AUX Port

2001-01-02 Thread Austin

I have a Cisco 2511 Access Server.
I want to connect to the 2511 via Modem. I have an old Motorola 14.4 modem.
The aux port has the ffg config:

line aux 0
login
password cisco
modem inout
transport input all

I have the phone line plugged into the Modem (where it says TO WALL) and I
have the Parallel connector (Modem) from Cisco's console kit plugged into
the Modem Parallel Port. Then I have a regular Cisco console cable running
from the modem to the aux port.

When I call the number it just rings and rings. The modem does not answer.
What am I doing wrong or what am I not doing?
All help appreciated.

Hey,

Throw in the following and see what happens:

speed 19200
modem type autoconfigure

this should set the AA on the modem.

Re: AUX Port

2001-01-02 Thread Ivan C. Permana (Telkomsel)

Hi All,

I suggest first you should make sure that the modem is having S0 register as 1. If the
modem have a front panel you can check it by see the setting ANSWER=RING #1 (well, it
is
in the Motorola Codex 3266). If not, try to connect the modem to a PC and do
hyperterminal to COM1 and then type :

ats0=1
at&w
at&y

And then while in hyperterminal and connect to the modem, dial the modem from another
computer, you should see RING on hyperterminal and then connect.

Second you must make sure the modem is well connected to router. You can do this by
telnet to router port 2001 and then do

at
at&v

If there is a response then psysical connection is OK.

Third do 'sh users' on router. If you see any aux line appear, then it mean the router
is busy trying to find out the modem type and you must clear the line. or you can put
'modem autoconfigure discovery' command.

Hope will help

console or AUX port

the octal cables into the AUX ports of the routers and everything works
fine. Unfortueately the 1600's don't have an AUX port so I tried the

what others have told me this can be done. When I went to fatkid.com and

Aux port [7:53080]

2002-09-11 Thread Casey, Paul (6822)

Is there a way to get a aux port to keep trying to dial out every few

Basically something like a command that would keep alive that would keep
bringing it up, and forcing the modem to try and dial out.

I don't want to have to dialin to it and force it to call me back.

Any help appreciated.

AUX port connects to Console???

2001-01-30 Thread KPNY

Dear all,

I have a funny question that would like to see if it is possible, and most
importantly, how to do it..

I have four 25xx routers... but I don't have a terminal server I want to
access the console of all routers remotely, so I am thinking if I can
connect the console port of a router, to the AUX port of other router...
like below:

||
| Router 1 Con Aux |
||---|
 ||
  |
|-|--|
| Router 2 Con Aux |
||---|
 ||
  |
|-|--|
| Router 3 Con Aux |
||---|
 ||
  |
|-|--|
| Router 4 Con Aux |
||
   |
   |e0

such that, I telnet the real IP of router4, then telnet to port 2001 (aux
port) of router4 and get into router3 console, and so on If this
possible??

Conections Via the Aux port

2000-10-06 Thread Andrew Twigger

Dear Group

A little of topic but I wondering if any of you can answer this for me.

I have two routers in a home lab (2501 & 2503) and was wondering is it
possible to run a cable between the two routers via the Aux port and connect
from one to the other.

Reason for asking is I only have one Config cable and have to kept
unplugging and repluging it in-between the two routers.

Thanks in advance.

AUX port and Modem Problem

2000-11-01 Thread Suzi Beavis

I am trying to set up a modem to dial into the AUX port of a Cisco2610
router for remote support. I am using HyperTerminal on the PC and I have
set up a reverse telnet session into the modem (3 Com U.S Robotics – 56K fax
modem) connected to the AUX port. The modems seem to connect correctly but
I am unable to see EXEC mode on the router. While connected I can send
text from the HyperTerminal to the reverse telnet session into the router –
BUT I can not see EXEC mode on the router. I have tried different routers
and about 3 different modems (along with numerous AT strings) – but no
success. After the two modems have connected, I get the following message
on HyperTerminal

CONNECT 28800/V42BIS

That’s about it! Any text I type into the HyperTerminal can be see on the
reverse telnet session and vice versa.

