Also reset the database. Since you can't get to the setup menu to set the factory Defaults. Re: [Flexradio] Voice keyer through PSDR truncates end of audio on output, progressive worsening
Matt and others, I have read all in the thread, my one addition is that I noticed that you are running VAC 4.10. There were and has been timing and buffering issues that degrade over time with the 4.10 version.. You might want to try the 4.09 version instead, and you will need the signed version for the 64 bit OS..As Tim had said, you need to make sure the Windows default settings for Virtual line 1 and 2 are set to 48K, otherwise there might be some up conversions causing issues... 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flexradio.com http://www.flex-radio.com a href=https://www.crossloop.com/FlexRadioSupport?type=email; target=_blankimg border=0 src= https://www.crossloop.com/images/badge-sm-gray.jpg; alt=Get help from Dudley #40;WA5QPZ#41; Hurry!//a On Tue, Jul 5, 2011 at 10:44 AM, kd0...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I originally posted a version of this to N1MM's reflector, but further troubleshooting points to PowerSDR so I'll continue my quest here. Environment: Windows 7 64bit N1MM Logger V11.6.4 FlexRadio Flex-3000 with PowerSDR 2.0.22 Playback occurs over Virtual Audio Cables (VAC) 4.10.0.2537 I want to feed the output of N1MM's voice keyer to PSDR for contesting, and it works great, at first. The problem is that something is cutting off my recorded wavs about 100ms early and getting progressively worse as I run it. My problem can be duplicated as follows, assuming a regular contest setup for voice on N1MM (using the IARU coming up next weekend currently) 1. Record to N1MM's voice keyer via shift+ctrl+F1-F12 several wav messages 2. Play them as I would in a contest several times, listening to the playback through MOX. The first few times, playback is good. 3. After 5-6 playbacks, they start to get truncated at the end more and more, and a delay starts to get introduced toward the beginning of playback. Eventually the audio is not even playing the final second or two of the message, and there's a silence of around 50% of the end truncation length at the beginning. I've tried ruling out VAC as the source of the trouble using its audio repeater utility. When directing the output of N1MM into the same VAC line and connecting that line to a headset output on the repeater, I do not experience the problem. Further, possibly unrelated, observations: 1. When I direct the audio output direct to headphones instead of VAC, the delay does not happen either 2. I have tried different sample rates, 44k and 48k. While switching sample rate resets the problem (probably N1MM resetting the audio system), it then proceeds to degrade as time goes forward as before. I now suspect that sample rates are a factor, but when they are all set to the same thing on N1MM and PowerSDR it seems it should be OK. VAC appears to handle a wide range of sample rates automatically so I don't know that it would be the factor. 3. I have verified that the wavs play back perfectly outside of n1mm, and also have tried recording wavs with audacity, it seems that ANY wav will exhibit this behavior whatever its source, but the wav files are of good quality and not truncated or corrupt. Re: [Flexradio] Strange issues with 5K
Jack, Sounds like you need to re-run the Receiver Image Test in the Production menu..Most of the time when first loading 2.0.22, it will run the Image test first thing, but does not tell you that you must remove the antennas.. So do this to re-run the test. Good to start with a reset on the database on PowerSDR 2.0.22 or set to Factory Defaults, with all the antennas removed, PowerSDR up and started, do a ctrl - shift - P on the keyboard.Once in the Production Test, click on the Receiver Image Button on the left hand side. The test will set through all the bands to run the Image test. Be sure to let it complete writing the data to the EEPROM once done. Close down PowerSDR, count to 5 (for all the background processes to close) then restart PowerSDR.. Bill, Your original issue, you should go to where your database is located and flush (delete) the Wisdom besides the database if one was every built .. This is in your Appdata folder under Flexradio Systems in the PowerSDR v2.0.23folder , Then the next time you bring up that version of PSDR the black window will re-appear and re-run, successfully I hope. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flexradio.com http://www.flex-radio.com a href=http://www.crossloop.com/FlexRadioSupport?type=email; target=_blankimg border=0 src= http://www.crossloop.com/images/badge-sm-gray.jpg; alt=Get help from Dudley Hurry!//a On Mon, May 23, 2011 at 10:20 AM, William H. We have developed a hardware modification to the 160m transmit filter section in response to a half dozen customer reports of a spur 2.4 kHz above the CW transmit frequency. This is only an issue if the station is running legal limit power CW on 160m with very large antenna arrays. In the legal limit case the CW spur would still be only on the order of 6 mW (we have measured approximately -53 to -57 dBc), which might be heard by other similar big gun stations with quiet antennas. On 160m SSB or AM it is really a non issue. For new production radios starting around December 2010 with Rev Q or higher HTRX boards, the modification is installed on all new radios. We only install this ECO into existing radios upon specific request because in our opinion it affects so very few people. If you fit this operating criteria, we are happy to install the ECO. Re: [Flexradio] Flex SDR Video Screen Capture WITH Audio
