I did see that he had passed away mentioned on a Facebook page a while back. I was so sorry to hear of it. I do remember him participating here in the past. [TMIC] End of birthday lists
Hello all, Some of you may remember how the birthday lists started many years ago. Someone found an online site that would send e-cards to others as a support for a charity, so many of us sent in our names and birthdays so as to use the site to raise funds for the TMA. Not surprisingly, the site died after a while. A girl on the TMIC named Carrie and I had accumulated the birthday names and lists, and after she left the list, I continued to send them out once a month. I've decided to stop doing so, for a number of reasons. 1) Not many people are here any more. Many are on Facebook and it is easy to send birthday greetings there. 2) I don't think many (if any) people use the birthday list to send individual greetings to anyone on it. (A few of you have faithfully sent happy birthdays on TMIC to those celebrating each month as a whole, and I have appreciated that.) 3) Since all mail that goes through the TMIC is archived online, I have wondered if it is a problem to have lists of names and e-mails there, if that increases anyone's spam content. 4) I have been sending out individual birthday greetings to everyone on the list, and more and more of them are returned to me because the address is no longer active. 5) For those who are no longer on the TMIC, I don't know if they welcome the birthday greetings or if they don't want me to bug them any more. So for all of those reasons, plus the amount of time involved, I have decided to stop sending the birthday lists out each month. I've just finished updating it with the latest information I have - if anyone else wants to take it over, I'll be happy to send you the list. I'm still here on the TMIC and plan to continue to be. I wish all of you a very happy and healthy 2014. Love, Barbara H.

Re: [TMIC] RE: Books Movies
If you look people up on Goodreads.com, you can peruse what they've been reading. One of my recent favorites is Unbroken by Lauren Hillenbrand. Also the Mitford series by Jan Karon (At Home in Mitford is the first). My kids are big into the Marvel comics films, so we've enjoyed the Iron Man films, The Avengers, Captain America, etc. They have a lot of classic English love stories on Netflix: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Wives and Daughters, Emma, North and South (the British one based on the book by Elizabeth Gaskell, not the one based in America. The book was great as well). I don't watch or read many mysteries, but we have watched many TV shows that are based on Mysteries: Castle, Chuck, White Collar. They have those on Netflix as well, possibly on Hulu too. Barbara H. Hi Janice, Mine did not start out with severe pain. It started with a hard to define, numb but not totally numb feeling in my left arm which then spread to my legs. It progressed to pretty painful banding around the affected arm, like a too-tight blood pressure cuff. That gradually went away. The only pain I have now is occasional muscle spasms in my back. Eastern Daylight Time Subj: The Yellow Shirt (don't delete) A wonderful story! *Subject:* *Fwd: The Yellow Shirt (don't delete)* *Wonderful Story!* The yellow shirt had long sleeves, four extra-large pockets trimmed in black thread and snaps up the front. It was faded from years of wear, but still in decent shape. I found it in 1963 when I was home from college on Christmas break, rummaging through bags of clothes Mom intended to give away. 'You're not taking that old thing, are you?' Mom said when she saw me packing the yellow shirt. 'I wore that when I was pregnant with your brother in 1954!' 'It's just the thing to wear over my clothes during art class, Mom. Thanks!' I slipped it into my suitcase before she could object. The yellow shirt be came a part of my college wardrobe. I loved it. After graduation, I wore the shirt the day I moved into my new apartment and on Saturday mornings when I cleaned. The next year, I married. When I became pregnant, I wore the yellow shirt during big-belly days. I missed Mom and the rest of my family, since we were in Colorado and they were in Illinois .. But, that shirt helped. I smiled, remembering that Mother had worn it when she was pregnant, 25 years earlier. That Christmas, mindful of the warm feelings the shirt had given me, I patched one elbow, wrapped it in holiday paper and sent it to Mom. When Mom wrote to thank me for her 'real' gifts, she said the yellow shirt was lovely. She never mentioned it again.. The next year, my husband, daughter and I stopped at Mom and Dad's to pick up some furniture. Days later, when we uncrated the kitchen table, I noticed something yellow taped to its bottom. The shirt! And so the pattern was set. On our next visit home, I secretly placed the shirt under Mom and Dad's mattress I don't know how long it took for her to find it, but almost two years passed before I discovered it under the base of our living-room floor lamp. The yellow shirt was just what I needed now while refinishing furniture. The walnut stains added character. In 1975 my husband and I divorced. With my three children, I prepared to move back to Illinois ... As I packed, a deep depression overtook me. I wondered if I could make it on my own. I wondered if I would ind a job. I paged through the Bible, looking for comfort. In Ephesians, I read, 'So use