Re: Voice Over IP configuration

2000-07-06 Thread harora

Hi Erick,

I have worked with this kind of setup. I used EPABX connectivity. I
connected the cable from EPABX to the voice ports of the router and the
config which I made had worked fine. The config is attached herewith.

(See attached file: cis.txt)

Hope this would help...

Send me a copy of your configs. Sounds like you have a
port / dest-pattern mapping mismatch. Are you able to
dial the local phones fine connected to router (if you
have 2 phones plugged into the ports)?

a c2500 doesn't have more than 2 network and 2 serial modules.
You would need somehing like a 4500/4700 router with 6-ethernet
2-tokenring.

But since a router with so many ports is kind of expensive, I'd suggest
using a catalyst 4xxx/5xxx/6xxx switch and using VLANs to segment your
network.

Then you need a router to route between the VLANs. This can be done
with a RSM (a route switch module), which is an optional card within
the catalyst switch.

Or you buy an external router with at least a 100 MBit Card, that
supports ISL and then you create subinterfaces on that interface
that match your VLANs and you can route between the VLANs as yout like
using one router. This modular router could also get 2 TokenRing
Interfaces to route / bridge between Ethernet and TokenRing.

This could be done with a 4500/4700/3620/3640 router.

I have no experience with tokenring cards on the catalyst switch,
sorry.

Then your server and stations are on switched ports and you can
put the servers "in front of your clients" to apply something
like a 80/20 traffic pattern if you like

ISIS routing design guides

2000-07-06 Thread McCallum, Robert

Does anyone know of a complete book on the design issues / implementation
standards/guidelines for ISIS routing. Every Cisco book I try or even the
cco seem to skip over ISIS in favour of OSPF and EIGRP. Now considering
that this is a ratified telecomms standard and even one day YOU might have
to use ISIS there is no decent documentation , unless of course you guys /
gals can prove me wrong. Please do so.

Books tried : Cisco Internetworking Design.
CCIE - Network Design and Case Studies.
Cisco IOS Solutions for Network Protocols Volume II - IPX,
AppleTalk and more.

CCO - scanned through pulled of many documents still a bit woolly.

Cheers

Variance command is used to load share over unequal paths. i.e. a 1mb and a
2 mb circuit, in normal routing terms the 2mb circuit would be used all the
time (unless specified otherwise). Putting a variance in this case of 2
will allow any the above circuits to load share. Because 1 * 2 = 2.

Re: Secondary IP address

2000-07-06 Thread Erik van Gerven

Use different ip ranges on 1 network to create different IP domains. Use policy
routing on another router to resolve to different networks (interfaces) based
on source address. thus making a simple sort of (non secure) VLANning possible
intirely in level3.
The other way around:
Use a secondary address on the seeding port of a router using NAT. When the
customer wants a firewall/proxy/whatever, set a static NAT rule for all traffic
for this IP# to te firewall/proxy/whatever

Of course, there are other ways to accomplish this (NAT Pool etc.)

Does Policy override ACLs??

2000-07-06 Thread bandrews

A question got thrown at me while coming up with a solution for a problem.
We want to funnel traffic from a certain external address around our
firewall and allow everything else to hit the fire wall. Easy, right! Get
the ip of the device and allow it to use a shunt. Problem: The traffic is
SMTP and the internal network's policy is such that it sends SMTP to the
firewall. Apply an ACL to route the traffic right? Which begs the question
does Policy negate ACLs?? Our external net uses ip based routing, if that
helps.

RE: Variance Question

2000-07-06 Thread Cormac Long

A variance of 2 means that you will use the best path
any any other path that is less than twice the best
metric.
In the case of 2 paths, you will then send twice as
much traffic over the better path.
BE VERY CAREFUL with variance, how it's implemented
depends on whether the router is process switching or
fast switching.
For process switching, two packets are sent on the
better path for every one packet on the other path.
For fast switching, twice as many destinations are
cached against the better path. But what if there is
very little traffic to many of the destinations cached
against the better path? This will result in what is
termed pinhole congestion with too much traffic going
over the slower path.
Personally I do not like the variance feature. I have
never seen it used on a real network- for good reason.
Also, I would say that this is why your BSCN
instructor did not pay much attention to it.

Cisco VPN questions

2000-07-06 Thread Mohammed Hussain

Hi All,

I have few questions regarding Cisco VPN Module, can someone explain me
please.

