The Soundslike party (Alex posted the LD link) is definately the place to be on Thursday night if you like good music. Raf and Dave are wicked djs and Dani Sicilliano played some great tracks at the party I was at a couple of weeks ago, she was joined by Herbert for a while too. I'll be there if anyone wants to meet up. Friday night at Sonar itself is a pretty good lineup: Jamie Lidell, Soft Pink Truth, Laurent Garnier. The Kompakt beach party is always fun on Sunday but I can't remember the address - ask about, lots of people will be going. Also heard a rumour that Jeff MIlls might be playing the Tresor party, but cannot confirm that. Benoît Pueyo wrote: Ill be at Sonar aswell !! The festival itself may have gone downhill during the last 6 years since I first went, but it's not just about the festival - it's like drugs, "set & setting" is the key ... And as for the pay-to-play thing, I know several people that have played at Sonar (the Plug Research guys, John Tejada) and will ask them the next time I see them if they got paid, got nothing, or had to pay to play. (That said, I bet the lineups at Mutek and the Synch festival outside Athens will be better than Sonar's.) - Greg

Re: (313) SONAR 2005
I think generally the idea has been that it's a huge publicity opportunity for the artists, so it's more than worth doing for free. In fact, I had been under the impression that the artists playing at the daytime event actually paid to play, much the same way as you would pay to have a record stand there - it's all for promotion. I think in that sense it supports the sub-culture far more than a couple of hundred quid and a plane ticket would. I guess when it started up it also wouldn't have been possible to run such an underground event if everyone was expecting their usual fee. Personally, I don' think that's a bad thing at all, I'm all for the scene being based more on mutual support rather than cash, where possible. Though I guess now the festival is such a huge success, it should possibly be re-assessed. - Original Message - From: "kate simko" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "matt kane's brain" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: "Johannes Gronvall" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, March 31, 2005 4:39 PM Subject: Re: (313) SONAR 2005 > > I agree with everyone that says Sonar Barcelona is not worth the trip. > Not only is the lineup lackluster and the city not at it's best at that > time of year, but also Sonar doesn't take care of the majority of artists > that play at the festival. > > According to a trusted Germany producer friend (who has been booked at Sonar), > only the main acts like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills and a couple of > really big English acts with strong management get paid to play. Re: (313) SONAR 2005
hmmm ken i recently saw Mathew Jonson here in rome and he totally blew us away so im thinking it cant get any better than thatjust a feeling. regarding Hawtin & Villalobos, im thinking that the best place ever to see them play is definitely in Berlin, especially at the free Club Der Visionaere after hour club on the river - 'twas a free party and R&R played the most amazing music non stop for over 4 hours after having played most of the night at Watergate. Definitely a party for those who know, a sort of hush hush affair;). anyway R&R as well as Magda (and Dimbiman, and others) are all playing here in Roma for the Dissonanze festival in May, so that's one of the reasons im not feeling Sonar. Plus i've seen almost all the artists form this years lineup, so i dont feel like employing resources to go to Barca and risk seeing something like Mills playing looped bangers to a horde of pilled-up 20 somethings. Barcellona is great, but i think the best period is around the 20th of September for the Fiesta della Merce (local patron saint) where its 3 days of revelling for all the city and there are tons of free parties with international guests, all orgnized by the city council. fab. ps: if you want to know more about Der Visonaere just ask :) - Original Message - From: "Odeluga, Ken" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Robert Taylor" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "fab." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, March 31, 2005 4:40 PM Subject: RE: (313) SONAR 2005 Highlights to me would be: Areal Records, Alex Attias, Matthew Jonson, and maybe Hawtin. RE: (313) SONAR 2005
It is a great city. I just like being in Barcelona with a few friends, soaking up the sun & the atmosphere. Having a good festival to go to is a bonus! I don't like large events / festivals in the U.K usually, but at Sonar it seems to be organized so much better. The sound quality for such a large venue is excellent. __ This email has been scanned by the MessageLabs Email Security System. __

Highlights to me would be: Areal Records, Alex Attias, Matthew Jonson, and maybe Hawtin. > It's the greatest city in the world and there are some great club nights, so > you don't need to bother with the event itself (esp. the night one) Yes, it is a nice city.. ..but please note that it is getting popular in Barcelona to add some fu&k'n "high season" extra to accommodation prices in Barcelona during Sonar festival. I would highly recommend to visit the city some other time.. But if you're going there you should book the accommodation *right now*! Getting some decent and cheap rooms to sleep in is getting difficult..it may be too late already?