every piece of God's armour to resist the enemy whenever he attacks, and when it is all over, you will be standing up.' I tried to picture myself wearing God's armour, but all I saw was the stained yellow shirt.. Slowly, it dawned on me.. Wasn't my mother's love a piece of God's armour? My courage was renewed. Unpacking in our new home, I knew I had to get the shirt back to Mother. The next time I visited her, I tucked it in her bottom dresser drawer Meanwhile, I found a good job at a radio station. A year later I discovered the yellow shirt hidden in a rag bag in my cleaning closet. Something new had been added. Embroidered in bright green across the breast pocket were the words 'I BELONG TO PAT.' Not to be outdone, I got out my own embroidery materials and added an apostrophe and seven more letters. Now the shirt proudly proclaimed, 'I BELONG TO PAT'S MOTHER.' But I didn't stop there. I zig-zagged all the frayed seams, then had a friend mail the shirt in a fancy box to Mom from Arlington , VA. We enclosed an official looking letter from 'The Institute for the Destitute,' announcing that she was the recipient of an award for good deeds.. I would have given anything to see Mom's face when she opened the box. But, of course, she never mentioned it.. Two years later, in 1978, I remarried. The day of our wedding, Harold and I put our

Eddy was just a few steps behind me but couldn’t get to me in time to stop the fall. Anyway, I fell right on my face – huge bump immediately. The ER gave me an IV to put in meds for pain (!!!) and nausea. That helped quite a bit. Then they did a cat scan and found I had no broken bones. Doc’s were shocked, but pleased. I really do have a hard head! They then sent us back home and I have been very quiet ever since. Doc’s think I may have had vertigo. I look a lot like a raccoon - eyes really black and purple and forehead and bridge of nose really swollen. I am a mess, but relatively little pain for having such a concussion. Each day we are checking out the changes in shape and color in my face. Just thought I would keep you guys up with my adventures. It is because of their negligence that we may not get any more emails. This list has been around for at least 12 years and I don't know how long before I signed on that it had been up and running. I know the Quad list is going to another site, but I haven't heard anything about us. Does anyone else know anything about this? If you do will you please let me know. I'm very worried about it. I know that the list doesn't function the way that it used to but it is still important to me that we all stay in touch. Oh, do any of you have the list of May Birthdays? It usually comes around before the 1st and I haven't seen it yet for this month. What do you think we should do? That is maddeningly ridiculous and sounds more like the idea of karma. Job was afflicted even though God Himself said he had done nothing wrong. Re: [TMIC] neurologist
I think we do so by praying as we read, for God to help us understand, then by reading verses in context rather than stringing isolated verses together. The church I went to as a teenager strongly advocated reading the Bible through, and that has been the biggest help to me. There are seeming opposites in the Bible that hold each other in balance, and a lot of error comes in when people tip one way or the other. Barbara H. Re: [TMIC] neurologist
I think it depends on one's needs. I've had TM for 17 years and haven't seen a neurologist in about 14 years. I got to an acceptable plateau (can walk and pretty well function as a homemaker and volunteer, have some issues with fatigue, balance, and muscle spasms. I don't think I could hold down a job for various reasons, but I've been able to raise my children, keep my home, and help out in various areas at church and my kids' schools). I am not on any TM-related medications, so when we moved to another state, I didn't seek out a new neuro. It helped that my PCP was knowledgeable about TM and willing to refer me to anyone I wanted to see -- it was through him I was referred to a urologist for problems in that realm. If I had problems that only a neuro could help with or was on certain medications that it would be best for him to monitor, I'd see one, and I'd encourage anyone with any of those needs to keep seeing one, but otherwise there is no need to see him every year just to hear that everything is the same, which is about where we were when I last saw him. Of course, if new problems or questions crop up, I wouldn't hesitate to seek one out. Barbara H. http://barbarah.wordpress.com On Thu, Jan 17, 2013 at 11:21 AM, Robert Pall robthe...