[Flexradio] Frustrated with VAC, WSJT and Fkex

2014-07-19 Thread John Vandenberg

You may try my settings I collected...

WSJT-X OPERATION (JT9 and JT65)

Version 1.2 of WSJT-X offers two protocols or “modes,” JT9 and JT65.
Both are designed for making reliable,
confirmed QSOs under extreme weak-signal conditions. They use nearly
identical message structure and source
encoding. JT65 was designed for EME (“moonbounce”) on the VHF/UHF bands
and has also proved very effective
for worldwide QRP communication at HF. JT9 is optimized for the LF, MF,
and HF bands. It is about 2 dB more
sensitive than JT65 while using less than 10% of the bandwidth. Both
modes use one-minute timed sequences of
alternating transmission and reception, so a minimal QSO takes 4 to 6
minutes — two or three transmissions by each
station, one sending in odd minutes and the other even. World-wide QSOs
are possible with power levels of a few

watts and compromise antennas.
Note: WSTJ-X implements both JT9 and JT65
Introduction http://www.physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx.html
Frequencies http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.radio.wsjt/318
Band Dial Freq
(m) (MHz)
---
160 1.838
80 3.576
60 5.357
40 7.076
30 10.138
20 14.076
17 18.102
15 21.076
12 24.917
10 28.076
6 50.276
With above dial frequency settings JT65 signals would be expected at
audio frequencies

270 to 2270 Hz, JT9 signals at 2500 to 4000 Hz.

CONFIGURATION OF WSJT-X
• My Call: ve3dvv
• My Grid: FN03bd
• PTT
DTR com8 (com18 in PWRSDR)
Test it with 'Test PT' button.
• Enable PSK Reporter
• Enable CAT: com5 (RCP3 in DDUtil)
Note: If not using DDUtil use Com11 for CAT
• Rig: Kenwood TS-2000
•
• Audio in: Vac2
• Audio out: Vac1
CONFIGURATION OF PWRSDR (via DDUTIL)
• Keep Vac and Cat like default (see DDUTIL and VAC)
• Select DIGU mode and Low/Hi filter: 200/4200Hz

OPERATION
• Read and follow 'Basic Operating Tutorial' in users guide
• In 'WideGraph' click Green marker for receive freq. For both RXTX
hold Ctrl while clicking.

• Favourite settings:
Bins/Pixel7, Start0, Zero -3, N Avg 5, JT652500 JT9, Slope 1.1, Gain 0,
Current, Default

WHAT TO CHECK IF IT DOES NOT WORK
• Load VAC control panel and check both VAC In/Out are running at 48.000Hz
If not correct settings check VAC
• Check if VAC is enabled in PWRSDR-Setup Audio/VAC
• Check WSJT-X User's Guide
• Check reports on http://wsprnet.org/drupal/
• Check for time accuracy on computer. Use Dimension 4 from
HTTP://www.thinkman.com/dimension

and double check that with WWV

Have fun

Yes, I once had WSJT (JT-65A) working, but that was two computers ago. I've
even made one six meter ENE contact and been heard by several stations.
With
W7GJ now at KH8, I'd like to try to work him. But, without WSJY, VAC and
Power SDR working together, there's no chance.

I do have VAC installed and the latest Released version of WSJT as well as
VSP manager. So, I don't need instructions on downloading and installing
same. The OLD Knowledge Center article that I printed out a year or two
ago,
spends a lot of verbiage on downloading and installing these programs. It
talks about installing VAC into Power SDR Version 1.14.0. That's how old it
is.

One of things it says it to make sure that Flex 5000 Firewire device driver
is set to the same parameters and Safe Mode 1 is the operating mode. It
refers to another Knowledge Center article to explain how to do this.

Going to the Flex Website, I find no place to find Knowledge Center
articles
anymore. Has the Knowledge Center been done away with? I did find a
so-called White Paper entitled

LEVERAGING SDR FOR BETTER DIGITAL MODE COMMUNICATIONS. But it is nothing
but a sales pitch for software defined radio and VAC. I don't need a sales
pitch. I'm already convinced re SDR and have been for years..

What I need is a good up-to-date step-by-step description of what
parameters
to set into Power SDR, VAC and WSJT. At the moment, I'm getting an ERROR
message in WSJT saying Error in opening audio channels and some other
stuff that says it won't work.

