ASBURY PARK  City Board of Education President Robert DiSanto has 
fired off a letter to City Councilman James Keady criticizing him for 
visiting Asbury Park High School classes Oct. 27 without the 
permission of Acting Superintendent Kathy McDavid following the fatal 
shooting of 18-year-old Tylik Pugh.

But Keady, who wanted to hear the students' concerns about gun 
violence and other deep-seated problems following the Oct. 18 
shooting, released e-mails Wednesday that showed he had the 
permission of the high school principal, Linda Palumbo, to meet with 
the students. Furthermore, Keady said that when he arrived at the 
school that Friday, he was given a schedule of classes to follow.

It wasn't like Jim Keady just popped up and showed up for classes, 
Keady said Wednesday. I had a printed-out schedule for my day.

In his Nov. 3 letter, DiSanto said he had told Keady he must have 
permission from the superintendent and was to make arrangements 
through her. He said Keady chose to ignore this protocol and 
interrupted our classes regardless.

Councilman Keady, I must ask you why you are getting involved in our 
schools without proper protocol and respect for our superintendent 
and her administration, or for the Asbury Park Board of 
Education?DiSanto wrote.

Keady's e-mails show that teacher Lauren Golden, who had encouraged 
city officials to get involved with the schools, made the 
arrangements and e-mailed him on Oct. 25: I spoke to the principal, 
Dr. (Linda) Palumbo. She said it is fine for you to come in. . . .

Keady said that perhaps there was a slight potential misstep when 
he did not call McDavid directly but said he assumed  the 
dministration had approved his visit.

I'm under the assumption if the principal OK'd this, everything's 
fine, he said.

Keady said he obtained valuable information from the students.

I thought, and still do think, that the solutions lie with them, he 
said.

McDavid said Wednesday she had no recollection of talking to Palumbo 
about Keady's visit.

The city's Urban Enterprise Zone Board recently sent Keady a letter 
asking him to resign and leave town for telling a New York City 
television station that the word on the street was that there are 200 
members of the Bloods gang in the city

 
 



Seems like the people upset with Jim is getting to be a pretty 
 diverse group.  Can they all be wrong?

Glad you asked. Firstly, I read the article. Seems like he is in the 
clear and had permission. If the schools did not internally follow 
protocol, well.

Greater wrongs have been done by public officials in AP and there 
has been NO outcry from anyone except the appointed naysayers. 
Groups like the UEZ, etc., have remained mute while councilmembers 
have lied in print and public meetings. Said nothing while accepted 
redevelopment plans were ignored and voided. I could go on. All who 
drink at the trough of City Hall put their hands over their 
collective mouths, eyes and ears because it was deemed the greater 
good by their masters.

Don't think I do not know how far the influence of Loffredo and 
Bruno goes in this city. You yourself don't say what you know is 
wrong in public because of it, although you have said it at times in 
private (BTW, I expect your GUMBA article to be here today if not in 
TCN).

Keady was considered a great guy by many as he spoke against eminent 
domain, tried to save buildings and to get Partners to move their 
asses.

What went wrong? Well, he started to speak about serving the poor, 
the downtrodden. The claims against Keady have been posted right 
here all along. A diverse group - those against him politically - 
and others, such as those with real estate interests - brokers, 
agents, owners, etc., join opinion with you that he will make this 
city nothing but soup kitchens and homeless shelters if he had his 
way. Weren't those your words?

That is his crime. The fear is that he will keep this town down and 
reduce our property values. Didn't Allan come right out and say that?

And so, you get people who have influence on official boards to join 
the fray. Doesn't matter what the facts are, as along as there is an 
opportunity to criticize him. It is clear that the powers that be, 
both inside and outside of City Hall, want Keady gone.

Keady's announcement of what he is doing in his official capacity is 
interpreted as grandstanding instead of being accepted as it is 
given - fulfilling his obligation to keep his constituents apprised.

He is proactive. Thank God. The group that has mobilized against him 
are a bunch of cheerleaders. Everything is show,parades, fireworks, 
faux landings of lost explorers,etc. Tom, next Columbus Day take 
your show to Howell. Let yourkids participate there where they live 
and go to school.

I won't criticize the School Board because I don't know everything 
and I know there are good people in it. But reading about events 
over the past few years and the ongoing performance of the schools, 
I would say that Bob DiSanto and the board have their hands full. 
There is plenty of blame to go around concerning the schools. They 
should be addressing more important matters than Keady visiting the 
school. It all seems a bit heavy-handed and a coincidence on the 
heels of the UEZ letter.

