[GNC] Credit Card Accounts Missing

were no credit card accounts listed. Bizarre.  The display was only
Liabilities: Auto Loan.

I am a long time user of GC and have never encountered this before

Re: [GNC] Gnucash via Flatpak-Issues-Solutions

2022-01-18 Thread Les
Hi David: thanks for the reply.  GC via Flatpac is the only issue I
have.  Since some of the problems occurred during upgrades.

As far as upgrading Linux MInt: I did upgrade to a 20:1 awhile back, but
it broke some of my other apps.  So I went back to 19.3.

As an experiment, I have another laptop with LM 19.3.  I installed the
latest GC via Flatpac and DID NOT have any of the issues that I have
experienced on this machine.  Weird to say the least.

Does this have to do with the new version of GC?

neither
works:

https://downloads.sourceforge.net/gnucash/gnucash%20%28stable%29/4.4/

The former results in a 404 error, the later gives me an error

No rush to fix, but thought I should flag this up.

Re: [GNC] Sales Taxes...

2020-12-27 Thread Les
I am not an account so..  However, if you are purchasing items for
resale in Texas, you can obtain a resale certificate from the local
county, which allows you to purchase these items without paying sales
taxes.  You do not state the type of organization you are using for your
business, but it you have formalized it, the certificate is available.

So time ago, I owned vending machines and filed a "d.b.a." in the county
I lived in at the time and obtained my supplies without paying sales
taxes. I then included the "retail sales taxes"in my records.

I do not know if this is still available.

Thanks for the reply Tommy.

I have used the Flatpak version of GC since at least 4.0 on the same

I am running this on a Lenova w541 and just checked the insert key, but
to no effect.  However, there is a "Windows" key and that did remove an
entry.  ???

For what its worth, I have two of these laptops, both running the same

Hi -- has this issue resolved for you? I am using GnuCash 4.2 via

I wondered if somehow you had turned on "Insert Mode" on your keyboard

cause the behavior you described.

I know little about flatpak but maybe try opening a terminal and

flatpak update

Maybe if there's a flatpak configuration issue it will tell you.

Oh and just to be certain -- I assume you have used other GnuCash

transactions, you should know you cannot select the entire transaction
and delete it using the delete key on your keyboard. You can use

Re: [GNC] Price Quotes

An update:  I discovered that Flatpak has upgraded GC to the 4.0
version.  I assume this is the issue.

Would someone point me to the instructions for installing AlphaVantage
on Linux Mint?

Thanks,

[GNC] Price Quotes

2020-07-02 Thread Les
I have been using Yahoo as JSON for well over a year and now, today,
when I tried to download quotes, I received an error indicating  that
AlphaVantage needed to be installed for quotes. It is true that I had
the SSD crash about three weeks ago and reinstalled Linux Mint 19.3
along with GC. via Flatpak.  Since then the only problem I had
downloading prices was HKD.

So, what has changed since yesterday?

Although I have an AlphaVantage API, I haven't used it for a long time.
I think it was when the API was limiting the number of prices.

Any assistance with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [GNC] Price of gold

2020-04-08 Thread Les
I use Kitco.com/markets for my prices of precious metals.  It is as
accurate as one can get.  (The real value of an ounce of gold or silver
is currently controlled by the paper markets.  And of course it is
priced in USD.  It would be more accurate to price USD in grams of gold.
But that will probably never happen in my lifetime.

Re: [GNC] GC 2.6.19 & GC 3.8

Today, when I went to price database to download some closing amounts,
the application hung up and I to force close GC (3.8).  I tried a second
time with the same result.  This is a first for this version of GC.  It
used to happen often on the 2.6.19 version.

I do not know what caused it today; it has been perfect since I
installed it (about a week ago. It would be great if you could just kill
the price database without also killing GC.

Is this a known bug?

I have noticed this, too; I believe it's a screen refresh issue.
I'm trying to replicate it on Ubuntu 19.10 and cannot, so I think
it's an issue with a build based upon Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (which your
Mint probably is). That's the version I use in my office.

Here's what I have noticed -- I click on a transaction and choose
Delete from the toolbar. A confirmation dialog pops up, and I
agree that I want to delete, but the transaction does not
disappear from the register. HOWEVER if I close and reopen the
register, (or maybe if I choose View --> Refresh ?) the
transaction is gone.

I have noticed a few other display issues with GnuCash built for
Ubuntu 18.04. The register colors are strange around the text,
especially noticeably on the date field.

I feel compelled to update this a little bit -- As I said before, I
think things look different on my system now that I've installed
dconf-editor on my Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic" system. I installed it so
I could have a look at the GTK+ inspector and its CSS features. I
haven't adjusted any CSS, but the application installation seems to
have brought in a few other packages, too.