Joe, There are several ways you can do this, I'll give you a couple of easy ways, others will have suggestions too.. One quick way is to run a male to male 3.5 mm stereo cable from the Power Speaker output to your soundcard input, then set the video capture to the soundcard input. Or you can use the Line Out with a Y connector to a stereo 3.5 mm for the soundcard input. Another way is to set the VAC output settings in the Audio tab of Setup menu of PowerSDR to Soundmapper or your sound card input, and like the setup above, set the program to soundcard input.. But doing this will mess up your digital settings for VAC. If this is the case, leave VAC set for Virtual lines, and use the VAC Repeater, which can be set to the VAC out for input and Soundcard input, etc.. Hope this helps. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flexradio.com http://www.flex-radio.com a href=http://www.crossloop.com/FlexRadioSupport?type=email; target=_blankimg border=0 src= http://www.crossloop.com/images/badge-sm-gray.jpg; alt=Get help from Dudley Hurry!//a On Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 7:34 PM, Joe kc...@comcast.net wrote: I was working the VHF contest this past weekend and wanted to capture some signal displays from the Panadapter. I did not know about the touch switch when I chose the monitor. Several years back, my son had a desk lamp with a touch switch and my traditional radio used to play havoc with his desk lamp, turning it from low to medium to high, and off again when I was transmitting. Now, with the Flex 3000, the same thing is happening to my monitor. When I am transmitting, RF from the antenna outside, randomly affects the touch switch sometimes turning the monitor off and perhaps back on, and sometimes locking the monitor off until I unplug the monitor's power supply and plug it back in. I don't have to tell you what a total annoyance that is on a radio completely controlled by the mouse. The radio continues to work with the monitor off. You just can't make any changes or log a contact. In attempting to solve the problem, I have grounded all station equipment and put ferrites on every cable. Fortunately, these measures have cut the noise floor way down on receive, but they have done nothing to prevent the monitor from going off during transmission. Short term, is there a keyboard shortcut to turn off the Tune function on the Flex 3000 if the monitor goes off while I am tuning the antenna? This happened the other day. I had to push the blue On/Off button cutting power to the radio in order to stop it from transmitting a Tune signal. I am desperate for solution to this problem. Re: [Flexradio] Problem with the function Wave
Claudio, Welcome to the FlexRadio Reflector and glad that you have the radio working for you.. There are two ways to record what you are hearing, the fastest way is using the Quick Record/Playback feature on the main console, this is intended to be played back over the air, is Post Processed (after all the DSP) for record and Pre-Processed on playback, and you have to have either the MOX depressed or PTT BEFORE hitting the Play button. The second way is to use the Wave menu at the top, which will allow you to record the actual digital I/Q signals coming from the radio, so you can play it back and tune the SW just like it was looking at a radio. To do this, you open the Wave menu, click the Options menu (upper left corner) have the Pre-Processed for Receive (before any of the DSP processes the signal) and Post Processed on Transmit (sent out After and DSP processes) This is how Flex demos the radios at shows, by playback the pre-recorded wav I/Q files, also you can set the sample rate. Warning, on the 5K you can record at full 192 khz sample, this will use a lot of disk space very quickly, so start at 48K first. Note: With the 1500 you can record 192K, but will only display 48K of the signal. On playback you can tune within the recorded signal, set the bandwidths, etc. like you had the radio, BUT the actual frequency data is not absolute, the displayed frequency is only relative within the I/Q signal, there is no frequency data retained. Now both the Quick Record and the Wave recordings are contained in different places depending on the version. With the 1.18.6 and earlier versions, the recordings are in the PowerSDR install folder, c:\program files\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v 1.X.X .With the Beta 2.0.X versions the recordings are in your user name folder appdata FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v 2.0.X folder. Easiest way to get to that folder for all versions of Windows is to go to the Run program and type %AppData%then this will get you to the application folder directly under your user name. Then go to FlexRadio Systems folder = PowerSDR V 2.0.X there you will see the individual WAV files. You will notice that the SDRQuickAudio.wav file is there along with any recorded with the WAVE menu. They will have a name with the mode/frequency/date/time .wav file name, so at least you will know where and when it was recorded. The QuickAudio files can be played back with Windows Media player, but the I/Q recordings can not for obvious reasons (They are not audio files but digital data files) . If you want to play back some large I/Q files, go to my web site, http://wa5qpz.com= downloads there are several there.. Re: [Flexradio] Transmit Audio Distortion
