Well every protocol has a numeric value it represents. It's the same with TCP (protocol 6) and UDP (protocol 17). Hi, My guess is you have replaced your router and used the same IP address. Then not restarted the Solaris box. The Solaris box has the old routers MAC address in its arp table. You will need to restart the Solaris box to get rid of the old ARP entries. This is quite common on Solaris boxes. RE: IOS DHCP vs NT DHCP
I am no fan of NT, but I would choose NT over a router in almost all circumstances. I did have a customer who had a problem with Novell DHCP over the WAN. Win9x users would get "Access Denied" when they tried to release/renew with Winipcfg. I finally worked around with using DHCP on the router. If all you need to do is hand out addresses, I would not be concerned with using the router as DHCP. Our company is experimenting in house with Ip phones that require DHCP to hand out TFTP server addresses as well as some non-standard DHCP options. When I configured the routers as DHCP, I don't recall being able configure all the DHCP options that are available on NT DHCP nor being able to define options, but I didn't specifically look for that either. NT DHCP is easier to manage, the GUI helps here. I would also argue that if you consider DHCP to be a critical service where an hour or 2 of downtime is very bad, NT probably is not the NOS that you want to use, and that IOS would be a better choice. I would not concern myself with router performance while acting as a DHCP. Scott Meyer CCNA, CCDA, MCSE, etc [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Groupstudy Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2001 7:12 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: IOS DHCP vs NT DHCP I beg to differ a little here. If you have ever monitored the DHCP servers utilization, you will have noted it barely creeps over a percent or two...ever. You certainly don't need it running on a high performance computer. It is also very simple to setup and in the event your DHCP server took a dump, you could have another one up and running in about 10 minutes provided you wisely documented your original server parameters. The beauty of DHCP is also in the fact that is leases IP addresses. When a DHCP server crashes it does not affect many clients until their leases expire. In the case of NT, the default lease period is three days I believe. This means you can essentially live without it for quite a few hours, more than enough time to configure and install a new one. Case in point, I once got a call from a IT manager who had his DHCP server take a dive right in front of him. He was managing a 2000 node network and using NT for is DHCP services. He was frantic that his users would start calling him any time to complain about their not being able to get on the network. I told him to calm down and I would be there in about an hour. When I got there I was able to retrieve the old DHCP server config files off the crashed server and rebuild a new DHCP server on a nearby NT workstation (pentium 133 with 32 mb RAM!) and have it up and running in about 45 minutes including the newly installed NT Server OS. There were a couple of users who called in bacause their leases were obviously renewable at that time. I had desktop support reboot their PC's and they were happy. 99% of the users didn't even blink. They went about their business as usual and their PC's happily re-leased their IP addresses from the new DHCP server after their daily shutdowns! Total downtime about 2 hours. I agree with Pricilla to a certain extent in that I would not condone adding DHCP services to a router that performs any kind of routing. I do think it would be a good idea to dedicate an old 2500 for it though. Re: Whew! Can you smell that VLan?
Well I have a bunch of 3548's and you can monitor whatever you please. First figure what port is going to do the monitoring. From that = interface issue the "port monitor" montior command along with the = interface your wanting to capture packets from. port monitor fastEthernet 0/3 =20 and type it in again for another port to monitor. If you don't specify = the interface to monitor it will monitor all the interfaces for the same = VLAN.=20 ""NetEng"" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message = 99bbkk$p8a$[EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:99bbkk$p8a$[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > We have had a pissing match lately and here's the details. RE: a strange question!
My first guess would be to blame the configuration of the solaris box. I do not know the details of that OS. Check your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway (or whatever the solaris equivalent is). For fun find out what is the MAC address of the solaris box. Then do a "show arp" on the router to see if the solaris box's IP and MAC addresses are present. > -Original Message- > From: Zhiping Li [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2001 8:32 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: a strange question! > > > hi,everyone > I encountered a strange question. > I can ping and telnet my router from Windows2K, > but I can't ping and telnet the router from solaris. > Why? > The IOS is "IOS (tm) C2600 Software (C2600-JS-M), > Version 12.0(4)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)" > > Waiting your help. > > > __ > Do You Yahoo!? > Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Re: BRIDGE GROUP!!????
bridge-group protocol ieee uses the 802.1d Spanning tree standard. DEC was the original and is slightly different then IEEE. Similar for IBM. Use IEEE unless your connecting to a legacy device that uses DEC or IBM and doesn't conform to the IEEE 802.1d standard. There's more on this in the archives. A great book by the creator (Radia Perlman) is Interconnections, or you can buy the IEEE 802.1d spec from IEEE. --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > The following is based on bridge groups configured > on Bay equipment. Re: a strange question!