I DID have the audio stream running normally an hour or so back, but I've
obviously messed it up now.

Frustrated,

Bill Tynan, W3XO/5 EM00kd

Subject: [Flexradio] to order a 6300 or not.

?? ? ? ?I have had Flex rigs from the first 1000 kit to my current 5000a.
I have downloaded all the spec sheets, that are out there, and read all
the beta testing remarks from the various testers. None of which really
tell me much about how the 6300 will work out in the real world, under day
to day hamming. I have not seen any comparisons to the performance of the
6300/5000a, weather they be suggested improvements over the 5000a or even
improvements based on the new 6300's technology.
?? ? ? ? The 6300, looks great on paper and the engineering write-ups,
but what will I gain in REAL LIFEday to day operation over my 5000a.
Iam not a con tester, like to work dx and also rag chew. I do little CW
any longer, arthritis in the fingers, the 5000a could be easily passed up,
for this mode.
?? ? ? ?I already have a big investment in the computer,I-7 ,to run the
5000a, which of course would run the 6300 also,so thats a wash. I like
the audio on my 5000a, use a balanced condenser mic and have received
comments on the pleasant audio. Would have to go back to the unbalanced
on the 6300.
?? ? ? ? I run a hex beam and do not need the tuner ,but I also run a
vertical and a OCF dipole for 160 to 80 meters which I do need the tuner
on the 5000a for.
?? ? ? ? ?I guess Iam looking for reasons to dump the 5000a and move UP
to the 6300,so far Iam not seeing many, other than being the first guy on
the block to buy the new model car.
?? ? ? ? ?Thanks for reading, would like to hear other guys thoughts on
the subject.

[Flexradio] Distorted TX audio PWRSDR-2.6.4

2013-06-26 Thread John Vandenberg
After updating the software in Win7-64 to PWRSDR-2.6.4 the TX audio is
badly distorted (did try reset database). The same update on my
Win7-32 system worked fine. When I checked the FW driver in Device
manager they are both using the 1394 OHCI Compliant Host controller
legacy driver. I was surprised since I thought it would use the new
Flex Firewire driver 4.1.1 .

The FW card uses the TI chip-set and worked fine in previous versions of
PWRSDR.

I would like to try the new FW driver. How do I manual install this
since it did not do this on the update.

Note: using DPCLAT or the Flex program I don`t see any bad DPC`s and the
Flex program recommend `Normal Mode`

Any suggestionsÉ

2013-04-10 Thread John Vandenberg
When looking at the KB 50450 block diagram for the F1K5 I cannot find
were the VAC ties in.

I would like to see if in USB (SSB) mode the VAC is effected by settings
of the DX compresser) and CPDR buttons.

For EasyPal I want the DXexpender in the chain for voice, but out of the
path for receiving/transmitting the picture.

Up till now I have been switching to DIGU for when RX/TX for pictures.

A picture showing were the VAC ties in together with the audio
processing would be very helpfull.

Been using the card successfully with DDUtils under Win7-64. I had to
do a reinstall of Win7 and having problems to get the parallel port to work.

I tried the vista drivers and the Win7 (from Rosewill) and both give
me the same results. The problem seems to be related to a missing
Microsoft PCI Multi-IO Controller driver. On the new install it shows
up as fl;agged Unkown driver in and on the device manager. On the old
system it showed as Microsoft drivers:

We like to do a club demo without having the hardware there, just some
prerecorded stuff on a memory stick. The problem is the computer does
not give a demo option in 'Available Radio Interface. We also did the

Has this option be removed?
Is there a way to force it into demo Mode?

The newest version here seems to have the same problem with PL tones not
being filtered out on receive. Did I miss a setting somewhere or is
this a bug? They are annoying on receive.

Did you try using the 10-band EQ to knock down the audio spectrum below
250Hz? Yes, I know that is a hack but it might make it tolerable.

No I have not. It likely would work. However I think a Flex could do
better then that. It only should filter out the particular PL tone
rather then a large frequency range to maintain quality base tone
reproduction. Also I don't like to having to use different receive
profiles for FM repeaters with and without PL tones. It becomes messy
at best. It would also give Flex an edge up in clarity. I don't think
it would be hard to implement.