I too thought Mills' set was amazing. I loved the way he used the old footage of Donna Summer, Chic & Sugarhill Gang - it was like they were performing live with him. He played 'We are the Robots' as well - that was a definite highlight. I don't hear enough Kraftwerk in clubs! Mills was in the local record shop as well, signing new 7' records & handing them out. Surprisingly, it wasn't even that busy in the shop. G. "Williams, Graham" To: 313@hyperreal.org <[EMAIL PROTECTED]cc: m> Fax to: Subject: (313) Sonar 2004: It Rocked! 23/06/2004 23:20 Good Bits Francois K Sonar Day Friday This was great; a great introduction to Sonar by day, Francois K banged it out, on such a hot day as well. Hey played records for a while then Mutabaruka ranted on for a while, kind of lost interest in this bit, but he finished and Francois K changed the music, he played Star Dancer and the place went mad! He also played Strings of Life and naturally the place went mad again. Richie Hawtin V's Ricardo Villalobos Sonar Nite Having never seen Hawtin play anywhere, and after hearing people rant on about Villalobos, I decided to check this out. Naturally our group was late in arriving at Sonar by nite, we arrived in about 1:45am, so missed the start, wandered over to the room they where on. A massive room, It was great, totally blown away by there set. I would definitely go see them again. Matthew Dear Sonar Nite Friday I can't really remember much about Matthew Dear, but I do remember really enjoying it and having a great time, although there seemed to be some small technical difficulties with the sound, but it didn't really matter. Agoria Agoria banged it out, but not the usual boring hard techno, again can't remember the tunes he played but the place was going mad, I just remember having a good time. Jeff Mills Sonar Nite Saturday Jeff Mills was amazing, I've seen Mills play in Dublin and London, but this was my favourite of them all, I half expected not to be impressed with Mills, but he was brilliant, he played a few classics like The Bells etc. Halfway through his set the "Sonar Model" (one of the faces of Sonar 2004) came on stage with a camera to take pictures of the crowd (although probably no film in the camera), the place was jammed at this stage so many more people there than Friday nite. Mills kept playing although he didn't seem distracted by her, but he certainly had a quick look at her... He was also playing the 909 and brought one to the front of the stage and got on his knees and played it in front of everyone. It looked great and sounded great. Totally impressed by him! They also had 3 cameras looking at the decks on the main stage so you could see from the back of the room... Miss Kitten Sonar Nite Saturday She played twice over the weekend, on Thursday and then again on Saturday nite to fill in for Carl Cox (definitely a bonus). Miss Kitten was great, can't remember the tunes she played with the exception of Stock Exchange at the end of her set. She rocked the place and was dancing around the decks and appeared to be having a great time! David Carretta Sonar Nite Saturday Only saw a small bit of Carretta, again he was rocking the outdoor part of the Sonar by nite. DJ Hell Sonar Nite Saturday Only saw a small bit of Hell, again he was rocking the outdoor part of the Sonar by nite. SonarLab (I think it was the Lab...) Sonar Day Saturday On Saturday afternoon, it was pretty relaxed in the Sonar Village, But at around 5 or 6 in the afternoon the skies where getting dark and you could hear the reliable sound of the 4, 4 coming from the SonarLab tent ( I think it was the SonarLab tent..), about 15 minutes before it started to rain, people started crowding into the tent, the kick drum was like a magnet the place was going mad, it was like 3:00am in the morning, it was jammed, then it started to rain, which made it even busier, definitely one of the highlights of Saturday afternoon was seeing the tent fill so fast and seeing everyone just going for it... I can't remember the exact time, somewhere between 4:30 - 6:00 but it was either DJ Nudge & DJ Paul Naza (I could be wrong here.) Bad Bits Dave Clarke Sonar Nite Saturday Boring Boring Boring! He was $hit! I don't think e even smiled! Why was he the last DJ on Saturday nite