You'll need to give us more information to answer intelligently. Are both devices on the same subnet? Are they attached to the same switch/hub? What addresses and subnet masks are you using? Here are some things to check, specifically: * Addresses and subnet masks * Default gateway setting if router is on a different subnet * Check the Solaris box. Can it ping or telnet to anything? * Access lists. Is it possible that the Solaris device is being affected by a list but the win2k box is not? * Routing. Does the router have a valid route back to the Solaris device? * Cabling. Link lights on the solaris NIC and switch/hub? * Speed/duplex settings on the Solaris device (notice a pattern? ) Check all of that and let us know if you're still having difficulties. Has anyone played much with tacacs or aaa with a cisco 516-cs? I can get tacacs configured, but i keep getting timeouts connecting to the tacacs server. I can ping the tacacs server. Wierd PIX issue - Long
I have PIX 515 w/5.3(1) IOS running and I ran into a problem with SMTP connectivity between two Exchange servers. I have the FW opened up to allow SMTP between Server 1 and Server 2 and everything seemed okay. Now here is the freaky problem. Server 1 receives inbound email just fine, but its outbound email to Server 2 will sit in the queue for a random amount of time before being sent. I hooked up a Sniffer between Server 1 and the FW and the majority of the traffic between the two servers showed "No Response". When I decoded the traffic it looked like Server 1 was sending a reset (RSET) to Server 2 and that is what was causing the problem. After some research on CCO I found an incompatibility with older PIX IOS versions and the "Mailguard" feature. It seems that the Mailguard feature didn't support "ESMTP", which these Exchange servers are using. I thought I had found the problem until I did a little bit more digging and found that this was fixed in IOS 5.2(2) and later with the new support of RFC 1869 for SMTP Service Extensions. So this shouldn't be an issue. The thing that is throwing me off is that A.) Inbound email to Server 1 has no problem. B.) The server admin setup a test servers and both inbound and outbound traffic worked fine through the PIX. C.) Server 2 isn't having any problems getting through the FW. Now here is the kicker...D.) When I disabled "Mailguard" everything is said to be working normally!! I might be paranoid, but I'm starting to think the Exchange guys made some changes on Server 1 and are trying to lead me to believe that it was my FW, but I'm having a hard time dealing with that. The whole denial thing of nothing ever going wrong with Cisco :-|, and the fact that I wasn't involved in the final stage of the troubleshooting. I don't trust many people. Anywayif anyone has ever run into this problem or something similar I would like to hear your story. TIA for all and any responses to my incoherent pleas for mercy! This is especially bad news if all the traffic is destined to a corporate server, for example. You think you're sharing the load across the two links, when actually you aren't. The router learns which interface to use for the destination IP address of the server, puts this info in its fast cache and continues to use that interface indefinitely. On the other hand, if the traffic is going to a diverse set of IP addresses, then the load sharing is more fair. >To achieve load balancing on >a packet by packet basis you need to turn fast switching off. Turning fast switching off might not be a good idea, though, since the packets-per-second for process switching is much slower. You would probably go ahead and make this tradeoff if you saw that the destination-by-destination load "balancing" was not creating any balance whatsoever. Also, you could look into CEF which is smarter about the load sharing. Re: Unicast packets on Cat6K
Depending on hardware/software versions it would be bad if all the traffic is expected to be switched in hardware. Only traffic that the software sees is usually counted. Try using an acl like this: access-l 100 permit ip any any log the log keyword will force the traffic to be switched in software. PS. don't do this on production equipment. -kirk On Wed, 21 Mar 2001, John Kurkjian wrote: > Can anyone explain why incrementing unicast packet counters on a Cat6000 is > a negative thing? Yes, bridge-group are equivalent to vlans and bridge-group protocol ieee refers to the spannin tree version in used it could be dec or something else. Between these 2 switches Are you using trunking (dot1q) or it is just 1 vlan in the whole network?. If you are using trunking, check that the native vlan has been properly configured. Re: BRIDGE GROUP!!????