I would say that all of our councilman and mayor, and city manager, 
should have considered visiting the school in the wake of the 
shootings. But I don't think I would want Bruno talking to my kids.

It is time for people to wake up. Keady is not going to do anything 
to reduce our property values. They are more in danger of declining 
due to the potential failure of the redevelopment and Partners 
continual postponement of the waterfront restoration.

A lot of people (real estate people) made a lot of money in this 
town over the past few years. I see their hand in this. Shame on you 
all.

he talked to the kids. Big f'in deal. How many times is it more 
interesting to hear someone else then the same droll from a teacher. 
Kind of like career day. There was noting more interesting in college 
then having an adjunct vs a career professor. Put down those books 
and let me tell you how it is...then read your book.

Hey I jumped on Jim a few years back for being well read. 

He is learning the facts of life of those that live it everyday, not 
running from it. 

So I took a couple guys around AP the other day to look at homes etc. 
Spent 6 hours with them. I gave them the real tour. We discussed the 
shootings, crime, redevelopment, the lack of offices (day workers for 
commercial day traffic), lack of parking, the impact of new 
developments on existing home prices and condos, the recongized Allan 
and Suzi having a shop around the corner from them in NYC, Springwood 
Ave, the Sewer plant on the Ocean, eminent domain, JErsey gardens, 
the metropolitan and on. So know theya re focusing on the east side.

Given all the facts (sales history, development,risks,comps) they are 
looking at AP and comparing to long branch and other shore towns 
before they plunk down a million on one or more homes or a commercial 
project.

I also told them to read this board and tom's column in thr tri for 
entertainment.

Shouldn't the major issue of the moment be moving AP in a better direction, 
fighting 
crime, getting the redevelopment under control and paying attention to the west 
side...not

I think I read Keady said, and I'm paraphrasing here, that 
children/youth/students are part of the solution to the problems faced 
by Asbury Park.

He is trying to involve the kids in the future of Asbury Park.  He is 
trying to give the kids a feeling of worth, and a voice.

How better to let the kids know that the adults care about them and 
their opinions (read: respect) than to tell 'em so?  If the kids 
develop a feeling of self worth and self respect... who knows how 
Asbury can benefit?

We are having a fundraiser for the Asbury Park PAL Boxing Program.

The venue will be announced soon (we're on hold with the Berkeley; 
not sure if they can be opened by then so we might move the 
fundraiser elsewhere).

The boxing program will start in February.

LOOKING FOR HELP - Academic Tutors:

Participation in the program requires the students to do well in 
school.  If their grades are slipping, we don't just cut them 
loose.  They still come to the gym, but instead of training they 
meet with an academic tutor until their grades rise.  As a reward 
they get to train again.

If anyone is interested in volunteering as an academic tutor, please 
call me.

To me, the slamming of JK was already waiting in the wings, and his detractors

whole shooting mess to push their agenda.

ASBURY PARK: Lt. Edwin Torres of the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission will be the featured speaker at a special town meeting to discuss gangs, violence and drugs at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Salvation Army, 605 Asbury Ave.
The meeting is sponsored by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Asbury Park Community Justice Advisory Board. Lawson June, chairman of the advisory board, said about 100 people attended the first town meeting after the group formed in 2005. For more information, call (732) 988-3269 or (732) 775-5246.

Jersey, the seven artists showcased in a new photography show at Union 
County College feel the pull of this often-maligned state. 

For each of the photographers whose works are featured in Site 
Specific, NJ, the show on view at the college's Tomasulo Gallery, one 
region, one town  sometimes even one structure  became compelling 
subject matter. From the state's more obviously photogenic subjects, 
like the decaying Asbury Park amusements depicted in haunting black-and-
white photographs by Andrzej Jerzy Lech, to the more elusive, like Tom 
Sullens's streaked flight patterns at Newark Airport, the work on 
display is meant to look beyond the stereotypes of New Jersey, said

requires most things you ask for to be copied and given to you 
immediately.  There are time schedules for other things.  If they 
don't meet the time frames there is a special board set up with the 
State to which you can register a complaint. If you win (any you 
will win), you are awarded attorney fees.

I do have sources too.  Many of them.  None as good as Joe D was.

Can't reveal my source on the DiSanto letter. Other news sources 
have it.

