The easiest way is to set up secondary IP address in your Cisco 2501.
I guess your router is Cisco 2503, not 2501, it does not support modular
like cisco 1600, 1700, 2600, 3600 Series, etc.

Generally speaking, different IOS has different feautre.
You need to order IP/IPX feature set for cisco 2650 series at least, IOS is

WIC-2T will works on 1700, 2600, 3600 series but it will never work on 1600
series accroding the following document.

There is no serial interface built in Cisco 2600 series. You need to
purchase separate module.
Smart serial is for WIC-2T. Cisco 2600 also support WIC-IT, DB60.
Expensive than DB60.

1)First I will suggest you that you use log-adjancey-change command.
By apply the command, the router will send a syslog message when
an OSPF neighbor state changes. It can provides a higher level
view of changes to the state of the peer relationship with less output.
