Re: Router Configuration Backups?? [7:70009]

2003-06-03 Thread Vincent Tocco
We use Pancho, it's a perl script that downloads the configs via snmp.
Just setup a cron job on a unix box..
http://www.panchoproject.org/

After you setup that, you can run diff on the files to see if anything
changed.. Maybe every night?

Re: Sanity Check - ISDN and EIGRP [7:66016]

2003-03-23 Thread Vincent Librandi
Hi Chuck

From the look of the problem the best solution to the problem would be to
move the redistribution from R1 to R2 and run OSPF over the link. Which then
allows you to use an OSPF Demand Circuit reducing the time the link is up.

But if the problem specifically mentions that EIGRP must be redistributed on
R1 then from the look of the instructions all you need is an Access list
that allows no broadcast IP traffic to initiate the link and allows
Multicast packets to initiates the link so EIGRP is able to form a neighbour
relationship. From memory there is no version of Snapshot for EIGRP, but I
could be wrong. If there was that would be the answer. Hope I haven't
confused you more Chuck :)

I'm working on a practice lab problem.

there are two domains - OSPF and EIGRP

The two domains can only communicate via ISDN

 OSPF---R1---ISDN--R2EIGRP

R1 is where redistribution takes place. The ISDN link is in the EIGRP
 domain.

Pretty much I've concluded that the only way this works is that here have
to
be static default routes on R1 and R2 pointing to eachother. The only
other
way I can see this working is for the ISDN link to be permanently up.

Unfortunately, the lab instructions are not very clear on this point. The
 only relevant instructions are:

 1) no broadcast packets should initiate a DDR session. Multicast packets
should be able to traverse the ISDN link.

 2) use an access-list 120 for any filters you may need for DDR

 3) only IP traffic will need to traverse the link

That multicast instruction is interesting. Am I on the right track
thinking
the test here is to let the link stay up forever by defining the EIGRP
 hellos as interesting ?? thoughts?

  I wasn't aware you couldn't purchase a /24 from
  ARIN. I'm not really
too knowledgeable on that type of thing. I only cut
  addressing space
from our nets when needed for our customers. I have
  never gone out
and tried to purchase addressing space from ARIN.

Purchase really isn't the right word. Allocation
  is the correct
term for handing out provider-independent address
  space. ARIN, RIPE
NCC, and APNIC won't just hand out space to anyone
  that brings them
money; they will need to see a justification and
  will review your
efficient utilization if you ask for more.

You can multihome to multiple POPs of the same
  provider, with
provider-assigned address space. See RFC 1998. You
  can even do this
with PI space and a private ASN, although it's sort
  of a kludge. See
  RFC 2270.

There are also engineered solutions where two
  providers originate the
same prefix, which is technically an inconsistent
  AS but is not
uncommon and doesn't really create problems.

The address registries also make no guarantees if
  your address space
will be globally routable. There is a trend to
  reduce the number of
prefix length filters, but that also means the
  current routing
architecture will run out of steam in 4-8 years.
  I'm involved in the
Internet Research Task Force effort that's just
  starting to look at
what comes after the BGP architecture.

BTW I have a neat HSRP BGP redundancy solution to
  fix the downfall
of using this combination if you'd like to hear
  about it?

Where can we apply for a class C IP address? ARIN
only sell a larger block IP address. I believe if
  we
want multihomed with different ISPs (AS), we need
  to
setup BGP with both ISPs as peering.

ARIN and the other registries will generally
  allocate /24 if you can
show them contracts with two upstream providers, at
  least 50%
utilization of your current address space, and
  various other
  justifications.

You will probably need an AS number as well for
  general-case
multihoming. There are requirements there. RIPE NCC,
  for example,
requires that you write out your routing policy in
  RPSL and put it in
the routing registry; this is optional but
  recommended for ARIN.

Note that the address and routing data bases are
   separate.

The dec and ieee spanning tree protocols are functionally the same,
but incompatible.

I don't have the packet formats from the dec spanning tree algorithm.
I assumed there are no devices talking the dec variant around any more.

