check out 'Alessandro'. They are pretty much repackaged Grado's, but
comparing characteristics look like you can get SR-125 equivalent for
the price of SR-60.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Break-in period for Transporter?

2009-05-16 Thread slimkid

Well, exactly my feeling when I got an external DAC to 'improve' the
sound of SB3. All those internet ravings and no difference that I could
hear. Gave it some time, hoping that somewhere somehow sometimes I'll
hear the difference. Never happened, so I sold the DAC, and the hit I
took on price is considered as a price of the experience and the
education.

And that brak-in common thing. It's not a wisdom, it's an audiophilia
legend.

most likely that your DAC can not oversample (properly) the sample rate
SB is passing. Happened to me with different DAC. Would oversample
44.1, but not 48 (in other words, it would work fine with SB3, but not
with DVD player playing DVDs and will oversample fine with DVD player
playing CDs). Was there some kind of clock upgrade done on the DAC?

With audio, if less jitter gives me 'tighter' bass the the original or

Perhaps you could share your expertise on exactly how one would go about
doing a DBT, or a SBT or ABx for that matter, test on a powersupply for
a SB/Duet? Due to the transitory nature of aural memory, for a valid
test, one would need to switch the supplies within about 3 seconds,
 without turning the SB/Duet off.

Its quite interesting that inevitably the shibboleth of DBT is allways
invoked by folks who've never actually done a valid one, or an invalid
 one for that matter.

No, I haven't done a DBT test in over 30 yrs; its frankly not worth it
to me, to switch via a computer controlled relay driven by a recording
pseudo random binary generator, even if were possible to do so. But I
do valid SBT and ABx all the time in developing my power condioners,
because you can bypass them and then take them out of the circuit
completely via switches without dropping power. Its an very useful
 tool.

I've no issues with properly implemented blind testing. It would be
nice if other posters had actually done any (I might well have missed
them) and shared their experiences, rather than reflexively
 invoking that tired shibboleth.

So, with all that experience that you have, it didn't cross your mind
to use two duets, one with switching and another one with linear supply
and stick them into the same preamp.

I'm not an expert at all in any of this, but if somebody tried to sell
me something that doubles the price of the original product, I'd expect
them to somehow show me that it works. DBT might not be worth it to you
- quite contrary, but to me, as a paying consumer, it certainly is.

Very good point. I went with the external DAC ($400, just info for
people who put value to that kind of info), and if it was only to sound
difference, I would not have bothered. Even when I think there's some,
I'm pretty positive I would not be able to get it in DBT. However, with
the DAC I got:

- variable output controlled by analog pot. (enables me to bypass
preamp and that makes the biggest difference in SQ IMNSHO)
- good headphone amp
- DAC to connect projector to the system (somewhat specific)

Imaging is primarily function of speakers (their mid and high

Doing a blind test between my 50watt Denon 275 and the 80watt NAD 352
was certainly reveaving. I think that the NAD 372 is going to be a bit
overkill for my setup and room dimensions, but I was very impressed with
the sound of the NADs. I'd be interested in any other SB owners with
positive or negative experiences with the 352.

I have 352 running a set of Magnepans (86 Db sensitivity, 4 Ohms)
without any trouble. It's good work horse, lots of current, NAD is
pretty conservative with their ratings. I seldom go over 9:30 on the
volume knob. Decent sound too.

I'm not going to state that all amps sound the same, but I have
compared it to 372 and the only difference was that I achieved desired
volume level earlier (8:30), which is not good actually, since there's
less granularity in selecting the volume level within optimal range.
372 can be bridged into 250W mono if that's what one needs.

Both 352 and 372 have lots of inputs including tape in/out, preamp out
and main amp in separated. Additional AC out, controlled by the main
switch.

352 has 2 good features, tone control with tone control defeat (bypass
that is) and anti clipping circuitry.

The only thing that I don't like about 352 is a fact that volume knob
has hardly visible marker, so it's hard to tell where it is (it's motor
driven by the remote).

And, fringe benefit, 352 comes with very good remote which is way
better than the original one that comes with the SB. So, when used with
the SB, it reacts faster, more reliably and has plenty of buttons (meant
to control CD player and tuner) to re-program.

As always, trust your ears, but 352 is an excellent product for the
money.

Oh, with great pleasure.

I'm not going for second to pretend that I know how esoteric and
expensive analog equipment out there sounds, but from the prospective
of somebody who, 30 years ago, had access to average gramophone and
reasonably well preserved records, I can attest that there's no way one
can compare the experiences of listening to the classical music.