Assume that if a corporate head office wants to have Cisco 7100
series with Integrated Services Module for IPSec & MPPE encryption.

1. Does the 7100 series router should also have IPSec enabled
IOS if we are going for integrated VPN module.

2. What about the corporate branch office, they can have Cisco
2600 series with IPSec enabled IOS, rather then having VPN hardware module
on 1720 or 1750.

3. Security point of view, which is the best way to terminate
tunnels whether on Cisco router or PIX firewall.

Thanks

RE: Cisco/CoVad un bridge

2000-07-06 Thread Duncan Maccubbin

A much easier way is to request a bridge and use a dual ethernet
router. You can then put your IP on the outside interface of the router.
This way you don't need to request additional IP addresses (which they
might charge for) and you won't have to pass through 2 routers.

FYI- Netopia is a pretty good router. That company is on top of things
and they have an excellent website.

Re: PIX firewall version 4.4

2000-07-06 Thread Michael Losa

If you want to keep your FTP server on the Inside
network of the PIX you need to do a few things. I am
assuming you already have access through the PIX.

1) If your private network does not use valid Internet
addressing (i.e. an 10.0.0.0 or 192.168.0.0 subnet or
a non-registered address, AKA using Network Address
translation or NAT) then you must build a static
through the PIX. This allows an Inside address to
have a specified Outside address.
Syntax:

static (Inside, Outside) x.x.x.x y.y.y.y

where x.x.x.x is your registered outside address and
y.y.y.y is your unregistered Inside address. The
syntax is confusing b/c you have the key words Inside,
Outside but then the addresses are outside then
inside. This is why you here PIX people walking
around mumbling Inside, Outside Outside, Inside. But
I digress.

2) Next you need to allow acces through the PIX box,
since PIX is a stateful box and will not let any
traffic through it unless it was asked for. To do
this you need to build a Conduit.
Syntax:

conduit permit tcp host x.x.x.x eq ftp any

This will allow TCP connections on the FTP ports (20,
and 21) to access x.x.x.x. Where x.x.x.x is your
registered OUTSIDE address. The any at the end of the
statement allows any address through to your FTP
server. You could filter access and allow only
certain address through, I don't know what use your
FTP server is for.

This should get the job done. If you have any further
issues let me know, I would love to help.

RE: Yet Another ISDN question

The spid is the whole number that the router identifies itself to the isdn
switch with.. The local directory number is usually the same as the spid
less a few numbers, for ex...
spid= 26286179880101
ldn= 2628617988
or
ldn=8617988

depending on the router... when your calling a remote location you call
the remotes local directory number... same rules apply if you need to use
area code or not...

ISDN TA connected to AUX

2000-07-06 Thread Tony Russell

Don't ask me why but we are connecting ISDN TA's to the Aux port of a router
for backup purposes. I have gotten everything to work but was wondering if
anyone knew why the dialer map statement does not appear to work with ISDN
TAs. I've done similar things with USR modems and dialer map works fine.
When I use dialer map with ISDN TA, and debug the dialer, I get a message
saying no dialer string. Because of this, I ended up using the

chat-script
dialer string
script dialer

commands to get the TA to dial.

This config works fine and TA dials central location and connects.

Can anyone tell me why dialer map doesn't work in this situation?

Re: file can't be deleted on 3640

2000-07-06 Thread Joe Freeman

As long as your boot rom is ok, you can erase the flash without having to
xmodem a new IOS or config.

After you issue an erase flash: command, reload the router, then it should
boot to the router(boot)> prompt At that point, config an IP, a
default route if needed, and issue a no shut on the appropriate interface.
You should be able to do a TFTP at that point, which is much faster than
xmodem over the console port, obviously.

ASP Questions

2000-07-06 Thread Gary Alterson

For those of you who work for ASP's, what kind of
lines do you run to your customers?  Do you go with Frame Relay to customer
sites, point to point, ATM?  What about redundancy?  Do you NAT and
firewall between youself and each customer?  Does anyone provision their
network to keep each customer seperate (Non-Layer 3 switched VLANS or such)? How
about ownership of equipment at the customer site... do you place your own
equipment as part of your service or do you have the customers buy
equipment?  Or, is it a whatever the customer wants kind of
deal?

Just curious about what different ASPs are
doing.

Thanks,
Gary

Re: TCP Methodology

2000-07-06 Thread TKager

Essentially IP is responsible for addressing the packet so that it conveys information
about the location of the destination and therefore can be routed.

