Re: [RCSE] how high really

2006-08-26 Thread AMA3655
My Dad was one of very few human beings that was born in Taft back when,
in 1927 or thereabouts. I have heard a lot of tales about living in a tent, big
cats trying to eat his little sister, Grandpa drilling the first hole deeper
than a mile, and of course the legendary Kern Mesa Thermals.

Dad says that he flew a lot of free flight very early in the morning. After
the sun had been up an hour he packed everything up and went home. Why? When
he first started he tried trimming out a few free flight planes after 8 AM. He
lost 5 models one morning. He said that you could give a free flight a hand
toss to check trim and watch the model disappear virtually every time. If
your tool box wasn't nailed down it was probably going to be lost as well.
Absolutely perfect conditions for XC, but devastating for a kid with a bunch
of
free flight planes and limited budget.

XC is an acquired taste, like a triple fermented bottle conditioned ale. It
takes a lot of effort and some heartache and failure to really appreciate it
when it works right. Conditions must be right, equipment must be right, and
the participants must be ready and have their heads in the right space to take

advantage of the event. But when all of this happens it's magic without any
equal.

As far as how high can you get? You can get a LOT higher than anybody
would believe. It's a Zen Thing that no instrumentation will ever capture. If
you
can see the stabs then you're not ready to get on course yet. If you think
that you need to see the airplane to fly it then think less.

When I talk about being at 8500 ft... the stabs had
long since disappeared, the wings were literally
toothpicks, and were disappearing as well - the fuse
was non-existent. That's how Joe consistently beat the
pants off all the CC guys for all those years. The
plane was always in the optimum position - right
behind the tailgate of the truck, and he would only
stop to thermal in a hat sucker, and he never let the
model get much lower.

Like I say... to be successful at cross country - If
you are EVER comfortable seeing the plane, you're NOT
high enough...

At Taft, many years ago, I had to put in a time for
Joe on Friday (I'd never flown cross country - Joe was
out of town, and just needed a time and could make up
whatever I lost the following 2 days). I was at the
far turn in record time, I had the thermals for the
ride home marked, and we were haulin' ass. That was
right when I lost Wiley... Wiley did come home the
following day unscathed(somebody found it about 7
miles off course), but I'll never hear the end of
it...

I've never really enjoyed cross country becasue of
that experience.

Brent -

As with so many issues that we all worry about endlessly, this one is pretty minor. Yes, the plane will be very slightly more efficient if you mix the flaps with the ailerons correctly. But, if a guy without his flaps and ailerons mixed puts his plane in better air and closer to the pin he'll beat you every time.

The right answer is to set the plane up as best you can late at night when you can't fly anyway, and spend every sparedaylight hour outlearning how to fly and spot lift better in every conceivable situation. Try the different programming and see if you can tell any difference. Mostly you can't, so don't worry about it. As my OFB Jim Thomas says, "Do that pilot sh*t Bubba."

Yipee! I just got a couple of JR's new 790 rxs from the brown truck. Very
easy to set up, PCM, and tiny with end block connectors. Just what I've been
wanting. I slapped one in my new 2 meter Duck (with conventional tail - thanks
Larry!) and will try to see if it works tomorrow. Being a JR product I'm
betting that it will work pretty well.

Those of you who are looking for a really GREAT 2 meter should get hold of
Larry Storie and get a Duck. But remember that good things are worth waiting
for, getting one between now and the Nats might be tough unless you are willing
to make it worth Larry's trouble. The Duck comes ready to pop the servos in
and fly. It's delivered the closest to finished of any plane I ever had, and
that's saying a lot. I've flown it a few times and it's a sheer joy. It even
looks funky, always an added bonus.

Those who say that 2 meters suck are missing something. They are different.
They don't have the same L/D, granted. But my unlimited ships don't have near
the roll rate of a 2 meter. The silly things are a lot of fun.