You are in 9/11 conspiracy theory territory if you think I'm in 
contact with Bruno and Loffredo very often. I almost never talk to 
either one of them.

Jack I tried talking to him.  He called my house repeatedly.  He 
sent me an email accusing me of ducking his calls (sorry but I was 
busy at the moment).

When I called him back he dropped F-Bombs, called me names, etc. and 
the next day his wife emailed me and called me names.

You suggest to me this is a guy open to discussion?

It isn't because of me he is losing the faith of so many.  It's

Jack I tried talking to him.  He called my house repeatedly.  He 
sent me an email accusing me of ducking his calls (sorry but I was 
busy at the moment).

When I called him back he dropped F-Bombs, called me names, etc. and 
the next day his wife emailed me and called me names.

You suggest to me this is a guy open to discussion?

It isn't because of me he is losing the faith of so many.  It's 
because of how he treats people.

This is the heart of the matter Dan.

If you look at the whole picture, Asbury Park over the years has 
done enough.

We were the dumping grounds for Marlboro hospital.  

We were the ones who allowed our housing stock to go mutifamily to 
help the poor.  

We are the ones who built federally subsidized housing to house the 
poor. 

We are the ones that take in more section 8 than any other town in 
the county.

We are the ones suffering the segregated High School so we alone 
have to educate the poor to the exclusion of the rest of the County.

We are ones to house the County's methodone clinic.

We are the base for the Salvation Army.

We are the home of interfaith neighbors.

In fact, I understand there are over 80 non-profits helping the 
poor, and heard someone say once that non-profits helping the poor 
is Asbury Park's largest industry.

We are the ones with 39 churches all helping the poor. 

We are the ones who allowed homeless people to sleep at City Hall, 
even attracting homeless from other towns.

We are the ones perpetually trying more initiatives to help the poor.

All of that goodwill, YET EVERYTIME THERE IS A MORAL OBLIGATION TO 
HELP SOMEONE ELSE, EVERYONE LOOKS TO ASBURY PARK TO SHOULDER THE 
LOAD!

The town with the most limited resources is tapped to handle the 
county and state's pressing social problems.

When Father Bob wanted to build the Center, he was pastor of a 
church with srawling, open acres in Wayside.  Not in his backyard - 
he built it here.

Now comes the Market Street Mission to bring us more of the poor to 
help.

Not one other town in Monmouth County does a fraction of what we do 
for the poor.  Yet when a new challenge comes, they look at us and 
start holding moral obligation over our heads.  

Where is the moral obligatins of the other 51 towns in the county?  
How dare anyone, EVER look at the people if Asbury Park and inquire 
whether they will step up to help the poor.  Go ask the other 51 
towns if they will, for once, help the poor instead of Asbury Park.

Now comes Jim Keady.  He marches into the place that is weary from 
helping the poor, and starts preaching to us that we have to do 
more. 

That is why he comes off as so arrogant.  We've done all that and he 
rides past the other 51 Monmouth towns to take us to task for not 
doing enough?  It's insulting.

If someone like you Dan comes into the middle of an argument between 
me and Jim Keady, and see's Jim saying do more for the poor and me 
disagreeing with him, it is easy to paint him as the good guy and me 
as the bad.

That of course is intellectually lazy, because knowing all the facts 
above leads to the conclusion that Jim Keady is going to give us the 
straw that breaks the camel's back, while I want to (long overdue) 
strengthen the camel.

If poverty is our problem, we shouldn't expand poverty here. We need 
a bigger base of middle class and (finally, hopefully) some upper 
class.

Let Jim Keady fight for the poor in some other town that isn't doing 
anything for the poor.  

I'd support him.

I have asked directly about the gang comment. He said he was unable to cite sources do to the nature of how the information was gathered. From his response I was lead to believe that this was a situation he was working on with others howevere these otheres were not law enforcement. I stressed how his information provided no comfort and should be in the hands of the local police and county officials.

 done enough.
 
 We were the dumping grounds for Marlboro hospital.  
 
 We were the ones who allowed our housing stock to go mutifamily to 
 help the poor.  
 
 We are the ones who built federally subsidized housing to house the 
 poor. 
 
 We are the ones that take in more section 8 than any other town in 
 the county.
 
 We are the ones suffering the segregated High School so we alone 
 have to educate the poor to the exclusion of the rest of the County.
 
 We are ones to house the County's methodone clinic.
 
 We are the base for the Salvation Army.
 
 We are the home of interfaith neighbors.
 
