Again, value of a product is in the eye of the beholder. SuSE's enterprise lineup is superior to Linux Mandrake's. [expert] Question regarding rpmbuild opts.
Quick question, maybe pretty simple. Here is the scenario, I want to avoid adding --target= to the rpmbuild commandline options, how exactly can i set GCC 3.2.x to build for this arch. by default? I assume there is a config somewhere or a way at the commandline to set GCC to this. Any help is much appriciated, tia. -- Aaron M. [expert] kernel panic on cardctl eject with buslink card
Hi, Last weekend I installed the 8.2 download edition. In general I am impressed. However, I can't install on my wife's machine until the following shutdown issue is addressed: I get a kernel panic when cardmgr tries to shut down. My machine is a Sony Vaio F-340, and the card in question is a BusLink wireless network card (uses the ray_cs driver). The desktop machine which I haven't tried yet has a similar card, WebGear Aviator PRO. Both cards and both machines work fine with Mandrake 8.1, except that (for both 8.1 and 8.2) I had to manually change the essid in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts despite setting it during installation. My kernel panic looks like this: - [root@grover root]# service pcmcia stop Shutting down PCMCIA services: cardmgrUnable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address ccc6a0001 *pde = 0b0d4067 *pte = Oops: CPU: 0 EIP: 0010:[] Not tainted EFLAGS: 00010246 eax: ebx: caad3440 ecx: cb6bda00 edx: ccc6a000 esi: cb0fa800 edi: 0003 ebp: cb7b1c04 esp: cb6b1bb4 ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Process cardmgr (pid: 819, stackpage=cb7b1000) Stack: caad3440 0001 0003 c010836a 0003 cb6bda00 cb7b1c04 cb7b1c04 0003 c02bb960 caad3440 c01084ed 0003 cb7b1c04 caad3440 ccc5e000 0580 cabdf00c ccc5a0c8 c022af98 ccc5e000 0200 05d0 0580 Call Trace: [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] Code: 8a 42 01 84 c0 79 0c 89 74 24 10 5b 5e 5f e9 e8 0b 00 00 3c <0>Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler! In interrupt handler - not syncing - I get the same thing when doing just "cardctl eject." But if I take the card out manually, the drivers clean themselves up just fine. If there's anything I can do to help track this down please let me know. I'd like to see this addressed in updates or at least have a way to hack the scripts to work around it so that my wife can start using some of the new features of 8.2 on her machine. [expert] Firewall/Gateway ?
I have 49 Windows PCs (all but 2 are running Win2k and they are 98se), 16 Macs one Win2k DC and 1 MDK 8.1 web, ftp, ssh server that I manage. They are on a Win2k domain and the DC does all the DNS, the client PCs all have static IPs. They all get there gateway out from a Novell server that I have no control of. I would like to add some firewall protection to my portion of the network (did I mention all the IPs are external!) and I want to be able to block the IM clients like Yahoo, AIM by killing their ports. Could I add a linux box to be the firewall and gateway without to much knowledge of setting this stuff up under Linux. Would it work by pointing the Linux box to the current gateway and change the clients to point to it for their gateway? Thanks,__You're just jealous because the voices are talking to me!

[expert] ~user websites not working
I posted this to the newbie list but only got one reply so I thought i would try here. Hey yall, I have a clean install of LM 8.1 and I can not get my users web sites to come up. When you type the URL //domainname.edu/~user I get an error telling me I do not have permission to access it. I have done this before and the only thing I can think of is that this time during the install I chose medium instead of low on the security setting because this box is on the net all the time with a static IP running Apache, ProFTPd and SSH. The domain web site comes up fine it is just the users sites that are a problem. I have looked in the httpd config files and it has entries that look to me like it should work but what I know about configuring Apache is just enough to mess something up. Can any of you give me a hand? > I think your problem may simply be permissions on the files and> directories where the pages are stored.>> Keith Lynn> Systems Administrator> School of Computer and Information Sciences> University of South Alabama Well, in testing after I found it was not working with my personal login Ilogged in with my test account created the public_html directory, startedNetscape Composer typed this is a test and saved it as index.html in mypublic_html directory I just made. That has always been fine in the past.Does setting the security level to medium change the default permissions towhere that will not work?

