Re: [slim] Seeking Rec's on optimizing sound quality.

2008-12-02 Thread JadeMonkee

I agree with aubuti.
One thing I've heard:
If you are using the digital out, apparently you are better off locking
the volume to 100% (an option in Squeezecentre), and using your amp to
control the volume. Apparently the digital signal has to be modified to
change the volume, and this goes against the digital purity philosophy.
I use analog out for this reason; my speakers (and their in-built DAC)
don't have a remote control, so I have to rely on the SqueezeBox to
adjust the volume. Plus, the DAC in the SB3 sounds good to me, so I'm
happy sticking with it.

Re: [slim] First Post; Please Help

2008-12-02 Thread JadeMonkee

Hi there,
I honestly believe that if you think your existing speakers are fine
for most of the music or movies you use them for, then changing to
either the Transporter, or even a Duet won't help because they aren't
related to the problem. Keep the ipod; I think the problem lies in your
music library.
I think the very fact that some songs sound good, and some songs sound
bad is because they are compressed at different levels.
Go into the settings in iTunes and tell us what quality (not just
format) you are ripping at.
If we here believe it is at an acceptable level (by default, I belive
it isn't), then create a (short) list of (some of) the songs that sound
bad.
You may find that these are the ones you downloaded. Play them and find
out what bitrate they are encoded at (this is the easiest way to find
out quality). If there is no bitrate info, then look at the file size.
It should be (for mp3 or mp4) about 1MB for every minute of a song (not
a definitie rule).
If the iTunes encoding quality is at a low level, then we've solved
your problem (and for free no less).
I'm almost positive you'll find that the songs that sound bad are
related to the quality at which they were encoded, and NOT your
equipment.
Those with smaller file sizes and lower bitrates will sound worse than
those with larger.
Save yourself the money, dig out your old CDs and rip them in a
lossless format; you certainly seem to have the storage available.
If you can't fit them all on your ipod in lossless format (it's about
10x larger than lossy), then rip to a high quality lossy (we can help
you in choosing which one).
There is plenty of information on the different formats available on
the internet. The 'wiki at Hydrogen Audio'
(http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/) is a goldmine.

Note that I am not an iTunes user, so can't answer any help questions
about it.

Hope that helps.

Oh, and you can't trust music you've downloaded from the internet for
quality. High quality downloads are usually few and far between.

2008-12-02 Thread MrSinatra

finally was able to download both.

5.1.5 does NOT seem to work.

3.51.27 DOES seem to work.

also, you have to right click the .hta file, go to properties, and
"unblock" and "apply" before using it, (at least with XP sp3 you do).

its seemingly working now, i'll be interested to see the results.

I have a bad habit of confronting besties when they are turning the heat

The BS of signal quality completely evaporates when dealing with

When they respond with the mantra, I just ask them where they got their

I believe the big retailers like Best Buy in the US and Comet in the UK
operate the same way as large supermarkets. Their whole cabling section
is actually managed by the brand leader, in this case Monster. It's
them who decide what products are displayed and how. Monster probably
don't even charge the store to stock the cables up front so the stock
remains Monsters until it is sold. In very large stores there might
even be a company rep stationed there to look after stock and "give
demos" etc.

So this isn't going to change any time soon, they are too entrenched
with the large chains.

What does it remove? Just the background image... hm...
I need 4-5 pages on that view, which will be impossible with flipping,

[slim] Trying to resolve tagging issues

2008-12-02 Thread m1abrams

So I am going through my collection with SC and noticed that I had some
tagging issues. Specifically with Album Artist. Note my music is all
FLAC and tagged with Album Artist. Well I have a few albums that are
showing up in SC as different albums even though they have the same
Album name, same Artist, and same Album Artist. Yet when SC scans them
some tracks get one album.id and others a different one. This appears
to happen to a handful of albums.

I am using MusicIP on SC 7.2.1 - 23630. Things I have done to resolve
this:
1. I made sure that the tagging for the album was correct using
dbpoweramps tagging ability.
2. Then I completely cleared MusicIP db and re-imported everything so
that it would not have stale data.
3. Did a clear and rescan of SC database

This did not clear up the issue.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2008-12-02 Thread jazztime

Well, I know this is one more request/suggestion for more information
(and possible more cluttered UI?). But I do think it is relevant:

When browsing an album it would be very nice to have the different
tracks numbered (tracknumber) - just like it is when you look at the
iPeng playlist, on the Transporter/Squeezebox display and in SC.

