Re: [OSM-talk-be] Old topographic maps
In 2010, we mapped a lot of boundaries using out-of-copyright maps. Though the maps we used were a lot older (mainly Ferraris maps). Today, there are still boundaries of the part-municipalities we could map using old maps like these. In my experience, a high-quality scan is the most valuable. Although mass-georeferencing them can be nice, we only did it on an individual base when mapping the boundaries (by using the background-image plugin for JOSM). Mainly because those old maps weren't drawn very correctly, we had to adapt the georeferencing based on the actual position where we were working. I have a feeling it won't be a lot better with pre-WWII maps. High-quality scans wouldn't cost that much effort with a professional scanner. Maybe it would be good to upload them to commons (so they can be used in Wikipedia) or on the OSM wiki. I think the most work will be to classify them, so they are searchable. Anyway, I think it would be nice, but I don't know how useful it would be, so I understand if you don't want to do it. Re: [OSM-talk-be] Destination tagging on motorways
Just FYI - in the U.S. we have been moving from the (deprecated) exit_to= on the motorway_junction node to tagging the destinations on the _link ways using destination= and destination:ref=. For the exit numbers, we keep it simple and use ref= on the motorway_junction node. This is also what the Scout app supports for the US (even though it also looks at exit_to= because there is still so many of those left). Note that this is just for the exits, not for the main roadways. See also my diary entry at http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/mvexel/diary/22419 The wiki has a lot of partially contradictory tagging proposals, but I feel that the combination of destination / destination:ref on the _link and ref on the motorway_junction node is the simplest convention that covers all bases. Did you end up with a 'definitive' way of doing it in Belgium / NL yet? Have you looked at common practice in surrounding countries? Re: [OSM-talk-be] Old topographic maps
Hi Sander, Obviously I don't have a professional scanner. But don't underestimate the work. I think that three minutes per map would be rather ambitious. The list contains more than 300 maps. A quick and probably optimistic estimate is 1000 minutes or 17 hours of work just for the scanning. While you are at it, including maps that will get out of copyright in a few years might sound like a plan. Depending on where you put the cutoff that could add another 100 (only 40's) to 300 (if also including a good part of the 50's) maps that I have. Anyhow, count on easily a week of work. You are right, I don't want to invest that time in something that might eventually maybe be useful myself. I'd rather get out and map one of the many remaining white spots on the OSM map in Belgium. You can't compare the quality of 20th century maps with the 18th century Ferraris map. Most of the cartographic know how dates from the 19th century. I even don't think that Ferraris has a well defined projection, while those topographic maps are a Bonne projection on the Delambre ellipsoid. I assume that projection even has an EPSG code. Also, from 1928 on the ICM (Institut Cartographique Militaire) started working based on a denser triangulation. The precision is not like modern maps, but certainly as good as the OSM precision. wouter On Thu, Sep 25, 2014 at 11:24 AM, Sander Deryckere sander...@gmail.com wrote: In 2010, we mapped a lot of boundaries using out-of-copyright maps. You don't need to own a professional scanner, there are lots of copy centres that offer digitizing paper. The prize to scan 300 to 600 pages would depend a lot on the page size and quality I guess. If the paper quality is still good, some of those professional scanners work completely automatic. The cost could be shared to make it less expensive. Then you're left with a bunch of big files that could be bulk uploaded for later, crowd-sourced classification. You can't compare the quality of 20th century maps with the 18th century Ferraris map. Those did have a projection, and were mostly correct, though still very often had mistakes in their projection (mainly because lack of better tools). I also recently worked with American army maps from 1955 of West Africa. Of course they didn't have the time to do everything correctly for such an area, but they did have more means after WWII (like cheaper aerial pictures), but the maps still had many projection mistakes. I guess, to decide whether it's worth the effort or not, you could post a picture of how detailed the maps are, and probably also try to estimate the scanning prize when done in a copyshop. [OSM-talk] Proposed changes to landcover labelling in openstreetmap-carto
Dear all, We are currently working on changes in the rendering of landcover labels in openstreetmap-carto, the rendering that is used for the default map on www.openstreetmap.org. Before we roll out these changes, we would like to ask you for your feedback. A demo which allows you to compare the old and new rendering can be found here: http://tile.paulnorman.ca/demo/landcover-labels.html. We currently only have some areas in Northern America loaded on the demo server. Changes to the rendering include: - All rendered landcover tags now have their name rendered. - The minimum zoom level of labels is now defined based on the rendered size of the area - Font size now also depends on the rendered size - Landuse labels are now rendered oblique, to easier visually tell them apart from village and POI labels. - All labels are rendered in a colour similar to the landuse they belong to. More details can be found on Github: https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/pull/941. We look forward to hear your opinion on the changes. Re: [talk-au] Data for OSM + talk at UNSW
