You should be able to formate them for the Mac using ZipTools. Unless
they were Mac formated at the factory, they usually come in DOS or a
cross platform DOS/UNIX format that's readable by pre-OS X Macs and
PCs... you can read/write to that formate but not run first aid/disk
recovery programs on those disks.
You usually need to find a Windows machine to formate (deeper than
initialize) the Zip disks in DOS.

When you look in Disk utility you see the device and the volume.

For example, if I fire up Disk Utility I see:

37.3 GB Prolific PL3507 Combo device
Pocket Rocket

That's my 2.5" Firewire external drive. "37.3 GB Prolific " is the
device, "Pocket Rocket" is the volume on that formatted device. I can
change the format of DOS formatted devices, but not DOS formatted
volumes.

If it were DOS formatted, and I select "Pocket Rocket" all I can do
is reformat it as MS DOS. If I select "37.3 GB Prolific..." I can
select Mac HFS+ or any other supported format.

That said, DOS formatting is likely the most useful, since it's then
readable on multiple plateforms, and HFS+ doesn't get you anything
more on a 100MB disk.

Something that might prevent this problem in the future (or for
others) is to give the adapter connector a quick shot of WD40 or the
like. Pismos are notorious for tight adapter connections, and this
solved it on my second Pismo. First Pismo was solved when I tripped
over the adapter cord and launched it (Pismo) into space - landing on
a concrete floor. Only damage was the adapter connector was now much
easier to insert!

To prevent unintended 'launches', you can run wires (charger,
ethernet, etc) from laptop, then around the leg of table it's on (2
or 3 times is better) or other solid object before crossing floor
etc. Then if you trip, worst can happen is you rip the wires out of
the wall or adapter. Much better than dropping laptop.

Have access to the new style power supplies, and believe there was an

Re: Pismo Power Jack

The 12" PowerBook has a 45W supply. The iBook 12" does as well, and
the 14" one (I think, I only have a 12" PB).
The 65W adaptors work fine on the 45W machine - they both supply 24
volts, and should be just the same.

Laurent is correct on this one. The G4 PowerBooks use a 65W power
supply, compared to the 45W supply of the G3 series. The voltage is
the same 24V, though. I'd advise keeping on with the YoYo, but that's
just me.

The early G4s were 45W, as are all the iBooks AFAIK.

Wattage isn't critical here, the adapter which can supply 65W will
work fine

with a 45W machine.

Safari and Firefox work on the Pismo using Airport, Mail won't

Both recently upgraded to 10.4.4.

Anybody got any clues as to what is going wrong & how to fix?

I didn't realize that there were so few sold. I was a bit leery of
Powerlogix as I'd read some of the upset customer reports on the xlr8yourmac

not to wait for the just announced 1 GHz G3 chip, but to settle for the 900

It's no longer my primary computer as I bought a 20' iMac G5 1.8 a year ago
for more screen space. But I just took it on the road for a couple of weeks
and it did just fine although I was really wishing that I'd bought the damn

Pismo upgrades: The BlueChip G3 900 MHz

2006-02-10 Thread Geoffrey Peters

Well ... some things just never cease to amaze me.

Does anyone here have the incredibly good fortune to own the very
rare PowerLogix "BlueChip G3 Pismo 900" (yes, that's right, the
sexiest machine Apple ever made can run at 900 MHz) CPU upgrade?

No?

Want one?

Well, ya can't have one. Unless ... read on!

It seems that when the lovely lads at OWC 'absorbed' PowerLogix (whom
I swear made *THE* best CPU upgrades ever -- Sonnet make shite, by
comparison) they merged their CPU upgrade lines, and the only Pismo
upgrade they kept was the NewerTech G4/500 (PPC7510).

BOOO!!! B *much raining of peanuts and hissing* BOO!

Charles Moore mentions the launch of the BlueChips in his MacOpinion
colums
http://www.macopinion.com/columns/roadwarrior/04/04/13/index.html
with a 900 MHz (750FX) and 1 GHz (750GX) available back in late April
of 2004. Obviously *some* of them made it out the door, because
Charles has one, and at least one person bought *two* because he's
selling one on eBay: http://tinyurl.com/cp5hs ... and interestingly
enough, the seller's upgrade features a third chp, the low(er) power
750GL.