@aol.com wrote: I disagree with all of you who are saying that you have either stopped going to a neurologist or see one very infrequently. I saw Dr Kerr at John Hopkins for the first 10 years after coming down with TM. I go to my neurologist at least once per year to insure that my meds are the best they can be. New Medications and procedures happen all of the timeby seeing a neuro I assure myself that I am getting the best treatment possible. Just last week I changed to a new neurologist, Douglas Holland in West Long Branch NJ. Not only did he prescribe medical marijuana for me he also set up a test to inject baclofin directly into my spine and see over a period of 4 hours if it makes a noticeable improvement. If it does we may consider the baclofin pumpif it does not we will explore other options to help me better cope with my pain and discomfort. I head up the New Jersey TM support group. The main benefit of a support group is comparing doctors and medicines that others are seeing or taking and perhaps get some new ideas regarding treatment. At our last 2 meetings we had as a guest speaker the head of physical therapy who gave us many ideas of simple things we could do in our own homes to exercise as well as hospital treatments that could prove beneficial. I have had TM for over 15 yearsand I have fought this condition every single day. I cannot walk very wellbut I have learned that I can swim pretty good. I now swim one mile a day..and even if this is doing nothing for my TM it is at least giving me a great cardio workout. Finally I purchased a Golden Retriever..this 60lb dog forces me to walk at lease 1 hour every day. Start living or start dying! All the best! Rob in NJ

Still here! :-) It seems like the list here goes pretty quiet for several days in a row and then will have a flurry of mail for a few days. [TMIC] Exercising with limited mobility
I saw this link today and thought some of you might be interested. I've been reading SparkPeople.com for a while now and getting their daily e-mails, and one recent one had this link to exercises for those with limited mobility: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/lifestyle_center_detail.asp?id=19 I haven't looked into it much more than a quick perusal yet, but I was interested because when I've tried different workout DVDs or systems, I've haven't found any that I can do all of (I can walk but can't run, am wobbly, have balance problems, and my knees and ankles give out). I've found a couple of walking DVDs that are helpful (that show different stretches and steps to break up the monotony) and can do some of the exercises on the Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout for the Kinect game system, but at several points have to adapt somehow because I can't follow the routine at points. I was exercising regularly for the first time in ages last year but injured my back just before Thanksgiving, and haven't gotten back into a routine. That's one thing I discovered: exercising helped some muscles immensely but also seemed to set off muscle spasms in my back. It also helped increased stamina and energy levels, so I need to get back into it and find exercises I can do. Anyway -- I want to look into these more but thought I'd go ahead and pass them along. I would echo what others have said about seeing a neurologist to let him know whatever meds he is on aren't helping with the pain. It may lessen over time -- for me pain was only an occasional thing, not constant, but after 16+ years it's not a regular problem any more. Physical therapy helped me immensely with movement and balance -- I don't know if help in those areas would help with pain as well. I mainly just wanted to encourage you not to take his anger personally. Different people react differently to TM, and anger can be a stage of grief in adjusting to what he has lost. Should he take it out on you? No, and hopefully some day soon he will see that. But you are the closest person to him and the one with whom he can most easily let down his guard, so you tend to be the recipient. We're here for you -- whether you have questions or just need to vent. He says that I am no help and do not understand what he is going through. This is correct. I do not understand. Because he looks normal, it is easy to forget that he is in constant pain. This is why I went online to see if I can find a group that does understand and can possibly provide hope for him. He has had the symptoms for almost 6 months and every day plays like a broken record. I ask every day how he is and he unleashes a long list of painful symptoms. Besides taking his meds, is there any other therapy I can arrange for him that may provide relief? I feel useless. He is angry that I am not doing more, but I do not know what I can do besides taking care of the home and kids without burdening him with additional tasks. ** ** Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Re: [TMIC] gone to facebook
I'm still here, too. I don't comment as much -- if someone else has already said what I might have said, then I don't usually chime in. The TMIC as a whole is not nearly as active as it was when I first joined back some...oh, 14-15 years ago. I'm coming up on my 16th anniversary with TM on Sept. 1. I think one reason is that there is a lot of information available online now, and that's a good thing. When I first contracted TM, I didn't have a computer, and the local library had a two-page spread in one medical book, and that was it. TM was the first thing I searched for when we did get a computer, and this group was the first concrete link I found. It was a godsend, really, to have somewhere to post questions and compare notes. But now that so much more information is online, people may be getting their questions answered in their own research. And I think, too, for some of us who have been here a while, we've gotten our basic questions answered (even if the answer in some cases is that there is no known answer), so there's not as much to talk about. The main reason I stay on now is to be of help if anyone else has a question or just needs some empathy and support. Too, as Roger said, some have gone on to other means of communication now. I think the TM message board or bulletin board