Hi Mike, I presented a talk at MLUG (Melbourne Linux User Group) 3 years ago about OSM, it was very well received back then. I used a presentation template that was given to me around 4 (or 5?) years ago from another fellow OSM contributor in Australia (sorry, can't remember his name). Anyway, if you want to use it and improve it by all means, it is rather old (pre odbl licence change, when OSM was still cc-by). You can grab it all here: http://rhubarb.us.to/osm_presentation/ (119MB) - it'll be a little slow to download. University of Western Sydney - Campbelltown was originally mapped out by myself a few years ago, and since then has been refreshed with much more accurate data (possibly from their cartography / GIS / property department, not sure). With all the building numbers it'll help new students and visitors find where they need to go without trying to find notice boards. See here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/-34.0708/150.7878 Lastly, if you want to show off an example of flashy 3D OSM, show them this: http://demo.f4map.com/#lat=-37.8164876lon=144.9644073zoom=16camera.theta=61.379camera.phi=19.194 - But it is possible to import OSM into supertuxkart, and flightgear (free flight simulator) as well. Was tun? -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/Presentazione-OSM-a-Linux-Day-a-Orvieto-tp5818453.html Sent from the Italy General mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Re: [Talk-it] Presentazione OSM a Linux Day a Orvieto
IT:Quality_assurance [3]http://tools.geofabrik.de/mc - Ciao, Aury -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/Presentazione-OSM-a-Linux-Day-a-Orvieto-tp5818453p5818460.html Sent from the Italy General mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Un peu d'anglais *Motorway service areas* *Besides its use for on/off ramps, motorway_link is also used for the slip roads/ramps into and out of motorway service areas/rest areas. In this case the motorway_link should go from the motorway towards the services as far as motorway regulations (for example no pedestrians) apply. In the UK, this is indicated by a sign.
These are based off of Lambertus's work here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl If you have questions or comments about these maps, please feel free to ask. However, please do not send me private mail. The odds are, someone else will have the same questions, and by asking on the talk-us@ list, others can benefit. I wrote scripts to joined them myself to lessen the impact of doing a large join on Lambertus's server. I've also cut them in large longitude swaths that should fit conveniently on removable media. http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2014-09-23 Can or should I seed the torrents? Yes!! If you use the .torrent files, please seed. That web server is in the UK, and it helps to have some peers on this side of the Atlantic. Why is my map missing small rectangular areas? There have been some missing tiles from Lambertus's map (the red rectangles), I don't see any at the moment, so you may want to update if you had issues with the last set. Why can I not copy the large files to my new SD card? If you buy a new card (especially SDHC), some are FAT16 from the factory. I had to reformat it to let me create a 2GB file. Does your map cover Mexico/Canada? Yes!! I have, for the purposes of this map, annexed Ontario in to the USA. Some areas of North America that are close to the US also just happen to get pulled in to these maps. This might not happen forever, and if you would like your non-US area to get included, let me know. -- Dave ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] multiple-value problem in ref tags
I would have to agree with Paul on this subject Jack. It's been common practice to do it this way since I've been a part of the OSM editing community in 2010. Since the 'ref' tags aren't normal sentences, the ';' isn't considered to be punctuation like Paul mentioned in his e-mail. I honestly don't know why your copy of OSMAnd and the TTS engine it uses say ';' when giving you the refs off of highway. [1] But your comment about 'tagging for the renderer' when breaking the MapQuest Open rendering could be turned back and say that we shouldn't be 'tagging for the router' at the same time. MapQuest developed their rendering scheme on how we were using the ref tags already. Thus, this isn't technically 'tagging for the renderer' because we were already not using a space after the ';' in the ref tags. -James [1] - https://groups.google.com/d/topic/osmand/k2Rf59wUiSE/discussion Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2014 20:31:43 -0700 From: penor...@mac.com To: talk-us@openstreetmap.org Subject: Re: [Talk-us] multiple-value problem in ref tags On 9/15/2014 7:03 PM, Jack Burke wrote: As the wiki doesn't specifically say *don't* put a space after the semicolon, I didn't see a problem with doing it. The semicolon should never make it to the TTS engine, the processing before it gets that far should transform it into something that can be spoken. Remember, the ; isn't being used as punctuation, it's being used as a delimiter. The quote you pasted said with a semicolon and without a space character, which agrees with this. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

With these split relations, ways should have forward/backwards, relations should have cardinal directions in a super relation. A good example would be a good chunk of I-75 [1], I-96, M-3, M-10 in Metro Detroit. But he's done it elsewhere in Michigan. I sent him a PM earlier mentioning this as a 'FYI' that we don't add the '-' to the ref tags. Hopefully he'll respond. Otherwise, this might be a massive cleanup. Anybody else want to try and get a hold of this user as well?
