The team is OFFICIALLY a CNJ Group 1 dynasty

I didn't miss a home game this year, got to 1 away game. I have watched their
games since they won the first one with Coach Don, and I didn't think this
years team would do it, but man did they look crisp against a good Florence team

I think we all agree that Asbury Park is a city in transition and that many
improvements are needed on a number of fronts. But some times we get so
focused on which restaurants are opening and closing, crime, the parking
issues, the city government, etc, that we miss little news stories that
highlight some of the good things that happen in town. On Saturday, Asbury
Park High's football team beat Florence 42-18 to win the Group 1 championship
 – our team may be smaller than most others it plays against and usually
outnumbered, but the heart, soul, and passion of this team is incredible (it
was especially touching to see the kids holding up the photo of John Key –
their coach who was killed earlier this season – out of love and respect for
someone who tried to make a difference with these kids). Our city can be
proud of kids like Corey who turned it around in the classroom and made a

Yeah, I had parts stolen off my bike a few years ago. Last night, a neighbor of
mine who constantly makes the mistake of locking her bike to a telephone pole
also had her front wheel stolen, and it's her only transportation.
What can be done about this? Obviously parents aren't wondering where their
kids are getting all of their bikes and bike parts.
Maybe the city should require everybody to register their bikes, just like they
do with dog licenses. If a kid is caught riding a bike without a sticker,
impound it. If it's found to be stolen, arrest the little shit heads.

Doesn't it all come back to inattentive parenting? If you kid has 10 bikes in
their backyard and you don't question you child about it, then something is
wrong. I see boys riding girls bikes and big kids riding bikes that are way to
small for them all the time. One time when I was working at Second Life Bikes,
and kid came in with a bike freshly painted with black spray paint. I asked him
where he got it. He said it was sitting on the curb, so he just took it. I told
him that a spray painted bike is a tell-tale sign of it being stolen. He acted
nervous and would not look me in the eye. Repeat that over and over in our
city. Parents are casting a blind eye to their kids unlawful behavior.

I don't think it's wrong to be critical of the way the system was
implemented. This is a system, which people have shown quite a bit of
confusion in using - one that had at least one local town (Belmar)
eliminate the system for that very reason. The meters also run a good
5 hours longer than any of the nearby towns.

I think those two points are definitely worth discussing and debating.

The lots will not be free but MM cannot charge to park there until
they recieve COs. The city asked MM to open them up free in the
interim to help the parking situation. Some of you are too critical
even when the city tries to do something good. Damend ifyou do and
damned if you don't. The parking meters are good for this city. The
implementation was not perfect. People hate change. They will learn to
use the system. Parking is never free. There is always a cost. Time

Belmar actually tried a parking meter system like that a year or two but
removed it in favor of the old system of one meter per space because too
many people complained about not understanding where they should be
paying for their spot.

New signs would definitely be helpful as there are areas where you
really have to look quite a distance to find the machine to pay.

The city failed with this parking system on so many different levels.
First off, they should've waited till next summer, or until more of the
renovation is
complete.
Secondly, it's confusing people left and right. And if you park too far away
from the
machines, and don't know that you have to pay to park, and didn't note the
space number,
you have to walk all the way back to your car. Strike 2.
Finally, there is no communication between the city and MM, because MM has free
lots at
the SP, Casino and the Wonder Bar. People seems to be parking in those, rather
then use
the pay spaces. I'd do the same thing. Nobody is watching those lots.
This is already generating lots of brand new bad publicity for our city. It
should. If you get
a $26 ticket because the system is confusing, you are gonna tell all your
friends about it.
I think the city should cancel all of those tickets that were issued and fix
things.

Based on your report of the closed shops tonight, I doubt they'll be any

I'll go out on a limb here - the STUPIDEST thing MM can do is to NOT put the
(a) carousel
back in the Casino.

I hope they do put it back.

I predict that the Casino Carousel House will be turned into a food
court...a replica (wink, wink) of the one at Monmouth Mall.

(Hey isn't that one supposed to be an interpretation of the 'Real'
Casino Carousel House right here in AP ???)

