Re: [Elecraft] K3 No Transmit When WAV File Is Played
Hi Bud, I'll assume that you have a cable from PC audio out to the K3 Line In. Are you using VOX or are you sending a serial signal from your PC to K3 to transmit. If VOX be sure VOX is on. Make sure MENU:MIC+LIN is ON Go into the MENU:MIC SEL and chose LINE IN. Put the K3 into test mode or run it into a dummy load. Put the K3 into transmit manually with the XMIT button. Adjust the MIC knob for proper ALC levels on the K3. (You may also have to adjust the line out level on your PC). After you have completed the level adjustment remember to turn the MENU:MIC SEL back to your normal microphone input (front or rear). 73, Mike K2MK Bud Governale, W3LL wrote When I hit a function key in N1MM the correct wav file plays as heard thru the computer speakers. [Elecraft] P3 time required to stabilize after transmit
With the recent talk about adding transmit monitoring to the P3 maybe there will also be some firmware improvement on the transition time from transmit back to receive. The P3 sometimes defies logic as it randomly can take seconds to return to normal receiver monitoring after transmit. It does it in both fixed-tune mode and tracking mode. It is infrequent and totally random. 73, Mike K2MK -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-time-required-to-stabilize-after-transmit-tp7595748.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] DX Spotting Systems
Hi Ted, I believe they are all free. Try them all. My personal favorite is VE7CC. It's filtered data can be fed to contest logging software. And of course it can send alerts by text or e-mail. With version 3 (still free) you can have multiple profiles for different kinds of contests or operating styles. It is so good that you will want to add a 2nd monitor to your PC for it's sole use. 73, Mike K2MK Dauer, Edward wrote I have resisted using spotting systems until now, preferring to hunt on my own. Somehow, being primordial seemed more authentic. But as the totals rise and the easy ones are in the bag, the listening time per new entity has gone up sharply. Hi Hugh, If he's using AFSK from a PC there's a few things he'll want to verify. The K3 should be set to digital mode AFSK A? The audio output from his PC should be attached to the K3 line input. Re: [Elecraft] K3+KPA500+Steppir or K3+Expert KFA+ Steppir ?
Hi Anton, I have a K3, KPA500 and two SteppIRs (two controllers). The SteppIRs follow the K3 precisely. It's totally transparent. Just remember to use protection so that you don't accidentally transmit high power when the antenna is tuning. Damage to the SteppIR EHU can result. Use the KPA500 aux cable keying interrupt from Elecraft and either get the tuning relay option for the SteppIR SDA 100 controller or purchase the N8LP tuning relay. Before the other posts start to fly, yes you can go without protection but the operative word here is accidentally. Sh1t happens especially when you add a computer into the mix. Do you want to risk damaging the expensive SteppIR EHU or do you want to spend some money for protection. 73, Mike K2MK Elecraft mailing list wrote GM/GA/GE, The K3 question in connection with Steppir yagi(s). Or even manually tune the Steppir controller ? I am thinking of swapping my Icom for K3, but I had bitter experience with a FT-2000D and Steppir and Expert amp combination when Steppir would not automatically follow the tuning dial on the FT2000D - but only when RF power was applied I understand that K3 can change, depending on the bands, drive power to equally drive the KPA500 so the same output power will be on all bands ? Hi Tex, Almost. One leg of the Y cable is very short so you'll need a serial extension cable. There's a good drawing from SteppIR that shows how the Y cable connects to the multiple devices. Not specifically the K3 but any transceiver. E-mail me directly if you need a copy. k2mk at comcast dot net Change the K3 config setting: CONFIG:AUTOINF to Auto 1 Of course you'll need the transceiver tracking option on the SteppIR controller and on the SteppIR transceiver setup screen set: MODE = KENW Din should match your current K3 and PC baud rate. Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA external monitor freezes - RFI?