Man, my chin hit the floor, bounced four times and ran out the door screaming.

Now, I can kinda understand why OWC decided to not continue the
BlueChips, seeing as they already had the Newertech stuff, and the
fact that the BlueChip 900 was US$349 against the NewerTech G4/500 at
US$279 ... but *SURELY* when they took over they brought in whatever
remained of the BlueChip kits!! If so ...

Hands up all you Pismo addicts who'd like another crack at the
world's fastest Pismo upgrades? I know *I* for one am prepared to pay
the premium, who's with me? Shall we petition the lovely lads at OWC
with a last-chance group order?

Re: Value of a Pismo?

2006-02-09 Thread Geoffrey Peters

Stardate 060206.08:21 -0800. A subspace message from R. P. Bell reads:

Thanks for all your input, most heartening :D

On #1, the scuffed rubber and chinks around the edges will hurt value, but I
still think you are in the ball-game with my estimate. The single
bad pixel is

only marginably problematic, but a buyer will try to use that as a bargaining
point ("what else is going wrong with it?").

Mmm, somewhat expected.

Have you thought of taking the best of each (screen from #2, plastics from the
best, even if you have to mix parts, etc.) and make one sterling machine?

Apart from moving the LCD assemblies over, I already have tried to
'max out' Monolith as best as I can, Pismo 2 took the 'leavings'.
(Actually, there was a third Pismo machine in the equation, but that
ended up with the somewhat daggy sticker-fested casing that I
mentioned in an earlier post, an intact but very dull screen, and the
*real* left-overs ... but I did offer the tech who assisted me any
pieces left over, working or not, and I heard back from him tonight
that he'd found a 400 MHz CPU and 128 MB of RAM, and had already made
a poor uni student very happy with a small 'desktop' Pismo computer
for A$120 -- a win win situation all round :))

As for the single stuck pixel, I didn't notice that until I was
giving it the clean-down (being stuck on blue-white means it blended
in very well to the default Aqua desktop), and frankly, I don't think
it is very obvious unless you go looking for it, or try to make it
display red :). Besides, of the two LCDs, that one is the brighter
and less marked of the two.

There was also an AirPort card, but I'm staunchly
anti-wireless-technology so I gave that to my techie-friend (lucky
for him he piped up when he did, I was about to snap it in two). I
wouldn't inflict that toxic-ness on anyone, if they wish to be
suicidal and add one after they buy my machines, that's their choice.

... the keymarks on the screen are NOT permanent, regardless of what
you've been told. I clean them from my Pismo screen about twice a year

How do you do it? The suggestions that hit this list a few days ago
reference products unavailable in Australia.

Do you have original docs?

No, alas. Nor the boxes or anything else, purely what you see in the pics.

Then, the other machine could be parted out ...

Mmm, no, I'm not interested in trying to maximise any return on these
two lovelies, all I seek is some redress for my time and the promise
they go to a loving home :)

I myself have no need for portable computing, and even though both of
them rate faster in CPU and bus-speed than Brutus, my beloved G3/300
platinum minitower (call him 'beige' and I'll curse you ;)), is the
more flexible machine for my needs, and still does virtually
everything I want from a computer these days anyway. I don't game, I
don't watch videos (heck, I refuse to watch TV), I dabble some with
music, and I write a *lot* of text. I bought a Mac Mini earlier this
year, experimented for about three months before I realised I missed
the flexibility the G3/300 gave me, couldn't justify the expenditure
on a machine I was leaving sit idle more often than not, so I sold
it. Got back exactly what I paid for it too :)

And that's despite turning it into a FrankenMini, as seen here below:

http://madchat.tv/apple/frankenmini

The old 630 case was a perfect choice. With the addition of a 2.5"
adaptor and some spare parts, Mimi went from a 1.25GHz/256/40/combo
entry-level model with the pokey 4200 RPM drive, to a speedy little
minx sporting a 7200 RPM Western Digital 8MB Caviar 120 GB and a
Pioneer DVR-109. I never did get to finish her properly, but it was a
fun hack, and as I still have the 630 shell when I come across a Mini
at the right price in the future, Mimi shall be reborn :)

... the TI-Books really scuff up bad and show case damage much
worse than the Pismos, in my opinion.