TCP is responsible for establishing and maintaining reliable communications. This
means that if TCP A sends data to TCP B and this data is not acknowledged by TCP B,
TCP A will assume that it got lost and retransmit it. TCP is also connection oriented.
This means that a formal connection establishment process must be followed (this is
refered to as a 3-way handshake) before actual data can flow.

When you talk about virtual connection, don't confuse it with virtual circuit. A
virtual circuit is basically a path established through the network, through which all
traffic travels, although, it is not true to say that traffic cannot be re-routed if a
failure ocurs.

When TCP resides over IP, IP handles the routing of the datagrams. Packets are routed
on a packet by packet basis based on the destination IP address contained within the
packet. It is common for the path to a destination to differ from the path back. But,
it doesn't matter because TCP really doesn't care, although TCP and IP are related in
the following ways:
1) A TCP socket is used to identify the connection. A Socket is composed of the source
and destination IP addresses and Ports (80=HTTP, 25=SMTP, etc).
2) A TCP connection is associated with a routing table entry. Therefore, if the router
that you used to establish the connection goes away, you cannot defer to another
routing table entry and continue the same connection.
3) TCP will not send datagrams larger than the MTU (maximum transmission unit) of the
underlying media. IP can fragment datagrams larger than the MTU, but this is typically
not desireable, since IP is not as intelligent as TCP. TCP can also employ a
mechanism called Path MTU discovery whereby it will attempt to determine the smallest
MTU of a path and attempt to avoid creating segment larger than this.

Generally speaking, routers route packets via the layer 3 (IP) destination address
contained in the packet. The TCP connection is between the source and destination.

If you need a better explanation of the interraction of these 2 protocols, I would
suggest that you read TCP/Illustrated Volume 1 by Richard Stevens.

Hope that you found this helpful,

Tom Kager

Re: Secondary IP address

A big draw back is how protocols like OSPF deal with secondaries. OSPF
treats a secondary like a stub network and will never form adjacencies on

ISDN BRI - both B channels slows down

2000-07-06 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I have a weird problem with two 700 series ISDN routers.

At the branch office I have a workstation with an IBM AS400 Client Express
application that communicates via IP on port 23 to an IBM AS400 mainframe at
the head office.

If I use only one B channel to connect the two routers, my search response
time is one (1) second, but if I establishes both B channels my response
time is five (5) seconds.

I have multidestination set to off since it's to the same destination, and
only one profile is in use to the head office.

Everything else seems to work as it should - file transfer is almost 64Kbps
on one B channel, and almost 128Kbps on two.

Have anyone seen this, or a similar problem before???

Does anyone have a good tip???

Thanks,

Ole

CCS/VoFR

2000-07-06 Thread Mike Narine

Hi all,
need some suggestions on configuring VoFR using CCS channel group. The PBX
that I'm connecting the routers (MC3810s) needs to send caller info to the
other PBX otherwise it will not work. I was told that CCS (Common Channel
Signaling) is what I need to use to resolve this issue. Am I on the right
track?
Thanks in advance.

BCMSN

2000-07-06 Thread Rik Guyler

Well, I passed BCMSN yesterday and I have to say that the test sucked. I
didn't feel that it was overly technically difficult (your opinion may be
different), but many of the questions were worded poorly. So poor at times
that I wasn't sure what the question was asking. If CLSC was worse than
this one then I'm glad I waited to take the 2.0 version!

I read the CiscoPress LAN Switching book (Clark), which is wonderful. This
was my main source of study, which more than covered the switching topics.
This is a CCIE prep book and at around 1000 pages, it does not lack detail
in any area. I did hit CCO a few times so I could get a new twist on a
given explanation, but the book covers everything you need for the test as
well as a ton of material for real-world networking. Get the book and
learn! Passing the test will come naturally after this!

Now, onward to CIT for my final CCNP test...

Easy Brain Teaser (Switching)

2000-07-06 Thread John Neiberger

Here's an easy one, because I'm nicer than Chuck. :-) Even though it's
easy, it's still practical. And for those of you who immediately know the
answer, let the less experienced people mull this one over for a bit.

You have a Catalyst 5000 with several servers connected and you've decided
to rearrange the port assignments. You disconnect one server in particular
and move it to another port, then quickly discover that it now has no
network connectivity. You attempt to access the network for a couple of
minutes to no avail. In supreme frustration, you head to the break room for
coffee and donuts.