Hi Mike, I think multiple ferrites will help but you might be surprised to find that it works best when applied to a cable you haven't yet tried. Take off all of the clamp-ons and get things set up to reliably cause RFI. Then put 4 or 5 clamp-ons on one cable at a time. Try this on every cable in and out of your equipment. Such as the DC cable from your power supply to the K3. Then move onto the various PC cables. One of those cables is bound to show a reduction in RFI. When that happens just keep loading on the ferrites. For serious RFI one or two ferrites on a cable is never enough. 73, Mike K2MK mike wrote When using KPA500 my external monitor (and the P3 display) often freezes, sometimes up to 5 seconds, after I transmit. With the external display disabled, the P3 does not freeze (and incidentally it refreshes much faster without the ext monitor enabled.) I also notice a slight flickering of the monitor screen while transmitting. I take this to be a RFI problem. I have added four snap on ferrite beads on each end of the VGA cable. The monitor is as far away from the amp and feedlines as I can get it and all equipment K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500 are bonded to a ground bus. This is not unique to this monitor as it happened with a different smaller monitor I used before. [Elecraft] KPA500 heavy RTTY observation
I had the opportunity last week to run some pretty heavy RTTY operation on my KPA500 during the W1AW/2 operation. Generally I used my tube amp but I wanted to see how the KPA500 would perform. Normally I run 600 watts out of the KPA500 but for this operation I cranked it down to 500 watts. We're talking continuous CQs and contacts over 2 hours of straight through operation. The KPA500 worked flawlessly. Having said that it is important to mention something about temperature and fan speed. It didn't take long for the temperature to get up to 65C. I eventually set the idle fan speed at speed 4 which tended to keep it at 65C or below. For me, speed 4 sounds about the same as the fan on my legal limit amp. The surprise occurs when the temperature creeps up to 70C. The fan jumps to speed 5 (or maybe 6) and it is loud. Luckily it only takes 5 to 10 seconds to bring it down from 70C to 65C. It looks like Elecraft did a fine job controlling temperature for heavy RTTY operation. I would not hesitate to recommend the KPA500 for RTTY contesting but I would certainly want to mention that the occassional higher fan speeds might annoy some operators. 73, Mike K2MK -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-heavy-RTTY-observation-tp7592076.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Two more SVGA questions
Hi Fred, Question 1 is easy because you already guessed the answer. Question 2, not so easy. The available display resolutions for the P3 SVGA adapter can be seen in the SVGA manual. On a general note, a modern LCD monitor will be able to serve double (or triple) duty because they all seem to come with multiple inputs these days. If your PC has 2 or more video outputs you can set up the secondary monitor to run on its DVI or HDMI input from your PC. Then you can push a button (or toggle a menu function) on the secondary monitor to either display the P3 SVGA input or the DVI or HDMI input from the PC. That's what many of us do. But you would not use it for N1MM or some other critical application as you would need that full time on your primary monitor. You might put your VE7CC cluster program on the monitor shared with the P3. 73, Mike K2MK k6dgw wrote 1. Is the monitor dedicated only to the SVGA adapter, or can I partition it and put one or more N1MM windows on it too? Re: [Elecraft] N8LP Tuning Relay w/ K3/KPA500 - help, please
Hi Cary, Be careful. Until you get this figured out you can damage your antenna by pumping high power into it during tuning. I suggest that you switch to a dummy load while you are experimenting. You said you have the phono cable running from the relay to the PTT In connector on the K3. *This is NOT correct.* You want to run the cable from the KEY OUT connector on the K3 to the N8LP relay. Next you will have to use the key interruptor on the 15 pin cable as others have advised. Finally the KPA500 will not go into Standby. It will stay in Operate but it will just sit there. But last year the charger died and the cattle just shredded the wire to get into my grassy meadow. So now I have all this aluminum wire that I would hate to throw away. So I'm thinking of making a really good ground plane and putting up a vertical of some kind. I have enough scrap tubing to make about 38' or so. Re: [Elecraft] Configuring a K3 for the PR6-10
Hi Ted, If you are using a KPA500 and a PR6 you will have to remove pin 11 from the cable that goes to the KPA500. It has popped up on this reflector once or twice but it is not mentioned in either the PR6 or the KPA500 instructions. If you wonder if this will work just pull the 15 pin cable off of the KPA500 and you'll see that the PR6 works as you would expect it to work. 73, Mike K2MK Dauer, Edward wrote I need to ask for help configuring a PR6-10 on the K3. Installed OK, removed the internal jumper per instructions and am using the control line on a Y splitter to allow the KPA and KAT to connect to the K3 as well. Physically, all seems fine, and the K3, P3, KPA and KAT work just as they always did. Then to operate the pre-amp I configured digout1 to ³on² for 28 Mhz on the K3, per instructions. OK so far. The PR6-10 manual says ³Tap RX ANT to enable preamplifier.² When I do so the noise level goes way down and the signals disappear, as if there were no antenna connected to the receiver. Removing the power plug from the preamp made no difference in either mode RX ANT on or off. I recall when building the K3 that there were elections to be made about antenna configurations when installing the sub receiver and/or the KXV3. I also remember that there are a myriad of ways the antennas can be routed via the configuration menus. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 assembly
