[newbie] Signature Script - Fortune

2004-05-08 Per discussione David
Hi List,

Early last month I posted with regards to my signature script and fortune. It
all works well but about the same time someone posted and gave a code, for want
of a better word to follow the fortune line to limit the size of the fortune
affixed to the signature.

Have seached my mails for last month but no can find. Could someone give me some
leads on this.

Thanks

 limit the size of the fortune affixed to the signature.

Add the -s switch to the fortune command, and it will choose only 'short'
quotes.

I need to make a script that will choose a random
name from a list of names ( up to 6 ) and then fill in a cell with that
name. Its for assigning people to chores.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

works when ran from the CLI. Any ideas on where I'm screwing up?

Did you just switch to Evolution? For some reason it requires signatures
to be in HTML format, so you need to add a br where you want a line

[newbie] newbie script help

2004-01-04 Per discussione mike
Greetings and Happy NewYear,
I would like to write a script to accomplish a task, and then run it at
regular
intervals (I'll start another thread for that). The thing is I know zero
about
programming and in process of learning.

I have a stand-alone firewall (mdk9.1) with no X installed, and a wireless
card and my access to the internet is from a access point else where.
I would like to get the info from /proc/net/wireless (on the firewall)
like below.
~$ date  cat /proc/net/wireless
So after a while I came up with something like this below

#! /bin/bash

#Take wireless link readings from /proc/net/wireless and output to
#file wireless_stat
{ date; cat /proc/net/wireless; }  wireless_stat
--
That seems to give me what I want and I like to set it up to run every 5
minutes with  cron.hourly  (next thread).
Now every 24 hours I would like to take the file wireless_stat and
tar/gzip it
up and start a new one like below.
~$ tar -c -z -f wireless_stat1.tar wireless_stat
then run
~$ rm -f wireless_stat; touch wireless_stat;
How would I write a script that it would increment the the archived files
like logrotate does? For instance.
~/tmp$ ll
-rw-rw-r--1 mike mike 3084 Jan  4 08:44 wireless_stat
-rw-rw-r--1 mike mike  359 Jan  3 19:33 wireless_stat1.tar
Then 24 hours later this.
~/tmp$ ll
-rw-rw-r--1 mike mike 3084 Jan  4 08:44 wireless_stat
-rw-rw-r--1 mike mike  359 Jan  3 19:33 wireless_stat1.tar
-rw-rw-r--1 mike mike  359 Jan  3 19:33 wireless_stat2.tar
This where I'm getting stuck would this be a loop? or a statement?
Would it be a (if, while, for,)? I have a book to help, but I'm afraid
my brain is stuck in a (loop) of not understanding and can not
progress... :-)

Any guidance would appreciated,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Your script to 'logrotate' the files could look like this:

#!/bin/sh

filetest()
{
if [ -f wireless_stat$1.tar ] ; then
   mv -f  wireless_stat$1.tar wireless_stat$2.tar
fi
}
cd /directory where your files are
filetest 4 5
filetest 3 4
filetest 2 3
filetest 1 2
The filetest function takes 2 arguments, being the oldest and one newer
file (you can expand this check to as many as you like, but if you want
to keep things around forever, this would not be the best way to do it).

To run this thing, put it somewhere and let root's cron take care of things.

Thanks Paul!
I think I understand the function is to take the oldest which is the
first argument
if it exists rename it to the second argument. So it cd's to my file
directory and
sees if wireless_stat3.tar it would filetest 3 4 (rename file3.tar to
file4.tar) and
2 to 3, 1 to 2. Yes, I was wondering how to keep it from running
forever. I see
now by what you have in your script.

