Re: Cisco Prerequisites

2000-08-06 Thread Oz

Erik,

That took about 2 minutes to find on the web and you probably needed
service pack applied ..
Thats what the hell that means and we all know you hate windows and thats
fine .
But please you cannot tell new folks to forget it .. I have worked in
huge enviroments that had lots of NT and windows and many issues would
not have been solved if my knowledge of NT was not there..
As a router dude you can get a lot of issues that can SEEM to be wan
related when in fact it can be simple desktop/server issues..
Sure there are many folks out there that know networking and unix but also
by not knowing NT windows could limit those same folks too .
Just like my limited Unix limits me .too.
And for folks just starting up NT is fine as chances are they will start
at the desktop anyhow ..
And there is not many unix desktops around these days .
And whether you like it or not Cisco is making more stuff for NT all the
time and there are some that are NT windows only ..
I don't care for any particular OS to me they all are the same.. But I
have to care because many places are multi OS environments and you need to
know a little about them all.
And I am not trying to start an OS war here just trying to give some
balance here..
The market has shifted and thats a fact and so will the workforce have to
shift in the direction of the market it's just that simple..
For someone on a limited budget NT can help them out sure they can do
Linux but right now there is not much market for entry level Linux folks.
Whereas win NT desktop there is tons of work..

And for Adedapo MTA errors usually are due to corrupted databases but I
have not played with exchange for a long time. But usally running MTACHECK
will fix it

3620 Modem Pooling

Hello colleagues,

do you know if it is possible to configure different modem pools on a 3620 ?
And if so, does it matter what kind of modem module I use

use the modem-pool IOS command ?
Thanks in advance for your help, I couldn't find any docs online on this.

Re: Cisco and the Montgomery GI Bill

2000-08-06 Thread joel.studtmann

I know this is an old question, but as I did some research on it as well:

Yes, you can use the G.I. Bill (both flavors) with Cisco Training as long as
the course is given by an accredited training center.

If you are still active duty, you can use Army Tuition Assistance as well,
knowing the following restrictions:
(This is assuming you are or were Army; I don't know how the G.I. bill
supports other branches of service)

TA pays for semester hours, not classroom hours. TA CAN be used for
technical training taken in a short term environment (i.e., a week class for
ACRC, or such), but it converts the classroom hours to semester hours by
dividing by 15. I.E., if you take a week ACRC course (Say, 40 classroom
hours), you can get 2.67 semester hours of TA.

TA normally will pay for up to 75% of tuition; however, there is a cap of
approximately $175 per semester hour. (I don't recall the exact figure, but
I remember it being in the high $100s). While the $350 assistance might be
useful in a Cisco Networking Academy, the only courses offered over here are
priced to corporations, not individuals, and still paying $1650 of a $2000
course for personal use is out of my price range.

If you are still in the Army, either Active Duty, Reserve / NG, or
civilian (GS system), email me. There are some free IT available.

Re: CBT Training Options (CCNP)

2000-08-06 Thread Joel Studtmann

I'm afraid that I've already deleted the first part of this thread (After a
vacation in Spain, and skimming 2600+ messages), so if someone's already
said this, then... Well, sorry for the repeat, and whoever said it must be
incredibly smart :)

Anyway, I've found that Smartforce has some decent CBTs for many subjects,
including Cisco. I'm not sure on pricing, as they're paid for by my
organization.

Some caveats:

  1) In their defense, the courses I have were downloaded four or five
months ago, and if there were any updates to their courses, I didn't have
them.

  2) Their courses are, overall... pretty good, but somewhat lacking in
quality control. Whoever edited the OSPF course in ACRC 11.3, I recall,
should be dragged out into the street and beaten severely a few times. I
only recall a few errors or 'inconsistencies' in the course material itself,
but the biggest problems were are in the practical exercises. Sometimes,
I'll complete the exercise and be told that I did it incorrectly. When I
gave up and clicked the 'Show me' button, the course did the exercise the
same way I did.

  3) Again, the OSPF course sticks in my mind, but I found errors in the
practical exercises in the DCN and OSPF courses, as well. I did part of the
BCRAN course later, and it seemed to be pretty good.

