Why even waste time wondering? There were a fair number of Huh? and WTF? choices rendered. Some were artists worthy of attention, though the choice of track was Huh? yet again. Thanks for the link! The first 4 I'm feeling pretty deep. Nothing else until the 8th clip, which is pretty tough, nice. The 9th one is pretty wonky so you know I'm in on that. RE: (313) Los Hermanos
Yeah, there's definitely something strangely flat and unfinished to it - kind of sounds as though it could have been made on one of those handheld Yamaha synth/sequencer things. Everything is just too raw and plain in the mix, really, to provoke any excitement or draw the listener into it. That said, I *do* prefer it to the last Los Hermanos record, which I was fairly disappointed with. But ultimately it doesn't do much to undermine my suspicion that Los Hermanos has jumped the shark, in a way, since their first two releases... -Original Message- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 27 January 2004 11:44 To: Maxim Sullivan; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Los Hermanos I didn't think much of it either - sounded a bit like a theme tune to a holiday TV programme -Original Message- From: Maxim Sullivan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 27, 2004 11:40 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Los Hermanos Erm, not sure I like it. IMHO the hermanos releases have gradually gone down hill from the first, which I thought was excelllent. Re: (313) Los Hermanos
I've listened to it a few times now off the RA file - I really like the groove it's in and I think it's just a matter of getting used to the sound of the lead instrument. Yeah, it sounds a bit flat but that's the sound of the Flamenco guitar style (or emulated guitar as the case may be). I think come Movement 04 it will be all over the place, like it or not. I'd enjoy hearing remixes/covers of it similar to the Hundred Birds version of Jaguar. Get it to John Arnold and let him have a go at a version. I like it, I'll buy it MEK Maxim Sullivan [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: 313@hyperreal.org com cc: Subject: (313) Los Hermanos 01/27/04 05:33 AM Hi Folks, New lost hermanos you can listen to here!!! http://www.loshermanos.com/ Word Max

Didn't Juan Atkins say in that black to the future interview that Red Planet invented trance? Just because something has a nice string arrangement doesn't mean I'll buy it, BIG F*cking deal, so a lot of you have figured out how to make tracks with stings, pads, and portamento. It's not very hard is it? Let me dust off my old Fuse Dimension Intrusion, and Psyche +8 records from 1993. As far as Los Hermanos it does have a trance quality, it's one of those 60/40 trance/ tech-house tracks which I'm sure like Jaquar will be a real crowed pleaser. That Hiroki Esashika record I mentioned before has a futuristic Infinity, Robert Hood vibe.

I've heard the tracks from $tinkworx's new Keynote 12 as well and they are all superb. He's got that kinda underproduced style that just makes his music feel incredibly funky and raw. I'm also lucky enough to have another EPs worth of tracks that I'm waiting to put out myself and again they are all amazing, with a style that is completley unique to him, and that is quite a rare thing. I didn't sign them because hes a list member I signed them because they are dope tracks! This list helps bring music partnerships and like minded people together for sure, but good music is still good music. That's definitely true - I can't remember if it was Eddie Fowlkes or Kevin Saunderson who said the hardness in techno comes from funk, but I've always seen funk as the main differentiator between Detroit techno and the trance sound. What makes trance unfunky? I think that a large amount of it comes down to the drum programming. Trance producers, I can imagine, must glue over the shuffle button on their drum machines so that it can never be turned on. Also, you can imagine that if a trance producer does anything with the hi-hats other than open hi-hat between each kick drum, closed hi-hat on the beat, he/she would get arrested by the Trance Police for heresy! But even when Detroit records use those most basic of drum patterns, there is still a funk there that you don't find in trance. Why? Brendan
Re: (313) Los hermanos/trancey/Detroit techno...
the way that trance is written accentuates the timing signatures used. typically detroit sequencing rules allow for a bit more timing freedoms, thus more swing to the patterns, which may be what you speak of. you cant pick on a hit on the downbeat tho.. I watch crowds at shows to better understnad what they like in relation to what I like (for my own live sets) and I've seen the crowd visibly and audibly react to the introduction of a hit on the downbeat. I do think that everyone should put their 909s away for 5 years or so tho :) Im pretty sick of *that* open hat. -Joe - Original Message - From: Brendan Nelson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: fabrice Lig [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, December 11, 2002 5:34 AM Subject: RE: (313) Los hermanos/trancey/Detroit techno... | -Original Message- | From: fabrice Lig [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] | Sent: 10 December 2002 22:31 | | I know what is trance music...It was huge here. | Could we try to find a list of differences... | On the paper, finaly there is common points... | Melodies, chords, ... | But in the reality... | I give you the first difference ;-) | 1)Detroit music is funky.