 In fact, I understand there are over 80 non-profits helping the 
 poor, and heard someone say once that non-profits helping the poor 
 is Asbury Park's largest industry.
 
 We are the ones with 39 churches all helping the poor. 
 
 We are the ones who allowed homeless people to sleep at City Hall, 
 even attracting homeless from other towns.
 
 We are the ones perpetually trying more initiatives to help the 
poor.
 
 All of that goodwill, YET EVERYTIME THERE IS A MORAL OBLIGATION TO 
 HELP SOMEONE ELSE, EVERYONE LOOKS TO ASBURY PARK TO SHOULDER THE 
 LOAD!
 
 The town with the most limited resources is tapped to handle the 
 county and state's pressing social problems.
 
 When Father Bob wanted to build the Center, he was pastor of a 
 church with srawling, open acres in Wayside.  Not in his backyard - 
 he built it here.

 Not one other town in Monmouth County does a fraction of what we do 
 for the poor.  Yet when a new challenge comes, they look at us and 
 start holding moral obligation over our heads.  
 
 Where is the moral obligatins of the other 51 towns in the county?  
 How dare anyone, EVER look at the people if Asbury Park and inquire 
 whether they will step up to help the poor.  Go ask the other 51 
 towns if they will, for once, help the poor instead of Asbury Park.
 
 Now comes Jim Keady.  He marches into the place that is weary from 
 helping the poor, and starts preaching to us that we have to do 
 more.

Well, I must admit that some pretty valid points were written.
I'd like to ask this though...couldn't Asbury serve both it's legacy
of poor and unfortunate people at the same time as the people here
now, and the people Asbury hopes to attract?
Other cities do this, although most are larger then AP. Cities like
Portland OR. Hoboken does a pretty good job of balancing the classes.
Can't something be learned from those places? And, is it right to
vilefy Jim Keady just because he wants to help people?

[AsburyPark] Beating Up A Good man

I am really dissapointed with you all in Asbury for beating up a good 
man.

Jim Keady, at least is trying to make a difference.  His recent visit 
to the School was with permission of the Principal.  The politicos in 
town are worried about Jim gaining too much popularity which shows me 
they have a lot to be worried about.

I think the only problem with Mr. Keady at this time, is thathe is 
struggling to be a very peaceful person in a hellish situation.  I 
for one would slam him on his apologetics style of response to his 
political adversaries.

Jim remember that Jesus used a switch: to clear the money changers 
from the outer court.

I am planning on filing up www.asburyparkvideo with a daily 5 
minute Brown Report Online  Look for it soon!  For now check out 
the www.longbranchlive.com version of these reports on Long Branch.

You never, never are able to back up your claims. You use the 
tactics of McCarthy. You are a fear mongerer. The nation just voted 
out your buddies, and if we could - throw out the President - for 
the same thing. Preying on people's fear with lies and distortion. 
You and the others doing this should be ashamed of yourselves. It's

Keady supporters eventually are left with the argument that he Wants 
to help.

Two guys defusing a bomb both want to help.  The guy that cuts the 
red wire saves us all, but the guy who cuts the blue wire kills us

No one is attacking him as a human being.  His problem is one of 
policy, which I detailed earlier today.

Thanks for bringing it up.  I have done so on the County level and 
continue to do so (on the state level too).  I will be successful.

I talked about it on the Radio last week.  I talked about it in 
front of Jim Keady at Holy Spirit Church.  I talked about it at my 
fundraiser last week. I'm actively lobbying for it and am trying to 
do more.

The people I have to fight with to get the money for Asbury Park is 
radical environmentalists, who are controlling that money - hundreds 
of millions of dollars each year.

Caring, want to help  enlightened, tolerant liberals in the 
environmental movemnet, and they are hurting Asbury Park, the 
poorest City in the County.  Bet I'm the only one not surprised.

Bet I'm the only one not just talking about having the state and 
county share the burdens of Asbury Park, I'm actively trying to do 
somehting about it.

Now go play basketball with Jim Keady.

Jack, if you check the archives you'll notice that justified left this
group in the spring and returned on October 13. His first post: "Keady Resignation Demand Today I called

And then the tenor of posts got hotterand as you say now ugly.