  4) Overall, if you have access to them (your company has already paid for
them), take them. I couldn't have passed the DCN test without the course,
as their were several questions asking 'What is the third step in xx',
that Priscilla's book didn't cover. Priscilla's book is outstanding, but it
wasn't designed to teach the test.

  5) Smarforce is also behind on updating their Cisco courses. They just
released BCMSN while I was in Spain (just in time for me to take), but they
still haven't done BSCN, or CIT.

My two bits,

Joel Studtmann

There are a lot of errors on this book I agree. Here's 2 of them I

I think it's mostly typo but someone who's not familiar with it might

Subject: F/R illegal mask question

Sorry, but I couldn't find the answer to this in the
 groupstudy archives...

2500/2600 Router (can't recall exact model): IOS ver
 11.3.x

 Int s0/0 (module)

 encapsulation frame-relay
 point-to-point
 ip classless

Not the exact copy, but you get the idea. We set up
the 10.0.0.1 address for the int, but it won't take
 ANY subnet mask besides 255.0.0.0.

Is this s/thing to do with the IOS? the F/R interface?
s/thing we didn't add? Did add incorrectly?

 Thanks!

Re: DTE or DCE?

2000-08-06 Thread Kenneth

Example:
1 2501 Router
1 2503 Router
1 DTE-DCE Cable

To connect both router and have them communicate with each other, connect
DTE end of the cable to S0 of 2501 and connect DCE end of cable to 2503's
S0. This is just an example. You can always revers it or connect it to any
other serial port as you think might fit your needs.

Whichever is the router with the "DCE" end connected, go to it's serial (S0)
and configure add the line "clock rate 64000" or any other speed you want it
to provide to simulate a real connection. I use "clock rate 100".

After that, you can give both ends of the connection ip addresses and "no
shutdown" and the line will be up (with the default HDLC encapsulation).

Normally, a router connects to a DCE device like a CSU/DSU to connect via T1
connection because DCE devices provide clocking to the DTE device. since
you're "simulating" a real connection, one of the DTE device has to be
configired as a DCE device that provides clocking. hope this helps.

DSL modem to 2500 router

2000-08-06 Thread Kenneth

Does anyone know if there's a special cable that goes out of the ethernet
port of a standard DSL modem and in to the serial port of a 2500 router
(DB60) ? I don't think the signalling is the same but, hey, I might find
some surprising answers from CCIE gurus!

If that won't work, I guess I'll have to settle for a 633DSL modem from
Cisco... pretty expensive stuff for a modem.

If you want just data, aeronet is great, if you want voice + data and you
have a boatload of money to spend you should look at the wavespan wireless
gear.

100mb ethernet + 2 T1 circuits. We use the 100mb for data and the 2 T1
circuits that come off the wireless radios to do voice over. They also
make 10mb/sec and 20mb/sec models (both including the T1's).

2000-08-06 Thread jjessen

All,

Just to add my 0.02 worth.

A good rule of thumb to keep in the back of your mind (actually, it's better off
being at the front) when designing, managing [proactively :-)], or just plain ol
lurchin from crisis to crisis is that the internetwork is there to provide a
business need for the end user. That business need is invariably implemented
across a variety of platforms, hence a hodge podge of protocols all glued
together somehow to provide seemless, transparent (to the user preferably)
connectivity and services.

So, you still awake?, it would be advantageous to get to know one OS well and at
least become familiar with the peculiarities of all the others (particularly if
they're in your domain!).

RE: Cisco Prerequisites

2000-08-06 Thread Chuck Larrieu

To soften this a bit, I strongly recommend the reading of Eric Greenberg's
Network Application Frameworks

Eric is another one of those guys who used to post here a lot. ( haven't
heard from him in a few months ) He and I struck up something of a rapport
when I discovered he and I shared the concern about fingerpointing in
troubleshooting exercises. For example, in his Preface, he lays out a
scenario in which "The company's sales staff has called a meeting with the
IS department to discuss the increasingly poor performance of their
worldwide sales processing application." Having been called to meetings like
this, in more than one organization, I learned very early in my career how
to take steps to determine what the real problem is, not the apparent one.
one of the reasons I find Howard's writing so interesting as well )

The point Eric makes, and one all of us needs be aware, is that there are
many reasons that network performance can be negatively effected. Cisco
places quite an emphasis on protocol behavior in its design certification
test. Probably because in the experience of Cisco, thorough understanding of
protocol behavior goes a long way toward designing good solid networks with
good performance. We see questions regularly on this group and elsewhere
asking questions, the answers to which come from understanding how NetBIOS
over TCP or certain UNIX functions operate. Let alone IP itself.