Heh, no argument there! When people ask me what laptop they should
look at, I always point them to the iBooks. Sturdier, tougher, and
more tolerant of the daily grind than any PowerBook, almost as
flexible, and still the best portable computing dollar you can get
today. The Pismo is, despite what Steve & Jon come up with, possibly
the second-best machine *EVER* to have come from Apple, with the TAM
holding first place. One day I will own a TAM *dreams ...*

Anyway. I've got two Wallstreets' worth of parts here, time to see if
I can get the Japanese-market version going smoothly at 250 MHz ...

Re: Value of a Pismo?

2006-02-09 Thread R. P. Bell
Geoffrey...

I think, given your recent update and the images you supplied, that my original
estimate of cost is very close to what you can expect, as they stand. If I were
you, I'd try to sell them locally (eg. Australia), if only because
international
shipping is somewhat prohibitive. I didn't try to do the math on the conversion
to Australian value.

On #1, the scuffed rubber and chinks around the edges will hurt value, but I
still think you are in the ball-game with my estimate. The single bad pixel is
only marginably problematic, but a buyer will try to use that as a bargaining
point ("what else is going wrong with it?").

Have you thought of taking the best of each (screen from #2, plastics from the
best, even if you have to mix parts, etc.) and make one sterling machine? That
would raise value to US$375-500--maybe even US$525, if it is really and
honestly
"primo" and you have a motivated buyer).

The OS 9.1 system, no disks, is a wash (another reason to rob Peter to pay
Paul). The OX 10.3.2 with distro is good and greatly supports the valuation I
gave, especially for a single machine made out of the best of both. Think
about
bundling all the best: Best plastics/Flawless LCD/768 RAM/40 HD/Good
battery/VST
Zip/Apple case/10.3.2 w-CDs/best AC adapter and cord, all carefully cleaned and
detailed (the keymarks on the screen are NOT permanent, regardless of what
you've been told. I clean them from my Pismo screen about twice a year)--I
say,
that makes a really nice package deal for a motivated buyer. Do you have
original docs?

Then, the other machine could be parted out (even I need another 2.5" drive
(though I would like to have 40 GB or even more), and would consider a 500 MHz
logic, too--and I'm just one of several, I'm sure). Those parts would bring
you
$75-120, giving you about US$100 more than my previous estimates. Personally,
I'd pay more for a primo Pismo than for a 1st generation TI-Book (and maybe
even
for 2nd generation--the TI-Books really scuff up bad and show case damage much
worse than the Pismos, in my opinion).

No argument - why else would OWC still be offering their G4
modification upgrades :)

The Amrani-clad Ferrari gets supercharged, woo! (if I were keeping
one - I don't have a need for portable computing - I would get this
done)

You're probably looking at from US$250 to US$400 for #1, depending
on condition

(especially the LCD; bad pixels really kill the value, as do bad plastics and
keyboard) ...

#1 has got a single stuck white/blue pixel, roughly in the middle of
the top right quadrant of the screen, otherwise it is all good. As I
mentioned, rubber is a little scuffed but intact (no aluminium
showing), and a few wear-marks & scuffs around the corners.
Suprisingly, it has all four feet :)

http://brains.mine.nu/temp/pismo-1-kit.jpg
http://brains.mine.nu/temp/pismo-1-screen.jpg

(I forgot to put the original 10.3.2 disc-pack in that shot ... oh well)

and US$100-200 (max) for #2 (incidentally, can you verify that #2
will boot from the AC adapter?).

This one, the screen overlay has zero dead pixels, but its overlay
has a few key-mark rubbing-spots that are noticable when the screen
is lit. And she runs fine off the mains :) It does have all four feet
mising, though, and a split that runs from the clicker to the latch,
along the botton edge of the front.

Re: Value of a Pismo?

2006-02-08 Thread R. P. Bell
Geoffrey...

Most of us will tell you that, hands down, the Pismo is probably the brightest
star ever put in the notebook sky by Apple. True, they are becoming somewhat
dated, but my PB 2000-400 Firewire is loaded with 1 GB RAM and a new 30 GB HD,
running OS X.3.9 and just keeps on working. The screen is great, the plastics
are almost flawless and the keyboard--after several years of operation--is
still
spot on. Of course, I baby it...and I'll probably take the leap to a new
MacBook Pro in another year or so, but when all is said and done, the Pismo is
just a great computer at a very attractive price point (high $$ for a used
computer, to be sure--especially after 5 years, but then, what PC notebook can
compare favorably to that?).