Jim, I was wondering what kind of audio distortion you were getting reports of? One thing about the PR40 and just about all Heil microphones is that you should not get any closer than 4 inches to the mic, or 6 inches if you have a big booming voice, the lows will get so muffled that it will sound distorted.. Also did you try the PR40 setting in the Expert Transmit Profiles? My first attempt was not to decide so I put a pair of 220 ohm resistors in series with the left and right side outputs going to the headset, but I think this is a little too much resistance - getting the volume up to a level where I can pick stuff out of the noise causes the 1500 to start distorting. How low of a resistance can I go with the resistors connecting the left and right sides together before I have to worry about hurting the outputs. The manual says that they should not be directly connected together, which precludes using a standard adapter to go from stereo to mono. The outputs should also not be grounded so a stereo connector into the radio must be used. Re: [Flexradio] RF Feedback follow up info
David, To add to what Tim said, there is a way to test if the RF is coming in through the mic circuit or into the digital side in the computer. The dummy load will let you know if the RF is radiated or internal, but also if you do a Quick record of someone over the air, and then play it back over the air, to see if the recording has the same RF that you have in your mic. When you playback a recording, the mic circuit is disconnected, so if the recording comes out clean, then the RF is getting into the mic cabling somewhere. Recently it has been found that some Yaesu adapters have the shields grounded to pin 7 instead of actual chassis ground of pin 5 of the mic connector. Pin 7 is Mic (-) and not chassis ground. Pin 8 is Mic ( + ) . Also there has been some microphones that do not have the outside of the case tied to the shield, so you might want to take an ohm meter and verify that all the cases and shields are tied to Pin 5. While you are at it, the outside metal of the mic connector should also be tied to Pin 5.. Hope this helps... 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flexradio.com http://www.flex-radio.com Tune in excitement! ™ On Sat, Jan 1, 2011 at 5:50 PM, David Edwards w...@verizon.net wrote: Forgot to mention Radio is Flex 5000, Power SDR v2.0.8, OS Windows XP Home on Pentium 4, 3 Ghz, 4 gb ram thanks de WB1S ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/ ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

So I disconnected the Tokyo HY-Power HL-45B amplifier, and even removed the amplifier cable with the RS-232 9-Pin plug from the back of the rig. I unplugged everything. I then connected the antenna coax, the power cord/plug, and the cable which runs to the USB port on the back of my computer. All with the same result: a flat line when I started up PowerSDR. Then I clicked Reset Database, and, after turning everything back on I got that same flat line. I imported the database that was working yesterday, with the same result: the flat line. I tested my antenna with another radio and it is up and working, even in the cold weather and high winds we are experiencing here in southwestern Virginia. So the antenna and its coax are in good shape. I tried and tried and tried to turn on the rig, all with the same flat line result. I don't know what to do next. I have the rig sitting in the middle of my desk, with only the power plug, the USB cable, the plug for my external speakers and the antenna coax connected; every time I push the Off/On switch the blue light comes on and usually I can hear the double-tone in the external speakers. Now, sometimes that double tone is sort of muffled; and sometimes I don't hear the double tone at all... Right now I am getting the muffled sound... I don't know if this means anything. The radio will neither go into transmit nor receive. I have had this radio since September, and this is the first time I've seen this condition. This rig has worked exquisitely until now. I am running PowerSDR v. 2.0.8, as that was on the original disc that came with the rig. I was just about to work up my courage to transfer over to v. 2.0.16... I am running the rig on my Dell Dimension C521 desktop computer: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ 1.9 GHz, 3.43 GB of RAM Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 I turned off my computer, and rebooted. I had nothing else running on the computer. I turned on the FLEX-1500 and heard the double tone in the speaker, as usual. But when I clicked on the FLEX icon, and clicked on the start button, I saw the same flat line. I have fallen in love with this radio. Is there anyone out there who can help me to get it up
Re: [Flexradio] Can I Save Transmit Equalizer settings?
