Dialer-Watch driving me nuts!! [7:75107]
Hello,Can some help me figure out once and for all what this requirement means: Configure so that ONLY R5 places a call R5 is the remote router and R1 the hub router. This is what I thought I understood regarding the above requirement. Only configure the dialer map statement on the remote side NOT the hub side. I have verified this with Solie's examples on ISDN. This is correct but it just does not work!! Why??A dialer map statement is also needed on the hub side for it to respond to pings from the remote side. The moment I remove the dialer map statement on the hub side, pings start dropping. Can some one help me once and for all? The reason why I ask is: If this same requirement is asked in the Lab, points will be deducted if I use the dialer map statement in the hub side but then my goal would be to get points for working configs and this is the only way to get it to work!! Here goes: using dialer watch as a backup method.Hub side config:R1-TS#interface BRI0/0 ip address 133.10.30.1 255.255.255.0 no ip mroute-cache dialer map ip 133.10.30.5 broadcast 5553000 dialer-group 1 isdn spid1 055511 5551000 isdn spid2 055521 5552000 Remote side config:R5-RTD#ri b0/0 interface BRI0/0 description to R1-Hub rtr ip address 133.10.30.5 255.255.255.0 dialer map ip 133.10.1.0 broadcast 5551000 dialer map ip 133.10.10.0 broadcast 5551000 dialer map ip 133.10.30.1 broadcast 5551000 dialer watch-group 1 dialer-group 1 isdn switch-type basic-ni isdn spid1 055531 5553000 isdn spid2 055541 5554000 access-list 101 deny ospf any any access-list 101 permit ip any any dialer watch-list 1 ip 133.10.1.0 255.255.255.224 dialer watch-list 1 ip 133.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 dialer-list 1 protocol ip list 101 R1 is connected to R4 via Frame and R4 is connected to R5 via EthernetShut the F0/0 intf. on R5, Routes watched disappear, Dialer watch works it magic and now routes are learned via isdn:on R5:O 133.10.10.0/24 [110/1626] via 133.10.30.1, 00:00:04, BRI0/0 C 133.10.5.0/24 is directly connected, Loopback0 O E2133.10.4.0/28 [110/20] via 133.10.30.1, 00:00:04, BRI0/0 O E2133.10.1.0/27 [110/20] via 133.10.30.1, 00:00:04, BRI0/0 C 133.10.30.0/24 is directly connected, BRI0/0 Initial pings work:R5-RTD#ping ip Target IP address: 133.10.1.1 Repeat count [5]: 500 Datagram size [100]: Timeout in seconds [2]: Extended commands [n]: Sweep range of sizes [n]: Type escape sequence to abort. Re: Cisco BGP Exam [7:73516]
Here is what I think is the trick to understand Halabi: It is NOT for entry level people nor is it for people who use it as a study book for any exam. That is why the book is called Internet Routing Architectures not BGP cram session book for the CCXX exams..The word Architectures should mean something, right? I have found out that the book really makes sense after you work with BGP in your job on a day-to-day basis. Atleast, it did for me and now I have read it many times and still refer to it once in a while, when I try to help some customers with their BGP configs and issues. Initially, I found it hard to comprehend so I do feel other's pain :-( Yes, please do not be so harsh about any author. Where in the book does it say that it should be used a study guide for any exam, even the CCIE is NOT mentioned. So how can you be so harsh about it. It is indeed called the Bible for a reason. And same of his OSPF design guide. I have used Caslow, Stewart, Halabi, Doyle and Parkhurst and best of all Cisco's BGP case studies. They are all good books/materials and should be used accordingly. As I always tell people, BGP is NOT for the faint-hearted :-) And, yes, the BGP beta exam was one of the most difficult exams that I took but managed to get a 857. Peace. No flames please !! Just my 2 cents!! CN From: John Neiberger Reply-To: John Neiberger To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Cisco BGP Exam [7:73516] Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 01:59:34 GMT Hmm...that's interesting. I found Halabit to be very easy to understand, but that was after reading Stewart. Stewart's book is incredibly easy to understand, especially considering how short it is. Quite concise, yet readable. I have Doyle Vol. II but I stopped studying for attempt #2 before I got to the BGP section. I should read through it as a refresher and to compare it to Halabi. But Dre? Despise?? :-) That's pretty harsh! However, I guess I can understand your point. BGP can be pretty easy to understand when it's explained correctly, and can be very difficult to understand when explained poorly. Can anyone recommend a good book for the BGP exam I personally despise Halabi's authortative, the BGP-bible IRAbook. It is awful. It is the sole reason nobody understands BGP.It's confusing, boring, and downright awful to read and understandsuch simple concepts. I passed the Cisco BGP exam (took the beta), and I did not evenopen Halabi or Stewart (I do like Stewart, but for this exam, hisinformation is not really on-topic). Normally, I'd say read the RFC's, but they are also not going to help you on this exam. I useda) the outline provided by Ciscob) Jeff Doyle's TCP/IP Routing Volume II (first 318 pages) Jeff Doyle is the master of routing protocols...this misconceptionthat Volume II was not as good as Volume I reminds me of 14year old pimply-faced kids arguing about Star Wars vs. Empire or Matrix 1 vs. Matrix: Reloaded. These are all good movies... however, Star Wars: Episode I and II are more remniscient of HalabiIMO. -dre**Please support GroupStudy by purchasing from the GroupStudy Store:http://shop.groupstudy.com FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html ** This electronic message together with any attachments is confidential. RE: CCDA (DESGN 640-861) ....... A BEAST ???? [7:73770]