Especially when browsing multi disc sets (grouped into one album in
SC), it will be nice if the tracknumber (in browse album and in the
playlist) indicates the discnumber and the tracknumber, eg "2-1" (disk
2, track 1). Just like it does on the Transporter/Squeezebox display
and in SC (but not in the iPeng playlist at the moment. If disk 1 has 6
tracks, track 1 on disc 2 is numbered "7" in the iPeng playlist).

Actually I would prefer if the tracknumber is also displayed on the Now
Playing screen (probably just in front of the track title?).

Not likely. The markup on such "incidentals" are where the retailers
really make their margins. The actual hardware (tv, stereo, computer,
etc..) are so competitive the markups are usually quite slim. Monster
is a marketing machine and a well known brand name. The retailers can
draw from this and make big $$$ selling them.

I wouldn't use a Monster cable even if they were free (for the issues
mentioned in this thread and other issues). But their target market of
the uninformed and gullible will always be there to buy up their
overpriced merchandise.

Beyond doing what you are doing, spreading the word, there is little
that can be done to get the big retailers to stop carrying such a
brand. :(

Interesting reading - certainly the Dolby stuff sounds like just what
we're looking for, albeit at a cost. Not sure if Slim/Logitech would
consider licensing something like that for use. Seems the introduction
of a gain parameter is likely to be implemented quicker.

UK Boom found for 169 inc. free shipping

2008-12-02 Thread twynne

Recently went looking for another Boom and came across an excellent
price - £169 with free shipping! (That's £30 less than most UK online
retailers.) It's also Citylink delivery which, in my case, arrived
next day - at no charge!

And no, I'm not affiliated in any way - just a happy customer.

http://www.cooltopia.com/product.php/262/1/a9e3f0605223dfe4b3a444353d93c34f

Though I've not comparison-shopped the other Slim devices, I'd assume
they're decent prices too. Duet and Controller certainly looks
competitive. Classic not so much.

Happy shopping! :-)

The Chancellor said that ultimately it was for each business to decide

Personally, I hope companies who didn't reduce prices in line with the

Re: [slim] 96/24 Support for SqueezeBox 3

2008-12-02 Thread Patrick Dixon

I found some problems before I could get this to work (on Ubuntu).

With sox 14.0 the transcode line above doesn't work, but this does:-

flc flc transcode *
# FT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}D:{RESAMPLE=-r %d}
[flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [sox] -t wav - -t flac
RESAMPLE$ -

I also had to edit /etc/squeezecenter/convert.conf because SC7 appears
to ignore /usr/share/squeezecenter/custom-convert.conf

I then had to replace /usr/share/squeezecenter/Bin/i386-linux/sox with
a link to /usr/bin/sox

I am still not 100% sure it's maintaining the 24 bits though ...

Re: [slim] Suggestion: Player-specific playlists

2008-12-02 Thread MeSue

What about creating folders in the playlist directory with the same
names as the SB players. When playlists are in a folder matching the
player name, they are only shown for that player.

But then if you have some lists you want on more than one player, but
not all players, they'd have to be duplicated, so maybe it's not such a
great way to implement it.

Just having a folder hierarchy for playlists would be helpful, IMO. I
think there is an open bug for this. I seem to recall it was supported
once, but not any longer.

Re: [slim] Best bang for buck with Music Services

2008-12-02 Thread Mark W

Yes, there have been problems with Rhapsody, mostly connection problems
due to their servers going down and the way they process accounts- I
think. I also have a Pandora account that is much cheaper ($3 vs $15
per month), it's much more reliable, and I like it's ability to zero in
on what you like for music.

But, I just really like having access to all of the music directly
(like listening to an album...), and the ability to load it into my MP3
player. So, I would say that if you want to have just one music service
with very high reliability, and very low cost, Rhapsody isn't there yet.
But it still has so much going for it that I'm willing to put up with
the problems for now, and hope that they'll become more stable over
time...

I wonder if this might be country-specific. I'm referring specifically
to UK TV channels - and in my experience it seems frequently the case
that commercials are uncomfortably loud. In fact when watching late at
night I'm constantly adjusting the volume so as not to disturb the
neighbours!