Here's more about using the inspector:
https://blog.gtk.org/2017/04/05/the-gtk-inspector/

After installing dconf-editor, I have not been able to replicate the
deleted transaction refresh issue. Though maybe I just I haven't yet
hit the exact sequence that triggers it. You might try installing
dconf-editor and see if it improves it for you, too. I believe having
it should otherwise be benign.

ONE ADDITIONAL strange thing, however...

Sometimes I want to enter data from my laptop into a GnuCash file
that's on my office computer, so I open GnuCash using ssh:

$ ssh -X user@host gnucash /path/to/datafile.gnucash

I was surprised to see the GnuCash windows on my laptop (running
Ubuntu 19.10) look good, even though the application is running from
the desktop system (running Ubuntu 18.04). I naively expected it to
have the same display issue around highlighted text. (Specifically:
when text is being edited, the text is surrounded by a rounded
rectangle with a thin border and a white background.)

SO I just spent (entirely too many) minutes testing some scenarios...

At this moment I am preparing a new CPU for my office running Ubuntu
18.04, so I decided to try the same task connecting from a newly
installed Ubuntu 18.04 client to the old Ubuntu 18.04 host.

Ubuntu 18.04 client, ordinary Ubuntu desktop: I found that the strange
coloration around highlighted fields is still present when the client
is an "ordinary" Ubuntu 18.04 desktop.

Ubuntu 18.04 client, running Wayland: The coloration has the same
problem as regular Ubuntu. (However the SSH windows are quite sluggish.)

Ubuntu 18.04 client, MATE desktop: The coloration around highlighted
text looks much better.

I just went back to the old desktop and opened the gnome-tweaks tool
and played with some themes... the default Ubuntu application theme is
"Ambiance," and I see the text edit problem with both Ambiance AND
Radiance, but the text looks more consistent when some of the other
themes. So there MIGHT be a weird Gnome theme issue with GnuCash built
under Ubuntu 18.04. As I suggested, the default theme in Ubuntu MATE
seems to work better.

I think I've tinkered enough with this for now. Maybe someone who
understands Gnome themes better will suggest something easier to
implement.

P.S.: The next Ubuntu LTS release is scheduled for April, so the
updated libraries should filter to distros like Mint by this summer
sometime.

Unfortunately I also noticed that the spacing of items on the register
changed slightly when I installed the GTK Inspector (as was discussed
on this list a few days ago in reference to CSS issues). I say
"unfortunately" because I believe it was the act of installing the
libraries and other components of the development tools that subtly
changed the way the application appears, which I presume might make it
harder to fix.

I glanced through the bug reports in bugzilla and didn't see one but
maybe I missed it.

You will need to maintain separate data files(e.g. give them separate names
identifying the version they run with) for each version as there were some
data file changes going from 2.6.x to 3.x which prevent a 3.x file working
with a 2.6.x version. I think Geert mentioned them in a post in the last
week or so.

Both versions will also store their configuration files in different
locations in your home directory see
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations. This is possibly a
bonus but changes to things like saved reports in one won't of course carry
through to the other.

You should be able to run instances of both at the same time if you want to.
Just label the launchers in your menu system clearly with the version number
as well.

Thanks David.

I made a different account file for the 3.8 version naming it 3.8.  I
kept the original account file with the same description.

My goal is to run both, one at a time, for about a week to verify the
totals for each major account remain the same.  Assuming that there are
no major problems, I will stop using the 2.6 version.

Just label the launchers in your menu system clearly with the version number
as well.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Actions>Stock Split Add 325 shares and book a "cash in lieu" for the
C$16.75.

Les,

What I do in that case is modify the transaction after running the Stock Split
Assistant to credit the old stock account 500 shares and change the 325 debit
to 825 in the new stock account. You could of course create the same
transaction manually:

Old Stock -500
New Stock 825
Cash Account 16.75
Cap Gains Income 16.75

Start it in the Old Stock account and be sure that the price column is blank in
all 4 splits.

Note that this treatment depends on the merger not being taxable to the shareholders. That's true
in nearly all cases, but a prominent one in the works now that isn't is United Technology's merger
with Raytheon. If it's a taxable merger you need to record a regular sell of the 500 shares of
"old stock" and a buy of the 800 shares of "new stock". The C$16.75 gets tacked
on to the sell transaction. You should have gotten a letter from the company indicating the price
to use for each transaction. If you didn't you can use the closing price of each on the last
trading day before the merger consummated. (Note that I'm not a licensed accountant, financial
advisor, or tax advisor and that you should consult with licensed professionals to be sure that
what I've suggested complies with tax law in your jurisdiction.)

