Well, exactly my feeling when I got an external DAC to 'improve' the sound of SB3. All those internet ravings and no difference that I could hear. Gave it some time, hoping that somewhere somehow sometimes I'll hear the difference. Never happened, so I sold the DAC, and the hit I took on price is considered as a price of the experience and the education. And that brak-in common thing. most likely that your DAC can not oversample (properly) the sample rate SB is passing. Happened to me with different DAC. Would oversample 44.1, but not 48 (in other words, it would work fine with SB3, but not with DVD player playing DVDs and will oversample fine with DVD player playing CDs). Due to the transitory nature of aural memory, for a valid test, one would need to switch the supplies within about 3 seconds, without turning the SB/Duet off. Its quite interesting that inevitably the shibboleth of DBT is allways invoked by folks who've never actually done a valid one, or an invalid one for that matter. No, I haven't done a DBT test in over 30 yrs; its frankly not worth it to me, to switch via a computer controlled relay driven by a recording pseudo random binary generator, even if were possible to do so. But I do valid SBT and ABx all the time in developing my power condioners, because you can bypass them and then take them out of the circuit completely via switches without dropping power. Its an very useful tool. I've no issues with properly implemented blind testing. It would be nice if other posters had actually done any (I might well have missed them) and shared their experiences, rather than reflexively invoking that tired shibboleth. So, with all that experience that you have, it didn't cross your mind to use two duets, one with switching and another one with linear supply and stick them into the same preamp. I'm not an expert at all in any of this, but if somebody tried to sell me something that doubles the price of the original product, I'd expect them to somehow show me that it works. DBT might not be worth it to you - quite contrary, but to me, as a paying consumer, it certainly is. I think that the NAD 372 is going to be a bit overkill for my setup and room dimensions, but I was very impressed with the sound of the NADs. I'd be interested in any other SB owners with positive or negative experiences with the 352. I have 352 running a set of Magnepans (86 Db sensitivity, 4 Ohms) without any trouble. It's good work horse, lots of current, NAD is pretty conservative with their ratings. I seldom go over 9:30 on the volume knob. Decent sound too. I'm not going to state that all amps sound the same, but I have compared it to 372 and the only difference was that I achieved desired volume level earlier (8:30), which is not good actually, since there's less granularity in selecting the volume level within optimal range. 372 can be bridged into 250W mono if that's what one needs. Both 352 and 372 have lots of inputs including tape in/out, preamp out and main amp in separated. Additional AC out, controlled by the main switch. 352 has 2 good features, tone control with tone control defeat (bypass that is) and anti clipping circuitry. The only thing that I don't like about 352 is a fact that volume knob has hardly visible marker, so it's hard to tell where it is (it's motor driven by the remote). And, fringe benefit, 352 comes with very good remote which is way better than the original one that comes with the SB. So, when used with the SB, it reacts faster, more reliably and has plenty of buttons (meant to control CD player and tuner) to re-program. If anyone has any suggestions for improvements hop onto forum.inguzaudio.com Darren Yes, but it still has a few drawbacks: - takes too much resources (there goes the idea of using an old PC to do it). - does not have an easy off/on switch. To take it down, one needs to change file settings on server. The way around is to bring bands to 0 and that still attenuates by 6 (or so DBs) and still uses PC resources. - Can not be used on the album by album or track by track bases (the way winamp works). honest answer based on some personal experiences and what I found around on the net: SB built-in DAC is rather good (or rather standard if you like) one, and buying comparably priced DAC to use it with SB3 would mostly be a vaste of money, unless it has some other features you need. I can't talk for more expensive ones (like Benchmark or Lavry), but in sub $1000 range there won't be much difference (if any) in sound ... And, remember that the sound of the DAC isn't entirely defined by its chip. At least, don't pay the money before you have a chance to listen to it and compare (preferably in BT). Make sure they are level matched. The most benefit I got with the external DAC was not direct sound improvement over SB bulit in, but the ability to go directly into the power amp, bypassing the preamp. -- slimkid The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will improve. Very interesting topic, especially since my experience is that room accoustic/speaker placement influences the sound much more than some other things. Now, question for north Americans (because of the specific way how our homes are warmed up); Do you think that your systems sound differently during the heating season? Do dry and warmer air influence the sound in any detectable way? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SqueezeBox + computer + QUAD 12L Active + DAC
Hi, If I'm getting this right, then you have confused the concepts of computer soundcard and Squeezebox. Generally, you use either one or another. If you use SB, then the quality of the sound coming from it has nothing to do with your computer soundcard. You can also connect the soundcard directly to your amp/active speakers, completely bypassing the SB. In either case, it would be going from the analog output of SB or soundcard into analog input of the amp/active speakers. For the detailed instructions and thorough clarification of the concept of SB, check out Wiki and other numerous posts in beginner and general forums. If you throw the DAC into the combination, it would be to replace either SB's or soundcard's internal DAC with (hopefully) better one. SB3 and most of better soundcards have digital outputs (optical or coaxial) that will go into the external DAC. From there, it's directly into the analog input of the amp or active speakers. But just wait a little. Once you hear SB, you'll know whether you want/need better DAC. Same, but even stronger, can be said for the upgrades to SB. Wait until you get familiar with the SB (and looks like you have a lot to learn and play with) and then see for yourself if you need to upgrade it. -- slimkid The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will improve. Personally I couldn't give a stuff how a system sounds with jazz or classical - if it doesn't reproduce dark electro and industrial music with clarity, depth, power and aggression then it's no good to me. Plaintive cries about how smooth, relaxed or refined it is will fall (metaphorically speaking) on deaf ears - choosing music to suit the equipment is the tail wagging the dog. Fair enough, and I didn't mean to start a war on music tastes. And, certainly, if I was into the listening the crickets in the fields, I would have chosen the gear that presents them in the best possible way. However, this is supposed to be unbiased comaprison of the high level/priced components. Everybody (who is into the music) knows how the piano, bass, human voice or any natural recordable sound sounds. So we know the criteria when it comes to judging the performance of the piece of gear. I don't know how the electric guitar in Black Sabbath (or Pink Floyd) really sounds and neither do you. So, we both can choose the gear that we like best. And likely, they would be different. But we can't credibly claim that one is better than the other only because we like it better in presenting our preffered type of music. So, my point in choosing the type of music in such tests is, since we are testing High Fidelity gear, we have to have a criterion - fidely to what. Again, no hard feelings towards metal fans :) K -- slimkid The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will improve. However, we are talking Black Sabbath here. Now, try to remember when was it last time you saw heavy metal band playing on the Stratocaster plugged in directly into Mashall/Fender tube amp. Likelier, there will be like 20-ish different gadgets in the signal path before it even reaches the amp if it even goes there rather than directly into the mixer. Go with the squeezebox, and then you'll have a choce to compare its analog vs. digital through the receiver and stick to what you like better. Especially, if your receiver doesn't have analog pass through, then feature where the bigest improvement in transporter is, its DAC, will be useless to you.
