now i fully agree with this it seems like the majority of the
discussions are about the latest ugly edit or moodyman track and why it is
ok or not ok to bootleg it or pay 20 pounds/dollars for it or just stupid
off topic rants that have nothing to do with 313..meanwhile a good
amount of techno is released and goes unnoticed for about 2 weeks untill
someone finally brings its up.

now there is nothing wrong with theo and kdj record discussions i love
these guys and we support the 3 chairs here in portland...but i myself
have seen basically the same thread over and over conserning these
guys..but man i dont know the last time someone did a review/opinion
of a tunnel 7 track...see in MY OPINION it seems like alot of people
just want to collect cool 313 records and let the list know they own
them..its almost like a cool contest or something you cant be
taken serious unless you have ugly edits 1-7 and kdj #
whateverand don't you dare comment on someone unless you have
these special limited tracks..yea some on this list know more than
others, but who careslets try to include THE WHOLE LIST not just the
ones who have accsess to the limited cool guy records ..i just would
like to talk about 313 techno/ or 313 techno related stuff more often
instead of the price of a beer in manchester or what stupid english slang
words mean...or how anyone who talks over there records need to be poked
in the eye, all of it is just plain stupidity..

 Agreed but..

i'd be happy to discuss dj bone or gary martin or any other of the

 some great releases this year.

just had a thought: maybe the fact that UR have gone off the boil in

Well i still love most of the UR releases :) but besides that. There
has been enough detroit techno, only no one hardly mentions it on this
list. People keep on discussing house no one hardly ever mention
Puzzlebox releases here or Tunnel 7 or that new label Plan A etc.
There is still a lot of good techno coming out lately. Almost no one
mentioned the new 154 album on delsin, or stuff on headspace, emoticon,

I generally like commentary on records when it feels like a perspective
from somewhere who was around teaching history. For me, What Happened falls
into this category. There are some records where it feels like an
overplayed gimmick like Blaze's 'Do You Remember House', which I find
obnoxious, forced and boringly elitist. Blaze rock otherwise.

here's a revolutionary thought (and im not trying to be a prick by

dont mention every single record i get on this list, just the ones
that i feel need to be discussed. so you should start threads
about the records YOU think need to be discussed. and so should

the track Vitamin, and I've hardly stopped listening to it, so I went

Hi

I'm going for the worlds longest topic title. Will I win?

However

Had a couple of records lately that sounded pretty cool, except for some
wally chatting rubbish over the top.

Example:

Blake Baxter Abe Duque What Happened : Well, I dont know, but I dont
want to hear your thoughts on it on some club record, thanks. Get a webpage
and tell us or something.

Kerri Chandler Back To The Raw. Nice fingers bassline, raw house track,
duly ruined by Kerri giving it the big one What happened to house music
that was raw dark and hard blah blah blah etc. Dunno mate, but for
starters you've been playing wally style bongo house for a while, so why
dont you work it out. DJ Deep saves us on this occasion with his edit, by
getting rid of the spoken word vox and leaving the raw, good house track
as it should be. This track is RECOMMENDED btw! Check piccadilly for
clips.

Can I put forward the motion that any one chatting over their records
should receive a poke in the eye?

Thanks

Oh, and I ask you all : if you have mixes to stream or want to be resident dj on

I don't think that a discussion about whether vocals add to or
detract from a house/techno track is a brilliant example of
something that's phenomenally off-topic. Especially when it's
specifically referring to What Happened?, which is undeniably
a 313 track.

The thing here is that everyone has an idea in their heads of
what they'd ideally like to see discussed on 313, and these
ideas differ from person to person. Everyone, I'm sure, has a
few minor gripes (I'm not a huge fan of the ongoing KDJ/Theo
discussions either) but probably thinks they're the only one
who does. And every now and again these gripes spill out into
a bit of a moan, in which some people will point the finger
at other subscribers while other people will look for more
exogenuous reasons for the problem (such as Tosh's question
about the amount of 313 techno that's actually being released
these days).

Ultimately, the only statement I'd agree with absolutely is,
if there are things you'd like to see discussed more often
on 313, then start discussions about them.

Hey, I happened to find that post pretty useful and on topic. Put me
onto a couple of tracks that I might not have stubled across otherwise.
And that's why I'm sub'ed to this list. It was also done with a bit of
humour and had a different slant on it so chill out.

I think if anything this lists lacks is people with a sense of humour.
As soon as someone makes any sort of joke or sarky comment, they get
their heads bitten off!

I think most of the off topic conversations on this list stem from
people moaning about the OT messages. This list stays pretty much
on-topic, especially compared to some of the other lists I sub to.
Almost all threads are about music, which of course sometimes touch on
other things in life but this just stops things from getting flat and
2dimensional.