I just checked and found that all of my VHF / UHF memories would not
function after the upgrade. They were there and I could select them, but
each time I got a message about the VFO freqs being incorrect.

I only had a dozen local repeaters entered so I just used the memory screen

in each row during the delete.

Now I can enter new memories and everything works fine again, including the
CTCSS.

2012-09-21 Thread John Vandenberg
The newest version here seems to have the same problem with PL tones not
being filtered out on receive. Did I miss a setting somewhere or is
this a bug? They are annoying on receive.

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 83, Issue 13 More Zombie Ports Here

2012-03-13 Thread John Vandenberg

I have been trying to help a friend with his zombie ports.
They originated from not uninstalling the ports in vspMGR before
upgrading to the latest version. They now also keep coming back. His
system is Win7-32 bit.

Like some clarification on the final solution. Was this to as David did?
(Installed VSPE and works perfect no timeouts all day.)

Or is it more then this? Do I have to uninstall vspMGR? ??

I've tried everything to get vspMGR to work and not time out. Thanks to Jim KJ2P who
alerted me to Zombie ports Nothing I do completely deletes the Eltima ports
from Win 7 64 bit. You delete ports from vspMGR (Ran as admin) they don't go away. You go
into control panel and uninstall the drivers. They disappear from the device manager.
Next reboot they are back. Then you uninstall the ports again and next reboot they are
back with the yellow exclamation mark.

This is not an indictment of vspMGR or Eltima. Most likely the blame lies with
Win7 64 bit and of course it could be operator error but I usually find my dumb
mistakes within a day. This has gone on for over a week. Once I find out why
those ports have 9 lives I'll try vspMGR again.

Installed VSPE and works perfect no timeouts all day.

Thanks to all who helped and recommended VSPE.

Dave, did you try uninstalling them from device manager? It would seem
that might kill 'em.
Or maybe something is saved somewhere down in the bowels of VSPMgr.
Maybe if you uninstall the whole VSPMgr and all its ports, erase its
directory in Roaming, and start over they won't come back.

They are coming from somewhere, and somewhere has to be either a file
or a registry entry. I'd think those had to be created by VSPMgr, not
by the OS. If it's a registry entry it's naturally harder to find it
and kill it, but one way or the other there has to be a way.

Re: [Flexradio] Macro ZZTH04000; problems. (Bill Diaz)

2012-02-14 Thread John Vandenberg

Thanks Bill,
Looks like you get the same results with your F-1500. The high cut-off I can
set is also 3650Hz. Wonder if Dudley or Tim could comment on this if this is a
limitation of the F-1500 or PowerSDR. I was getting into this when I was
trying to setup a MaCRO for Win-Warbler which handles a 4khZ spectrum. It
looks like the maximum bandwidth on TX is 3650Hz.
Correct me if wrong please.

John,
I have found that the Flex CAT documentation is not all that
accurate. Some commands don't work as documented or return unexpected
results.

According to the ZZTH command as documented in
CAT_Command_Dictionary.pdf, sets or reads the TX Filter High setting
within a range of 00500 to 2;

The documentation indicates you get get the current ZZTH setting by
sending ZZTH; My Flex 1500 returned ZZTH03100; . This corresponds to
the the Transmit Filter High value of 3150 found on my Setup, Transmit
tab.

If I try to enter 2 as a TX Filter HIgh value on the setup,
Transmit tab, it drops back to 3650.

Sending ZZTH2; to the Flex1500 gets no response. Sending
ZZTH04000;, ZZTH03000; etc gets no response. It is either broken or
mis-documented.

The ZZTL; command for setting the TX Filter Low exhibits the same
behavior, you can read it but you can't set it.

These results are not all that surprising based on my experience
with the PowerSDR CAT commands. It appears that the commands get
documented, more or less, but it also appears that nobody ever tests the
commands to see if they actually work.

