You may be able to see the mobile hotspot as a WiFi connection, although some
of the ones I’ve seen require using some sort of client application. Your

It would help if you provided some basic information like what operating system
it's running. If it happens to be Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther", you may be in luck.
If not, I'm sure you can locate the corresponding recipe now that you know

Reset OS X Panther password without the Install CD

Alternatively, you can reinstall the OS. (I'm assuming you're referring to a

So all you have is the gray Apple icon and a spinning gear? What version of OS
X? Will it boot from an OS X installer disk?

If it does, run Disk Utility to check the hard drive, if it doesn’t boot from
the installer disk, disconnect everything connected to it (including
mouse&keyboard) and try. You may have a flaky USB device causing an issue.

If that works, plug in the keyboard and hold down the shift key while it
starts, to boot into safe mode. If that works you know the computer is probably
ok, and i was something that was plugged in, or a some program or device driver
that was just installed or updated.

If that doesn’t work, press the Command-V keys immediately to see the verbose
boot screen. A lot of text will flow on the screen, but what we’re interested
is the line where it stops. That could give an indication of the issue.

Re: Help

2016-05-19 Thread coverturtle
Hi all,
This is so very specific that I have not run across this error, so I am
throwing a few things
at the computer. A potential solution that is quick and dirty is to
reinstall the Leopard.
...
BEFORE you reinstall, make sure the hard drives are OK and that the file
system is correct.
You may end up reinstalling the OS - but you should not lose anything
not already lost.
However, it may be critical to establish the healthiness of the hard
drive(s) before you do this.
Check the SMART data on the disk using the disk app. The Smart tests
should show you
something, but if not, check the man page for fsck in the terminal. You
will want to reboot
into the command line mode before executing fsck if you want this
command to correct
any file system problems. Run fsck being careful to heed any warnings
the man page or

OTHERWISE, Some simple physical things to do
If it is very dry where you live or if you are in a dry spell, static
electrical charges may have
accumulated in your computer. To test this, unplug all the connections
and leave the computer
sit overnight. then in the morning, plug the power cord back into the
computer first, then
just the video, keyboard and mouse. Test to see if that fixed it.

If the keyboard and mouse are lacking in function, check the mouse
settings and keyboard settings
of course. Try using the keyboard to drag and drop. Also, run a memory
test.

AFAIK, there is no cool way to diagnose this problem except maybe by
running TechTool, of which a gratis
version should be installed on your system with the OS - otherwise it
may be on one of the install
disks if you have those. However, there is not guarantee that TechTool
will run properly.

Other simple things to check are the external and internal connectors
(USB, hard drives, etc.) and
the proper seating of the memory modules and disk drive cables. If you
have a bunch of USB cables
unplug all but the keyboard and mouse. I have had USB problems with my
G5 Powermac.

the Desktop always starts up with the same window open no matter what. and
Yes, I have closed it and restarted.
Some Applications, like AOL won't start upi. Persistence helps but not always.

Stupid zeroth step: try a different mouse. A mouse with a flaky left button
will produce the “I can start things but not drag and drop” symptoms.

In fact I had that very experience just last week. Suddenly the Finder became
weirdly unresponsive…the trackball pointer moved around, right-click worked,
but I couldn’t click on anything. It was particularly annoying because the
little microswitch was making the same noise and same ‘click’ feel, usually
they’re clearly mushy or no longer ‘click’ when pressed. Replacing my trackball
fixed it. Any three button USB mouse will work properly in OS X.

Can you drag folders around in finder Windows? Ie: is it only your Desktop
folder that’s affected?

First step: Start in safe mode. Shut the Mac down, and hold down the Shift key
while starting up. Keep holding it until the progress bar appears. This deletes
some program caches and such that may cause this behavior. Once it starts up
and comes to the login prompt, you can restart immediately in normal mode.

Second step : Delete Finder and Desktop preferences. Go to your Library folder
(in finder Go > Library), find the Preferences folder and find the files
com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.finder.plist move them to the trash and
restart.

if it persists still, boot from your leopard installer DVD and select Disk
Utility from the Utilities menu and check your hard drive.

If the drive checks out ok, and all of the above have not fixed it, reboot to
your computer, go into System Preferences and create a new Administrative user
account.

Log off and back in as the new user and see if you still have the problems. If
you do, this is something related to the system and re-installing OS X should
fix it.