Hi Sal, The KPA500 is a pretty easy kit but you have to take time to carefully inventory the screws. Here's a tip. Look at figure 40 on page 28 of the assembly manual. I suspect it would be easier to bend the gray wire prior to mounting the connector in the chassis. Access is tight in its final position. I'm surprised they haven't put a notch in the sheet metal to eliminate the need for this alteration. 73, Mike K2MK W2RMS wrote Hi everyone! Finally assembled the KAT500 last night. I never thought i would have this much difficulty with the tuner as opposed to K3/P3. Those SO-239 lugs are tricky! Especially the XMTR one. I actually ended up using a black screw instead of the zinc one 'cause it just wouldn't fit. Hoping that KPA500 goes together easier. And the W2 meter, that i ordered as a kit, came in assembled :-( I had to take it apart (not fully) and examine what's inside. For me assembling these products is about 3/4 of the fun! I like using them too, but putting them together is something i wait for and savor it :-) I'm a geek, i guess... __ Slava (Sal) B, W2RMS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-assembly-photo-log-tp7589986p7589993.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KPA500 Aux Cable Pin 11 Problem with Preamp
I had a problem that I remembered reading about on the reflector when I hooked up my new KPA500 to my K3 with PR6/10 preamp using the Elecraft Aux cable and the companion Y cable. I searched the archive and discovered that users found it necessary to remove pin 11 from the cable to the KPA500. The problem I experienced was that the preamp was powered up on all bands not just 6/10/12 meters. I only noticed it when I tried to use my separate receive antenna on 80 and 40 meters. Since the preamp was powered up the RX ANT bypass in the preamp did not function so the K3 never saw my receive only antenna. Removing pin 11 from the Aux cable to the KPA500 solved the problem. I'm surprised there is no mention of this problem and its solution in the KPA500 manual. I think an alert should be added. 73, Mike K2MK -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-Aux-Cable-Pin-11-Problem-with-Preamp-tp7588821.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Beta software Bug?
Hi Alan, I think you should go a bit deeper and read the data sub mode and the DSP bandwidth and have the transmit cursor agree more closely to how the operator is listening to signals. When I'm operating split in RTTY the last thing I want to see is a 2.7KHz wide red cursor cluttering up the screen. If you can't do this then there could be a menu option to adjust the red cursor width. 73, Mike K2MK Alan Bloom wrote One change in the beta firmware is to make the width of the transmit cursor in Data A mode equal to 2.7 kHz. The reason is that in Data A mode there is no way for the firmware to know what the actual bandwidth is - it can be whatever is coming out the PC's sound card. So rather than assume narrow-FSK as in the old firmware, the new firmware makes the cursor width equal to the SSB bandwidth. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - second receiver for split ?
Hi Jim, We see a lot of similar questions on the reflector. Self experimentation is probably the best method for you to fully understand the use of the P3 with respect to VFO B and split operation. Just remember the three cursor colors. VFO-A is green. VFO-B is magenta. When you are transmitting on a frequency other than VFO-A a red cursor appears. It will show up when you are in split (SPLT) or if XIT is turned on. There are additional identifiers on the K3 screen. the TX arrow points to B. The delta f LED under the power button is illuminated. Sometimes the red and magenta cursors overlap and you only see red. If you change the bandwidth of the SUB RX the cursors will vary in width and you'll see both. If the span of the P3 is quite wide the cursors are very narrow and you might not see these finer distinctions. If your span is narrow the red and magenta cursors might be off the P3 screen as denoted by a small arrow on the right or left side of the screen. Experiment and have fun. 73, Mike K2MK hf4me wrote I had just noticed those lines but didn't think they were necessarily the transmit freq as I was in CW and the line wasn't at 600 as I would have expected. Re: [Elecraft] K3: reduced PWR in Data Mode on 10m only
Hi Bob, Turning the power knob and reading the power in the lower display is not really an indication that the K3 is putting out that same amount of power. You would need to set the K3 meter to display power output. (Hold the DISP button until the RF bar appears below the S units). I suspect the meter will agree with the W2 and that you are not putting out any power. Is it possible that your digital software is not activating the VOX or PTT. If VOX is the issue it might be a simple matter of increasing the VOX GN menu setting. 73, Mike K2MK Bob KD7YZ wrote If I use CW then I get whatever the rig will put out, on 10m. The VSWR shows about 1.3:1 When I switch to Digital then I get about 6w out from 0 to 11w, as indicated when I turn the PWR knob. When I turn the PWR knob higher then though it indicates from 11 to 100, the output, as seen on the Elecraft W2, is circa 0 to 1 watt. Until I go to CW, as I said, then the output is correct, the K3 dial shows the correct number of bars and so forth. All other bands work fine on Tx-Data mode. The antenna is not the problem. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA Option - Split Screen?