[Flexradio] Trouble playing back the recorder spectrum

2012-01-30 Thread John Vandenberg

I tried this on both F5K and F1.5K and get same results

Spectrum Recording procedure
- Click 'Wave' on the menu (in PWRSDR) to open the Wave Panel
- Set TX Gain 0 dB
- Click 'Quick Rec' button to start recording (turns Yellow)
- Click the 'Quick Rec' button again and it stops recording (turns White)
- A message pops up telling you the location and file name.
(SDRQuickAudio.wav)
Note: if you intent to keep the recording make a copy ASAP before doing
a new recording since it will be overwritten

Playback of the Frequency Spectrum
Open the 'Wave' panel
Click 'Add' on the Play-list
Browse to the recording of interest and click 'Open'
The file will be added to the playlist
Hit the 'Play' (or Quick Play) button in Playback to play the spectrum
back. (button turns Yellow)

Description of problem
- see a something like a double sideband displayed in the spectrum
display. Could this be the I/Q signals?

- I do not see the spectrum display I saw when I was recording
- when I tune to one of these (side-bands??) I hear the station that the
rig was tuned to while recording

Question
 - What is the problem?

John, here is my setup for CW-Skimmer.

Of course, the first thing to do is get DDUtil and VAC set up and working,
as you must do in any event with any Flex installation.

On the DDUtil RCP screen, I have RCP2 set to a virtual port whose other
side connects to CWS (more info below). On that same screen, connect CWS to
a different virtual port.

Then on CW-Skimmer settings (ViewSettings), go to the Radio page and
choose SoftRock-IF, 48 Khz. Set CW pitch to 600 and Audio IF to 9600 Hz.

On the Audio page set soundcard driver to MME, Signal Device to the VAC
line that is connected to PSDR's audio OUT, and Audio device to the VAC
line that is connected to PSDR's audio IN.

On the CW-Skimmer CAT page, click Use Radio 2 (TS-2000), then press
Configure. Under Configure, set the port to the other half of the RCP port
mentioned above.

I don't claim this setup is the only one possible, but it works great for
me.

In particular, it allows you to see both VFOA and VFOB when working split.
This is really the whole point of CW-Skimmer, is to figure out which guy in
the pileup the DX station is listening to. Of course, you need to have
tuning wheels for VFOA and VFOB -- mouse tuning in a split DX pileup really
leaves you at a hopeless disadvantage to your competitors. I use the
Hercules interface to control PSDR; again, I don't claim it's the only way,
but it works great for me.

Good luck with CW-Skimmer -- it can be pretty helpful in a big pile.

73,
Tony KT0NY

[Flexradio] Preamp and VAC on F-1500 and F-5000

2011-10-31 Thread John Vandenberg
When using WSPR with VAC I find the behavior of the PRE-AMP on the F1K5
confusing. If I add +10 dB in the pre-amp the VAC Out signal going to
WSPR increases also 10dB. This does not happen on the F5K were the S/N
ratio slightly changes (when I turn the preamp or off) but not the VAC
out level.
Is this correct operation on the F1K5? I always believed the pre-amp
should only effect the S/N ratio.

I would like someone knowledgeable on the subject to comment.

   2. Do a quick check on 20m see what the band is like
   3. When back on 80M hit PTT to talk to budy.
   4. Radio goes beserk, due to RF (Oh I forgot the ATU @#$!!!)
   5. May have to restart PWSDR and tune up on 80m with ATU again.
   6. Have to explain (again) to budy why I disappeared.
   7. He (and myself) are not impressed why it does not remember the ATU
   settings by band.

Could Flex readdress the problem again

[Flexradio] Memory form select not working properly

2011-07-31 Thread John Vandenberg

Although I do not fully understand your statement Since I use RX1 with

VAC for digital stuff I am out of luck! Can you explain this in more
detail?

It means for me that I cannot make use of the panel since I have to use V/U
on RX2.

(RX1 is the only receiver that will work with VAC for my digital programs)

May be a collum could be added on the memory form specifying the receiver
RX1/RX2?

The select gives an error when you are using RX2 for V/U. (cannot use UHF
on

RX1+ UHF on RX2)
It seems to work only for RX1. Since I use RX1 with VAC for digital stuff
I

am out of luck!

Any plans on a fix so it will work for RX2 as well?

This is a consequence of the memories only updating RX1 and having RX2
on the same V/U band as the memory channel designation.

Charlie,

Running PowerSDR in virtual machine environments is not supported.
Running real-time audio applications in a virtual environment is
difficult at best due to the inherent latency of the layered
environment. You can however run PowerSDR in iMac hardware using Boot
Camp. There are several wiki articles regarding its setup.

I wonder if there's a way to make the ATU come on by default?