When you come back several minutes later you find that the server now has
network connectivity and all is well, no problems.

What is the most likely cause of this behavior and what could you have done
to remedy the situation immediately?

Good luck!

John

Re: CCIE Lab Question

2000-07-06 Thread Jonathan Hays

Ty,

I have asked the same questions to CCIEs and the consensus is:

1. IOS version is the latest stable release - they probably don't change it
every day.

2.You will have a laptop with the documentation CD - use that and forget about
the paper version (access is too slow). Cut and paste into your configs.
Realistically, most CCIEs have told me that the commands should flow out of
your fingertips for the most part. So you won't have the time to be looking up
all the answers. Just the few unusual items you may be unfamiliar with.

3.I have been told the actual router equipment varies from lab to lab and that
the main focus of the test is the IOS, not the equipment.

HTH,

Jonathan

RE: interesting

2000-07-06 Thread Diegmueller, Jason (I.T. Dept)

>From my experience, this is the case in an attempt to reduce/eliminate
smurf amplification on the Internet.

My company uses an application which utilizes directed broadcasts in
an attempt to save on bandwidth, and any 12.0 deployment/upgrade I do
required "ip directed-broadcast" on each Ethernet/Tokenring interface.

Oddly enough, both "no ip directed-broadcast" and "ip directed-broadcast"
will show up in the running-config. I assume this was due to the default
behavior changing and will probably disappear again.

Any thoughts...

2000-07-06 Thread Russ Kreigh

Hi all I posted a question a while back asking how to limit the maximum
speed of an IP address. Well I have kinda got something working that does do
that, but it limits everything!

access-list 5 permit 10.1.1.2
access-list 5 deny any

Ethernet 0
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
ip address 10.1.2.1 255.255.255.0 secondary
rate-limit input access-group 5 128000 128000 128000 conform-action transmit
exceed-action drop
rate-limit output access-group 5 128000 128000 128000 conform-action
transmit exceed-action drop

I want this configuration to limit the bandwidth of IP address 10.1.1.2 to
128k which it does, but it limits everything else also.

Any thoughts on this?

RE: CCIE Lab Question

2000-07-06 Thread Daniel Cotts

2) Config and Command texts are a complete set of books. I have heard that
they now cost $600 for the set. I haven't found where to order them. In the
old days I received them without charge when purchasing a router. Just had
to push the point.

As an example I have the 11.1 set. The first book is titled "Configuration
Fundamentals Configuration Guide"
Customer order number DOC-CFCG11.1=
Text part number 78-2421-01 (successive books increment this number
78-2422-01 etc.)
Not sure if there is one part number for the entire set. It would seem that
there should be.

Can anyone make this more clear??

RE: BCSN 2.0 Preparation

2000-07-06 Thread Jon . E . Gudmundsson

I am going to take that exam on the 26 th of august. This exam is much build
on routing protocols like OSPF, BGP and EIGRP. Here is that I have studied
so far:
1) The exam objectives on the cisco page
2) There is a good explanation of the difference between the old ACRC and
BSCN on www.boson.com in pdf format
3) Advanced Cisco router configuration Study guide by Todd Lamle from Sybex
( I read the chapters about ospf, eigrp and BGP but I skip everything else in
it.
4)Advanced cisco router configuration Exam Notes by Todd Lamle from Sybex (I
do the same for that book as well)
5) ACRC student guide from a course that someone at my work took 3 years
ago. I read the routing protocol part and skip the rest
6) I am reading now ospf: Anatomy of an internet routing protocol by John.
T. Moy. It is an excellent book about the OSPF and goes into great details.
Moy is the author of the most RFCs that have been published of ospf.
7) I will read through the www.cisco.com about ospf, eigrp and bgp through
the next month.
8) I am waiting for following books to arrive:
Internet Routing Architectures
ISBN: 1-56205-652-2
By Bassam Halabi

CCIE Professional Development: Routing TCP/IP
ISBN: 1-57870-041-8
By Jeff Doyle

Advanced Cisco Router Configuration (ACRC)
ISBN: 1-57870-074-4
Edited by Laura Chappell

IP Routing Fundamentals"
 Mark A. Sportack;

I am looking for a book or article on the net about ospf over frame relay.
Moy do not take that in as much details as I like to but maybe some of the
above books that I am ordering will dig deeper into it.
Hope this helps

CCIE Lab Access (New Site)

2000-07-06 Thread Jeremiah Rutherford

Hello, Everyone

I hope everybody had a good holiday. Hey I talked to a couple of guys who
are starting a new Lab study site. It is suppose to be really complex with
great prices. They already have 1 Pod for R&S, also 1 for ISP dial, 1 for
CCNP, 1 for CCNA, they have a pretty sweet setup. I also saw 2 IGX wan
switches in boxes. They said they are only going to have labs for every
Certification track. There stuff is suppose to be alot cheaper than that of
MentorLabs. Send me an e-mail if you want and I will give you a phone
number so you can talk with those guys. I put myself on the list for R&S
lab time. The site is going to be called www.complexnetworks.net .