This list has been full of people moaning about Otness for ages. I
remember when people were moaning about links to mixes or tracks they
did as being OT. The current lack of content, if anything, could be put
down everything being seen as OT.

Well the problem is that when you try to start a threat about a techno
record people ignore it. The reason that this list is so off-topic
sometimes is not that there seems to more detroit house then techno,
the subscribers are more into house then to techno. Which is fine be me
but if you are not looking for good techno you probably won't find it.

I have to admit that these ongoing discussions about the latest KDJ

although i try to keepoaway from the drama that routinely fires up on the
list, i feel i have to add to this one and agree with kj about this
off-topic business

the main reason why i never feel compelled to post is because, like kj said,
most posts about techno (or whatever isn't everyones flavour of the month)
tend to get ignored, and often interesting posts just get warped into some
sort of list-inside-joke. and yes, an awful lot of house does get discussed
here...

having said that i would like to say that some of my favourite records of
this year are (with little comments so as to make this list more
informative):

154 - strike: besides the fact that i love every single thing this guy has
released, this is just a timeless classic, the music is simply beautiful

sleeparchive - elephant island ep: ice cold bleep minimalism, like a cross
between sahko and plastikman

aroy dee - glow: beautiful music that treads the fine line between house and
techno. side b is a superb abstract techno monster.

jeff mills - those 3 7: more bleeping nighttime techno. i am really
enjoying mill's latest releases; i am re-discovering mills...

luciano and serafin - funk excursion: side a only - great long and
upbuilding, hipnotic, midtempo

okay, now this is hurting my head. the law of supply and demand is
pretty simple to follow: if people supply something and there's no
demand you dont continue to supply it. or you do and you work to
create demand.

anyway, i think youre wrong in that point. ive seen many
discussions after marcel posts links to new techno tracks. ive
seen plenty of discussions this year about kenny larkin, juan

just ignore it even if it doesnt necessarily generate the large

I've noticed this too KJ. Maybe if anyone wants to remedy this, I might
be able to offer the opportunity! :-) I'm interested in this series of
Orlando Voorn releases on Ignitor. They have a peculiar history, as far
as I can see. In fact, I hadn't recognized the 'Basic Bastard' project
as a Voorn one until they started to appear on Ignitor (the label deal
with Submerge.) He had had a number of releases under the BB tag on
Spiritual records in the mid-90s. I passed on them because I thought
they were little more than bangin' nonsense. When 'Cruisin' appeared
(the first BB) on Ignitor, I was intrigued because it was the first
Ignitor track (I think) after one of my favorites of last year,
'Diligent'. But when I heard it, I was surprised because it was really
linear and far less sophisticated a piece than 'Diligent'. Still far
away from the average 'mono' tackle but not all that special really,
imo. It now turns out that apart from 'Cruisin', the BB tracks are
pretty old.

It'd be nice to know what some other people think of the series. I think
this is a worthwhile topic because it's about a veteran 313-related
artist with a solid body of past work, a lot of which I *do* like,
despite my wariness about the Basic Bastard material.

I have Cruisin I think, not too good with track titles but I liked both that
and the track on the other side. It to me is really classic sounding Detroit
techno, not at all too mono, but just the right deepness while still having
enough drive for the dance floor. It's a kind of sound I think of as 313 but
don't hear so much.

I thought the other sides of the Fix Flash on electrofunk were kind of cool
too, though definitely kind of older, had this real nice ghettotech feel but
with a lot of substance.

Unfortunately haven't really had cash to buy more of these records this year,
but was actually thinking about trying to pick more of his stuff up. Would
love to hear any track by track reviews. Well I should probably just go to
submerge eh?

Oh and his set at Movement was HOT despite crap sound.

SO, did anybody buy any really great electro records this year? Maybe
banging stuff with a slight 313/UR feel, stuff I could rock the dance

SO, did anybody buy any really great electro records this
year? Maybe banging stuff with a slight 313/UR feel, stuff I

The claro intellecto ep sections as well as the previous piece of mind both
have some serious space cadet bangout electro on. Also the big booty ep on
electrofunk by mr. De is Ghetto heat for real.(nobody knows about these
bxtches...). Ultradyne's priviledge of sacrifice joint as well as the cities
in retro bizness are both ESSENTIAL. Kinda evil too. In like that evil witch
that everybody wants to tap cuz she's so hot kinda way. I liked the sterac
stuff but couldn't afford to buy 'em. The arne weinberg 7 (aw001) has a
break that I consider electro, but not in the typical drexciya definition. Not
banging so much as trancending melodica, but electro nonetheless. Also another
arne track, the one on starbaby (can't think of the title) is dope. I'm not too
big on the fabrice lig rmx, or the other, more minimal electro track with the
atonal sawtooths,, but the lush track with the falling one note bassline is the
bizzomb, sounds so urgent and futuristic (ahh those verbed!
out bells...). Also coming out of this into cybotron-clear has become one of
my after I clear the floor standard moves. Always gets 'em back in the
groove. I never got any of the dynarec joints though I still want them soo
bad. Mecha on the rick wade thing is one of my fave electro releases of the
year though pretty far from banging though, more moody than anything.
Man there's tons more I can't recall right now. Have to flip through my bag
when I get home.