The router config is below:

hostname Router
!
ip subnet-zero
ip host aux 2065 1.1.1.1
!
interface Loopback0
ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255
!
interface Ethernet0/0
no ip address
shutdown
!
interface Serial0/0
no ip address
shutdown
!
!
line con 0
transport input none
line aux 0
password cisco
login
modem Dialin
modem autoconfigure type usr_sportster
transport input all
stopbits 1
speed 115200
flowcontrol hardware
line vty 0 4
login
!
no scheduler allocate
end

Has any one else out there experienced the same problem - I am missing
something?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Suzi

Re: console or AUX port

2000-11-08 Thread Rodgers Moore

You know those blue ribbon console cables you get with a new router? Look
at its pin out, it's a rolled cable. This is exactly what you need to do to
the cables you have to make them work in the console port. I'd just use an
8 pin modular splice and a blue console cable added onto the end of the
cable you already have.

Re: telnet via AUX port

2000-08-23 Thread Rodgers Moore

This is one of those fun ones. Each router listens for the break sequence
and forwards the second, then resets to listening again.

So when you type the break sequence: Ctrl-Shift-6

1st gets stopped at R1 (R1 looks for 'x')
2nd passed by R1 & gets stopped at R2 (R2 looks for 'x')
3rd gets stopped at R1 (R1 looks for 'x')
4th passed by R1 & R2, gets stopped at R3 (R3 looks for 'x')
5th gets stopped at R1 (R1 looks for 'x')
6th passed by R1 & gets stopped at R2 (R2 looks for 'x')
7th gets stopped at R1 (R1 looks for 'x')
8th passed by R1 & R2 & R3, gets stopped at R4 (R4 looks for 'x')
etc. etc. etc.

To break from the 2514 (R3) to the 2503 (R2) you would type: Ctrl-Shift-6,
Ctrl-Shift-6, x

RE: Aux port [7:53080]

2002-09-11 Thread s vermill

I assume you're using dialer strings, etc. Can't help you there off hand.
However, I've used a feature called 'dtr dialer' in the past. This is where
the dialer interface asserts dtr when it tries to activate. If the modem
can be configured to dial a number from a bin when it receives dtr (and many
can believe it or not), you can then set a 'pulse-time' on the interface.
The pulse-time is how long the interface lowers and then re-asserts dtr when
the protocol goes down (be careful here to set your keepalive far enough
apart that the entire dial process is allowed to take place before the
interface toggles or you'll never get a connection!). A one or two second
pulse is usually sufficient for the modem to release and redial.

Can't say for sure I've ever done this on an aux port. Async serial ports
definitely.

Now that I've wrote all this out, it dawns on me to ask whether or not you
have any keepalive enabled at all. You might solve the whole problem by
adding those into your config. Seems the router would reset the interface
once three consecutive keepalives were missed and resend the dialer string.

Sorry, I've been out of town nearly all summer and I don't currently have a
lab to verify any of this. Just some thoughts...

Using your example, you will need to connect the AUX port on R1 to the =
CON port on R2, etc, etc. =20

Standard Cisco Roll-Over cable is needed.

Config on the R1 should work with:
 line aux 0
 access-class 1 in
 no exec
 exec-timeout 0 0
 transport input all
 stopbits 1
 flowcontrol hardware

You will probably also need to:
 clear line aux 0
on the control router (or do a restart) before the config will work.

You will then be able to telnet to R1 on TCP 2001 to gain console access =
to R2.

I do this on a 2509 so my AUX port is actually TCP 2009 as 2001-2008 are =
used by Async Ports. Likewise on a 2511, AUX would be TCP 2017 as =
2001-2016 are used by Async Ports.

Good Luck.

Terminal server, it doesn't sound like such a good thing, huh.
It is a router with async lines. You take the lines and plug them into all
of your other routers in the rack throw a few commands on the lines maybe
make a little host file and you can plug the console into the terminal
server and reverse telnet into the other routers instead of moving your
console cable from router to router.

Re: AUX port connects to Console???

I'm trying to get a clearer picture on the subject
Don't have a 2509 or 2511 and never saw one.
But on 3600 you can add NM-16A which is 16 port Async module or
you can add NM-16AM which is 16 port Analog modem module.
I know 3600 + NM-16AM is called an access server
Will 3600 + NM-16A be called terminal server? or access server ?
Is Terminal Server same as Access Server as stated by Brian (Landa) and Daniel?
Thanks
Ruben

Re: AUX port connects to Console???