If you don’t have the problems, then the issue is something with your regular
user account. Re-installing OSX doesn’t fix this; but diagnosing the issue will
taske some detective work.

I have an imac G5, Powermac8,2 running Leopard. Recently it's been acting
weird.
I am unable to move any folders on the desktop, I can open folders, and
launch Applications, but I can't drag and drop anything.
The Desktop picture/background no longer chganges upon restart, before

the Desktop always starts up with the same window open no matter what.
and Yes, I have closed it and restarted.
Some Applications, like AOL won't start upi. Persistence helps but not

There are probably some deeper issues going on but I haven't encountered them
yet.

Any ideas?

Re: Help please: slow iMac

2013-12-24 Thread N. Shani
I'd like to share with the group the final status of the 'slow iMac saga',
kind of year-end closure.

First and foremost, Merry Christmas (to those who celebrate and/or enjoy)
and a Happy New Year.

Many, many, many thanks to all (Jim, Bruce, Valter, Fabian, Clark, Harry,
Dan - very knowledgeable bunch) on your ideas and shared wisdom /
expertise. It pointed me in the right direction.
So, I tried all possible (and limited) trick available to the average user
(me) and had some clues generated.
The Disk Utility with its repair functions worked and didn't find anything
wrong with the HD, but... it took forever to announce so (clue #1: if it
takes ~40 minutes on a 160 GB drive to run the repair functions - each,
that should point to a faulty drive). The next step was to try Onyx, which
again took forever (clue #2) and didn't find anything wrong, so I tried to
reload the OS, which took many hours (clue #3), then downloading and
applying the combo update (clue #4).
At that point I said to myself: let's try booting from the cloned drive and
see how it performs. Booted and the iMac worked like demon, so... internal
HD slow (but functional), external fast - clue? Something is terribly wrong
with the internal, right? Right.
Shop on-line for closest computer shop, jump into car, spend ~$100 (tax
incl.) on a 2 TB HD, take iMac apart (thanks to iFixIt - very clear on how
to do so) and redo the hoopla of the OS install which went like a magic.
iMac is now fully functional, fast and a beauty to use. Thanks, Apple, for
designing a well-integrated PC - it was very interesting to see how they
took meticulous care to address EMC and safety (my fields of expertise),
not to mention how nicely everything was fitted (Windows builders: take
note).

Thanks again,
Naftali Shani

Note that after 10.5-ish (When Apple went to launchd instead of cron to run
these things) Apple runs these scripts when it can after their 'run time' has
passed, like the next time they come up, etc; it's not necessary to leave it on
all night.

I would mention that my first stop when something is going wrong is to look at
the system log via console.app, in fact, it's a good idea to look at it on a
regular basis, just to get a feel for what is normally showing up there.

What you want to keep an eye out is what's happening when the system starts
acting slowly. Also anything marked IO Error should be investigated, since this
is where things like USB device and Disk failure start showing up.

Yea, what Clark said. He's pretty much covered everything I'd reply with. :)

/Library/Caches
~/Library/Caches
There is also one at /System/Library/Caches but I only toss that one
with more extreme problems.

A tool such as AppleJack or OnyX (both free) will take care of
clearing these for you.

In Terminal you type:

sudo periodic daily
sudo periodic weekly
sudo periodic monthly

OnyX is useful here too.

These maintenance scripts are normally run automatically by OS X -
but for it to do so you have to leave your Mac running overnight.
Since they probably haven't been run in a long time, they'll may take
quite a while - so be patient.

 > I'll be happy to learn about your thinking

Think horses not zebras. Do the basics first - general maintenance,
cache cleaning, etc. And check your system.log (use Console.app) for
obvious failures, before jumping to things like HD failures.

Valter mentions AppleJack in his reply. Great tool!...

Note that, in general, AppleJack is an emergency tool, a sledgehammer
for when when all else fails and your Mac won't boot or run normally.
It runs in Single-User Mode (cmd-S held down during boot) - an
environment when very little except OS X's Unix core/underbelly is
running. DO NOT use it for general maintenance.

For general *disk* maintenance, run a Verify Disk pass with Disk
Utility once a month. Also a good idea to do this before installing
Apple stuff.

For general *system* maintenance use OnyX, perhaps once a month or
so, at most, to run the three system maintenance scripts (daily,
weekly, monthly). And if your system is running slowly, use it to
clear the kernel, system, and applications caches. OnyX also lets
you enable some nice "hidden" interface stuff.