I think the boardwalk idea at Monmouth mall was based off of AP. There
intended to be a carousel in the center food court area. accross from what is
now Old Navy? You can see the round shape on the floor, and the circular
support system above it. It was designed for it... but i think time showed it
would be a waste to add it.

I'd like to see a carousel in the Corousel House again, but i don't think
its possable at this point. Look at the direction the boardwalk is going
in I don't think it would fit in with the stuff planned for the boardwalk.
Times can change though, who knows! I doubt it though...
I was sitting behind members of MM at a previous counsil meeting. A
frequent towns person wondered over and began asking questions about amusments
and other boardwalk attractions (like the water park he had heard of as being
part of MM's plan). Their answer to his questions was no..

You need a reason, other then for a sit down $30 pp affair. Not that people
won't come for
that buttake a look at a carnival trailer midway with cotton candy, popcorn
and soda. Bring
me the $. That and a ride like a carousel next to it.

I see your point about the Freehold Mall... But i guess Monmouth Mall
didn't see as a draw or people, otherwise why would have wente through and
built it. They've had quite a few years between now and when the boardwalk
additions were added on. Ah, who knows!
Carnival rides, cotton candy, and others are good attractions. However,
it's kind of obvious that isn't the image the boardwalk is going for. Like it
or hate it, that appears to be what's going on!

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Chamber Names Carousel Awards

2008-02-21 Thread charlie
I have the feeling MM is not planning to cater to a boardwalk filled with
children. When they first showed their plans in City Council there was nothing
for children except a candy store with walls of candy. They did not mention the
water park that was proposed in the app. MM in my opinion is gearing the
boardwalk to the people they will need to fill the Condos that will be built on
Ocean Ave. The Condos being built are for couples with no children.

Exactly. I wish it were different. Do you really picture a boardwalk
filled teens and screaming kids, while there are million dollar condos only
feet away on the other side of Ocean ave? I highly doubt it. But again, we
will have to wait and see what happens.
As the post up top mentions, MM didn't mention anything about a water
park really. They said they had ideas for it, but i'm guessing it's nothing
major or else they would have had it ready. Maybe it wasn't mentioned beasue
it's not part of the summer 08'?

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Chamber Names Carousel Awards

2008-02-21 Thread charlie
These are just thoughts, i have no idea if they're true. Maybe the
freehold mall has their double decker carousel becasue they can afford it?
Does the Freehold Mall bring in a large profit? From the area, and the
percentage of high end stores, i'm guesing yes. It may have been an
attraction, something done becasue they could afford to do it. Weather it
makes money or it doesn't, it brings in people. But that could only have been
done becasue the mall in general brings in enough extra money.
Maybe Monmouth doesn't do well enough to spend on such an attraction.
One that may not give back much.

Chris,

Madison Market had a great pic of the paramount restoration, with the
interior scaffolding still in place. Mostly gold tones. It was at their site
or
on a press release. Can't find it anymore, but I think I did send it to

The city can't ever maintain their own website. Visitors will only find dead
links for Special Events, Places of Interest, Beech Cam, Downtown Cam and so
much more. Poor source of information for people interested in Asbury Park.

It's an almost decent assessment, but the photos, definitely should be
replaced! No doubt! I think the Council, should place their own
comments, don't you? The piece doesn't do Asbury enough justice,
IMHO! I saw a jewel, no, the Pearl, I envision, when I talk about AP!
I was impressed to no end, with all of the activity and beauty, I
surveyed. I am never one, to talk to strangers, and I found myself,
talking to anyone, who would listen! People were smiling, enjoying
the ocean, the boards; everything. I was happy as all get out and
sorry, I hadn't taken advantage of the beautiful place, we call home,
before! Yeah, yeah, I know, we aren't THERE, yet, but you have to
crawl, before you walk, as my dad, always said! There are REAL
possibilities here! Now, if we could just get those cameras! Me, who
is a civil libertarian, stating this! I must be getting old!

