The above replys and if you don't have the "light blue console cable" just
make a regular 8 conductor straight thru cable. But you will have to end up
using rj45 to db9/db25 adapter (cisco's or the one with compatible pinout).

RE: NAT Security

2000-05-19 Thread Kevin Welch

Just to provide my opinion on Zone Alarm:

I think Zone Alarm is a nice piece of software, it is by no means fool
proof, but its application specific settings make it a very nice solution.
With Zone Alarm it is very easy to allow one application access to the net
while denying another. For example on my machine at work I can allow
Outlook to Access the intranet, but keep it from accessing the Internet. I
can allow my browser to browse both the Internet and intranet. And I can
make sure our lousy sysadmins cannot use SMS to spy on my work habbits by
denying SMS access to any network resources at all. This can be both a boon
and burden so like any security solution its best to expect it to fail, at
least that way you are not suprised when it does :-)

IP address negotiated

2000-05-19 Thread Mark_Edwards

Hi all,

Does anybody know exactly what the "ip address negotiated" command does. I
looked it up on CCO but have found the descriptions very vague. I understand
that it negotiates the IP address from some source, but what source is this ? Is
it possible to change the source?

I have an ISDN link between two routers with ip address negotiated applied to
the dialer interface on one side, and a fixed IP address applied to the dialer
on the opposite side. The configuration seems to work but I would like to know
how to change the address that is negotiated.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

for some reason, I am not able to finish all 4 exams
by July 31, then can I take the corresponding exam in
the new Series CCNP 2.0? Suppose if I clear all exams
except CMTD then if I take BCRAN in 2.0 series, will
my CCNP show as complete?

2. How soon I will have to recertify again if I clear
all exmas of CCNP 1.0 by July 31, 2000.

Thanks in advance.

config files down the Console cable

2000-05-19 Thread Janine Williams

Hi peeps,

Thanks for the response, but i think i need the make
my questions a bit clearer.

Question. When a config is copied from a router to
TFTP server, what format is this file? (is it just
*.txt ???)

Now, suppose I'm physically connected to a newly
out-of-the-box router via the light blue console cable
and in a Hyperterminal session, say no to all the
setup prompts. Now suppose I have a config file on my
PC that is the same format that it would be on the
TFTP server.

Is there a way that i can send this config file as a
whole directly to NVRAM, or RAM, when connected via
the console port?

I read some people's responce about cut and pasting,
can someone just explain how you do this, i haven't
tried this yet. Do you just cut and pastes the whole
config or do it in stages?

Thanks in advance

Re: Link State Question on Adjacencies- one thought

2000-05-19 Thread Pablo Thoma

Tony,

Unless you have ospf network types broadcast or non broadcast defined
(ethernet, nbma) you will not have DR/BDR election and LSA type 2's
(network LSA's) like
Scott mentioned.

Router F will know about routerA and the others through their router
LSA's beeing
flooded by the other routers until they reach routerF (if your drawing
represents
a single ospf area). If you have multiple areas then the ABR's will
create summary LSA's describing how to reach the networks attached to
routerA and others.
As for eigrp it works differently and works more like a normal distance
vector
protocol when sending out reachability information.

I would recommend you read the RFC or other available info on cisco.com
if you want
more details :)

thanks,
Pablo

Subject: How do you decide what version of the IOS to use?

Some collegues of mine are having a discussion as to what are reasonable
guidelines to decide what version of the IOS to use on the various routers
on our network.

Currently we have Qtd. 4 3640s and Qtd. 1 4700 on our production network.
We recently purchased a 3660 to act as a temporary spare if any of these
routers went down. The 4700 is the center of our network and the 3640s serve
remote sites.

Disclaimer: I did not know of or make any of these decisions nor do I work
directly with these people or on this equipment. I am merely dependent on
them.

The 4700 died and the 3660 was pressed into service with 12.0.5T of the IOS
on it. This is what it was shipped with and my coworkers did not get around
to checking this out.***12.0.5T is a deferred verison of the IOS and from
what I understand it is evil***

The replacement 3660 had problems with its Ethernet and Token Ring
interfaces wedging and bringing the entire network down. After a day of
screwing around they finally updated to 12.0.7.