Hi Ted, I don't have split screen but I do have my external monitor running dual purposes. Most LCD monitors have double or triple inputs these days. And many PCs have 2 or more video outputs. You hook up the P3 SVGA card to the VGA input of the monitor and you hook up the DVI monitor input to the DVI output from your PC. (Your primary PC monitor would run off of the VGA output of your PC). My monitor has a button on the front that allows it to be quickly switched between the VGA (P3) and the DVI (PC) inputs. You would want to avoid a monitor that does not have a dedicated button. And while I am an electrical engineer I think I explained this in layman terms. 73, Mike K2MK Dauer, Edward wrote I am thinking of adding the SVGA option to my K3-P3. Re: [Elecraft] Sub RX and P3
Hi Andy, First it's easier to see what's going on if you turn off the A and B markers. You just want to see the cursors to get a better handle on how they operate. And you want to activate the VFO-B cursor in the P3 menu. VFO-A has a green cursor. VFO-B has a Magenta cursor. There is no separate cursor for the SUB RX. It is just the VFO-B cursor. If you choose SPLIT there is an additional cursor in Red. The Red cursor denotes your transmit frequency when it differs from VFO-A. You'll also see the Red cursor if you choose XIT. The Red cursor may be the same width as the magenta cursor so it might be invisible when operating SPLIT. If you fiddle with the bandwidth knob after pushing BSET you'll be able see the difference between the Red and Magenta Cursors. 73, Mike K2MK G4HUE wrote Just got the Sub RX and I must say it looks tasty. However, I am puzzled by the display on the P3 (another tasty toy I would not be without). The sub RX shows up in magenta (I seem to recall KE7X calls it cyan but trust me its magenta) on the P3 but when, and only when, I put the K3 into SPLIT mode the magenta bar on the P3 (which shows what the Sub RX is doing) has a central highlighted portion which is really bright. When I move out of SPLIT its a standard magenta. Re: [Elecraft] P3 marker B transmit freq.
Hi Gary, I understand your need and as others have indicated it's not really how most folks use markers. My findings have been that the markers are not optimum for split DX chasing. When DX is operating split I immediately hold the SPLIT button and turn on the SUB RX and then spin the VFO B knob on the K3 while observing the magenta and red (split) cursors on the P3. With the SUB RX turned on I can hear all of the callers as I'm turning the VFO B dial and I am able to more finely drop my signal in then by just visualizing its placement with the P3 alone. This also does away with the necessity of pushing the P3 knob. I have found this to be quicker, more accurate, and more intuitive then using markers. 73, Mike K2MK Gary Smith-2 wrote Reading the P3 screen I see a station transmitting. I use Marker A (Green) to pin me on that desired station as soon as I tap the knob to QSY me to a desired signal. Problem is that if I don't then reach over and manually hold the split button on the K3 itself to have the K3 transmit on the DX listening frequency, I'll still keep transmitting on the DX transmit frequency because the K3 will not have gone split; its as if the procedure is halted half way and it shouldn't function this way, its not intuitive. Re: [Elecraft] Low audio K3?
Hi John, I purchased the Heil Proset (sold by Elecraft) when I bought my K3 several years ago. The audio level was inadequate for my deteriorating ears. I then purchased the Yamaha CM500 headset and quickly sold the Proset on eBay. I've never looked back. There is a substantial increase in audio level with the CM500. Plus you can buy two CM500s (with change to spare) for the price of one Proset. 73, Mike K2MK JBaumgarte wrote I have 2 K3's which I use in a contest station I have, use for remoting that station (35 miles from home), or the occasional mobile state qso party. I typically use Heil headsets, but picked up a Yamaha after hearing K9YC speak so glowingly about the unit. I have always noticed the low level audio, but the remote sight is so naturally quiet, that it hasn't been a big problem. Typically, in cw mode, both gains are almost wide open. But not so bad in SSB, which led me to believe it was something in the set up. I have played with this some, but not a lot of improvement. The Yamaha is much less of a problem. Last weekend I did a mobile in the Wisconsin QSO party using one of the rigs, and it was somewhat of a nightmare! I ran both gains wide open 100% of the time, and still had lots of problems hearing weaker stations. I made over 700 q's (all CW) in the 7 hour contest but it was a struggle. I was in a new Subaru Outback which is very quiet, but there is still considerable wind and road noise to deal with. I was kicking myself for not bringing the Yamaha along. Interestingly, another competitive station in the contest was using a K3 and reports the same problem. He was also using a Heil. I fully realize my best and least expensive, option might be to sell both Heils and buy another Yamaha or two, but I know that most of the stations in my contest club (Minnesota Wireless Assn) are using Heils and can't believe that there isn't something I'm missing here. Re: [Elecraft] P3 tracking K3 VFO A?