Otherwise www,amndrakeforum.com has an article (somewhere) that Mandrake 8.0 works flawlessly with the Tyan board on dual-Athlons. RE: [expert] anyone get kword 1.1-2.3mdk to build?
Well I'm definitely not a programming guru - not even close. I did notice that you posted earlier on this - I'm running on memory here but I think the sample you placed with your first post included remarks about KPrinter. In your current post there are a few remarks like "no matching function call to KPrinter" (or something similar). Now I may be completely wrong, but I think KPrinter (or is it KPrint) is a relatively new development and that KDE 2.2 is the first release to include it. It may be that you need some KDE 2.2 packages (which is in alpha at the moment) in order to compile KOffice apps. So I guess the starting point might be - are you using KDE 2.2? RE: [expert] 2 X-terminals from a single machine.
I've tried this, but failed. Apparently for this to wrok you need ot install two versions of X, one patched so that it accpets input from USB k/board only. There is a link to a How-to type document on the mandrake forum somewhere. It is quite a bit of work to get going, and there's no guarantee that it will work with your particular hardware setup. In the end I gave up on the idea and converted an old P133 box into a dedicate X-terminal. It will provide the same solution, but will be a lot easier to set up. I'll try and find that How-to URL for you. RE: [expert] KDE and Qt apps refused access to X server
I'll have a look at echo $DISPLAY when I get back home. In the meantime I've got a workaround, placing a script in ./kde/Autostart that basically does #!/bin/bash xhost + This allows all apps to work properly, but is really just addressing the symptoms and not the cause of the problem. Thanks for the pointer. [expert] KDE and Qt apps refused access to X server
I'm running Mandrake 7.2, and have just tried upgrading XFree to 4.0.3 and KDE to 2.1.1. The packages I used for the upgrade come from APCmags Advanced Linux Pocketbook (any Australians or New Zealanders on the list may have seen this about). I don't doubt the legitimacy of the packages - APCmag tend to be quite good, especially with their Pocketbook series. With the exception of some dependency problems (libfreetype.so.6 and libmng.so), which were quickly sorted out using rpmfind.net, the upgrade (rpm -Uvh etc) seemed to go quite smoothly. I was able to log into KDE 2.1.1 quite nicely and played around with the Control Centre, konqueror etc. All running smoothly - "well done" - I thought. But no sooner had I patted myself on the back when some problems arose. While konqueror will display pdf and Postscript fine by embedding kghostview, when I tried viewing files using kghostscript by itself (rather than embedded in konq) it would not fire up. I tried launching kghostview inside a terminal and the programme stated that the X server refused the connection, before seg faulting. I did a telinit 3, and did a startx - I still experienced the problem, and could see from the console that X was indeed refusing connections. On trying other programmes it appears that a large number of Qt (e.g. qtcups) and KDE apps, but not all, are being refused access to the X-server. This occurs whether I run the apps as a user or as root. Interestingly, if I su in a terminal the applications can be launched. Non-qt and kde apps don't seem to be affected (netscape works fine, gv etc). Can anyone out there give me some tips on where to start looking for the cause of the problem? TIA Aaron
RE: [expert] CUPS again ...
It might be possible that the pages continuing to print are those that have already been sent to the printer. A home inkjet (Epson 660) seems to hold about half a page in its own internal memory - so if I cancel a job after it has started printing, it usually has about another half page to print before it stops. If you are printing to a laser printer, it might hold a great deal more in its own RAM therefore the printer might keep printing for a while after you cancel the print job. You may need to cancel the job at the printer as well if this is the case. Hope this helps Aaron
RE: [expert] Anyone running 8.0 and play heretic2?
I can't say I've tried Heretic 2 so I don't know how applicable this advice is. Under Mandrake 7.2 I couldn't get sound working for Quake III - same reason No available audio device. Instead of killing artsd I disabled it from the Control Panel, then logged in again. I had no sound problems wth Quake, or a couple of other non-artsd aware applications. The other possible solution might come from the artsd FAQ's, which if i remember rightly can be accessed from www.kde.org. Apparently there is a command line parameter that makes artsd release the /dev/dsp. Have a look there - the problem might be solved by adjusting the way the games are launched. Like I said, I've had similar problems with games to you - but I had them under 7.2. Hopefully they are easily solved under 8.0 as well. Re: [expert] 2.2.19 kernel with Mandrake 8.0?