The dec variant predated the ieee standard. The dec variant used
Ethernet envelopes rather than 802.2 envelope. Given that IEEE definitely
wouldn't standardize on something that didn't use 802.2 envelopes, dec
didn't make any attempt to get them to keep any of the rest of the packet
formats, since it would have to be incompatible with the deployed dec
bridges no matter what.

As I remember it, the timers in the dec dialect were in units of seconds,
and in ieee, in units of 256ths of seconds. And ieee added a port priority
field.

Just for curiosity (I seem to have jumped into the middle of a thread here),
why does anyone care about the original dec spanning tree? I didn't bother
writing it down for the book since I assumed (in 1992!) that it would
quickly become irrelevant, and the differences are not intellectually
interesting...just if you have to interwork. So are people trying to
interwork with 10 year old bridges?

Re: K values - help! [7:31631]

2002-01-11 Thread vincent naughton

Components of the EIGRP Metrics Calculation

In basic terms, the values are K1 - K5 are multipliers that give preference
to the metric components of bandwidth, load, delay, reliability, and MTU.

  a.. By default: K1 = 1, K2 = 0, K3 = 1, K4 = 0, K5 = 0.
a.. Delay is the sum of all the delays of the links along the paths.
a.. Bandwidth is the lowest bandwidth of the links along the paths.
  Component
 Equation

  Delay
 [Delay in 10s of microseconds] x 256

  Bandwidth
 [1000 / (bandwidth in Kbps)] x 256

EIGRP uses this formula to calculate a metric if K5 is not equal to 0:

 X

If K5 is equal to 0, then the metric formula is:

If K1 = 1, K2 = 0, and K3 = 1:

Metric = bandwidth + delay

In basic terms

K1 = bandwidth

K2 = Load

K3 = delay

K4 = reliability

K5 = MTU

 wrote in message
[EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]...
I failed maths dismally at school now im faced with this metric stuff ...

IGRP calculates the metric by adding together weighted values of different
characteristics of the link to the network in question. These values
(bandwidth, bandwidth divided by load, and delay) are weighted with the
 constants K1, K2, and K3. Here's the formula:

 Metric = K1 * BandW   (K2 * BandW)/(256-load)   K3*Delay
The default constant values are K1=K3=1 and K2=K4=K5=0, so:

 Metric = BandW   Delay
If K5 does not equal 0, an additional operation is done:

 Metric = Metric * [K5/(reliability   K4)]
To find BandW, find the smallest of all the bandwidths from outgoing
interfaces and divide 10,000,000 by that number. (The bandwidth is scaled
by
 10,000,000 in kilobits per second.)

... can anyone put this into very very simple terms i don't understand how
 the K values work

a prize will be awarded to the reply i understand :?\

but just bear with me. I believe that criticisms of
 the utility of industry
certifications could also be said about the college
 degree. Sure, CCIE's
are routinely put into high-level positions that
 involve little of the
hands-on configuring and troubleshooting that is the
 very heart of the CCIE.
But as we all know, many companies have positions
 that require job
candidates to have a degree, but few of those
 positions actually require
the knowledge of the exact subjects people learn
 in college. Would-be
 flamers, hear me out.

Consider the average bachelor's degree. If it is in
 the humanities, you
spent quite a bit of time studying various authors
 or artists, writing
papers on literary and artistic criticism (the who,
the what and the why of
the artist/author and his work) and being exposed
 to various cultural
schools of thought. If it was in a social science,
 then you most likely
studied a lot of socio/political/economic theory and
 their application. If
you studied a science or engineering, then
 high-level calculus was the
order of the day, in terms of expressing events in
 mathematical terms. If
it was computer science, then a whole lot of
 abstract programming theory.

But regardless of what you studied, I think it is
 universally true that
college graduates with whatever degree then plunge
 into their careers and
rarely use the actual skills that they picked up in
 college. Barring those
who have entered academia, how many times does the
 typical grad with an
English degree get the opportunity to do an literary
  analysis of Elizabeth
vs. Victorian poetry? How many real-world graduates
 of economics, in their
day-to-day working life, actually have to whip out
 supply/demand curves and
calculate marginal utility? Even the engineering
 graduates (historically
one of the most applied of all the college
subjects), how many times do they
really have to derive out a 40-line thermodynamics
 multivariable calculus
formula using just pencil and paper, and within 15
 minutes?

