting from muchmusic, i'm very sad. last year's coverage was really interesting i thought. they even went up to the cinnamon toast brunch, which was great this year and in addition to the food and music, there was the only form of protest for the sponsorship of export a. hooray for piggy. something else really got to me last night, and that was during len's interview. i know that marc really likes to put down the whole incestuousness of the halifax scene but i'm beginning to think he's going about it the wrong way. feel free to criticize me if you think i'm wrong but here's what i think(and i still like len...) there's already a halifax/east coast scene backlash going on in the rest of canada. i'm not sure if people outside of that area are aware of it or not, they probably are. it's stupid in my mind because all bands and people in the music industry do is bitch about how toronto oriented this business is, and then when a small isolated city finally gets noticed for what it's been doing on its own all these years, people in toronto get bitchy which is to be expected but then people in vancouver get bitchy and then people in other cities get bitchy and you end up with people summing up halifax as this sugarpopincestuouscuteness thing and dismissing it completely. fuck man, all that is going to do is HURT canadian music in general. i doubt anyone will take my opinion seriously since i'm obviously such a devoted sloan groupie or some such stupid thing, but i just think it's going to hurt everyone in the long run if all we do is knock down people who (as far as i can see) have done business in an ethical, helpful, and productive manner ie. cinnamon toast and murder. sure murder usually has murder bands on tour together, but don't you want to help out your friends? come on, a lot of those people went to high school together, of course they're going to want to work together. blah blah blah. i do know from being in halifax for a few months that a lot of really good bands and artists are being ignored because they are in the shadow of the success of murder and cinnamon toast but geez, quit blaming them and try to do your own thing. i have to say, waye mason gets dumped on a lot and while i don't claim to know him as well as some of you might, he strikes me as a good, hardworking guy who doesn't get very much recognition and he doesn't always work with the cool bands but there he is, putting on the no-cases, telling the big industry schmoozes that sorry, they do have to pay four bucks to see some of the lesser known bands. in my books, that makes him amazing. i also think that colin mackenzie (the only one from cinnamon toast that i sort of know) is amazing and he does little things to help people out and people probably don't even realize it. i guess my point is kind of this...i think the reason why there's such a backlash against halifax and murder and cinnamon toast is partly because of lazyass journalist types who just want to talk about cinnamon toast/murder bands (if anyone ever accuses me of that, hey, fuck you!! i play and write about bands like preppy relatives, steaming toolie, christopher robin, and WAY before this whole daydream nightmare began, the state champs/raleigh sport...) and then the other bands/artists get left behind. instead of talking shit like marc (flame away, kids!!) why not keep on doing your own thing and be proud of what you've done instead of trying to knock down murder/cinnamon toast who at one point were just smalltime, too? it's not going to help ANYONE if you keep trying to keep this myth alive, this myth that it's murder/cinnamon toast vs. everyone when in fact there is no real schism, at least in my naive eyes. and in

State Champs on a dying medium
yeah, cassettes! i just got a tape with the latest State Champs hits on it, and if you were ever into them before you'll probably adore this latest collection. they are sharpening up their *pretty* guitar skills and they're sure to make you happy to know them. southern hadley accents brings a tear to my eye, but it will rock you, too. i think that's the thing i'm beginning to like most about them, is that they'll rock you but you'll feel sad and mushy sometimes without knowing why. it's why broadcasting features is still my favourite on the 7'', it's all sad and rockin in a slow kind of way. something for everyone. hahahaa! the guitar sounds are more archers of loaf than anything they've written before, and i don't mean that in the joking they sound JUST like archers of loaf way, i mean...ok the best example that comes to mind is one of my favourite aol guitar moments is the part when they're singing and there's a chance that things will get weird/yeah that's a possibility in the BIG hit which i'm sure you all know harnessed in slums, the guitar bit is s wicked and that's what i mean, it's like that. you can see this most obviously in the song Cost for allowance. the stately elms, the song formerly known as fuck the jesus lizard is still my favourite, the way it rocks in a subtle way. the guitar sound reminds me of a lazy superchunk almost but i really don't know very much about rock music so i'll shut up now. the tape is worth getting just to hear jon sing all high pitched all right in a rather hilarious fashion. it's like when i heard mike pick singing all high and stuff, it takes a while to get used to it, but oddly enough, it seems to fit. since james and jim taped this stuff for me, i'm not exactly sure how to go about getting your own collection, perhaps email wayne at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or ask listmanagerboy [EMAIL PROTECTED] but.ORDER NOW! and don't forget to buy your copy of the _nevada downs_ 7'' from daydream, help keep the dream alive blah blah blah... tara stupid girl -- A lot of people think Matt's Kato Kaelin. - Drew Yamada, the Super Friendz ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***

campfire songs
a CD ep you all should pick up... Trike's new self-titled CD, on their own label campfire. six songs in the pop/power pop/sweet pop/boy-girl pop vein. you know? produced and mixed by mario bradet and patrick pentland this may. trike - Melanie Rusinak, voice guitar Todd Calder, voice guitar Gerard Watters, drums Scott Tappen, bass they've all been in a tonne of bands you all should know like the Quahogs, Chaz Rules, Cool Blue Halo, Tag (now jale), and many bad hardcore bands. tracks one, four, and six (rocket, gun, and girlwater) are sung by melanie. i guess this is lame to say but if you like the way the women in jale sing, you'll probably like mel's voice on cd. live, i wasn't sure what the fuss was about, but on cd, it's amazing. really beautiful. track one sounds like a mix between something sugar would play and according to roderick time after time by cyndi lauper. this is a good thing. her voice actually reminds me of julie claytor from eric's trip a lot, like on songs like my chest is empty and evie. i'm such a sucker for ya-ya's and hs and she does some great ooohs in gun. track two (pipe) three (scrabble) and five (bozo) are todd singing lead with mel backing him up. it's all catchy sometimes crunchy guitar noisy pop. i'm not sure who to compare todd to, it's kind of a soft guy voice, not whispery soft like rick white, but not harsh or loud in any way. i think the best way to find out how to get this EP (it's really worth it) is to write: Trike p.o. box 262 Dartmouth, Nova Scotia B2Y 3Y3 or email [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] i think this is the first thing outside of sloan patrick has been involved with, like as far as producing and stuff. so buy it even for the sloan connection ;) even though it's awesome just on its own merits. i got my copy yesterday afternoon and i think i've listened to it 20 times. i'm not kidding. tara -- As big as Sloan, but not as big as Michael Jackson. - Bill Priddle, treble charger ***CJSW 90.9 fm -- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm***

taken from Stylus Magazine out of Winnipeg Manitoba... State Champs Nevada Downs 7'' Daydream Records These Halifax boys wear their indie rock influences on their sleeves - and i bet you the sleeves belong to slightly shrunken T-shirts with ribbing around the neck and arms and perhaps a glittery Star Wars iron on adorning the front. Again...Re: That band-list thingy again in case anybody cares.