Hi Gary, It sounds like you're happy with just tuning with the VFO-A dial. Why bother with the marker at all. Use of markers is really not all that convenient. You can also use VFO-B as a pseudo marker. Pushing the K3 A/B button will jump you to the VFO-B frequency. And VFO-B can be made to track VFO-A. 73, Mike K2MK Gary Smith-2 wrote Is there a way to have the marker track VFO A? Along the same path, is there a way to have the marker stay on VFO A and scroll as I adjust the K3? It would be helpful to have see what is going on in the spectrum with the P3 panadapter and move the VFO rather than only be able to use the knob to move the marker to go to a particular signal on the waterfall, and then push the knob on the P3 to move the K3s VFO to that frequency. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna question
Hi George, I'm not 100% sure but I don't think your SUB RX has to be ON to be damaged. I believe that just connecting an antenna to the AUX RF input will allow RF into the SUB RX. There is an internal protective device on the input to the SUB RX called a carrier operated relay (COR). You can see it in the manual in some of the block diagrams. When you get your vertical you can try transmitting with the yagi at low power and gradually increase your power. If you hear a clicking sound you are tripping the COR. That's your positive indication that you should either decrease power or add external protection. There are devices available to put in your SUB RX antenna line for overload protection but you can also use the KEY OUT signal to energize a relay to disconnect your SUB RX antenna. There is also a lower current KEY OUT signal on pin 10 of the accessory connector. You can use that to trip a low current device that in turn activates a relay. 73, Mike K2MK George A. Thornton-2 wrote This might be a stupid question, but here goes. I have a small lot. I currently am using a 3 element Yagi that barely fits on the property. [Elecraft] K3 Text Decode Firmware Request
I have a P3 with SVGA board and there's sufficient room to display decoded text all of the time on the external monitor. I normally have decoding turned on when operating RTTY and CW even though I can view them with my PC software as well. [Elecraft] Crystal Filter Offset in 4.81, What does it mean?
I installed the 4.81 beta firmware and I am able to change the crystal filter offset as described in the firmware notes. I can hear slight differences in a CW signal between 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 KHz. Hi Gary, You didn't indicate if you are running split or diversity. Here's a solution if you are in diversity. There are times that you would like the RX ANT to be steered to both your MAIN RX and SUB RX. I do that with a splitter on my RX antenna cable. One leg goes to the AUX RF BNC socket for the SUB RX and the other leg goes to the RX ANT IN BNC socket on the KXV3A board. Re: [Elecraft] Shipping a K3
Hi Gary, Shipping anything large has gotten to be expensive. Since you used the term first class mail I can tell you haven't shipped a large package for quite a few decades. Simply put, if you have the dimensions of your box, the weight, and the insured value the easiest way to determine shipping cost is to go to the UPS and USPS web sites and enter the data. You'll want to choose Ground for UPS and Priority Mail for USPS. The Post Office will pick it up at your house for no extra charge. UPS will charge for pickup but you can drop it at any of the many UPS shipping stores for free. Or you can hand it to a UPS driver when he is making a delivery also free. You can do the package labeling yourself directly off of your printer. You just have to register a few details and use your credit card. Or you can take the package to the Post Office or UPS store. The price is a little higher if you take it to the Post Office but it is the same if you take it to the UPS store. If you live in my town it will take 45 minutes at the Post Office or 1 minute at the UPS store. 73, Mike K2MK Gary Smith-2 wrote I'm going to be shipping my K3. Re: [Elecraft] PR6-10 Receiver Pre Amplifier
Ray Stephen, And of course you will need the KXV3 or KXV3A board in your K3. Further, when you press the RX ANT button for 6, 10, and 12 meters it will be remembered so that you don't have to push it each time you use those bands. And lastly, the preamp is activated by a single wire connection to the accessory socket so that it activated for only those bands where it is used. When de-activated the preamp has a pass through connection for a separate receive antenna to be used for the lower frequency bands. The mechanical and electrical design of the preamp is very well thought out. If you are already using your accessory socket you'll need a DB15 Y cable which is available from Elecraft for a reasonable price. Re: [Elecraft] APF