Sorry Questy, I'm sitting out Sonar this year. The lineup's crap, quite frankly (sorry, my Hip-Hop era is a decade behind me) and I can't afford to go anyway, for the same reasons I'm sitting at home this weekend instead of being in tha D, where I belong :-( - Greg

Repeating last year’s highly successful SonarClub experience, the artistic programme this year will feature the multiple styles and sounds that eleven years on have turned Sónar into a frontline trademark. Sponsored by San Miguel, the main sponsor of the Sónar Festival, SonarClub will be the calling card for Sónar 2004 and the meeting point for the festival’s fans in the UK. SonarClub 2004 Programme: Ocean 1 21:00 :: DJ 2D2 He is undoubtedly one of the most highly talked about names on the Barcelona club scene. The secret of his success is no other than an exquisite and engaging selection of beats and breaks. Lot’s of old school rap, a bit of drum’n’bass and the latest in hip-hop underground. 22:00 :: RJD2 (4 decks show + A/V) With his newly released “Since We Last Spoke”, RJD2 has once again proved that he could release an album every bit as surprising as “Deadringer” and that his name undoubtedly deserves a place on the altar of non orthodox hip-hop. 23:45 :: Vitalic live In the wake of his new Ep for Citizen Records, the Ukrainian Vitalic’s best continues to be his spectacular "Pony EP", a record with a tinge of the eighties, freakism and first rate techno which still brings down the dancefloor almost three years on. 00:25 :: Jeff Mills In the avant-garde of electronics and light years away from other pretenders to the throne, Jeff Mills makes it clear to us time after time that his concept of mix and dance music forges ahead opening up new perspectives for the techno genre beyond commonplaces, speed, precision, personality and lots of character. Ocean 2 21:00 :: Dj Food - Strictly Kev Strictly Kev, aka Dj Food, is possibly one of the dj's with the greatest amount of personality and charisma on the international electronics scene. He is one of the acclaimed artists on Ninja Tune and has won worldwide fame thanks to the ease and ingenuity with which he mixes the best of every style: funk, hip-hop, soul, pop and drum'n'bass. 22:00 :: DJ Marlboro The flagship of carioca funk, a kind of Brazilian booty bass, sexual and hyper-rhythmic. Fernando’s work both as a DJ and producer is paradigmatic of an underground movement which mobilises thousands of people every weekend. What people are dancing to in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. 00:00 :: Richard X Crackling basslines, his growing reputation as a booty tracks wizard together with hefty collaborations with the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Kelis, Tiga, and Liberty X, are what launched Richard X to the top of the podium, making him what he is today: one of the big time names of contemporary pop made in the United Kingdom. 01:30 :: Andy Fletcher (Depeche Mode) dj set Keyboard player with the historical Depeche Mode and the godfather of Client, the latest revelation of the new wave of synth-pop, Andy Fletcher will demonstrate that he is not only a good musician but also a magnificent selector when he turns his eye to the eighties. I saw some of his set, which was fantastic - but he was on at the same time as Mills who absolutely rocked it, so I was torn between the two for a couple of hours. Re: (313) Sonar Mixes...
they've been doing these every year since at least 2000. they used to be 4 CD sets for like $19, an amazing deal. Now they're down to two CDs for the same price. I'm pretty sure its all just previously released tracks from artist playing Sonar. At least, that's what the 2000 edition was. i did just get a Sonar update saying that Francois K will be releasing a Live From Sonar CD. If its his set fomr Sonar 2002 then we're all in for a treat. and a great number of Sonar mixes are available here... http://sonar.emisiondigital.com/ingles/ i think only the bigger artist's sets have gotten onto soulseek at this point. I don't know how unknown some of these artist are, but my recommendations are Hellfish- The only breakcore artist in the world that makes yo forget that you're listening to breakcore Mountaineers- Imagine if betaband got all psychedelic country-fied. Gerhard Potuznik- His album may or maynot ever come out on Interdimensional Transmissions, but this guy is Austrian electro mack!!! Dinky- she's just sweet. Damn- i want to go this year! Re: (313) Sonar...