Gary, The EQ settings are saved as part of the Transmit Profile.Open the Transmit tab in Setup menu, then once you have all the settings you want to save, TX Drive level, Mic gain, etc, then select Save, then you have the opportunity to save the TX settings under the same name or give it a new name. Then when ever you want those particular TX settings, select that profile and those settings will be installed. Hope this helps. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flexradio.com http://www.flex-radio.com Tune in excitement! ™ On Tue, Dec 14, 2010 at 4:02 PM, Gary Warner garyw...@gmail.com wrote: I am running SDR 2.0.16. Re: [Flexradio] Running VAC
Tom, I've been watching the thread on your MixW experience. It's really quite simple, but each digital program sets up slightly different. Most folks more issues with DM780 and not MixW. There are only two major pieces to making the digital programs work, VAC (virtual audio cable) and a virtual serial program (like VSP Manager or Com0Com) VAC just transports the audio just like a physical cable, there are some buffers and sample rates to get setup, but these are pretty well documented. Thousands use this and it just runs in the background, but version 4.09 Full (signed if you are running 64 bit OS) must be used with PowerSDR due to some conflicts with the 4.10 version. VSP Manager is needed to transport CAT data from PowerSDR to your digital program. And the only reason for the need to generate virtual com ports is that Windows requires each program that talks to a com port to be unique, so instead of having a physical com port talk to another physical com port, it's done in SW. Much like talking into a tube, what ever goes in one end will come out on the other end to another com port, two virtual com ports are tied together.. Steve has done a great job of working up VSP Manager, but you must contact him directly to obtain a copy, k...@arrl.com So as you figured out, get the audio working first, output of PowerSDR (in the VAC tab of Setup) via the Virtual Lines to the input of the digital program.Follow the procedure in one of the Knowledge Center articles http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50230.aspx Or in the http://flexradiowiki.com user input pages.Either should get you going.. It really does work, but the BIGGEST thing to remember is to make one change at a time.. If you try to make too many changes at once, you will need to stop, close everything down, reboot the computer and start up again. Things like Windows Drivers, DCE and other things will get too confused, and will give the appearance that nothing is working.. As others have done in the past, you too will get over the hump and have it all working together.. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flexradio.com http://www.flex-radio.com Tune in excitement! ™ On Sun, Dec 12, 2010 at 1:12 AM, Tom Bray t...@wb8cox.com wrote: I tried all that, in the order recommended. You always need to start PowerSDR first and have VAC enabled so that it controls the VAC cable properties before starting the digital mode program. Re: [Flexradio] double images on transmit - sdr1000
Dan, If you are showing up on upper and lower at the same time, you are missing one side of the I/Q or the stereo out of the sound card. This can be due to poor connections or balanced modulator in the radio it self.. Have you performed the TX Image adjustment? Also check your power out after doing the adjustment in SSB, key down, either with PTT or MOX, with no audio (set the mic gain at 0 ) if you see any RF output, then it's most likely the balance modulator. But do the TX Image test first, null out the opposite sideband. If you have to send it in, I can issue the RMA number for you.. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flexradio.com http://www.flex-radio.com Tune in excitement! ™ On Wed, Dec 8, 2010 at 11:19 PM, Dan Scott dscott1...@comcast.net wrote: Hello, After running basically flawlessly on this system for a couple years (maybe 3) I've have recently received a few reports of generating signals on two frequencies. Re: [Flexradio] Scratchy Audio
Ken, You say it works ok with the 5000?Interesting.. You might want to make sure in your Control Panel = Add/remove programs that you have the kb955408 HotFix loaded into your XP computer. Also, take a look at your DPCs, Delayed Process Calls, with the DPC Latency Checker, to verify that there is not a large DPC causing the RX thread to get out of sync. http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50058.aspx Just load this little program on your desktop, you can execute it from there, just let it run in the background and watch for any large jumps. Anything greater than 2000us is Danger, Danger, Will Robinson! . These large jumps can cause the busy RX threads to start to loose sync or stop altogether. Also look for any jumps in system activity, some motherboard manufacturer have the SATA , chipsets, and everything else on the same interrupt (IRQ) with the USB and FireWire controllers. Microsoft IRQ sharing is good, but not perfect.. Verify that the grounds for the computer and radio are to the same common point. Re: [Flexradio] New 1500 - MIC Monitor always on ?