I agree with Bill. There's no need to fiddle with the RIT control. I think Dusty's original suggestion implies that he found the APF to be more effective at a slightly lower frequency (20Hz lower) than his nominal CW pitch setting. This may be true but it can be more easily accomplished by tuning the signal a bit lower in frequency with the main VFO. Then just tweak the APF center frequency with the SHIFT knob. Dusty's suggestion may appeal to some because it doesn't shift your transmit frequency 20Hz off of zero beat. In the grand scheme, however, 20Hz off of zero beat is hardly noticeable. The important thing here is to play with the APF and learn how to use it. You don't have to wait for weak signals. You can experiment with medium strength signals. Then once you get the hang of it you'll be good to go when trying to pull out a weak one. But don't expect the APF to pull them all in. The APF has its limitations. 73, Mike K2MK Bill W4ZV wrote IMHO K3WC's APF suggestion is WAY TOO COMPLICATED. I use APF virtually all the time and never use RIT, SHIFT, etc. Just HOLD DUAL PB to actuate APF and use the VFO to zero beat. COARSE (10 Hz) VFO steps is usually close enough but you can switch to FINE (1 Hz) if necessary for ultra weak signals. I also strongly endorse N6KR's suggestion below: I suggest setting the passband width to about 250-300 Hz when using APF. This is extremely important since bandwidths too narrow will introduce additional ringing to the APF which already borders on ringing. I actually use a 200 Hz XFIL but set to actuate at DSP 400 Hz. With WIDTH set to 400 Hz, the signal first goes through the relatively broad (4.0 shape factor) 200 Hz XFIL, then a 400 Hz DSP and finally the narrow APF. This makes the cascaded XFIL/DSP look more like 250 Hz, reduces ringing, still allows you to hear off-frequency callers (although attenuated) and helps your ears discriminate weak signals from noise by providing a wider background sample of noise. 73, Bill W4ZV Scott Monks wrote Sam; Your explanation is really good Sam, but it seems that something doesn't follow for me. cut... Turn on the RIT control (tap the RIT button). Next, lower the RIT frequency -20 Hz. (You must have CONFIG:PB CTRL in the config menu set to .01 to move in 10 Hz steps). If your pitch is set to 500 Hz, then the tone of the CW should now be 480 Hz. Next, turn on the APF by HOLDING the DUAL PB button. Adjust the APF using the SHIFT Fc Knob (now APF control). Move the APF down -20 Hz to match the CW signal. Once you have the signal in the center of the new 480 Hz tone you should hear that the CW signal pops up about 5 or 6 dB Ok, I did this, first setting my pitch at 500 Hz, which actually even cut out some ringing! I got the station centered, etc., turned RIT down -20, activated APF, but then the problem began. I am not sure what the SHIFT Fc Knob is--if it is just the regular Shift-Lo knob then this doesn't do anything for me when I turn it. Is this the right knob? Do I need something turned on in CONFIG for it to work? I have had my K3 a little more than 1yr., and I sort of remember that MAYBE I could move the passband once at first, but I my be remembering bad! Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA send-receive
Hi Gary, No keyboard is required if you want to view CW/RTTY/PSK decode on the external monitor connected to the SVGA board in the P3. The P3 doesn't do any of the decoding. It just displays the same thing that the K3 displays if you have decode turned on. What it does do is display a continuous stream of decode. The area on the monitor can be enlarged to more or fewer lines of decode as desired. The feature is turned on in the SVGA card in the SVGA menu group. I use this and it works just fine. The only caveat is that occasionally the K3 starts in 75 baud RTTY which won't properly decode 45 baud RTTY. It's necessary to change this using the K3 Data Mode Button. Now if you feel the need to also send CW/RTTY/PSK from an external keyboard that can be accomplished by plugging in a USB keyboard into the SVGA board. Additional capabilities include numerous memories for canned messages and the ability to send macros from the keyboard. Detailed explanations can be found in the P3 SVGA manual. Re: [Elecraft] K3 No signals in Data Mode
Hi Ed, It's entirely possible that your filter width is not set correctly. The K3 will remember the setting from the last time you used Data Mode. Also there are several sub levels for Data Mode. For PSK you will want to hold the DATA MD button and rotate VFO-B until DATA A is displayed. Then adjust your width knob until the filter width is correct for PSK. Re: [Elecraft] P3 question
Hi Gary, The quickest way to determine if the P3 is talking to the K3 is to look at the top of the P3 display. Yes, there is an RS232 connection between the K3 and P3. The RS232 line also connects in parallel to a MicroHam router, and a SteppIR SDA100 controller through Y splitter cables. So I asked myself Are these additional breakouts preventing QSY to the marker frequency? To answer, I disconnected the MicroHam and SteppIR controller, with no difference. Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA display problem 1920x1080