Ah but, college administrators and the pundits of
 education will stress,
what make the college experience so valuable is not
 the subject matter per
se, but rather the base level disciplining and
training of the mind that is
the ultimate goal. It is not the memorization of
 the political theories of
Plato that is important, rather it is the improved
 cultural exposure, the
openness to different philosophies, and the ability
 to conceive of and
defend a particular thought. It is not the ability
 to quickly derive and
calculate the eigenvectors of a linear algebra
 matrix that is important,
rather it is the improved grasp and understanding of
 abstract concepts that
is the real prize. In short, you college grads
 are hired not for the
precise subject matter that they studied, but
 because they have demonstrated
enhanced thought processes and the ability to
 quickly learn whatever skills
 they need for their career.

Having said that, I believe that the CCIE is
 evolving into a similar role.
CCIE's are prized by employers not because they can
 type a config for and
troubleshoot a OSPF NBMA frame-relay network without
 using subinterfaces and
while still electing a DR/BDR in less than an hour,
 typing at 150
words-per-minute. Rather they are prized because in
 the course of their
study, they have substantially improved their
 knowledge of networking
fundamentals and have developed a systematic and
 logical method of fixing
 problems.

Now, some readers out there might take exception to
 the above paragraph and
point out that there are some CCIE's who have
 developed more than a
superficial knowledge of networking, and obtained
 their 4-digit-number just
by memorizing a whole bunch of CCO configs. Of
 course I'm sure that has
 happened.

Yet the same thing also happens with the college
 degree, but you hardly ever
hear anybody complain about that. I think everybody
 college graduate has a
story about somebody they knew who was admitted
 just because he could play
a sport, or because Daddy donated a lot of money, or
 something like

Cisco 2600 is a modular router like the 3600, and is capable of

Thank you very much for pointing that out. Now it does actually make

To do the upload, can I go through the AUI interface, via a transceiver,

 I've done this a few times on 2600's (doing a cross-over between the 2600

Re: Bridging over DDR [7:6206]

2001-05-29 Thread Vincent Chong

type-code 16-bit hexadecimal number written with a leading 0x; for
example, 0x6000. You can specify either an Ethernet type code for
Ethernet-encapsulated packets, or a DSAP/SSAP pair for 802.3 or
802.5-encapsulated packets. Ethernet type codes are listed in the appendix
Ethernet Type Codes.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios112/112cg_cr/8rb
ook/8rtypeco.htm

wild-mask 16-bit hexadecimal number whose ones bits correspond to bits in
the type-code argument that should be ignored when making a comparison. (A
mask for a DSAP/SSAP pair should always be at least 0x0101. This is because
these two bits are used for purposes other than identifying the SAP codes.)
Examples

The following example permits only LAT frames (type 0x6004) and filters out
all other frame types:

access-list 201 permit 0x6004 0x

The following example filters out only type codes assigned to Digital
(0x6000 to 0x600F) and lets all other types pass:

access-list 202 deny 0x6000 0x600F
access-list 202 permit 0x 0x

Use the last item of an access list to specify a default action; for
example, permit everything else or deny everything else. If nothing else in
the access list matches, the default action is normally to deny access; that
is, filter out all other type codes.

Manoj Sekhar Hi all,

I have client want to connect two Branch offices using DDR and
access a netbios based program form one branch to the server
on the other branch. They got one 801 and 803 with ip only IOS.
The DDR is configured with IP and the routers are getting
connected over ISDN. Now the netbios program is the problem.

I thought of two options a) use IP tunnel and b) Transperant Bridging.
I was looking in the Cisco Cd for the info and got the explanation
and sample config on transperant bridging. But one point of defining
interesting traffic I couldn't grasp. The info from the CD is as given
 below

 access list access-list-no {permit|deny}type-code[mask]
(Permits packets according to ethernet type code)

The corresponding line in sample config was

 access-list permit 0x0800 0xFFF8

Can anyone please explain type-code and mask in the command
and the values in the sample config.