The following is based on bridge groups configured on Bay equipment. I believe that a bridge group is like a vlan. don't know exactly what the all differences are aside from the bridge groups not being significant outside of the actual switch ( Information not passed on from switch to switch). The Bridge group protocol IEEE probably refers to the version of spanning tree running. (It could also be IBM which is another version of spanning tree used in source route bridging. ) I don't know what your setup is but maybe check the version of spanning tree on the IBM switch. I hope this is helpful. Hi, Be careful trying to sniff all packets you can come unglued. eg, I have a sinffer with a 100Meg card and a switch set to span say 6 ports capable of 100Meg. All 6 ports talk at the same time simple maths tells me that is 600Meg. I will drop a bundle of packets to my sniffer. This can cause some heartache if one is not aware of it happening. I use secondary IPs when the IP scheme is changing (192.168.x.x to 172.16.x.x) and I don't want to take the network down. This way I can change the IPs on the PCs and have no disruption in service. Re: question - oversubscription on switch trunk links... or not?
Did you purposely reverse the 80/20 rule? I ask this in all seriousness. We used to design campus networks with the assumption that 80% of traffic stays local and 20% is destined for a different LAN. That may or may not be valid for your network. With intranets and server farms, the rule became somewhat antiquated. It might be valid to reverse the rule, in fact, but you would have to study your traffic src/dest pairs to know. To determine your network utilization, use the show interface command. You mentioned that you are using show processes cpu, but that might not help you find what you need. On the other hand, if show interface displays input queue drops, show processes cpu might help you determine the protocol which is congesting the input queue. You also mentioned that you are using show ip traffic. I think that command is only good for looking at statistics for traffic destined to the router, not traffic forwarded by the router. Anyway, there's no cut-and-dry answer to your question. Your math looks OK, but it may not be based on the actual amount of traffic your end stations are pumping out and where that traffic is destined to go. Good luck! Keep us posted on what you learn. RE: Whew! Can you smell that VLan?
By default, when you plug a Sniffer into a switch you will only see broadcast traffic for the VLAN that the physical port you are plugged into is a member of. You are however able to "span" ports or VLANs. That is, you are able to "span" an entire VLAN or individual ports to a "monitor" port. This is accomplished with the "span" command on a 6000 or 5000 series Cisco switch. I don't remember the exact syntax for 2900 and 3500 series off the top of my head. After implementing the span, all traffic for the VLAN or port you are spanning to the monitor port will be visible to the Sniffer. The Sniffer is of course plugged into the monitor port. Hope this helps... Chris Lemagie -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of NetEng Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2001 1:46 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Whew! Re: Whew! Can you smell that VLan?
Keep in mind that a VLAN is just a broadcast domain. With a packet capture tool, you capture whatever traffic happens to pop out the port your connected to. Connected directly to a layer 2 switch (bridge) you will see all the broadcast/multicast traffic in the VLAN. *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 3/21/2001 at 3:45 PM NetEng wrote: >We have had a pissing match lately and here's the details. Re: Whew! Can you smell that VLan?
You're both right. Normally plugged into the switch you only see traffic passing through the port on the switch you're on. HOWEVER, you can plug into most switches with a special configuration that allows a workstation to sniff all packets on that switch. It requires 2 NICs configured in a specific way and for the switch to support it. Switch needs to have VLANs mirrored, a regular TCP/IP port plugged in, and the 2nd NIC configured according to documentation of your sniffer. Here's a link for how Sniffer Pro does it: http://www.findarticles.com/cf_0/m0IFW/16_21/54434926/p2/article.jhtml?term= See previous page on that article for a little more info. I did this once and it worked like a charm after I finally gave in & read the docs ;) SO, unless they have access to the switch & VLAN configuration, they can't. That is, unless the uplink for the switch has a hub. Then you can see anything going into or out of the switch, but not within the switch from port-port ;) Allen - Original Message - From: "NetEng" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Newsgroups: groupstudy.cisco To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2001 3:45 PM Subject: Whew! Re: Whew! Can you smell that VLan?