One of the features I really like about my IC-746 is I turn on the
tuner and it is there for all the bands and when you key up it jumps
in and tunes if the SWR's have gone out of tolerance.

With the habit formed, now I have trouble remembering to click the ATU
each time I change bands with the Flex3000

[Flexradio] Remembering ATU setting by band

2011-03-04 Thread John Vandenberg
With RC1 I don't see that the ATU when checked on a band is remembered when
I switch bands. I normally had the ATU on on 80M and off on the other
bands. Now if I turn ATU on 80, then switch to any other band and come back
to 80M the setting is gone. Also when exiting PSDR and later reloading it
the setting is gone. Has this operation been changed or am I dreaming??

[Flexradio] More V/U on F5K power meter questions (John Vandenberg)

2011-02-01 Thread John Vandenberg

To bad the swr /power meter is not build in on the V/U addon.

Another question:
Is any other way possible to add it? May be by using a mutilexer in front
of the existing A/D for use of power metering?

If we have to have an external solution:
Question:
Are there any other SWR heads (low cost) with USB hookup (could be without a
display) and feed the info into PWRSDR (Virtual com) for processing and
display it in the regular meter display. The pickup could be hidden under
the table and we don't need more deskspace. May be if not already done may
be a small project could be made with a small pic or other processor.

Since in the past we sometimes had power out problems in the beta

If the above realy is the case I like to know if it would be possible

be a worthwhile option to have and be prefered to an external meter any

I have been using EasyPal with SDR-1000 and now my Flex-3000 for quite a

When you select the DGU and DGL modes is the front microphone connected
muted on the Flex-3000? I don't want to be broadcasting my crappy guitar
from here in the shack. ;-)

Yes. Unless you select the Setup-Audio-VAC option to make the mic
active *and* you use the PTT circuit (hard wired) to key the mic.

allows you to make some (com) port selections.

Questions:
- does ROS work under Win7? (there was no option in install to try

Is this correct?

[Flexradio] Warnings with Multiband antennas on Field Day

2010-07-01 Thread John Vandenberg

Here is my FD experience:
Had prepared a muti-fan dipole antenna (paralled dipoles with single
feedline) for 40-20-15-10-6m and tested it at home suscesfully with the
F5Ka.

Problems on Field Day:
Since we were A4 (4 HF stations) we had other stations nearby. I
experienced a lot of baseline-noice pumping (abt.20-25DB) due to overload
from the 40m phone station. (we shared the same tree (on one side) as a
ty-point for our antennas. The antennas were on right angles. However I had
expected this and figured I could just get on another band away from the
40m. However I had the same baseline pumping on 20-15-10 and 6 meters. As
it turned out I could not work any band.

After a lot of head scratching I figured out the problem. Since all the
fanned dipoles share the same feedline, the 40m overload on the front end
was still present at the antenna terminals of the F5Ka no matter what band I
operated including 6m. So the solution was to dump the Fanned Dipole.

I replaced the the multi band antenna with a single band 20m dipole and had
no more overload problems. I started to work PSK31 low in the band and had
no problems, even that a 20m phone stations was transmitting nearby (same
tree shared) about 180KHz higher in frequency. However the joy was only one
sided. It did not take long before the owner of the Icom 756 Pro-III ( the
20m phone station) came over to complain about interference. He now
experienced the baseline pumping on his rig.

Since he ran 100W on transmit and I was doing 75W I concluded that that the
Flex 5K had a superior front end.

Anyone having any specs on these rigs for dynamic range to back this up?

Moral of the story:
Do NOT use a multi band antenna on FD unless you are working by yourself
far away from other transmitting stations!

This is well discussed in some other forums, but you will find that
Skype does have the most reliable connection, especially if you tell
skype which port is open through your firewall (no, this will not make
you a supernode if you do this). I only have a 1M connection at my
remote base, and the audio is always as good as I can ask.

Ipsound is via buggy and does not handle NAT traversal well 100% of the
time. Last time I sniffed it, it was leaving ports in strange states.

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer on this point.

Previously you had to use Skype or IPsound (I have used both) to make

[Flexradio] Win7 intermittent bad DPCs

Under WinXP I used Rattv3 from Microsoft to trace the offenders. Is
there a similar program for Win7 ?

May be our Neil guru may know?