Everybody enjoy their week and good luck on any exams.

Later, J

My understanding (and I'm no ISDN switch expert) is that the directory
numbers and the SPIDs don't _have_ to have any relation to each other, but
that the providers tend to use the directory numbers within the SPIDs for
simplicity. The SPIDs ID you to your local ISDN switch, and the directory
numbers are, basically, your phone number, which will be used by other
devices to call you.

I hate these but....

2000-07-06 Thread Aaron Prather

I have searched the archives (which I always do before posting anything)
and I have not found much information on the CATM test. If anyone who has
taken this exam can give me info on it, I would be very appreciative
(passing score, main focus, # of questions, # of fill in the blank/config
command questions).

Again, I hate posts like this because 90% of the posts to this list can be
answered with a little searching either on cisco's site or these archives.
But I like to know as much about an exam as possible before going into it.

Thanks guys,

Aaron Prather

changing startup configs without changing running configs

2000-07-06 Thread Rue Barb the Tangled

Something someone got me thinking about today - management wanted a change
to the startup, but not the running config - (they'd reboot later) - don't
ask me why.

Anyway, TFTP is blocked from the firewall, so we're not copying it to the
TFTP server and back as originally planned, and I thought config m. would
work, but it's a no go. Can anyone think of a way to change the startup
config but not implementing those changes in the running config. (I'm not
asking WHY someone would do this, just if it's possible)

Re:

2000-07-06 Thread Babashola Madariola

I don't really have Frame-Relay in mind.
The scenerio is this, I have a serial interface which is down when I typed the
command SHOW INTERFACES
i.e. serial1 is down, line protocol is down ...
When I go to interface serial1 and type no shutdown, the interface appears to
come up,
and when I type Show interfaces serial 1, I have the output :

serial1 is up, line protocol is down ...

Now get the picture?

Thanks once again for the response and the contribution to knowledge.

You can still order the 11.3 as a 2 bundle set..

http://www1.fatbrain.com/asp/bookinfo/bookinfo.asp?theisbn=1578701368

12.0 IOS books look like they have to be ordered separately. You can find
them all on fatbrain, just search for "Cisco IOS" or look here at the
CiscoPress site

2) Config and Command texts are a complete set of books. I have heard that
they now cost $600 for the set. I haven't found where to order them. In the
old days I received them without charge when purchasing a router. Just had
to push the point.

As an example I have the 11.1 set. The first book is titled "Configuration
Fundamentals Configuration Guide"
Customer order number DOC-CFCG11.1=
Text part number 78-2421-01 (successive books increment this number
78-2422-01 etc.)
Not sure if there is one part number for the entire set. It would seem that
there should be.

Can anyone make this more clear??

Passed BSCN/Routing 2.0

2000-07-06 Thread Ms. Maria

Hello my friends,

As I I had heard about ACRC that it's a tough exam. It (Routing 2.0 now)
was tough for me. I tried to prepare main outlines from Cisco site by
different sources. But still, there were questions that I didn't knew they
were part of Routing. :>
I don't have experience with Cisco devices, just learning them now.
I studied it for one week, from ACRC book and CCO(best source)..before exam
I was confedent that I know enough but believe me It was just primary level.
So my three words for exam are: study, study and study.
Know VLSM, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP and how they do summarization and General stuff
about Routing (off course).
61 questions 75 mins

I have a question: When we answer Survey and put comments, are they used
for exam scores? I think NO...But then why before Survey, it says that
Cisco will use it to better score our exams?

Best regards,
Maria

RE: changing startup configs without changing running configs

2000-07-06 Thread Jorge Rodriguez

In this scenario, I would by any means, copy your running-config
somewhere, no TFTP ? then local console or from inside firewall.
I still don't know if you could backup your running-config just from local
console, I know you could do IOS image from console alone, so, I don't see
why you could do it for run and start files.