I'm not really trying to back out of the 2.4 kernel. If I have to, I will simply reinstall Mandrake 8.0. If nothing else, I'll go back to 7.2. What I want to know is, is there an option to select the 2.2.19 kernel on Mandrake 8.0, and if so, how do I go about installing it? [expert] 2.2.19 kernel with Mandrake 8.0?
I finally installed Mandrake 8.0 last night. I intended to install the 2.2.19 kernel with it because I have a legacy application that the 2.4 kernel is incompatible with. Unfortunately, I never saw a dialog box asking me which kernel I wanted to install. I did choose expert install, but I didn't see any place where I could specify what kernel to use. Did I just miss it? How do you select the 2.2.19 kernel with Mandrake 8.0? Right now I have a nice-looking box that I really can't use because my primary application, a VPN client, won't work with it. Thanks, Aaron -- Aaron J. RE: [expert] Serial port/mouse problems - need debugging suggestions (solved)
Thanks for the various suggestions. I have finally managed to solve the problem. As usual when something sounds like a hardware problem - it probably is a hardware problem. Whether the problem was dodgy serial ports on the motherboard, conflicts between the ISA i/o card and the sound card I don't know. What I do know is that after a day of messing around I got the mouse working (disabled on bord serial and floppy controllers) and used the ISA card. The ISA card had a floppy controller on it that may was causing problems with the on board controller. While this was giving certainly giving Floppy Device errors on bootup, it might also have been interfering with the serial ports (I have no idea as to why though) It took me another couple of hours to get the machine working as an X-terminal. I did spent several hours working out why the performance was unusably bad and eventually found a resource conflict between the network card and a sound card. Why did I put a sound card in a machine that will be used solely as an X-terminal? Buggered if i know. I do know this though... Human stupidity (mine) and computer hardware can waste your time. Aaron
[expert] Serial port/mouse problems - need debugging suggestions
I am having a problem getting a mouse to work on an old machine, which I intend to use as an X-terminal. When I did the network install, I could use the graphical install, but the mouse wouldn't work. At the time I thought that poerhaps the serial cable between the 9 pin port and the motherboard was on incorrectly - quite possible as I did not have a motherboard manual to check that cables were all set up properly. Having completed the installation I tried to get the mouse working (played around with the cables on the motherboard, BIOS settings etc). In the end I decided bugger it, and added in an old ISA I/O card that I knew had a working serial port. Dmesg indicates that the kernel is seeing the serial ports (ISA card has ttyS0 & 1, while the onbord are now ttyS2 & 3), but I am still not getting any mouse activity in X. I've checked and played around with XF86Config-4 - in case my understanding of the port numbers was wrong and ensured that there is no hardware fault with the serial mouse (standard 2 button serial). I'm starting to think that perhaps the kernel isn't loading the necessary module to use the mouse (standard 2 button serial Microsoft mouse). I do know that I did insmod generic_serial.o (I think that is how it was spelt) and the module loaded (it didn't say already loaded). I am assuming that this module is the kernel driver for serial ports (but I could be wrong). Is there a kernel module for using serial mice? Otherwise, are there any diagnostic tools I might be able to use to see if it is possible to communicate in any way with the serial port, or mouse? Any help would be appreciated. In all other respects the machine works fine, X runs without incident - but given it will become a dedicated X-terminal, the mouse problem is somewhat of an issue!!! Aaron

RE: [expert] stopping the cups printer
Is the problem from a print job that has gone bad? On my Epson 660, for some reason, some print jobs go haywire and the printer prints pages of rubbish. I'm not sure of the cause as there does not appear to be a pattern - though it occurs more often from KDE 2 apps with the hardwired lpd print dialogue. I have also tried killing the printer buffer by turning off the printer to no avail. For me the problem was solved by running the command fuser /dev/lp0 (as root). This gives you the PID of the process using the parallel port. Give that process number a kill -9 eg kill -9 pidnumber. This should free up your printer and stop the crap. (empty the print queue first though). Exactly correct. Insert your install CD and go into the RPMS directory. Scroll down to the telentdrpm and install it and you're worries should be over. Also you want to verify the your /etc/hosts.deny isn't setup for ALL:ALL. This will also keep people from being able to telnet into a box. [expert] inetd
I have recently installed 7.2 on a couple of boxes at work, possibly 20 in the near future if I can correct this problem. I am unable to use any of the inet/inetd/xinetd services, such as telnet, ftp, rsh I do have inet/inetd/xinetd in the startup services, and have my desired services uncommented in inetd.conf. However whenever I attempt to telnet, rsh, ftp into one of the newly configured boxes I get the following: Trying ... Connected to . Escape character is '^]'. Connection closed by foreign host. I have put ALL:ALL in /etc/hosts.allow and emptied /etc/hosts.deny. I have run out of ideas and am looking for some extra insight. Re: [expert] Perl scripts won't work???