[slim] Suggestion: Player-specific playlists

2008-12-02 Thread pablolie

It may sound like an exotic request (which I remember reading about 3
years ago, in my early SB days, but could not find the thread), but as
we have more and more SB in our houses (I have 5 active ones, and 2
momentarily inactive ones), it would be nice to have player-specific or
person specific playlists.

This could be achieved 2 ways:

(1) By linking a playlist to one or more or all players.

(2) By having a person specific menu item that links to a filter or
similar with playlist and favorite preferences.

I think it would make navigation easier for people in the household
that do not want to be bothered with all menu options and just want to
find a few playlists for their particular mood. My wife is a primary
example: to this day, she prefers the strightforward act of plating a
CD in our bedroom system - typically ocean sounds to go to sleep, and
some chillout music in the morning. I have those as playlists of
course, but they are hidden deep in the hierarchy of the Controller
navigation.

I also think the Controller needs a one-button sleep option, as the
regular remote has.

Believe it or not (I don't believe it sometimes myself!), broadcasters
are actually mandated NOT to increase volume for commercials. It's
actually against the law!

So instead they compress the audio of commercials to the maximum extent
possible - which is exactly what a lot of Internet radio streams do.

Does anyone have one of these TVs with the feature activated? Does it
reduce the volume of commercials?

Re: [slim] SN finds SB2, SC doesn't

2008-12-02 Thread rocket j squirrel

Oh, okay - so "connected to SN" is what the player reports on the
display.

I presently have two choices under Setup Squeezebox (4 of 4): "Connect
to Squeezenetwork" or "Connect to [server name] (IP Address)". The
server name (my computer's name) and the IP address for it are
correctly entered.

After selecting "Connect to [server name] (IP Address)", SC finds the
player. So all that stuff seems to be working.

However, my Favorites (streaming radio stations), which SN knows about,
are missing in SC and in the player. Do I have to do something to import
the favorites list into SC?

Agreed - and when you put it that way I can see it would be difficult
to achieve.

I guess I was thinking of something along the lines of the way that
many newer model TV's have a feature to volume-level. I don't really
know how this is technically achieved. It's possible that it's more
'volume-limiting' than volume-levelling.

It seems to be an increasingly common practice for commercials, for
example, to come on at significantly higher volume than the shows they
interrupt.

Unless you could have the player somehow 'sample' the stream for a
period then adjust the volume based on the 'peak' volume, the only
alternative seems to be for the user to apply a gain manually for each
source/station based on trial/error. The former approach (sampling)
would unfortunately still result in a source starting off at a
different volume - at least for a brief period. I'm not sure how long
you would need to sample to achieve this - in my experience you know as
soon as the stream starts that it's louder than what you were previously
listening to.

Thinking further on that, it highlights another problem. Consider the
case where when you last listened to something it was local music,
after which you switch off the player. When you return (thinking
specifically of the Boom here) you hit a favourite button to start a
stream (without first having played another source). I'm not sure the
player would be able to compensate against what you were previously
listening to.

What I mean is - when the player is connected to SqueezeNetwork,
SqueezeCenter won't find the player because it's connected to SN.

However there's increased integration between SN and SC - I seem to
recall SC being aware that the player was connected to SN and a dialog
box asking whether you want to pull it back to SC. I may be wrong
though!

Just having SN loaded in your browser doesn't necessarily mean the
player is connected. On the right top corner of the page you'll see
which player is currently connected though.

In that case, it has connected to SC.

Some OS/browser/SC issue which appears to have resolved itself, but it
looks like the player was connected to SC all along, just that the web
GUI wasn't operating properly.

I'm back. I had to exit the SC application and re-launch it for it to

It now finds the player. Since I didn't change any settings from when I

but I'm happy with this progress anyway.

Unlike SN, though, SC can't find my favorites. It looks like I have to

Yes, MiP is much better than that. Plus, if you find that MiP is
getting redundant, you can tweak some parameters to mix it up (pun

It happens often enough that I'll pick an electronic song as a seed and
get some jazz in there. It seems strange to look at, but once the mix

Re: [slim] Playlist bug when player power is interrupted

2008-12-02 Thread MeSue

I've noticed my playlists doing this a few times recently. I start
playing and it is 1 or 2 songs back from where I left off when I
stopped listening the last time. These players weren't powered off
intentionally, but maybe there were short power outages that I slept
through or never noticed. They happen often here.