[RCSE] Re: Winch motor timing

2006-03-28 Thread ama3655

Allan -
Rotating the end cap into the direction ofshaft rotation advances the timing. As to how far you need to advance it, that's your call. It isdependant on your style, what king of planes you fly, winch drum diameter, how much string you keep on the spool, battery condition, and what direction the wind is blowing.Personally I keep mine just a couple degrees advanced from the stock setting. My brushes and windings last pretty well. I can still throw an Icon to the moon. I am giving up a bit of line speed and getting a bitmore torque by retarding the timing a bit from a more advanced setting.

One thing to watch for is battery and wiring problems. If the voltage to the motor is reduced for any reason it will stall more easily, overheat quicker, and start melting stuff.

happy trails - Rob G

I'm reinstalling "Real Balls" on all of our club winches and I would like to get a definitive answer as to how to advance/retard the timing on them. All of the links on the "Winch Doc" site are down,so any advice would be appreciated. I currently have one set-up with an Injoy motor that is so "hot" it melts the field leads in half. It does however give you some really exciting launches ! Allan ParsonsOrlando Buzzards

Just to make it very clear, what Rob means by "INTO the direction of shaft rotation" is "OPPOSITE the direction of shaft rotation", both statements meaning the opposite of "IN the direction ofshaft rotation" (which retards timing)- bubbaspeak can be very subtle!. I was advised back when that 6 -8 degrees advance was about right, YMMV. On no account do you want to retard timing, the current goes upa lot. I found all this out on the occasion of reversing a motor to accommodate adding abrake set-up. Good Lift!

I never have figured out why the Alpha 4 lovers are so darned loyal, but that's OK. Battery chargers aren't anything but a fancy power supply, but some are indeed shiny and more user friendly than others.

I have a Ginzel Spectra that will charge any battery pack I've ever had, if you push the right buttons. From teeny tiny 3 cell DLG packs to my 3 bank marine lead acid monster in the bass boat, the Ginzel can do the deed. NiCd, NiMH, LiPo, Lead Acid, whatever.

BUT, with a LiPo battery pushing the wrong buttons can be pretty ugly. Accordingly, I also got a dedicated LiPo charger to do those with. I always remove the pack from the airframe and charge it in a safe spot. Indoors that means an old ammo can or fire safe.

A really good timer/caller will take care of the necessary things for a
pilot. A good timer/caller will know what his/her pilot requires. If a good
goat
is needed the timer/caller will find the goat. If a good beer is needed that
will also be provided. Sometimes a good swift kick in the ass is
deserved/needed, a good timer/caller can do that as well.

[RCSE] Re: V-Tail

2005-09-08 Thread ama3655

Dave you are creeping me out here. Bella Abzug?

Justin -

V or cruciform (neat word, huh?) tails both work well if properly designed, trimmed well, and flown well.

V tails are harder for some designers that aren't used to them, and they require more effort to trim out well.

There may be some weight or efficiency benefits for a V tail, but they aren't enough for me to detect in the air.

I've given up on them because they are a bitch to pack.

[RCSE] Re: Futaba Transmitter Synthesizer

2005-08-26 Thread AMA3655

Just bought one of the new Futaba Synthesizer for my Super 8 transmitter.
Someone told me that there units use additiontal power from the battery pack
and it would be a good idea to upgrade my pack. They do seem to generate more
heat than a standard module.
Any one have and answer or opinon?

Thanks, Ron

Ron -
Sounds like it would be a pretty nice feature during those winter fishing
trips down here in Alabama. You could use it to keep your hands warm. The last
rf module I had that did that was an old Airtronics one. Somebody told me
that an rf module was supposed to put out rf energy, which is a different
wavelength than heat energy. Guess somebody at Futaba must have got a little
mixed
up. My newer JR and Multiplex 'mitters don't seem to put out much heat. I
leave 'em at home when I go fishing. Heck, my Evo will transmit for 8 or 9
hours
on the stock battery, but it won't warm your hands up at all. What's up with
that?

Hope you bums all have fun up in Lexington this weekend. Say hello to El

A good diagnostic tool for this can be a hand held vibratory engraver. Power the system up and touch the receiver case with the vibrator. If it turns you on then you need to find a new hobby. If the system goes nuts then start checking further - replace the crystal, try it again, etc. I would bet that it isn't a battery problem in this case.