How's that for techno talk? Am I cool yet? Oh wait! **reaches for a kool

2004-12-10 Thread Kent Williams
Here's something that's stunningly relevant to this mailing list.

While there are a lot of people from all over the world on 313, there
are still a bunch of people in the Detroit metro area on 313. Some of
them are even somewhat in the know about what's going on, or are on
good speaking relations with people at KMS and Transmat.

Could someone maybe have a chat with the folks nominally in charge of
Movement, and get a status report?

I don't really care about specific names of performers as much as
whether the infrastructure is in place, whether the City is going to
be supportive, whether potential sponsors has been contacted, whether
the EFFING THING IS GOING TO HAPPEN. Stuff like that.

Without exaqggerating the importance of the people on this mailing
list, if there IS going to be a festival, we're an enthusiastic street
team, who can be very helpful to the festival in many ways. It's not
too much to ask them to throw us a bone. and I don't mean DJ Bone.

what i think plays an important role in the decline of 313-techno being
discussed on this list compared to, say 4 or 5 years ago, are a couple of
factors:

1. most people now subscribed have been on this list for a long time, and
have allready heard/read all the who is drexciya threads etc. so once a
question pops up, it either gets answered quickly, or it passes everyones
attention, as it seems irrelevant.

2. the knowledge available outside of the list has grown enormously. was
the 313-list one of the few places to get information on drexciya, s.i.d.,
retroactive records or santonio echols, nowadays a google search will
provide you with information, where a couple of years ago all you got was a
link to a recordstore when typing drexciya into google.

3. if you go back to the '94 archives, and up to the late 90ies, a lot of
information is shared on the period from '86-'94. all this information is
now common knowledge, so it doesn't get discussed anymore, whereas a
couple of years ago it made up for 20% or so of the total information flow
on the 313-list.

4. and perhaps not as much techno is coming from detroit as it was a decade
ago, where the rest of the world has caught up.

all these factors combined, result in a decrease of on topic posts.

What a complete and total rip-off of two great tunes (Phylps Trak Ride

It's not so much that he sampled these two tracks - putting these two

this - it's horribly cheezy wooshing cymbals and sound efx. This fcking

Any musicologist would nail this track right away for being what it is - a
big 'ol ripped off sample.
Spastik you can get away with since it's mostly drum programming. Not this
one however.
If they did replay the track - it's far too close to the original. I
think they should have to be able to remake the track again, live, in
court. To show the judge that they did indeed make the track themselves.

I hope they didn't license it, that way Moritz can hit them hard with a
lawsuit.
Suck some wind out of their sails. Fcking thieves.

good speaking relations with people at KMS and Transmat.

Heh. Actually, it's kinda funny - I had this proto-posting in
my head in response to the OT thread, and one of the things I
was going to mention was how *few* people in the Detroit metro area
were still on the list. (No more Rob Theakston, no more Bryan
Bickell - R.I.P., no more Steve Lammers, no more Dave Walker, ...)
Some of the others still here don't post anywhere near as often as
they used to (Jeff Klein, Dan Sicko, ...).

That's definitely colored things differently around here - part
of Detroit Techno Culture to me is the Culture part, and hearing
about goings-on in Detroit.

Mailing lists always have an ebb and flow to them, and are
defined by the characteristics of the posts of the members.
I can't really contribute to the list in terms of records
anymore, because I don't buy any records. (I do appreciate all
the references though, as I can find a few things on SoulSeek.)

A lot of stuff on this list is pretty obscure - I see artists
and labels fly by me a lot of the time that I've never even
heard of. (Garrett just turned me on to DJ Grovskopa, for
example - I'd never heard of him. Vaguely Surgeon/Regis-like
goodness - check http://www.psnz.net/grovskopa.com/mixes.html out.
I love it - just had never heard of it before.)

Part of what a mailing list does is act as a Commons -
if people post about that hot new 12 of Grybbnik by Mystipikl
but no one else has it, there won't be many responses, will there?
And the original poster will think Sod it, no one wants to talk
about Mystipikl, I won't post anymore. Self-defeating, really ...