You may be on to something, though I can't help with what debug flags
to set... sorry.

Re: [slim] SN finds SB2, SC doesn't

2008-12-02 Thread rocket j squirrel

Thank you, Mark.

Disabling the server's firewall does not change the behavior, SC still
reports that the player cannot be found.

I'm not certain what you mean by trying to connect to SC "while [I'm]
on SN." I can report that SC cannot see the player whether or not my
browser has http://www.squeezenetwork.com/ open.

Going through the network setup on the player: the music source setting
specifies the correct IP address for the server. When I then hit the
right arrow, it displays "Connecting to Squeezecenter . . . " sits
there for a while, then "Now Playing" displays.

However, now when I right-click on the Squeezecenter application and
select "Open Squeezecenter," nothing happens. It used to open a new
browser window, but not now. That looks to be a different problem which
I'll try to sort out then come back to this issue.

So until then, thanks for your help on this.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2008-12-02 Thread pippin

The artwork issue is a known bug that will go away with 1.0.3
You are probably using .bmp artwork, which is not really supported by
SC, so the server doesn't scale correctly.

You will not need the plugin, however, some strings will appear better
in English or German with iPeng installed (since the app uses the
skin's translation table in cases where no suitable SC string is
available).

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2008-12-02 Thread jrfuda

I purchased/downloaded last night an played with it a bit this morning.

I'm running SC on a Thecus N5200 and have this version of SC installed
according to the status screen:

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 17793 - Linux - EN - iso-8859-1

I'm waiting for 7.3 to become a release version before updateing, to
give the N5200 prot for version past 7.0 to get all the bugs worked
out.

I've previously ran the web-based iPeng without issues, other than
slowness.

Currently I'm having some artwork issues. On pages that list
artists/albums with the cover art to the left, the cover art is
displayed at all sorts of sizes, often blocking out the text of the
album/artist. Given the various sizes displayed, it appears to be
displayed as either the native resolution of the artwork or some
fraction of it. I have my artwork stored both in the mp3 (all my music
is mp3) and in the album's directory. Anyone else seeing this?

Another question I have, is does this iPhone App still require the SC
plugin to be installed or will it work on its own? If it does still
require the plugin, will updating to the latest version fix my problem.
I beleive I have the original iPeng plugin version... the one released
when iPeng went from being just html code/skin to being a plugin.

Thanks!

The only way this is (sort of) achievable is with ReplayGain, and the
RG algorithm must scan the whole file in advance to determine its
average volume before computing gain data.

Radio stations would likely never embed RG data in their streams and
even if they did, it would have to change for every track. I can't see
that happening on a permanent and consistent basis for all streams.

So a solution would have to come player-side/server-side. Andy - a
quick and crude way would be to just cut volume by a set amount when
switching to an Internet stream. This should be fairly easy but is it
considered too crude? Personally I believe a drop of 30% on the volume
scale when switching to Internet radio would work well.

It seems (from my point of view of course ;-)) that it would be easier

Re: [slim] Suggestion: Volume for Internet Radio

2008-12-02 Thread andyg

A lot of radio stations apply various DSP effects and gain to their
stream, that's why they are louder. I am not sure how automatic
leveling would work, but one suggestion is a manually assigned gain
value you could set on a per-station basis. Perhaps for popular
stations we could provide some sort of preset gain value. Record the
station for an hour or so, and see what a good gain value would be.
Perhaps if you guys were to start a listing of recommended gain values
for stations on the wiki, we could build on that.

You can see this with visualizer screens on players that support this.
With a spectrum analyzer, for instance, many Internet radio streams max

Re: [slim] customer support?

2008-12-02 Thread DeVerm

Adding a receiver here, I actually got the player PIN displayed on the
controller and went on to SN to add the player. While entering it and
it's name I notice that it's already in the list automagically. I never
got the message that this was done etc. so it can get very confusing for
a new user who isn't a geek like most of us are incl. me ;-) I
remember I was confused the first time (older software) as you end up
on SN wanting to add the player but don't know the PIN and when you
finally find it, you don't need it anymore because the player is added
automatically. Better to remove that whole "Add Player" section when
one never can use it!

A support response that claims the requests were lost while at the same
time listing them in a response doesn't help either because they
obviously weren't lost when a support member can quote them in the
response.

One-liner support requests that include terms like "crap" don't help
either.

cheers,
Nick.