You're probably looking at from US$250 to US$400 for #1, depending on condition
(especially the LCD; bad pixels really kill the value, as do bad plastics and
keyboard), and US$100-200 (max) for #2 (incidentally, can you verify that #2
will boot from the AC adapter?). If you get an off of US$500 cash for both,
I'd
recommend that you very seriously consider taking it. Shipping from down under
will, of course, hurt US sales value.

Good luck.

I wanted to give you a $ figure but with all things its only worth
someone is willing to pay for it. I find it best when selling items to
look on ebay then look at the used mac sites for a compatible unit.
There in the middle is the value.
I hope this helps I am sure that many list members will give you a $
amount from their experience with them. I can say that a good pismo is
a prize.

Re: adding Classic to Pismo with Tiger, is 9.2.2 better than 9.2.1?

Oh, *hell* yes.

Stability.

OS X will work (after a fashion) with 9.2 and 9.2.1, but it *expects* 9.2.2.

Apply the update, post-haste. Or you will find that you will
encounter far too many error type 10's and 11's when booted into OS
9, and frequent unexplained quits of Classic whilst under OS X.

adding Classic to Pismo with Tiger, is 9.2.2 better than 9.2.1?

2006-02-04 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Following a suggestion I started my Pismo from the OS9.2.1 CD and
installed it on the internal disk (40 Gb one partition).
I had to tell it to save the old system folder but after that It went
through the install like normal.

It still boots in Tiger so I haven't ruined that installation.
I have got the 9.2.1 to 9.2.2 update, is there any benefit to going to
9.2.2 or am I better off at 9.2.1?

I can start Classic now (before I got a "not installed" error).
Now I need to get the Belkin drivers for the USB-SCSI adaptor and see
if I can make it work in Classic.

I'm assuming I need to be in classic when I install the drivers?

Andrew in Ann Arbor
technology is the answer, what was the question?

Re: adding Classic to Pismo running Tiger?

2006-02-04 Thread Howard Katz
Forgive my faulty memory re: which disk here--

To install classic under Tiger, you boot up the accessories(?) disc
that came with the Tiger package (ok--I said my memory was
faulty--it's the disk everyone looks at and figures they have no use
for. :) )

One of the selections there is to install classic--use that and you'll
be all set.

Andrew, you do not need to partition the disk. Just go ahead and

adding Classic to Pismo running Tiger?

2006-02-02 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Hello All

I've been loving Tiger on my 500 MHz Pismo but I want to figure out a
SCSI connection before I sell off the trusty Lombard and the best
solution I've found to date is a USB to SCSI adapter that only runs
under OS9.

So I want to install Classic on the Pismo.
The Pismo has a 40 Gb hard drive with 19 Gb used.
Get Info identifies it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
Can I just install OS9 or do I need to partition the disk first?
If I need to partition can I copy the Tiger installation to my external
Firewire disk, partition the Pismo drive and copy the Tiger
installation back?

Is there a better way?

Thanks

Andrew in Ann Arbor
technology is the answer, what was the question?

Hey, good for you, Geoffrey!

The battery might be dead but you might be able to revive it. You can search
in the G-Books archive as this subject comes out regularly.

BTW, that's the first time I see a quote from Brains of the 'Thunderbirds'!
"Thunderbirds are go!"

Pismo battery woes?

2006-02-02 Thread Geoffrey Peters
I'd been given a Pismo (yes, givem, the last of the truly gorgeous
laptops Apple ever made) but it wasn't going ... it *had* been
functioning, but was then stored (with a full charge) in the bottom
of a filing cabinet for two months before I got my lucky li' mitts on
this G3/500/768MB/20GB beauty with the unmarred case. Sent it off to
get fixed.

The case issue aside (a long story), the battery which was 14 months
old, had been swapped on me by the body repair centre.

It is being recognised, as in under 9.1 the battery appears in the
menubar, but it reads 0 % and there's no lightning bolt. Press the
li'l button on the side of the battery, and the firsyt green LED
blinks a few times.