Appreciate your feedback Willy.Thank you. Question: What do you mean when you say that you have given this course already a couple of times? Do you mean you are a Cisco trainer, a CCSP sort of? Any pointers that you can provide? NDA withstanding ofcourse!! This is the only certification left for me and the one I need to have my official CCDP cert. mailed to me and thus I have been searching the web for any useful info. pertaining to this exam? What are the type of questions, ex. a long case study for me to read first and then answer questions based on that case study? How many? Arcane questions on SAFE and IPV6?? What's the format like? Any specific topics that I need to dwell on? I am using the Cisco Press CCDA exam certification guide for the old exam as well as the new Sybex book by Lammle and Barkl (not very useful IMHO). Are there anything else like exams/notes that I can buy that would be helpful? Thank you. Sincerely, CN From: Willy Schoots To: 'Cisco Nuts' Subject: RE: CCDA (DESGN 640-861) ... A BEAST [7:73770] Date: Sat, 9 Aug 2003 15:29:55 +0200 One of the reasons is that there is very little material available that covers this new exam. A lot of the stuff is still for the old one. Combined with the fact that the course changed about 85% from the old version you might understand why some people fail the test. Having given this course already a couple of times I can say that its difficulty is in the broad range of subjects that it covers. Anything from routing, switching, IPv6, content networking, voice and so on can appear on the exam. Some of the topics will be very new to typical CCDA candidates (only CCNA level knowledge). It also focuses on the design model used in CISCO SAFE architecture. I feel the course and the exam are a big step forward compared to the old DCN and CID exams. 12.3T Not for 2500 and 2600 ? [7:73249]
Anyone see any anouncement on 12.3 being last relase of IOS for 2500 and 2600 routers. The new T line does not have any images for anything other than the XM series of the 2600 and the 2691. I guess this partly because they repackaged all the images and smallest thing they have is called IPBASE which uses 64M ram and 16m flash. Chuck, Thanks for the useful info. Question for you: Why does Cisco does this? Is it just to screw us, seriously? :- If you have checked out Cisco's web site for the CCDP exam topics, IPX, AT, Windows Networking, X.25, SNA and Stratacom switches are NOT mentioned at all. But someone else who took the same exam on 12/2002 just pointed out that everything else but SNA and Stratacom switches were covered on the exam. I wonder if Cisco just published a new exam topics on their web-site. They do mention HSRP, IRB, Spanning-Tree, Vlans, BPDU's etc. etc which I don't see being covered in the CID book.?? As for the CID itself, I took the 3.0 exam several years ago and the only real gripe I had about it was the stratecom stuff, which was not included in the course materials. It took me two tries to pass, but mainly because I didn't treat the LAN protocols seriously the first time through. If recent experience is worth anything, the published exam topics are probably the best place to start. Re: Frame Relay over IP [7:70927]
I am tryin to use Frame relay switching over IP. Not IP over frame relay. If we can do that we can connect two sites that are connected over IP from L2 point of view. Frame Relay Frame Relay over IP is not yet readily available. The draft IETF specification was produced in March 2001. This has not left much time for industry take-up. Frame Relay over IP would probably appeal only to the carrier market in any case. Carriers may embrace this to reduce their frame relay network costs. It is unlikely to find widespread deployment at all, although it may see limited use towards the end of this year. It should hold little attraction for enterprise companies- where is the benefit of adding another layer of complexity when they can engineer and migrate to an IP VPN instead? RE: BGP Help! [7:70618]