I'll be in Barceloneta from the 4th to the 12th, moving up nearer the CCCB on the 12th for the festival. I'm sure there'll be some sort of 313 meetup whether formal or informal - you can't help but run into each other at the CCCB! The only really good reason to bitch about Sonar is the godawful mausoleum they moved Sonar Noche to from the Pavella de la mar Bella. The Pavella and the beach was a big part of the appeal. Who can forget being out on the patio when the Sun rises over the Mediterranean? (Extra special element for Americans: having the smell of clouds of cheap Hashish waft into your nostrils out on the patio.) Now, as for the lineup ... Sonar tends to be this odd mish-mash of the daytime (and night) IDM with the nighttime Big Name Bangin' DJs. I suspect this reflects the taste of the organizers along with a desire to crowd-please - i.e. the Spanish like their Techno hard and bangin', and nighttime Sonar has served up the goods quite well in that dept. the 3 years I've gone. This has led to Sonar being somewhat narrow-cast in range, as can be seen by the fact that the intersection of Movement/DEMF and Sonar is only Jeff and Rich. Want 313? Want Electro? Want Tech-House? Want ? You won't get it at Sonar. Curiously, for the adventurousness of some of the bookings (I disagree with Ken Odeluga here - I can't wait to see The Soft Pink Truth [half of Matmos], for example), the organizers are playing it far too safe these days and aren't willing to consider anything special or out of the ordinary. For example, it's the 10th anniversary of Sonar - Rich wanted to do a 6-hour closing set at the Sonar Village at the CCCB (4-10) playing a 10-year retrospective. They refused and would only offer him his usual 2-hour banging set at night. G. That would've been kickass. - Greg

Re: (313) Sonar...
I always think the Sonar line-ups are odd, to be honest. Looking at the list below, and leaving aside those car thieves O&N, you might wonder why has-beens Underworld are in there, for example. Or Fat Truckers? Or Darren Price? He's been so low-profile the last few years I thought he'd retired. Then you always seem to get the same old big DJ names playing - Mills, Garnier, Hawtin, Cox, Peterson etc - who although they're all good DJs in their different ways, are hardly going to be much of an event to the people attending. I reckon they all just like the festival so much they're willing to drop their prices to play there every year. But Robert is right, it's the little known acts, along with all the other parties and just the general atmosphere of the festival and the beauty of Barca, that are the best reasons for going. I'd love to go again but once again, lack of funds prevents it. Re: (313) Sonar Festival 2003 dates
my view of sonar was that it was essentially a 'music industry' event as with Midem in Cannes, Popkom in Cologne & WMC in Miami. Not a festival per se like tribal Gathering, Homelands etc. But as with Miami the general public have become involved due to the extra revenue brought in. This helps to explaining (as per the email below) why the events during the day are nice and intimate, showcasing new & old talent, & why during the evening they have the 'big players'. -- Phil Vernol Label Manager Peacefrog Ltd Unit 205 Westbourne Studios 242 Acklam Road London W10 5JJ T: +44 207 575 3045 F: +44 207 575 3047 [EMAIL PROTECTED] > From: "boca_raton" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2003 17:50:29 +0200 > To: <313@hyperreal.org> > Subject: Re: (313) Sonar Festival 2003 dates > > one important thing about sonar: > sonar day is great for hearing new exciting music. > great atmo. great vibes, and small stages make it very intimate. > sonar nite is the other way around alot of people, bad atmo, sound system > which sound too hard. not intimate events at all. > and again the line up in the nite is for me at least boring. > john digweed? carl cox??? one important thing about sonar: sonar day is great for hearing new exciting music. great atmo. great vibes, and small stages make it very intimate. sonar nite is the other way around alot of people, bad atmo, sound system which sound too hard. not intimate events at all. and again the line up in the nite is for me at least boring. john digweed? carl cox??? and you can stop by the beach too :) I was there in 2001, and it was insanely good; despite the fact that everybody who was there complained that the "sonar by night" events were held in a big warehouse, rather than outside on the beach like the years before ! and then, there are so many artists around town, that some of the "off-sonar" events are even more interesting / underground ! it's a must-go ! cyhl Toby Frith wrote: Sonar's main attraction is that it's slap bang in the middle of Barcelona. You can go and see a showcase of Mille Plateaux artists in the afternoon, retire to a tapas bar in the lanes for the evening, and then roll up at 3 am to see Jeff Mills. Re: (313) Sonar Festival 2003 dates