Compare the posts here during his hiatus. A much more civil tone
here, though not always agreeable.

front of Jim Keady at Holy Spirit Church. I talked about it at my
fundraiser last week. I'm actively lobbying for it and am trying to do
more. The people I have to fight with to get the money for
Asbury Park is radical environmentalists, who are controlling that
money - hundreds of millions of dollars each year.
Caring, "want to help" enlightened, tolerant liberals in the
environmental movemnet, and they are hurting Asbury Park, the poorest
City in the County. Bet I'm the only one not surprised. Bet I'm
the only one not just talking about having the state and county share
the burdens of Asbury Park, I'm actively trying to do somehting about

[AsburyPark] School Board Letter

Well, I finally read the letter. I also read the emails between JK 
and school officials.

NOW I know what this is REALLY about. The world is full of little 
fiefdoms, isn't it?

The real crux of the matter is identified in the final paragraphs of 
the letter to Keady. I quote:

I especially found it disturbing that you felt the need to publicly 
come out in the news against our Superintendent and Board of 
Education regarding the closing of schools after the shooting in our 
city. I do not beleive Mr. Keady that you were aware of the facts 
and reasons for the decision to close the schools or the people 
involved in that decision.

Perhaps you can help us by refusing to publicly comment on School 
issues that you obviously don't have a clue about or know why 
certain decisions are made.

Well, that's the real reason for this letter in a large part no? 
Because Keady had the audacity to say something critical about the 
closing of the schools. He was not alone was he? And what did he 
say? I recall that he said something to the effect that if there was 
fear of retaliation it would be easier for the police to protect 5 
schools rather than an entire city with its numerous blocks.

Consider the emails between Keady and school officials.

10/23 JK emails Lauren Golden, a teacher at APHS with interest in 
visiting the school and speaking to students. School board members, 
the APEA (Asbury Park Education Association) President AND DiSanto 
are copied on the email.

10/23 APEA President responds to JK Thank you for the heads up.  Do 
you want any of us to attend?

10/23 Golden responds to JK that she would help facilitate a visit 
to APHS. I think the kids would welcome and value speaking with a 
city leader. I am thrilled you are coming. In addition she offers 
various options of how to handle the visit.

10/23 JK responds to Golden as to which option he thinks works best. 
APEA President is copied on email.

10/24 DiSanto repsponds to JK hanks for including me in on your 
plans on visiting the High School. Please clear this through our 
Acting Superintendent, Kathy McDavid, and let her make the necessary 
arrangements with the High School Administration. We have Crisis 
Intervention teams in our schools and we don't want to disrupt their 
process and we don't want to interupt the student's classes. I will 
forward your e-mail to Ms. McDavid,  so she is aware of your 
intentions. McDavid, Golden, APEA President and school board member 
copied on email.

10/24 JK responds to DiSanto I received the email below from 
Lauren.  I told her that option 3 sounded good to me.  However I am 
willing to defer to whatever the Board/Central office feels will be 
most beneficial and appropriate. McDavid, APEA President and school 
board member copied on email.

10/25 Golden emails JK I spoke to the principal, Dr. Palumbo. She 
said it is fine for you to come in. I have begun speaking to 
teachers. ... How long would you like to visit each class for? The 
class periods are about 40 minutes each. 

10/25 JK responds I would be willing to visit each class for the 
full 40 minutes.  You give me the schedule and I will be there.

10/25 Golden responds Fantastic! I will set everything up and email 
you with the schedule tomorrow. 

End of story. If anything, miscommunication. I understand the Board 
is getting defensive these days. It overreacted, just like the UEZ. 
JK has become the communal punching bag lately.

JK copied the Board president and Superintendent deferring to their 
wishes and the next emails he gets are from the teacher setting 
things up. Much Ado About Nothing. Never believe everything you 
read. Always get the facts. You will never get all of those from 
Tommy. He only gives the facts he wants you to have. Shame on you

[AsburyPark] City Gives Away Triangle - Developer to Build Luxury Units on Site

Only in AP. Well, I am not letting this go. I'm on NJDEP to make 
sure the state tidelands claims are paid for.

More Residential Units Planned for City's North End

The northeast corner of Asbury Park would be transformed into an 
upscale gateway under plans Asbury Partners unveiled recently at the 
Planning Board.

The city's lead developer won subdivision approvals from the board 
to erect a multi-unit residential structure on a half-acre triangle 
at Ocean Avenue and Deal Lake Drive, and to lay groundwork to build 
perhaps 18 beachfront town houses on Ocean Avenue north of the 
sewerage treatment plant.


The design for the triangle venture has not been completed so it 
remains to be seen how many units there could be or their 
configuration. 

