Your problem is not unique as I had the same problem for months with
Debian Lenny. Attempts to upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze (with a test
machine) ended in disaster.

This isn't the place to discuss your upgrade disaster, but I'm curious
to know what you call a disaster. I've upgraded a few Debian machines
from Lenny to Squeeze, with no disasters. You must have been doing
something a little strange. Lenny is no longer supported by security
updates, and running ClamAV on it seems a bit like polishing your car
instead of changing the oil, and fitting new tyres.

Anyway, with Debian Lenny, I didn't have to uninstall any Debian
packages and if I did I would loose the files in /etc/init.d/clamav-*.

That is expected. Probably even required. :)

The key for me is to figure out where to put all the
clamav-0.97.x.tar.gz files so that Debian Lenny can find them.

The system does not refer to the sources after the package is built.
Debian Lenny does not need to 'find them', nor does any other system,
and after you have built and installed the package you can delete both
the source tarball and the entire package build tree.

Luckily, Debian Lenny is fairly Linux Standard Base complaint:

Compliant. Sorry. :)

[...] As an example, in Debian Lenny, clamd.conf is in /etc/clamav/;
but the tar.gz with ./configure would place the said file in
/usr/src/ [...]

No, it is *you* who are placing the files there. You can place the
source files wherever you wish although I strongly recommend that you
do not put them in /usr/src but instead put them in a subdirectory of
your home directory. I have good reasons for that recommendation...

[...] To solve the problem (as root) My bad! I know!

... unnecessary privileges being one of them ...

2. Download the latest (July 2012) stable source:
# cd /usr/src wget
http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamav/files/clamav/0.97.5/clamav-0.97.5.tar.gz

... cluttering up system areas with junk being another.

3. Decompress:
# cd /usr/src tar xvzf clamav-0.97.5.tar.gz

Unnecessary 'cd' commands.

4. Compile with make
# cd /usr/src/clamav-0.97.5 ./configure ?sysconfdir=/etc/clamav ?exec_prefix=/usr
make make install

Strange ? characters in strange places. Much better to use your home
directory, to build packages as a non-privileged user. Don't use /usr
as exec_prefix unless you really want to overwrite things that might
already be there. Give the commands separately and inspect the output
at each stage to make sure it's what you want/expect. Make sure that
before you build you have suitable system user accounts for ClamAV to
use if it is to runs as a daemon or give arguments to the 'configure'
script so that system accounts are not required. It's in the docs.

$ cd# Change to your home directory
$ mkdir build # Create a directory to build things in
$ cd build # Move into that directtory
$ wget .../clamav-x.xx.x.tar.gz # Fetch the source tarball
$ tar xzf clamav-x.xx.x.tar.gz  # Unpack it
$ cd clamav-x.xx.x # Go to the top of the ClamAV source tree
$ less -S README# Chill with some documentation. ;)
$ less -S INSTALL   # More documentation ;)
$ cd docs [...] cd ..   # More documentation ;)
$ ./configure --help | less -S  # More documentation ;)
$ ./configure (options) # Configure the source tree for your system
$ make # Compile the sources to produce binaries etc.
$ make check# IF you've read the documentation AND
$ su# IF you're happy with the output AND
# make install # IF you need to install (as root)
# exit # Done
$

5. Once complete:
# /etc/init.d/clamav-daemon restart

Your instruction to start a daemon begs questions. It is not clear to
me that most readers (you?) understand the use of the ClamAV daemon.
It is not like running one of the anti-virus tools widely available
for Windows platforms, and simply running it affords no protection
whatever to a system which runs it. It just loads a few databases
(and so it uses a lot of memory) and waits for instructions to scan
something, from for example clamav-milter or clamdscan, using the
databases which it has loaded.

It is also not clear to me that, having built the latest version of
ClamAV, you now have a set of databases suitable for it to use. You
have given no instructions here about updating them, nor do you check
for example that 'freshclam' will be doing what it should be doing to
keep the databases up to date. It's all covered in the documentation
and this pseudo-HOWTO seems to me to do little but muddy the waters.

Are you somewhere near Chixizhen?

apt-get remove package
apt-get purge package

make install

Please describe any messages that you saw when you did 'make install'

that you can review it later. Type 'exit' to quit the shell which is
saving the session so that you can view the record. You can then copy
and paste interesting parts of the record to a mailing list. :)

anybody have a tuto or manual that help me with this issues???

You could look in /var/cache/apt/archives for the .deb files which
contain the packages that you mentioned. You can use the command

dpkg --info packagefile.deb

to get useful information about them and

dpkg-deb --contents packagefile.deb

to get a list of the files, most of which you can probably just delete.
Rather than deleting them it might be safe to move them somewhere where
the system won't find them and make them unreadable with chmod a-rwx. :)

It is unrealistic to expect people to produce manuals or tutorials for
every permutation of users' whim. You need to learn about the systems,
learn about the packages, learn about their installation, learn about
their operation and learn about how they must be maintained. Yes, it's
learn, learn, learn, learn, learn. Sorry. At least you have learned
now how much work the package maintainers are doing for you. :)

If the OP did exactly as he said the system would have installed Clamav in
/usr/local. While it is possible I suppose that his RPM distro does the same,
I've not seen it an any I've installed. If true the consequence is clamd
installed fine but is no longer in his path.