from the command line type which perl and make sure you have the correct path in your script. Try running the program from your web browser (assuming your webserver is properly set up). As a side note for a cgi script I'd recommend using CGI.pm. with cgi.pm this script would become #!/usr/bin/perl -w use strict; use CGI; my $q = new CGI; print $q->header(), $q->start_html(-title=>'Hello world!'), $q->h1('Hello world'), $q->end_html; neater and cleaner without here docs. CGI.pm is an awseome module It gives great insight into learning basic object use in perl. Re: [expert] hard shutdowns
If you turn off xfs, you probably won't be able to run X correctly (That's your X Font Server) You can check for the exisitance of NFS running by looking in /etc/rc.d/rcx.d (Where x is your default run level) Look for something like S##NFS. You can shut it down manually if it is running by doing a /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs stop Good luck -Aaron You can also try "Bruce E. Depends on what you are asking. Are you wwanting MAIL and WEB services? Web, yes it's quite easy to use 1 ip address Use apache and the vhosts module For mail: well, I use qmail. You can get away with only using 1 ip address IF you are willing to live with your users appending their domain name to their pop login. Hi hans.. Look at your /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file. Make sure you have YOUR ip address specified there and make sure that you have port 80 set as the port to use. Wayne, try telnetting to port 25 your IP address It would be like this telnet 205.287.45.3 25 If you get no response, your sendmail SMTP server is not responding. [expert] "fixed" my sound card troubles
Ok...I got back to work here Monday. Here is what I found: When I log in with KDE as my desktop, VIOLA! Sounds work It's when I log in under Enlightenment or Gnome I get the problems..cannot play wav files from xmms, system sounds, etc After doing some reading, I noticed that the esd (Enlightenment Sound Daemon) was not being started. I put the following in my rc.local file: echo "Starting Enlightenment Sound Daemon" /usr/bin/esd & Enabled "Sound server at startup and system sounds" under gnome and "Enable sounds in enlightenment" and rebooted. viola! I now have sound under gnome/enlightenment Whoohoo! This was my workaround for this..anyone else have any other ideas? begin:vcard n:Hackney;Aaron tel;pager:[EMAIL PROTECTED] tel;fax:309-634-2335 tel;home:309-346-2927 tel;work:309-634-2235 x-mozilla-html:FALSE url:aaron.heart.net org:Heart Communications adr:;;221 Hillside Ct. ;Pekin;IL;61554;USA version:2.1 email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] title:Network Engineer x-mozilla-cpt:;0 fn:Aaron Hackney end:vcard

[expert] AWE 64 sound card help please...tried the usual....