Hope the background info doesn't bother you.

 Thanks in advance

Re: external modem on 2500 router [7:6355]

2001-05-29 Thread Vincent Chong

Yes you can attach modem in the aux port or console port.

You can perform reverse telnet from your router to modem via console port.

jim terry Can an external modem be attached to the Aux port of a
router with a
console
cable? If so, what is the port number for it that I would telnet to?

 Thanks,

Weird OSPF result [7:6369]

2001-05-29 Thread Vincent Chong

Hi all;

I have very interesting question that I want to discuss.
I set up an frame-realy Hub and spoke OSPF in my lab environment ( only 1
routing protocol).

r1- Hub (Cisco 2501, Enterprise Plus)
r2- Spoke (Cisco 2513, Enterprise Plus)
r3- Spoke (Cisco 2620, 1S, 1E, 1BRI, IP Plus)
r4- Spoke (Cisco 2511 IP Plus)
r5- Frame Relay Switch

When I was trying to distribute defualt route into OSPF domain by
the following command
 default-information originate always metric 100 metric-type 1
into R2

The expected result is that, other router in the same OSPF domain will have
default route, metric 100 and type 1.
But I did not have the expected result, only type 2 distribute in other
router, try to adjust bandwidth, etc, .

When I tried to implement the same configuration but differnet spoke
(2 4) the results was expected.
Any comment will welcome!

PS. All the spokes have similiar setting, except the one implement defualt
route ( 2 areas and 1 defualt route)

Re: Weird trace results [7:5259]

2001-05-21 Thread Vincent Chong

I suggest that you check your routing table, that's what come out my mind.

HTH
Vincent Chong

Watson, Rick, CTR, OUSDC All,

When performing a trace on an IP address (for testing purposes we'll use
10.1.2.3) this is the result I get:

 router#trace 10.1.2.3

 Type escape sequence to abort.
 Tracing the route to 10.1.2.3

   1 192.1.2.2 4 msec
 192.1.2.10 4 msec
 192.1.2.2 4 msec
   2 10.1.2.3 0 msec 4 msec 4 msec
   3 * * *
   4 * * *
   5 * * *
   6 * * *

This to me shows that I am still trying to find a path to the IP
address...but if the IP Address is returned at the 2nd hop, why is the
trace
still continuing? I thought that it would stop when the trace has the
path. Also note that when a ping is performed it returns the infamous
 .

This has really got me perplexed, and any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Maybe I am just not understanding something about the trace command/ICMP.

Re: Help its very very urgent ..isl trunking [7:5272]

2001-05-21 Thread Vincent Chong

First, trunk mode is desirable, non-neigotate, auto, none, something like
that.

Second, isl is an encapsulation method, it is not a trunk mode.

I am pretty sure you have layer 2 problem, cdp command is layer 2
troubleshooting tool.

I believe that the token ring white paper provide you more then enough
information to tackle the token ring section.

I suggest that you read it carefully, make sure you understand what is
the stuff, not just memorize the question and answer from the paper, remeber
that the paper is not a braindump paper.

Down by 11, I suggest that you need to review your weakness before
taking the exam again.

It's just my opinion, and I do not mean to offend anyone.

Good luck in your next exam

how do you terminate a session while leaving the others (or just the
original telnet to the access router running).

 Mark,

When you get the blank line, then press enter and end up back at the west
router, do you have a Resuming connection to xxx... line before west's
router prompt? If not, I dont think the escape sequence is being
acknowledged. When you input the command, do ctrl-shift-6, then release
all
3 keys and quickly hit 'x'. Kind of a moot point here, but in some cases
(say an AIX box with a 3151 terminal), only the left ctrl key can be
used..

Another thing to try would be hitting the spacebar when you get the blank
line instead of enter. If the escape sequence IS working, then the enter
key is taking you back again, and spacebar may cause the prompt to
display.