Sonar's main attraction is that it's slap bang in the middle of Barcelona. You can go and see a showcase of Mille Plateaux artists in the afternoon, retire to a tapas bar in the lanes for the evening, and then roll up at 3 am to see Jeff Mills. I didn't go in 2002, but the 2001 line-up was remarkable...so much that if you went to see one stage, it was more often than not the case that you were missing something else equally as good. - Original Message - From: "Anya Stang" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: 26 February 2003 10:50 Subject: Re: (313) Sonar Festival 2003 dates > I've heard only good things about Sonar. > Am thinking of going for the first time. RE: (313) Sonar Festival 2003 dates
I'm definitely going this year. Barcelona looks beautiful - all that trippy Gaudi architecture - great surroundings for an electronic arts and music festival. The booze is cheap too! Does anyone have any clues about the line-up yet? No details on the website yet. -Original Message- From: Anya Stang [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, February 26, 2003 10:51 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Sonar Festival 2003 dates I've heard only good things about Sonar. Maybe this is on a tangent, but what exactly would people consider to be tech-house anyway? My personal impression of Tejada at DEMF was that his sound would fall under that label, this has always been a curious term however. I would be interested to know what sound Mr. Tyreer would consider to be tech-house as opposed to John Tejada's sound, for example. I know there may be some issues with the term tech-house being used rather loosely by certain DJs in the UK that I'm not fully aware of here in the state. In one way, it seems like a lot of Detroit techno records could actually be called tech-house as they do fall somewhere in between techno (esp. in the fullon banging sense of the term) and house. /d {CK} Michael D Tyrer wrote: > Just noticed that @ #1 in the Groovetech Top20 is John Tejada&Arian > Leviste's 'Its Only Music'. > > I thought John Tejada was one of the sets I enjoyed most at Sonar. Re: [313] Sonar/John Tejada
I know there was a whole load of Basic Channel related talk recently, but did anyone who went to Sonar see them play live at Moog last Friday night? - Original Message - From: Michael D Tyrer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: '313' <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, June 21, 2002 2:53 PM Subject: [313] Sonar/John Tejada > Just noticed that @ #1 in the Groovetech Top20 is John Tejada&Arian > Leviste's 'Its Only Music'. > > I thought John Tejada was one of the sets I enjoyed most at Sonar. Re: [313] Sonar meet-up
I think a client just bought me tickets to come to a small town south of Bercelona on thursday, what a coincidence of timing! I will see about staying in Barcelona and might be around for a meet-up. > Hi list, > > I haven't been able to follow closely what's been going on on the list > in the last few weeks so don't shoot me if this is already in my > mailbox a couple of pages down the line: > > Who's at Sonar and who wants to meet up? > > Contact me privately at [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > John, preparing some Technotourism to make up for > 'no-Detroit-this-year' > > http://www.technotourist.org > > > > _ > MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: > http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx > > > - > To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- fix.er \'fik-s*r\ n : one that fixes : as : one that intervenes to enable a person to circumvent the law or obtain a political favor : one that adjusts matters or disputes by negotiation - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] Sonar
I'm also heading over to Sonar this year before going over to Thailand and would like to know of places to stay, eat, etc.. Also, if enough people are going maybe we should all have a little 313 siesta while listening to some detroit escalator company ;) -Pete -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, April 08, 2002 7:55 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Sonar ** Entertainment UK Limited Registered Office: 243 Blyth Road, Hayes, Middlesex UB3 1DN. My g/f & I are looking for an appartment but so far they're either all booked-up or too expensive. Even a link to a good site that we might not know about would be helpful. >> Does anyone know if you can get tickets delivered to the U.K? GG << Gary Last year they did not ship tickets overseas - you have to collect them from the ticket unit outside on the day (1 hour queue) - or you could go over to Barcelona beforehand and get tickets from a ticket agent such as FNAC at the top of La Rambla.