In return, my strong opinion is that folks who do not spend the time
learning how networks work, and how the different parts interact, who just
want to be router jockeys, will certainly find themselves at the lower ends
of both the pay scale and the promotion scale. I know I am truly impressed
by a number of people I have met through this list, people who have taken
the time and put in the effort to learn Unix, and Linux, and Microsoft and
Novell. Folks like these have offered a lot of good advice and good insight
to problem solving questions that appear here regularly.

RE: CCNA 2.0: Advise needed, I took v2 on July 2 and a little thoughts for people new to the field

2000-08-06 Thread Butcher, Matthew

The passing score was 82%, I only got 87% and thought I would fail it during
the whole 1.5hrs.
I went to a Cisco Training partner for ICND "Interconnecting Cisco
Networking Devices" and studied the CCNA 507 book.
I also, like today, spent my weekends in my work lab doing all the
labs. The test was harder than any MCSE test I took and I am glad. The new
test ?s are about a paragraph long and some have multiple choice all the way
out to f.
For anyone deciding to get into IT profession I suggest two things,
if you are fresh out of school, get you CCNA and buy a router to do you
labs, classes are good but if out of pocket then I suggest a book and a
router, then try to work for one of these consulting firms.
If you are older and trying to break in the market you probably have
a better chance getting your MCSE or close to it, then work on a help desk
with the intent to move into operations.
These thoughts are based on 10 years of Networking field work in
Ukraine, Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Germany, and east coast state side
dealing w/ Private companies, US Foreign governments.

Hope this helps,
Matt

2000-08-06 Thread Chuck Church

Keep in mind that when Cisco puts 'load' on an interface, it's only refering
to transmit, not total. It seems like the versions of IOS ending in 'T'
list both 'tx load' and 'rx load' for convenience. Also, since this is
ethernet, does packets and bytes received on the interface refer to all
traffic on the wire, or just that destined to this router. I'm thinking
that it's only traffic destined to the router, so there might be much more
traffic on the wire than the rx counters are telling you. Get a sniffer and
look at utilization with that. Or if your hubs have a little utilization
meter (most 3Com's do), what does it show? If you're hitting 50%
frequently, it's time for a switch or 100 mb.

Chuck Church
CCNP, MCNE, MCSE

Ok, not sure what everyone has recommended here, but the load you have on
the interface is 4/255 which I believe is a running 5 minute average so
taking workstations off the segment is not correct IMHO. Also where you
are
right now is .03% which is below the .1% tolerance acceptable. So...
reset the counters, and see over the next 10 to 30 minutes what happens,
(resend the show int to us).

That path is very logical. It has you going from workstation to server to
infrastructure. It will give you a good perspective. And it's CCNA not
CNNA.

Best of luck to you!

I have no working experience in the IT field, and am considering a career
change.I want the CNNA certification,I am considering the following path--A
plus certification(self study), MCSE (instructer led training), CNNA
(instructer led training)
Does this path seem logical?? I would appreciate a response from anyone.

RE: Cisco Prerequisites

2000-08-06 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Chuck

No argument about what you're saying in the small to medium
enterprise, or resellers that deal with this market. If you are
working with ISPs, telcos, or enterprises large enough to effectively
be their own ISP, the application protocol knowledge is much less
important. Believe me, there's more of a shortage of people with a
solid understanding of Internet exterior routing than there is for
people who know both basic to intermediate IP plus Microsoft or
Novell.

UNIX user knowledge, not necessarily system administration, does tend
to be important in the provider environment, where Microsoft has not
penetrated nearly as far.