It's all about the 'ghost notes' in drum patterns that fill in the gaps for funk. Also, the way the Bassline works with the beats is key. I've studied dance beats for around 12 years and always wondered how a certain track was swinging so much. To begin with I thought the Hats must be off the beat but after many years gradually realised that you can make a track funky by adding just a simple little shaker or closed hat to a kick and bass line. It's amazing how such small details in a mix can produce grooves whereas if you were to take them out a track could sound very bland indeed. As for Trance, one of the main reasons it doesn't often swing so much is to do with Tempo in my opinion. Trance in the main comes in at around 135-140 bpm. The slower the track, the more space there is to play with in the mix so the ear naturally has time to pick up on the ghost notes etc. Production is also key, getting those levels and compression right also affects the groove. Trance is generally very bright and at times over produced which detracts from the underlying grove. Bergz. RE: (313) Los hermanos/trancey/Detroit techno...
my flatmate listens to some of this 'psy-trance' bizness ... some of it wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt for the perpetual 4x4 - every single tune Ive heard played from this genre has a very 'clean' almost clinical 4x4 beat which imo makes it pretty dull and repetitive and inorganic. One of the things I like about detroit stuff is the variety in the drum programming and the way some tracks have this almost 'underproduced' sound to the drums in that theyre very gritty and dirty - this is often the case with jeff mills stuff I find. Then on the other hand Ive got some richie hawtin stuff which is totally the other end of the spectrum Also it is noticeable the way in which 'detroit' covers so much more than 1 particular style or formula - All you have to do is check through the UR cat to find techno, electro, house and garage !!! peace, Marc -Original Message- From: Jernej Marusic [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 11 December 2002 10:52 To: 'Brendan Nelson'; 'fabrice Lig'; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Los hermanos/trancey/Detroit techno... I was going to try to mae that point about ghost notes and the gaps between the beats being used to inject funkiness, but wasn't able to articulate it as well as you've done below. Here's another thought, although a much more abstract one - an unfunky electronic rhythm goes up and down (ie, the dancer is tempted to just pogo to the track), while a funky electronic rhythm goes round and round (the dancer is tempted to get busy)? And another, more P-Funky, thought - you don't qualify as being on the one just because you have a crash cymbal every four bars! Running through my favourite ten or twenty records this year I see several on Delsin, Rush Hour, Down Low and Emoticon. It's not all that surprising, perhaps: the best music tends to come out of groups of people all contributing ideas and communicating with each other. One of the great things about 313 is that it's facilitated a lot of that. It's seriously reaffirmed *my* faith in any music business, in any case - it can be done on a cottage industry level, and it can be a lot more fun and rewarding doing it that way. And all I do is DJ at friends' parties sometimes. Jonny Oh and i just got a preview of the new $tinkworks on Keynote and it is f**king great. Now i have a lot of his records but this one is definitly the best one i have heard until now... With people like that, you might catch them early on and get them into good Detroit music initially, but if you let them out of your sight for ten minutes they'll be asking HMV staff for recommendations and walking out with a stack of Oakenfold mix CDs, which they'll no doubt get seriously into... as trance music is more accessible for normal people, who don't care enough about music to hunt down individual tracks and start buying loads of anonymous-looking EPs. | there is also the emotional aspect to trance that | appeals to people brought up on rock music... Re: (313) Los hermanos/trancey/Detroit techno...
Personally I think the re-introduction of melody/harmony/song structure into techno recently takes much more influence from old disco and house than trance. Funny this should come up as recently I suggested that Inspiration on UR was very trance like with its big lead line. What I wouldn't want to see is a scene where people are afraid of using these elements because they might be accused of being 'trancey'. Personally I'd rather listen to Jaguar than looped bangers any day. emile