I nearly forgot. I don't think Todd is on Sloan Net anymore but he was for a while. His band is Trike, the first band I saw live in Halifax. Yay! Anyway, they rock, get their new CD, it's on Campfire records, I think. Duh, if you don't know, Trike is made up of kids from the Quahogs (hooray!! the prettiest record cinnamon toast ever put out, next to les gluetones), Chaz Rules, and Tag (you know, jale's old name). the pursuit of sappyness
hey today i was sitting at the stupid mac at cjsw and reading alt.music.canada and reading this post on the pursuit of happiness and i looked up from my computer and there was moe berg. weird. anyway, i showed him where the on air booth was so he could have his interview. later on, after all the cjsw kids had left, i was putting notices up on the bulletin board. i felt like someone was behind me, and i jumped cause it was moe berg again and he scared me. he said he was really sorry and asked if i could help him find his jacket. so i did. we searched in the studio for it. after he found it i was letting him out of the station and suddenly i decided to ask him the question i ask every band i meet. so, what do you think of sloan? moe: um, i like them? me: really?? moe: yeah. is that ok? am i not supposed to like them? me: no, no, that's great. they're fun, they're one of my favorite bands. moe: yeah, they're one of my favorite bands, i have all three of their cds. i've never seen them live, but i got to meet them once! me: yeah, they're nice, huh? moe: totally nice. it's really sad that they're breaking up. i'm really sad about that. he was so shy yet excited at the same time. it was cute. wasting more bandwidth in an hour than brian does in a week, tara Mmm bandwidth! -- CJSW 90.9 fm, the best thing about this stupid city. check us out... http://www.ucalgary.ca/~cjswfm 10 years of punk...and oh so much more

in a word, SUPER
hey kids quel surprise, it's about the super friendz who came back to calgary last night, but played the *good* night club, the Night Gallery. this day was off to a relatively bad start as my car was rearended and jane and i foolishly watched beyond rangoon before we went to the gig. by the way, if everyone on this list doesn't go see that movie, you all suck and are useless. i'm not kidding. it's very important, go see it. it just isn't a good film to see before a gig, we were crying too much. but anyway we got to the night gallery around 930 pm and the first person we saw was charles austin sitting down with my friend and yours, lisa. seems the friendz had no place to sleep so they decided to trick lisa into letting them stay at her house. after saying hello to charles, jane and i went to the car again to get out the big box of chocolate chip cookies we nerds made with our good friends eric and jason for the super friendz. you know, a thank you present of sorts. they seemed pretty damn excited about them, drew kept saying that's so kind and well chris he scarfed down about 10 in one minute. 2 Phat Cookies. anyhoo...while mayday (noise noise noise) played i was showing chris photos from this summer...he called tara da costa shrimp and laughed at the picture of mike catano playing nintendo. in a nice way, of course. i had to give him some kleenex for his ears because of the noise which was stupid and loud for no reason at all. and he gave me a stick of gum, cinnamon my favorite! the gum addict strikes gold. drew and matt were playing pool behind us and after matt sunk the last ball, drew and i were talking about some of their newer songs, like the titles and stuff. charles had gone off to meet with his father who had come down from edmonton to see the band. then straight played, who people seemed to like a bit more. here is the set list for the super friendz: restricted better call when they paid me optimist :) :) down in flames :) karate man absurd bass lime television come clean green hand up and running rescue us from boredom --- matt and drew both said there will be a video for this in september. last song of the night was 10lbs and while they were playing it, i finally figured out what the dumb title meant. duh. what a good song. :) okay, now i've seen them five times and even though the cd release party was really fun and their oasis show was long and crazy and warm and cozy, i have to see this was their best performance. the music was REALLY tight, there were no equipment fuckups as usual and it just seemed to gel together finally. matt screwed up on the vocals for one of charles' songs i think but nothing serious, he just smiled and stopped singing. the best thing was even though the music was really tight, the band was really letting loose. usually matt goes nutso and stuff, but this time charles was groovin and drew, wow. drew was a dancin dancin dancin machine, watch him get down!!! i'm really sorry none of us got this performance on videotape, it was truly entertaining. it was a pretty full house, too, which was nice, plus everyone seems to clap and stuff. i had to be a big loser after and get my 7'' signed. i was sort of embarrassed because well after you write record reviews and interviews and stuff with a band about four or five times, it seems really stupid to go back to being hi may i have your autograph? but they were all really nice about it and wrote clever and witty things. later on when we went next door to eat, chris was telling stories about how he went to DC when he was younger and went to ian mackayes's house and wanted records signed and stuff. he totally gave me this look, totally mocking me for asking them for autographs earlier. beet red embarrassed, that was me. well i won't go any further, it was very nice to sit down with them all and talk for a bit longer. oh yeah, matt said shit and charles said shitty on cjsw during their interview yesterday. way to go, ckdu alumni!! :) anyway, go see them, buy their stuff, give them good wholesome food, bla bla bla. thanks colin for sending them this way again. :) super happy (ha ha...) tara :) :) :) :) :) -- i feel sick and you're a thousand miles away and i feel terribly ill... Hey Al Tuck is supposed to be touring this fair land of ours in the fall and it's high time we had some discussion on the man, the myth, the legend himself. the cure for what ails me
the super friendz, the inbreds, and jale all played in calgary tonight at the republik nightclub. it was the fourth time in calgary for the inbreds, but the first time for both super friendz and jale. however, it was *my* first time seeing the inbreds. super friendz were up first. i was going to take a setlist but i sort of forgot so i'll have to try to remember what they played. one song they played which surprised me was 'optimist', from _sticktoitiveness_ - what a great sad song. drew really is a gifted songwriter. they played Karate Man, which they referred to as fuckup man, when they paid me, down in flames (oooh, break my heart...), 10lbs (hey they have a video for it now), kiss the land (our ballad), rescue us from boredom (they will have a video for this around september), fireflies (oh, it was s pretty, it would have made all of you friendz haters cry!!). they also played green hand, the one that goes ya ya all through the chorus. drew says he isn't sure that song works, but i think it does. it's so stupid and funny. um, they also played Up and Running, that one where they go whyyy stop it now - *sigh* . i wish they recorded that one. they also played a few more that i don't know the names of. sound quality was pretty good from where i was standing but apparently they thought they weren't that good, or at least they seemed really concerned. one of my friends told me he really didn't like them very much because of that guitar players one note solos, and all the OOHs. ha ha, what the hell does he know anyway? actually, i was rather concerned for them, i wasn't sure they'd do very well in calgary. we're a rather fickle crowd and we tend to like our pop with lots of rawk, not rock. if you catch my drift. i think the super friendz go right over a lot of heads here. not that people were rude, but we just dont' hear many bands like them here. they're kind of special, i suppose. :) matt did his usual mental dance near the end of the set. he didn't try to kick chris and he only jumped off the drum kit twice. i think the best song of the set would have to be a tie against down in flames and up and running. many people were disappointed they didn't do Come Clean, it's the single that stayed at number 1, 2, or 3 at cjsw for like 3 months. also, i was sad they didn't play Stone Alone or Better Call, my two favorites from the album, nor did they do Boots, my old favorite. but that's