No knowledge, of course, is useless. I've just spent a couple of
days involved with planning network products for, among other things,
third generation wireless. Some knowledge of image transfer, HTML and
XML, WAP, etc., certainly was relevant there, although what was more
important than the application protocols was their traffic
characteristics and quality of service requirements. I did get
extensively into network infrastructure such as DNS, address
assignment, etc. Now, remember I am working as a product architect,
so my day-to-day work will differ from people more operationally
oriented. On the other hand, I have to specify products that the
market will buy.

If that won't work, I guess I'll have to settle for a 633DSL modem from

Re: CCNA v2.0 Todd Lammle Book

2000-08-06 Thread Kenneth

Yeah, it's the 507 and here are the pages:
1) page 40 = RJ-45 connector pinouts -- it shows from 8-1, should've been
1-8. It's ok if it was done this way with a straight cable (although
unrecommended) but he showed the crossover cable pinouts in the non-reversed
order.
2) page 499 = int s0.16 point-to-point -- I think this should have been
multi-point...
3) page 457 = router(config)#ipx input-sap-filter --- he should have
included the access-list number as in: ipx input-sap-filter list# to show
the reader that there is parameters to be entered after the command.

Hope this helps.

2000-08-06 Thread Scott Nelson

Very good points. This happens more than people think.

For example:
When Joe Blow can't get his webpage to come up or it is slow because of a
DNS problem/issue, as far as he is concerned, his network sucks.
All he thinks is that the network is really slow and the idea gets to other
people and thinks escalate from there. Now, me, doing *just* the network
portion of it, don't see any congestion issues or other problems but now I
am responsible for doing my own investigation to find the real issue and
telling the DNS admin why their DNS is having issues but have to provide
proof that it is their fault before I do. Well, in order to do that, I have
to know how the darn thing works.

Same thing with anything else on the network, it is wise to find out how the
networks attached device works, or you could find yourself getting blamed
for the network being problematic when in fact, it is something else on the
network failing or improperly configured.
Anybody can be a ( insert cert here ), but it takes someone who knows how
the whole system works to keep the network as a whole running and to be
proactive in preventing problem(s) before they arise.

Can you tell I have been bit once or twice? g
I'll tell ya this much, The buck always stops with me. ;-)

I don't care for any particular OS to me they all are the same.. But I
have to care because many places are multi OS environments and you need to
know a little about them all.
And I am not trying to start an OS war here just trying to give some

The market has shifted and thats a fact and so will the workforce have to

For someone on a limited budget NT can help them out

RE: DSL modem to 2500 router

2000-08-06 Thread Chuck Larrieu

To quote a sage, what is the problem you are trying to solve?

The short answer is no you cannot find or create some kind of adapter cable
to run between the ethernet output of your DSL router to the serial input of
your 2501 router. Why? Because ethernet is different than serial. Never the
twain shall meet.

The fact that you ask the question, though, indicates that you have in mind
some problem you are trying to solve. What is it? Are you using the router
as a firewall? What is your current network design? Where does the DSL
router fit into this design?

With better information as to your goals and desires, folks here will be
better able to provide suggestions that meet your requirements.

Just run Cat 5 the DSL modem to an Ethernet port of the 2500 and use an
AUI

Does anyone know if there's a special cable that goes out of the
ethernet
port of a standard DSL modem and in to the serial port of a 2500 router
(DB60) ? I don't think the signalling is the same but, hey, I might find
some surprising answers from CCIE gurus!

If that won't work, I guess I'll have to settle for a 633DSL modem from
Cisco... pretty expensive stuff for a modem.

CCDP 1.0 after old track retired

2000-08-06 Thread Huffaker

I am a CCNP with the CCDA completed all under the
1.0 track. After reviewing the archives I am a still a bit confused.
The CID 3.0 (640-025) test did not retire.
When I look at my test track it shows my CCDP 1.0
"in progress" only lacking the CID 3.0 test.
When I look at http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/exam_list.htmit
would indicate there is noCCDP 1.0 track (since all tests have been
retired).
When I look at http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/lan/programs/ccdp.htmlit
would indicate that I can't exceptthe following paragraph from the same
page would indicate that I can finish a CCDP 1.0:

"What if I'm in the process of
achieving my CCDP certification? If you have completed part of your
recommended training and #640-4XX and 640-025 exams for CCDP certification, you
should complete any remaining exams with the #640-5XX and 640-025 CCDP exams.
Please note the recommended training for the #640-5XX exams are different, so
candidates who took the original curriculum may require some additional
self-study or may choose to take the new recommended training courses. All
recommended training will be available as instructor-led and e-learning
courses"

Would it be safe to assume that by passing CID 3.0
I would become CCDP 1.0???