 1. Just some observations I've made recently. Reuters reports that
Wikipedia is now the top online news and information destination,
according to Nielsen//NetRatings . Online encyclopedia Wikipedia has
added about 20 million unique monthly visitors in the past year. In May,
Wikipedia had 46.8 million unique visitors, up 72 percent from June
2006, NetRatings said. Wikipedia also has finished on top of the news
and information category every month this year -- ranking ahead of
Landmark Communications' Weather Channel site by an increasing margin --
topping out with a disparity of about 10 million visitors in May.

 2. As I understand it, the rank of results at Google is based on what
sites users are visiting. Right now, a search for Asbury Park
will show Wikipedia ranked as number 3 or 4 out of approximately
 2,000,000 hits.

Crumbling, dilapidated, vacant these are all used in the captions

doesn't talk about a decline and, instead, focuses on redevelopment.
What are the views on this? The photos seem to suggest one point of view
(that Asbury Park's a piece of crap [pardon the French]) and the article

I'm hoping (suggesting) that the powers that be* have some
content and images that more accurately reflect our progress at this

recently published many terrific images (E.g., Paramount Theater
renovations, the new Hobo's, parades, et al.) They show us in a more
positive light than what you'll see there now: the old
 Beirut-by-the- Sea stuff.

It is not very difficult to edit a Wikipedia article or comment on the

The success of the site is partly attributed to the fact that info without
citations are labeled as so, and therefore, suspect. Of course the site would
have to be monitored, just as this board is for misinformation. Considering
the high traffic the site receives now, it could be a very valuable PR tool
for the city. High Schools and colleges are now clamping down on students
using Wiki for research, just as in the old days we were not permitted to
use
encyclopedias as sources.

If we all collaborated and reached consensus, the entry would remain intact.
They now have all sorts of safeguards in place.

Can't see why the city or developers wouldn't want to look into it -- all
free PR. As it stands now, with some of those pictures , can't see why anyone
would follow up if he or she were thinking of buying here.

BTW: Way back when, when I objected to a legend about the fighter Max in
Hitler's Germany, I submitted the additional info from the NYT letter to the
editor. My addition was thoroughly scrutinized and then made permanent by
those who watch over that entry.

The tricky thing is, the process by which Wikipedia usually, eventually gets
things right — the notion that mistakes in a given entry, whether
intentional or unintentional, will ultimately be caught and repaired as a
function of
the project’s massive, egalitarian oversight — doesn’t seem as if it would
work when people are looking for information about events unfolding in real
time. How on earth can anyone be trusted to get the story right when any
version
of the story is only as accurate, or even as serious, as the last anonymous
person to log on and rewrite it?
Nothing is easier than taking shots at Wikipedia, and its many mistakes (most
often instances of deliberate vandalism) are schadenfreude’s most renewable
resource. But given the chaotic way in which it works, the truly remarkable
thing about Wikipedia as a news site is that it works as well as it does.

At what point did this person recollect the announcer saying Get up

When Reidy told me the plan, it sounded great. A center lane with a 5
MPH speed limit. Anyone operating outside of these guidelines would
be enforced. What's the problem? Especially since roads were not
condusive to cycling, particularly with ocean view. The other thing
that bothers me is that if Kinmon was willing to go out on a limb and
tell me I'd not have a problem with rentals; it would not have been
difficult for the city to alter ordinance to allow commercial bikes;
considering I had valid mercantile license. As for you, Fred, you do
realize that my Shop only opened to the boardwalk, right? Shouldn't
someone have at least suggested I open in a different location due to
the potential issues?

When I lived in LA, tons and
tons of people shared the Strand every single day without incident
because they knew,
because of lines, that bikes and rollerbladers go here, and walkers
go there. We have the

As for enforcing the rules, I had many varying encounters with
riding my bike on the
boardwalk. In the beginning of the summer, I did it all the time,
and there were definitely
cops present, and nobody told me to stop. Then, toward the end of
the summer, I got
kicked off once, and like a good citizen I followed the rules. Next
thing i knew, I was the

others riding on the

Also, one thing that amazed me is that many times, the boardwalk
was nearly deserted, so
here's a rule that keeps people from riding on a deserted
boardwalk. What is that? Even
nobody else is there, you can't go there either. Absurd.
As for Rita, I was at a council meeting where she began bashing

Welcome to bicycle friendly Asbury Park. What BS.

