[Cooker] Install Report of mdk91beta
(I would have posted this to bugzilla but i've had problems with logging into a user account to post this stuff too. Anyhow, it is cooker related.) Install Problems: The install is looking more polished then mdk90. 1) [When booting with the rescue cdrom] That @#$@#$ terminal beep on the rescue boot of the mdk91 cdrom is turned on! 2) [At the end of the install] X11 settings are set to custom (default) when modifying them. (The applet doesn't remember the settings made, but the config file appears to be written to with the modified settings). 3) [Near the end of the of the install] The ok or done button when configuring which services to start on boot is hidden or placed off the display screen. I had to use the keyboard keys (tab/cursors) to get to the next screen (especially since the links/buttons on the far left menu were inoperable). 4) [Networking config] It found my orinoco gold wireless pcmcia card ;-) and configured it (without locking the system!). however, i also have a eepro100 on an actiontek minipci card which it failed to properly configure (maybe i screwed up here..dunno). So i used netconf to fix things. One scenario I didn't like is that the install configured my wireless as eth0 and my nic as eth1. Probabely should have configured the wireless as eth1 and the nic as eth0 as the wireless is a removable pcmcia cardbut come to think of it, there are now minipci cards with wireless nics. Package Related Problems: 4) Evolution appears to be a little buggy (crashed once on Summary setup...appears to be an app specific problem. Probabely needs an additional patch/upgrade to make it more stable.). I was also screwing around in mdk90 with rebuilding and installing evolution (including all it's depends ie libbonobo, ...) and on starting evolution-1.2.1-1mdk, it wiped out all of my evolution-1.0.8-3mdk mail server settings (filters/virtual settings were ok though). So I regressed to evolution-1.0.8-3mdk. Somebody may want to verify this! Some of the other evolution settings were also wiped-out...but some were migrated with the upgrade. 5) when rpm --rebuild gnome-terminal missing libncurses-devel dep 6) Gnome Desktop appears to have a delay when doing/executing anything in it. (ie gaining keyboard/mouse focus of gnome-terminal and typing in the terminal) 7) Click Play users may grumble a bit about not having an xconfig tool to manage their /etc/sysconfig/desktop file My big grumble: Bah! The kernel wants to use up all of my ram for cache! This is really a problem with rpm --rebuild (looks like when tar -jxvf files is being processed during specfile execution, ram is not being re-claimed from cache). Bah! and the cache performance isn't so hot. I would rather have nocache since it only saves me 30% startup time on mozilla and I only startup mozilla once on bootup and i rarely reboot (like 1-3 days on my laptop). I've already researched some options such as adding to lilo.conf append nocache but appears to have no effect. And I can't find anywhere in /proc to modify the cache settings (think in kernel-2.2 there were /proc files that could be modded, now it's all within .c/.h files?). Eh, I have 512MB of ram. On initial startup and with X11, I end up with ~80MB used. after an rpm --rebuild, I end up with ~11MB free and ~380MB cached! I do see some reclaiming of the cache file after awhile...dunno. Other minor notes: 1) kernel has no xfs fs support. looked at the changelog and says * xfs integrated upstream.? So much for accessing my external hdd via ieee1394 as it is an xfs fs. 2) i'm seeing stuff in the kernel changelog and messages about swsuspend, however, I can't find anything with man apm (supposedly a patch for apm)etc, or howto implement it. This might be a good reason to use ext3 fs on my laptop now. mmm..forgot to grep the kernel-source Documentation for swsuspend. (noticed kernel is acpi...etc) -- Roger - Verify my pgp/gnupg signature on my homepage: http://www.eskimo.com/~roger/index.html