ok, they played a longer set than i thought they might. although charles and drew were perfect gentlemen and have my utmost respect, matt decided to stand right in front of me in the middle of jale's set...there's just no excuse for that. he can see them any old time. well, i guess it wasn't that rude, but still. :) the inbreds were next. i was talking to charles about how we thought the mock up scale down release party/boat cruise was a very special time when he said oh you have to watch them, they are my favorite band. i'd heard the cds and liked them but they didn't blow me away. however, i keep hearing how wicked they are live. well... do you know what it is like to hear a song and feel like crying and yet you're so happy because the song is so pretty but the words or the way the music sounds are so sad and all your troubles get magnified but you feel numb to everything? yeah. like that. in other words, the inbreds are quite possibly canada's most special band live. i have not been moved so much by a band's live performance since...the only thing that truly comes close is the time i saw broken girl at birdland. it's something very special and magical and unique. i don't know the names of their songs, but i wish i did, because they were all amazing. i know people rave about them all the time, but honestly, i was least interested in seeing them but they affected me the most. please go see them, they will remind you why music is so simple yet powerful. i hope they come back really soon. many people here agree. jale was up last, of course. here's the set list, ok? * double edge * all ready * jesus loves me * band sucks * leave it alone * storm * long way home * back on track * nine years * coincidence (the cheticamp song) * ali (this song is so amazing) * blue streak * nebulous * promise * superstar (which blew everyone away) they did a short two song encore. one of the songs was that really upbeat country-ish song jenny sings which i dont' remember the name of, and the other was (*sigh*) frightened of, the leonard conan song. it was so pretty. they all seemed a bit tired, although laura was smiling in her funny little way throughout the show. mike has ron wood hair according to matt murphy. the songs were performed nearly flawless - if one more person mentions jale and learning to play instruments in the same paragraph, i'm going to punch them. they are just fine. well, they impressed enough people to buy their albums etc. anyway. after
the new grand and radio blaster shows
hey, anyone who goes to lee's palace on wednesday, please post a review or email me news on the show. yeah, neither band is an east coast sensation, but come on, they're pretty darn close to thrush hermit... has anyone seen the new murderecords mailout flyer thing? it's great, very very funny, very up-to-date (it has stuff from the july 30 sloan show thing). the letter to the editor re: the super friendz haters is pure madness. :) who would have thought murder could mean so much happiness? tara -- ...but i know some morning without any warning you'll be gone...
boring record reviews
hi... well james our beloved listmanager and i were talking the other day and there seems to be a lack of record reviews on sloan net lately... well even though these are old, maybe there's a few of you who still don't have these albums and might wonder what some kid thinks of them. jes' my dumb opinion...printed originally in vox magazine, we don't want to break any sort of copyright regulations... tara, struggling writer (my jacket zipper is stuck and i can't get out...) Hardship Post *this was a review i did from the promo cd, before the Somebody Spoke Sub Pop You know how once in a while you run into a friend you haven't seen for a long time and suddenly you develop an urge to show them how much you have changed? You want to show them all the new things you've learned, how different you are from the person they thought they knew. _Somebody Spoke_, the first full-length release from Maritimes-based Hardship Post comes across as an example of this type of urge. Their Sub Pop debut (what is it with that label and Canada's east coast scene?) isn't quite what one might expect from the Hardship Post we've come to know and love. The album opener is appropriately enough titled New Wave. It's about half a beat slower than the sort of song they might be expected to offer right away. The guitar sound on this track piqued my curiousity since it wasn't a Hardship Post sound, yet it was still really familiar. This could have been a stellar track were it not for the high pitched backing vocals which are somewhat of a detraction. Let's all ride the new wave, coaxes vocalist Sebastian Lippa. Indeed, let's ride it. (*note - i take it back, i actually *like* mike's backing vox now...) Garbage Truck takes a good minute and a half to really kick in. When it does, wow. Snap, crackle, POP! Unfortunately, as is the case with all of the tracks, it's very short. The entire album clocks in at just thirty-one minutes for 11 songs. The contrast between the soft quiet parts and the full-on rock out sections in What a Day (the first one) is what makes it a fabulous song. It's an ideal song for Hardship Post to play live when it looks like those crazy kids need to breathe every few minutes or so. It's at this point in the album that I always start thinking ok, so the guitar sounds different, but at least I can rely on Sebastian's vocals to remind me of that old sound. Wrong. Track four, Capabilities, is sung by the bassist (*note - at the time) Mike Pick. It sort of trudges along and it's the only song I'm glad is so short. Thankfully, the other song by Pick, My Secret Life is a lot better. It has that late seventies AM radio feel to it. Give it a few listens, it should grow on you. It's as though Lippa, Pick, and drummer Matt Clarke (*note - yeah) are saying Hey, we're not who you thought you could peg us to be so early on in the game. At the same time, they don't appear confident enough to show everyone the new Hardship Post for more than a few moments at a time. By track five, Watchin' You, listeners should be able to determine why the new Hardship Post guitar sound is familiar. It's got that undefinable yet unmistakable Canadian guitar style; go listen to any Tragically Hip or some old Pursuit of Happiness and you'll know what I mean. (* seb and mike were mildly horrified when i told them that) There are three sweet and slow songs on _Somebody Spoke_. The first one to show up, Your Sunshine, is beautiful and vaguely reminds me of All of the Law, an old Psychedelic Furs song. Bizarre. Just for a little and If I... are also quite sweet and feature strong vocal performances by Lippa. It shouldn't be too hard to distinguish between the two versions of What A Day as the second one *rocks* with a capital r. It's in the vein of Silver Suit (without the nod to devo) or Colourblind. I only wish it was longer, it always leaves me breathless and wanting more. Slick Talkin' Jack has already been released as a seven-inch and is merely an OK song by Hardship Post standards. (*note- was i drunk? it's wicked) While I'm still using a negative tone, I'll mention how disappointing it was to not find Rooftops on their new album. It's probably their finest unreleased song. One can always hope for B-sides. A lot of people have been hoping that this will be the album to put Hardship Post into the big leagues. I'm not so sure that's going to happen. The combined results of an album with a rather different sound and the bands' refusal to play old material live will mean one of two things. Either they'll end up alienating their still-growing fanbase, or they'll have the satisfaction of knowing that they made it on their own terms. Despite the criticisms, I do recommend this album wholeheartedly to any of their fans and to those who like pop spilled all over their rock. _Somebody Spoke_ aims to please, especially if you are no longer under the influence of Hack or Moodring.
alyson --- hardship post, plus new jale video
laura and eve of jale said that according to seb and mike, alyson is in hardship post. however, they were unsure as to whether or not this was a permanent situation. the new video for double edge is apparently a film noir with a super hero kinda thing, according to video director laura stein.
Re: Pop 'Splosion III - whassup?
hi not like i'm a mover and shaker but i would say eve and laura from jale are. so they were saying they think the grifters have been invited. mike seemed to think it would happen round october 13 or so...all of them say it's a *probable* but not for sure thing. -- ...but i know some morning without any warning you'll be gone...