Richard, The receiver audio is intended to come out on through the Phones output. Rerouting through the computer speakers can be done, but not as designed. Using the USB port the 1500 is limited to half duplex where as the 3000/5000 are actually able to run full duplex .i'll discuss this with Eric for some kind of resolution, but in the mean time, you can physically connect the phone jack to the sound input of the sound card, then you will have the RX muting and stereo output from the radio.. Re: [Flexradio] VAC Level Settings
Steve, Usually done manually, and it varies according to the AGC - T settings too, so different modes cause different settings for VAC.. This maybe part of you varying level issues.. On suggestion, have different databases saved by use..With the Beta versions of PowerSDR you can Export the database without having to Reset and then re-import..So make you changes, and then save the database, usually to your desktop with a time/date stamp. Just rename it to what you recognize, like Digital_HRD Then next time you want the HRD settings, before you hit the start of PowerSDR, just do an Import in the Setup menu.. Maybe this helps. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flexradio.com http://www.flex-radio.com Tune in excitement! ™ On Tue, Nov 16, 2010 at 12:25 PM, Steve Sterling f...@sgsterling.comwrote: Anyone know if there is a way to store and reselect VAC level settings? re: pSDR v1.18.06 Let me explain my question. After having my F5K for a few months, I am starting to get a plethora of apps I want to attach to VAC at various times. DigiPan, N1MM (voice drone), Skype, IP-Sound, etc. I haven't hooked up CW-skimmer yet, but soon! Each one of these seem to need different level settings. In the digital modes, at least the Mode Specific Controls for RX and TX gain are on the main panel. There doesn't seem to be a way to set the TX Profile (profile save under setuptransmit is grayed out) like you can with mic audio, although the pulldown is there. Thus when switching between digital apps, I must record the gain values on paper and readjust on a change. On voice-- Skype, IP-Sound, etc there isn't even main screen adjustments. To change requires going into setupaudioVAC and making the RX and TX gain changes there. Big difference in the numbers used also. My uneducated guess is they use different numbers of bits-- obviously different codecs. Anyway, on voice, again I have no way to store values within the app-- it requires me keeping track and manually making the settings as I shift. Am I miss understanding a feature in the software? Is there some grand VAC traffic cop app like ddUtil for the com port traffic? Re: [Flexradio] Comparing Flex to K3 for contesting
Jack, Reading the thread on the focus issue, one suggestion is that most contest stations that would use the Flex have atleast two screens, unless they use an external aid, such as Bettie's controller or HotWheels to focus the mouse, Windows has an option to have the focus on the window that is under the mouse, so that where ever the mouse sets, is the Windows focus. HotWheels is another, where you can keep the mouse focused on one screen and the keyboard on another.. Just some of the comments made on this subject. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flexradio.com dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flexradio.com http://www.flex-radio.com/ Tune in excitement! ™ On Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 2:34 PM, Jack Haverty j...@3kitty.org wrote: On Sun, 2010-11-14 at 12:47 -0500, Drax Felton wrote: Very interesting post. I wonder how the Flex compares against the almighty Elecraft K3. I've been contesting with the Flex-3000 for 18 months now, and like it a lot. I haven't used a K3 in any contest, but the K3 certainly seems to be the standard for serious contesters. Most of the contest stations seem to use a K3, often 2 or 3 of them, as well as more as spares. If you look at the posts on the 3830 contesting list, there's lots of discussions of stations and how people use them in contests. I've thought about getting a K3 for contesting - but I'm not a serious contester at this point, and maybe will never be one. Here's what I've learnedIMHO of course. In contesting, the Flex doesn't compete against the K3. You have to look at the whole station as it is used in contests. A serious contest station might have several K3s, many antennas and amps, switching gear, rotor controllers etc., and a software complement as well - Writelog or N1MM, Internet spotting support, and maybe even a CW Skimmer. A Flex-based contest station would have a similar complement of components. Even a simple contest station has several pieces of hardware and software. The comparison has to be between the total stations, not just between one of the components. The Flex panadapter is very cool - but contesters are now adding the Elecraft panadapter