On Sunday 28 July 2002 06:04, Danny Tholen wrote: I thought all of this was done by cron only. Why not just choose either cron or anacron? Danny anacron works by relative time, ie, the amount of system uptime that has passed since the last time it did something, that way if some task is scheduled to happen every 24 hours, but the machine only runs 16 hours a day, anacron will run the job when 24 hours of uptime have accummulated since the last time it ran the job. cron works by absolute time. If a job is scheduled for 0400 every Sunday, but the machine is never turned on at 0400 on Sunday, the job will never be run because cron doesn't worry about jobs that got missed when the system was down, it thinks only what it needs to do next. So... For many desktop machines, anacron is a better choice, while for servers and other always-on systems, cron does just fine (of course anacron would work just as well, IMHO, on such systems...) Noticed a few things, 1. When booting from a floppy (nfs install), the Advanced screen (F2) has a spelling error: secutiry=n should be seceurity-n 2. GUI install; while formatting partitions, the information box is blank until the end when flashes up the last partion formatted, then immediately goes on the package group selection. 3. I asume that new graphics will be supplied later (during package installation) that say 9.0 instead of 8.2. 4. On the main diag log for Printer Installation: a) the text: ...available for Star Office/OpenOffice.org should may be?? have the .org removed?? b) Changing the lable on the 'Quit' button to Done or OK would be better, more conistent with other dialogs 5. Old whine - what are the chances of having the selected services dumped to the auto_inst.cfg file? 6. When the option Clean tmp is selected in the Bootloader dialog, an fstab entry gets created which mounts the tmpfs as /tmp. Is there a reason for this? Why not just let the mandrake_everytime script do the clean up? The reason I ask is that I have had a number of applications crash and complain about the /tmp partition being full. 7. With the KDE desk top, the Tip of the Day popup seems to be twice as wide as the available display area. 8. Within the first time wizard, Konqueror seems to segfaul (11) when I select the '...I already have an account/thanks' button on the mandrake web page. 9. With KOffice Suite running, I got a segfaul 11 when I exit KOffice with any of the applications open. Closing the application first, then exiting seems OK. I would appreciate any hints that could be forwarded to me about areas of the drakx auto install features that have changed. Best regards, Dave

A few minor things: At selecting security level, under the box selecting the security level it says: 'Security Administrator (login or email)'. I do not understand why this is there. In a lot of places, it still says Mandrake 8.2. In the 'commercials' during package installation it talks about versions of KDE and GNOME which seem to be outdated. The new faces are wonderfull! Well, ok, perhaps security hole is not an appropriate phrase. Maybe security concern would be a better way to put it. However, as you stated before, we're looking at newbies here... newbies who may not know about .htaccess. In essence, we're helping protect the newbie apache admin. I don't think newbies will install the apache *web server* to act as a file manager.. if they're going to look for a file manager, I don't think they'll be as creative as you and will use a tool intended to be a file manager. As far as calling it punishing everyone else, that's just as laughable as me calling it a security hole. I hardly see this as punishment considering you must be savvy enough to make the necessary changes yourself. I really think that there is probably a low percentage of people who decide to take the apache web server and use it as the apache file manager. This has absolutely nothing to do with whether apache works or not out of the box. It absolutely does depending on how you intend to use it. Sure. And we intend for apache to be used as a web server and, again, we configure it as such. If you don't like that, I suppose you could contribute a apache-filemgr package. Besides, this really is a moot point since it likely will not be changing anytime soon. I guess you'll just have to live with that. Sorry. While we can't control what you use a software package for, we can certainly control how we package it. And we've deviced, since a long time ago, to package apache as a web server... if you choose to use it somehow else, then you must deal with reconfiguring it to suit your (nonstandard) needs. -- MandrakeSoft Security; http://www.mandrakesecure.net/ lynx -source http://www.freezer-burn.org/bios/vdanen.gpg | gpg --import 1024D/FE6F2AFD 88D8 0D23 8D4B 3407 5BD7 66F9 2043 D0E5 FE6F 2AFD Current Linux kernel 2.4.8-34.1mdk uptime: 41 days 1 hour 59 minutes. msg58409/pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