Is this battery totally scrubbed, or has someone figured out a way to
rejuve these dears?

(btw: I'm now -- Hi!! *waves*)

Yup.

Should be a drive set to Master, and if you use a different drive the front
bezel won't fit.

There is an adapter board on the back of the drive. Under the adapter
is the standard laptop drive connector. I used a Samsung combo drive
from a dell in my wife's Pismo.

Yes, they are all IDE or ATAPI in the case of CD-ROM/DVD drives. Maybe not a
familiar form factor but it should be standard.

How do you know the LG model from any of the others?

On mine, i was definitively able to tell by disassembling the unit.

Using a #0 phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the
plastic flap on the back, then the two insanely tiny screws on either
side of the unit. (notice that the two that go through plastic are
about 2mm longer than the others)

You can then lift the unit out of the carrier. The label is on the
bottom.

2006-01-31 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters

Hi all. I just joined.

I recently came into posession of a broken G3 Powerbook "Pismo". It
seemed relatively complete (no hard drive, no keyboard, no psu, but
cpu, ram, dvd-rom, battery). I borrowed a 3400 from work, and tried
out the pismo with it, but nothing.

I completely disassembled it, down to the power connector, to find
that it had sheared from the board:

http://www.umlautllama.com/gallery/pismo/IMG_0562

so I desoldered, straightned, and reconnected it:
http://www.umlautllama.com/gallery/pismo/IMG_0566

I plugged it all back together, along with a 20gig spare drive I
had, and it gave me the ? Folder. YAY!

I just got done installing OS 9 on a 1 gig partition, and OS 10.2 on
the remaining partition. It all works really well.

(I do still need a shield for the ram/cpu area, keyboard, and power supply)

I just finally found my 10.4 DVD-R, and was about to install that
over 10.2, to find out that for some reason, the DVD-ROM drive (the
stock apple one) doesn't seem to read DVD-R discs... or at least, it
doesn't read DVD-R discs that I've burnt.

Is this a common problem, or am I doing something wrong on my end?

-s

(I've also got a 15" TiBook 500 (Rev A), and my current machine, a
15" AlBook 1.67ghz... which belong to work, but for all intents and
purposes, my machines.)

Nice rework on the sound/AC board.

From what I gather the lombard/pismo DVDs are getting flaky by now.
Luckily, you can replace the mechanisms with a number of other
devices you can find on Ebay. This is a good reference page:

Also on the list of good cards is the Sonnet Aria Extreme, as it also has the
Broadcom chipset, and it's not bad at $70. I have one that I got for my
Lombard, and I'd be using it, except for the fact I'm stuck on 9 at the

I can confirm that the current version of the Linksys wpc54gs card works
fine with the Airport software, no additional drivers required.

Version 1 of wpc54g card also works fine but the Version 2 card does not
as it does not have the Broadcom chipset in it.

The advantage of these cards over all the others is WPA support, the
IOExpert and Orange drivers currently only support WEP.

The DLink usb (DWL-122 from memory) also works, again with no WPA
support, only WEP.

Old fashioned plain ol' dull boring Airport card. Works great in mine.

Pismo hanging

2006-01-29 Thread Tannis Baker
I just bought some new memory (upgrading to 768 from 512 mg) and a combo drive
for my G3
Pismo operating 9.2.2. My relatively computer saavy and I installed it
ourselves using the
laptop's owner's manual - and all seemed to go well.

The combo came with a variety of drivers for pismos operating OS 9 and I copied
the one
that seemed right to my extension folder, restarted and and the drive played a
DVD promptly.

However, after that the computer would not wake up - the screen was black and
made no
noise - without using Shift/option/Command + start button. A little later, it
was still
not waking up but at least made some noise to indicate that it was running -
holding down
the power key alone worked that time to wake it up.

So, we tried zapping the pram and rebuilding the desktop and that solved the
wakeup problem.

But the next problem seems insolvable and I am wondering if anyone would have
any advice.
When waking up it takes a few seconds to go from black to grey and then about
10 seconds
for the open program to show up. When restarting, it flickers in the grey
screen a bit
and then starts to open fairly regularly (albeit seemingly more slowly than
pre-upgrade),
then it hangs on the desktop with the MacHD icon highlighted for about 10
seconds, frozen
and then finally the Startup apps open. (In my case it is Claris Emailer,
stickies and
Mozilla.)