The 3660 platform does not have a release of code that has met the General
Distribution standard as of yet. It does have a version of the code that
meets the Limited Distribution standard according to Cisco...12.1.2 and
12.1.1

As of now the 3660 is still in the network at 12.0.7

The 3640s are at 12.0.4T ***A deferred version***

We have gotten a replacement 4700 from Cisco and are going to put it back
into the network.

It was running 11.2.18 prior to its failure and seemed pretty stable.

Not all of the people supporting these routers are extremely confident with
the IOS especially in an emergency. If the versions of IOS on these routers
had different syntax for any of the configuration commands, this could cause
problems in making a quick swap in an emergency. (They will probably not
have any premade configurations, but that is another battle.)

These routers support services that must be up 24/7.

I have these questions.

1. What version of the IOS would you put on each type of router and why?

2. How good a guide are the GD, LD, ED and DF status ratings of the IOS?

3. How important (if at all) do you think it is to have these core routers
at the same version of IOS?

4. How important do you think it is to use the latest version of the IOS?

5. When should you make this change?

Thanks very much for wading through this long posting. I have never found
any published guidelines on this topic other than what is on the Cisco
website. I will be sharing the responses with the people who make the
decisions regarging this equipment. It would be helpful if respondents gave
some indication of their level of experience or certification.

Thanks once again for your time and patience,

Tony

Re: alarm lights on tsu puzzle

Basic testing approach shud be as follows
1. U need to test the 64k physical pairs (2/4 pairs ) are working fine . this
can be achieved by testing the line impedance using multimeter. If you bert
meter it will be ideal to test the line
2. If the line is ok, then check the configurations and check the alarms. If
possible change the
 modem pairs.

CISCO'S ROUTED WAN MANAGEMENT

2000-05-19 Thread ALI SHEERAZ

HI ,

We have implemented a NMS(network management software) in a company. The
company has purchased CISCO Works 2000 software which has five components

ACCESS LIST MANAGER
TRAFFIC DIRECTOR
INTERNETWORK PERFOMANCE MONITOR
RESOURCE MANAGER ESSENTIALS
CISCO VIEW

The bundled solution is called ROUTED WAN MANAGEMENT.I am sure you people
are aware of it.The main problem of the company is to log the reports on
half yearly basis which is not working with internetwork performance
monitor. Can anyone tell us how to resolve the problem?

The software fulfills all other requirements of the company.

bye

A stupid newbie question, but
6 months ago I bought Sybex's CCNA study guide for the 640-407
exam. Unfotunately I got busy and had to stop studying. Now I want to
get back to studying for the CCNA, but I hear there is a new exam
640-507. What is new/changed in the new exam. Should I get a new book?

AS5300 Mica modem probs ?

2000-05-19 Thread Phil Barker

Problem is that users are taking 5+ attempts to log
on,
from Laptops using PCMCIA Gold cards.
Client is dial-up networking and initial speed was set
to 115200. I have subsequently found that lowering the
client speed to 57600 on the com port improves the
logon rate. However, this should only affect the speed
from the Laptop to the modem.

According to debug modem etc it was getting locked up
at the "EC Negotiation phase"

Has anyone dealt with this type of problem before ?

 2 392241 mica-modem-pw.2.7.1.0.bin (from sh
flash)
Cannot find any info for the above revision of
firmware
for the modems.

Thanx for your attention,

Phil.

Re: Is Laura Chappel's CIT book

2000-05-19 Thread Russell Lusignan

I just finished it. It is a great overview of troubleshooting techniques.
It's also a good reference guide for quick things (ie: whats the command to
debug ARP requests etc...) Plus it has scenarios after the sections to give
you examples of how to troubleshoot the various sections. I have used the
Cisco Press books for every exam I am written (along w/ the Exam Cram and
Boson tests and of course experience..) It's not an overly large book like
the Lan Switching or CMTD books, so it shouldn't take too long to read it.