No, not for me it's not that hard to turn on, but I remember the first time I used Apache, RH 5.2 days. All I had to do was install it, and it was fully functional, it was great! I didn't know anything about web servers at the time, I didn't know it would be that easy (thought I would have to configure it and stuff, not that that'd be too bad, I was configuring samba by hand back then). Now think about a total newbie. They install Mandrake, and Apache, and it's not functional. What to do? You even have to find the options in commonhttpd.conf which isn't even a standard thing. Sure it wasn't that *hard* for *me* to do, but it still took a while to figure it out. --- Ben Reser [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Sat, Mar 02, 2002 at 10:42:40PM -0800, David Walser wrote: I agree. You don't even have to touch commonhttpd.conf. echo 'Options Indexes' .htaccess Or any of the several other places you can turn it on. At any rate there is tons of documentation. Simple searches of the web would return information on how to do this. Various mailing lists (such as newbie@) could answer this. However, I really don't think most people use this functionality on average anyway. Most people put up index files. And those that don't generally are more sophisticated users that know how to turn it on anyway. The real reason for disabling this is to help protect (but not completly protect) the very newbies that you are trying to help. Many people do foolish things. Like putting their .htpasswd files in webaccessible locations or putting other files they wouldn't intend to have accessible to the web. With Indexes on globally by default these files are there for anyone to browse. Even if you give these files hard to guess names they are advertised as available to view. -- Ben Reser [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://ben.reser.org What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy? - Ghandi

I played around with it a little more. The distorted background happens Only if you are using kdm. It Does Not happen if you are using gdm. Repeat..it Does not happen if you use gdm. To me this says that the problem Is Not dri with the r128 but with kdm. I have a feeling that even if dri is disabled the kdm login screen as current still will not display properly with the r128. Charles For me kdm displays properly if I disable glx/dri. And I have stability issues with enabled glx/dri, X freezes sometimes, probably when the load is somewhat higher (can't reproduce). I hope that the r128 issues will be fixed before release. Otherwise Mdk should disable glx/dri. If so, it would be nice, if users could find a note. With the -16 kernel my system did nothing but freeze, so often and badly in fact that I pulled the r128 card and stuck in a ViperII (S3 Savage). I put the r128 back in after installing the -18 kernel. Using glx and dri, other than the kdm login screen, I have had no problem. No freezes no crashes and all 3d apps run well and since using gdm no login screen problem. It may be worth noting again that I am running the r128 on the -18 kernel Without fb. Charles

[Cooker] Today's Cooker install report (different machine)
I have three very different machines to test Cooker on. I have already reported on my Gateway 9150XL notebook, and my Asus A7V based AMD machine. Now comes the fun one (Gateway G6-400 - PII/400 with adaptec 2940 scsi controller and ls-120 drive) I apologize in advance for having to attach the logs - but I see no other way to share the exact config of the machine. Here's the short list of problems: 1) Strange messages during boot: kernel: hda: No disk in drive kernel: Unknown bridge resource 0: assuming transparent kernel: devfs_register(disc): could not append to parent, err: -17 2) Since a while now on this machine - after I install successfully with DrakX (which appears to perform the bootloader OK - ie: no errors) - then reboot, I only get LI (01 01) problems. I simply have to reboot using rescue disk, chroot /mnt and rerun lilo -v then reboot - the world is back in order again - what's with that? 3) What's with the disappearance of Aurora and the new boot-splash? I'm not so heart broken that aurora is gone, but the new boot screen is weird (with the little clocks in it) but I simply get a normal text boot-up (some things appear to be hidden from me during boot). And MCC doesn't reflect the new world (without Aurora) because there is still an option for Aurora in MCC but it doesn't work anymore!! 4) I get strange CDrom problems on the SCSI bus (because I have both my burned and normal CDrom on the SCSI bus) - I have always seemd to have problems with the CD activity on this machine with Mandrake (since 8.0) 5) The floppy drive (and LS-120) always shows up under KDE as already mounted with no media in it . . when I try to unmount it (with media in) it doesn't allow me because I'm not root 6) The floppy formatter doesn't like the ls-120 drive and neither does the eject command. That's it for now. Cheers, R.Fox stuff.tar.bz2 Description: application/bzip

