I really do understand your frustration. To be completely honest with
you, you can certainly return to 1.1.18. But you do have to realize
that you are sticking with a complete dead end.

You can do that. Heck there are people out there still running the last
version of the Mozilla suite, Netscape 7.2, even a few still trying to
get Communicator to work. The older the abandoned product gets, the less
functional it becomes.

For a good while, probably quite a while, 1.1.18 will continue to work,
and work quite well. But the days are numbered and the clock is
ticking. I doubt that you will see any security updates for the 1.1 line.

If you value the suite approach, and if you want to have a product that

work is the only real way to go.

The only other real option is to go Firefox/Thunderbird. Its a good

conversion problems going that route as you will staying with SeaMonkey.

I am sorry this has been so difficult for you.

Lee

Lee,

You are making valid points, but one or two more need to be made.

Users who are not eager to experiment with .0 products are wise to stay
with the product they are using today *until* the most obvious bugs are
ironed out in the next release. This has always been true, and still is
today.

Personally, I like to keep a middle road, sticking to the previous
version of a software while experimenting with a new one. Very seldom do
I feel I *need* to switch to a new version. I usually wait to do the
switch until, and only until, the new version does at least for me as
much as the previous version. I do not move up if doing so means losing
some features I find really useful and not being able to replace them by
a satisfactory equivalent.

In SM 2.0 case, bugs set aside, this means waiting until new add-ons are
developed specifically for this version.

Knowing the product will not go any further does not matter to me as
long as it does the job. And since the best software always have their
shares of security holes, new ones showing up as fast as old ones are
plugged, I'd rather trust my combination of hardware and software
firewall and a good antivirus.

I believe that the SM project deserves all the help it can get from its
users, and remaining on the sidelines without contributing by pointing
out problems, in a non-aggressive manner, is not very productive. The
other side of the coin is, developers, although they may feel unduly
criticized sometimes, and I can sympathize, should make sure the merits
of remarks are duly examined, in an open-minded manner.

Click on the 'Report ID' for the most recent.
That will open

Sorry, but it was a bad move to remove it. It was one of the best
features of 1.18, and lots of people are missing it. I know I'm staying
with 1.18 because of it.

would like it back before I switch again must use it 3-4 times a day

What happened to the ability to copy/move emails to any mailbox?

2009-11-03 Thread Pat Welch

Hi.

I have a lot of folders under the main Inboxes that I use to save copies
of Email in specific categories.

Under SM 1.19 it when I clicked on the Message menu after displaying the
message and selected Copy to or Move to, ALL the available folders were
displayed.

Now, ONLY the new "Recent" drop box will appear, not giving me access to
all folders, and the folders there do not ID the main folders they are
from (I have, for example, 5 Info folders under 5 email accounts).

Now, if I back out of the displayed message, and right click on the
Email summary in the main pane, I get the old full folder access back!

Sounds like a bug.

If you type CTRL-C twice, can you then paste? Just asking.

Well, I downloaded and installed it on Win 2K, SP4. It installed fine,
and migrated the profile without issue. Copy/Paste is working fine too.

I wonder if there might be a profile issue that is causing your problem.
Have you tried starting in Safe Mode, to see if it works? If that
fails, try creating a new profile and see if it works.

It does work, we just need to see what is causing the problem in your setup.

First of all, what version of OSX are you running? Note SM 2.0 does

But as a workaround, try downloading the image using Safari - one sure

Well the proper sig delimiter should be a dash dash space. Sig should
work, note that it is on an account by account basis. You must set up
the sig for each account. If you use the same sig on multiple accounts,
save it to a text file, and link to it in Account settings.

I'll set a sig to this reply, to test.

I reckon we'll need to find a relevant bug report and or create a new
one. That's pretty much the only way to get it fixed in 2.0.1 & even
then it may be as simple as making the default
'news.update_unread_on_expand;false'.

Alright I've got it.

I tried downloading and mounting the 2.0 dmg, on a Panther machine,
knowing it would fail. The message I got was exactly what you report.

Panther ( OSX version 10.3.9) has been out of support for quite a while
now. SM 1.1.18 is the last version that will run on Panther.

If you machine iw running Panther, it is almost certain that it will run
Tiger (10.4.x). Tiger is still receiving updates from Apple, and will
run SM 2.0, as well as many other programs that will no longer run on
Panther.

You can find Tiger install disks available on eBay and Amazon for pretty
reasonable prices. It would be worth doing.

If you want, post the specs of your machine. We can advise you as to
whether or not it run Tiger, or perhaps Leopard.