Think of AS's as countries (not the best analogy but...) If you need to get to the UK from Japan thru the US, then the route would be from Japan USUK, right? Now once you land in the US, say in LA, then the US will decide how you will make it to the UK through the US. For ex. US might want you to fly straight to NY and then to London or US might want to first fly to Detroit, then NY and then London or some other way. Thus, AS1 (Japan) knows only of getting to the UK thru the US but cannot dictate how that traffic will get routed thru the US to reach the UK. Come'on Sprint.Let's get on with the Show :-) From: Reply-To: To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: A career in MPLS. [7:66609] Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 04:47:44 GMT Ah - MPLS. Yes there are several large carriers with MPLS deployed or in the process of deploying it (equant, global crossing...). Some on their core and some on their layer 2 networks such as ATM (ATT for example). Others backed away from it but are now looking at it since it's a huge marketing beast that can't be ignored (Sprint for example). Aside from ISP's some large enterprises are using it for things like MPLS enabled VPN's. As to the market for someone that knows MPLS - what I have seen is it's a very specialized and small market right now that is looking for MPLS experience. Mostly due to it still being relatively new in deployments and being relatively small in the number of deployments. I do believe however after saying that - that it never hurts to have a wide background of skills. Imagine if you specialized in Novell and never moved into other areas for example. Novell is a great product but the market for Novell pro's dried up a lot from the good ole days. You would be much less marketable if you didn't also know other things such as Microsoft or Routing or ... I could go into my opinions of the pros and cons of MPLS and where I think it fits - but that's another boring story for later :) www.ccie4u.comOn 1 Apr 2003 at 15:47, nrf wrote:Cisco Nuts wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Hello group, How does one feel about a career in MPLS...I mean doing MPLSas part of your core job day in and out.Is it worth it? Yeah, there are some. Doesanyone know of how MPLS is viewed out there? I mean, in terms ofimplementation, popularity and last but not the least , $$$ ??? ;-Whichof the Big SP's or Enterprise networks have implemented MPLS? Has it been worth the advantages that MPLS proposes??Thank you.Sincerely,CN The way I see it is this. MPLS is potentially powerful technology for it can be used as a lingua-franca among a carrier's network and transport layer and also as a way to impose circuit-switching discipline upon IP and therefore offer circuit-switching services with a pure IP network. But MPLS is by no means a slam-dunk. Certain carriers, most notably Sprint, have elected not to go down the MPLS path because they believe the technology is immature (and they are correct) and also because they believe that they can garner the benefits of MPLS by other means (also correct). The point is that while MPLS offers great potential, it also presents problems, so implementing it is not a no-brainer. And furthermore, I don't particularly like the way that Cisco is pushing MPLS, particularly in its cert program. In my opinion, I think Cisco's cert programs emphasize the least useful parts of MPLS while neglecting the more useful parts. For example, I don't understand why Cisco pushes LDP the way it does, for LDP merely builds LSP's that correspond to the route table, but what's so useful about having LDP's that look like the route table? It is far more useful to build LSP's that differ from the route table, but the methods of doing that are not really covered very much (if at all) in the Cisco curricula. Also, I don't understand why Cisco places such an emphasis on L3VPN's, as if L3VPNs were the only important service that MPLS enables. L3VPN's are only one of the new services that you can enable, and in my opinion, one of the less important ones. Far more important are the L2VPN capabilities and the ability to unify IP, ATM, and optical into a single management plane. The point I'm making is that if you merely study MPLS according to the Cisco curricula, you really haven't learned much about it that's actually useful. Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. What I said is that if you want to advance in that field, you will need substantially more than what Cisco wants you to know about it. Read my post again. You know, we all have our doubts, he's brave enough to come to this group and ask questions. As far as L3VPN's, why not concentrate on that at least to start with. I never said not to learn L3VPN's. Read my post again. What I said is that study of L3VPN's shouldn't be emphasized to the degree that Cisco seems to emphasize it. It's still one reason to do the MPLS thing. By just doing that he'll need to touch on many aspects of MPLS anyway. He will still use either LDP or RSVP, he still will use the LSP establishment, he might as well learn the TE options available for establishment of those LSP's. He'll need to learn how to use the LSP's for pushing traffic over them. He'll learn what and how the labels get pushed/popped. Then why not study it that way. He's not advancing his MPLS skills, he might not have any yet. He's simply trying to see if he will be able to utilize any of the skills he will have to learn to make it worth it his while. No doubt all learning is good. Again, read my post again. I never said that he shouldn't learn it. What I said is that he shouldn't necessarily learn it the Cisco way. Certain carriers, most notably Sprint, have elected not to go down the MPLS path because they believe thetechnology is immature (and they are correct) and also because they believethat they can garner the benefits of MPLS by other means (also correct). The point is that while MPLS offers great potential, it also presentsproblems, so implementing it is not a no-brainer. BGP exam in prep. for the CCIE Lab!! [7:66432]