2010-03-05 Thread John Vandenberg
Have been trying to backup the system here with Acronis 2009 home

WinXP-pro. After restoring it will not boot anymore. Anyone having

[Flexradio] Profile and profiler questions

2010-02-18 Thread John Vandenberg
I am confused what profiler does. Also what are the items that are
stored in them. I see there is the TX-profiles you can create. Will they
save things like rx/tx filters, modes etc? Also how do they fit in with
what SDRDataTransfer does?

[Flexradio] Macro request for VAC driver

2010-01-31 Thread John Vandenberg

Not sure how to petition the programmer for this. Bob Tracy

Background
To switch from one mode setup to another when settings are involved,
BandWith, Frequency etc becomes tiresome after a while. To help in this
I use Macros in DDUtil. Some are straight forward such as MMSSTV and
EasyPal which I have implemented. However to add DRM mode (using
Dream.exe) I need to change the VAC driver. There is currently no Macro
for this. When changing the driver in PowerSDR manualy with Setup the
VAC channels change as well. There are no Macros for these eighter that
I could find.

Other digital Modes such as WSJT need these abilities as well..

When properly setup changing from one mode to another becomes very
simple. Just clicking the Macro button.

I am sure many other users would benefit from these macros as well. The
FlexRadio would likely be the most Flexable radio around. hihi

[Flexradio] DDUTIL controlling an antenna switch

2009-12-31 Thread John Vandenberg
I am building a simple remote antenne switch and want to control it with
DDUTIL. The hardware consists of a modified Ameritron RCS8-V (5
position antenne relay and control box). In the control box I added
optoisolators and drivers for the relays. The interface uses an LPT port
on the computer going via a cable to the control box.

I want to find out how to setup DDUTIL to send bits to the control box.
There is no translation to BCD required. Bits 0 to 4 select ant1 to
ant5. There is one extra bit 7 to enable the old Drake L4B AMP.

Also need to find out how to read the HF band on PowerSDR and send the
corresponding bit to the control box.

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Audio problem

2009-12-23 Thread John Vandenberg

For my 2 cents worth...
It has happened to me also, but with the F5Ka. I did just a PWSDSDR stop and
start to recover from the scratchyness.

Also using Win7 32 bit latest official software and driver.

Note: It only happened once and I have the radio on all the time (24hrs) and
the driver got updated about 2weeks ago. My gut tells me it is the new
driver doing it.

[Flexradio] Multi Receive and VAC Settings

2009-12-01 Thread John Vandenberg

Using Flex5000A ( no second receive)

How do I setup Multi Receive with VAC ?

I want to run EasyPal on 14.233 and MMSSTV on 14.230

When I setup Multi Receive I get one channel on the Left and the other
on the Right in my headset.

I have MMSSTV physically hooked up with an audio cable to the sound on
the motherboard, since it does not support VAC.

Now I want VAC to setup eighter the Right or the Left, but not both.

Any suggestions appreaciated.

[Flexradio] Which Firewire card to buy..

2009-09-27 Thread John Vandenberg

Finally my new

StarTech PCI1394MP PCI FireWire Adapter Card - 4 Port$33.99

and installed it in the Asus M2A74-AM motherboard. (see earlier thread)
It did not make a difference. I am still getting long DPC and hangups on PWRSDR.
Then I read a note that the TI chipset driver needed patch
WindowsXP-KB958149-x86-ENU.exe (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958149)

I installed the patch but it made my system useless. (be aware!!)

I will have to restore and try something else

Looking for any suggestions... (specially from Neil)

2. StarTech PCI1394MP PCI FireWire Adapter Card - 4 Port$33.99
3. StarTech PCI1394_2 2-Port FireWire PCI Card with Digital Video

What would you recommend.

[Flexradio] Explorer DPC's and Sata IRQ problem.

2009-09-11 Thread John Vandenberg

Here is my promised update:
It turns out the Bios update did not make much difference in the DPC/hang
problem. The problem shows when using the file browser or loading programs.

I also disabled the Cool and Quiet setting in the Bios.
I am using SP3 and don't run an anti virus program.

Cannot find the IRQ for the Sata hard drive. Anyone found it?

What should I try next?

Today I flashed the Bios (was VER: 0206) to V0601 and just started to

second time loading the program and it hung again. After this it
appeared stable (much more than before). I did some Explorer browsing

MMSTV and will give an updated report later.