You could modify profiles.ini directly to specify an absolute path for

Yes, thats what I did in advance, but the migration did not always start

Another question: What does seamonkey check before starting the

Because it's wrong, -migration is correct and should work in combination

It is all very well to learn about migrating profiles if SeaMonkey is
open, but I can't get it to even open or to display the migration
wizard. I tried again today to install disabling all my firewalls
(Comodo) and the Resident Shield on my AVG8 anti-virus program. No
change. Again the installation proceeded through to the finish stage.
Then if I clicked on a desktop icon or on SeaMonkey.exe in Program

disappear leaving a screen that does not show any activity at all.

Yes. It seems like I have the same behavior.

What news servers aren't working for you?

I'm trying to post using newsread.uslec.net

Do you have any extensions or security programs that might be interfering?

I have Zone Alarm running. Seemed ok with the previous version I had
installed which was, I think, 1.1.18.

What O/S or platform are you using?

Win XP.

Check to make sure all your news server settings are correctly set,
individually [i.e., I have 2 news server that require no authentication,
but one does].

I've tried both ways. BTW, when I first installed 2.0 I had to fiddle with
the settings for email, unchecking the user name and password setting for the
outgoing SMTP server.

I seem to remember that I had a similar problem with mail connections,
after my *first* update to SM 2.0 beta. Something had changed my outgoing
SMTP settings to require secure settings.

I think what I just described above.

Plus, you should add your experience w/ more details to the bug that has
been filed by Bill Davidsen:

Ok, I did that too.

You could modify profiles.ini directly to specify an absolute path for
the new profile. I don't know whether SM will create the path upon
migration so you might want to do that yourself in advance.

Another question: What does seamonkey check before starting the
migration? Why does the cmdlineargument "-migrate" not always start the
migration?

Because it's wrong, -migration is correct and should work in combination
with -P .

Thomas H. George wrote:

I am trying to transfer a profile from iceape to seamonkey2 on 64 bit

That's not the ideal guide since it assumes a transfer of profiles for
the same major version which doesn't apply here. Instead, read this:

Path=/home/tom/.mozilla/tom
(...)
but if I start seamonkey it treats this as a new empty profile.

That's because SM 1.1 and SM 2 handle profiles differently. The path in
profiles.ini points directly to the actual profile folder while SM 1.1
usually stores the actual profile data in a folder below the one that is
named like the profile, e.g. /home/tom/.mozilla/tomtom/abc123de45.slt/ -
anyway, for the switch from 1.1 to 2.0 profile migration as described on
the page accessible through the link I gave above is recommended instead
of messing with profiles.ini.

I am having a similar problem. Last night I installed Seamonkey 2.0

opened 2.0 and I used it for a while.

This morning I booted up my computer and opened Seamonkey only to find

Searching the hard drive shows 2 installations: Program Files/

SM 2.0: Threaded message display order

2009-11-03 Thread William Morrison
OK, I did what you suggested and reinstalled 1.1.18 over itself and all
is still good with it and installed 2.0 to a new directory named
Seamonkey2.0. Now here's where it get interesting, I checked the profile
manager in 1.1.18 and it list no profile and if I try to create a new
one 1.1.18 opens as if it is a new install i.e. no bookmarks, no email,
so I check profile manager in 2.0 and it shows a profile named "Default
User2", that's one I had created from the previous install of 2.0 but
when I do a search with Windows search using just the keyword "Default"
it finds every other occurrence of the word default except that one on
any of the four hard drives I have on this computer. This is really
getting confusing I think I might just do like some of the others
have said and stay with 1.1.18 until the next version of Seamonkey comes
out unless it requires me to install 2.0 before I can upgrade to
anything newer and if that happens I might as well switch back to
Eudora, I've had people tell me it just laughs at viruses because it
can't open them and just deletes them.

I think that neither version will work as long as the other is running so you need to make

Try looking at processes in task manager and make sure nothing that says "Seamonkey" is

in a certain location.
The current 1.1.8 - profiles of the windows-users are all located on
their homedrive, lets say h:\seamonkeyprofile, because they use a
special registry.dat in their %appdata%\mozilla.

This makes it easy to generate a preconfigured profile for new users.

Does anybody know to force seamonkey 2 to create the new migrated
profile on a preconfigured location?

I tried to edit profiles.ini and the \greprefs\all.js in the
programmfolder but whithout success.