APS Suggestions...

2000-08-06 Thread HILVING, JAMES (SBIS)

I have a problem with APS for Packet over Sonet. I have two GSRs side by
side connecting to the same ISP. I have GSR-1 set as the Active and GSR-2 as
the Protect side. Everything fails over apropriate if I shut or pull the
cable on the Active side.

The problem is when GSR-1 with the Active POS interface is shut down or
reloaded the secondary POS interface on GSR-2 never comes out of protect
mode.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: Technical Book Editing - WAS: CCNA v2.0 Todd Lammle Book

2000-08-06 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

This is a topic maddening to all involved. Some things are preventable. Some
aren't. Some things there is no excuse for.

Long past history, but the first edition of the Syngress CCNA book had some
rather egregious errors - wrong network numbers and the like. I no longer
have the book, but I recall one where the question talked about subnet X and
the only answers were subnets A, B, and C. And I mean whole classes of
networks wrong.

I'm currently reading a very good book called Quality of Service by Paul
Ferguson and Geoff Huston.

Both authorities in the field. I've coauthored RFC2071 with Paul,
who is a consulting engineer for Cisco, and Geoff is another author
in the Wiley Networking Council series. He's the technical guru for
Telstra in Australia.

Geoff has a newer book that goes beyond the Quality of Service book,
dealing with ISP performance issues.

What mars my enjoyment are a number of simple
spelling errors - fat finger kinds of things. It is as if the editor just
decided not to use his spell checker because of all the technical terms it
would choke on. The result is quite unprofessional.

I have even found a technical error or two in books by some rather well
known participants in this group.

These things do not necessarily diminish the value of these sources. But
they can lead to a lot of frustration, particularly among folks just
starting out.

Chuck

Since I'm in the process of turning in the final copy edit today for
my new book, The WAN Survival Guide, believe me, I know there can be
errors. And I caught a few things my copy editor didn't. My technical
reviewer is Scott Bradner, but there are some things that even he
didn't spot. Frankly, this is one reason I prefer writing things on
the design side -- the concepts are important, and there's less of a
danger of screwing up things by getting a command syntax wrong.

There's no simple answer. An author can proof his own work only to a
certain extent. Your eye sees what you meant, not necessarily what
you wrote. At the larger publishers, you can't expect the copy editor
to spot technical problems. One of the nice things about
CertificationZone is that Erik Roy, Ken Fleming, and Rob Roy, who are
at varying stages of the editing process, are getting familiar enough
with the subject matter to backstop me.

Even though RFCs literally are read by dozens of experts while being
drafted, there can be bugs that don't show up until implementation.

It certainly doesn't help when the real exam is looking for an answer
that is technically wrong, but was taken from the Cisco courseware.

The best I can suggest, in exam studies, is never to rely on one
source alone. If for no other than it's easier to learn something
presented from one viewpoint, it's a good idea not to depend on a
single book. Don't be afraid to go back and verify things in the
original standards.

my new book, The WAN Survival Guide, believe me, I know there can be

Follies Answers

2000-08-06 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Thanks everyone for joining in. Hope you all had fun.

The first thing all of you who telnetted in found is that show version did
not work for some reason ;-
One of my points is that there are alternatives to finding information. And
there are ways to find a lot of things through indirection, even in locked
down production environments, even when one has only limited privileges in a
router.