Right and wrong. The IS VLAN is its own broadcast domain and the HR VLAN is its own broadcast domain. By simply hooking up a sniffer to the HR VLAN, you would not see any of the traffic that only transgresses the IS VLAN. If someone from the IS VLAN is going to a device on the HR VLAN, then you would be able to see their traffic. The Catch If you have enable access to the switch, you can hook up a sniffer to a port on the switch and make all broadcast traffic for either VLAN be seen by a certain port. Any questions? Book errors
Has anyone noticed alot of errors in the Osbourne BSCN study guide? I seem to find myself proofreading this book more than studying it. Questions with the wrong answers and the same question twice with 2 different answers: What are the 3 layers of a hierarchical network: my answer Core, Access and Distribution, book answer, Core and Distribution only for 1 question and later on the same question again and they say the answer is Core, Access and Distribution. It really frustrates me to rely on study materials if I cannot rely on the answers being right and having to check everything over. Some diagrams are missing IP adddresses and also in the answers they are putting in IP addresses that are not even on the diagram. Any recommendations as to a better book to get? Should I just go with the Cisco Press books? Thanks. Re: ping dialer in IP address
Hi, As I understand it an interface needs to be up to ping it. You can come unglued from time to time also. We have a heap of people connected to an access router (we have 100's of them) The access routers have a dialer interface is unnumbered with the ip address pointed to loopback 1 eg 10.10.10.1/25. Loopback 0 has an address in a separate subnet eg 192.168.3.4/32. Each of the clients on the dialer has an ip address allocated eg 10.10.10.26. I could ping this guy from anywhere but not from the direct interface or loopback 1 (the same network). Strange you might think. All it is some one else on the dialer interface came in and asked the access router to provide an address. What address does it provide? 10.10.10.1. Therefore when you do a ping it does not reply to the correct place. Loverly little trick. Another rambling that may save you one day. Whew! Can you smell that VLan?
We have had a pissing match lately and here's the details. One person states that a VLan can not be sniffed because it is on a different subnet. The other person says it can becuase it's physically on the same switch. I think you can to a point. Here's what I mean; let's say we have a 3524 with two Vlans, VLAN1 (we'll call it InfoSys), and VLAN2 (called HR). If I have a sniffer running on InfoSys, I should be able to sniff traffic on my subnet as well as traffic from HR to InfoSys (ie HR employee accessing mail server on InfoSys), right? The only difference is that the source MAC address would change. I should not be able to sniff traffic local to HR (ie an employee accessing accounting software) right? Thanks for the ideayes, I have tried from different pc's and even with different terminal connectors/cables, although the one I normally use is a "known good" as it works w/my other 4 routers - no problem. Also the previous owner reset all of the interfaces so getting a telnet connection is not possible. RE: Load Balancing with EIGRP
That is correct assuming that the Port Speed and CIR for both T-1s it the same. If it is not, you will have to use the "variance" command to compensate for this. RE: Question regarding DLCI's...
Hi all, The DLCI's are still of local significance as I understand it. When the company I belong to provide links we might use 17, 18,19 & 20 at the core site on line C12345. At remote end 1 we would most likely use DCLI 17 as the first instance on each remote site. For example, remote site 1 could be R1 on DLCI 17, remote site 2 could be RG23419 on DCLI. You could for some reason want to go from remote sites 1 -> 2 so here you could use R1 DLCI 18 -> RG23419 DCLI 18. Basically I like to think of it as a physical line from the frame switch to your site R1 the a channel (permanent in most cases) PVC relates to the DCLI eg 17. Once into the frame switch all the rules change as it could pass down a very different link on a different PVC between switches. Frome end to end it could look like C123245 DLCI 20 -> sw S1234 DLCI 25 -> sw S4567 DLCI 50 -> sw R4 DLCI 17. You as a client would only know about C12345 DLCI 20 and R4 17. Just a thought I hope helps. RE: Load Balancing with EIGRP
Correct. However, make sure that your bandwidth and delay perameters are equal for the paths over which you want to load share or else it will not load share by DEFAULT. However, with EIGRP, you can force it to unequal-cost load share with the variance command. Re: Load Balancing with EIGRP
Provided these paths are equal metrics in the routing table you will have load balancing. However, if you have fast switching on the load balancing will be on a destination by destination basis. To achieve load balancing on a packet by packet basis you need to turn fast switching off. Re: question - oversubscription on switch trunk links... or not?