to provide similar functions. I's not nearly as good as the PowerSDR display, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a PC-based add-on K3 display that enables the use of standard widescreen LCD displays through the same K3 interface. The comments from contesters after they first use a K3 panadapter indicate that such a display will become standard for contest stations. Once you have experienced being able to see the contest, you can't survive blind mode anymore. In contesting, the primary station interface today is the computer, just like with the Flex. But the software that provides the user interface is the logger, e.g., N1MM or Writelog. These contest-optimized programs are highly tuned to contesting, and do far more than just logging. During contests, there's little need to actually use the knobs and buttons on the radio - i.e., either the K3 front panel or the PowerSDR screen. Everything is done through the logger. Many stations use multiple radios - SO2R or Single-Op-2-Radios, which are operated simultaneously in a highly coordinated fashion. Multi-op stations often have several such stations, all interconnected by a LAN, and coordinated by the software. In other words, a contest SDR uses Writelog or N1MM as the primary user interface, often controlling a complex station with with multiple radios, in the same way that a typical Flex station uses PowerSDR with a single radio. The K3 has become entrenched, and such complex stations are by now well understood and integrated. It all works like a Swiss watch. In contrast, I've been using my Flex-3000 with N1MM for contesting - PowerSDR's window full of virtual controls plays the same role as the K3 front panel in the typical contest station. I.E., a very small role - you rarely need to touch the knobs and buttons, both the physical ones on a K3 or the virtual ones in the PowerSDR window. When I contest, I'm mostly typing at the N1MM window, and mousing on the PowerSDR panadaptor. In the PowerSDR/N1MM integrated world, contesting works, but it's a somewhat contentious marriage compared to the K3. E.G., using the same mouse/keyboard with 2 user interfaces can become unwieldy keeping the focus in the right place. Little things become annoying - e.g., the need to bring up the separate Mixer window just to mute/unmute the speaker. Or the fact that the PowerSDR window insists on consuming so much screen real estate, when all I really want is a short, wide window showing the panadapter. It's a watch, but not Swiss. Also, CW is very important to contesters. and the lack of full break-in is noticeable. I've worked CW contests with the Flex, and I often can tell that a full QSK system would be much

Re: [Flexradio] No signal present in the panadapter display whether in the recieve or transmit mode.
Ron, Hang in there, as you could tell, I was not real sure as to what's going on with the RX Thread not coming up.. There is going to be a hands on meeting tomorrow at Flex to find a resolution.. Your thought about the T/R relay would work for a standard analog radio, but not with the SDR.. The reason for the flat line and the low reading in the RX meter is that the RX thread is not starting up, this is the way the IF signals (actually called I/Q signals) get from the physical radio to the digital side in the computer. This thread and the the TX thread transport the I/Q signals to and from the radio.. It's like pulling the last IF amplifier tube out of a tube receiver, results in dead receiver.. Graham, I think that the computer soundcard and MS Plug and Play maybe helping you.. Make sure that the computer sound card is defined in your Windows Sound Driver properties for Recording and Playback, and not the Flex 1500. If you are using MME, have Flex1500 in both the input and outputs. If you are using ASIO sound driver, you may have to disable the internal sound card to get the ASIO driver to recognize the Flex 1500 as active through Plug and Play.Once you have it working there, then you can turn on the internal sound card again.. Re: [Flexradio] Skype AUDIO DELAY and PowerSDR DSP / Buffer Size drawback
Mike, I am not sure that the DSP buffers are what you real issue with Skype is, check you VAC buffering, in PowerSDR, VAC and in Windows Sounds. Win7 seems to love to reset the Virtual Audio lines 1 and 2 to 44K for sample rather than the 48K that we have VAC buffering set for in the VAC tab. Also you might just try to lower the VAC buffering to better match the Skype buffer (not sure where in Skype to find this, so you may need to play with the settings) instead of 48K try a lower rate, 22050.. The buffer transitioning may be more the issue. I have Windows XP-SP3 installed on both computers, and both computers are running PowerSDR 2.0.8. My desire is to operate the radios REMOTELY. I accomplish this by running the free version of LogMeIn, which allows me to connect and see/control the respective