Hello,The new BGP exam(beta) for the CCIP exam is a great one (imho) in prep. for the actual CCIE Lab.It really tests your skill and deep understanding of your BGP knowledge..133 questions in 250 minutes (slightly less than 2 minutes per question), which I think was not enough.Diagrams after diagrams. The testing site refused to give me just plain white sheets of paper and also refused for me to take my color pens, even my normal pens!!.. Re: CCIE Practice Labs - Redustribution Strategies [7:66306]
Awesome!! ChuckThis should go down as one of the best redistribution attack strategy for the Lab.Are you going to post in on your web-site?? Many like me can learn from this.. From: The Long and Winding Road Reply-To: The Long and Winding Road To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: CCIE Practice Labs - Redustribution Strategies [7:66306] Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2003 04:45:47 GMT For the past couple of weeks I've been whacking out various CCIE practice labs. I've also been suffering various degrees of euphoria and depression, depending upon how badly I was suckered by the redistribution problems. After a particularly long and frustrating day with the Cisco ASET Lab #1, it suddenly occurred to me that there are many ways to do things, and for some reason, I've been overlooking what may be the best way to deal with redistribution. Those of you who have worked these practice labs know how it goes. You read through the lab, then you start configuring. Step 1 - set up OSPF Step 2 - set up RIP Step 3 - redistribute between OSPF and RIP Step 4 - set up EIGRP Step 5 - redistribute between EIGRP and RIP Step 6 - set up IS-IS Step 7 - redistribute between IS-IS and OSPF Step 8 - scream in anguish as you discover that your routing tables have turned to trash and half your network becomes unreachable. ASET #1 was particularly nasty in how it accomplished Step 8 Which brings me to the topic of this post. CCIE's and folks who've been through the Lab without success - what do you think of this approach: 1) do NOT do any redistribution anyplace until all routing protocols have been configured everywhere. Yes, I know that typically you have a section with several steps, one of which is redistribution. But mark your place and return after the IGPs are up and running and all routes for a particular IGP are where they should be. 2) return to the first redistribution task. Before configuring anything, refer to your diagram ( you DO write out a nice diagram, don't you? ) and ask yourself: after I do one way redistribution, what routes will appear where? 2a) Consider how administrative distance might change things 2b) Follow the redistribution to it's extreme. For example, if you redistribute EIGRP into OSPF, what routers will these routes end up on? Will there be any implications to the routing tables? 3) repeat step 2 for every redistribution point, each time considering the totality of the contents of the redistributed routes. So if you have redistributed IS-IS into OSPF, how do those redistributed routes flow through the OSPF domain? 4) Keep an eye out for things like split horizon 5) every step along the way, consider what routers need to see what routes. Watch for situations where necessary routes do not appear. ( you have probably trashed it because of overzealous filtering. ) 5) If problems occur, such as a routing loop, trace back where the problem route came from, and see what can be done to evade the problem. Summary routes work wonders sometimes. So do route-maps and distribute lists. Re-reading this, I see that this topic does not lend itself well to text. I can say with certainty that I now have a very clear vision of redistribution methodology. I've tested it three times now with different labs, and I believe I am solving the redistribution problems more quickly than ever. I hope that I have painted enough of a picture that some of you can fill in the rest. Re: OSPF Tricks of the Trade [7:66308]