[RCSE] Nats championship intensity

2005-08-08 Thread AMA3655

Yep, I admit it. I go to the Nats for one reason. I'm there to have fun.
Flying toy gliders at contests is fun, hanging out with my many friends is fun,
drinking the occasional beer is fun. Sitting ina chair while flying RES at
the Nats is fun.Winning trophies is fun too, near as I recall (it's been a
while, but Cheesy Woman says I have enough anyway).

Fun fly? I laugh at the concept.

Intensity? I gave up on being a stress puppy a while back. There have been
times in my life when"intensity" was appropriate, but toy airplane
contests don't seem to be a good reason to get "intense" to me. If you want
intensity join theArmy and go to Iraq. If you're lucky they might even let
you play with toy planes, in a very intense and competitive way.

[RCSE] Nats

2005-08-02 Thread ama3655
Well, summer camp is over for this summer and it was great as always.

The AMA site continues to get better each year as inprovements are made. The changes are becoming minor as time goes on and there are fewer things that need to be fixed. This is really a nice place to fly large RC soaring events.

The contest administrationcontinues to be awesome. An army of LSF volunteers run the contest, with site support from the AMA.From Soaring Event Director Marc Gellart tothe shortest cart driver (she needed a couple of 2 by 4's strapped to the gas pedal on thegolf cart to reach) this is the best and most effective group of volunteer workers I've ever encountered. We're not worthy.
We go to Muncie to fly. If you take enough planes and spend the entire week you get to fly a bunch. Muncie is notorious for interesting weather. If you stay the week you will generally get to fly in some no brainer air, and some air that will humble the best pilots among us. This year was no exception. We saw weather that was hotter than humans enjoy, and a couple of days of perfect cool clear air. Every day saw periods of great lift and periods that slammed everybody. That's what makes man on man soaring challenging and rewarding. The pilot that makes the right decisions immediately gets rewarded. Everybody else loses.

For the first time in my memory the winning planes were all built by their pilots, andat least partiallydesigned by the pilot as well. The ESL guys swept the top places. The ESL has been a wellspring of design and fabrication innovations for several years, and now their finishes are showing that the piloting skills areexcellent as well. So what planes did the best? Just like always, it was the plane that was put into the right air and landed well. It's still the pilot that wins.

For some of us the most important part of the week at soaring summer camp is the social part. The folks you meet at Muncie are a lot of fun and keep coming back. There is an ever growing bunch of folks who wouldn't miss this week for anything. I always make a couple new friends at Muncie, and get to see a bunch of old friends. We all get to fly together and hoist a tankard of ale at the end of the day. It just don't get no better than that in this Bubba's opinion.

You know it's kind of funny. We spend all this time trying to build the cleanest plane possible with internal linkages and as little drag as possible trying to get that last bit of performance. Then we strap on the large drag inducers know as skegs to stop us on landing. What's wrong with this picture? :-)Ed Franz

[RCSE] Re: top or bottom driven ?

I like bottom driven flaps and ailerons for various reasons. According to
Dr. Hepperle a properly faired set of 4 linkages on the bottom of a wing add
around 3% total drag to a typical F3B airframe. You can go dig around his
website and find a number of interesting tidbits.

hi all,
I've been asked this a few times, and I give my opinion,

What gets better mechanical advantage, top or bottom
driven linkage, and how much does the drag of bottom driven
really effect things, if any ?

My vote goes towards bottom driven.
I can always get the throws I want, easy to set up and adjust,

I used the Channel Checker to verify the channel number of all transmitters

the antenna was almost touching the Channel Checker. The transmitter
checked good when the antenna was moved a foot away. Not all transmitters
affected the Channel Checker this way. Made me wonder if that was swamping
or was the transmitter that illuminated more than one diode at close range
was splattering a little. Something I want to investigate if I run into it
again while not rushed by trying to get a contest under way.