I tried turning off the combo-drive extension (and restarting) but the results
were the
same so now I am wondering if it has something to do with the amount of memory
(> 512
mgs)and 9.2.2.

Thanks for the advice!

Tannis

Did you check that the cable is good? I thought that Oxford chipsets were

I believe that Sarotech FireWire enclosures use Oxford 911 or 912
chipsets. You may have to install the Oxford Java Utility for your

I don't think the problem is with the drive. I would think that the problem
is with the Firewire enclosure. Does that enclosure need external power? I
have one that won't work if not connected to an external source of power.

The blinking light means it is flat.

Getting to 4 lights doesn't mean that the battery is A1, I have seen many
that claim to fully charge but only last ten minutes under load.

Pismo battery revival?

2006-01-29 Thread kaldav

Hello,
I had a Pismo battery that showed four green lights when the button
on the side was pushed.
I let it sit for a few weeks without power and now only one battery
light blinks green.

Is the battery dead and can I revive it somehow?
Thanks.

Remove the cover from the zip then remove the little sticker from the
side of the slot and extend the slot with a dremel.

to stop everything getting in (dust etc) super glue a piece of felt
(color of your choice to the inside of the bezel before fitting) once
fitted and dried use a razor (not the phone type) to cut the slot in
the felt and thats it.

prices of current models, eg: "Pioneer DVR-K05 8X Dual Layer Slim DVD±RW

The one from the Tibook worked just fine right off the bat, but that

I don't know about DVD drives, but I've got an old Toshiba CD-ROM that
I pulled out of my first PC laptop that works in my Lombard. Of course,
I only used it long enough to verify that it works, before I swapped
the stock LG DVD drive back in.

Hi Yes it will it is just a straight drop into the pismo caddy but
the face plate will not fit as it is slot loading. You can make one
easy enough from an old vst zip drive caddy for the pismo.

John,

I use SlimBatteryMonitor as well. In fact, that application is how
I first noticed my problem. What hardware/OS are you using? Some
others with a Pismo have had my same problem. SlimBatteryMonitor
stopped showing the time left, just about when I updated to Tiger.

In fact, after all my testing, I still run it in the Menu bar.

Just hoping for a fix so I don't have to switch to Dashboard every

I've also had very good luck on "dead" Pismos by propping up the
keyboard, pulling the PRAM battery lead (red, black, white wire by
the battery) and powering the 'book on. It should boot fine if it's
just the rechargeable PRAM not waking up after it's long sleep. After
the 'book boots, I've simply plugged the PRAM battery back in and it
charges back up.

Have you been using it regularly? I ask, because I didn't use mine of

I had tried restting the PMU, to no avail. I was lucky, I guess.

My Pismo is dead

2006-01-17 Thread Ryan Lee
My Pismo recently stopped booting up. No life at all. No green lights
on the battery. It had poor battery life but I kept it plugged in all
the time. I've tried removing the battery and swapped power cords with
one I know was working but still no response. What could be the problem
and how can I resurrect it?

Thanks,
Ryan

It is, I've been using one with this symptom in my test rig for about 18
months and it has gradually got worse but is still fine when warmed up.

Replacement second hand LCDs aren't stupidly expensive these days, so
personally I'd hold out until you can't bare it any more and replace it with
one from eBay or wherever.

It is the backlight, you really don't need to worry until it fails,
but when it does you will have serious trouble seeing anything on the
screen. It's sort of like a florescent lamp going bad. Just takes
longer to warm up.

Mad Dog Tom and Lisa Peters <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> have suggested

If I recall correctly, its a failing backlight. It is fixable with

Various upgrades to Tiger screwed up Apple's battery monitor

Re: Fwd: Airport Issues after Pismo set to IRDA

2006-01-10 Thread Barry Muller
Well,

Based on some suggestions I connected the eMac to the
DSL modem directly. All OK. Then I reconnected the
airport, rebooted the base station and he DSL modem
and reset the base station using the eMac. At first
it looked like this did the trick as Internet COnnect
showed that the eMac was connected, however neither of
my browsers could connect to any site - even after a
reboot.