dumb stupid part one
um just in case anyone was wondering, there's a reason why everyone hates the french. but anyway... when i wasn't trying to patch things up between di and chuck (god, those two are so impossible), i saw a lot of interesting things in england. unfortunately, sloan wasn't one of them. oh well what can you do. i did however see sir hans sloane. well, a reasonable facsimile thereof. a stone statue of mr. sloane was at the british museum. seems the museum was based on his collection of nick nacky kinda things. someone decided to name a square after him, sloane square. and a tube station, too. and a street. as lisa already mentioned, the hardship post are much adored in NME. sort of. they keep mentioning weezer and buddy holly a lot. seb's glasses are so handy for lazy journalists. east coast rock. well i went to tower records in picadilly circus (circus means traffic circle thingy) and sloan's 2r was on sale there for a mere 17 pounds. about 40 bucks or so on CD. woo. they were in the rock/pop section. jale's Dreamcake was in the alt. rock section for 12 pounds, and there was a space for eric's trip, but nothing there. yay, i saw the new huevos rancheros cd there, too. go eggs! i saw a guy who looked like patrick pentland. but it wasn't. yep. also one night, i was walking around picadilly circus again after seeing wax mannequins of bon jovi and boy george (yeah, that was LOTS of fun, thanks for the advice, lisa you tourist groupy loser ;) ) and this man, age oh let's say 38, comes running up to me and shrieks ERICS TRIP and i'm like Um yes? and i remembered i was wearing my erics trip tshirt.meanwhile my mom is sure this man is going to kill us. he goes ERICS TRIP THEY'RE A BRILLIANT BAND and i go yes. yes they are in that voice the guy on the beer commericial who says yes. yes I am uses. ha ha. pretty freaking funny. or something. i did some other things too. but that's just uncalled for. tara lee ps/ cory bowles' mom dresses him funny. ps+/ i want partial credit for those dumb stupid valentines at the khyber show. so there. :P if mohammed won't come to the mountain i'll be stuck in france in a heatwave. or something like that. it's almost hysterical it's almost hilarious but it's not hysterical
are you stupid? you too can work at muchmusic
Halifax favourites Super Friendz knew what to do when they needed a drummer for a recent CD release party. They enlisted the guitar player's brother. Now he knows how to play because in fact he's Sloan's frontman, Chris Murphy... - Lance Chilton on _fax_ on muchmusic ha ha ha ha!!! what a great segue. just try to count the errors in that one. murderecords should hold a contest, guess how many times chris and what's his name you know the other murphy boy have been referred to as brothers. tara ps/ anyone wanting to talk about those state champs singles, please email james at [EMAIL PROTECTED] because i won't be here for the next two weeks. thanks. it's almost hysterical it's almost hilarious but it's not hysterical

cory and brian, live from the republik
hey kids, some people here on sloan net were cool enough to send me some questions to ask hip club groove so i thought i would write a few of their answers out. i was really surprised by them, i was totally afraid to talk to them cause i don't listen to hip hop and i always get the feeling that bands will hate my guts especially if i don't listen to their music much. oh well. they were sooo nice and sassy and they lie real good. i was feeling a little blue today and they totally made me day. i hope they have a good show tonight. oh yeah, and i have a few messages/comments for some sloan net kids too from them. tara da costa - cory says i love you and brian chimed in i love you too tara. let's have kids! catano - cory you know mike catano? he's wicked, eh? i totally love him. brian his mom is awesome, i like her. mike rules. marc b. - cory the computer guy? :) anyway, here we go. Would you ever play in newfoundland? - Cory oh yeah, newfoundland would rock. the people are cool there. Lee Aaron packs arenas there. People take you in and feed you, same for cape breton. Is that marc and sharon from len in your new video? yes Are you happy with the new video? - they started talking about how it was sent to muchmusic without their knowledge or seal of approval and they're not 100 per cent happy with it, and that obviously the guy directing it had never seen sabotage by the beastie boys or he wouldn't have put certain things in it...(hmmm, what *could* that mean?) and none of the effects were used. but it doens't matter anyway, cause muchmusic isn't playing it anymore because of the hicks smokin and tokin in it (cory) Who did the screaming in Jizz? brian just us and rich and jay o smooth, the hemp smokin dirtbag Cory he's the only cool dartmouth guy and he's not even from dartmouth, he's from fairview Is truro the worst town to come from or is that just a rumor started by kids who live in dartmouth? cory it's a rumor started by dartmouth kids. dartmouth is the worst place. all the black guys there are racist and beat up white guys. brian don't take the last bus, that's all i'm saying cory that place is a dump. we never go to dartmouth at all, i went in once to pick up my super nintendo. ha ha ha! :) If there was a hip hop show in truro and hip club groove played, would anyone show up? yeah, we'd pack the house. that was cory, and he went on to talk about how when they started it was all young kids who liked them and the older kids thought they were dumb and immature but now those kids are growing up and they go to shows in halifax and stuff and say stuff like we always knew you'd do good ie/ with videos and an album out. Why are there no indie hip hop labels in halifax? cory there is, Jorun. anyway, hip club groove will be putting out a split 7'' on Fun Trip records (len's label) in the fall with Gordski, the guy who was with them on the big truck compilation. they're planning on doing a compilation cassette with gordski and six too and stinkin rich, then a full length with murder after christmas. they said lots more and told some very interesting stories about how derek's dad is a rich scientist who conducted experiments on their brains to make them think they were playing rock music when really they played hip hop. oh yeah one more thing, i got to meet another sloan net kid today, len's drummer is of course drew lidkea and i recognized him from the pictures in ffiction. cory and me talked about sloan net a lot, and then he asked me my name again and he goes tara? tara lee? the one who always fights with mike catano on sloan net? and then he laughed. ha ha ha... well, it cheered me up. tara ...Don't leave the house with the burners on, Make sure you're never gone for too long... - Rebecca West
murphy gets dissed by hcg and friends
hey, want to see sloan's chris murphy get slammed by his good friends in hip club groove? also making an appearance in this brief encounter are drew and marc from len, greig from treble charger, and the ever bubbly jesse s. proudfoot, of the galapagos raygun. it all began with a seemingly innocent question... tara: hey you know the local rabbits? cory: yeah, we toured with them. tara: do you guys like them? do you know their big song, you're such a stupid idiot? drew: i don't like it. tara: you don't like it? greig: what was it about? tara: it's about...chris murphy. greig: oh really? tara: no, i don't know. 25 alright is about chris murphy though. derek: everything is about chris murphy though. we have a song called motherfucker, you suck ass, it's about chris murphy. tara: why don't you tell everybody about the fight you had with chris murphy and murderecords? cory: well, the first fight we had with him was in a van, when we were making the deal, but the best fight was when we played porter hall this february. he decided he was gonna come on stage with us during the song jizz so as he came up on stage, derek was drunk, this was when derek was drinking for every show, turned around and punched him. he fell and then i seen it happening. chris thought it was funny and tried to wrestle with derek, i ran as fast as i could, derek moved out of the way, i clotheslined him and we beat him down for a while and then when he got up he was all beat and brian came in with a pitcher of draft and dumped it on his head, opened up the can of shaving cream, pulled it all over him and he was standing there, pathetic, looking like a tarred and feather, i don't know, briar rabbit or something. and then while he was lying down like after we knocked him down again we rolled him off the stage, we kicked him off and told him never to come back on. and he did the same thing in halifax at birdland one time during our gig with furnace face. he tried to crawl up on the stage so we kicked him as hard as we could in