Robert Curley the project's engineer, said the tract would contain 
an 18,580-square foot footprint, but he could not say how tall the 
building or buildings would be. It could be up to eight stories tall 
based on redevelopment rules, he said.

The board granted approvals to make the triangle a bit smaller by 
adding property to a road that splits the triangle from Asbury 
Towers to the south and by creating sidewalks and streetscaping on 
the north side. The road, an extension of Deal Lake Drive to Ocean 
Avenue would be called Bradley Street and be one way.

The board also approved reconfiguring Ocean Avenue north of the 
treatment plant to widen it for parking and access to Asbury Towers 
and the plant.

It would also allow Asbury Partners to construct up to 26,236 square 
feet of townhouses that, according to the site plan map, appear to 
be single-family units.

Asbury Partners will have to win site plan approval for construction.

Board member Matthew Berman called the triangle an important 
location and said he hopes Asbury Partners creates an attractive 
proposal. The company's lawyer, Alfred Faialla called the tract a 
difficult site at best.

It's going to be difficult to build but we'll try to make it 
beautiful.

The board will determine how many units it would contain.

[AsburyPark] Special Glasses

In Lowes the other day I noticed they were selling glasses - sort of 
like the old 3-D ones we wore in movies. When you put them on it makes 
the Xmas lights sparkle. I wonder if they can come up with special 
glasses to see through all of the bullshit in this town.

great job of investigative reporting and getting the facts before, 
printing b.s., too bad the press didnt do it, i believe someone owes 
keady an apology, and im not talking about nancy, how about disanto, 
maybe hes trying to protect his fiedom, bd elections are right around 
the corner, by going after keady, anyone with a brain will see thru 
this and get rid of his cronies up for reelection , again thank you for

Somehow I find myself still supporting both the school 
board and Keady. 

While that might seem like "Double Think," I read all the email 
exchanges as honest disagreement among the officials involved, and all seem to 
have the best interests of the students as motivation.

But the exploitation of those disagreements in 
sensationalized columns is a different ball of wax.

What's private? We don't have the luxury of being published in the 
local papers. Smell the coffee roasting - there's a tight lid around 
here on what gets printed. I tried many times to take what I have 
posted here to the press. I only work in facts. That's my training and 
what I get paid for. Build a case with facts and present those facts. I 
have presented things to the press of import to this City. No go. Why?

I don't disagree with you in toto. I do not doubt for one moment 
that the BOE, including DiSanto, have the best interests of the 
children in mind and act accordingly in their view. You can disagree 
with their decisions but I think you are correct.

However, that being said, I still think that Keady's criticism of 
the closure of the schools played a major part in sending the letter 
otherwise the mention of it would not have been part of DiSanto's 
letter. That's my opinion and I think it has a basis. I rememeber 
one of my college courses - The Short Story. The professor said that 
it was the mos diffcult forms of literature (to write). An author, 
he said, has an unlimited choice of words to use - thus, the words 
that make it into the story are intentional.

 But the exploitation of those disagreements in  sensationalized 
columns is a 
 different ball of wax.   So Shame on you  DeSeno.

Amen. It is worse when you can ascertain that Tommy got the letter 
before it was generally available. You see who should just have the 
letter by who it was copied to. Tell me no one has an axe to grind?

As a Pallone supporter, I was taken aback by last week's column excerpted

From past experience, I was made suspicious by two short sentences: "To

recorded." I wondered why "a" reporter was not 
named. I wondered where "It was recorded."

So I Googled. Nothing!

Rather than go down that fool's path once more of trying to get a straight

If the quote is accurate, then shame on Pallone and just a minor criticism

In what town would a rubuke of a council member by a board of 
education member not be news?

I've seen hundreds of posts by you about John Jimmy and Kevin.  
People may disagree, but know one says you shouldn't post it.

So a few bad ones about Jim Keady get printed and Jack wants to quit.

it looks like the casino demolation will be taking place anyday now. i was just over that way today. they are removing the copper roofings over the bow windows, and a few copper panales from around the windows.

Tom's (I have no axe to grind) version of reporting.