The System's caches.
You can try with Onyx, a System maintenance tool (free):
http://www.titanium.free.fr/
(use the Cleaning and/or Automation tab)

With it you can do a lot of maintenance the easy way, without Terminal.

> - Have you tried running the three Apple-provided system maintenance
> scripts? Please elaborate.
You can use Onyx here as well.
(use the Automation tab)

> - Have you tried rebooting into Safe Mode (which clears a bunch of system
> caches), then rebooting normally? Not yet. Will be done when I locate DVD,
You don't need any DVD. See this info:
http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/Safe-Boot.htm

> I realize that this iMac may possibly have a badly fragmented HD
> (considering its age and usage) - could that be the issue in your opinion?
I don't think that could be the issue (also because OSX does some kind of
defragmenting itself). Besides, it would slow down mostly app startup and
disk access, not normal operations.

If the issue it's disk-related, more likely could be a failing or damaged
disk problem.
If you had not already done so, make a BACKUP ASAP.
Just in case. :-)

Something else that could fix several issues (and clean the caches too), is
Applejack:
http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15667/applejack

Its usage is a tiny bit tricky: after installing it, you have to boot in
Single User mode (hold Cmd+s at startup), and when at the prompt you type
"Applejack" (or "Applejack auto restart" to let it do everything by itself).
But I highly recommend it; it's my first step when something looks odd, or
for periodical maintenance.

/Library/Caches

This is in your user folder.

For both of them you can simply toss the Caches folder in the trash.

All you need to do is hold down the shift key during startup. Once it
completes and you've tried a few things to see if it's still slow, you need to
restart to boot it without Safe Mode.

Fragmentation isn't likely a problem, the OS tends to prevent that.

Low disk space can be a problem but you said you had plenty of free space.

Have you run Disk Utility / Disk Verify?

I have had a couple of cases of slowness that was corrected running Disk
Repair. You can't run Disk Repair without booting from another disk but if
Disk Verify shows no problem then you don't need to run Disk Repair.

You can also try running Disk Utility / Permissions repair (booted from the
hard disk in question). It rarely fixes things but when it does it works well.

Dan, all questions are valid, so let me try and expand:

- What *in particular* is slow? Everything. Trying to launch any

I'll be happy to learn about your thinking: I'm not an expert by any
stretch of the imagination but am not afraid to try reasonable things (as
pointed earlier). I've been using Macs for ages (starting with SE/System 5?
in the late 80s, then LC475, G5, MacBook, MacBook Air) and had a good run
with them: none failed catastrophically - usually I kept them long enough
till I could afford a newer version.

I realize that this iMac may possibly have a badly fragmented HD
(considering its age and usage) - could that be the issue in your opinion?
As it is an Intel-based iMac, it is whisper quiet compared to the G5 (I
never heard its fans roar like the G5 or sometime the MacBook).

Re: Help please: slow iMac

2013-11-25 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

All of the other ideas presented are very solid, however the first thing
that I would do is get a copy of "Onyx" and run the tab which shows a
"Hammer" called Automation. Start with the default settings and if that
doesn't speed up your iMac then select all of the items in Automation.

When you are looking for the program "Onyx" be sure to get the one that is
for the release of OS X that you are using.]

Apart from Jim's excellent troubleshoot guide, the only things that comes
off the top of my mind, is possibly some peripheral error (especially USB):
sometimes peripherals act weirdly, this create troubles to the system, but
you don't get any hint.
Thus, try booting your iMac after having disconnected any peripherals - save
for mouse and keyboard, and connect them directly to the USB ports (no USB
hub) - then check if anything has changed.
(BTW, are your mouse and kb the original Apple ones?)

Although unlikely, another cause might be overheating due to dust
accumulation inside the iMac. You could download and test internal temps
with Temperature Monitor (free):
http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html

If you see excessive temps, you could use something like smcFanControl:
http://www.eidac.de/
to run the fans at their maximum speed, hence moving out (some) dust.

HTH,
Valter

FIRST: Do a full, bootable backup of your hard drive. Use Carbon Copy Cloner
(the last, free version can be downloaded from the Bombich software site) or
SuperDuper! Do this NOW while your iMac's hard drive contents are still
accessible.

Since you say your iMac is otherwise running fine, the most likely culprit is
the hard drive, even though yours is only half full. If you still have the
original install DVDs, find the one with "AHT" or "Apple Hardware Test" written
on it, and follow instructions to boot from that DVD. Once booted, run both the
Quick and Extended tests. Make sure you check the "Do not stop for errors" box
so that the tests will run to completion.