I agree about the weird part. I don't install on this machine that often, but promise to try that next time I do! This problem has been there for quite some time - I just haven't reported it because there were always problems with the Adaptec 2940 based machines in the past. [Cooker] The Good, the Bad and the Ugly latest Cooker install report
I always use my Gateway 9150XL notebook with 20 Gig drive, 320M memory, DVD/LS-120 - CS46xx sound and ATI Rage LT pro graphic. Oh, also a Xircom Realport Cardbus 10/100 (RBEM-56G) The Good: 1) Draktools getting progressively better 2) hardware support improving 3) All the latest greatest packages!!! The Bad: 1) Still sound problems in KDE (reported by everyone else) 2) new DHCP problem - my Xircom card initializes but no ifup eth0 is performed - therefore I have to do it manually to get an IP address 3) Squid complains about fully qualified hostname (see logs) 4) Still wishing my SIIG USB Card reader would work (reported it to harddrake already - vendor product 0x7cc/0x4) 5) An error adding Cooker source to RPMDRAKE (update of lists works, but get a generic error when adding the source) 6) KDE Konqueror ftp to another machine on local network - hangs The Ugly: 1) Lilo boot menu - even with bootsplash - Suse has the one-up here 2) No Mosfet Liquid theme included (with transparancy in KDE 2.2.2) 3) no cool icon sets outside of KDE stock (like iKons or slick) A suggestion: Could you add an option under the package selection screen of DrakX under Window Managers for KDE3 Beta 2 ? This would install KDE3 B2 alongside KDE2 automatically without the hassle of trying to add it manually (of course with the usual warnings and all about BETA softwares!) - This would also put the selection under the KDM login screen for either KDE2 or 3 . . . This would be sweet. Attached are the output of drake-report and the /var/log/messages and syslog for informational purposes. Overall feel of the 8.2 B2 release is that it is a definite step in the right direction but has several teething problems and has a way to go before proving to be solid (hopefully we are going to have more betas and RCs this go around!) [Cooker] install report bugs: 31.1
Latest rsync from ftp.uninett.no (yes, it's nearly impossible to connect!!!) Mandrake: how about another always-up-to-date rsync mirror like ftp.uninett.no !??! Anyway, here are the bugs: 1. Diskdrake (during install): if you choose (in options) to have an encrypted filesystem, it asks for a password that must be at least 20 (!!) characters long. Sure this makes it very secure, but 20 is somewhat over the top - non? 2. Diskdrake (during install): This one i could reproduce - I tried because it seemed a somewhat strange bug. Conditions: Two harddrives (hda hdd). Convert one of the partitions ( /mnt/haha - ext2 - hda5 ) to encrypted mode. / and /home partitions on hdd. click Done Format / and /home on hdd Error message (during formatting): fsck failed with exitcode 8 or signal 0 Install log on F3: (excerpt which looks suspicious) calling losetup -p 0 -e AES128 /dev/loop0 /dev/hda5 mounting /dev/loop0 on /mnt/mnt/haha as type ext2, options encrypted, encryption=AES128 running fsck.ext2 -a /dev/loop0 warning: fsck failed with exitcode 8 or signal 0 at /usr/bin/perl-install/fs.pm line 620 Reproduceability: I could reproduce this bug given the same Conditions, but i could not reproduce it if i had all three partitions ( /mnt/haha and / and /home ) on hdd. good luck with this one! 3.KDE: The first time I installed kde 2.2.2 3.0 When logging in with default windowmanager selected i log into kde3 and not kde2.2.2. The two are not able to co-exist happily (as has been reported on this list) probably because they use the same directory to store their config files. Also i can't log into kde 2.2.2, even when selecting KDE before login, i always login to kde3. 4.MCC: After a clean reinstall, in KDE (2.2.2): (this bug has been reported before, but is still important) MCC does not have a surrounding frame that would allow it to be moved/closed/resized. MCC is always in the foreground. 5. Hardware configuration: With my soundcard (Yamaha YMF-724) there is no out-of-the-box sound. In sound mixer (KDE) the Asahi Kasei AK4540 mixer has following default settings that need to be changed to get audio. It would be nice if these were set up correctly: PCM device is muted and volume set to 0 Master device is muted and volume set to 0 Wave Playback Volume device (4th from the left) has volume set to 0 That's all for now! -- Sascha Noyes OpenPGP public key keyID: 7F9C4D6F Encrypted mail much preferred