Oversubscribed Yes... Likelyhood of it causing an issue... Near none I doubt that you will see the day that your network produces that much bandwidth to cause this to happen... Also remember that half your network sits on one switch (65) and the rest on the other... so even if you were fully used up, nearly half your traffic would be on the same 65 (which has a 32gbps back-plane) Put some SNMP monitors on your LAN and you'll probably see that 95% of the time none of the interfaces are over 10mbps. Load Balancing with EIGRP
Were currently using EIGRP as our routing protocol and we now have two separate T1 connections that were running Frame-relay on. If my understanding of EIGRP is correct, then I shouldn't have to make any modifications to the router in order for load balancing to take effect correct? new Microsoft exams tougher than Cisco's
Hi, group! I took 71-244 (Supporting and Mainaining a Windows NT 4.0 Network beta) today. 110 scenario-like questions in 4 hours and I think it was harder than any Cisco CCNP exam that I passed till now. It's not that the Microsoft stuff is too "difficult" to understand, it's just about the complexity of the questions. I have never understood why Cisco doesn't have more complex questions (scenarios I mean) in its exams. DCN is an exception, but compared with what I saw today, a Cisco exam is quite easy to pass. Re: ccie exam fee
No offense intended- but I have about $10,000 dollars in a homelab sitting right next to me & another $5,000 planned before I take the lab next summer. The fees associated with the written ($300), the lab (another $1,000 or so), & whatever traveling expenses I might incur- seem so inconsequential (now the $4,000 for CCIE lab class will hurt for sure :-) Don't forget the positives- there are people that bill $200 an hour as a CCIE (people in my company). From what I can calculate- obtaining the CCIE will have cost me as much 2 years of college & selling my lab equipment will be the equivalent of winning a new car without having to pay the taxes :o) OK- I'll go back to studying now... RE: Multiple T1's
Could you also configure these as point-to-point interfaces with /30 addresses and run a dynamic routing protocol, i.e. OSPF which would allow for both routes to perform load balancing and failover? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Vijay Ramcharan Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2001 11:31 AM To: Cisco Groupstudy. com Mailing list (E-mail) Subject: Multiple T1's To revisit this question from yesterday, could the following be done and what does it accomplish, if anything? The question posed is below. "Jason Stephens" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message 998ndv$1fh$[EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:998ndv$1fh$[EMAIL PROTECTED]... We have a situation where we want to have 2 t1's going to another office. We want these 2 t1's to not only provide redundancy in case 1 goes down, but also want them to load balance while they are both up. So basically, we want the two t1's to be up providing 3 mpbs of bandwidth and if one goes down for it to automatically send all traffic to the t1 that is still up. We have 3600 series routers on both ends. Can this be done? If so, please explain how. I looked into the Multilink PPP stuff, but it seems to be only for async ports. Thanks for any info in advance! Is this possible to achieve using the solution below? Use a "backup interface" command along with "backup load" and "backup delay" commands to achieve redundancy and load balancing. Both T1's are correctly configured and are connected to the same router. Static routes are used for each T1 using "ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ". By my reasoning, by using the backup interface command on the primary line, if the primary line goes down the second line is used automatically to route traffic. If the primary line exceeds the load specified by the "backup load" command, the second line is put into use automatically. The "backup delay" command just tells the router to stop using the second line when usage on the primary line drops below the predefined load. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. First, no routing protocol load balances. It is the routing table task that makes the final decision about load balancing, with the mode dependent on the switching modes of the output interfaces. Second, any routing protocol, except standard BGP (i.e., without Cisco extensions) and OSPF externals, can produce equal-cost routes eligible for load balancing. Re: Hubs and switches...
The tricky part of the question--and I think someone touched on this before--is that a managed switch is going to have an ARP table and a CAM table, and they're completely different animals. The ARP table is used only when the switch itself is communicating with other IP devices. It will send an ARP request and place any responses in the ARP table. The key is this: the ARP table matches an IP address to a MAC address. The CAM (Content Addressable Memory, IIRC) table is what correlates destination switch ports with MAC addresses. If the switch receives a frame from a device, it places that device's MAC address and incoming port # into the CAM table. The key: the CAM table associates MAC addresses with switch ports. Try changing the baud rate on your PC/laptop. The default is 9600, but the console port can be changed to use 4800, 2400, and 1200 by making modifications to the configuration register. If you can get it to work, start out by doing password recovery by changing the register to 0x2142 and rebooting. This will set it to ignore NVRAM and also reset the console speed back to 9600. Re: Free to good home: Cisco doc CDs (All Gone)