The first time through, do NOT let the tests do a full scan of the hard drive.
I suspect the drive will pass the basic tests just fine and you'll get a green
"PASSED" screen each time. But you may get a red "FAILED" notice, with red type
for the failure message. That message likely will be for the hard drive.

Whether the hard drive passes or not, run the AHT again in the Extended mode.
Deselect all tests EXCEPT for the hard drive full scan. Again, set the test to
NOT stop for errors. Let it run, which may take a couple of hours; if it takes
longer, that's a clue which I'll talk about in a moment. This will do a full
scan of the hard drive for bad sectors. It may or may not pass. Hard drives
that are just beginning to have problems with reading and/or writing usually
pass. If the hard drive passes with a green "PASSED" message, that means there
are no bad sectors, but it doesn't mean there are no problems, especially if it
takes a lng time to do the scan as the test tries to resolve slow
read/write issues. A 160 GB HD shouldn't take more than a couple of hours on
your iMac.

If you get red "FAILED" messages, AHT will tell you why, generally. It also
will give you a code or codes, which you may or may not be able to translate
into English after doing a Google search.

At this point, you will have done all you can do with the AHT, but you will
have some insight into the health of your iMac's hardware.

Pass or Fail, here's what I do in cases such as yours. First, I install
SMARTReporter on any Mac that passes through my hands. This simple utility
monitors the Self Monitoring and Reporting Test firmware on each hard drive
installed inside a Mac and shows a green (OK), yellow (failing) or red (failed)
icon in the menubar to alert you to your hard drive's health.

Second, I run Apple Service Diagnostics (in your iMac's case, that is ASD
3S108) in both OS and EFI modes. ASD tests are very extensive versions of those
run by AHT, and often will find problems that the quick AHT tests don't/can't.

Next, I run Drive Genius 3, the utility used by Geniuses in Apple stores. I
boot from the DG3 disk and run the hard drive scan test, making sure to ask it
to reallocate any bad sectors found. Then I run the Disk Integrity tests for
both read and write. The longer the tests run, the more likely you are to find
any problem areas. So don't skimp on time spent as you're not likely to find
any problem areas on the hard drive's media in 5 minutes, or possibly even 30
minutes. I usually do a Sustained version of the read and write tests on a
smaller hard drive like yours, which takes 1-2 hours unless there are
read/write slowdowns.

Finally, if a hard drive has passed all of the above tests, I run two more
utilities. First, with the iMac still booted into the Drive Genius 3 disk, I
select the Defrag button. Even though OS X does a pretty good job of
defragmenting files on the fly, after 7 years your hard drive is probably
pretty fragmented. DG3's Defrag feature will tell you how much and suggest
whether or not you should defrag.

If your hard drive has passed all the tests and has been defragmented, the last
thing to do is to run Disk Warrior, which will find and fix directory issues.
(DW version 4.2 is the right one for OS X 10.6.) It also will find and fix
"volume information" errors, which often are behind hard to pinpoint operating
problems.

If the iMac and the hard drive have been through all of the above, and passed
all the tests and procedures, I then do a PRAM reset (let it chime

Yeah, but I appreciate the remarkably lessened need to do so over the G5's. And
once you go over the weirdness of having to use suction cups to pull off the

Also, even the quad i7's are less of a space heater than the G5's were...

Try holding down the shift key to start in safe mode. If that doesn't work,
start it up holding down the command and V key, this will show all the unix

No it is not; not on a two-year-old one. The disk should have been in the square white
box that had the "manual" and warrantee information. If you got the standard
short wirelss keyboard, this box was at one end of the long box with the keyboard and
mouse in it. It's been a while since I unpacked one with the extended keyboard, but as I
recall it was also in that box as well, or perhaps it was stuck into another slot on the
white foam at the top of the box.

Note this is only helpoful if you're one of the anal types like me who keep all
the original packing materials… :-)

All "mid-2010" iMac models came with OS 10.6.3 pre-installed.

If it is determined that you need to reinstall OS, you can do one of the
following:

(1) Call Apple to order a copy of the original specific OS-install DVD for
your iMac. There will be a nominal charge (~ $17); it will arrive relatively
quickly within a few days.
(2) Order from the Apple Online Store a "retail"(universal-install) OS 10.6.x
DVD:

I believe that they are selling 10.6.3, which should work for your iMac.