OK...I have researched this until I am sick of trying :) I have an AWE64 Creative PNP ISA card. ISAPNP works fine The "LOADING SOUND" in DMESG reports no errors under sndconfig I can hear the sound file and the midi file no problem I *CAN* play MP3's and the like But when I attempt to do system sounds or play a wav file or anythingnadda In fact, when I try and enable sounds under enlightenment, it says "Cannot connect to sound server" or some such nonsense. /dev/sndstat reports that the hardware is found ok under "Audio Devices" but there are NOT the usual drivers listed (or any for that matter) under "Installed Drivers" This card worked fine under the Redhat 6.0 and 6.1 installs I did, but I cannot get it configure under Mandrake 7.0. Anyhelp greatly appriciated! -Aaron

Just a thought Vic, any mail server is going to need some hard drive space...if you don't have enought to compile, you probably wont have enough for an incoming and outgoing mail que or user mailboxes... [expert] SCSI & modules probs after recompile
I am running MDK 6.0 with the init scripts update, kernel 2.2.9-27mdk, Adaptec 2940UW, IBM Ultrastar 9es ddrs-39130 and an ide hd and cd-rom. Shuttle 639 (I think) atx PII 266 with 96 megs of ram. System was running fine but I wanted a more customized kernel ( can't leave things alone ). I installed the headers and source rpms, did xconfig, make dep, make modules, make modules_install, made a new initrd file and updated lilo. All that went fine. On restart with new kernel all looks the same, it finds my 2940 gives the message I get every time about auto termination laods the instructions and a few other kernel related things then it seems to find another 2940?. It gives the termination warning says it found 2 scsi busses then gives this error: SCSI host 1 abort (pid 19) timed out SCSI bus is being reset for host 1 bus 0. Then it gives the same error but adds -trying harder after SCSI host 1 abort (pid19) timed out and repeats that error endlessly. I restarted with my old "stock" 2.2.9-27mdk kernel and now it gives an unresolved symbol error on what looks like every module ( because there is alot of these errors ). Sytem booted fine otherwise. I did not use it much to see what was not working, just shut down in disgust. Any ideas, I hope?! Later, Aaron Winters, Electronic Imaging Manager. Everything's going smoothly, but I've got one major problem: some glibc-based programs refuse to run (e.g. freeamp, oss, q3test), and I get a "command not found error". It's as if I'm trying to run glibc-dependent programs on a libc system. I can't figure this one out at all. Suggestions anyone? --- aaron j. barnes part-time dork [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[expert] What files to upgrade XFree86
I would like to upgrade XFree86 to 3.3.4. I am running Mandrake 6. What files do I need to get? I know I need the server for my card (SVGA). Do I need the fonts? What else? Do I do a rpm -Uvh XFree...rpm to install them? Aaron Winters, Electronic Imaging Manager. Garner Printing, http://camalott.com/~garner http://camalott.com/~kaw

I know this is off topic but I need an answer and I know yall can help :) Does it matter what order you put the wires in the rj45 as per color as long as it is the same on both ends of the cable? I am having hell getting a cable to work! The cable is going from computer to hub and id cat5 wire. The link leds on my hub blink for both speeds (outosensing) as if it can not determin the speed. Has anyone got this card to work under LM6 in X/KDE? I can get X to run in 8bit but the resolution is at something like 320x400 and so I can not do anything (including shutdown). I have checked in XF86Config and it is not using the generic so that must mean there is a problem with drivers I would think. Thanks, Aaron Winters, Electronic Imaging Manager. [expert] Do I enable sound support in kernel for a isa pnp SB16 (? IRQ,DMA)
I am running LM 6 and have a isa pnp SB16. If I enable sound support and the SB driver it needs the irq, dma and soforth information. I do not know since it is pnp. I either want something or I don't. This system is at my house and does not need alot as far as the kernel goes. Is there still a need for modules in a case where you have nothing that you might need loaded sometimes but not others? Later, Aaron Winters, Electronic Imaging Manager. [expert] What happens to old modules after "make modules_install"
I am running LM 6 with the kenel that was installed at at install. All is working but if things are the same as they were in LM 5.2 I can save some memory by compiling my own kernel. I have only used a monolithic kernel and copied it to a floppy to boot from as lilo would always hang on my old system. I have got a new system and lilo is working fine now. With lilo I can boot from more than 1 kernel if the new kernel has a problem (never done anything with lilo either so tips about that would be helpfull also). If I use a kernel with modules what happens to the modules for the old kernel after I make the new ones? If it overwrites the old modules what will happen to the old kernel when and if I try to use it? I want to use a monolithic kernel but (I don't remember who) said that they could not get a 2.2.X kernel to compile without modules. Thanks, Aaron Winters, Electronic Imaging Manager. [expert] Upgrading KDE 1.0 to 1.1 on 5.2
I am running Mandrake 5.2 and want to go to KDE 1.1 since it has been out a while. Has anyone had success doing this? The rpm packager at kde said I should get the rpms from Mandrake. Are the rpms in the 5.3 directory the ones I need? Also can I install on top of 1.0? Any info to help smooth the process would be appriciated.