Another good one!! Could also add that Ospf timers need to be kept in mind if the hub is using say for ex. a multipoint and the spoke a point-to-point and the task is NOT to configure any #ip ospf network cmd. on the spokes From: The Long and Winding Road Reply-To: The Long and Winding Road To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: OSPF Tricks of the Trade [7:66308] Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2003 05:09:30 GMT After wrestling with Solie this afternoon, it suddenly occurred to me that there is a typical instruction in the various practice labs that can end up driving you nuts if you look at it from one direction, but which is really simple if looked at from another. The topology: several routers over frame relay. Usually four routers. One acts as hub, The others as spokes. the instruction: you must use subinterfaces only on the hub. On the spokes you MUST use the physical interfaces. two of the spoke routes connect to the hub via one subinterface. The other router connects to the hub on the other subinterface. the catch: some bizarre restriction or other about network types, commands that can or cannot be used, the usual BS. It occurs to me that working backwards, you can solve most problems, whatever the restrictions and twists. Frame relay: OSPF default - physical interface non broadcast subinterface - p2ppoint-to-point subinterface - multipoint non broadcast I think the knee jerk reaction is to create a multipoint subinterface for the link to the two spoke routers, and a p2p subinterface for the link to the single spoke router. Then moan in despair as you realize that the instructions forbid the use of any ip ospf network commands anywhere. But if you look from the higher level viewpoint, you see that the physical and the multipoint subinterface default to the same type of OSPF network. Life is easier after that. Is this making sense? I'm at the end of a very long day, with too many subtleties floating around in what's left of my brain. Thus, I am assuming that the ebgp-multihop default value = 255?? Anyone?? Thank you. Sincerely, CN Notice if you configure ebgp-multihop with no parameter, that the show ip bgp neighbors output for that neighbor says: External BGP neighbor may be up to 255 hops away. If you specify a number, such as 2, you'll see: External BGP neighbor may be up to 2 hops away. Not putting a parameter on the command makes life easier, but then again, BGP network operators don't care about easiness. :-) However, if you are going to put a parameter, you need to know the number of hops, which can be a little confusing because just going to a loopback on another router instead of a directly-connected interface counts as a hop. I checked with a sniffer by the way. On the 3-way handshakes, the routers use 255 for the IP TTL regardless, at least on my routers which are running IOS 11.0. That surprised me. But after the 3-way handshake, they start setting the TTL to 1 (if no ebgp-multihop), 255 (if ebgp-multihop is configured with no parameter), and the correct number (if ebgp-multihop is configured with an exact number). That seems like a misbehavior to me (i.e. setting the TTL to 255 for the three-way handshake). You could establish a connection with a router even though you couldn't do anything. You could establish so many that you could cause a DOS. I'll have to do some more testing of this. RE: BGP Multihome 2 isp's [7:66137]
Well, you are right!! Why even use distribute-lists in the first place? Route-maps are more flexible... He can even match as-path 1 and set the filter-list to ^$. This way, in case he has to advertise networks in the future, he does not need to worry about adding it to the acl. And for outbound, prefix-list/distribute-list takes precedence over a filter-list over a route-map. Ebgp multihop in a NBMA medium?? [7:66149]
Hello, If RTA, RTB and RTC are in a FR multipoint config, with RTA in AS100 and RTB and RTC in AS200 with RTB peering with RTA and RTC, does the next-hop-self need to be set on RTB for BOTH RTA and RTC, IF BOTH RTA and RTC are advertising networks?? I definitely understand that if RTC were adverting 10.0.0.0/8, RTB would set itself as the next-hop-self for RTA to get to 10.0.0.0/8. Now if RTA also advertises netw. 20.0.0.0/8, would RTB need to be set as the next-hop-self for RTC to get to 20.0.0.0/8? Which basically means that RTB needs to be set as the next-hop-self for both RTA and RTC?? Now to add to this, if you are running an IGP for the networks that connect these 3 routers, if the next-hop-self even necessary? Please advise. Thank you. Sincerely, CN P.S. AFAIK, ebgp was designed for directly connected only and using ebgp multhop is not recomended for ISP envy. would you please tell me the caveat of using ebgp multihop for ISP envy. While I don't know about the ISP environment, I've done several BGP labs with other folks in different parts of the country. EBGP Multihop is a necessary part of this, obviously. I suppose in real world the advantage is that you can peer loopbacks, rather than just the physical interfaces. Another thing that comes to mind, applicable to ISP and corporate environments, is that your iBGP routers can be located in different parts of your network, eliminating the need for physical adjaceny. Using communites to change the local-pref - not working?? [7:65993]