the ribs and he went rolling down on the floor and everyone was laughing. he got up and he was all embarassed and he was looking around going huh...yeah and derek's like yeah and splashed a draft in his face. derek: taught chris a lesson or two. greig: i think you just got relish on the mike. (cory was eating a hot dog) jesse: aren't you on chris murphy's record label? i'm not sure about this. tara: chris murphy doesn't have a record label... derek: yeah, it's on murderecords, but it's not chris murphy's label, it's kinda an east coast collaboration. cory: see, chris just wants to take credit for us because he wants to be the brains behind us. hip club groove started murderecords, and everybody who likes thrush hermit should thank us because the money that was made off our album was what put out thrush hermit and we didn't get paid nothing for our album. but that's cool cause they're a local band from halifax who we would help anyway. tara: and you guys are from out of town anyway. cory: yeah, we're from out of town. we don't care, we have an abundance of money, we just stash our money and buy little records and things. marc: so...what do you think of mike? tara: i love mike, i stayed at his house for a few weeks. he fed me, gave me a couch to sleep on, he's an awesome guy. drew: what are you saying? marc: i'm saying we love mike. tara: he let me play with chris murphy's bass. marc: really? i pissed on that bass, when i was at his house. derek: we pissed on murphy. tara: yeah, derek, mackenzie the underdog, what do you think of chris murphy, you think he's a bit of a show off? derek: i pissed on him. tara: all right, brian, a.k.a. dj moves, what do you think about chris murphy? brian: i kicked his ass once. cory: where?? where? where did he get beat? brian: it was in... cory: mcmaster university and where else? brian: i pissed on him. we kicked his funkin' ass. cory: where was he beat? brian: he stinks man. we f'ed him up. derek: hey, hey, shut up, listen, listen, hey...(in a redneck voice) anybody can wrassle humans, calgary, anybody can wrassle humans. an' that's it. man, i wish cory was still on sloan net. then he could do all the slaggin online all the time. check ya, tara ...Don't leave the house with the burners on, Make sure you're never gone for too long... - Rebecca West

listmanagerboy survives ordeal
HALIFAX - Sloan Net list manager James R. Covey recently returned to his home after surviving oral surgery. Early reports indicate Covey, a resident of the Spryfield area, is recovering at a much more rapid pace than previously expected. Yeah, his head is about the size of Citadel Hill, but other than that, we felt he was stable enough to return home, explained his doctor. Besides, we were all getting just a little tired of his jokes. Who would have thought charades could have gotten more annoying that it already is?? Covey had been admitted to the big red brick hospital at dawn on Wednesday, July 12. While exact details of the actual surgical procedure are unavailable at this time, it is safe to assume it was gross all around. Everything went fine, he said in an E-mail message earlier today. I kinda want to go lie down. Anxious sloan netters concerned for Covey's well-being need not fret, confided a source close to the list manager. He's kind of a weird guy, anyway. mmrrgghhaa, responded Covey. His jaw will not be unwired for approximately six weeks. Hey kids, last night, the release party for the new super friendz album was held on the Haligonian III, a freakin' Dartmouth to Halifax ferry. woo! this craft has a capacity of I think 200. good for murderecords, they sold all 200 tickets. which meant they forgot to account for: a) the band (add another four) b) the boat's crew (add a few more) it got kinda freaky while the last few people were boarding, i guess. lucky for me, i got on just before they realized there were going to be too many people on board. they finally let an extra few people on and i guess colin mackenzie chose to stay on shore just so more kids could get on the boat to watch the show. talk about a nice person, eh? :) i also heard that an insurance waiver had to be signed due to the extra passengers, meaning that if anything bad happened, the crew/boat owners etc. were not responsible. eep!! 200 kids, lotsa beer, and the super friendz rockin' in the halifax harbour. it could have gotten a bit crazy. there were lotsa halifax scenesters on board, too. good old mike campbell was there right in front blocking the view of only about 12 people or so, so make sure to watch MUCH(not really much east coast rock at all)EAST in the near future for a taste of this show. ian, joel, and rob from thrush hermit, al tuck, jenny and eve from jale, lukas pearse from rebecca west, jay ferguson, and laura borealis, they were all there. the Haligonian III started moving at around 945 or so. the band got started right away. i was kinda worried about the sound, it was a very very small space and plus there was the boat noise and stuff to contend with. however, it wasn't bad at all, although drew was having some serious problems with his amp and chris managed to break his bass drum completely (we've been trying to break it all tour and it finally does tonight) half way through the set. so what did they play, um, i can remember specifically two songs that i don't think i've ever heard before and i didn't look at the set list so i dont' know their names. they played 10lbs, karate man, undertow, down in flames, restricted, rescue us from boredom, better call, and when they paid me from _mock up, scale down_ considering how little air and space they had, the set went off pretty well. matt's singing was beautiful, as always. there were a few points where his guitar playing got kind of sloppy but hey, they were in a moving boat. chris' drumming was really good, considering he was kneeling for most of the set and nearly fell into his snare one time. big show off.;) drew managed to get through the set ok, despite those problems with his amp. charles' singing was stellar, especially on down in flames. rescue us from boredom once again brought tears to my eyes, especially when matt and charles sang why we love you near the end. we toured the harbour and it all looked so amazing. the lights in both cities looked really pretty reflected on the water. it was all kinda magical and special. i think it was a really good idea to have their release party on a boat and to make sure all ages could attend. after the set was finished, a tape of the beatles _abbey road_ was played, which seemed kinda fitting, i suppose. earlier in the evening, roderick and i made puffed wheat cake and so after the set, we gave pieces of it away to our friends and to some strangers and roderick gave some to chris and matt, too. Mm. :) i was amazed chris would even take food from him, considering the huge fuss chris made at the infamous al tuck/stinkin rich show cookie incident. ;) of course i got incredibly seasick. :( colin also told us that our ticket stub was good for free entry to birdland that night. the killjoys, strawberry, orange glass, and kudtzu (?) were playing. unfortunately by the time we arrived, orange glass was finished. i did get to talk to ron bates briefly, though, and he seems really nice. he said he's gonna be pressing another 300 copies of the orange glass 7''. yay! kudtzu were kinda boring, i thought, but i probably would have thought that of any band who followed super friendz. strawberry, well, i was outside for most of their set talking to katrina about school and church. and the seasickness/fatigue was getting to me, so i also missed the killjoys. they have an instore in another few hours, though, so i guess i'll see them then. not a bad way to spend one's last friday night in halifax. tara -- Make no mistake I'm looking to get lost Let's do something stupid For once just because STONE ALONE - super friendz
the boat won't rock without a sing-a-long :) :)
hey kids near halifax, like most of you don't already know, but the super friendz CD release party is this friday at 7 pm. 7 bucks gets your advance ticket, which is apparently how much it costs to take the harbour cruise, anyway, according to jay. for more information, email or call murderecords, i guess. i hope to see you all there for one last big shindig. i think it'd be cool to head down to birdland afterwards to see orange glass and the killjoys, too. for anyone thinking of travelling around nova scotia, i would not recommend the irving big stop in enfield, particularly if you're a vegetarian. , gotta love those fries. oh well, it was james' last meal, no one ever said he had refined taste (oh ha ha...). check ya, tara -- Make no mistake I'm looking to get lost Let's do something stupid For once just because STONE ALONE - super friendz
ok, *this* was the best gig ever...