Terminal Servers weren't born just to be terminal servers, they have other
uses. You could plug those async lines into modems instead of into other
router's console ports.

Amazing how much difference there is between a terminal server and a

Sure,

Router(config)# line aux 0
Router(config-line)# transport input telnet

Then telnet to any IP interface using port 2001.

What are you trying to achieve:

A) remote dial-in for Exec session only to this router (no ppp)

B) remote dial-in for PPP session which will allow Telnet, ping onto and

Once I know a) or b) I can advise why your config is wrong.

Re: AUX port and Modem Problem

2000-11-02 Thread Suzi Beavis

I am trying to achieve option A.

A) remote dial-in for Exec session only to this router (no ppp)

I have tried to lower the speed on the modem/router to 9600 hoping this may
help, and I have tried several different modems and played around with AT
strings galore. I give up!!

This would at first appear to be a simple problem - but it is surprising
just how many people have emailed me regarding this exact problem!

That is:
No EXEC prompt. You can send text between hyperterminal (local PC) and
reverse telnet session (remote router).(I have tried using Tera Term Pro
as suggested in earlier group study emails.)

Good luck to those people with this problem - if you manage to work it out
please let me/us know.

Cheers,
Suzi.

What are you trying to achieve:

A) remote dial-in for Exec session only to this router (no ppp)

or

B) remote dial-in for PPP session which will allow Telnet, ping onto and
via the router in question ?

Once I know a) or b) I can advise why your config is wrong.

RE: AUX port and Modem Problem

2000-11-02 Thread Terry Gorman

Hi Guys,

Suzi have you tried "echo on" and "echo off". These commands show the
entries that you make to the modem.

I'm lucky in that I have a US Robotics and at the bottom of it I have access
to some timy swithces. I can set echo on and off and it replicates the
problem exactly as you describe.

If you need to do it via reverse telnet on the modem simply enter, even
though you cannot see it, ate1 for echo on and ate0 for echo off. Once
again, this replicates the problem exactly as you describe it.

In the words of Learnkey's Teddy Bosey CCIE (in a US Accent) "Problem
Solved".

Re: [configure router thru aux port]

2000-11-14 Thread azhar mumtaz

The auxiliary port is used for remote access to the router through an
asynchronous modem.
You have to assign an ip address to the asynchronous interface mapped to the
auxiliary port on a router.
The auxiliary password is used to set a password for the aux. port . This port
is used to connect a modem to a router for remote console connections.
The commands are
router# config t
router(config)#line aux 0
router(config-line)#login
router(config-line)#password azhar
router(config-line)^z

It is important to connect the modem to the router before configuring the
modem to verify that communication between them is established. If the cabling
is incorrect, the rest of the process will fail.

For a complete router-modem connection, consult the following URL

Cisco 2621 Aux port [7:1304]

2001-04-19 Thread Bernardo Estevez

Hi all,

I'm trying to configure the AUX port on a Cisco
terminal server 2621. I'm using an external US
Robotics 56K modem connected with a rolled cable and a
modem adapter on the modem side. This connection seems
to work but where I'm having problem is in the
configuration of the "line aux 0" interface.
This is what I have done so far:

line aux 0
 autobaud
 modem answer-timeout 20
 modem autoconfigure discovery
 stopbits 1

When I dial-in using Windows2k HyperTerminal, the
modem answers and I get connected, but then I don't
see anything on the window. I've tried playing around
with the 'login' and 'password' option but no luck. Do
I have to manually tell it the transmit and receive
speeds? What else am I missing?

Any input would be greately appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Please also copy your reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
as I don't get the chance to go through this list too
often.

I have a 2511 with a modem attached to the AUX port and I use a chat script

get the modem to dial. I have no trouble getting connected but I have to send
traffic over the interface to get it to come up. So if the interface gets
disconnected how can I get it come back up with issuing a ping or manually
sending traffic over the line.

so far, we have the following in the router:

HOwever, when anyone calls the dial to number, the modem answers,
but nothing appears on the screen except a blinking cursor. The

I believe the attached modem is a USR 56k v.34 capable.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try the modem autoconfigure discovery command.

change the speed to a lower speed and set you term software to the same.