Bubba brought his transmitter over to be checked with the Channel 12 pin
clipped to the antenna. Channel Checker showed that the transmitter was on
Channel 58. I ask Bubba if this was one of those dial-a-crash
transmitters. He said this was a crystal controlled transmitter and pulled
the RF module to show me. On the inside was a channel 58 label. Bubba was

Leaves a lot more time for napping and beer drinking (AFTER the last round only, of course)with friends. This is a clear case of CD abuse. I say that we the pilots form a union and go on strike!

Use to, when our contests were smaller, bringing down the group was not really an issue, but now with 25-40 fliers and very long task times (13-15 minutes all day) we hustle to have as many rounds as we can get in. Marc

According to the AMA, who has to sign off on the insurance papers,it is a valid measure of interfield interference. After having participated in the process I also think that it's valid. You might want to check out the procedural documentation before you reject it out of hand. AMA document535-F outlines the procedures and may be downloaded from the AMA website if you are a member of the AMA.

Hi Rob,

Your test with a glitch counter is not a vaild measure of interference, unless the model carrying ithas been calibrated in a "clean environment", like a radio test chamber, and the area under test has been profiled across the user'sfrequency band. I've had hundreds of glitches recorded on calibrated devices and not seen a single twitch from the plane. FYI...

[RCSE] Re:Signal strength switch?

2005-03-31 Thread ama3655

Fact: It is very unlikely anyone flying a mile away is adversely affecting anyone at your field, irregardless of the frequency. Remember...the receiver would need to see on-frequency RF that is equal or greater from the offending transmitter to gain control.

The above statement is unfortunately incorrect. I used to think the same way, but I have had my mind changed. We (North Alabama Silent Fliers) unfortunately lost our field due to construction recently. In an effort to find a new field we tried to move to a nice spot that is around 2.5 miles from an existing RC site. We borrowed a small glitch counter from the AMA (thanks to Steve Kaluf) and went trhough the procedures outlined by AMA to test for interference between the two sites. Testing was done with a .25 sized trainer aircraft, flown pretty far out but not near as far out as I've flown an unlimited glider. The "interfering" transmitter easily registered at the airplane from the distant (prospective) field.

I also match the flap and ailerons for all flight modes. The 30%-50% mix
applies to the flaps when they track aileron control inputs. This is a handling

issue.

All of this stuff is somewhat specific to the type of plane and varies
somewhat for the same plane in different flight modes. Most of the mixes and
presets are tweaked to gain better handling characteristics. I'll rely the
designer of the plane to tell me the proper camber settings for speed,
thermal, and
cruise. Most everything else is adjusted to suit my personal desires, giving
my plane the handling characteristics that I'm looking for.

We need to realize that glider control setup and trimming involves
efficiency and handling. The efficiency stuff is somewhat specific for a
particular
design. The handling stuff is somewhat specific for a particular pilot.

reduce the drag between the interfering surfaces. It seems the same would
hold true for the thermal mode. Shouldn't the flap and ailerons move the
same amount to keep drag to a minimum where the flap and aileron meet?

The other mix I often find missing is using the flaps as ailerons. The
flaps should be moving with the ailerons at 30-50% of the aileron travel.

If you get the ailerons and flaps moving together and put in elevator to
camber mixing, you will be amazed at how much nicer your model flies.

I got the machineable tungsten round rod which is approximately 97% as heavy as pure tungsten and tried to cut it into small sections on my Atlas 6 lathe..not a chance in hell that was gonna happen. A club members father worked at an aerospace lab doing prototype machining and his father tackled the machinable tungsten and 5 hours later had it cut into nice 2 oz. chunks..cant imagine how much it would have cost if I had to pay the regular rate. All said and done the Sharon could ballast up an additional 1.85 lbs. over minimum weight and if I had to pay the going price the ballast system probably would have ran an additional $400 for materials and machining. Plus the fact that a rare earth magnet is fairly dense. I bet that a piece of
tape is significantly lighter than the rare earth magnets that would replace as
a wing retainer. All in all rare earth magnets are a brilliant misapplication
of technology in this instance.

