I think it is exemplary that such a contributor as yourself could make such public commendation of your peers. The VM community IS exemplary and has been I dare say most of the time you have been involved, and especially in our finest hours of severe challenge. We have and continue to accumulate leaders who understand the importance building community for enabling SHARing and making common cause when such is in everybody's best interest. Even when big battles were lost and the consequences increased our pain, we helped each other make the best possible lemonade. I, too, thank you for your impressive involvement (you may have the major league record for never missing a game!). I as well am not as young as I used to be (duh--to whom is that not applicable?) but I cannot see ceasing to contribute just because my financial support without billable hours is pretty well assured. That is not ever related to my belief that such assurance is invisible to me if it even has a basis in reality, which I doubt. To me retirement means being at liberty to contribute at least 30 hours a week to one or more projects that I would really like to succeed but that cannot afford to compensate me for my effort. This venerable project is one such. Thank you once again for making a big and positive difference and enjoy what you will, knowing the VM community affirms you have earned that plum in spades.

Richard, Thank for all your help over the last 30 years that I've had the pleasure to work with VM. Was VM role at VISA down to just TPF guesting? Seems like you had some applications that WERE running under VM inhte old days. Good bye and good luck, Bob Heerdink (now with IBM)
Re: Moving on
We have 6 LPARs running z/VM 6.1.0 and only one of them does TPF hosting. While TPF hosting is the biggest expenditure of resources in that LPAR, it also has other critical applications. We never have gotten all the way down to just TPF hosting. If you count the several Linux guests that support TPF as TPF hosting, there are still a few critical applications that are running on VM. Of those 6 LPARs, 4 are devoted to m/f Linux. There are also an unknown number of POCs for Linux either in process or in planning. Thanks Marty. I had come to the conclusion that Parkinson was right by observing one of my oldest and best friends. When we had to do this I wrote my own nifty exec TMVS (To-MVS) which uses the VMFTP package. You are welcome to share it. FTP will do it for you; the MPUT subcommand will let you send any number of files. You could specify the target directory as the z/OS PDS, and then use MPUT to send everything at once. I'd try that first; it works when the client is Unix or a PC, although those clients usually have some kind of name-mapping subcommands to help you out. Re: moving members to a z/OS system
I like the FTP answer. I remember solving the same problem in the old days using ISPF on VM. It had a feature for selecting a set of files, like * script a, and transmitting them to the MVS system to be received as a PDS. Re: moving members to a z/OS system
You can send a CMS MACLIB but it arrives as a sequential dataset and it is a bit of a fight to extract the members correctly. I did it once, but it was harder work than an FTP mput (especially with rexx). It shows up in the JES SPOOL and the user can do a RECEIVE command to reconstruct it. The receiver will need to use the RESTORE subcommand to specify things such as the DSN since z/OS cannot handle CMS filenames. This assumes you have an RSCS connection to their z/OS system. I can't remember if it is possible for you to put their data in a CMS MACLIB and transmit that in such a way as to be usable on z/OS. I don't have a z/VM system any more sigh. SENDFILE creates a card image. If you don't have an RSCS link to them, you could send it to yourself. It would then be in your virtual reader. You could read that file onto your CMS disk, then ftp that file - assuming you have an ftp connection available. Or you can ftp it to your desktop in binary mode, zip it, email it to the user, have them save the zip to their desktop, unzip it, then binary ftp it to their z/OS system, then do a RECEIVE INDATASET on the disk file. wow ICCF I used to love ICCF when I was a VSE guy. a long time ago in xedit of a cms file you cam enter set screen 2 and you will get a split screen then you can xedit a different file and have them both on your screen at the same time to compare. Re: Moving on (please don't panic)
Alan, Best of luck in your new position. May it be everything you hope it will be. Your insights and help have been invaluable over the years. As ombudsman, you have been a worthy successor to Lyn Hadley. Fortunately for us you will not be kept in isolation. Has IBM found someone to fill your current position? Hopefully s/he will have 4 feet so that s/he can fill all of your shoes, yours and Chuckster's. There I will be part of the team that helps you, our clients, successfully bring Linux to System z, both from a traditional consolidation perspective, as well as exploitation of System z and z/VM's emerging technologies. I don't make the move lightly or easily, but it serves both my own goals and IBM's. I will continue to reside in Endicott with my friends in Development, I will still annoy them with questions, and I will continue to exert my influence over product plans.