Nothing in particular, just some things I like that are in the same general
area of sound.
There is always great music out there if your mind and ears are open to it.
It's hard to beat some of the first records of any particular new genre,
especially if you were around to hear it develop.

Black Dog records are great because they remind you of a certain time but
there's been loads of releases since that are just as great if you remain
objective. Plaid stuff has been pretty damn cool.

Sorry, but speaking of poking people's eyes out, I really feel like doing it to
anyone who uses the phrase intelligent techno. That is such a pretentious
wanker term.

Most of the music discussed on this list is intelligent, intelligent techno
sounds like an insult to all the other techno - or maybe techno you can dance
to is DUMB?!!!

Anyway, instead of working, I'm surfing Submerge and I'm pretty impressed but
what I see up there. Things I'm considering buying:
Ultradyne - Privilege of Sacrifice
Analog Footprints - Age of Hypocrisy
The Seawolf
The Theory
Gerald Mitchell - Resurrection (w 2nd track on the mp3 sample sounds
banging)
UR 57 - DJ S2, Slide
The Return of Gigi Galaxy - Lips So Sweet

Damn and that is just the start... I'm still listening. This just convinces
me, there is more good 313 techno coming out than ever!

While Alex sleeps I'm posting like crazy... oh well I am really trying to say
on topic things.

I think Grovskopa is good too, I have some friends that are into that whole
circle of stuff, seems like the only good harder techno is coming from that
school of techno these days. Since the other stuff seems to have gotten quite
clubby and cheesy... Reeko is another that puts out pretty decent tracks in
that style, I think Martin Dust probably could inform us more on records in
this style maybe???

Also, on the harder tip, and 313 techno: when Regis came to Chicago, the ATTACK
PEOPLE from Detroit did a super hot hard techno live PA, I definitely recommend
checking them if anyone gets a chance.

I do think the list loses a certain flavor because Detroit peeps no longer seem
to participate. I'm considering hanging out on Detroitluv as a substitute...
Cus I really don't want to just talk ABOUT Detroit, I need to stay up on what's
going down there, as I live in Chicago which I consider to be a sort of sister
city. I'm hoping to take a trip to the D over xmas too - anyone reading this
from the D, it would be nice if you could give me a holla holla.

And yeah, really CURIOUS about movement.

were still on the list.

2004-12-10 Thread Martin Dust
I like this list the way it is, all the different flavours that tip their
collective hat to the D. I really enjoy posts from people like Ken, Matt,
Dan, Greg, Alex, Rob and Brendan etc. just because they all listen to stuff
I mostly wouldn't ever listen to, so when I see a mail with them raving
about something, I nearly always try and check it out, I still don't own a
Theo record mind :) But some of it does sink in, so even tho things go off
topic, I think it would be a sad day indeed if all we talked about was music
that came from 313 - that isn't the point and is far too narrow for anyone
involved in techno.

There's some great knowledge on this list and although we do go off topic
and lark around (I'm as guilty as anyone), lets not all jump down each
others throats, it doesn't matter what other people/media call it, that's
just surface...we call it techno

Hard Stuff

Another fact is that the sound of Detroit has been changing all of this
time and it has not been reflected in the festival or accepted en masse by
many yet. It needs to change, but there are many in control right now that
want to maintain the status quo.

Since Transmat still supposedly has control of the festival, why not send
them an email and inquire. If anything, it will hopefully spur them to get
started. It would be amazingly impressive if they could get it together
*gasp* early and not leave the international folks hanging in the wind. In
case many of you haven't figured it out, there's about 5-10 people that
completely control this festival behind the scenes, and that's the way
it's going to continue. Unfortunately, organization is not their strong

get it done now.

is the sound of Detroit right now, it would be good to hear about a

BTW, is this Nuron/Fugue discography complete?
 www.discogs.com/artist/Nuron
And where has Nurmad Jusat been? Any chance of him producing
 more music?

so if you don't buy anything, then why do you care?

and if all the djs/producers living in detroit have gone to one extent or
the other beyond what the text books call Detroi techno, than isn't that
by default what Detroi techno now is?

hence the problem with naming genres after cities.

maybe you should go start a
DerrickMayKevinSaundersonJuanAtkinsEddieFowlkesAux88DrexciyaJeffMillsRobHoodClaudeYoung
list, so there's no confusion.

Actually the fact is that this IS a list about detroit techno. So I
don't care of if Detroit Bluegrass is
is the sound of Detroit right now, it would be good to hear about a
 little techno hear and there.
Though I can't say i've been too voiceful myself, I can't really make
any reviews of the records that
i'm NOT buying. But we do forget that this is a list about Techno.