remote-accessible computer-radios described above. For the AUDIO PATH, I use Skype, which is set up as auto-answer. I have VAC 4.0.9 set up, which couples the Skype audio to and from PowerSDR. All of this works very reliable. But, I have been experiencing a noticeable time lag as I transmit (via Skype) to the remote radio/PowerSDR! This time lag is in the range of two to three SECONDS. The end result is that as I use the radio remotely, I must watch my transmitted audio in PowerSDR, making sure that I do not un-key before all of my audio stream has made it through the transmitter. (If I simply unkey when I am done talking, I CLIP the tail end of my transmission.) I had read of the reasons for experimenting with the BUFFER SIZE in PowerSDR DSP Options Buffer size Phone; In my experimenting, I had the discovery (impression) that the audio did not seem to have the DELAY any more! My default setting for the PHONE BUFFER SIZE was 2048 for both radios; I dropped this to 512, then 128. My Skype audio delay was almost completely gone! I ran it this way for a couple days; -But I soon was advised that I had something that was wrong with my transmitted signal. -It was like I was operating in DSB mode, not LSB on 75 meters! Resetting the phone buffer size to 2048 (to 1024 in the case of the Flex-3000/Mac Mini) resolved the issue. When I had the transmit buffer size set to a lower value, I had noticed that my panadapter display of my SSB transmitted signal was a bit wider than usual but thought nothing of this, thinking that the different buffer size was simply changing the FILTER SHAPE. I also noticed that when I would go to TUNE mode or use the two radio's built in auto-tuner, I was seeing TWO SPIKES of RF in those (CW) modes, not the ONE that I had seen in the past. In my on-air troubleshooting, I noticed that the secondary spike would change size (decrease) as I increased the transmit buffer number. So, the DRAWBACK is that my SSB transmitted signal would degrade if I had the transmit buffer set to a lower value. NEW TWIST: As I operated the radio in remote mode, I again suffered the long time lag, as I waited for my audio to be transmitted, before I could un-key the radio in LogMeIn. However, I am now noticing that when I begin a new remote-radio session, I could decrease the long time lag by simply setting the transmit buffer to 512 (as an example) then return it to the more normal longer setting! The time lag had gone away for that session. QUESTION: What have I stumbled into? I seem to have the ability to decrease the Skype-audio-delay for that one remote session, but I am sure that there is the right way, as compared to my way. (Is there a more correct way to resolve the remote audio delay?) Last bits of information: I have my PowerSDR Audio Primary Buffer Size set to 1024, sample rate at 9600 on the Flex-3000. I have my PowerSDR Audio VAC Buffer size set to 512. Changing either of these buffer sizes does not seem to make much difference. Re: [Flexradio] Skype AUDIO DELAY and PowerSDR DSP / Buffer Size drawback
Mike, Good reference for the cause and effect of the DSP filters is Appendix A in the current manual. You must be careful of the lower DSP buffer settings as it will spread the signal out. If the delay is in Skype, work with matching the Skype sample rate to the PowerSDR sample in the VAC window.. This seems to really helps some of the digital modes, so that there is less work in the buffer transitions.. Funny things can happen when sample rates don't match, somewhere a program has to make the transition of sample rates.. Sample rates, Sample rates.. Not just the buffers, although they may have an effect also.. I am not sure why changing the DSP buffer and then back to default would affect the Skype transfer, but I am sure that is something being resync'd. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flex-radio.com Tune in excitement! ™ On Thu, Oct 14, 2010 at 10:36 PM, Mike Schwendeman m...@s3com.net wrote: Hi, Dudley; I'll add my comments to your email below: On 10/14/10 4:03 PM [Oct 14], FlexRadio Support, Dudley Hurry wrote: Mike, I am not sure that the DSP buffers are what you real issue with Skype is, check you VAC buffering, While I respect your suggestion, all I can say is that I have a cause and effect which sure seems to at least CHANGE the audio delay. Win7 seems to love to reset the Virtual Audio lines 1 and 2 to 44K for sample rather than the 48K that we have VAC buffering set for in the VAC tab. Again, as a recap: I am predictably able to decrease my audio delay-time by changing the PowerSDR DSP Options Buffer size Phone from the default to some lower value. -But, if i leave the setting at a 512 or 256 as an example, my transmitted signal is no longer SSB, but a sort of DSB. My CW note (in TUNE mode) is no linger a single tone. (See my original email for a more complete coverage of the details.) Why is it that my transmitted SSB signal is getting messy, with me emitting what seems like a DSB signal, when I change the PowerSDR DSP Options Buffer size Phone from 2048 to 512 or 256??? -Keep in mind that this is on two computers, running a Flex-3000 and a Flex-5000a. 73; -Mike- KØJTA 73, Dudley WA5QPZ ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