If you plug a 33k modem in you get thru right away.

Make sure you have the dip switch on the modem set to DTR over-ride. On USR
modems, this is usually dip switch #1 and usually down is "on", so put #1
down. Disclaimer: this works for me using a USR, but I'm plugged into con0.

RE: aux port issue [7:33466]

Just for clarity on those dip switches...I set them like this:
1 down
2 up
3 down
4 up
5 up
6 down
7 down
8 down
and I'm almost always successfull dialing IN to a 3640 plugged into con0.
FYI, the dip switches on USR modems are almost always:
Dip Switch Description
1 DTR Override
2 Verbal/Numeric Result Codes
3 Result Code Display
4 Command Mode Local Echo Suppression
5 Auto Answer Suppression
6 CD Override
7 Power-on and ATZ Reset Software Defaults
8 AT Command Set Recognition
...and ON = Down, OFF = Up.

also FYI:
To connect a USR modem to a cisco 3640 access server, use a MODEM CAB-5MODCM
(29-0881-01) adapter and a rollover cable plugged into con0 on the cisco.

BTW, I know con0 is a security problem, but my company requires it.

AUX port suitable replacement for ISDN Sim?

2001-02-02 Thread Albert Lu

Hi all,

I've been doing some research on ISDN sims. Reading past Groupstudy posts, I
stumbled on a couple that suggested to use the AUX port for DDR, instead of
using the BRI port for ISDN DDR.

Is that enough for the CCIE, since the ISDN sim is a very expensive piece of
equipment? Could I get away without it? (assuming I don't have real ISDN in
the first place)

Thanks

Re: Cisco 2621 Aux port [7:1304]

2001-04-19 Thread Thomas

Try this configuration:

line aux 0
 login local
 modem InOut
 modem autoconfigure type usr_courier
 transport input all
 escape-character BREAK
 autoselect ppp
 stopbits 1
 speed 115200
 flowcontrol hardware

I tried the "modem autoconfiguration discoverty" with the U.S. Robotics, but
it didn't work. Also, the "modem" adapter shipped with the 2600 router is
not the correct one. I don't have the part number here. Please go to Cisco
web site and check for part number of this adapter.

Re: Cisco 2621 Aux port [7:1304]

2001-04-20 Thread David Chandler

How did you get this to work on the AUX port?

I agree with everything bellow except with the
"speed 115200".

Acording to my documentation "Cisco IOS Dial
Solutions" the max speed on the AUX port is
38400.

I have set this up on 2500s, 4500s & 7500s.
Every time that I have tried to force the speed
greater than 38400, the line speed will cycle
through all the speeds 9600, 14400 etc and
not sync with the modem.

Is the AUX differnet for 2600's ?

If you repeatedly do a "sh line" what speed does
the AUX show up at? And, is it changing?

PS: I have been checking CCO for the specifics
on the 2600 AUX to confirm but no luck @tt

Also, the 'modem autoconfigure type usr_courier' line will override whatever
you set it to as soon as it starts talking to the modem, so don't even
bother (no need to even set it, it'll figure it out).

Just a quick question... Is it possible to configure the AUX port on a 2501

RES: AUX Port capacity in Cisco Router?

2000-07-25 Thread Henrique Issamu Terada

Hi everybody

Paul

Aux 0 speed is up to 38.4Kbps, but it DOES support PPP.
It does not support PPP framing in microcode.
You can see more details in CMTD course, page 4-13.

I have no experience of implementing this but I believe that the max speed
of the Aux port is 38400 bps and cannot support PPP.

Modem not connected to con/aux port ?

2000-08-03 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I wonder if any of you know if there is a way to find out by looking at the
configuration of a router if there is a modem connected to the aux or
console port ? I have a router which should have a modem attached to it, but
when I try to dial in, I get a NO CARRIER response. I suspect that the cable
from the modem is not attached to the router, but I cannot ask anybody at
the site if that is really the case. Now I wonder if there is a way (maybe a
DEBUG command) to find out if there is physically anything connected to the
aux or console port ? I can TELNET to the router and access the
configuration.
Thanks for your help in advance !