Running make -n install 21 |less will reveal all.

1. Make sure you have zlib-devl, gcc and make (I use gcc-4.3):

Please note: the key to a successful install in Debian is in No. 4 above by
telling ./configure with the correct sys-config-directory and exec_prefix. Good

You should probably remove all of them. If you aren't sure which ones are

running:

$ dpkg -l | grep -i clamav

But I never got a valid instalation, when I tried to invoke clamd I

Once you remove all the Ubuntu-provided packages, you should look at the output
of

$ ldd /path/to/clamd# Perhaps /usr/local/sbin/clamd

To see which libclamav the binary is linked to. My guess is that there isn't
any kind of
tutorial for from repo-clamav to manual-clamav. Hope that helps.

Local update was not successful. The first warning that freshclam is

did connect and get the daily.cvd file from the mirror. It had to do that
in order to perform the version check. As you set this up you can run
freshclam with -v to get more details and see which steps are succeeding.

Check the mirror to make sure there is a new daily.cvd there. If it's daily.cld
then you still have scripted updates enabled there and need to turn it off.

nope this is what maillist is designed for in the first place.

another possible is as follows:

in the local master freshclam do a normal update check, setup an on
update, execute this script in freshclam.conf, the script do an local
rsync from your own freshclam to all remaining clamd datadirs via rsync,
make the clamds there have a low check value so that all reloads if
database dirs is changed

and then disable freshclam on the clients, since it done entirely from
the master freshclam to the whole clouds of servers

Well, yes and no. Read the text:
- Freshclam says that ClamAV is version 0.97.3 instead of your new
0.97.5. Make sure you're running the binaries from 0.97.5 (you clearly
don't).
- Freshclam says main.cvd is up to date, so that should be fine.
Although freshclam can't download daily.cvd from some mirror, it will be
trying other mirrors for that.

 WARNING: Can't download daily.cvd from 10.2.3.21
freshclam is complaining that it cannot get the CVD file from your private
mirror. Since you are forcing the client servers to check only your private
mirror, that is not okay. There is no other mirror it can try. I doubt we
can help with that, but your web logs on 10.2.3.21 should show the servers
requesting the CVD files. If you do not see any web requests for daily.cvd
in the web logs on the mirror, then you have a firewall or network or
interface issue to fight. If the requests are in the log, it could be
conflicting with your own CVD update scripts.

I can tell you that your first log in this thread did show a successful
download and update of daily.cvd.
 daily.cvd updated (version: 15227, sigs: 250068, f-level: 63, builder:
guitar)
From a protection perspective, lines like these are what you want to see on
your servers. I know the warnings about the diff file attempts in that
first log are noisy, but the full download did lead to a successful update.
Al was right about turning off the patch checks with the ScriptedUpdate
setting in your client config.

Cheers

I presume the PR280045 bug is only an issue on 10.4.x. I have never
seen any compiler errors compiling on 10.5.x

clamXav still uses freshclam to update the virus db. Clicking Open
Update log opens freshclam.log.. Automatic update schedule is set in
clamXav:Preferences and I think does not require Sentry to be running.

clamXav Sentry provides the folder watching feature.

I have questioned whether clamXav needs it own antivirus database. My
clamXAV works fine with the standard clamAV default build/install,
using a symlink to redirect /usr/local/clamXav to /usr/local, since
the instructions for clamXav BYO engines didn't work for me.

ClamAV install requires one permission tweak to enable incremental
updates. Incremental updates are still broken in clamXav. clamXav
install does not support digital signatures either.

(See earlier thread on the Can't create directory error for informed
answer on how to fix the permissions problem properly.)

I downloaded the install package ClamXav_1.1.1_Universal_e951.dmg from

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/
 for
free.

The ERROR: chdir_tmp: Can't create directory
./clamav-f2e7533e176a61f5a916c398ddacf497

depends on a faulty installation routine I think.

Im just a simple Mac user not a developer. So I
need someone who tells me what to do step by
step.

I'm not familiar with Unix and cannot build any
installation package by myself.
The web
site http://www.oitc.com/ctw/clamavhttp://www.oitc.com/ctw/clamav
doesn't help. I'm using OS X 10.4.11, not OS X
10.5!

Well ClamXav doesn't do a normal install as it
installs clamav into /usr/local/clamXav and from
the docs doesn't appear to run the deamon either.
If you are just using it to do simple checks on
your desktop or laptop you should be fine as
0.95.1 will still work for now.

Where did you get the install for clamav on the

using the never revision. If you got it from

What version of clamav? (the one described in the subject?)
The current version is 0.93.1.

I don't know what is the problem with the update, but if you're running
a clamav that old, it is missing a lot of features already, and even if
you update the DB, it won't detect a lot of viruses that 0.93.1 will.