He had SSB QSO's on 17m and 20m with several hams with no RFI problems whatsoever. Then we simply disconnected my F5000 and connected his F5000 in its place. Nothing was moved. Except for replacing my F5000 with his, everything else remained identical - same antennas (cubical quad), same power supply, same computer, same firewire cable, same speaker cable, etc. Same everything. He even sat in my chair!! In trying to talk with the hams we did previously, KC5PD immediately had very serious RFI problems, where we had no RFI problems minutes earlier using my F5000 with the same mic connected to the front. We then connected my mic to the balanced I/P on KC5PD's F5000, and the RFI problems disappeared. In summary, with both rigs at my QTH: 1. I have no RFI problems on my rig whether I use the balanced I/P with my mic or the front mic connector with KC5PD's mic. 2. With KC5PD's F5000 at my shack, he has no RFI problems with the mic connected via the balanced I/P. Thus, there is some sort of significant RFI problem with KC5PD's F5000 when he uses the front mic input. In an identical configuration using his mic and his mic cable, I have no such problem. (His mic cable has been properly grounded per Dudley's and Heil's recommendation.) As an interesting side note, the serial # on his rig bears absolutely no relation whatsoever to the serial # on my rig, even though they were on the same order and were shipped together. I don't know what this means, but it seems odd. Any comments or suggestions would be most appreciated, as KC5PD has about exhausted his Flexibility in trying to get a resolution to this problem. Re: [Flexradio] DDR II 800Mhz vs 677
David, Faster usually means better, but depends on the computer motherboard and processor's bus.If the bus is only 667 mhz, adding 800 mhz memory is not going to help. If you mix slower memory with fast, it will revert to the slowest speed, and it's a good ideal to keep all the memory the same brand/model. To get the most efficiency out of DDRII, memory modules are usually installed in matched pairs. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flex-radio.com Tune in excitement! ™ On Fri, Oct 8, 2010 at 1:26 AM, David Walker vk...@bigpond.com wrote: Does anyone know if there would be a performance improvement by upgrading 677 ddrII ram to 800 ram? Re: [Flexradio] N4J active on Saturday with FLEX 3000
Geep, I'll try to keep an ear open for you. 40 meters might be alittle touch and go this far during the day, but 20 shouldn't be a problem. I usually leave my radio during the day on 14.329..might pick a frequency, and I will look for during the day. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FlexRadio Systems (512) 250-8595, Option 2 Email: dud...@flex-radio.com Web: www.flex-radio.com Tune in excitement! ™ On Wed, Oct 6, 2010 at 8:25 PM, Geep Howell g...@wa4rts.net wrote: Should be fun, Dudley. I don't think we will have internet access, unfortunately, so no way to post anything here, but I may be able to get somebody else to do it. I expect sort of a sporadic operation, as this won't be a hot new location for a lot of folks, but an interesting one. Just got the 3000 reloaded with the latest firmware to run 2.08, and flDigi is running great, so we may try some PSK. I think the operation will be primarily voice, probably with a 40 meter start and then moving over to 20. Hope the bands cooperate. geep On Oct 6, 2010, at 8:16 PM, Dudley Hurry wrote: Geep, Sounds like a fun day.. We'll probably get started around 0900 EDT and finish up around 1500 EDT, mostly voice, but perhaps PSK31 as well. Poplar Forest was Jefferson's retreat from Monticello, near Charlottesville, and he was there quite often, especially in his later years. There are lots of interesting exhibits of his inventions, experiments with growing things, and his taste for wine and beer -- made his own most of the time. The house itself is slowly being finished up, and is an octagonally shaped building with some of his inventions in place for the public to view. I've been asked to bring a FLEX radio system out and demo/train operators so we will have more ops that aren't scared away by the new technology of SDR's. I remind them of the Kachina and the SDR 1000 but many of these folks think the FLEX 5000 is the first one ever. I expect to be using a 3000 and a dipole antenna, so may not have the biggest signal on the band, but should be audible. QST and CQ October issues have the details, but we plan on 40 and 20 meters for the most part. Be glad to talk with any Flexers who are around during the day.