Another question: What does seamonkey check before starting the
migration? Why does the cmdlineargument "-migrate" not always start the
migration?

all.js Line 969 ff:
pref("profile.confirm_automigration",true);
// profile.migration_behavior determines how the profiles root is set
// 0 - use NS_APP_USER_PROFILES_ROOT_DIR
// 1 - create one based on the NS4.x profile root
// 2 - use, if not empty, profile.migration_directory otherwise same as 0
pref("profile.migration_behavior",0);
pref("profile.migration_directory", "");

Thanks for tips or useful links,
Gerd

Win XP copy function

2009-11-03 Thread nickfruscello
Hello,

Recently, I downloaded Seamonkey 2.0 RC and noticed that the copy
function does not work. I tried Ctrl+C, choosing Edit and then copy,
right click copy and none of them worked. I uninstalled the browser
completely, reinstalled it with the current 2.0 version on the front
page and I'm still having this problem. I'm using Windows XP
professional service pack 3. Interestingly enough, I have Windows
Vista at home and the copy paste function works fine. I installed
Seamonkey fresh on another Windows XP machine and it had the same
problem. Is this a problem with XP?

Thank you
Horst

0. Exit SeaMonkey and Google Desktop Search
1. Open up "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search"
2. Open up "C:\Program Files\Mozilla.org\Seamonkey\components"
3. Copy GoogleDesktopMozilla.dll, GoogleDesktopMozillaStub.js, and
GoogleDesktopMozillaStub.xpt from #1 to #2
4. Run cmd.exe
5. Type: cd "C:\Program Files\Mozilla.org\Seamonkey\components"
6. Type: ..\regxpcom
7. Restart SeaMonkey

OK, if no one knows the answer to this, can anyone tell us if there is a
"desktop search" application that does work with both the browser and
e-mail functions of Seamonkey 2.0?

Thanx,

Mail issues with version 2.0 installation

2009-11-03 Thread Marisa Ciceran
I have been a faithful user of SeaMonkey and all its predecessors going
back to the early 1990s. Currently, I have version 1.1.18 installed on
my system and two days ago I downloaded and installed version 2 -
immediately running into an unexpected and totally avoidable problem.

I expected the installation to follow the usual procedure of deleting
the prior working version and overriding the desktop icons, as in prior
upgrades. It did not do so, thereby causing a conflict with incoming
mails which arrived in version 2.0 on the first session right after
installation, then yo version 1.1.18 on the next and subsequent openings
of SeaMonkey Mail, leaving me with mails to be transferred over. I have
not yet fully recovered from this unwarranted problem which an
instruction/warning during the installation and/or during "import" phase
of the installation 2.0 would have prevented, and so would have new
icons on the desktop.

I have one other smaller, but significant problem. While I have not had
much time yet to investigate what has changed besides that some add-ons
no longer work and the look of the icons and smileys is different (the
new smileys are awful!), I did notice right away that the mails status
bar no longer shows that the program is downloading incoming mails. Can
anyone tell me whether that feature will be brought back? I am not a
FireFox/Thunderbird user (I dislike and uninstalled Firefox), and the
loss of this feature may force me to scrap SeaMonkey 2.0 to go back to
1.1.18.

Thank you,

Marisa

Can't get profile to Seamonkey2.0

2009-11-03 Thread William Morrison
Ok, here's the deal. I'm running XP SP3 have a good working
Seamonkey1.1.18 but can't get it's profile to migrate to 2.0 I've
followed all the instructions but still no good. I've got my bookmarks
moved over but can't import my mail settings, every time I try to import
my mail 2.0 only gives me the option to move mail from Thunderbird which
I've never had. I've tried the command line approach of -P and
-migration but neither have helped. I've never had this much trouble
setting up a program before wasn't there some way for the project to
just have 2.0 do this itself like 1.1.18 and all previous upgrades did.
This is getting frustrating I like Mozilla and have been using their
products since Netscape 4.0 and used it right up until, what was it 8.0
turn it into IE, which sucked, but this is ridiculous. It's just a
single user computer so this should be this hard!!!

Yes and no. Not exactly but changed very very much. Just click in a form
field twice or start typing, it will offer all possibilities which were
previously entered then.

Yes. Portable software don't care much about which version of Windows
you are using -- some of them might work even on Windows 9x. As long as
the computer fulfills the minimum system requirements of the software,
you should be fine -- for SM2, that would be Windows 2000. So you should
be fine using Portable SM2 in Win2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 or 7.

On this machine, yes; on the work machine, no. Since I am the sole user
on both machines (both on Win XP) and do not keep anything personal
(banking, financial, medical, etc) or embarrassing (porn, etc), on
either machine I have no need for any local passwords of any type except
those needed for accessing mail, newsgroups, and sites like Yahoo.
SpamCop, etc.

Download Manager always logs downloaded files: why ?

2009-11-03 Thread Gabriele

Hello,

why does the Download Manager always keep a list of downloaded files, even
if I set to "remove when they have completed" ?

Better, I dont' use the DL manager at all, my configuration is:
- open a progress window
- always ask me where to save
- remove downloads when they have completed

So I think there should be no trace at all of my downloaded files in the
download manager...