No. My 2011 MacBook Pro came with an "OS Install DVD".

Try holding down the shift key to start in safe mode. If that doesn't work,
start it up holding down the command and V key, this will show all the unix
underbelly stuff that goes on…where it stops should tell you what the problem
is.

> I looked for the original install discs and just realized that none came with

No it is not; not on a two-year-old one. The disk should have been in the
square white box that had the "manual" and warrantee information. If you got
the standard short wirelss keyboard, this box was at one end of the long box
with the keyboard and mouse in it. It's been a while since I unpacked one with
the extended keyboard, but as I recall it was also in that box as well, or
perhaps it was stuck into another slot on the white foam at the top of the box.

Note this is only helpoful if you're one of the anal types like me who keep all
the original packing materials… :-)

Hope u can help

2012-11-30 Thread dshep

Hey group
I've got a two year old Imac running snow leopard.
Last night we had some wild weather and lost electricity five times in
several hours. When I booted up the Imac this morning, all I'm getting
is the chime, the apple and a small spinning circle. Jeez I hope it's
not fried.

Any suggestions as to what I might try?
I looked for the original install discs and just realized that none
came with the computer. Is this the norm with the newer Imacs?
I'm sending this on one of my old (2000) green Imac which runs Panther,
and well I might add. I remember that the original soft ware came with
it and all my previous Macs.

G'day to the list.

Some questions regarding Keys predicament.

1. Does anyone live near Kelly, who is able to assist on site?

2. Does Kelly need my boxed copy of Snow Leopard, or can someone in the States
help her with a redundant copy? I don't mind the postage, but don't want her
ending up with multiple copies.

3. Is there anyone with a redundant suitable backup drive (I've unfortunately
already given away to friends and rellies my 3 x 1 TB backups from my previous
iMac).

2012-04-06 Thread Lynn Wegley
Snow Leopard requires a copy of Leopard first in order to upgrade to Snow
Leopard and then on to Lion.
I believe that all Intel machines will up grade to Lion. However, the next OS,
Mountain Lion will not upgrade some of the earlier Intel Macs.

Everything of course should be backed up before doing an upgrade, just in case.

However SOME people are using the iPad without any computer. That would make
it pretty difficult to get the music on to the iPad however. So if that is the
goal, then an upgrade will be required. While iCloud does require Lion, I
believe that iTunes and syncing to the iPad only requires Snow Leopard.

G'day again Madame

I goofed. I've been helping a lady in Australia in a similar predicament, on
the Outback.mac list. I'm busy, so posted and replied in haste.

As I live in Oz, and you in the US, I fear we're a bit far apart. Nonetheless
my offer to send a gratis, legit copy of Snow Leopard still stands, if you want
it.

As to ensuring your music, I would purchase a backup drive and clone a copy of
your existing iMac using CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner,
http://www.bombich.com/download.html ) before updating. Updating should leave
your settings and information intact, but Murphys law can prevail (if something
can go wrong, it will go wrong). As you are updating, I suggest purchasing an
external hard drive at least 1.5 times as large as your existing Hard Drive,
then swap the backup over to the hourly Time Machine backup method found in
Snow Leopard, once you've successfully updated.

Strait debian works better as they have a port already and Ubuntu will be a
little bloated for that model. I have three also which were my kids which
ran OS 9 when they were smaller.

Instead of trying to force OS X on there I reused them in my basement data
center. They make great little linux boxes and are about as speed as my
little netbook.

They are not robust enough to be a linux workstation for me but they get by.

Re: G3 Blueberry --- was: Help! What to do with iMac Bondi G3 Tray Loading 233mhx cpu 256 mb ram

2012-01-25 Thread Jesse Carroll
For Tray Loading iMacs, it might be better to go to Ubuntu 9.04 for powerpc.

All CRT iMacs have slow USB 1.1 ports, so some ideas here won't work as
they need

USB2.0

I have an Early 2001 G3/600 SE Graphite running OS 10.4.11

1GB Ram

80GB 7200 rpm HDD.

It has run Ubuntu 9.04 fine, as has my 1999 PowerBook G3/333 Lombard,

which has to have XpostFacto to run OS 10.4.11.