Re: [GNC] Options Trading

2019-06-11 Thread Les

Hi Alton:

Thanks a lot for your suggestions.  I will incorporate them in my
options trades.

Les

On 6/11/19 7:45 AM, Alton Brantley wrote:
As you know, options are quoted in “contracts” of 100 shares (a lot),
but the prices are quoted on a “per share” amount, I simply multiple
the number of contracts by 100 for the quantity of shares value and
the quote for the price.

So, on an opening transaction of a “Buy to Open”, you credit the total
price, and debit the commission  to a subaccount named “Open
Commissions”  and debit the quantity and price (=cost) to the option
account.
On the closing transaction (“Sell  to Close”), you debit the
commission and credit the option account.
Then, do an Action->View Lots in the option account and match up the
options, which will give you a “Realized Gain/Loss” in the option
account. The realized gain/loss transaction is edited to add credit
splits for the opening and closing commissions to give you your next
transaction gain/loss(to match your brokerage statement).

On a short transaction (Sell to Open), the credit and debits are
reversed for the cash account and the option account, but the
commissions are still debited on the open and close, and credited on
the Realized gain/loss reconciliation.

Hope this helps.

[GNC] AlphaVantage

2019-01-07 Thread Les
Over the weekend, I upgraded Linux Mint from 18.2 to 19.1.  With the
upgrade, GC upgraded from 2.6.17 to 2.6.21.

After updating prices, I no longer was obtaining any quotes for
currencies.  If I remember correctly, currencies are being served by
AlphaVantage.  I guess that the configuration of AlphaVantage did not
follow the upgrade.

Questions:  Does GC 2.6.21 have a location in the Preferences or is that
only for the 3.0 version?

If I need to configure AlphaVantage manually, can someone point me to
the instructions for this?

Thanks,

Les

Was that from the package manager? I'd love to have the latest 2.6

A little research shows that Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu with these
relationships (loosely to debian):

Mint <- Ubuntu <- Debian

19.1 Tessa <- 18.04 Bionic <- 10 buster

19 Tara <- 18.04 Bionic <- 10 buster

18.3 Sylvia <- 16.04 Xenial <- 9 stretch

18.2 Sonya <- 16.04 Xenial  <- 9 stretch

18.1 Serena <- 16.04 Xenial <- 9 stretch

17.3 Rosa <- 14.04 Trusty <- 8 jessie

17.2 Rafaela <- 14.04 Trusty <- 8 jessie

17.1 Rebecca <- 14.04 Trusty <- 8 jessie

17 Qiana <- 14.04 Trusty <- 8 jessie

So, I'd say you need to be on Tara or Tessa to have any hope.  You might
need to look at the Ubuntu dependencies and see if you need newer ones
on Mint.

There shouldn't be any danger trying it, though obviously backup your
data files first. I uninstalled the standard version, ran apt-get
autoremove, then downloaded the deb and installed it. You can always
remove it again and install the repository version again if there are
problems. If the install fails or it complains about missing packages
or such like come back and ask. If it says it is going to remove
packages when you try to install the deb then ask first.

Are you saying the totals do not appear in the accounts screen, or in

Thanks for the information Frank.  However, I was obtaining CAD quotes
up until about a week ago.  Nothing has changed on my system and I have
had FQ 1.47 since at least the beginning of the year.

I also get quotes for HKD and AUD currently.

Other than building the latest GC from source, there is no way to obtain
later releases of GC.  I have had high hopes for Snap and Flatpak, but
neither connect with FQ.

Re: [GNC] Not Getting Complete Stock Quotes with Price Database Tool

2018-08-24 Thread Les

I am using LInux Mint 18.2 and GC 2.6.17.

Since someone a while back that switching to Yahoo as json most of my
stock quotes have been up-to-date.  My only problem is being unable to
retrieve quotes for the 8 currencies (I think the last update I received
was in late July).  If memory serves, the last update to F::Q (1.47) all
currencies look   to Alpha Vantage for quotes.

Dan,

You are not alone with this problem; numerous users have lamented the ongoing
saga of retrieving commodity prices online since Yahoo! decided to pull the
plug on its quote system. AlphaVantage has been the solution that everyone here
flocked to, and now AlphaVantage is altering its enforcement. [I will note that
my solution to this has been to accept that GnuCash will not provide me a daily
balance on my investment accounts, and leave it at that.]