Kill two birds with one stone. In regard to Fred's post too.

You miss the point. It is not that he was intentionally screwed, or
should be babysat by the city. Here was a guy putting his money on
the line ONLY after assurances from the city. Even if they were not
assurances per se, what happens? Bruno's scooter gets knocked over by
kids on bikes. Instead of working to make sure that people are
allowed to ride either within resticted hours or a bike lane is made
either on the bw or ocean ave, he is told he can't rent his bikes.
Okay, ocean was being rebuilt. It's okay now. Give the guy free rent
for this season in whole or part. When they opened the casino
passageway it was like a dam being opened. People came from the south
right onto the bw. Many on bikes. It could have been worked out in a
way that was safe for bikes and pedestrians. But what happens?
Another person who invested in AP walks away with a sour taste in his
mouth. It can't always be everyone else's fault besides the city and
Partners. That's how you and Fred have it.

Overall observation from a realist

It is not just 'rich' people who are driving people out of Asbury and it
has nothing to do with race, but it is how a true 'free market' works. It
happens to elderly and middle class families too, but guess what - they have to
move and have little or no gov't assistance for relocation, jobs, rent or
housing discounts, etc.. Look at townsall over the US where prices

move.

I can't afford oceanside real estate and neither can most middle class
Americans, so why should being poor allowanyone those rights.

Let the economy determinerents, housing prices and everything else

your right, there is a difference between the

done on the boardwalk is only for a few years, untill
a final renovation is done (for anyone out there who

I am sure I was not the only one who left feeling

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Readies For Busy Summer Season

2005-05-28 Thread Lighty

there is no mention of it on the sign on main, and i didnt see
anything in the loacal papers about it. This seems to be the norm
for city sponsored (im not sure that who is sponsoring it) events
down on the waterfront. I think a little more attention to PR and
marketing for these types of events would help immensely.

I think it was mentioned in the Asbury Park Press on Friday (weekend
section). I was told about the concerts a few months back and promised a
press release once the schedule was set. That release never came. I did
add all of the events to the event calendar at AsburyMusic.com yesterday so
if you want to see the summer schedule it is available there as well as the
Convention Hall website.

They are great at sending out press releases for things like the
installation of new lights on the boardwalk, but when it comes to promoting
events they hardly ever send anything out.

As for promotion, well... Let's just say that there are places who have been
offering advertising for practically nothing and they refuse to take them up
on the offer. When an popular act like Billy Idol fails to sell enough
tickets for a concert on Memorial Day weekend you know that they aren't
doing promotion well.

thanks for the asking the question i was hoping would be asked. It
allows this topic to be brought up without hearing, 'the election's
over..why is this still a topic?'

I, for one, might consider suing (if i was a person of litigious
nature) because they seem to have been negligent in making sure that
the developer's agreement is being held to as intended. If the city
was on top of making sure restoration and safety came first (and maybe
question these anti-newtonian timlines the MD has seemed to concocted)
the casino would certainly be in better shape by now. And frankly, if
they gave a crap, they would MAKE as sure that people wouldn't be
walking through that death trap as well as they seem to be making sure
people arent hitting the sand without beach badges.

I think having the casino open is an important part of generating BW
traffic (people certainly arent going to hop in their car and to come
from the south if they are at the beach in OG, but will readily
continue their stroll northward through the casino), and hate the fact
that it is closed, but the reality is that someone has to intercede to
make sure the injury and litigation does not ensue. The last thing AP
needs is the setback of bad press related to the perception
that 'camden by the sea' is still an appropriate euphemism for AP.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: asbury park - fishman

Dan: Charlie has made those same arguments for 4 years. They've been refuted
a thousand times. JerseyJohn did an accounting of all the developers that have
tried to get in here. It's quite a number. Unfortunately despite all the
facts that make those same arguments untenable, Charlie and the City Council
(except perhaps Hamilton) still think the same things. It's no use. People
who don't want to face facts won't.