yeah yeah, i guess i say that about whatever gig i just saw, but man, could i be more happy? i'm feeling rather verbose. forgive me. today started out on a truly wicked note. i met roderick down at r.o.w. and we watched punchbuggy's instore. it was the first time they'd done an instore and they felt like (adam's words) dorks. mm, ya gotta love that sense of humor. i felt *so* old at this gig, everyone there was wearing really baggy shorts and had a skateboard and looked about grade 8 to me. *sigh*. they played a rather short set, thanks to getting angry looks from r.o.w. employees and next door neighbours. g. mostly songs from _all nite christian rollerskate_, but a few new ones, too. this ottawa power pop four piece always make me happy. ok, so they're not the most original sounding band, but hey, they do it for me. it was nice of them to drive all the way from sydney (five hours away, i guess) this morning just to do this all ages instore. rob and ian from thrush hermit were there, too. oh, and jon i'm more punk than you :P dacey, too. (you know, of that awesome band state champs). afterwards, daydream playboys jim and james met up with me and we spent several hours slaving over daydream related projects (what kind of pizza should we get, jim?) then, at last...i got a hold of grieg from treble charger at his hotel and managed to find a way to get me and my date into the six dollar gig tonight for free. yay!! i tell ya, a band forgets to put your zine on their cd rom and you can milk it forever... ;) anyway, we four headed to birdland around ten pm. played pool (jim and i played our last few balls for about 25 minutes, thats how bad we are). first band up was Sian (sianspheric??) from HaMilton, ON. they're on sonic unyon (my heroes!!!) records and have a cd out very soon. if you like swervedriver, my bloody valentine, medicine, or the really great swirling kinda smashing pumpkins (ie/ drown) songs, then you'd probably like sian. very atmospheric. roderick kept saying the bass was too loud and i would have to agree. the set *would* have been amazing were it not for that. totally nice guys, sean (the guys name, duh) wrote a review of the whole show for me, even before thrush hermit had hit the stage. go see them if you can. this was their first tour outside of ontario. next up, punchbuggy again. wooo!!! they played lucky me, lucky you, average joe, goggles pizano, if i ever, average joe, and hmmm, some more from a.n.c.r. and...they played my favorite song which they've never recorded, it's called wa wa and man, it breaks my heart every time i hear it. finally, a band that takes requests. both of these bands mentioned how much they appreciated being able to play with thrush hermit and treble charger, it was sooo nice to see bands speaking so positively about stuff like that. i kinda think that's what it should be about, just supporting each other and having fun on stage. treble charger got on next and played quite a few songs from their new EP, which i dont' have yet. i was really impressed with the new songs, though, especially this one that starts out super groovy-crunchy like (if that's possible to comprehend). from nc17 they played red 10th grade love trinity bellwoods and umtonnes more. i think shant has the set list. they did their stereolab tribute thing in the middle of one of their songs as usual. :) grieg was even wearing his stereolab tshirt. bill did his best chris murphy imitation and rosie just rocked full on. moe drummed. after treble charger played, i ran into scott tappen from trike (formerly the quahogs) and i guess they've completely finished up their cd. it should be out in about another two weeks or so. i just wanted to throw in a little plug for them, since i won't see them live for months and months now. power pop with a bit of an edge. jon dacey hates them, 'nuff said. ;) last up was the homecoming queens thrush hermit. wowzers. i keep forgetting how young they are. joel is still as friendly as ever, he wrote a little letter for my friend lisa back home. one time way back when he danced with us at a sloan gig. he even remembered my $100 speeding ticket from that night. what a thing to be remembered for. they played all new stuff except for hated it radio blaster and french inhale. I like their new stuff live a lot. the cd i still find a bit boring compared to their older material. they rocked out so good and ian's black boxers sure looked cool peeking out from those sexy white jeans (does he ALWAYS wear white jeans???). as much as i loved their set, i would have to say they were my least favorite of the four bands, but that's because i have poor music taste and also i have no indie cred and i suck. but they still were great. i can't wait to see them again. after their set i talked to grieg from treble charger for a while, i'm pretty sure they're gonna do a song for the Les Amis Du Sloan
thrush hermit? what kind of fuck band is that???
Hey kids, I have a question for anyone who saw thrush hermit on their last tour. what songs did they play? I'm sure there were a few reviews from way back when, but I've been on and off sloan net all summer, so I probably missed them. If you saw thrush hermit this summer, email and fill me in on details. _John Boomer_ is *still* the best thrush hermit release. GPO was a good song, but hmmm, the EP just doesn't do it for me. Just because they're not in high school anymore doens't mean they should stop writing highschool heartache songs. :P tlw -- Make no mistake I'm looking to get lost Let's do something stupid For once just because STONE ALONE - super friendz
happy canada day and junk like that
Hey kids, It's Canada's birthday so do yourself a favour and hug your favorite |Canadian. m. :) State Champs are playing today and if you're not able to attend one of their three gigs (boy talk about overkill ;) ) then the least you can do is order their extremely cool looking 7'' from daydream. Not that I have anything to do with that stupid label...or Jim either. ;) It's still rainy and gross here, thus proving that tara da costa and friends are little rays of sunshine. come back, kids! :( Also, I just got mail from one of my friends back home in Calgary and he mentioned the fact his band will be \crossing our lovely country this month so I'm gonna recommend them to you. Rosco Pecoe will be playing in fine cities in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec. If you like stuff like the Descendents, ALL (wait, isn't that redundant?), 7 seconds, snfu, then you'd probably like rosco pecoe. So like check your local listings and all that. oh, and more sloan net \content. the funniest thing in the whole world happened the other day. James, Shant, Roderick, and I were driving over to Jim's house to put the state c\hamps' 7''s together and we were trying to figure out if al tuck and the lo\cal rabbits were *really* playing the oasis tonight or if it was still thundermug. So someone says well, what's al tuck doing? and swear to god, right then Al walks across the street in front of the car. Oh my god, it was funny. (I don't think any of us have ever seen him in daylight.) this town is way too small. love, the flakey bubbly girl from the prairies -- I'd like to understand What you think about Why it seems so bad... Yep. A little while ago I think there were some people wondering about what sloan songs they had never done live. Jay had written here that they had done pretty well all of them. I'm wondering if they've done One Professional Care. OH...cute band alert - for those of you who like to stay in the know, make sure to keep your ear to the ground for WYZARD. They're this hot new band from Halifax. I think their first album is a concept album. It's hot. I'm not sure which of the multitudes of labels out here will be carrying their stuff, but ask around. If you like sloan, you'll like WYZARD. :) love tara -- I'd like to understand What you think about Why it seems so bad... SAND - Eric's Trip
Kids in Hell and Darkness, what's up?