Re: Loopback interface for OSPF [7:4802]

2001-05-17 Thread Vincent Chong

By the way, cisco has new command can control the router id under ospf
router configuration.

router-id x.w.y.z (in ip address format)

Vincent Chong

Brad McConnell There's not much point in putting the loopbacks in
their own area unless
you're in a lab scenario and trying to make a bigger, more complicated
network. ..At least not that I can think of. However, there is
definitely
a usefulness for loopback interfaces in OSPF -- use them to set your RIDs
(used to indentify the router in OSPF LSA's) to controllable, meaningfull
addresses. This doesn't even require that the loopbacks be part of the
OSPF
domain, just that they be configured and up. Highest loopback IP on the
router will be the OSPF RID of any LSA's generated by that router (as
shown
in commands such as show ip ospf neighbor, etc)...

Re: OSPF dropouts [7:3964]

2001-05-10 Thread Vincent Chong

1)First I will suggest you that you use log-adjancey-change command.
By apply the command, the router will send a syslog message when
an OSPF neighbor state changes. It can provides a higher level
view of changes to the state of the peer relationship with less output.

2)Check the physical interface status, like show interface etc.

  Hi all,
This isn't directly certification-related, but maybe people can practise
 their trouble-shooting skills.

I have a frame relay link that occasionally drops the OSPF adjacency
across
it (average once a day maybe, but it can go several days with no problems
and then get several hits in a day). Apart from the brief disruption,
this
causes the ISDN backup to kick in, which is not something I want to happen
unnecessarily since the call is from one side of Australia to the other
:-)
Each access supports other PVCs as well, which do not have problems.
The PVC does not drop out.

I have debug ip ospf events and debug ip ospf adjacency turned on. One
side will announce that the other neighbour is dead, and start rebuilding
the adjacency. The side that detects the problem first varies.
There are a small number of CRC errors at one end, and some broadcasts are
dropped at the other end, but the numbers are consistent with links
throughout the rest of the network which are problem-free.
Both routers have had the cables re-seated and have been reloaded.
Traffic shaping is in effect and should be preventing traffic from
overloading the smaller access rate. There are some FECN/BECN/DE packets,
but again, nothing at unusual levels. I have no reason to believe that
the
traffic pattern on this link is different to others in the network.

 IOS is 11.2. One router is a 7505, the other a 4700M.

I assume that hellos are being dropped occassionally (and fairly randomly)
across the link, and that sometimes enough in a row get dropped that the
timer expires. The links are monitored via MRTG, and there is some
correlation between increased usage and the problem, but there are plenty
of times of higher utilisation with no problems. Very short-term bursty
traffic may not show up in MRTG, though.

Any tips on what to check/fiddle with next? My thought is to get the
carrier to check out the link and see whether they can see any problems in
their cloud. I have no doubt the answer will be 'no', but they may fix
 something while they're looking :-).

 Ta,
 JMcL

Types: Line error (CRC error, illegal bit find in Token or frame), Internal
error, Burst Error, ARI/FCI error

Non-isolating soft error: Cannot be isolated to a station and the stations
NAUN or the cabling between them.

Types: Lost frame, copy error, receive congested, token error, frequency
error.

The cyclic redundancy checksum generated by the originating LAN station or
far-end device does not match the checksum calculated from the data
received. On a LAN, this usually indicates noise or transmission problems on
the LAN interface or the LAN bus itself. A high number of CRCs is usually
the result of a station transmitting bad data.

There are 3 type of LMI connection state: Active, Inactive, Deleted.

Active:The remote and local circuit to FR Switch are operational,
router between 2 end can exchange data.
Inactive: The local circuit to FR Switch is working, but remote circuit
to FR is not working.
Deleted: No LMI is being received from FR Switch. Or the service

1) The network 172.20.0.0 is under the routing protocol of eigrp and igrp.

2) The process no. for each routing protocol is the same, so
automatical redistribution

3) The summary route send to router igrp process in the router Earhart.

4) The IGRP neighbor will exchange update and it will include the

The pesron who set up the topology said that it was a valid topoloy without

But I am not agree, because the topology violate the OSPF area rule, virtual

will not function as expected no matter authenication or not.