Re: G3 Blueberry --- was: Help! What to do with iMac Bondi G3 Tray Loading 233mhx cpu 256 mb ram

2012-01-24 Thread Christopher Satterfield
I have a G3/400 iMac, slot loading also, and it feels quite slow to me
running OS 10.2, I just got Tiger disks so I'll run an upgrade sometime
soon, whenever I feel like digging it out of the garage. Mine has a gig of
ram, but then again I also never got to reinstall the OS when I got it so
the original 20 gig drive has like 2 gigs free.

I will tell you though that speed is a matter of opinion. For my mac I
typically use a Dual 2 GHz G5 with 4 gigs ram, and that makes my desktop
running Linux feel slow (2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo with 3 gigs ram).

As for airport, I also noticed that all the adapters seemed to be in China
also. About 2 years ago I got my iMac and I wanted wireless also, but
didn't feel like buying one from China, so I just used an old Windows
laptop with a bad screen (backlight was out) and ran that using Internet
Connection Sharing and a crossover cable for internet, cheap and works,
even more so when you pull the screen completely to save power.

And for ram, mixing is fine, I originally had it running with a 512 and a
128 before I got a 2nd 512 meg chip, both of different speeds and it worked
fine. Just make sure you're not using 66 MHz ram, only 100 and 133 MHz ram.

A good place for parts is the LEM Swap list. I was able to get the airport
card and adapter there for a reasonable price.

I have 3 of these old slot loading iMacs, one with 1GB Ram, 768MB Ram, and
512MB Ram. All are currently running OS 10.4. None of them are "zippy". The
512MB one really bogs down when more than one app is open at a time. The 768MB
and 1GB do seem to be able to handle multiple open apps at the same time, but
again be prepared to be patient.

I don't think any of my Ram cards are matched pairs and I don't have any
problems. I think as long as the are PC100 or PC133 cards you should be ok,
but I'll let others address that more specifically.

Re: Help! What to do with iMac Bondi G3 Tray Loading 233mhx cpu 256 mb ram

2012-01-24 Thread Paul Brown
I've just bought a similar iMac, which is G3 Blueberry 350Mhz slot loading.
I found out it would need an adaptor to install an Airport card and that
nearly all sellers of these on eBay were in Hong Kong or elsewhere in
China, so it would take some time to arrive. There's also the option of a
USB WiFi adaptor, but again nearly all sellers were in Hong Kong, or
elsewhere in China. It wouldn't even recongise a USB 3G dongle modem. I
bought an Ethernet cable from a hardware store, after checking it was the
right type of Ethernet cable and connected to an Ethernet port on my WiFi
router. It currently has 192Mb of RAM and can be upgraded to 1Gb. How much
RAM should I have to run OS X without the big delays you mention? If I
upgrade the RAM how to I make sure both RAM cards are recognised? My two
current RAM cards are 64Mb and 128Mb and one of them has slower RAM than
the other, but I read somewhere to get two RAM cards of the same type to
make sure they both work.

It would be sufficient to find out if the ethernet port works or not.

Expect to spend a lot of time waiting while memory pages get juggled

The key is that it's a G5. It's a power supply issue most likely; the G5 iMacs
were the Mac model most affected by the great Capacitor Plague
.

The service you're referring to almost certainly is a cap replacement service.
There are services and kits available to do this for both the logic board and
the power supply.

It sounds like a power supply issue or a processor issue. I had a Power Mac
G5 that would cause the take off mode when doing anything intensive, then
it would lock up, and it turned out I had a bad processor.

iMac G5 makes my xmas sad (help)

2011-12-25 Thread Charliefrown
Hello, I bought this 17" iMac G5 1.9 Ghz iSight model with OSX
10.4.11. First issue I noticed was no response to Power button. The
seller gave me a tip, which turned out to be "resetting SMU
procedure". Sometimes it helps, sometimes it gets powered off in the
middle of BONG, figured out I need to pull the plug off, wait several
minutes and try again.Yesterday finally managed to spare some time to
play with it and there's another problem. When I use apps like Safari
or games it starts that horrible fan noise (just like jet engine) and
then... it gets to sleep! It wakes up successfully, but it happens
again. I would contribute this getting into "sleep mode" with
processor consuming apps. I guess it wouldnt get asleep when I was
tinkering with OSX itself.

My first diagnosis was bad power supply (regarding to Power On and
sleep issues), even managed to find a Mac shop which offers PSU fixes
for $20-$70. I am hesitating if I should give it a try and send it to
forementioned service or just call it off and ask seller for refund.