Hey, Yay! I got to talk to Julie from Eric's Trip/Broken Girl tonight. :) Is it possible to be more happy? No. She showed me a picture of her baby Ben tonight, he is s cute, he was holding onto his little foot and wow... She sang tonight at Birdland and it was the most beautiful thing. I don't know exactly how but her songs never cease to amaze me. Gorgeous and simple and if you hear the lyrics you can probably understand what she means. Rebecca West also played and they were stupendously amazing although I missed my favorite song honey ant dreaming because stupid me, i got hungry and heather and roderick and me went for cookies. Lukas' knife playing on the bass thing is out of this world... too freakin cool. Anyway, to all the kids in hell and darkness, come down to R.O.W. tomorrow to see Hardship Post, ok? It's free, so you have NO excuse. And. ERIC'S TRIP!!! Birdland, tomorrow, with the MOTES. Be there. IT's my first time ever seeing them and the good/bad thing is Julie says that they'll probably play mostly new songs. Come one, come all. Hand the State Champs 7'' arrived at James' house today. :) :) Buy one, help me get out of debt, help James pay for his new porsche, help Jim buy that dream house he's been eyeing for days now Love/A Bientot, Tara -- stick around for a while listen to my thoughts it makes you smile... Hey you LES AMIS DU SLOAN people Not to be a mean girl or something but HEY!!! get your tapes into Tara Da Costa and me quick. Especially Tara. This tape has been talked about on Brave New Waves and has been written about in two nationally distributed magazines, so I'm kinda getting excited again. Tara was telling me things have been a bit slow on the receiving end for her. Come on, be quick or be dead (Iron Maiden reference for ya!) kisses and hugs to those who have already sent stuff inand hey, D'arcy, I saw yer letter in exclaim, cool. :) check y'all later, Tara, the silent partner in Daydream Records and the vocal bigmouth in the other label -- stick around for a while listen to my thoughts it makes you smile... neither good nor bad
Hey, Hope you're not all sick of this topic. I remember reading someone's mail last week and saw everyone was posting top and bottom five songs by sloan. well, you know, I try to maintain an air of mediocrity in my life. Here are two lists of five mediocre sloan songs. *Tara* (mediocre dj type, mediocre french student, etc.) 3- shame shame 3- what's there to decide 3- take it in 3- two seater 3- people of the sky (the number three thing is sort of roderick's idea which I sort of stole...) *Roderick* (mediocre physics student with mediocre social skills who incidentally is letting me use his computer in my oh so mediocre way) 500 Up Sugartune People of the Sky Deeper Than Beauty Before I Do Other mediocre things related to sloan: tara - the second underwhelmed video is rather mediocre. it wasn't as funny or as interesting as the first one but it was more interesting than many other videos out there. roderick - the whole band is kind of mediocre. their ticket prices are mediocre. they're too expensive to go see but they're not REALLY expensive, either. Well, this concludes this not interesting but yet not the lamest post. An exercise in mediocrity indeed. go back to your feeble little lives. :) :) love the procrastinators T R -- stick around for a while listen to my thoughts it makes you smile... LISTEN - Eric's Trip
More boring halifax gossip :)
Hi kids from sloan net, how I miss you all :( I decided to sneak into hell for the weekend because well... Universite Satan Anne (no that is not a typo) is full of drinking, sports, and NO music in english. Gr Friday was sloan netter Katrina Grentz's 23rd birthday and we had a little party at sloan netter Shant Pelley's house. Adam Rodenhiser and Heather Harkins were there. We listened to the new sloan single and the old demo version of same old flame - the two versions are very very different. So they filled me in with the sloan net gossip of the week. Alyson has parted ways with jale, eh? Hmmm Saturday we all went into Hell (Shant lives in Darkness) to see Rebecca West at an instore at Sam's on Barrington's. They rocked in a wicked subtle way. James Covey is on vacation with the state champs so I'm allowed to write reviews that say they rocked. :) :) In attendance at the instore: Colin Mackenzie (murder and cinnamon toast label mogul ;) ), shawn Duggan (cinnamon toast), Jenny Pierce (jale), Eve Hartling (jale), Andy MacDaniel (Leonard Conan), Chris Murphy (some band that sucks ;) ), Nina and Amanda (amanda hug'n' kiss ;) ), Allison Dale and Lukas (duh) from rebecca west of course, and... Chris Thompson from Erics Trip which was just the best. I went upstairs with Heather to talk to him which just about killed me. I asked him if they'd play calgary soon and if he knew mitch hastings and to say hi to him. :) He was super polite and very shy almost more shy than me but not. Later on I went up to the murder offices to say hi to marc the slaveboy brown and talked with jay and chris who were both amazingly nice. I picked up the new promo copy of the superfriendz tape, which so far from what i've heard is just amazing and great. We headed over (this would be katrina, shant, heather, adam, roderick and me) to the Meditterano for lunch and saw Peter Holt (from _Peter_ the erics trip disc) and also Matt Murphy, Drew Yamada, and charles Austin from the superfriendz. They were nice and said hi and stuff. We went over after that to ROW and Catherine Stockhausen was working. I bought way too many erics trip related music. We saw Stinkin Rich (aka Richard Terfry, DJ Critical, buck 65) there, too. I laughed because I totally didn't know he was white. Don't take that the wrong way, I just had no idea. when I admitted that, it made a few people laugh. Apparently I'm not the first to think that. :) We also made a stop at the old double deuce which is now stonewall tavern. Woo. :) We went to Birdland (that would be me and Roderick) to see Spine and also Hush (ACK!! the beardboy!!! Apeman!!! Eddie Vedder! Aperaham Lincoln!!!) (read: they sucked to quote Jon Dacey), and Cleveland Steamer (whatever). Spine were great, altho I was in a bad mood from the first two bands sucking. I then proceeded to kick Roderick's ass in pinball. Ok, I'm lying. I got like 200,000 points. In case you didn't know, that is bad. :( Met the legendary :) David Ledden who was quite friendly. I can't believe how many East Coast band people I've seen here. It's bizarre. Anyway, Halifax (once again) is really nice, there's lots to see (more than just bands...there's Hogey's Kick-a-Boo!! :) ) and I can't thank the sloan net kids who live here enough. What a wicked time. So thanks and hugs to Heather, Roderick, Marc, Shant, Katrina, Adam, Steve, and the rest. :) :) The fog is rolling in and my ride back to Satan Anne is just about to pick me up so this concludes our regular broadcast. :) Check ya in a week or so, Tara Lee Wittchen -- stick around for a while listen to my thoughts it makes you smile... Hi to everyone *new* on the list and especially to the old lurkers... :) According to listmanagerboy and some guy at murderecords (ha ha...) Hey! Warning!! Hi, Tara Lee Aaron/Metal Queen Wittchen here, host of Megawatt Mayhem (two hours of molten metal!) ready to answer all your metal related questions. Don't try this at home, I'm a trained professional (I've seen Judas Priest live many times...) Motorhead is a band of four ugly brutes from England who are considered to be pioneers in metal music, alongside the likes of Iron Maiden, Priest, Black Sabbath, AC/DC and so on. They are kinda like the Ramones of metal - goofy looking, all their songs are pretty well just the same song written over and over, and nearly everyone in their particular genre of music acknowledges the impact they've had on it. Pretty basic stuff, but wicked nonetheless. They have put out approximately 8,983 albums since they formed. :) Their best known tracks are Ace of Spades and Killed By Death, but my personal favorite, if you'll allow me to indulge myself is Orgasmatron, which incidentally has been covered by Sepultura. Sloan Net content: Patrick Pentland loves AC/DC. You can't tell he does in Sloan songs, but if you've ever heard that Otis Haynes track Gimme the Keys, wow, the banger comes out to play!!! Believe It!!!! JOEY JOEY numba two and three