Well, the first 27 folks who emailed me will get their CDs. I encourage anyone else with a couple of new CDs to be generous, as well. At least someone will get some use out of them; better than throwing them away. I got a lot of rather desperate requests -- please note that this CD is available online, at www.cisco.com/univercd. Having a copy on CD is sure handy, though, when you're traveling (or when your DSL line goes down for the n+1th time). You could also get a CD from your local Cisco rep or vendor; it's a good way to introduce yourself, and they might have a practice lab full of toys you can use, if you are polite. -jon- --- Jon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I'm still seeing folks buying documentation CDs on eBay -- some for > more than $10, then add shipping. Re: Token Ring to Ethernet
Yes, we are doing the same thing, although we are using patch cables with IBM connectors on one end and RJ-45 on the other. The only problem is if you are using 2924XL switches. If you are using those, and someone disconnects a patch cable form the wall, the type 1 connector loops back (this prevents open ports in a MAU) and freaks out the 2924XL port. There is an open bug on this, but no solution as of yet. I'm not sure if it affects any other switches. Cisco actually did a study and concluded that Type 1 cable is fine for 100Mb ethernet. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
I want to thank everyone for your insights and suggestions. I guess I did not mean to come across as complaining too much. I really had high hopes for this class and maybe I overprepared for the course because I wanted to get a lot out of it. I had already read the Cisco BSCN course book as well as was 3/4 of the way through Doyle's book before my class started. I know they have to cover a lot of the basics but I just thought one day on RIP was a little much. I will take Priscilla's and Pam's suggestion and write a letter to Global Knowledge and let them know about my experience. Maybe they will let me audit the course at a later date. I still plan on attempting the test in April after some more review. I have a small home lab so I may be able to simulate some of the BGP stuff at home. Anyways, I did not realize that you could find out about the instructor's by calling Global directly. I registered online and they don't give much information there. I will remember this for the future. Also, our instructor never mentioned you could get a refund or reschedule during the first day. But I will bring this up in the letter to Global Knowledge. Thanks everyone and this is a great list with lots of knowledgeable people on it! Sincerely, Heather Buri CSC Technology Services - Houston Phone: (713)-961-8592 Fax:(713)-961-8249 Mobile: Alpha Page: Mailing:1360 Post Oak Blvd Suite 500 Houston, TX 77056 -Original Message- From: Pamela Forsyth [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2001 2:40 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: IOS version 13.xxx ?? and a Rant... Yipe. I just now noticed this thread, and it breaks my heart to hear stories like this. Global Knowledge classes are guaranteed. I'm not sure Heather could get her money back inasmuch as she did sit the entire class, but I am certain they will let her sit the class again with a more experienced instructor. Hey, I'm teaching BSCN in Arlington, VA for Global Knowledge the week of April 23 . . . not scheduled for any Texas trips any time soon. For future reference, Global Knowledge WILL refund your money or reschedule you if you return your materials to the instructor by the end of the first day. Instructors are supposed to emphasize that during the introductory remarks. When you schedule the class, talk to the customer service people and ask them about the instructor. The best questions to ask are, "how long has this person been a Cisco-certified instructor," and "how many times has this person taught this class." The instructor schedules are published about a month in advance of the classes. I hope you won't get a bad impression of all Global Knowledge instructors because of this one. I have had the distinct pleasure of auditing BSCN, CATM and OSPF/BGP classes since joining Global Knowledge, and the instructors in each case were outstanding in every way, but beyond outstanding in terms of technical knowledge. And I'm a tough critic, believe me. For example, how about having CATM taught by someone who participated in the development of the protocols as a member of the ATM Forum working groups? Or BGP taught by someone whose consulting practice focuses on designing networks for national ISPs. And of course, the groupstudy.com founder, Paul Borghese, is a Global Knowledge instructor. ;-) Pamela On Tue, 20 Mar 2001, Priscilla Oppenheimer wrote: > At 05:05 AM 3/20/01, Circusnuts wrote: > >No Way Priscilla... > > > >"wr" is all it takes when hammering across the Hyper Term window ;-) I > >agree- that class sounds like a bummer. MAC addresses - gets off topic
Anyone know if a mac address of 00:00:00:00:00:00 is illegal or reserved. I assume it is and here's the rest of the story... While I should have been studying for CIT I installed a beta of the next version of redhat linux. After I installed it I couldn't get on the net. I could ping other workstations (Win2K boxes) but I could not ping the router. Netmask was correct. after typing ifconfig to check the nic's setup I noticed that the mac was all nulls. Pretty strange, but the win2k boxes didn't seem to care, the 2500 did! All workstations are connected to a 2505 (25xx with integrated 8 port hub). I can understand that the router wouldn't return a ping, but does anyone know why the win2k did?? Is 00:00:00:00:00:00 even a valid address??? Juniper vs. Cisco
Here is an interesting article forwarded to me by a friend who works in the Backbone arena. Read this article online at http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=4009 I am not making any commentary myself as to which is better because I don't work with either of one of these models so I don't know. I just found this interesting.