Anyways, backup that running-config and then make the changes you want
startup-config to have, then write mem, copy back your original
running-config and that should be it.

If non of these is posible, then talk to the firewall admin guys
to aloud extended ip access list for TFTP port, or standard ip access list
pointing to your IP address if security is a concern.

Visio template

2000-07-06 Thread Brian Keyser

Here is the Visio generic template that was on Cisco's TAC page about a year
and a half ago.

NOTE: If you are trying to make a diagram that is anything but Visio format
you need to do the following:

1. make a copy of your diagram.
2. select all objects in the diagram with the Cntrl-A function.
3. select the ungroup icon
4. save your document as a .tiff, .jpg, .html etc

There is a problem with the export filters. They can not properly export
compound shapes.
However, sometimes when you ungroup you will ungroup your shapes like the
routers, switches etc.

Microsoft is releasing SR1 for the Visio 2000 line, and is now working with
the export filter vendor to fix this "enhancement", which exists in both
Visio 2000 and Visio 5

Hi

I am preparing to take the BCMSN exam. As many of you I am using
material catered for the CLSC.
Besides knowing the Cat. 1900, 2820, 3000 and 5000 series switches,
what new switches should one know prior to taking the BSMSN. I looked at
the Outline and Preparation Guild for the BSMSN, however, it makes no
mention of any particular series of switches.

Thanks

RFP process for Cisco equipment

wondering if someone could provide me with some web sites of well known
companies that sell Cisco equipment as I am looking to purchase three 3548

suggestions.

Exam info for BCRAN?

2000-07-06 Thread Lonnie Paschall

Anyone have any tips for the BCRAN exam 505? I am scheduled to take the exam
this monday and any last minute tips would be appreciated. I have been using
the Cisco Building Ciso Remote Access networks book and cisco.com to
prepare. I am going the CCNP 1.0 track as I have already passed ACRC and
CLSW. I decided at the last minute to take the BCRAN instead of the CMTD
because I had no experience with the older cisco routers that are on the
CMTD. Again, any help would be appreciated.

Re: Easy Brain Teaser (Switching)

2000-07-06 Thread Kevin L. Kultgen

That was my first thought but isn't STP supposed to finish after 30 Seconds?
Not the several minutes indicated in the problem. I was thinking that the
server doesn't appear to be rebooted, sooo I'm thinking it's the ARP
table of the Switch If the server was rebooted or had sent out a
network comm... (a simple ping) the switch would have realized that the
server was now on a new port. But the switch had to wait until the server
sent out a comm of some sort (NetBIOS Broadcast, WINS replication,
...whatever...) to update the ARP table

I kinda remember something from groupstudy a looonnn time ago (in a
galaxy far, far away...) about a failover server that had a similar problem
because it had the same MAC address as the original server. When the
original went down the failover had to notify the switch that that MAC
address was now on a new port

And may I add that the command :
  router(config-if)#clock rate bps
gave the following:
%Error: This command applies only to DCE interfaces

However int s0 which is shutdown does not give such error when the above command

is applied to the interface.
But that doesn't mean that it's already made a DCE.

RE: Secondary IP address

2000-07-06 Thread Diegmueller, Jason (I.T. Dept)

: What are the advantages of using a secondary IP on and
: ethernet interface

Advantage? Other then the fact it can be used to "patch together"
two networks in a bind, none. It can be considered harmful for
performance. Imagine:

Router: 10.0.0.1/24, and 172.16.0.1/24 secondary
Host A: 10.0.0.2/24
Host B: 172.16.0.2/24

Both hosts and the router are going to a single hub. Host A needs
to communicate with Host B. By utilizing it's IP and subnet mask,
Host A determines Host B is NOT on it's local network and thus
sends the packet to it's default gateway (the router).

The router, having the secondary address, knows that the destination
network (172.16.0.0/24) is actually on the same interface it just
received the packet from. So it ends up ARPing for Host B and
reencapsulating the packet right back out the same interface it just
came in from.

All return communication by Host B must go along the same path (Router-->
Host A) even though they are technically on the same wire.

Obviously, you would never want to design a network like this from the
ground up, but it's sometimes necessary until you're able to readdress,
redesign, or whatever the case may call for.

Access List thoughts....