I swear to God, Tara Da Costa and I *don't* plan these things, but anyway... Yes, finally JOEY JOEY #2 _and_ #3 are ready. Yet another sloan/east coast/canadian indie fanzine. :) It's bordering on x-files material, but I actually stayed up all night last night, too, finishing my zines. *weird* :) :) The reason it took so long is #2 was just getting huger and huger (more huge? aw, who cares...) and finally I realized last week I'd never be able to staple 4 million pages. So I made a new cover, changed a few things, and voila, two new issues! Yay! Number two has: treble charger - lotsa photos, five pages of information the sweaters placebo rosco pecoe sky suspended state champs - wicked photos of the band, too eric's trip, sorta special guest appearances by My Bloody Valentine, Material Issue, Hardship Post, Thrush Hermit, Elastica, Nation of Ulysses. OH...and of course, tonnes of SLOAN stuff. It's *really* obsessive this time around. :) Plus the rest of that really boring Chris Murphy interview, all million pages (geez, he sure talks a lot...) :) Number two also features a WICKED cover photo of said Murphy boy that has to be seen to be believed. It's 58 pages long. And now, number threeanother WICKED cover photo, this time of Jay Ferguson being the hot rock star that he is. This issue features all the junk that didn't quite fit in number 2, plus some extra tasty treats. Examples? You finally get to see what Tara Da Costa (!) looks like, some garbage on KISS if you can believe it, a snazzy cartoon about someone in sloan getting beaten up by a freakish My bloody valentine fan (yes really), advice from *other* members of sloan (we declined murphy's advice after what happened with his advice in number 1 - hee hee), guitar lessons, recipes, laura borealis art stuff. Plus murderecords and cinnamon toast updates, info on your favorite new record labels Zedd, Endearing, and Kelp, a new travel update (MONTANA!!), travel games, the unofficial sloan net song, a dumb story, an indie cred challenge between patrick pentland, chris murphy and some loser chick, and stuff on Stinkin' Rich. OHand the wickedest contest ever! You could win free superfriendz and murderecords junk!! :) Number 3 is only 30 pages long. So just imagine how big number 2 *would* have been (you do the math...) Sohow do you get one or both of these sick over the top zines? Easy as pie. I'm bringing them all down East with me, so if you live in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, you can probably just buy 'em off me while I'm down there. However, if you don't live there, you might want to mail me some money and I'll send em off. I'm going to use the Daydream Records address until the end of June. Well, here's a little story for ya... So I'm on this *hot* date with my friend Jason. We went down to the republik to go see Huevos Rancheros and the Real MacKenzies. As this opening band plays (I dunno know their name...) this guy taps me on the shoulder. I thought he wanted me to move out of the way, but no, it turns out he wants to talk to me. Ask Marc Brown how well I react to this sort of thing. :) This guy asks me if I am from Halifax and points to my tshirt which is indeed the murderecords tee. I shake my head and confess I've not been there since 1976. :) We get to talking and he explains that he came out here from Halifax last fall and bla bla bla. He asks me if I have friends or family out there after I explain that yes, in two weeks I will be there. We began to compare names of people we knew. I ask him if he knew Todd Calder from Trike/Quahogs/System Overload :) and he nods. I explain Todd is actually here in Calgary. He laughs and then we start to talk about the out of the fog too compilation which as you all know :) the quahogs did NOT play on. Names tossed around that may be familiar to all on this list included Patrick Pentland, Cliff Gibb, and Peter Rowan. He knew the kids from Essen, too.;) Anyway, it turns out this guy is actually the drummer from Donner Party Reunion. I just *laughed* when I heard that. :) I return to my *hot* date and watch the end of the set. During the final song, the singer announces who's who in the band and where they are from. Get this4 out of 6 of them were from Halifax. If you had seen this band you would probably understand my next statement a little more clearly. Not all things East Coast are good. ;) Well, then again, the purple helmets already proved that. Oh...and I got scotch whiskey tossed onto my shiny new cords thanks to the Real MacKenzies. Wahooo! Love a wee lassie, Tara MacWittchen Ps/ Obviously the date didn't end the way it should have or I wouldn't be up at 2:15 am posting to sloan net. ;) tee hee... :+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+: : drink your whiskey and scotch there: : be a Scot if you dare: : : : *MacSOCKET*: :+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+: : *daydream records* : : (obligatory shame`lass' plug) : :+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:

Hey, kat wrote: PS underwhelmed was 1st performed in feb/91 at the very 1st sloan show ever so I don't think it would have been at least a conscious ripoff of teen spirit (released months later)...1 of those accidents I guess :) (tho to me it sounds nothing like it)... You know what? Criss wrote underwhelmed in something like 1987 cause when I tried to accuse him of riding on Nirvana's big wave o' stardom from the line and I said nevermind from Underwhelmed (thanks tdc for puttin' him on the spot for me!!) he got all defensive and shakey ;) and blurted out hey, I wrote Underwhelmed in like 1987 or something... Nirvana - America's answer to Sloan? SLOAN - ask for it by name. Moms who care give 100 per cent genuine SLOAN(tm) I just wrote an exam so leave me alone :P love, tara leeving for hell in 2 weeks 2 days...

Nope, I hate to correct you, but there is no Moonsocket on the Sonic Unyon comp. Unless they are going under some sort of different banem and I seriously doubt it... I guess you could say Moonsocket appears under a different name. Track 8 Hard Feelings and Track 10 ??? are credited to `Chris'. As in Chris Thompson. As in Moonsocket. :) Incidentally, for those of you who still have not picked up this compilation, there's a great Eric's Trip song Evie on it as well. Not to mention songs by Tristan Psionic, Grasshopper, nc17 (now known as treble charger), Sponge (now known as Smoother), Gleet (an eight minute moody track, kinda like sunny day real estate, i think), and a few more bands. Oh...and don't forget Otis Haynes. Patrick Pentland proves his love to AC/DC, I guess. :) It's available only on CD, I think, through, as mentioned above, Sonic Unyon Records.