On the other hand, rare earth magnets would make dandy nose weights. If you are
trying to stop the nose of the plane close to a big steel nail

happy trails - Rob Glover

From: Bill Swingle
Now that we've discussed this at length, has anyone noticed that the
magnetic force is not actually suited to this application? Meaning, any
displacement of the parts involved reduces the attractive force
significantly. But, what is really called for is the opposite
characteristic.

Thus, to make up for the exponential drop in force when displaced; the force
when attached must be over designed. Possibly leading to other limitations
which must be accommodated.

Just a thought.

I've bought a lot of winch line over a long time span from Memphis Net and

melted a little bit here and there. If you can see this in a new spool of line
call the company and let them know, they will probably take care of you.

over 3 days of flying the scores will sort without resorting to crazy landing
tasks. If you do have fly off rounds then keep the previous scores, and no throw
outs.

The location would depend a little bit on what time of year. In general I
think that the Midwest is best, and move north or south to catch some decent
weather at whatever time of year you fly. Proximity to good motels, food, and
travel connections is also key.

The main thing is getting to fly and visit with old flying buddies.

made it a great wing servo 10 years ago.

Today that is not the same. They do occupy a space in my servo pantheon - but
the space is at the bottom rear of a drawer that hasen't been opened for many

one is elevator and rudder on the left stick) My present Futaba 8UAX
makes the conversion very simple. I have owned transmitters which were
very difficult to convert.

Can the transmitter operate in a standard FM mode such as would be
compatable with a normal FM receiver? Yes, I know the shift polarity does
not match Futaba and Hitec but on 50 MHz band they are all the same so I
plan on continuing to use my collection of FMA and Futaba receivers. I
may have to reorder the servo connections however.

Many thanks, Jim MacLean Melbourne, FL

Re: [RCSE] Ballast ??

2005-01-28 Thread AMA3655
Walter -

I think that you'll break your press before you compress any tungsten. It's
pretty hard stuff.

Have you checked with CMW in Indianapolis? They are a company that specializes
in tungsten alloys for uses like ballast. You don't really want pure tungsten,
get one of their alloys with a couple percent copper and nickel so you can
machine it.

There are other metals that are even heavier than tungsten, but they start
getting expensive and in some cases dangerous.

Thanks for the response. Several brought up a good point saying after you
mix powder w/epoxy/etc you may not gain much over lead which may be right.
How about opinions on an idea I had. Get some brass tube, silver braze a
brass plate(thin) on to one end, grind it down to the contour of the tube.
I have a hydraulic press. I was thinking about the pouring some powder into
the open end of tube I prepared, compress it down with the press, add some
more powder, press it down,
etc, etc til I fill the tube, I would then seal the end with some filler, or
could even, providing the tungsten doesnt react to heat, just braze a end
cap on it like I did to the opposite end. What do you think?

I built and flew one a few years ago. It's a very nice kit and a pretty good
flying plane. The mods previously noted are probably a good idea, but I flew
mine without them and enjoyed it. You can blow it up on a winch if you have a
heavy foot, but if you excersize a nominal amount of restraint it will do fine.

Fellow fliers,

I'm looking to build a RES ship to fly in our local club contests. While doing
a Google search, I ran across the Majestic 110 RES from Laser Arts.

Question: has anyone had any experience with this kit - pros or cons? Flying
characteristics?

You can kick the CA off with some baking soda. Dump a box of Arm and Hammer
on the spill and you will have instant concrete. Rent a jackhammer to bust it
out of the cupboard.

Folks I'm very allergic to CA fumes..I do keep a 2 oz bottle in my cupboard
to use OUTSIDE in front of a fan... (Foolish I know)
Lately I have been suffering the worst cold and cold symptoms I have ever
had...
This evening while looking in my cupboard I discovered I have accidentally
knocked over my CA bottle..The lid came off and 1/2 the bottle of CA has
seeped out all over my cupboard...I have been breathing these fume for a
couple hours each evening and thinking I had the worst cold of my life...
Now that I have discovered this, what is the best way to delute, dry it
up, clean it up?? Any ideas.??
I'll have to go to Lowes and get a respirator to wear while trying to
clean it up..I have had to get out of there till I can clean it up with out
breathing any more fumes..It is CA+ and is very sticky and still damp and
putting off plenty of fumes..
Thanks for any ideas...Brian

Re: [RCSE] Glider Bag choices

2004-12-16 Thread AMA3655
You guys have some pretty pricey taste in bags. I always got along pretty
well with a good old black Hefty. Sometimes you gotta be careful when you stuff

the remains of your plane in one, the broken off ends of the spars can poke
holes in them.