Hi Don, I had read that note but it is in the current Rev D manual dated 9/30/12 which corresponded to SVGA firmware 1.10. There were two firmware revisions (1.14 and 1.16) in 2013 each of which added additional notes on 1920x1080 monitor compatibility. Plus the last thread on 1920x1080 monitors was in 2012. That suggested to me that the issue had been corrected in firmware. I just wanted to see if my experience was unique. In the meantime, 1440x900 does work correctly and it does completely fill the screen. So it is satisfactory. The only negative is that the font size (even at font size 0) ends up being too large. If Elecraft wants us to use 1440x900 on a 1920x1080 monitor they should probably include an additional font that is extra small. 73, Mike K2MK Don Wilhelm-4 wrote Mike, If you read the P3SVGA manual, it states that For faster screen updates when using fixed tune mode, we recommend setting the P3SVGA resolution to 1440 x 900 or less. Re: [Elecraft] K3: AFSK problem
To Dick and John, I have experienced the 75 baud problem that John described. I fixed it but I'm not 100% sure how I did it. This tip might also work for the AFSK-A to FSK-D problem. Here's my guess at what I did. After changing from 75 baud to 45 baud on one band I would then change bands using the band button on the K3 and make the baud rate change on the next band. If I made the 45 baud correction and changed bands from my computer by either hitting a spot or typing in a new frequency the K3 would not remember 45 baud when I returned to the previous band. As I said above, this is my guess at what I did. I don't remember things like I used to. 73, Mike K2MK JBaumgarte wrote Along the same line, when I go back to RTTY, it comes up at 75 baud, where it was last at FSK-D and 45 baud. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Splitter for Loop RX Antenna ?
Hi Duane, I'll jump in with my 2 cents. I use the DXE-RSC-2 splitter from DX Engineering for my Pixel RX loop. One leg goes to the KXV3A RX IN port for the Main RX and the other leg goes to the AUX port for the SUB RX. I think this is what the original poster was trying to accomplish. This would be in non-diversity use. The DX ENGR unit has a 3db per port loss which I'm sure is true. But we pretty much expect RX antennas to have somewhat lower gain than our transmitting antenna. Their advantage is in improved signal to noise ratio. We make adjustments for this by possibly not using the K3 attenuator or by using the K3 pre-amp. Or we use an external amplifier with the RX antenna. By taking these steps an additional loss of 3db signal + noise should not be a show stopper. 73, Mike K2MK dw-4 wrote Thanks for posting this Pete! Are you noticing any observable decrease in signal strength with vs without the hybrid splitter? If I understand correctly a power splitter with 2 outputs will give 3db insertion loss. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Subreceiver AF Gain and PR6-10 connection
Hi Edward, Here's a few things to check. Before you compare Main RX and Sub RX be sure to double tap A-B (#3 button). This insures that all the Main RX settings are transferred to the Sub RX. Things like NR, NB, and filter settings should be the same before making comparisons. Also with the SUB turned on check ATT and PRE using the BSET button to be sure they are the same as the Main RX. (I'm not sure if ATT and PRE are transferred to the SUB RX using the A-B double tap). Do you have the same filter in both RXs. Have you entered all the filter parameters correctly into the config files using the K3 Utility. The outer volume knob (Sub) can be configured to be a true volume control or a balance control using CONFIG:SUB AF. Check which you have chosen. 73, Mike K2MK Dauer, Edward wrote Just finished the K3 and have it on the air. Neat! Much to learn yet. Two questions at this point, and a request for advice from the group . . . First question: The AF gain for the subreceiver is markedly lower than that for the RF board receiver. Anyone know what I might not have configured correctly? The config AF gain setting doesn't change it - sub still much lower than main. (The sub is on the shared antenna and the RF sensitivity seems the same.) Second question: the K3-to-KPA cable takes up the same 15-pin port as the PR6-10 is supposed to use (and a second cable from KPA to KAT uses up everything else.) Any options for connecting the preamp other than doing surgery on the cable? Many tnx for any advice anyone can offer . . . Re: [Elecraft] K3 - diversity mode running split
Hi Robert, Think of diversity as removing the Sub RX from the VFO-B knob. When in diversity, the VFO-B knob is only useful in the control of split transmit frequency (if you are in Split mode). It has no affect on the Sub RX frequency. So you should be good. Turn on Split, Lock VFO-B to maintain a constant transmit frequency and rotate VFO-A (and simultaneously your diversity Sub RX) to listen to the callers. Similarly when in diversity making changes using BSET should be irrelevant. The Sub RX will follow all of the settings of the Main RX. There should be no need to double tap A-B. I say should be because I never actually tried making changes using BSET while in diversity. I also have the Pixel and am happy with it. 73, Mike K2MK Robert Fanfant-2 wrote All, Apologize if this question has been asked before. When