Hope that helps.

IPX book

2000-05-19 Thread Francisco Muniz

Anyone care to recomend some good book on IPX / Appletalk ? I found one by
Laura Chappel on amazon that looks good, has anyone read it? There are also
some Cisco IOS solutions that look like an extension to the Cisco IOS
reference.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Connection(less) services

2000-05-19 Thread Oscar Rau

When you look at TCP and UDP applications, they are placed
in the Transport layer of the OSI model. Some of the Cisco
certification literature suggests that connection oriented
services and connectionless services are handled by Layer 3
which is the network layer.

Which layer is primarily responsible for connection oriented
and connectionless services?

Thank you in advance.

CCNA worthless?

2000-05-19 Thread paul doyl

Hello people
Yesterday a we interveiwed a guy for a job for general network hardware
support. He had a CCNA gained from CCNA boot camp (4 days). The thing is
(from what I hear) he had very little idea and couldn't answer the simplest
questions, long blank pause after being asked what a subnet was or explain
what a subnet mask was. Now I'm concerned as I actually had to study quite
hard to get my CCNA. Does anyone have similar tales or stories to tell about
what goes on at these 'boot camps'?
Thanks in advance.

I connected the other two to it and set up a frame relay connection between

Serial is up line protocol is up on both sides.

Encapsulation is Frame relay

What else is there to check? All suggestions appreciated.

WAN question

I have some questions about HDLC and WAN protocols.

Is HDLC via serial interface between router and mainframe? and between router and

If HDLC is done between router to router, is it over WAN using POTS?

Do WAN technologies such as Frame Relay, X.25, HDLC and ATM networks use POTS?

Thanks you for any info.

OT-Survey of age certs and experience

2000-05-19 Thread Prather, Aaron
Title: OT-Survey of age certs and experience

Ive been reading this list for about a year now, and this is my second or third post (I plan to post more now though) I wanted to get a quick survey of who everyone is, age, certs, and experience - if you dont mind. :)  Ill start off:

Age:  22
Certs:  MCSE, MCP+I, Network+, MCNE5&4.11, CCNP, CCDP, CCIE cand.
Exp.:  2 1/2 years of experience in the networking industry, started off working with hardware, then worked my way up the ladder.

Future Certs:  Right now im working on CVOICE, next will be CATM, and then CCIE lab (one day) ;-) after that I am going to look into Solaris Admin

Location:  Louisiana

I threw in a couple of extra things, but I know people here are busy, so anything you could contribute would be nice.

Thanks everyone in advance for satisfying my curiosity,

Aaron

Re: AS5300 Mica modem probs ?

2000-05-19 Thread Rich Russell

Yes, there is a command to lower your 5300 side for quicker connect rate.
We had the same problem. The real issue is that the mica modems are less
tolerant of line problems than the 5200's were. So lowering the connect
rate solved our problem. We called TAC to get the correct modem string. If
you're really into troubleshooting this problem look into the far end echo
and you'll see the problem.

Just a curious note- I haven't ever seen a CCNP boot camp. I wonder if
anyone claims to be able to prepare you for CCNP real fast like the CCNA and

Re: Intermittent Packet Loss

2000-05-19 Thread J Neib

Hmmm... we have 1900s, 2924XLs, 5000s, 5500s ,etc. And we have no problems
with our LAN.

10% packet loss is indicative of a problem, but I doubt it is the hardware.
Check the speed/duplex settings between the switch and the router. If they
are mismatched, especially if one side is full duplex and the other is half,
then you will certainly have problems.

We need to upgrade our 2501 which currently has IOS ver 11.2. My question
is which IOS upgrade would be best and most stable for this router that
includes using the router as a firewall?

Thanks,

Wiring trouble?