Having run into F::Q problems twice in a short period of time, it seems to me
that this problem is likely to rear its head repeatedly, insofar as when a glut
of users suddenly puts the hit on a free server, the increased demand forces
the provider to throttle access in some way to maintain its viability.

Your idea is an interesting one, but I would actually broaden the RFE to ask
that Finance::Quote have some mechanism that would allow more principled list
tactics, such as:
* limiting requests submitted at a given time
* retrying entries “n” times before returning an error
* starting retrieval of prices with the oldest commodities in the file

This last would allow a user to maintain price updates for a file with a large
number of commodities.

Adding this sort of configuration to F::Q might reduce the likelihood that
GnuCash users slam the next online quote source and cause them to lock down.

Flatpac and it went without a hitch.  However, there was no support for
obtaining quotes for stocks or currencies, even though F::Q 1.47 was

I am still using LM 18.2 on my production laptop running GC 2.6.21 which

suggest that if I couched it as a Bug (i.e. version 3.2 fixes a lot of bugs)
then I'd stand a better chance.

There is a version 3.2 coming through in Debian unstable. Seems like it might
make it into 18.10, but that wouldn't get it into 18.04 or Mint 18.2. Getdeb
used to be an option, but it died with no explanation last September. There was
also an Ubuntu PPA which died. I offered my services to try compiling 3.2 but
received no response.

It seems like perhaps your best option is one recently suggested on this list,
which is to uninstall your current version and install the flatpack version, (a
sort of app container, which includes all the dependencies). I installed this
on a spare laptop, and it seemed to work and opened my 2.6 file without issue,
but I haven't really kicked the tyres on it.
https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.gnucash.GnuCash

I think Linux Mint includes flatpack by default, so it may just be as simple as
flatpak install flathub org.gnucash.GnuCash
flatpak run org.gnucash.GnuCash

Of course, backup your accounts files, config etc first, so you can go back to
2.6 should you need to.

I just migrated from Quicken to Gnucash. Loving it so far!

The question i have is: Will Gnucash 3.2 be available for Linux Mint 18.2?
The software manager installed 2.6.12
i did the apt update and upgrade and still same version is listed.

i also tried the getweb but got the same version, at least it told me the
same version was installed already.

I see the new version can be built from the source, but I am far from being
a Linux expert and never done that before.

Re: [GNC] Flatpack GnuCash v3.2 available in Linux Mint and flathub website

2018-07-07 Thread Les
Thanks for posting the Flatpack information.  I have a test machine
running Linux Mint 19 on an older Dell laptop.  I went to the Flatpack
site and installed GC 3.2.  The install went without a hitch.  I
transferred my latest GC file on my production machine running GC 2.6.21
and Linux Mint 18.2, to that machine and opened the file.  Everything
looked great except:

there are no totals for Assets, Current Assets, Investments and several
other accounts.  Also there was a $4.70 difference in Profits.  I
haven't taken the time to track that down as yet.

I really like the ease of installation that Flatpack provides.

Thanks,

Les

Installs OK and indistinguisable from my own build on my system. Can be
downloaded from the flathub site directly if you're not on Linux Mint.

The flatpack runs as /usr/bin/flatpack --b. Not sure how that handles other
flatpack software? This is my first flatpack installation. whereis gnucash
does not return anything so the flatpack obviously hides the installation.

The flathub version may be a good option for Linux users not interestedin
building from scratch but wanting the latest stable version. It seems to
distribute up to date Linux packages independent of the distribution
packagers, which some recent posters have been seeking.

Re: [GNC] Strange Problem

2018-06-22 Thread Les
I guess the problem stems from the fact that although I had set the
stock to get online quotes through AlphaVantage, the stock didn't
update.  So, as John Ralls stated, the stock is not visible in Price
Editor without a price. So, following the his instructions, I went to
Price Editor, selected TSX, Add, and entered yesterday's closing price.
It is now visible.

I have never encountered this before, as I guess all of my previous
stocks had updated prices through online quotes.

Thanks to all for the help.

Les,

As John points out, you can use the Add button to enter a price even
if the security has no prices displayed already. In fact, this is a
freeform entry where you can manually enter prices for any security or
currency in any currency, whether you have or have not set up a
security account in your chart of accounts.  Conversely, if you have
set up online retrieval for a security and that retrieval has
succeeded in obtaining a price, then you will be able to find it in
the Price Database display, again even if you do not have a security
account set up in your chart of accounts.

Re: [GNC] Problem With Price Editor

2018-06-22 Thread Les
I have set up a large number of stocks, so it is not my first by any
means.  As a matter of fact, I setup another stock prior to this one
without any issues.  Same procedure.  I have several brokage accounts
and stocks in several countries, including Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong,
Australia, previously other countries. Each country has its own
currency, so the stock in question is in Canada, so I assigned CAD for
its currency.