2000-07-06 Thread John Mairs

Hi,

I was wondering a couple of things and wanted to know
if someone could shed some light this. Since, when
doing access lists (un-named), you use protocol number
ranges (eg.800-899 IPX Std., 100-199 IP ext., etc.)why
then do they "require" that you mention the protocol
when applying it to the interface (IP
access-group..bla bla bla) when by virtue of being
forced to use ranges this makes which protocol you are
using clear anyway. Or in reverse, why are ranges
necessary if you indicate which protocol it is you're
using when you apply the list.

Also, I am a bit confused as to when you would ever be
able to get any use out of using a wildcard mask on
the host portion of an IPX address in an access list.
What I mean by that is I can understand its use in IP
since you assign the Network.Host number but since IPX
uses the BIA of the card for the host, the odds of
having a range in any kind of sequence seems
astronomical.

Just some things that were bugging me... thanks.

Hello Friends...

I am planning to take reverse
turn from routing & switching to wan switching, as i my
work responsibilities are related more on wan technologies rather
than routing or upper layers. I idea or
suggestion would be appreciated.

I bought a book for CCNA WAN

installation details of IGX/BPX/MGX, I expect in exam there will no questions

I agree with point#1, but not point#2. The original route-map was like so...

>> route-map test permit 10
>> match ip address 10
>> set interface serial0
>>
>> route-map test permit 20
>> set interface serial1
>>
>> access-list 10 permit 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
>>

Sequence #20 in the route-map, because it contains no match and is a permit
statement, is going to act like a "permit ip any any" at the end of an
access-list. So anything that doesn't match sequence #10 will definitely
match #20 and be sent out serial1 (once the 'set' command syntax has been
corrected). The packets wouldn't be dropped unless it was a deny statement.

RE: EXAM INFO CCNP 2.0

2000-07-06 Thread Croyle, James

Don't study the CLSC. I did buy that book in order to take the old version,
and subsequently took a BCMSN KnowledgeNet course, the format and material
is TOTALLY revamped. I took the BCMSN and got 850 on it. The BCMSN is very
straight forward, but you have to understand VLANs and multilayer switching
hands down. The BOSON.COM tests were moderately helpful in identifying the
topics I was weak on, but were much more detailed than the cert test. It is
a concept test.

Ok, now I have a question of those who have taken the new BCSN test, in
relation to the BCRAN one. In BCRAN, when you need to type in commands, you
are given a list of 75 or so to choose from. Is the BCSN the same format,
or like the old ACRC exam where you type it from your head??

Thanks for the general info!!!

As promised, I have posted the practice questions for the Cisco Lan
Switching Configuration (640-404) or Building Cisco Mulitlayer Switched

http://www.openwindow.com/pages/wfusers.htm. I will be making up other
questions for the BCRAN and the CIT 2.0 exams. In order to get those you
MUST provide me with your contribution to the practice questions. A minimum
of 3 chapters is required. I am starting with the BCRAN test as of today.

2000-07-06 Thread E. Carolina Arias S.

I tried to answer your question individually, but I got a msg. saying my
mail address was blocked on your site or something like that... However
this is what I wanted to say:
Check the position of your MFT card. Look at the rear of your MC3810.
If the card is on the left most slot (on the dvm card) it is in the "voice"
position and you will not have it working for wan. In this case, on the
config you'll see controller E1 1 (As you're pointing below). The
card must be on the "wan" position on the slot right above the eth. port.
Then it will appear in the config as controller E1 0. Following
I show you part of the config. of two routers with the MFT card in one
and the other position...

hostname WAN_MFT

Fw: Easy Brain Teaser (Switching)

2000-07-06 Thread Roberta J. Flinn

This has to do with the learning (cam table) in the switch. The entries are
set to age out of that table after a preset number of minutes. Until the
older entry "ages out" the switch will see the same MAC address on two
different ports. It cannot make a switching decision so it does not send to
either port. To solve this issue - you can issue a "clear cam dynamic"
command. This will flush the CAM table and force the switch to rebuild it
with the correct information. (Note: can cause additional traffic for a few
moments because the switch will flood packets destined for unknown MAC
addresses out all ports except the one from which it received the packet.)

Ironic.

When I was whipping up that original email, I had put

me on the contiguous network thing, and I didn't feel like

2000-07-06 Thread Rampley, Jim

I just recently was called out to a customer site who was complaining that
while they were using Norton Ghost sometimes they would get great throughput
and other times it would be dog slow. The workstation being ghosted was
plugged into a switch port at 100 full on a cat 5000 and the server was

Since the addresses are already contiguous we are planning on changing the

Obviously, you would never want to design a network like this from the

redesign, or whatever the case may call for.