Regards,

Georg

Ya. If you take a look in the Cisco documentation on the web, you'll find on
any one of the hardware manuals of the 2500 series, a layout for the RJ-45
port. From there, all you have to do if you can't get the adapter from Cisco
is splice an Ethernet cable and a serial cable together with the right pin
outs. Being able to do this is relatively handy, I've found.

It is too funny that you posted that. Im working on that scenerio right
now. See below for what I have so far. I cant seem to get my workstation
to obtain the correct subnet mask. It will connect to my term server's aux
port, and it can ping through to UUNET's DNS server, but the darn thing
won't surf in IE. Pissing me off.

Re: dial up to 2501 AUX port

2000-07-04 Thread Brad Ellis

Olden,

hi! Yes, they are setup properly. It'll give my PC an IP address, DNS
server info, etc. The only thing it doesnt seem to get right is the subnet
mask. Very strange. I setup dial-up networking on another laptop and it
does the same thing. However, this one seems to work with IE5 (I can surf
the net). I dont get the whole subnet mask thing. Ive tried just about
everything in the book and I still get the classfull subnet mask every time.
(I tried different routers, different versions of IOS, etc, same thing every
time). Ive tried the async-bootp sub command etc. nada

Re: AUX port and modems [7:62755]

2003-02-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
J,

Thanks for responding. What I am trying to do is simulate a dial-up
connection to a router without an external telephone line.

The first option looks to me good but I will not be able to program the AUX
port. Or am I wrong?

About the second option, can I connect the 2 modems back to back and still
be able to program the router to accept dial-up?

host---modem---modem--AUX (router)

MO

Well, I can think of a couple of ways.

The first and most obvious to me is to not use the modem at all, and just
connect the Host to the AUX port.

The second method involves using a Phone system (Key System, PBX, FXS
ports) to connect the 2 modems (You'll need 2 modems.
Host->Modem---Modem->AUX Port). If I understood wha you were trying to
accomplish I could assist you better.

The AUX port can be set to act as a CONS port. You would be able to modify
any aspect of the router config from the AUX, including the AUX itself. But
it won't really *simulate* a dialup.

Two standard analog modems won't talk back to back. You need a telephone
line simulator to do that (or a telephone line!). I bought one about a year
ago for around $500. Got it from Black Box.

Re: AUX port and modems [7:62877]

2003-02-15 Thread Jose Canillas
Sure you can use a pair of modems, some where I heard it was done even with
internal dial-up modems, I'm sure it can be done with any pair of analog
leased-line modems. That would be useful only if the router you want to
access to, is more than the length of a console cable away, otherway I don't
see why not connect directly the serial of your host to the AUX of the
router using the console cable and the appropriate adapter.

Re: AUX Port dial in [7:69994]

2003-06-08 Thread jayhawks-2003
Here is how you could configure an aux port on a Cisco via an external
modem.
This is how my 2509 is configured for dial access. I use an Actiontec
external modem

interface Async9
 no ip address
 encapsulation ppp
 async mode interactive
 no cdp enable

line aux 0
 session-timeout 60
 exec-timeout 15 0
 login local
 modem Dialin
 transport input all
 autoselect ppp
 autohangup
 stopbits 1
 flowcontrol hardware

To dial into my router, I use minicom on my Linux machine. You could also
use
Hyperterminal, Secure CRT on etc... on a Windows machine as well. If you do
not want to connect the modems together via the PSTN, you must use a null
modem cable. Hope this gets you started.

Re: AUX Port dial in [7:69994]

One thing I learned a few years ago, the hard way:

Each and every BYTE that appears (inbound or outbound) on an AUX port causes
a processor interrupt. This is NOT GOOD.

Put your modem on the CONSOLE port, that is what it is there for.

Jason.

RE: access to AUX port [7:20364]

I don't think you need any special config on the aux port. Hook an external
modem to it with the cisco rollover cable, just like a console port, and you
should be in business. Use something like Hyperterminal to access it, set
Hyperterminal to 9600/8/none/1.