Hello, I have 2 routers in AS300 RTF is connected to RTA in AS 1239 RTG is connected to RTH in AS 701 In AS300 I have set communities via a route-map to be advertised as follows: 1239:110 to AS 1239 701:120 to AS 701 Routers in AS 1239 and AS 701 have been configured with a community list and a route-map to match these communities and change the local pref to 110 and 120 respectively. These work fine: Ex.AS701-H#bt Network Next HopMetric LocPrf Weight Path * 3.3.3.0/24 190.90.10.1 120 0 300 i Ex. AS1239-A#bt Network Next HopMetric LocPrf Weight Path * 3.3.3.0/24 180.80.10.1 0110 0 300 i AS1239 and AS701 are connected to RTE AS7018-NAP From AS7018, I wanted to route to be preferred through AS701 which has a higher local pref of 120 BUT AS7018 still prefers the route thru AS1239 which has a local pref. And I do not see the local pref values in AS7018. Why?? Ex. AS7018-NAP#bt Network Next HopMetric LocPrf Weight Path * 3.3.3.0/24 170.70.10.20 701 300 i * 160.60.10.20 1239 300 i 160.60.10.2 is AS1239 Now I do understand that all things being equal, BGP will prefer the router with the lowest RID, which in this case is AS1239, 160.60.100.100. Thus AS7018 chooses this route. BUT I want AS7018 to choose AS701 to get to AS300's networks!!! Question: Should AS7018 on receiving the communites from AS1239 and AS701 set the desired local pref?? I always thought that you had to specify the md5 authentication in the virtual-link cmd. but it appears not so. Here is what did catch my eye: When specifying the md5 key, the VL does use key 1 Ex. Message digest authentication enabled Youngest key id is 1 but when NOT specifying it, it uses the default-key 0 and this still works even though area 0 is using key 1 !!! Ex. Message digest authentication enabled No key configured, using default key id 0 But MOST IMPORTANT: will any points be deducted by the proctor god in the Lab if one does not specify the md5 keyword in the VL cmd?? From: The Long and Winding Road Reply-To: The Long and Winding Road To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: OSPF Virtual link authentication - observations [7:65628] Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 05:04:47 GMT Not sure I have this all sorted out correctly. Perhaps those with a bit more experience might add their wisdom, not to mention their corrections. The ospf virtual link being what it is, it follows rules similar to any other interface. It does appear, though, that in terms of structure, it looks something like this: ( commands under the ospf process ) area X authentication area X virtual-link y.y.y.y authentication area X virtual-link y.y.y.y authentication-key WORD where X is the non zero area number over which the virtual link transits. In other words, for purposes of structure, the virtual link is not really part of area 0. It is a point-to-point link that is part of the non zero transit area. Am I understanding this correctly? I have a setup working, where the area 0 authentication is simple and the transit area authentication is MD5, and no adjacency is formed across the virtual link with simple authentication, but comes up just fine with MD5. Re: Workbook homelab ? [7:65161]
In that case, I would recommend CCOnlinelabs.com.You have over 12 routers to play with and 2 switches along with isdn and atmYou can configure these routers to simulate any of those major labs or your own...Best of all, is the price, $30.00 for 5.5 hours which is imho, what your target should be to complete one full lab!! (so that in the actual exam, you have over 2 hours to review all your silly mistakes :- And to add that Tony is of great help if you run into any problems. He himself is a CCIE. Good Luck. From: Jason Viera Reply-To: Jason Viera To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Workbook homelab ? [7:65161] Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2003 20:05:46 GMT Also Keep in mind that many of the companies selling the major labs have only a few tasks to be configured on some of the perimeter routers(in my experience), they really just want you to rent rack time from them at outrageous prices. The labs can be modified to give you the same learning experience although it requires a great deal of time and effort! IMHO Jason richard dumoulin wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I was wondering whether the people who passed the lab and used the well known prep lab workbooks did adapt their own home lab to do the exercises or bought all the necessary routers/switches to set up the 13 router lab or just purchased remote rack. I myself possess 6 routers but they are only sufficient to do the Solie's labs, not more. Thanks misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Default-information originate in ISIS?? [7:65443]