What's your bet - power supply or something worse like motherboard?
TIA

Mike

PS. I havent tried to dust off the grill yet.

the age of the macs drives, they are of a time where it was common for many

I am not sure why, but certain computers won't accept burnt discs, for these
reasons:

The recorded speed was too high for the CD/DVD to be read on this current
drive
The Mac simply doesn't accept burnt discs
Or, there might be a special coding inside the Mac installer discs that tell
the system it's legit.

Re: Help with second hand iMac G3 with no operating system or disks

The G3 iMacs only will boot from original disks (not burnt ones). Yours has
anywhere between 64 and 256 Mb of ram unless it has been upgraded which
means that if you have 64 Mb you can boot Mac OS 9.2.2 at the most and if
you have 128 Mb or more you can boot OS X (depends on ram as to what
version).

I would check on your local craigslist, freecycle, etc to see if there are
any disks available.

Re: Help with second hand iMac G3 with no operating system or disks

2011-01-14 Thread skyvalley4jesus
Hi Dan,

You could also try contacting Apple direct. I contacted Apple when
the original OS disc for my G4 iMac broke. They charged like $25 to
replace the system disk.

Best of luck.

Foolish answer: there is a live Linux called "Doudou Linux" especially for
small children. It runs only off the CD and runs on less abled machines,
likely on yours. You could query the name on Distrowatch.com, and download
and install the ISO on a CD.

plug it back in the iMac and boot. If not, I do have some install disks for
the original iMac, but I don't think you'll want to work with an OS older

Help with second hand iMac G3 with no operating system or disks

2011-01-13 Thread Dan
Hi,

I brought an original imac (Model M5521) as a basic machine for my 4
year old to play on (it was $25)
I thought it was a bargain in a state of stupidity really.
I love these old looking imacs (have a new one now)

My question is how do i get it to run. I have tried a few torrents
online to get disks but none of them seem to work.
Does anyone have any ideas and does apple sell the original install
disks?

Cheers

Note that classic Mac OS users should (a) install the Disinfectant
INIT, (b) disable auto-start in the QuickTime control panel, and (c)
find some way to avoid the spread of Word macro viruses (such as not
running versions of Word later than 5.1). Fortunately, these are all
free.

Amen to that. As a late switcher, it took me nearly a year to finally

In my nine years of using OS X I have never been infected with any sort
of malware. Yes when they spoof your email address to send spam, or send
you spam that appears to come from your own email account, it is
disconcerting at first until you realize that it was just a spoof.

I have run ClamXAV here and there and the only thing it ever found was
something in a Windows font application, never anything that was even
capable of running on OS X.

I do seem to remember once reading about a malformed .jpg that was
posted in some Mac forum pretending to be some sort of spy shot of new
Apple hardware or something, and again a QuickTime 'updater' that some
adult site would try to convince unwitting OS X users to install, and
there were allegedly some infected copies of iWork or CS or something
floating around the bittorrent world. Download known software from
legitimate sites and you'll be ok.

The biggest risk as others have mentioned is phishing. When someone asks
for your personal information think twice before you hit the submit button.

With the caveat that Anecdote != Data :

I've been using Macs since 1987, and helping to administer a reasonably large
institution's (mainly WIndows-based) systems since 1994.

In all that time:

There have been occasional "proofs of concept" malware releases for OS X, but
they have never propagated very far, if at all. I've never seen one in the wild
here.

All the malware that our current AV systems see are 100% Windows-based. (and
they do have the Mac malware profiles included) The ONLY stuff we've ever
caught on Macs are Windows-oriented email attachments that came in on HD's from
other institutions.

I have *once* run into websites doing funky stuff to Mac-identifiable web
browsers, that was about two years ago, and it didn't last very long.

I've twice run into seriously malformed malware websites that have tried very
hard to convince me that my "C:\Windows" directory was infected with a long
list of nasty-sounding bits of software.

I got the WDEF virus spread pretty nastily through my stack of System 6 floppy
disks, which updating to System 7 cured.

That's about it.

I never got caught by the later classic Mac viruses because all you had to do
to avoid those was turn of Program Autoexecution in the Quicktime Control panel.

I've been told that you can occasionally find Word Macro viruses lurking about
in old, moldering software and mailing list archives, although those may also
be "...and then they found a HOOK in the fender of the car!!!" tales.

