Hi Ron,
Sorry for the lack of information.
I've been running this version of Legacy for some considerable time. Apart
from my initial problem (so long ago, I can't remember the details) it's
been running perfectly.
Nothing has been installed or deleted and I've been starting Legacy the same
as always, from the desktop.
A couple of days ago, the problem started - I opened Legacy and the opening
screen appeared with the usual 'tip'. That's as far as I get. Whatever I
click on, nothing happens. The tool bar at the top remains white, with
nothing clickable. I can't even close Legacy using the top right x. No
message appears.
The answer to your questions - It happens on every occasion and no error
message.

Desperate for an answer, please.

Thanks, Alan. At first I though you may have had the same problem as Roy,
but obviously not. I have not come across this before with Legacy although
it is clear that the loading process hangs at some stage.

I would initially suggest that you uninstall and reinstall Legacy to see if
this resolves the problem. Doing so will not affect your data files. If not
it may help if some of the usr files are deleted before reinstalling but it
would be better if someone with more knowledge of these then I assists.

This sounds like the old problem of Legacy opening a window off-
screen. Because that non-visible window has the focus it appears as
if Legacy has frozen. Try temporarily renaming Legacy2.USR to
something else and see if that cures the problem.

I just received a message from you to the Legacy list that was about
9000 KB. I don't know what it contained because I had to go to my server

it if you would be more careful in the future and not send something
this size to the list. I hope that your problem is resolved regarding

If I click on End Now, after a few moments the normal Legacy program

I had a little over 14,000 individuals in the Leggitt database. I

[LegacyUG] Missing Sources Report

2006-12-03 Thread Tim Willis
Does anyone know of a way to make a report of items you have on your file
that are missing sources?

Something that would say something like:

Simeon Walling b. 1756, Glocester, Rhode Island (Birth missing source)

I know ALL of us ALWAYS site our sources the moment we put them into the
database... right? But in the odd event that we put something in we forgot
to site or something

Any way to do this?

is what happens when people who have no clue about email and choose to totally
disregard proper netiquette send messages to a server that is incapable of

block large attachments - but I think such attachments should go
directly to whoever is going to use it. Those large attacments to the
list affect lots of people.
**
Is the Legacy User Group different from the rootsweb lists? They will not
allow Attachments or HTML, which is good.

David,

As a fellow Ntlworld user, but who uses Eudora as
his email client, I can assure you that I
received an attachment of size 6.19 megabytes, a
zipped file of a backed up Leggitt Legacy database.

I get Eudora to download it into a subordinate
folder attach and because of being on broad
band, it is downloaded silently in the background.

Look for a file called Leggitt.zip, dated
03/12/2006, in the folder, attachments to emails addressed to you are stored!

You may get a surprise.

This could not have happened with a well-organised Rootsweb List! grin

It is a pity that the LUG allows attachments of
this size to be sent out on its List.

I feel especially sorry for those LUG members on
dial-up - 6.2 megs is a lot of dial-up time at 65K or lower baud rates!

Just my 2ps worth (Good old British money - none of your Euro stuff!)

RE: [LegacyUG] 8MB attachments

2006-12-03 Thread David S Brookes
I really couldn't believe the 8MB, bit so I checked my e-mail list. 8MB is
about 8112KB. The largest e-mail that I have has this month is 161KB and
that was with a pdf file attached (not from LUG). I have deleted the
original start of this thread, but surely the writer meant 8KB?

I also suspect the writer is referring to leaving previous e-mails in the
body of the text instead of deleting them, not file attachments.

2006-12-03 Thread David S Brookes
June,

The way I understand it is that anyone can add a 'flag' to an e-mail and it
doesn't necessarily mean an attachment. I could be wrong here because I
never use them. In IE you can add a red exclamation mark which shows an
e-mail of high importance or a blue downward pointing arrow to show an
e-mail of low importance. It may be different for each e-mailer programme.

I too never receive any attachments. What confuses me tho, is that emails
come in showing an attachment 'flag' but there never is any attachment, and
as I say, definitely not the one being discussed. Why is it that some folk
do some do and some don't?