John,

There are several things you can try. First off, contact Neal directly. He
may have an immediate fix for that system.

Second, update the motherboard drivers, chipset drivers and the BIOS. Some
mobos had bad DPC problems until a BIOS update was done. You may have to
contact ASUS and tell them about the long duration DPCs.

Turn off disk indexing or Microsoft Search 4.0.

Make sure that the power management settings are set for max performance.

Good luck finding the culprite.

What bios version are you using? The latest is 0601. You also need to modify
all of the services that I mentioned in my email a while back (seach the
archives and see if you can find it).

To completely tune it, you can follow the tweaking tips at
www.tweakhound.com.

I spend about an hour building a system and about 3 hours tweaking,
installing and configuring all of the software.

[Flexradio] FlexRadio Profiler

2009-08-18 Thread John Vandenberg
I installed the program (V1.06 beta SVN3317) but it gives me an error
config file not found. Apparently it is looking for config.xml.
Were do I get it or create it?

Note: Earlier it also was looking for 'profiles.xml' which I downloaded
and put in the FlexProfiler directory. Was this the right thing to do?

[Flexradio] DRM and Flex Part II

2009-08-08 Thread John Vandenberg

I Cannot find it in my Dream (V1.6.1cvs). Also Sound card selection other then
FlexRadio audio does not seem to work at all.

CI began broadcasting at 2100 UTC on 9.8 mHz today.

I am using the SDR1000, so those of you with the SDR5K or SDR3K will need to share your successful settings.

My settings: (DRM Program)

Sound Card Selection Sound In M-Audio Delta 44 Multi
Sound Card Selection Sound Out M-Audio Delta 44 Multi

My settings (SDR1K)

Mode: DRM or SAM
VAC: None

AF: Mute Enabled
Filter Width: 10 kHz

I've uploaded the DRM files and a current .pdf Sked of DRM programs for the use
of Flexers here:

http://tinyurl.com/flex-DRM

Incidentally, I typically have 40 processes or more, going at the same time, including the Flex console. CPU usage averages 20% or less. I never have any glitches in the performance of the SDR1K, or computer crashes running WinXP on a Windows box running at 3G, with 2G RAM.

Flex Process Priority is set to High. Flex Audio Buffer is set to 1024 with sample
rate of 48,000. DSP Buffer is set to 4096 and 2048 for Phone and Digital. Windows was optimized
using instructions I found in the Knowledge Base. Good luck.

The data for the decoded audio is in the Main Service Channel (MSC) which is
the far right led on the opening GUI. It must be on to hear any audio.
Under sound card selection in dream, sound out normally is your PC's
sound card (i.e. connected to your speakers). You only need VAC for audio
IN to dream (vac cable 2 for sound in).

Try taking it off VAC and reconfigure to use your internal sound card.

Tnx Brian. I have downloaded and installed the program. I noticed I have
to start Dream before starting PSDR or it will abort (F5K). Under
settings I selected FlexRadio Audio for both Input and Output. Not sure
if that is correct or do I have to setup a VAC? Went to 9.405Mhz to
listen, but there was no transmissions. Is there a schedule?

[Flexradio] DRM and Flex
The program works great. Put PowerSDR/5000A into DRM mode and decodes much
better than SAM.

I have DREAM receiving Vatican Radio on my 5000 at 9.755mhz in PSDR DRM mode.
The DREAM display level is about -15db, the display on the left says Vatican
Radio 14.48kb EEP AAC+ Mono. The box on the right side has various changing information.

However I never get any audio. The same goes for TDP at 9.790.

In the settings box sound in is virtual cable 2 and sound out is virtual cable 1.

Anyone have any thoughts as to why I am not getting any audio?

Thanks

Zack

Here are the files (attached) needed for decoding DRM. They were once readily
available online, but, I've noticed it's difficult to find them with a simple
search, so I uploaded them for Flexer's convenience at the URL below. This
program is for Windows, and it works well with the SDR1000, Win XP Pro, Flex
PowerSDR 1.18.2, on a 3 gHz, Pentium 4 single core machine, 32 bit, using 2GB
of RAM.

http://tinyurl.com/mcrwmq

I listen to DRM on the Sackville, NB relay of Radio Canada International on 9.8
mHz. You'll recognize DRM because it sounds like digital hash (white noise) and
it looks like a 10 kHz wide, flat-top, digital signal in the Flex panadapter.