was pretty active for a while, and now Facebook is where many people go to interact online. I was in the group there for a while, but left -- the 50+ messages Bobby Jim referred to were just too much for me. When I first came online, TMIC was about the only thing I did online besides an occasional e-mail to family who had e-mail. But now nearly everybody has e-mail, many friends are on Facebook, I've found several blogs I read as well as news and entertainment -- now I have to be careful not to let computer time eat up too much of my day. And I don't know, but I think that may be the biggest reason some folks aren't as active. When I send out birthday greetings, if an e-mail bounces back to me, I'll make a note of it so I don't post that non-working e-mail again next time, but I don't delete the name in case they come back. It is sad every month to see that there are almost as many inactive names there as there are active now. I miss hearing from some of those folks and wonder how they are. But I truly think as long as there is a TMIC, there will be some of us here. We just need to wave every now and then. :-) Barbara H. http://barbarah.wordpress.com

Re: [TMIC] Re: MOM
There is such a thing as recurrent transverse myelitis: the Johns Hopkins site describes it as the presence of more than one episode meeting the criteria for TM with intervening improvement and excluding the presence of multiple sclerosis. More than half of these recurrent cases have an unknown cause. ( http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/neurology_neurosurgery/specialty_areas/transverse_myelitis/about-tm/recurrent-tm.html). But that may not be what is going on here, either. I don't know if TM affects CO2 level -- unless it's affecting her diaphragm and therefore her breathing. Hopefully they'll be able to figure out what's wrong. BTW, Tracy, all you have to do to send a message to the group is to send it to tmic-list@eskimo.com. I'll be praying for you, I know others are as well. Barbara H. On Fri, Jun 17, 2011 at 4:24 PM, Jeron Rampersad rumc...@hotmail.comwrote: Hi guys, Sorry I have been away for so long. I've been through hell since January 1st this year with my complications with TM. I started having really bad spasms then and I just thought they were normal, but here was our little friend TM acting up again through an infection I managed to pick up in Brazil. I was treated and got better and my wife and I were relocated to the Caribbean, where we are from, by her company just after that. We moved and things settled nicely for a while, but with TM a while is all you have. I got another attack. I've been hospitalised on 7 separate occasions since then just to deal with pain, because sadly neurology is not a practised science in the caribbean. My wife endured all the while at my side. At least she did for a while. She finally got fed up of it all, seeing me spasm out of control in loads of pain must have been hard. She left me in mid April and I have been trying to cope since, but it's really hard. I love my wife and hate that I put her through so much, but I never thought she would have left. We haven't spoken in a month now and I have medical bills piling up and it's getting scary now. I just need to catch a break. It's more challenging now than when I was first hit by TM, because for the first time in my life I'm truly alone. I know my faith is being tested; I wish I knew what God wanted from me. I need you guys. Jeron

Re: [TMIC] tornado concern
I just cannot imagine what that kind of devastation is like. In our house in eastern TN it was very tense listening to the storm and waiting through the hours of the tornado warnings and watches. The power wobbled a couple of times but thankfully never went out. But I can only imagine whatever feeling we had were multiplied exponentially by those who were actually hit by the tornadoes. My heart goes out to them, and I'll be praying, Randy. In Rainsville close to 40 (39 I think) and people are still missing. Near my homeplace many lost everything. It was 1/2 to a mile wide and at times bigger. There is still no power or water in many areas. Entire forests are gone - it often took the trees. In some places it pulled the grass out of the ground and removed the top soil and left a wide long brown barren trail. The REASON for this email is twofold. My cousin Kathy Studdard would NOT leave her cats and go to the shelter. She lost most of her cats anyway. Her house was swept - and I DO mean swept away - like a big brown. The blocks on the foundation were gone and it even removed the porch entirely. She was taken to Atlanta with internal injuries and now we are getting news that is not good and we are afraid that we are going to loose her. I'm not going to say 'prayer' ect and have a few send me multiple emails about what site is for ect. Just send warm thoughts or whatever you feel like doing. Our family is just crushing under this situation. Even if she survives, this gorgeous lady with such awonderful husband and children and solid career is never going to be the same. The power of this torando was so great that it removed a large oak tree with a plus 3 foot wide base and dropped it in a nearby field. It didn't 'knock it over'. It took the ENTIRE tree and set it back down on the other side of the road - ROOTS and all. I got another family that is also in serious need and I will send that in the next email if you are gracious enough to read.