I get them in the large boxes. I need 'em.

Whenever I finish a new plane I fold a hefty bag up neatly and tape it
inside the fuselage. That way I have one handy when I need it. I wish I could
find
a really tiny shovel that would fit in the plane - it would save a trip back
to the truck when I plant one really deep. I hate to leave a battery buried
in the field, it ain't environmentally kerrect.

The biggest problem with the new brand F radio is that it comes from Futaba.

[RCSE] Re: Question for Modelers Familiar w/Shellac

2004-12-08 Thread AMA3655
Jim -

I haven't used shellac to do this, but I have achieved some pretty light
finishes.

I use hair spray for the initial coats. Get the cheapest large aerosal cans you
can find. Fog a few sparse coats on, sanding very lightly with 400 grit between
coats. You only need to knock down the stickups. If you keep the initial coats
light and let them dry well you won't hurt a foam wing, and the weight buildup
will be minimal.

After you get the wood sealed with hairspray go ahead with the waterborn poly.
I like to wipe it on with an old t shirt or a foam brush, keeping the coats
thin and many.

happy trails - Roob Glover

As a woodworker I haven=B9t used but read about shellac as the sealer/under
coat for wood finishes. Shellac is accepted as a good barrier against wate=
r
vapor, but not liquid water, and any finish will stick to it well. So I
thought it might be a very good under or only coat for balsa tail parts on
HLG=B9s etc. Don Stackhouse of DJ Aerotech describes the use of water born
(not a solvent in this case) polyurethane and that care must be taken to ge=
t
a very thin first later coats. One reason for that would be the fact tha=
t
wood so readily absorbs water then changing it=B9s dimensions due to swelling
of the wood fibers. Don's main goal seems to be to limit weight added
though.

Have any of you tried shellac, which uses alcohol as its solvent? I am
wondering if a 3 pound cut, for example, would penetrate less than a 1 poun=
d
cut. [Shellac is mixed as x pounds of flakes to 1 gallon of alcohol. N.B.
you must use de-waxed shellac if you intend to over coat it with any other
finish.]

[RCSE] Re: Icon wiring harnesses

2004-11-22 Thread AMA3655
To quote Barry Anderson - I must be nuts getting in the middle of this.

But this is no surprise to those of you who know me. What some of you may not
know is that I have also piddled with wiring harnesses through the years as a
small part of my job.

Don Peters just sent me a new Icon, to replace one that I stuffed through
pure stupidity. He asked me if I would like a really light one, the answer
seemed
obvious as I already had a medium one. He delivered a very light one, as
promised. Very skinny paint. He goes to a lot of trouble to wring the last few
grams out of a plane, and I appreciate it.

I've had Icons with both the old and new style harness. They are both very
competently done, and both robust. They are also both heavy. This is a good
thing when it comes to wire - copper is heavy, and when you pay for good wire
you
get what you pay for by weight to a certain extent.

But alas, not exactly what I wanted in a very light plane. Long story short,
I put the plane on a copper diet. It was pretty easy to remove a couple ounces
from the Icon harness, and still have a harness that should work. I didn't
modify an existing harness, I started over. I could have taken more weight out,
but hopefully I stopped short starting a fire when I pull the flap stick back.

Is it still robust? I think so, and time will tell.

Will I build any more for other people? No.

Will I tell you what I did? If you have to ask then it would not be prudent.

Is my Icon lighter than yours? Yes, I'd bet that it is.

Will an Icon that weighs 69 ounces fly better than one that weighs 72 ounces?
It will if I put it in the right piece of air, at the right speed.