Hey Steven. The people on this list who make music are nice people. And It is not like we hype each other's stuff up. We are just encouraging each other and that is a good thing. I buy Marsel's Delsin releases, and Fabrice's records and Jason Brunton and Otto's records. There are a lot of talented people on this list. known and unknown. One thing is for sure, we support each other and that is a good thing when you think about some of the past history of electronic music and all the back stabbing and sh*t talking people do to each other. You can really help this list out more by doing record reviews of your favorite records at the moment or giving your thoughts on something techno or 313 related. Re: (313) Los hermanos/trancey/Detroit techno...
I don't think you'll have any disagreements as to the quality of artist and labels that participate on the 313 list but to say the best techno is coming out of the 313 list community is in my opinion a bit of a stretch. For example, you say you dj at friends parties and yet more notable UK techno dj's like Dave Clarke who draw tens of thousands of fans at any given night have Detroit techno listed in his Top 10's (go to his web site) not even mentioned on 313. on 12/11/02 6:22 AM, Jonny McIntosh at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm with KJ. I can see the one track Quetzal being called trance (that is trance with a little t) but I don't think it's cheesy at all. Sure it's really smooth but what the hell is wrong with that? It's a beautiful trance track like Model 500's Starlight. Just too bad that the word trance has been hijacked by a bunch of people who just clearly *don't know* i.e. Oakenfold, Sasha Digweed, Timo Maas, and all those other people who have given up soul and feeling (or never had it in the first place) for a fat pocketbook and their picture on the cover of magazines with the title Ibiza's most popular DJ. Me, I really love the new site! Easy to use, nothing fancy and nothing crashable, just good info with cool links - and I love the intro. i'm really starting to dislike these submerge previews. that just let us hear the opening build of the track. that can't be all the record does. if it is all that the record does, than this is a sad state of affairs. how about letting us hear the good parts? RE: [313] Los Hermanos
actually, i was talking with the submerge crew the other day, and they specifically told me that they left out the good parts just because they know you get frustrated and the virtual tease they give you. they honestly had a dry erase board with the words TEASE JOSH GLAZER written in big black marker. underneath was Mike Banks' signature. and then (and this is the BEST part) there was a recipe for chili con carne on the desk. just so you know he has you in mind when placing the audio clips up. i'm just looking out for you. vote quimby. and five bucks says state makes it to at least the quarterfinals. anyone want to bet me? msg privately. martha stewart -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 12, 2002 1:13 PM To: rob webb Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Los Hermanos i'm really starting to dislike these submerge previews. that just let us hear the opening build of the track. that can't be all the record does. if it is all that the record does, than this is a sad state of affairs. how about letting us hear the good parts? [EMAIL PROTECTED]: i'm really starting to dislike these submerge previews. that must be terrible for you. i'm sorry... i'll take a moment to consider your pain. i hope it's not taken the shine off your day. say, Mike, Genesis, do you see what you've done? that just let us hear the opening build of the track. look, it's a preview. nothing more, nothing less. it's supposed to whet your appetite. it's a teaser... a taste of things to come. that can't be all the record does. probably yeah. i'd imagine that it's 6 to 6 1/2 minutes, perhaps even 7 minutes, of that 30 second clip fading-in and then fading-out again. it's Submerge's take on the recent looped bangers (copyright: r pinning) fad. the secret's in the transition between the fading-out and fading-in you know. if it is all that the record does, than this is a sad state of affairs. hmm, i think we've been here before haven't we? you weren't so keen on the preview of Inspiration either were you? ahh well, your loss. how about letting us hear the good parts? why don't you drop Submerge an email and suggest that they let you hear the good parts? i'm sure they'd appreciate some constructive comments tendered in private. rob _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

oh i forgot- you have to worship all things detroit to be on this list. twice this month i have eagerly gone to the submerge website to hear a new release preview. and both times, i got these uninspiring lo-quality blurbs. here's an idea. why not play 3 different 10 sec parts of the track? just like you would if you were previewing a track at the store. then we could really get an idea what the track is all about. isn't that the point of a preview. although i suppose mike banks could fart into a microphone and you'd call it brilliant. Re: [313] Los Hermanos
Jesus I can't believe how pointlessly nitpicking these comments are! Guys like Submerge have been tirelessly putting out great music for years and all you can do is moan about the samples one or two months before the tracks are even due out! I run a label and personally choose to put longer samples on the site, once the records are available, but you want to keep an element of surprise for when these things drop. I'm sure if you wanted you could spend a week visiting every other label's site and complain similarly about many more. Nobodys asking you to shell out cash right now on the back of these samples (although I have and should be getting the white labels next week:), but if they wet your appetite and build excitement to hearing more nearer the release date then what is the problem? And as for the quality of the samples, well not everyone has high speed connections and there still aren't many sites that record soundfiles for more than a 56k modem where you are bound to lose a lot of quality. I'm personally just glad that Submerge are making more of an effort these days with thier site redesign and mail outs to open thier sound up to more people. Come on, theres been more than enough crap spoken recently, lets get back to some sensible discussion and constructive comments.