Now to put it all together could I do something like this?
-
#! /bin/bash
tar -c -z -f wireless_stat1.tar wireless_stat

something()
{
if [ -f wireless_stat1.tar ] ; then
   rm -f wireless_stat; touch wireless_stat;

filetest()

cd /home/mike/tmp
filetest 4 5

filetest 2 3
filetest 1 2

Good! :)

Now to put it all together could I do something like this?
I'd suggest this:
#--start script
#! /bin/bash
filetest()
{
if [ -f wireless_stat$1.tar ] ; then
  mv -f wireless_stat$1.tar wireless_stat$2.tar
fi
}
cd /home/mike/tmp
filetest 4 5
filetest 3 4
filetest 2 3
filetest 1 2
tar -c -z -f wireless_stat1.tar wireless_stat
if [ -f wireless_stat1.tar ] ; then
 rm -f wireless_stat; touch wireless_stat;
fi
#--end script
First you define the function (it is only defined, not run), then you cd
to $HOME/tmp. Then cycle the backup tar-files. That way you move the
existing backups out of the way, preserving the old #1 as #2 and getting
rid of old #5 in the process. And then you build the new stat1.tar after
which you create a clean stat-file. Do you see the logic in this?

I hope this is clear enough.
Good luck,
Paul

I believe I do now, I had things reversed, I should of taking care of
moving my backups
to make room for the new ones before deleting the first file, else lose
data!
Also I noticed that I was trying to make a function out a if statement (
something() )
which was not necessary, probably not right either *grin*
And the #--startscript, #--endsript to know when the script begins and ends.
I should also add some comments about what its doing for my sake.

I hope this is clear enough.
Yes, again thanks Paul!
You walked me right through it, easier than I thought it would be.
I'll probably post back on the running the cron part but, I'll research
it a bit more before I panic. :-)

Johan,

I could be wrong on this but I don't think leaving the Windows
partitions mounted would cause a problem. As you are using Linux and not
going to run any viruses through wine you should be okay. Don't save any
files to the windows partition before running a virus scan against them.

Where did you read that? It is nonsense.
If you connecting with Linux you are not going to get any viruses anyway, and
a Linux virus (If there were any in the wild) would not gravitate to Windows
partitions. It could only do damage in the linux partitions.

But if it would make you more comfortable to unmount your windows partitions
while on dial up, then use the scripts
 /etc/ppp/if-up.local and  /etc/ppp/if-down

Kppp will automatically run the scripts in those files. You will probably have
to create them, and do not forget to make them executable.

[newbie] post script to html

2003-09-17 Per discussione ed tharp
I am sure there are lots of filters to render a postscript document to
html.
What I am hoping for is some recommendations from someone who has tried
a few, and can suggest which they found produces the best html, easiest.

[newbie-it] script

automatizzire tutto in un unico comando lanciato attraverso at o cron
Grazie e ciao!!

Re: [newbie] Bash Script to change file prefix

2003-09-05 Per discussione bascule
okay josenildo,
if you don't have exif support in your camera then you might want to rename
files based on their timestamp, i do this with my camera because it also
creates avis and wavs, by renaming them before editing the 'modification'
timestamp of the files is the time they were created, i copy them to a temp
directory using 'cp -a' and then run the attached one-liner in that
directory, if you only have files with the one suffix of course then you
won't need the bit about storing the suffix in varaible!
i guess what i'm saying is look at the 'stat' and 'date' commands :)

  OK, it is a Pretec DC-520 USB camera. I use GTKam to grab the pics.
  GTKam has an option I have just seen, a box to check and save exif
  data. I checked it, saved more pics but they don't seem to be any
  different from all the others. All the pics are saved with the .JPG
  extension. That's it. As I said, it's OK.

 Don't know if it helps, but some setting in kde lets you see an
 enlarged thumbnail together with exif info when you hover over the
 image. Example attached - note the exposure info.

GRANDE MIKE!!!

#!/bin/bash
NUMPAGINE=50
LISTA=it de en
for LINGUA in $LISTA
do
NUM=0
CARTELLAIN=$LINGUAcartella
mkdir $CARTELLAIN
while let $(($NUM=$NUMPAGINE))
do
URL=http://127.0.0.1/pagina.php?lingua=$LINGUAnum=$NUM
echo $URL  url
FILEIN=$CARTELLAIN/$NUM.htm
wget -i url -O $FILEIN
NUM=$(($NUM+1))
done
done
rm -f url

  poi passale a wget -i input -o output

 dal man...)..

 quindi wget url/$n -o  file$n
 han n istanze di wget, ma funzia...