Unzip the DRM files into a folder called DRM and click DRM.exe which will open
the program.

Tune in the DRM signal with your Flex radio. I have the best results using the
SAM mode with a 10 kHz filter, centered on the DRM signal. Set up your
soundcard to decode the signal in your DRM program preferences. If the signal
is strong enough, you should be able to decode the DRM signal. When using my
SDR1000, I mute the Flex Console. It takes quite a bit of signal (-75 dBm or
more) to decode DRM successfully.

Good Luck!

Brian

[Flexradio] VOA broadcasting DRM

2009-08-04 Thread John Vandenberg
What do I need for running DRM on the F5K? The DRM shows we need
external software! You mentioned DREAM software. What version and how
to install it? Are there regular test times and frequencies? Any DRM
going on on the Ham bands?

VOA and HCJB ran a demo earlier this evening (Monday night 0100 to 0400 utc) broadcasting DRM (digital radio mondiale). VOA had a whopping big signal out here in the Midwest on 9405kHz. Included in the broadcast was a second service, a multimedia slideshow. I decoded 25 pixs. With the 5000A and Dream software, the audio was superb. Did anyone else catch the broadcast?Doug Levin (show host) was playing American Gold - first ten years of Rock-n-Roll. I believe, since this was the -first- DRM broadcast by the VOA. Perhaps, we'll see and hear more DRM from them in the future.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR high number of Page faults

2009-05-05 Thread John Vandenberg
I am puzzled by the high number of Page faults I see when I monitor
PowerSDR in WinXP-Pro SP3 (32 bit). There seem to be around 2600 of
them a second continues. The total count advances by that same amount.

The radio Flex5000
PowerSDR v1.18.0
Driver 3.4.0.5254 (48Khz, 512 buffer, Safe Mode 1
Mobo M2NPV-VM, 4GB, AMD, 2x 5200+

Occasionally high DPC's causing PowerSDR to freeze and requiring a
Stop/Start

Anyone having the same problem?

[Flexradio] Flex,Vac and Easypal

2009-02-09 Thread John Vandenberg

Tnx Jim...
I am still confused. Do you recommand setting EasyPal under Setup/Soundcard to
the same VAC settings as Ham Radio Deluxe/DM780 ?

When I just install EasyPal and don't configure it I can monitor both
DM780/SSTV and EasyPal. As soon as I try setting EasyPal to RX=Vac1 and TX=Vac2
(your setup) EasyPal stops monitoring. BTW using 07/FEB/09 version.

On the FLEX I have VFO A set at 14.230 and VFO B at 14.233 so I only need to select
the AB button to change frequency. Both SSTV and EASYPal are already running

To John... All I am doing is, when I use EasyPal..I use the rx is the output from PSDR (ie: =vac 2 is input in PSDR and Vac1 is Output in PSDR) and the Output of EasyPal is the input of PSDR... IF PSDR is: Input Vac2 and Output is Vac1 then EasyPal is RX=Vac1 and TX=Vac2 . Do not expect to see the txmitted signal on the easypal waterfall. Hope that helps.
KJ7S Jim

I installed EasyPal, but I am not clear if I need to add more virtual
cables. At moment I am using Virtual Cable 1 and 2 for HRD.

Any help will be appreciated.

The sync problem in HRD / DM780 has been resolved. I have purchased and
installed the commercial version of the VAC and now the sync problems
are gone.

Tnx Bret and Ted.

[Flexradio] Problem updating firmware and upgrading PowerSDR

2008-12-03 Thread John Vandenberg
After downloading and burning the image (went normal) I did a hardware
reset (removed power for 3 min) and rebooted the computer. Then I
verified the driver settings 97Khz / 1024 buffer. When I started the
new PowerSDR 16.0.1 it did the recallibrate and continued loading the
program, but then abruptly stopped with an 'Error firmware version' a
firmware change required (looked 1.3.0.0 but found v 1.2.2.8)

Note: the readme file in the downloaded package indicated that it was
the 1.3.0.0 version.

How can I verify the download?

Could the wrong binary be inclosed in the package?

Any Ideas?