For I am not a OSPF expert, I would like to hear any advice, suggestion,

Yes it will, please checked with cisco web site before you post this

Joshua Beining It seems that there is some confusion wrt network
modules and 2600/3600
routers. Searching on Ciscos site, they say that the NM-4T is not
supported

NM-4T for 2600/3600 routers. Am I missing the doc from Cisco that says
the

 Thanks.

Re: ISDN BRI up but does not ping [7:2712]

2001-05-01 Thread Vincent Chong

1)It is very obivous, definitely routing problem.
since show isdn status is active and up, ppp layer is successful.

2)Define static route to the destintaiton network. Link state protocol
is not recommended.
For example, Eigrp will trigger your ISDN always up due to protocol
characteristic. It will constant exchanger
hello packet,. It is not recommended.

I am getting trouble in ISDN bri link. I have a
Central site Router 3640 with 12.1.8 IP/IPX plus IOS.
the route has 4 port BRI module. The remote site is
having 2503, all u know that it has 1 port BRI. remote
site is running 11.2.1 version of IOS. The call is
placed using simple DDR commands as:

 Cisco 3640 Router
 =
 Int bri 2/0
 ip add 130.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
 encap ppp
 dialer idle-timeout 300
 dialer fast-idle 300
 dialer string
 dialer-group 1

 Remote site (2503):
 ===

 Int bri 0
 ip add 130.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
 encap ppp
 dialer idle-timeout 300
 dialer fast-idle 300

In this scenario, a/c to customer need, the central
site is placing call. When the call has placed, and we
see the debug output, it shows all the debug of ppp
negotiations and ISDN events as correct, with the
install route at the end. When i run 'show isdn
status' it shows me all layers up with one active
layer 3 call also. Also 'show isdn active' gives me
successful call to remote site. So nothing seems to be
wrong with config. THE problem is that after
connectivity when i try to ping from central site the
remote site ip address, it times out. I took the 'show
ip route', and it gives me only connected routes but
dont show me the remote LAN network address of each
site which it should give as i m running EIGRP at both
sites. The primary link is working correctly as i have
an SCPC 128K link between the two sites as well and
showing correct routes. The switch type in pakistan
normally we use is basic-net3 (SIEMENS switch). Can
anyone plzz help me, where is the issue?? i have tried
everything, dialer profiles and all. but nothing seems
to be working, i cant ping the other side thru BRI.

Sam Deckert Hello everyone!

Just wondering if someone could explain the difference between the
different
 IOS Feature Packs.

Ie. What is the difference between IP Only, IP Plus, IP/Firewall etc etc.

Do you know of a site that compares the capabilities of each? I have been
looking on the Cisco website with no luck so far

Also, I am looking at buying a 2651 router, and was just wondering if the
IOS that comes with the router is capable of routing IPX as well as IP.
How
expensive is it to buy additional software if it is not supported??

 thanks

Hey all...we are having a problem where workstations sporatically will not
be able to obtain an IP address from our DHCP server. After about 4
minutes,
you can perform a manual renew from WINIPCFG and you get your IP address.
This has baffled me for quite some time and I have recently been told it
is
our Cisco 2924 Switch to blame. The story I was told is below. I welcome
any
comments for or against this opinion. Thank you for your time.

It appears the problem is connected to the spanning tree algorithm used
by the CISCO switches. By default, ports on the switch block as they are
initialised; during this phase the port is in its spanning tree algorithm
learning and listening state - it is not forwarding. This is
specifically
aimed at ports that will be used to connect to other switches/routers in a
stack. After a default time (4 mins?) they switch to the standard
forwarding
mode and everything seems normal, the problem is that you have missed all
the important DHCP broadcast and acknowledgment from client to DHCP server
 during this period.

You can change this default state by changing the PORT-FAST setting on
each port. The port is then immediately in the FORWARDING mode as it is
initialised. By default this setting is DISABLED, I have ENABLED all
ports except the ports doing the linking to other switches

If you router is failed to load up IOS, you need to upload your IOS via