RE: Cisco Career Track Advise

2000-07-06 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I always go to http://www.amazon.com and search for books related to the
subject I am studying for. I then compare the reviews from other people who
has already read the books, and when I have found the book I would like to
buy, I go to another (less expensive) online-bookstore and order it.

Some of the early terrible books I bought on-line could have been avoided if
I had read the reviews about them first.

Good luck with your wan switching,

Ole

P.S. You should search for the book you already bought and see on the
reviews if that helped other candidates who attended the exam.

Hello Friends...

I am planning to take reverse turn from routing & switching to wan
switching, as i my work responsibilities are related more on wan
technologies rather than routing or upper layers. I idea or suggestion would
be appreciated.

I bought a book for CCNA WAN SW..looks great but bit upset as part II in
it gives more hardware or installation details of IGX/BPX/MGX, I expect in
exam there will no questions about fans & trays..

thanks

This is my understanding:
No, the survey answers are not used to score your individual exam. The
answers you give to the survey questions are used to better design exams and
questions based upon the level of expertise that folks rate themselves at.
If everyone who took a test rated themselves as novices, and then passed,
Cisco may increase the difficulty of that test so that "novices" couldn't
pass as easily. On the flip-side, if everyone rated themselves as experts,
and subsequently failed the test, Cisco would have reason to suspect the
test is too hard.

LOL.

You know, I distinctly remember mumbling this to myself after setting up my
first PIX and then trying for the next hour to figure out why the blasted
thing wouldn't let any traffic through - even though everything 'looked'
right, of course.

RE: Easy Brain Teaser (Switching)

2000-07-06 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

I've seen this "problem" quite often, and it's helpful that you've brought this up.

In the Catalyst 5000/5500 series switch, the MAC address to port mapping table keeps
entries for 5 minutes (or 300 seconds) by default. When you switch ports (say, moving
a server from a test room to the production location), the table waits the aging time
before the old MAC address/port mapping is removed. This creates the lack of
connectivity you reference.

The aging of the MAC address to port mapping can really play havoc with one's mind
when the default has been changed to the maximum of 20 minutes (someone's decided that
changing this value will optimize switch and network performance). This leaves the
administrator scratching their heads for 20 minutes wondering why they don't have
connectivity.

FYI : Cisco 700 series acting weird

2000-07-06 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

For those of you administering any 700 series routers, this e-mail could end
up saving you a lot of wasted time.

I had a 762 which suddently went haywire. When I powered it on, all led's
except for NT1 flashed and ended up being on steady. No communication
whatsoever came out of the box to my portable unit I had connected it to via
the console cable, so I finally declared it dead.

I called Cisco and was able to get it replaced with a refurbished one for
$150.00, but I had to wait two weeks before I finally got it.

I connected the "new" one, and the exact same weirdness happened. I was sure
that they by mistake had sent me my defect router back, but after I checked
the serial number, I had to accept that it was a different box.

Then I got this crazy idea of trying a power supply from one of the working
routers, and then it came up fine. I have seen much in my 13 years as a
professional computer guy, but I had never seen a power supply having that
kind of effect on the device it supplied the power to. I mean, normally
either it works or not.

Now I realized that I had replaced a perfectly okay router with a similar
one for $150.00 but I was not any closer to a working solution. I called
Cisco again and asked them about a price on that power supply, and that was
also $150.00. I tried to explain that I had just kind of given away a good
router to them for the same price and asked if they couldn't break a piece
of the price - but that was not possible. I I then called the company
(Artesyn) that made these power supplies, but they could not sell me one
without a written permission from Cisco (that is far out).

If anyone knows a good place to get this power supply for less than $150.00
- please let me know.

And now to the moral of this story: Don't ever throw away a possible cause
of a problem with the thought "No, it could never be because of that".

I hope this will help at least one of you out there - this has been taking
too much of my time already.

Have a great day,

Ole

To CCNP 2.0's

2000-07-06 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

This is kind of a funny question, but could you please match the numbers
with the letters in accordance with your experience?

1 : CCNA 2.0
2 : Routing 2.0
3 : Switching 2.0
4 : Remote Access 2.0
5 : Support 2.0

A : Easiest
B : More Difficult
C : Hard
D : Harder
E : Hardest

Thanks,

Ole