Ah.. OK.
LUA is a scripting language that the controller uses to implement -
well, actually everything. You can write plugins in LUA.
Apple does not allow 3rd party scripting languages on iPhone (OK, it
DOES allow the language, it just doesn't allow to download code to it,
but that would be what it does here) so that will never go into iPeng.
I'm also not completely sure the plugins would be compatible with the
different UI on iPhone.

"NowPlaying centric": The iPeng skin (other than SqueezeCenter and the
SBC) has an interface for plugins on the NowPlaying screen. This can be
used to get player or playback specific information not through the menu
structure but directly on that screen. It's being used, for example, to
show AlbumInfo, Biography or Lyrics information on the NowPlaying
screen.
iPeng will get that, too, but it will take a while.

I totally agree too. You are never going to be able to implement every
feature/plugin that everyone wants. You could have a settings page a
mile long with options for everything.

It sounds like you have a good balance between features, speed, giving

Re: [slim] Trouble with MusicIP Headless, SC7.3, and Sugarcube

2008-12-02 Thread wreford

Michael -the folder is on the NAS drive, and MiP is running as a service
(ie. in headless mode).

However, in the meantime, I have solved my problem and got it to work -
not sure if this helps you, kook, but here is my solution.

My music is stored on an external ReadyNAS raid drive in a folder
called FLAC FIles, which, in terms of UNC path, is at
\\Nas-01-13-59\media\Music\FLAC Files

However, for ease of access, I mapped the path in Windows to G:\

When adding music to library in MiP I had simply navigated to the FLAC
Files folder using the mapped G:\ drive.

Since SC would not recognise the G:\ drive, I had to use the UNC path
in the music folder.

This created a mis-match in the path names, hence the problem.

To solve it, I deleted the MiP cache, then re-added music to the MiP
library using the UNC path (navigating there through "My Network
Place/Microsoft Windows Network, etc.), and then re-rcanned/validated
the whole collection.

Having done that, I then made sure that I left the UNC path in the SC
music folder, set the MiP Plugin to only check for mixable tracks,
cleared the SC cache and re-scanned and, hey presto, the two paths
matched and MiP worked in SC (the little M logos appearing and playing
fine).

2008-12-02 Thread pippin

Puh, that'S a lot of questions out here. On Features, see the comments
at the end of the post.

All 200? I'll see...

Well, as long as they sell a few more transporters this way, they might
not care too much...

Yes :-). Fixed in 1.0.3

That's actually a SqueezeCenter issue. So it will take at least until
7.3.1 and another iPeng update to fix this

My philosophy (stated!) is to be as close to the iPhone UI. Which
means: don't have too many pickers and things where it can be avoided.

That's not really a large library. Have you restarted iPeng? (NOT
re-INSTALLING, just quit and restart after the import).

Other votes on this? It's not a big thing to do, just another view
controller to fill up the UI...

OK...

Hopefully, since this is unlikely to change soon :-)

Regarding features/functions (I didn't answer in detail above):
- iPeng in the future will support all plugins that are supported on
the Controller and do NOT requite LUA (which would violate Apple's T&C)
plus likely some others, most notably it will also have the "NowPlaying
centric" plugin feature of the skin. That's with a 1.1 release, I don't
yet have a due date for that
- Short term, I do have an 1.0.3 update that we are currently trying to
get out to Apple (having some trouble with the Code Signing on the 2.2
SDK - we are obviously not alone on this, Apple's dev forum is full of
it). This Upgrade will focus on the bugs reported so far (Artwork
rescaling, wrong sort orders, some crash scenarios) plus:
- Performance improvement for large libraries (sorting in
background thread)
- Browse Music Folder
- experimental WOL (you have to add the MAC manually)

Regarding requests to show additional information in the existing
menus. I will check this, but this is always about balancing different
aspects: How cluttered do I want my UI? How fast do I want the app to
be?
Especially importing additional artists can have a huge impact on
performance so I don't promise anything here, my current favorite is to
offer a "details" page that would show all this.
Playing Times and years may be less of an issue (years are not), ao
I'll check for that.

[slim] How to save my Favourites

2008-12-02 Thread norderney

How do I save my Favourites, so that if I need to do a clean install of
SqueezeCentre by uninstalling SC and then reinstalling it I do not
loose my Favourites?

Is there anything else I need to save/backup?