I keep getting told by authoritative folks in the IT industry that there will
be a flood of OS X malware "any day now"; I've been hearing that for ten years.

Any day now.

(and it's not a matter of market share...I've witnessed a bit of PC malware go
around that was aimed at a specific firewall product that probably had a
worldwide distribution in the low 10,000's of copies.)

2010-09-08 Thread Ashgrove
Oh boy. Here we go again.

By the way, nowadays viruses other than malware are usually nothing
more than that: something a company cooks up to
scare computer users into buying their product. And the most effective
forms of malware are not viruses, but phishing, which require you to
actively go to their fake websites and voluntarily give them all your
personal info --something that afflicts PCs and Macs alike.

We took a poll years ago on the PCI list. Out of responses from that list
and soem who responded with figures from other lists of about 2,500 listers
only one real virus was found and that was something a company cooked up to
scare Mac users into buying their product.

And I read nothing of the current state of affairs to lead me to believe
this has changed. If Mac OS X infecting bugs are out there they exist to
sell preventative software.

I'm sure Bruce or someone who must administer IT for a large installation
will set the record straight if this is wrong.

2010-09-07 Thread Ashgrove
Er... Adrian... "cold virus"? It was a joke, of course, although not a
good one.

Personally, I used ClamXav for a while when I first switched from
Windows, until I finally realized it was a waste of RAM and
uninstalled it.

The OP seems to have several problems, all apparently unrelated, but
until we get more info, like Bruce suggested, it's all guesswork.

I in myexperience am not wrong. If Windows is "ON" a Mac That part of the HD
can be infected.

Never saw any Mac OS with any sort of code infection. Nor heard of any

First things first.

First of all, tell us what Mac, what version of the OS you're using.

I can state that the email message in your sister's email box almost certainly
(99.%) did NOT come from your computer...spam just doesn't work that way
these days. The From: line is almost certainly forged.

Second the date being wrong is more likely due to a dead PRAM battery, and your
normal wireless network wasn't enabled for some reason? There is no dialog I
can think of you could get that would ask abot 'allowing or denying' incoming
networks.

Tell us *exactly* what the error says.

Finally, the odds are enormously *against* you having a virus on your mac.

You almost certainly do not have a virus.

It is most probable that the email was NOT sent from your computer; it
was sent from your HOTMAIL account. Someone has stolen or guessed your
password and is using your Hotmail account to send spam from their own
computer.

Change your password now!

Your second problem is your Mac forgetting things. Is it several years
old? When Macs forget dates, it is usually because the batteries
inside them have died and need to be replaced. The incoming networks
questions indicate that you need to adjust your firewall settings.
Instructions for doing so require knowing what version of the
operating system your Mac is running.

Yes, any brand should be fine for reading optical discs. However if you
are using 10.1 through 10.4 you may have issues burning discs with iLife
apps such as iDVD, possibly others. Apparently this became a non-issue
with 10.5.

Hold down the left-click button (or just the button) on your mouse and the CD
will eject.

Holding down the left mouse button after the boot-up chime will eject
the optical disc. To eject without rebooting hold down the F12 key for a
second or two.

It does take DDR RAM, but just with any other machine, you'll have to make sure
you install the right type. Here's what OWC offers:

The whole case is white.

I've got a Pioneer-branded drive that I installed myself in the eMac currently.
I've installed operating systems and burnt DVDs—even though it's not the
default drive, it works like a charm.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your new eMac!

eMac help

2010-07-22 Thread LEMLists
I just got my hands on a salvageable eMac from school.

It's got a 1.25ghz G4 and a 40gb hdd.

I replaced the damaged CD drive with my own DVD drive and now I've got a few
questions:

1: does it take any DDR ram or do I need special ram?

2: Is the eMac painted the same way as a G3 iBook (500+mhz) or is the whole
case white?

3: will a non-Apple branded DVD drive be able to be used to boot a Leopard
disk?

And finally:

How do I eject the cd tray through OSx without a keyboard? I don't have a
Mac keyboard yet and so I don't have the eject key.

Thanks

Actually SheepShaver was developed so that someone running BeOS or
Linux on PPC could run Mac apps, and it predates OS X (Sheepshaver was
released in 1998)

The other issue with SheepShaver is that it's limited to 9.0.4 as the
highest Mac OS it can run, unfortunately this means you have to drum
up an OS 9.0 CD, as the freely available NetBoot image is 9.2.2. A
minor point and not an issue if you have one.