I mean, c'm on, be realistic. Half of classical stuff out there (intro
to Mozart's requiem, for example) has such dynamic range that the
record on the average equipment simply can't bring it up. One
constantly needs to ride the volume button, bring it high for silent
parts and then try to distinguish between music and cracks, pops and
shs, then make sure to turn it back down before speakers clip in
FFF part. Alternatively, music sounds like it suddently starts and
stops off and on, where ppp parts are simply missing.

Strictly, from the prospective of being able to properly hear most of
the live recording of the classical performances, I'll take $50 DVD
player over most of the turntables I heard. CD does it for me.

And, while I'm runnning to grab my flamesuit, yes, I'm avare that $50
CD player has defficiences, mostly in dynamic response; in my
experience, the differences among various concert halls and among
various conductors and their renderings of certain pieces are way more
significant than that.

Now, back to the issue, obviously such EQ would have to be implemented

Yes, but it still has a few drawbacks:
- takes too much resources (there goes the idea of using an old PC to
do it).

- does not have an easy off/on switch. To take it down, one needs to
change file settings on server. The way around is to bring bands to 0
and that still attenuates by 6 (or so DBs) and still uses PC resources.

- Can not be used on the album by album or track by track bases (the
way winamp works). I don't wont to do the whole room correction filter
generation, but rather to adjust certain recordings that I feel don't
sound right. It shouldn't be to difficult to make it to remember
setting for the particular track or album.

I probably don't see the whole picture here but I really don't get it
what a big deal is. As mentioned in the prior post, every software
player around has it and it doesn't seem to take any additional
resources. Why would it be different on SS?

Besides a remote, it's not clear whether audio outputs are fixed or

audio input be passed out through balanced outputs? Lots of unknowns
that might decide if it makes a cut for a preamp.

However, if somebody finds this concept interesting, than, you might
want to know that CityPulse 7.2x has those features (+remote, volume

In my experience, if one wants to go with the external DAC, than it's
worth exploring the possibility to delete the preamp.

Right on the money. Besides the term 'musical', I also don't understand

well known musical examples to demonstrate, rather than using one word
to describe other.

And, just in case that the language bareer gets in the way, this is not

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Buying A DAC and comparing with a SB3 and a Dony CD Changer

2008-01-03 Thread slimkid

honest answer based on some personal experiences and what I found around
on the net: SB built-in DAC is rather good (or rather standard if you
like) one, and buying comparably priced DAC to use it with SB3 would
mostly be a vaste of money, unless it has some other features you need.
I can't talk for more expensive ones (like Benchmark or Lavry), but in
sub $1000 range there won't be much difference (if any) in sound ...
And, remember that the sound of the DAC isn't entirely defined by its
chip.

At least, don't pay the money before you have a chance to listen to it
and compare (preferably in BT). Make sure they are level matched.

The most benefit I got with the external DAC was not direct sound
improvement over SB bulit in, but the ability to go directly into the
power amp, bypassing the preamp.

Wireless problems aren't usually related to bandwidth, but to the
ability to deliver constant and uninterrupted signal. I have given it

However, when it works, the sound quality is exactly the same. Of

One thing to keep in mind is that SB's analog signal level is slightly
lower than most (I had a chance to compare) CD players, and that would
lead to the exact impressions you are having. Also, audio memory is
quite short for the type of comaprison you are trying to make.

In my experience (BT), SB analog out is quite good and it won't be
significantly improved with sub $1000 DAC. One thing to try in you

your 640A, by-passing its internal preamp. I think you'd be pleasantly

My biggest complain when it comes to the built in DAC in SB is sound
if cimbals and kick drum when massaged with brushes. There's lot of
that kind of activity in slow jazz, female vocals (Diana Krall) e.t.c.
To me (and to my wife to even greater degree) that sounds more like an
annoying static than like brushed kick drum. Combined with slowely
kicked cimbal at the same time, it becomes rather unlistenable digital
noise. Did anybody have a chance to compare that to the output of some

would be a better way to spend $7500 on music equipment?

I listen to a lot of reggae, jazz, soul, some hip hop, some rock,

Any advice or thoughts greatly appreciated!

I'm assuming you already did your homework, listened to bunch of setups

sure you use some hardware attenuation.

If you didn't ... well, for the kind of money you intend to spend, I'd
plan on two months of extensive audioning. And if you are going to do

Maybe a different prospective. Since I'm pretty much convinced that the
speakers are defining factor in the overall system sound, and you are
fixed on RS6, why not start with the basic SB3 - any amp $1000 range
- MA RS6. Given your choice of speakers you might find that no DAC is
necessary to make them give you all they have and that same may be true
for the amp (unless you can get Creek for way less than its retail

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SqueezeBox + computer + QUAD 12L Active + DAC

2007-05-10 Thread slimkid

Hi,

If I'm getting this right, then you have confused the concepts of
computer soundcard and Squeezebox.