[Cooker] Install Report DrakX 1.625
Hi, 1. Tried the latest and I am still getting X crashing. Seems that the contents of the directory Mandrake/mdkinst/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts is missing. Copied a set of files from the directory of the 8.1 install and now the GUI comes up ok. 2. F2 Help screen (stage1) has security spelt wrong. 3. Getting a continuous stream of GTK Warning messages about locales on F1 console. 4. See perl warning messages about locale as packages are being installed; on the F1 console. I thought that these were presented on the F3 display? For auto install, I see a couple just before Entering step Configuring mouse, then occassionally as packages are being installed. 5. No mention of the Update packages button on the Help screen for Installation Class. 6. X display still squished. Perhaps the mach64 fixes in 4.2 will fix my problem?? 7. Noticed that the extra groups problem with msec-/etc/group is fixed (along with a couple others). Thanks. However, I noticed that the users are no longer automatically added to the various groups. Is this intentional? Best regards Dave

[Cooker] Install report of Cooker (17 Mar 2001)
Hi! I want to report problems with my clean install of Cooker (rsync from 17 Mar 2001): - some of the packages are not in the rpmslist (e.g. libstc++2.10) - so I added them to get a complete CD-R set. There are still some unresolved dependencies (like scrollkeeper and an old libstdc++). I could give more details on this if required. - I booted from the first CD-R, it booted fine but it didn't find my SCSI CD-ROMs. It detected my harddisks - which are connected to the same SCSI adapter - but no CD-ROM and no CD-R burner. To procceed I repaired and connected a IDE CD-ROM device. I booted - installed the base system without any further problems. - When X was started after booting the system - my monitor reported that sync is out of range. It worked with the X of the installation process. This is a bug I read on this list recently. (I have a mga 200 graphics adapter and use the XFree-4.0.2-11mdk) - The backspace key (console) behaved not correctly. Is switched to US keyboard layout and back to German. That seems to have fixed the problem. - As this was my first clean Cooker install I was rather impressed by the changes of the installer since 7.2. For my taste it is almost too Windows-like :) I hope X and the SCSI installation problems will be fixed until next week - I could do another install and test it again Alexander

Well I burned the beta iso's and this is how it turned out on a Abit kt7-raid mb with 256m and an IBM udma100 DeskStar 30g drive. Using Asus 7100 GeForce2 MX 32m vid card. SCSI card aha-1505. The install acted much like 7.2. I did notice on the partitioning that not all the directories were listed on the drop down menu. Seems to me that in 7.2 I could pick /boot. This install was done using expert ... Previously with 7.2 the scsi card worked on problem during the install setting it with aha=0x140,9,7,1. I did the same and it said it was located. However, when I booted up it was not present. See demg.txt ... said I had a conflict but this was not so before. When I run DrakConf and then exit the loose the screen and am left with a nice mouse pointer. Must do ctrl-alt-backspace. Same for both root and user. Tried deleting a user but errored with a ptmp error. Sawfish or is it Sawmill, can't remembe what the new name is, was installed but fails to run. It seems to start loading but then just sits there. Gnome does run. My RTL-8139 card works fine and nothing had to be changed. Not a big fan a watching only 3 images during the install. Made the install seem longer than watching each individual file go by. Noticed as well that the recpients line in netscape email is always blank ... can't type anything.