Aux port - Dialer setup question [7:21088]

2001-09-25 Thread Robert Fowler

While studying for my BCRAN test, I decided to test some of what I learned
however I think I may have hit a bump. I think the problem is you can't put
an aux port into a dialer pool because it doesn't have a physical interface.
However for the purpose of this exercise I let you in on what I have
attempted.

I have 2 routers, I have a modem connected to each aux port. The 2 routers
have a link between them, if that link goes down I want 1 router to call the
2nd and establish a connection using the aux ports.

Do I have to have an asynch port in order to accomplish this?

Thank You,
Robert Fowler

The link isn't broken, it rolled to the next line. Notice the "tm" on the
next line. In your browser at the end of the address just add the tm so it
shows the whole address on 1 line.

As far as Cisco Press books go, the BCRAS (Building Cisco Remote Access
Networks) book will cover it.

What type of modem would be best? What are the average prices? I don't
need anything great, I'll just be using in my lab to dial up to an ISP to

Re: AUX port for dial out??? [7:2077]

2001-04-26 Thread John Neiberger

Just about any external modem you find will do the job. Keep in mind
that the AUX port speed on a 2501 is limited to 38400 bps so a 56k modem
is unnecessary; a 33.6 modem will do just fine. We've used US Robotics
Courier modems and 3Com V.everything modems. We haven't really had any
problems with either model.

Good luck,
John

Using AUX port for remote admin [7:9260]

Tomarrow a co-worker of mine is flying out to a remote
site and is going to try and hook a modem up to our

let me know if they see any problems with it, I would

I am connecting to the aux port of my router through a dialup modem.
When the aux port is connected to a Hayes modem, everything works fine.
When I use a USrobotics Sportster modem the line keeps on ringing with no
answer.
Does anyone know why this could happen and what command shoudl I send to the
modem to make it behave?

Subject: Modem not connected to con/aux port ?

Regards,

Georg

Re: Modem not connected to con/aux port ?

2000-08-03 Thread Dale Holmes

When and where do you get the "no carrier" message. That is typically
something you see in a terminal program when there is no phone connection to
the modem at YOUR end. In other words, you start the program, enter the
phone number to dial and initiate a connection - then within a second or two
you get the "no carrier" message. It means that your modem could not dial
out because it did not detect a carrier signal (dial tone). Can you dial out
to anyplace else?

If the modem at the remote end was up and simply was not connected to the
router, it seems to me that it would:

1. Ring
2. Answer
3. Negotiate
4. Leave you with no responses to your input

I'm not sure that "no carrier" is the message that you would see if the
remote modem did not have a connection to the remote router.

But then again - I COULD BE COMPLETELY WRONG!!!

RE: Modem not connected to con/aux port ?

2000-08-03 Thread Radford Dion

If you are able to do a reverse telnet to the modem then obviously the modem
is connected to the router correctly. You can then enter an atdt command to
test if there is a telephone cable connected to the modem.

If you don't know what reverse telnet is refer to previous mails.

7206 reverse telnet to aux port [7:20336]

2001-09-18 Thread Ed Horley

Alright, I am being a slacker, I can't remember the port number for the aux
port on the 7206 routers. I am setting up another router at a remote site
and have a console cable running from the aux port of the 7206 into the
console port of the new router (36xx) and I can't remember the port number
to do the reverse telnet.

Anyway if you know it or can find it on CCO before me ;-) I would appreciate
it.

Thanks,
Ed

you can use AUX port as the backup of the primary link. The aux port will be
the

interface asynchrnous xx (you can check the xx by typing show line, and you
can see which number xx is that)...

so at the primary link, tyou can use:

backup interface async xx

You were right on in asking about the async port. That will be the physical
interface to your dialer1. Your basical config may look something like this
interface async1
ip unnumbered ethernet0
no ip directed-broadcast
encap ppp
no ip route-cache
no ip mroute-cache
async mode dedicated
fair-queue 64 16 0
no cdp enable
ppp authentication chap

Check out this link as it provides a lot of information for DDR.

Watch the wrap.

Using Aux port as console connection [7:21720]

2001-10-02 Thread Lists Wizard

Hi Group

Is it possible to use the aux port as an alternative to the console port? I
mean can I connect my pc serial port to the aux port instead of the console?
If that is possible do I have to use a roll-over cable?

Thanks

Lw