The only commands I permitted were:

Router_1?
Exec commands:
  1-99 Session number to resume
  disable Turn off privileged commands
  exit Exit from the EXEC
help Description of the interactive help system
  logout Exit from the EXEC
  show Show running system information

Router_1

Of the show commands, the only ones I permitted were:

Router_1show ?
  cdp CDP information
flash: display information about flash: file system
  frame-relay Frame-Relay information
  ip IP information
  ipx Novell IPX information
  protocolsActive network routing protocols
  sscopSSCOP

Router_1

Also, I want to thank a number of you who took this as an opportunity to
share some experience and to offer a lesson or two yourselves. For example,
a couple of you did port scans on my router and reported to me what you
found. You also repeated the process and reported after I re-applied the
access-list. The differences between the two findings were interesting to
me, and taught me a little bit more about security.

Here are my answers, and the commands I used to find them:

1) what version of IOS is running?

12.1.2 show flash There is a bit of indirection here. The show flash
command gives the image in flash. The IOS version is contained within the
name of the image. c2500-jos56i-l.121-2.bin 121-2= 12.1.2

2) What is the name of the IOS image?

c2500-jos56i-l.121-2.bin show flash

3) What routing protocols are running?

Eigrp and ipx rip show protocols reveals that ip and ipx routing are
enabled. Show ip route reveals eigrp and static routes. Show ipx route
reveals ipx rip routing. Another bit of indirection.

4) Are there any other routers connected? If so, on what ports?

One router revealed by show cdp neighbor. It is connected through serial 0.
If this were a Cisco certification test, or one of the Boson practice tests,
you would also be expected to infer that there was another Cisco router in
the mix acting as a frame relay switch. But I'm not as sneaky as some people
:-

5) If there are other routers connected, what IOS versions are they running?

12.1.2 - same as the initial router. Show cdp neighbor detail

What are the names of the flash images on those routers, if there are
routers?

Same as the first router - c2500-jos56i-l.121-2.bin show cdp neighbor detail

6) Provide every detail you can about any WAN protocols running

This is inferred based on the show commands available to you.
Frame relay, DLCI 300
Not a lot more you can determine, based on what you are allowed to see.
Show frame-relay pvc

7) What is the privilege level password?

Hard to tell, seeing as you can't get to privilege level, and you can't do a
show run command.

8) What model number router are you telneted into?

2500. show protocol this command reveals what interfaces are on the device.
In my case, you saw an ethernet port and two serial ports. This bit of
indirection, in that you are only able to infer based on what you see. This
is of limited use with modular routers. One might also infer that if the
connected router is a 2500, as revealed by the show cdp neighbor command,
then it is likely that the first router is one as well. 2500's are probably
the most common members of any home lab set up. :-

9) What model number routers are connected, if there are any connected?

2500 ( 2501 ) show cdp neighbor

10) Who played the Cisco Kid? ( extra credit - how did you find that
answer? )

Router_1sh cdp neighbor detail
-
Device ID: DuncanReynaldoPlayedCiscoKid

Sorry - I couldn't resist :-

11) Extra Extra credit - identify all security enabled on the router

Again, a bit of indirection here. The fact that there are very limited
commands available should point to some kind of privilege level limitations.
In general, telnet sessions received a privilege level below normal, using
the privilege level command. At that point those commands I wished to make
available I did so explicitly, using the privilege exec level commands. This
is in line with good security practice, which calls for denying everything
not specifically permitted by policy.

Chuck

P.S if there is interest, I would like to do more of these kinds of things.
Maybe put together some training sessions using the Cisco chat room as the
means of communicating. Any thoughts?

Re: Wireless Networks

2000-08-06 Thread Annlee Hines

I don't think it's fair to say wireless will be "the" network solution, any
more than wired is now. Both will have a place. I would suggest tthat
wireless' share of the market will grow, for a number of reasons.
1. American mobility--we like our information now, thank you very much
2. European preference--wireless is more popular in Europe, for a number of
financial and technical reasons
3. Yu don't have to lay nearly as much wire/fiber to bring the developing
world--and all its human capital--into working communication with the
developed world, which has a human capital shortage.

I have no doubt Cisco will be a significant player, as will a number of
other companies. It is already an explosively growing global market. I would
learn the underlying technology, even theory, as well as the specific
manufacturer's product. As others have pointed out in this forum before, you
can be be a router jockey with hands on; to be more, you must know more.

Re: DSL modem to 2500 router

2000-08-06 Thread Kenneth

Thanks chuck. I knew that Serial and ethernet signalling is different but
hey, I might get lucky! lol.