Hello, I have 2 L-1 routers connected to a L1-L2 router via frame-relay. Referring to Doyle's Vol. I, there are 2 ways to generate a default route in the L-1 routers pointing to the L1-L2 router: 1. #default-information originate - on the L1-L2 router #ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 null0 - works!! 2. configure #clns routing and #clns router isis on the intf. This will generate a default route in the L-1 routers - also works! Question: I removed the command #clns routing and #clns router isis from the L-1 routers and #clns router isis on the L1-L2 router and bounced the interfaces. I also did a #clear ip route * I still see the default route in the L-1 router?? Is this the default in Ios 12.2.1 Enterprise? Or something else? Thank you for your help. When to use PIM nbma-mode?? [7:65187]
Hello, When is the cmd. ip pim nbma-mode actually used in a frame-relay hub and spoke topology? In my testing , I have found out that if the RP happens to be in one of the spokes say spoke A, then it is needed for the other spoke, spoke B to get to a multicast group configured on spoke A? Is this correct? If the RP happens to be on the Hub router then everything works fine without using nbma-mode, correct? Thank you for your help. Sincerely, CN _ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Ospf to Rip Redistribution - Setting TAGS?? [7:63734]
Hello, I am trying to understand route redistribution from ospf to rip using tags. This example is taken from CCO: With the following configuration, OSPF external routes with tags 1, 2, 3, and 5 are redistributed into RIP with metrics of 1, 1, 5, and 5, respectively. The OSPF routes with a tag of 4 are not redistributed. router rip redistribute ospf 109 route-map 1 ! route-map 1 permit match tag 1 2 set metric 1 ! route-map 1 permit match tag 3 set metric 5 ! route-map 1 deny match tag 4 ! route map 1 permit match tag 5 set metric 5 I see that the tag values are arbitrary. Question is: How does RIP match tags 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5? Is there a cmd. missing in this example? I am thinking in term of access-lists where you match ip address 1 and that ip address reference acl 1. In this example, what references tags 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 so that the metric gets set to a value?? And more specifically, how does routes that match tag 4 get denied? RE: Isdn error with PPP - Well...NEVER again !!!! [7:63301]
Alright!! After many many months of frustration with what I thought was a problem with ppp encap, it turned out to be something else. As Stuart correctly pointed me to this url (which I have no idea why I did not look it up earlier) the problem lies with using LDN along with the SPID #'s. Thank you Stuart for this one. I tested it first using just plain HDLC, then with plain PPP, then added ppp auth chap, then ppp chap hostanme and then with finally what I presumed to be the culprit, ppp multilink. But lo behold!! all of these worked with NO problem when the LDN # is not specified along with the SPID #. Re: OT: New Instructor Experiences [7:62826]
John, First...CONGRATS You can do it!! Yes, there area moments when you feel that way...especially the first couple of timesbut in the end you will come out a champ!! When I started teaching the CCNA/NP a couple of years back, I too felt the same initially, but personally, teaching has been the best thing for me in my life!! I love teaching and am passionate about it. I am just dying to pass the CCIE Lab so I can begin my own tutoring in my basement for the CCNA/NP/IP courses. The trick is to really prepare for it the night before and then dive straight to the hands-on section in the class. Then start explaining the concepts about the material as you do the hands-on. Students love the hands-on!! Preparing your own notes help as students respect you more than just saying Ok guys, let's turn to page 31 and talk about Ospf. Ospf is. Good Luck. From: John Neiberger Reply-To: John Neiberger To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: OT: New Instructor Experiences [7:62826] Date: Tue, 11 Feb 2003 22:12:07 GMT I just feel the need to rant/vent for a bit and I knew there were a bunch of you who might be able to relate to this. I've started teaching a short, one-session general networking class for some of the people here at the bank. The first session, which was really just a runthrough with a handful of students, went fairly well. In fact, it went so well that they increased the number of overall attendees to about 60 or so. Last week I had another session that went exceptionally well, except for a couple of students who really didn't want to be there. I couldn't have asked for it to go better, and my boss heard lots of good things about it. One person even said I should be a professor! :-) Now, that brings us to today Today I had an afternoon class, and in my opinion it sucked rotten eggs. I feel embarrassed to have been involved with it.I can't think of too many ways in which it could have gone worse. I rambled, I flew through 2.5 hours of material in about an hour, I lost my place a lot. I'm not certain that I ever formed a train of thought longer than a couple of cars, and I think even those trains were without engine and caboose. Have any of you other instructors had days like that? As I even mentioned in class, I felt like my 'explainer' was broken today, and it certainly was. I'm hoping that I could get some sympathy from other instructors with similar experiences. Okay, I'm going to go drown my disappointment in some coffee! Re: CCIE Lab - I have seen he future and it is.... [7:62776]