Art,

In which case, a retired USAF Major (Roy .) has a lot to answer for!

For it is he who sent out a list of alive people
in the Legacy database that was in the 6.198
Megabyte attachment sent to this list.

I wonder if he would be backed up by the DOD?

Hope he has a set of good lawyers and heaps of dosh!

He might need it!

Broadcasting lists of live persons in this way is way dodgy!

His ex might be very angry with him!

RE: [LegacyUG] 8MB attachments

2006-12-03 Thread David S Brookes
I may be misunderstanding you here, Glenda. I have understood attachments
as being separate files not in the body of the e-mail, and, yes I have to
click on them to open them, just like you. I have never had an attachment
from anyone in the Legacy user group and that is why I did not understand
anyone writing about '8MB attachments'.

If, however you reply to a mail by clicking on 'Reply', the whole of the
e-mail you are replying to is printed at the bottom in the body of the
e-mail. This I have never regarded as an attachment, but I think it may
have been what the original 'post' of the thread was writing about.

Hope I haven't confused the issue, here.

Best wishes

RE: [LegacyUG] 8MB attachments

2006-12-03 Thread Trent
In this case, one user offered to help another with a problem and requested
that his data file be compressed and then emailed directly to his email
account. The user did email it to that email address but then also added as
a cc: legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com. This cc: is what then caused
this data file to then be sent to everyone on the list.

There was no reason to cc: the list.

One other word of caution. The file was a .zip file and these can be used
to hide viruses. One could make it look like they were innocently trying to
send a file for help while hiding a virus in a file of this type. Therefore
opening it would then expose everyone on the list.

I am assuming though that the party that made this mistake, made an innocent
one.

Regards,
Trent

Glenda,

My ISP is Earthlink DSL. It works just like AOL, my previous ISP. The
email opens when I indicate by a click of the mouse that I want it opened,
the attachment is not opened until another click of my mouse indicates I
want to see the contents of the attachment. I don't have to open any email
or attachment I don't want to. I saw the attachment, knew what it was
because of the earlier conversation and the kind offer to help, felt it was
surely a mistake on several counts, and simply deleted the message with
it's attachment of 8481 KB. Are people saying that their email client
automatically opens attachments? -- Alice

[LegacyUG] Exaggerated Information

2006-12-03 Thread ArnieAbr
How do I handle this situation?
I asked a relative to fill in her General Notes in the appropriate area for
her data. I did not look at it when she wrote it or check it. Recently, when
I was updating the data for the corresponding areas for her children, was
when I noted the (let us say )exaggerated information concerning her education
and accomplishments etc. Has any one had this happen and how was it handled?

RE: [LegacyUG] 8MB attachments

2006-12-03 Thread Dave

If I understand your thread correctly, you're misinterpreting what prompted
this whole discussion. There was a message containing a 6+mb attachment
which was a zip file containing someone's entire legacy database. It wasn't
in the body of a message. It was a very large attachment. And it was sent
to the LegacyUG mailing list address.

Best wishes

03/12/2006, in the folder, attachments to emails addressed to you are
stored!

MessageDave, I am using IE6. I chose to show the attachment marker (a paper
clip). It shows on some posts on the LUG, not all, but there never is an
attachment (on the LUG msge) although it often/sometimes shows an attachment
marker.

That is what I don't understand, why the marker shows when there is nothing
there; and why do I (and you, if not others) not get the attachments when
others do? Still so much to learn!

My daughter often sends me attachments and they show, and are there, without

  June,

The way I understand it is that anyone can add a 'flag' to an e-mail and it
doesn't necessarily mean an attachment. I could be wrong here because I never
use them. In IE you can add a red exclamation mark which shows an e-mail of
high importance or a blue downward pointing arrow to show an e-mail of low
importance. It may be different for each e-mailer programme.

I posted a response and I've no idea where it went.

8 MB is not accounted for by HTML in the post, nor by failing to trim the
previous posts from the reply.Only trying to post an article, a very high
resolution and large photo, or a genealogical file of some sort could account
for that.