   Can someone suggest a script to do this for me so I don't have to

   nice if I could run the script and it asked me for a syntax , which
   would be different in each event , and then added it in place of the
   bit
   of syntax to be removed.
   I think it might be nice if I could just copy the bash script file to
   the source directory and run it from there, dunno though .

Here's a script modified from linux magazine dec 02/jan 03. Which will
rename files.
---
#!/bin/sh
for photo in *jpg;
do
mv $photo `echo $photo | sed 's/dsci/bankholiday/'`

done
---
Run it in the directory where the files are. You can modify to take
arguments ($1 $2 etc). test it first ;-)

Cyb,

I'm assuming you're working with a bash script and I've used bash for
this, but I've found perl to be easier to work with. I've got a script
already written that does something similar to what you're needing. It
would take only a wee bit of modification to change it to do specifically
what you want. I've attached it. Please feel free to modify it any way you

 Cyb,

 I'm assuming you're working with a bash script and I've used bash for
 this, but I've found perl to be easier to work with. I've got a script
 already written that does something similar to what you're needing. It
 would take only a wee bit of modification to change it to do specifically
 what you want. I've attached it. Please feel free to modify it any way you
 wish. if you have any questions just holler.

Thank you very much for this. I'll check it out.

 Yes, that one. I installed exif before running it.

My guess is that your camera might not use exif headers, then? What
happens if you do:

exif -t DateTimeOriginal yourpicture.jpg

That should give some output with the last line being a value of the
date and time the picture was taken. Let's see what that gives.

Can someone suggest a script to do this for me so I don't have to
manually retype the file name in properties for each file. It would be
nice if I could run the script and it asked me for a syntax , which
would be different in each event , and then added it in place of the
bit

I think it might be nice if I could just copy the bash script file to
the source directory and run it from there, dunno though .

Possible ?

Also out of pure curiosity why does the file names all end in * ?

Not sure what you want John, but I think *rename* will do the
job. It's a little awkward IMHO, but try *man rename*. At least
I had some succes with the same problem.

My getpix script will do this--you're welcome to take a look at it and
see how I did the renaming scheme, which is basically called like
getpix -n bankholiday which would give you bankholiday-001.jpg

[newbie] bash script to send files to tar from rox-filer

2003-07-20 Per discussione Eric Huff
I program quite a bit in other languages, but am somewhat new to bash,
so this may not be the most elegant program, but i'm having fun learning
it!

Anyway, i put this in ~/Choices/SendTo as tar_rox

In rox-filer, if you select several files or dirs and Send To tar_rox,
it'll tar them up in the same directory w/o the entire path to the
files/dirs. (any structure w/i the dir will be preserved).

I have to go outside (ah!) now, but i'll add prompting for filename as a
learn a bit more. Then probaly a pipe for sylpheed...

The if chunk's purpose is to strip the filenames off the arguments,
since they come in with full paths, and to
find the path of the files (since pwd is ~/).

Thought this might be of interest to some, and any bash(ing) comments
are welcome!

 Yes!

That's way better. That's the area where i will have to learn the most:
what functions are out there. It's fun to learn the hard way, too,
though...

Thanks for the command,
eric

Here's the basename version:

#!/bin/bash

FILEPATH=`pwd` #will be reset to files' path if needed
echo $@ | grep -q /

if [ $? = 0 ] ; then

# get filenames
FILENAMES=''
for item in $@; do
FILENAMES=$FILENAMES `basename $item`
done

#get path
FILEPATH=$(echo $1 | sed s/`basename $1`//)

else
FILENAMES=$@
fi

echo $FILEPATH
cd $FILEPATH

tar -cvf tmp.tar $FILENAMES

If you are running it from the command line, put a space and an
ampersand after the name of the Perl script, like:

At the command line, starting a file with a ending will make it run in
background.

As in ./setiathome . I hope that helps.