Hello Charles, With due respect I ask, why did you abandon your quest for the CCIE? I am curious as to how many times you actually hit the Lab? Sincerely, CN From: Charles Riley Reply-To: Charles Riley To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: CCIE Lab - I have seen he future and it is [7:62776] Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 22:19:54 GMT Chuck, Your post reminds me of those weird little ice cream stands that I sometimes see at the mall and various carnivals. It's called something like Dipping Dots - The Ice Cream of the Future. The initial human instinct is much like the Cro-Magnon humanoids encountering the monolith at the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey (sp): jump up and down with excitement until you realize it's just freeze dried ice cream. Rounding out that analogy, the CCIE of the future will probably be reduced to being the CCNP of today. Regardless, I have spent too much time and money to abandon the quest for CCIE now, but frankly, if I hadn't invested as much as I have, I would most likely abandon the quest in favor of broadening into other areas. I really don't see much market value for the CCIE anymore, especially with Cisco hellbent on making it a meatgrinding cash cow. Your java console and one way only to configure experience kind of bears this out. Sorry for the depressing post, just wanted to share. Charles The Long and Winding Road wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Been spending this weekend on what was once the Cisco Advanced SE Training ( ASET ) set of labs. These are available for those whose Cisco account team approves - there are a few conditions which can be found in the wee places of certification training. The program is run by Lab Gear ( the only link I have is www.labgear.net, but this is a login page ) There are a number of labs of CCIE level, look, and feel. Supposed to be real equipment, but the access is via java script windows, not terminal emulation. This makes for some interesting situations. The windows show or provide output only when they are active. So if you had two router sessions open, and you made changes on one router that would generate systems messages of one sort or another you would not see those messages on the other. also, I have yet to find a way to generate output from debugging commands. Things like term mon and logging of one kind or another have not been successful. so no debug ip routing and debug ip ospf adj. As with the real lab, there are a series of tasks to be completed. Grading is done via a script. This is the point of most interest. Actually, I suspect a lot of the current CCIE Lab grading is done using scripting tools. I believe the proctors still physically examine equipment configurations for some things, but I could be wrong. It is of interest because to judge from the script outputs I am seeing, there appears to be an assumption that there is one and only one way to do things. I'm not sure this is always true. I am not sure that this results in an entirely accurate grade. But more importantly, given my experience with the java consoles and the manner in which these labs must be done, I am not sure I like where this is headed. Something Brian Dennis and Brad Ellis and some other people started talking about back when the CCIE Lab went from two days to one - something about the longer term goal being to do the test remotely, and having people show up at Sylvan or some other testing center and log in remotely. If the Lab Gear approach is any indication, this is not ready for real live testing. I experienced far too many problems with terminal ( javascript ) sessions disconnecting mysteriously. With 8 open windows, it sometimes got to be very hard to find the session ( router ) I was looking for. Cut and paste is a real pain. You have to open a scratchpad window, which is associated with the javascript console window. cutting and pasting is done to this wind. there are scratchpad windows associated with each java wind, so if you had a scratchpad open for every router session, that makes for a LOT of junk to fight your way through looking for what you want. then there is the problem of actually moving what you want to copy and paste. highlight and control c control v or alt e paste don't work. you have to click on buttons on the java consoles to copy to and from routers. beyond that, there is the problems of whether or not the script answer is the right answer. For example, in one lab, a particular instruction requires that the rip routers on a particular segment have to use the neighbor statement to see eachother ( and prevent other routers on that segment from joining into the RIP domain ) well, the problem is, one of those routers is connected to another RIP router via a different interface. need a neighbor statement there too, but the script does not cover this, nor does th