2000-05-19 Thread Brian Lodwick

I need some help here. I am setting up a homelab with a 2501 and a 2502. I
have 2 CSU/DSUs also. I think I have an error in the wiring. The 2 csu's use
pin 1and 2 for transmit and 7 and 8 for receive. What I have done is crossed
thes pins 1 to 8 and 2 to 7 I've also tried 1 to 7 and 2 to 8 but I get the
same thing. One of the CSU's has carrier and transfer illuminated and the
other one has all of the opposite lights illuminated. The timing is set as
internal and reply as the instruction booklet states it should be. It's
pretty frustrating. Can someone who has done this help me out?
The interface configuration on the router is real simple frame-relay setup
mapped, both DTE.
oh and the CSU/DSUs are set for synchronous 56K.

RE: WAN question

2000-05-19 Thread Taylor, Don

HDLC may be used between routers and routers, routers and mainframes, and
mainframes and mainframes. It's all over the place; that's why it's a
standard. It doesn't have to go over a WAN - it can be back to back - but it
certainly can, though never over POTS. POTS stands for Plain Ol' Telephone
Service, which is limited to 56K (and further limited to 53K in the U.S. by
the FCC), so there's no way that higher bandwidth technologies can be used
over it. Besides that, it's asynchronous, whereas the others you mentioned
are not (well ATM kinda is...).

POTS is a WAN technology, but it's not a protocol like PPP or SLIP. The only
way a WAN protocol (other than async) would use POTS, that I can think of,
is as a backup method.

I have some questions about HDLC and WAN protocols.

Is HDLC via serial interface between router and mainframe? and between
router and router?
If HDLC is done between router to router, is it over WAN using POTS?

Do WAN technologies such as Frame Relay, X.25, HDLC and ATM networks use
POTS?

Thanks you for any info.

Cisco is great in the lan...what about segmenting your lan to create more

RE: WAN question

: POTS stands for Plain Ol' Telephone Service, which is limited to 56K
: (and further limited to 53K in the U.S. by the FCC)

This is a technical list, and I'd like to discuss this:

I've heard that the 53k FCC limit was an x2 limitation, not a K56Flex
or v90 limitation. The website I read this on was quite persistant
about this, insulting USR for propograting the "lie" that 53K was
the ceiling, when really it was just the ceiling for THEIR technology.

Does anyone know the official verdict on this?

This is a technical list, and I'd like to discuss this:

I've heard that the 53k FCC limit was an x2 limitation, not a K56Flex
or v90 limitation. The website I read this on was quite persistant
about this, insulting USR for propograting the "lie" that 53K was
the ceiling, when really it was just the ceiling for THEIR technology.

Does anyone know the official verdict on this?

Question on missing ranges...

2000-05-19 Thread CiscoEssentials

Hey Group,
I was just finalizing my cram session when I came accross something that I hadn't
noticed before. It's not very important and don't think it will come up on the test
but I'm simply asking out of curiosity. The access list ranges are as follows:

1-99 = IP Standard
100-199 = IP Extended
200-299 = Protocol type-code
300-399 = DECnet
600-699 = Appletalk
700-799 = 48 bit MAC
800-899 = IPX standard
900-999 = IPX extended
1000-1099 = IPX SAP
1100-1199 = Extended 48 bit MAC
1200-1299 = IPX Summary address

Now my question is quite simple...What happened to the number range of 400-599??? Are
these used for something else that we don't need to know? Why aren't they in the book?
And why don't they even address why they're not in the book with an explanation? Any
comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help. ;)

Appendix in Laura Chapell's ACRC book . I'm gonna take the ACRC test in a

The simplest easiest program to use is terminal.exe from Windows 3.1.
Hyperterminal is very buggy. Also make sure to properly set up the
communication settings, correct com port, speed at 9600, etc.

cost of FE and subinterfaces in EIGRP

2000-05-19 Thread Cisco Wave

Hello there,

I have 2 WAN routers (RA, and RB) actually connected
via a FastEthernet interface that comprises sub
interfaces.

FastEthernet1/0.23 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is DEC21140, address is 0010.f6d8.1810 (bia
0010.f6d8.1810)
  Description: Boundary VLAN
  Internet address is 149.8.170.66/29
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10 Kbit, DLY 100 usec, rely
255/255, load 1/255
Encapsulation ISL Virtual LAN, Color 900.