1) init 6
2) lilo con opzione linux (meglio se in modalità single)
3)init 0.

ho provato con:
init 6:lilo;linux:init 0
ma non funziona esegue subito init 0!

eppure avevo uno script tipo
init 6:lilo;win

Thanks, Steve. As I suspected, you have a relevant line in --scanbus, which I
have not. I'll have to have another go at trying every available port, and
see if I can get there. Until I get that entry nothing is going to work, I
think.

Another thought Anne,

I have the Finepix S303 so I am assuming your camera is close to
the same. Last night I found out the camera is supposed to be in DSC
USB mode when you plug it in. I was thinking to myself that it always is
in DSC USB mode so I never thought anything about it. When I was

is it possible your camera is set to PC Cam instead of DSC?

Pulling straws here!

Yes, mine has the xD memory (I am at work so I forget if it is dX or xD! LOL)
but that is what mine shows also when I plug in the usb cable. I just assumed
that was the way it was - did not know that it could be used as a pc camera
also. For now, I do not need the function of a pc (web) camera...that is
probalby another headache.

Remember I said before, but the documentation that came with my camera stated
something about not being fully compatiable when using a usb hub - which is
what you are using it sounds like. Would be a shame if that is the only reason
you need to boot into Windoze is to get your pics.

Is there anything I could do; ie, run some commands and post output to the list
here from my setup at home for you to compare? If so, state exactly what you
need me to do (show commands I need to run) because I am still very much a
newbie when it comes to Linux terms and commands. I can do anything to help
you this evening or tomorrow - will be at work today for another 8 or 9 hours

Ok,

I usually do not reboot my system either (I leave it on 24/7) I had just
not remembered themount -a command and thanks to windoze for starting
me on this habit - I ended up rebooting.

As for that move command in your script I had mentioned earlier, I think
it would be best to leave it as a copy command instead.

I haven't used the camera enough yet to figure out how to delete
individual pics yet...I just do a format of the memory (that is how
the camera lists the action) and all the pics are deleted.

Again, thanks alot Todd for supplying that script! I am telling
everybody that it was actually easier to get the camera working in linux
compared to windoze! (Well, they don't really need to know of my noob
expriences in trying to get it to work!)

Only problem - more of a distaste - with windoze was all the ok or
next button clicking, and of coarse the complementary Windows needs
to be rebooted in order to finish installing your software thing.

No problem. I just added the option to rename pictures using -n flag, so
if you call it like ./getpix.sh -n birthday2002, pictures will be named
birthday2002-001.jpg, birthday2002-002.jpg etc. Plus I cleaned up a couple

Regarding the mounting, I read up on it and it seems that you have to use
the long version (-t vfat . . . ) if you don't have an entry for the
camera in/etc/fstab, but if you do have an entry in /etc/fstab, you don't
need to use the long version.

In my opinion, you are correct.

/mnt/camera is the mount point

mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 is the mount command

If you were using a terminal to mount this, you would type

mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera

 If you define a KMail receive account which has 'Local Mailbox' selected as

 It is also possibe to use procmail to take mails from Postfix, and

 You will find an example of postfix/procmail if you follow the link below.

I hope I have not explained myself clearly. Postfix+procmail combination will
distribute mail to diff persons. But what I want is a common inbox and outbox

using isp SMTP. Hence the arrangement above I have made. Any other solution

(ma quella originale), dovresti utilizzare l'opzione -p, esempio:
cp -p /mnt/frodo/da_ARCHIVIARE/SF/RaccontiBallate/Romanzi/Arwan/*.rtf
/mnt/floppy

[newbie-it] script e crisi

accetto), vorrei sapere come farlo partire...

#!/bin/bash
#copia i file rtf su floppy

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

cd /mnt/frodo/da_ARCHIVIARE/SF/RaccontiBallate/Romanzi/Arwan/*.rtf
/mnt/floppy

if the question isin dos I would have put this batch file script in
autoexec.bat to get it loaded each boot, is there something like that for
linux? then the answer would be to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local
and include the line towards the end, insuring the end of line is to be
sure the console is returned after your script