I am puzzled by the sequence that you described.
You stated that you went through the process of setting up a security
account  but then you assigned a currency to that account which should
be impossible because it is a security account.

Then you stopped before you got to the part where you would go back to
the price editor and look under the namespace where you assigned the
security to see (or not) the security symbol that was in the
securities list.  Have you previously set up other securities?

I have searched my emails and cannot find John Ralls' reply.  I can only
see it via your adding it inline to your reply.  For what its worth, I
am using Thunderbird and when I post something, it ends up in my Sent

Re: [GNC] Problem With Price Editor

2018-06-22 Thread Les
Ok, sorry.  I am running Linux Mint 18.2 with GC 2.6.21.  I am still
having problems with AlphaVantage but manage to get downloads a couple
of time per week.

For the record, I have been using GC since 2008.

I setup the new stock by click new account, entered the name of the
stock and selected stock from the list and selected CAD for currency.
This took me to the Security Editor where I reentered the stock name and
its ticker symbol.  I checked get stock quotes and selected AlphaVantage
for the source.

I then went back to the stock in my investments folder and entered the
date acquired, the number of shares and the price, then the amount of
the charge for the purchase, and then selected the brokerage account.
Clicked save.

Les,

It is important that you clearly define your problem when you ask for
help in this maillist.

I see that you have been trying things out with GnuCash for some time
now, but when I sampled your comments I did not find a consistent
pattern of mentioning the OS, or GnuCash version when asking about a
problem.  I think that you are using release 2.6.21 installed by a
procedure called Snap, which I know nothing about, into some version
of Linux.  If you are now trying to use release 3.2, there is a
completely different set of possible issues.

Further, I am confused about whether you completed the entire process
of creating a security in the security list (which is not an account,
by the way) with a proper ticker reference and security type as well
as creating a security account associated with a brokerage account and
entering an initial buy or sell transaction.  While the part of
creating a security account and recording a purchase or sale is
optional, it (a)helps to have a way to see the security in your data
and (b)creates an initial price entry in the price database.

I also saw that you were having issues with setting up AlphaVantage
earlier. Did you resolve those, or is that a part of the problem you
are now having with the price editor?

Several of us are willing to help, but we need more specific details.

Thanks for the information. Although I haven't documented failures as
you have, I have experience times when obtaining quotes was near
impossible.  I just tried again with the same results (no quotes).

It usually takes me several attempts before I can obtain all my quotes.
(I have stocks listed in several countries and about 8 currencies.)

I've noticed that around the 15th or 16th of every month since the switch
from Yahoo to AlphaVantage, I've had only limited success getting quotes
using Finance-Quote. Admittedly, I have a long list of equities that I track
but usually I get them all on the first try. Occasionally, a second pass is
required to get one or two quotes that are missing initially. However, for
whatever the reason, I have difficulty getting the majority around the 15th
or 16th of every month. I usually request updated quotations once a week
early on Saturday morning. Today was no exception and, as usual, the list
for which no quotes were available was a long one. Fortunately, I'm able to
download the complete list of the prior day's closing values from another
source so that I can manually enter the quotes that Finance-Quote missed.

Re: [GNC] Alphavantage Problem

2018-06-16 Thread Les
As of now, I am still unable to download prices. :-(  I have verified
that nothing has changed with regard to my setup.  Still using Linux
Mint 18.2, GC 2.6.21, AlphaVantage key is still residing in
/etc/gnucash/environment.  I can obtain limited quotes using the
terminal, but many of the quotes cojntain "deduced" with no data.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue, greatly appreciated.

Not cash but probably cash equivalents (so still under current
assets). Other "negotiable paper" probably treated the same way. But I
learned in the old days, and perhaps now* that direct wire transfers
are much used, maybe modern accounting has another take on this. The
point is, this is not really a gnucash question. You don't have a
problem about HOW to enter an account for these but WHERE in the CoA
the account belongs. That is an accounting question, not a gnucash
question << you are looking for an answer that would apply even were
you keeping books the old fashioned way, pen and ink on paper >>

Michael D Novack

* The point here is that going back hundreds of years, "bills of
exchange" and other negotiable paper was how large amounts were moved
over distance. Much safer than shipping gold.

Re: [GNC] Snap Package Manager

2018-04-17 Thread Les
After creating a new saved file, I tried installing GC 2.6.21 using
Snap.  When I entered "snap install gnucash" I received a message "no
gnucash found"!

So much for snap, at least for now.

Regards,

Les