Generally, you use either one or another. If you use SB, then the
quality of the sound coming from it has nothing to do with your
computer soundcard. You can also connect the soundcard directly to your
amp/active speakers, completely bypassing the SB. In either case, it
would be going from the analog output of SB or soundcard into analog
input of the amp/active speakers.

For the detailed instructions and thorough clarification of the concept
of SB, check out Wiki and other numerous posts in beginner and general
forums.

If you throw the DAC into the combination, it would be to replace
either SB's or soundcard's internal DAC with (hopefully) better one.
SB3 and most of better soundcards have digital outputs (optical or
coaxial) that will go into the external DAC. From there, it's directly
into the analog input of the amp or active speakers.

But just wait a little. Once you hear SB, you'll know whether you
want/need better DAC. Same, but even stronger, can be said for the
upgrades to SB. Wait until you get familiar with the SB (and looks like
you have a lot to learn and play with) and then see for yourself if you
need to upgrade it.

Triangle bookshelf speakers. When I told him I wanted bass, he

 making the jump.

I heard the combination of NAD320/Triangle Heliade. Wasn't impressed at
all. Sounds sweet on less demanding music, but once things get going
(like symph. orch. in full swing), turns into a mess - I think the
speakers are to blame.

May I suggest Dali Ikon 6 instead - comes from similar school, similar
price class (likely to be found where ever Triangle is found), would
work very nice with NAD/Cambridge and way cleaner sound.

because they choose to use Black Sabbath as a test track. Don't heavy
metal fans get a vote too? Personally I couldn't give a stuff how a
system sounds with jazz or classical - if it doesn't reproduce dark
electro and industrial music with clarity, depth, power and aggression
then it's no good to me. Plaintive cries about how smooth, relaxed or
refined it is will fall (metaphorically speaking) on deaf ears -
choosing music to suit the equipment is the tail wagging the dog.

Fair enough, and I didn't mean to start a war on music tastes. And,
certainly, if I was into the listening the crickets in the fields, I
would have chosen the gear that presents them in the best possible way.

However, this is supposed to be unbiased comaprison of the high
level/priced components. Everybody (who is into the music) knows how
the piano, bass, human voice or any natural recordable sound sounds. So
we know the criteria when it comes to judging the performance of the
piece of gear. I don't know how the electric guitar in Black Sabbath
(or Pink Floyd) really sounds and neither do you. So, we both can
choose the gear that we like best. And likely, they would be different.
But we can't credibly claim that one is better than the other only
because we like it better in presenting our preffered type of music.

So, my point in choosing the type of music in such tests is, since we
are testing High Fidelity gear, we have to have a criterion - fidely to
what.

Again, no hard feelings towards metal fans :)

The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will
improve. DVD performance will also increase substantially.

Of course you can know how an electric guitar sounds in a real acoustic.
You just have to consider the amplifier as part of the instrument.
Musicians certainly do - guitarists put as much care into the choice of
amp as of guitar. There are plently of web sites out there discussing
the sounds of guitar amps, and how they change with different brands of
 tubes.

Of course you're right ... in '50s or '60s of the last century.
However, we are talking Black Sabbath here. Now, try to remember when
was it last time you saw heavy metal band playing on the Stratocaster
plugged in directly into Mashall/Fender tube amp. Likelier, there will
be like 20-ish different gadgets in the signal path before it even
reaches the amp if it even goes there rather than directly into the
mixer. And the real fun is just starting there.

And it's not true that all music gets significantly processed. It would
be a cold day in hell before Mr. Karajan lets some sound engineer boost
and then clipp highs in his rendetion of Mozart's requiem :)

The fact that somebody would use Black Sabbath to do any kind of audio
comparison seriously undermines their credibility.

Comparing S/PDIF and wireless without even mentioning the source of
S/PDIF probably means that they are confused between computer
networking and using digital soundcard output.

This review simply doesn't tell me anything about the intended
equipment.

Hey, I'm pretty much of an audio objectivist, so I share your
skepticism. However, I cannot categorically rule out that someone
might be able to hear a difference on some system. An ABX test would
 be pretty enlightening. :-P

How dare you, sir, ask people to prove their points. They don't owe
anything to you. :)

I'd tend to agree with this idea very much. Transporter is very high
level source, and it would be an overkill for the rest of your system.
You didn't mention your speakers, but I'd assume they are on par with
the receiver, quality wise. Go with the squeezebox, and then you'll
have a choce to compare its analog vs. digital through the receiver and
stick to what you like better. Especially, if your receiver doesn't have
analog pass through, then feature where the bigest improvement in
transporter is, its DAC, will be useless to you.

As far as computer goes, what you have is enough. Get some more disk
space, maybe another 512M of memory and go FLAC. Performance would be
more dependent on the ability of your network