 Hi,
Judging by the fact that the rpm's you have installed are el4 arch, I am
assuming you are using RHEL, Centos, or another distro which is designed
to be
 binary compatible.

Would it not just be easier to use Yum or similar package manager from
your
distro? Import Dag's repo details (he provides an RPM for this), then
every time
you come to upgrade clam, you could you yum upgrade clam, and have it
taken
 care of for you.

 Best Regards,
 Richard

The virus signatures will work in both versions, but I would recommend
upgrading to .90.2. Outside of a slight change in config file format,
it's a fairly easy upgrade.

That's not right. With the 0.88 you can't make use of a new signature
format we added. 0.8x will work but those signatures will be ignored.

The ClamAV project doesn't make packages for any particular system. There
is a new version of ClamAV, but your package maintainer has not updated
the package yet.

Either email the package maintainer, or try building a version directly.

Most package maintainers are not pushing 0.88.3, as it is not a security
fix.

I agree that building a package takes just a few minutes.

It's there in the very recent past in the list archives, but I'll
answer this one anyway.

You need to install the clamav-server rpm as well now, this only
changed in 0.87.1 in the CrashHat rpms.

You have the old forgotten installation on /usr/local/.
Go through /usr/local/{bin,lib,etc,var,log} and remove
old files manually.

Re: [Clamav-users] Clamav Update with Fedora Core

2005-09-21 Thread Stephen J. Smoogen
The best bet would be to get the latest SRPM from fedora extras or
dag's repository, and then doing the following on a machine that has a
fedora core 2 build environment

wget
http://fedoraproject.org/extras/3/i386/fedora-rpmdevtools-1.1-1.fc3.noarch.rpm
su root
rpm -ivh fedora-rpmdevtools-1.1-1.fc3.noarch.rpm
exit

/usr/bin/fedora-buildrpmtree

wget http://fedoraproject.org/extras/3/SRPMS/clamav-0.87-1.fc3.src.rpm
rpm -ivh clamav-0.87-1.fc3.src.rpm
cd rpmbuild/SPECS
rpmbuild -ba clamav.spec

this should work.. but Fed Core 2 is rather old and eol so I cant help
much on any compile errors at this point.

Now you will need to drop your mail server for a bit and remove all
the old clamav binaries. If they were not done with rpms.. its best to
use find and grep for clamav for stuff.

cd ~/rpmbuild/RPMS/i386
su root
rpm -Uvh clamav-*

then you will need to test that sendmail works with it.. and it should work.

Try this way it work for me. go to http://www.clamav.net
click on Download binary packages and ports
click on Fedora2: http://crash.fce.vutbr.cz/crash-hat/2/clamav/
then download clamav-0.87-1.i386.rpm and clamav-devel-0.87-1.i386.rpm into
some directory that belong to you.

goto the directory that you download files into it
use the rpm command to update for examp.
rpm -Uhv clamav*

the option -U mean upgrade package

Anyone can help me where I found the documentations

clamav/clamd and restart the service? (amavisd-new is also running in a
fairly old version but there are no known issues, so I do not plan to
upgrade amavisd at the moment.)

A bit late, I would say ;-)
1. Save your configs (.../etc/clamav.conf)
2. Uninstall _everything_ related to clam. Don't forget libclamav.
3. Install new.
4. Configure clamav by using the new config templates. Too much has
changed since 0.65. Look at your old configs only for crucial paths like
log files and socket locations.
5. Check if clamd's socket location in amavisd-new's configuration.
6. set up start scripts (and/or a crontab for freshclam)
6. You should be done.

That's all very nice to say, but while you may have updated the RPM,
you've still got binaries (maybe from a source install) on the system.

So, as I said before, remove the old binaries (and libraries) from
your system then reinstall. I'd also suggest reading the list archive
where you'll get more information.

I'd also love to see a clamav project on SF. I want to see CVS access
 too.

Generally I'm very happy with ElektraPro and I don't need to take care for
the mailing lists and other issues (thanks NERvOUs!). There's a database mirror
updated manually - clamav.ozforces.com, so you can just put it in the first
line of mirrors.txt if you prefer it. Another official mirrors are
clamav.essentkabel.com (updated from elektrapro) and clamav.sxs-linux.org
(rsync from ozforces).

CVS access will be available in the next month.

BTW, Flinn, some time ago you mentioned a libtool problem - I just realised
the libtool script has been patched (and this is a possible bug on OpenBSD):

Fri Sep 20 02:37:04 CEST 2002
-
..
  * libtool fix - now it allows old style -pthread BSD flag (you can find
the changes by searching my name in ltmain.sh/libtool).

Also please send me ./configure output from OpenBSD 3.1 and 3.3. I can't
incorporate your patches, because they're platform dependent and I don't know
how to detect openbsd versions in configure.in. Thanks.

Best regards,

Glad the problem is fixed.

I certainly tried to find out what had happened, but didn't get any

I'd like to suggest that ClamAV be moved to SourceForge.net. This would
resolve these types of outage problems, and would place less reliability
upon one or two web sites for making the code and snapshots