After the recent shootings, our zany left winger apparently wanted to 
hold some hippie hug fest with the kids so he can show the world he 
cares more than the rest of us (so he's a grief counselor now? Boy he 
really is impressive).  Either that or he wants to spread his own 
curriculum - you know - like tell the kids Christopher Columbus beat up

[AsburyPark] Gumba

Dear Asbury Park UEZ and Paramount Theater,

As you may know I have been a proponent of ridding our nation of the 
last socially acceptable stereotype in Hollywood: The caricature of 
the Italian-American as either a conniving, cold killer who runs 
organized crime, or a grammatically-challenged dimwit who works for 
the guy who runs organized crime.

Prior to the movie The Godfather, Hollywood was balanced in their 
portrayal of mobsters in various ethnicities.  Pretty Boy Floyd, 
Baby Face Nelson, Dutch Shultz, Bonnie and Clyde, Meyer Lansky and 
Bugsy Segal were all in movies, and none were Italian (they were 
also real people, unlike Vito Corleone or Tony Soprano).

Since the move The Godfather, more than 400 feature length films 
have been made where mobsters are just Italian.  That list grows, 
and it doesn't include the larger number of TV show, radio and 
commercial Italian false caricatures.

I note the UEZ passed along an advertisement by Paramount Theater 
for Gumba Night.  I hoped it had something to do with Gumby or 
Chicken Gumbo.  I was saddened to find it was a misspelling of the 
word Goombah and used to describe a night of double feature 
Godfather movies (although I was happy to see that someone other 
than an Italian at Paramount Theater had proved the universality of 
the struggle with grammar).

Goombah to Italians originally meant friend (although I must say, 
it's rarely ever used.  I've never walked into Jimmy's Restaurant 
and yelled Hey Goombah!).  However, it's in far more prevalent use 
today as a slur (even among Italians), conjuring up the stereotype 
described above.

I know I am a long way from convincing people to frown on the 
showing of The Godfather as they would today frown upon the showing 
of the once popular Steppin' Fetchit movies (but I'm working on it). 
Accordingly, I will not ask that Paramount not show it or the UEZ 
not promote it.

However, Goombah Night is objectionable by today's standards. It 
sounds like an event.  I attend prideful events like the Italian 
American Festival, Italian American Heritage Festival and the 
Columbus Landing.  

How am I expected to attend a Goombah event?  Shall I appear 
casually in my velour running suit, zipper pulled down to the top of 
my beer belly exposing my gold chains and just enough sprinkling of 
powdered sugar in my chest hair to confirm I've eaten my 6th 
sfogliatelle of the day?  Or should I come retro in trench coat, 
tilted fedora and violin case?  If that image is too scary, I'll 
just put on my vest, grind my organ and let my monkey dance for 
quarters.

I know the UEZ has received an objection from another Italian 
American gentleman, and I'm fully aware that much of his was 
intended as a sarcastic swipe at me for my recent strong disapproval 
of Councilman Keady's attack on Columbus Day and our heritage. 

That gentleman was not insulted by what Mr. Keady did and his 
insinuation that Italians needed a defense against Keady in his 
recent communiqué is disingenuous. He makes fun of that tradition 
and the costumes worn at the Columbus Landing, costumes worn by 
several of my family members over the years.  His recent 
communication is in furtherance of the Keady-inspired attack by 
outsiders on the Asbury Park heritage and traditions held so dear by 
our indigenous people.

His sarcasm is an attempt to insult me despite knowing how offended 
I was by Mr. Keady's actions. I doubt he'd be so cruel toward 
another ethnicity, which confirms how vigorously I must defend the 
Italian American reputation. If, Heaven forbid, that same gentleman 
should ever find his fate in the hands of 12 jurors who think Tony 
Soprano is a peek at the Italian Genome, he will wish he had taken 
these matters more seriously too. 

I am further aware that this individual's true intent is to see me, 
a City supporter, oppose the City on any issue as he often does, 
since he is a City non-supporter.  I'll grant him this one wish.  

I must first highlight a difference.  My point has always been that 
Hollywood's bigoted Italian caricature is so prolific that it 
infects the psyche of America, so that most people will not 
recognize something like the word Goombah as a slur when in fact 
it is. The slur is masked so that people using it do not realize the 
slur, as was the case here with Paramount and the UEZ.

On the other hand, Councilman Keady's attack on our Columbus Day 
tradition comes from him after he studied the issue and thought 
about it (evidenced by the condescending reading of one of his 
Marxist books to the people of Asbury Park from the dais).  By 
reading phony books to us, attacking our heroes and questioning the 
Italian American community's parenting skills (by saying we were 
lying to our kids about Columbus), Councilman Keady's actions were 
quite intentional and far worse than Paramount's failure to 
understand the word Goombah as a slur, thanks to Hollywood.