Well, the deal is, I have configured a 1720 router for a customer that uses
a modem attached to the serial interface of the 1720 and dials out to the
internet. They're somewhere in the sticks in Ohio so at that time, there's
no DSL availability nor Cable connection. They're planning on moving their
office now closer to Cleveland so DSL will be available. They don't want to
spend extra money for a different router (2610). I was thinking about using
a Linksys DSL modem but they all have Ethernet interfaces.

I was thinking of selling him a 2501 router but found out that there's only
one Ethernet interface on this thing. I guess they would have to get a 633
DSL modem from Cisco that has a Serial interface. The customer would rather
spend the money to buy an expensive DSL router than to "throw away" his 1720
since we've spent all this time with it with the VPN, NAT and stuff that he
feels it's a waste of consulting time if we go out and get a new router and
had me come and reconfigure VPN, NAT and what not (rhymes, too!) again on a
new router.

To quote a sage, what is the problem you are trying to solve?

The short answer is no you cannot find or create some kind of adapter
cable
to run between the ethernet output of your DSL router to the serial input
of
your 2501 router. Why? Because ethernet is different than serial. Never
the
 twain shall meet.

The fact that you ask the question, though, indicates that you have in
mind
some problem you are trying to solve. What is it? Are you using the router
as a firewall? What is your current network design? Where does the DSL
 router fit into this design?

With better information as to your goals and desires, folks here will be
better able to provide suggestions that meet your requirements.

 Chuck

Re: Questions about BGP on routing exam

2000-08-06 Thread Peter A van Oene

I'll attack these one at a time below

*** REPLY SEPARATOR ***

On 8/6/00 at 7:10 AM Stephane Wantou Siantou wrote:

I need help with the following exam objectives:
1) Describe BGP synchronization

The rule of synchronization states that no BGP router will advertise a networks
reachability until all other routers within the same AS have learned about the network
via an IGP (Interior Gateway Routing protocol). Synchronization is designed to ensure
that transit AS's (those that pass traffic that is neither originated from nor
destined to themselves) do not accept traffic in via one router and not be able to
proper route the traffic due to other routers not possessing the same routing
information. Another way of looking at is that IBGP routers do not advertise routes
learned from other IBGP routers to other IBGP routers. What that means is, each IBGP
router must learn about routes directly from a source instead of by way of a third
party within the AS.

2) Describe the scalabilitity problems associated with internal BGP

In an AS, by default, all IBGP routers need to know about each other via neighbor
statements to ensure route consistency among other things. This is driven by the
above rule stating that IBGP routers will not pass routing information from one to the
next, but must instead speak directly with each source. This is great with a few
routers, but as more are added, the sheer number of neighbor statements and processing
power required to handled the individual relationships becomes overwhelming.

3)Explain and configure BGP route reflectors

Route Reflectors serve to assist in the above salability issue. Instead of having
every IBGP router peer with every other, certain routers are designated as route
reflectors. These routers are able to pass route information learned from one IBGP
router to others. In this type of configuration, a number of reflector clients can
simply be pointed at designated reflector servers and everything works well.

Here is a sample config.

router bgp 100
neighbor 1.1.1.1 remote-as 100
neighbor 1.1.1.1 route-reflector-client
neighbor 2.2.2.2 remote-as 100
neighbor 2.2.2.2 route-reflector-client

It should be noted that you do not have to configure a router as a route reflector
server, it becomes one automatically when clients point at it.

The following link from Cisco explains all of this 10 times better and in way more
detail.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/idg4/nd2003.htm#13629

Its also been a while since I thought about this stuff so point out where i'm mistaken
if i've misrepresented anything!

Hope this helps!

Good job Chuck. This is exactly what we all need to keep things fresh.

Tell me, what functionality does one need to implement that kind of
lock-down control of a Cisco router? Are you using some kind of RADUIS or

Subject: Follies Answers

Thanks everyone for joining in. Hope you all had fun.

The first thing all of you who telnetted in found is that show version did
not work for some reason ;-
One of my points is that there are alternatives to finding information.
And
there are ways to find a lot of things through indirection, even in locked
down production environments, even when one has only limited privileges in
a
 router.