I am running EIGRP and the cost of routes on RA coming
from RB are previous_cost+2560.

RA:
D EX10.16.8.0/24 [170/21282560] via 170.8.1.2,
01:02:34, FastEthernet1/0.3
 [170/21282560] via 149.8.0.169,
01:02:34, Serial2/0.3

RB :
D EX10.16.8.0/24 [170/2128] via 149.8.2.30,
15:32:14, Serial3/0.3

The plan is to connect RA and RB via FastEthernet
directly without sub interfaces defined.

Will that change the cost of the advertised routes ?
I am just wondering if a subinterface on a FE has the
same EIGRP cost as a normal FE.
Is there anything that I should check ? It sounds a
pretty stright through change, but I am just cautious.
Thank you for letting me know,

It is a text file. You can name it anything you want. It defaults to
-confg if I recall correctly. Micros~1 is fussy about file
extensions so you may need to rename it .txt to easily deal
with it in Notepad, etc.

1. Escape out of the setup dialog with Control-C

2. Type "enable" and hit enter.

3. Type "config term" and hit enter.

4. Start an ASCII file transfer of the file from your PC.

5. Type "copy run start" or "write mem" when the file finishes loading.

Either way. In chunks you can see any error messages that pop up if
something in your config makes the router unhappy or it doesn't parse
correctly.

Yup, just get a NM-1V (or 2V) for each router and an FXS card - if you want to gateway through to a POTS line, also get a FXO card.

PPP Problem

2000-05-19 Thread Suresh Babu.Y.K

Hi,

I have a 3640 router with one serial module and an ethernet module.IOS
Version running on this is 11.3.

On one of the serial ports, I had a WAN link with PPP encapsulation and
this is the connection to Internet.

Suddenly this serial interface port module went bad and I replaced this
with a new one.

Now on this new module, if I connect the PPP WAN link, it keeps saying
"LCP Req sent" and "LCP Listen" but never goes to OPEN mode.

Strange thing is that if I run PPP over any other WAN link on the same(Not
Internet link) serial module, things work fine.

What's happenning herecan some one let me know.

Regards,

Suresh

ISDN have 2 B channels, only one channels is use to sending data while
another is idle, except it is configure for load balancing then both
channels is used.

It is possible to configure 1 B channel for dial to site A and oanother
channel for site B ,without to have two physical ISDN line.

Could anyone tell me if the AppleTalk, ISDN and NLSP are covered in ACRC
test? I'm kind of wondering about that because those three sections are
Appendix in Laura Chapell's ACRC book . I'm gonna take the ACRC test in a
week, so it's really important to know if I need to study those.
Thanks in advance!

RE: Question on missing ranges...

2000-05-19 Thread Heskett, Tony

(Per your mail below)

Looks like you're on a box that doesn't support XNS,
which will probably be absolutely fine so far as
you're concerned. I /think/ this is Enterprise, btw.

c2610#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
c2610(config)#access-list ?
  <1-99> IP standard access list
  <100-199>IP extended access list
  <1000-1099> IPX SAP access list
<1100-1199> Extended 48-bit MAC address access list
<1200-1299> IPX summary address access list
  <200-299>Protocol type-code access list
  <300-399>DECnet access list
  <400-499>XNS standard access list
  <500-599>XNS extended access list
  <600-699>Appletalk access list
  <700-799>48-bit MAC address access list
  <800-899>IPX standard access list
  <900-999>IPX extended access list

Thanks for replying. I will go to the more basic level of this question.

For PPP, ISDN, DSL type of WAN connections, you can use the analogue phone
lines at home. What about for Frame Relay, T1, T2 etc. type of lines? What
medium is used for these WAN connections? I was under the impression that it is
POTS (analogue lines) with specialized equipment.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Re: VoIP on C2600 - Home Lab

2000-05-19 Thread Joe Pinkus

Billy,

To setup up the basics all you need is an fxs port on both routers, connect the
routers back to back with serial, then you can create voice pots and voice voip
dial-peers and have at it.