[TMIC] Responding to e-mails
I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers, but it would be really helpful if people would read through the responses to a post before responding. A case in point is the one from Bee Clark -- almost as soon as the first e-mail came through (at least in my inbox), it proved to be a scam and Bee responded herself that her account was hacked and the e-mail was not from her. But now as people log into their accounts they are responding to the first e-mail and telling the rest of the list it is a scam when we know that already and it has been resolved. When you see something like that, go ahead and read the first responses to see if it has been taken care of so the list isn't flooded with many people saying the same thing. I know some people think the list has been too quiet, but I don't think any of us wants to read multiple people saying the same thing over and over for hours or days. Just sharing my two cents. :-) Barbara H. http:barbarah.wordpress.com

Re: [TMIC] antibiotics
I'm so sorry about that! Do you have diabetes? I know that can cause slowness in healing, but I am sure there are other things as well that can affect it. I was on at least a couple of rounds of antibiotics, maybe more, I can't remember, with a stubborn bout of cellulitis a couple of years ago with no problems. Sometimes antibiotics can cause stomach issues - destroying the good bacteria and causing diarrhea, and they advise eating yogurt to combat that, but I did fine without it. Re: [TMIC] REHAB
It sounds like I had a different experience from the rest of you with rehab. After my initial 8-day stay in the hospital while they ran tests and diagnosed TM, my neurologist wanted me to go into a 10-day stay in the rehab unit of the hospital. My insurance wouldn't cover that. I couldn't drive myself to outpatient rehab and my husband had to go back to work, so I had no transportation or help to get there, so they paid for a physical therapist to come to my home 2 or 3 times a week for about three months. It seems to me like that would have cost them more, but I don't know -- probably not as hospital stays are expensive. The girl who came was sweet -- she didn't mind if my kids came in and watched or tried to do the same exercises. She was short and petite and I am tall and...not petite...and I did wonder if she could handle it if I fell. Thankfully we didn't have to find out. She was great -- answered questions and gave me specific exercises for my concerns. I liked being at home because I didn't want to be in the hospital away from the family, and because I felt my adjustments could be tailored to the obstacles I would face in my own home rather than just general instruction in the hospital. I did wonder occasionally if I missed something by not being in rehab at the hospital, but it was out of my hands anyway. My only quibble was that it only lasted until I was able to walk in a stable fashion with a walker. I was thrilled with that, but felt I could have used some more fine-tuning. It never occurred to us at the time that we could try to push for that with the insurance company. But I do believe that physical therapy was the best thing for my recovery, next to prayer and God's grace. Barbara H. http://barbarah.wordpress.com

Rehab didn't work out and Dad took a turn for the worse. We talked to the Dr. on Saturday and he told us that since Dad is taking in little food and refusing most treatment, hospice is the best option. He was moved to hospice this evening at the same facility where he was to do rehab.I'm sure the family would appreciate your prayers during this difficult time. A few times in the very early days of TM I would experience what felt like a jolt in the back of my head. One time it even made me stumble. I was worried it was something in my brain. But over time I figured it was a muscle spasm. If you click on “reply”, the email that you send will NOT go to the person who you believe to be the sender, but it will just go out to an empty (not legitimate) email address. Re: [TMIC] personal problem
Amanda, I have problems along those lines sometimes, too. The thing that helps me most is eating fresh fruits and vegetables -- it has gotten to the point that if I have a day or so that I don't eat them, I can almost count on having trouble. Canned fruits used to help, but they don't any more. I keep grapes and baby carrots on hand as they're the easiest to just rinse and eat, but I also try to eat salads regularly, too.. Also, exercise really helps immensely, but this is a problem for many TMers, especially those who can't walk. Is there someone who can exercise your legs, range of motion exercises and that kind of thing? Hope you get some relief soon. Please let me know. I haven't heard this from anyone else either on or off the list. I think the next computer I buy will be a mac;they don't get spam. Are they legit? I've been getting emails from both of them that have addresses in the body of the letter, but no explanation of what they're about. I have never opened one. I just delete them. In the subject line it says either no subject or [TMIC]. If you look at who else gets it,there are insurance companies, pet care ,etc. Must be one of those that sends to everyone in their address book. Cheryl in Easthampton,MA