If the principal, who is
the educational leader of her school and responsible for the management
and safety of her school allows a councilman into her school, then it
seems ok by me. I also think that the students seeing a councilman
taking the time to come and visit and ask them their concerns and quell
their fears is also a positive thing. Any information gathered by the
councilman can only serve as a positive that can be shared with his
fellow council members and help to implement policy that can hopefully
prevent such an unfortunate incident from reoccurring.

 It's going to be difficult to build but we'll try to make it 
 beautiful.


Difficult to build on 18,000 sq ft. Guess he should head back up to 
newark on look around or NYC. The beachfront homes should be a no-go. 
NOTHING was ever to be built EAST of the boardwalk line, if continued 
north.

Why not just close off ocean ave coming in from Loch Arbor and hadn it 
over. The main enterance to AP would be Norwood Avewhat's worthless 
piece of cracked up road worth $1 or $2? 

They are gaining more land by reconfiguring the roads. Same by the 
casino. Same along Ocean Ave. Couple extra feet here and there and you 
have an extra 100,000 sq ft of space.

I guess I am too stupid to understand the last line right? You 
aren't serious? WHO are the indigenous people of Asbury Park? 
Perhaps you mean the Sand Hill band which includes people from 
Cherokee and Lenni Lenape tribes? Or did the Italians get here first?

How about you insult the indigenous people by dressing your kids up 
as if it were Halloween. I can't say the same for Loffredo because 
John looks marvelous in a doublet. 

 His sarcasm is an attempt to insult me despite knowing how 
offended 
 I was by Mr. Keady's actions. I doubt he'd be so cruel toward 
 another ethnicity, which confirms how vigorously I must defend the 
 Italian American reputation. If, Heaven forbid, that same 
gentleman 
 should ever find his fate in the hands of 12 jurors who think Tony 
 Soprano is a peek at the Italian Genome, he will wish he had taken 
 these matters more seriously too. 

Aw come on Tom, you know any self-respecting Italian would buy the 
jury.
(That was only to get your goat and teach you that you should have

You got it Dave. Simple geometry. The area of a triangle increases 
greatly by just pushing out the sides a little. However, they are not 
building anything east of the boardwalk line. Remember they are 
rebuiling a meandering boardwalk. It is going to be difficult because I 
will be all over it. They have to pay the state for the value of the 
property. I am in touch with the appraisal supervisor. If it worth 
nothing to us it should be worth nothing to anyone. You know what that 
parcel is really worth.

I guess we both ruined ours.

You made clear before Gumba that you were on the Keady side of the 
Columbus holiday.

Yet in your letter you brought up the defense of the controversy as 
if it were needed.  That wasn't a swipe at me? You made fun of the 
costumes (as you do again). You talked of the rioting in OT.  Not a 
swipe at me from the prior posts?  Don't answer -  I know it was.

I would have left you out of mine if you had left me out of yours.

As for my kids dressing as Indians, that's to honor them, just as 
the Order of the Arrow does.

What if we all did it your way and never dressed in Indian garb 
again.  That way, no one would remember what their culture looked 
like.

While were at it, let's make sure the Order of the Arrow doesn't 
perform their dances in public, so everyone can forget that too.

While we are at it, let's not honor them with sport team names - we 
really do need to get all reference and symbolism of them out of our 
lives.

In fact, lets change the names of places from Wannamassa to Ohio, so 
we can forget them completely.

On second thought, I'm going to disagree with you Dan.  Indian 
culture seems worth remembering and honoring to me.  I'll still 
dress my kids as Indians on Columbus day (Thanksgiving too) so I can 
make sure the gerneration I'm raising never forgets them, and they 
can pass it along to subsequent generations.

On Martin Luther King day I sit my kids down and read to them parts 
of his writings.  You ever done that?

For your other suggestion of what I can do with my kids, you can go 
to Hell.  Go directly to Hell.  Do not pass go, and do not collect 
$200.00.

But Ocean Ave is west of the boardwalk. I am just being exact in 
response to Oak's post. The townhouses, in the preliminary plan a few 
years ago shows the houses backing up to the BW at the rear of the 
homes. These will be tantamount to beach front properties. What did we 
get - $490K for the whole parcel. That's real good real estate dealing 
on the part of our council majority. Giveaway no matter how you cut it. 
I could beat the tidelands claim and sell the parcel for well over $10 
million.