I never got it, because neither Yahoo nor Roadrunner accept mail that large.
It would have bounced back to the list server.

If someone wants to share a large file it has to be posted to a web site, and
frankly they'd have a hard time finding a web site to which they can upload

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Sources Report

With Legacy, you can only find people with no sources at all.
I do this by highlighting all Master Sources, using Show List,
tagging the list and then looking for people without that tag.

For more specific missing source information, you currently need
GenViewer - a Legacy Add on

Cathy

At 03:29 AM 4/12/2006, you wrote:

Does anyone know of a way to make a report of items you have on your file

Simeon Walling b. 1756, Glocester, Rhode Island (Birth missing source)

I know ALL of us ALWAYS site our sources the moment we put them into the
database... right? But in the odd event that we put something in we forgot
to site or something

Any way to do this?

may be misunderstanding you here, Glenda. I have understood
attachments as being separate files not in the body of the e-

 you.

Nope - that is what I meant. I didn't plan to open it so it wasn't
a problem for me, but I did get the attachment. I guess it is a
problem for others, even if they don't open it.

 Glenda Holmes

Not a problem here either Glenda. However, under no circumstances are
individuals supposed to be sending attachments to the list. The sad part, the
individual who made this major blunder hasn't even had the common courtesy to
apologize.

[LegacyUG] 8MB Attachments

2006-12-03 Thread Kay Fordham
1. I did indeed receive the much discussed attachment. It was a Legacy
zip file of a database. I deleted it.

2. The sender stated he had sent the zip file to Henry Peterson.

3. While I cannot speak for the sender, it appears (from the #2 statement
above) that he did not intend to transmit the document to the entire Legacy
List.

4. I acknowledge that this may have caused problems for some individuals on
the list; however, let's stop beating a dead horse and move on to more
productive conversation.

This sounds like the old problem of Legacy opening a window off-
screen. Because that non-visible window has the focus it appears as
if Legacy has frozen. Try temporarily renaming Legacy2.USR to
something else and see if that cures the problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashes

2006-12-03 Thread RoadRoy

Everyone,

I truly appologize for sending that large file to the mailing list instead
of just to Henry. As you will see, I am using gMail for this mailing list. I
hit reply to all so I could get Henry's address and then deleted the list
from the cc: line. Something definitely went amiss. GMail didn't display the
message until after the upload was complete. By then I couldn't do anything
about it. I just crossed my fingers and hoped that Legacy did not allow
attachments. However attachments must be allowed.

Again, I am really sorry for the inconvenience I caused.

After I check out Henry's fix I will share the results with the list
(without attachment.)

Roy

Henry,

Turning off the alarm made no difference. I have attached a zipped copy of
my database.

Thanks for offering to help,

Roy

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashes

2006-12-03 Thread RoadRoy

Everyone,

Henry did some magic and sent the file back to me in working order.

Recall that I said I exported two family lines and they both worked well.
After I posted my query I also exported the remaining family line (the one I
accidentally sent to everyone) and when I opened it it worked well. I then
went back and exported the 14,000+ file and opened it successfully.

Apparently the exporting process does some cleanup and removed whatever
caused the problem.

Mary, I am surprised that you were able to successfully open the file. A
previous copy of the original file worked well on my wife's machine.
However, when I upgraded her copy of Legacy to version 6.0.0.110 and the
file was reformatted, her Legacy worked (improperly) just like mine. I still
feel there is something in the new version that reacts with my specific
database.

Again, I apologize for sending the large file cc: to the whole mailing list.

[LegacyUG] Short location versions on events screen

2006-12-03 Thread Susan Daily

As I am nearing publication, I decided I wanted to see Short Locations
only when I looked at my events - how they would print. I went to
Options - Cutomize - View and selected Use short location names on
screen views. Okay, so now Family and Individual view show the short
location names, but the events list still has long locations.

So what am I missing - how do I affect the view in Events too? Even if
it is just the sentence output, that is all I want.

Thank you
Susan