THe pismo was looking for a p/w (which I changed on
the new set up) and then it found the base station and
the internet. THe wierd part is that the eMac and the
Pismo show the same connect time, which they must be
getting from the base station, so what would cause my
browsers on the eMac not to be able to find a website?

Baffling!

I really liked my Lombard, until I got the Pismo, Firewire, the last
requirement for Tiger. They were both 400 MHz models, I can't say I
see a big difference in speed. Bit built in Airport and Firewire have
me on the Pismo over the Lombard laying at my feet. That and it's
dead again, I can't even get a chime.

2006-01-10 Thread Mark Pearson
I'm looking to move up from a 3400c to a Lombard or Pismo and want
your advice as to which to go for, or if there is a significant real
world difference.

I've combed the LEM site and EveryMac, but want more than just specs to go by.

I'd like to be able to surf the web wirelessly, write, and watch an
occasional DVD. I'm comfortable in OS 9, Jaguar, or Panther. I have no
current need for SCSI, and FW is nice, but not necessary. Budget is a
concern

Thanks for your opinions and experience.

Mark

Re: any significance to Pismo screen cable color?

Maybe there really is a difference, and one is a
boy-'book and the other is a girl-'book? :)

Hello,
On a Pismo screen, could anyone please tell me if there is any
significance to the color of the cable that comes out of the screen
to the inverter board. I have seen blue or pink. Got to wondering if
there were certain brands of screens that matched certain inverter
boards better than others.
Thanks.

I have taken apart probably 15 or so and quite a few Lombards, and
there is no difference. Pink and Blue are interchangeable.

Re: which ipod for a Pismo?

2006-01-07 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
I like and use the mini, I have a Pismo 500, it has a gig of ram but
it’s firewire will work most excellent with the mini as your’s will
too. Actually I connected the USB 1 and it works but not shazam like
in firewire. These pismos are so nice, has to rank as the best and
most versital book ever made by Apple. I broke down and finally
bought a new 17” PowerBook, but it sure does not fit like the pismo
does and for writing letters and email, it will be from the Pismo

Have fun

sticky drawer on Pismo DVD drive

2006-01-03 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I've been trying to sort out a Lombard for my father in law and I have
a 6x DVD drive that seems to work OK once you get the drive closed.
The drawer binds as I try and close it, sometimes I have to open it and
clse it several times before I can get it to close all the way.

Once it's closed it works fine.
There seems to be a lot of friction in the slides so either something's
jumped the track or something needs lubrication.
If I can't find anything obvoiusly out of line I'm thinking of a little
silicon lube on the slides.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Andrew in Ann Arbor
technology is the answer, what was the question?

Pismo hard drive- replace with a Toshiba?

2006-01-02 Thread kaldav

Hello,
There have been discussions concerning replacing a Pismo hard drive
and the need for an ATA5 rather than ATA6 drive.
Has anyone tried a Toshiba drive with a multi interface of ATA
2/3/4/5/6 like the Toshiba 40GB 2.5" Super Slimline (9.5mm) HDD
MK4025GAS? One specification sheet said it was ATA6, but the seller
said it was multiinterface. Also, I think it is 4200 rpm. Thanks for
any advice about this drive, or something similar.

One more thing - what do you mean confident, Vicki? This machine has

which

has never worked beautifully if at all.

I have read that they were sometimes troublesome but am now
wondering if

the problem could that be something other than mechanical?

Hi Tannis

You read into the mail to much! I meant that if you were confident
with the take apart and re-assemble your -self.

Nothing more!!

The Pismo i had i kept for the longest out of any G book i have
owned, and only sold it on when i upgraded to a G4 Ti 1GHz.

Oops you are right, Vicki! That was a typo as I was looking at 256mg
prices - but looks like I might be smarter to go for 512 since I have
recently learned that pismos can now go to 1gb. Thanks for the
offer to
help - I am in Canada and have replaced memory before - although
not in

the lower slot!

Tom and Vicki have both recommended buying a drive off of eBay and
fitting it myself but I must say I am leery of some of the work
involved

after reading a link linked to a site sent to me by Tom.

If you can get a slotloader from a newer Powerbook being parted out,
they fit right in; even without the bezel they work pretty well. This
is just a matter of unscrewing the old drive, and attaching the new
one. Slides right in.

Someday I'll dremel out the old bezel to fit it on the new drive.