handling pileups, I've always used the following setup and it truly works FB - run split, lock the TX frequency, and use the main VFO to listen up/down for stations. Over the weekend I installed a RX only loop antenna(Pixel Technologies RF-Pro1B), and connected it the Aux RX input. I then enabled diversity mode, linking both main and sub receiver VFO(s). The sub-receiver was setup to use the Aux RX input, and the main's RX TX used Ant#1 ( the vertical). Needless to say, I was extremely impressed with the outcome, and my ability to pull out the weak signals on the low bands. Diversity mode even helped strong signals compensate for QSB. I was so impressed, that it got me thinking if I could run a pileup utilizing diversity mode in an effort to maximize the capabilities of both antenna's. My question is, will the K3 allow me to do the following, at the same time? 1) run split 2) run in diversity mode 3) lock the TX frequency 4) use the main tuning knob to change my RX frequency 5) Automatically have the sub-receiver follow adjustments made to the main RX settings (i.e. VFO, filter, filter BW, PB, NR, NB)? In a pileup I can't see going into BSET to change individual sub receiver settings to match the changes being made to the main receiver settings. Tapping A-B twice, each time I change/adjust settings of the main receiver, might get a bit tedious. Thanks in advance, -rob N7QT -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-diversity-mode-running-split-tp7577680p7577688.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] new computer advice suggestions for using with a K3
Hi Don, It's been 5 years since I purchased a computer but the approach I followed then should still be relevant. If you buy a desktop style PC there will be a means for adding additional cards in slots. Then just buy a serial card on Amazon.com with the same bus nomenclature and you'll be rewarded with 2 or 4 real serial DB9 connectors with real numbers such as com 1, com 2, etc.. 73, Mike K2MK Goldtr8 (KD8NNU) wrote Gents, I wish to get a new computer for the shack and want to have one that is RF quiet and has real serial ports. Re: [Elecraft] Optimum Monitor for the P3 SVGA?
Hi Hank, I believe the comment you are recalling has to do with the data display at the very bottom of the external monitor. The data display (CW, RTTY, and PSK) can be turned on or off. What Dave meant is that you can obtain a taller waterfall display. If the waterfall is tall you can see signals that are several minutes old. I never measured the time duration and of course it would vary depending on how tall you make the waterfall. Needless to say it is well in excess of 10 seconds. In my opinion the SVGA option for the P3 is worth the price of admission. 73, Mike K2MK Hank Garretson wrote On Tue, Jul 23, 2013 at 2:28 PM, Dave Hachadorian lt; k6ll.dave@ gt;wrote: The higher they are, the more time history you can see. Re: [Elecraft] Optimum Monitor for the P3 SVGA?
Hi Alden, It's a good question. I would suppose that it's advisable to get a monitor with a native resolution that matches the selections indicated in the SVGA manual. I'm not sure what happens when the two disagree. I would like to hear from folks that have gone through this exercise. Per the current manual the only resolutions available are: 1024x768, 1280x1040, 1440x900, and 1920x1080. Elecraft also states in the manual that 1440x900 or less is best for Fixed Tune Mode. I prefer fixed tune mode and I have to say that the screen goes through a lot of gyrations when coming out of transmit or when I hit spots from within WriteLog. If I'm doing a lot of spot jumping I'll switch to Tracking Mode. A common feature of monitors is multiple inputs. If your PC has multiple monitor outputs then you would be able to use the new monitor as a secondary PC monitor as well as a P3 monitor. If you go this way you'll want a monitor that has front panel button for input selection as opposed to input selection through a menu. Enjoy your SVGA board. It really enhances the K3/P3 experience. 73, Mike K2MK atoyer wrote I have recently received the P3SVGA and need to procure a suitable monitor. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - audio balance and hiss
Hi Bill, I have a weak ear and use a Behringer AMP800 between my K3 and my CM500 headphones. Works great. Around $70 on Amazon. 73, Mike K2MK quote author=Bill Clarke I have a problem with a weak ear. To circumvent this, I use a Behringer mixer panel, allowing me to control the gain for each ear. The panel also allows additional audio control to tinker with. The output can go to a jack for phones, or to my Behringer speakers - the latter for room filling armchair copy. Having the flexibility of the RX Equalizer and AGC settings, the K3 can be the perfect receiver for nearly everyone. It is all in the settings. All the user has to do is invest some time in experimenting. Just for grins: On 75 meters at 9 AM today, my background noise level is below S1, no ATTenuator or PREamp in use. There is a very minimal hiss when tuned to an unused frequency. Signals really leap out at you. It doesn't get better than this.