The only commands I permitted were:

 Router_1?
 Exec commands:
   1-99 Session number to resume
   disable Turn off privileged commands
   exit Exit from the EXEC
help Description of the interactive help system
   logout Exit from the EXEC
   show Show running system information

 Router_1

Of the show commands, the only ones I permitted were:

 Router_1show ?
   cdp CDP information
flash: display information about flash: file system
   frame-relay Frame-Relay information
   ip IP information
   ipx Novell IPX information
   protocolsActive network routing protocols
   sscopSSCOP

 Router_1

Also, I want to thank a number of you who took this as an opportunity to
share some experience and to offer a lesson or two yourselves. For
example,
a couple of you did port scans on my router and reported to me what you

It is connected through serial
0.
If this were a Cisco certification test, or one of the Boson practice
tests,
you would also be expected to infer that there was another Cisco router in
the mix acting as a frame relay switch. But I'm not as sneaky as some
people
 :-

 5) If there are other routers connected, what IOS versions are they
running?

12.1.2 - same as the initial router. Show cdp neighbor detail

What are the names of the flash images on those routers, if there are
 routers?

Same as the first router - c2500-jos56i-l.121-2.bin show cdp neighbor
detail

 6) Provide every detail you can about any WAN protocols running

This is inferred based on the show commands available to you.
 Frame relay, DLCI 300
Not a lot more you can determine, based on what you are allowed to see.
 Show frame-relay pvc

 7) What is the privilege level password?

Hard to tell, seeing as you can't get to privilege level, and you can't do
a
 show run command.

 8) What model number router are you telneted into?

2500. show protocol this command reveals what interfaces are on the
device.
2500's are
probably
the most common members of any home lab set up. :-

 9) What model number routers are connected, if there are any connected?

 2500 ( 2501 ) show cdp neighbor

 10) Who played the Cisco Kid? ( extra credit - how did you find that
 answer? )

 Router_1sh cdp neighbor detail
 -
 Device ID: DuncanReynaldoPlayedCiscoKid

 Sorry - I couldn't resist :-

 11) Extra Extra credit - identify all security enabled on the router

Again, a bit of indirection here. The fact that there are very limited
commands available should point to some kind of privilege level
limitations.
In general, telnet sessions received a privilege level below normal, using
the privilege level command. At that point those commands I wished to make
available I did so explicitly, using the privilege exec level commands.
This

IPX routing question.

2000-08-06 Thread NHK

Hi guys,

I had a problem with IPX and I'm totally lost with it.

Scenario:
My customer change their analogue to digital (64kbps) lease line few days
ago and they were doing bridging
with Microm router. My role there is to change the Microm router to Cisco
1602 routing the IPX traffic to the remote
location which is Cisco 1602 also. My understanding is when I enable the
IPX routing and change their IPX network
number in one of the location (btw, they are using the same network number,
888 I change it) to 887.

Before:
Novell A (802.3, Net 888) -Microm --Analogue lease --Microm
- Novell B(802.3, Net 888)

After:
Novell A (802.3, Net 888) --- 1602 -64k --1602
 Novell B (802.3, Net 887)

Additional info, both of the Novell ethernet are running on novel-ether.

Thanks for the time.

Routing IP and bridging IPX

2000-08-06 Thread Mata

I've got 2621 router connected to a 2610 router via the serial port on a
full T1.
The E0 on the 2621 is connected to a Catalyst 3548 on a port that belongs to
VLAN 1 with 49 workstations and servers using IP 10.1.1.z 255.0.0.0. The E1
is connected to the same 3548 on a port that belongs to VLAN 2 with 20
workstations using IP 172.16.24.z 255.255.255.0. The S0 port is connected to
the S0 of the 2610 thus combingin the 49 wksts to the 20 for a total of 69
wrksts belonging to the same group and connecting to the same servers.

My idea was to bridge IP between the routers, which would make the remote
stations a member of VLAN2 on the 3548. Then route between the E0 and E1
ports (between the 2 VLANs) using the router.

First question, is this possible? If so how (what would my config look like
using 12.1 IOS).
Second question, if it is not possible - any recommendations?
