[LegacyUG] Filing methods and family group sheets

2006-12-30 Thread The Eccles Family

Hi Everyone,
I have been following the numerous discussions on filing systems with
interest.
I like the idea of the MRIN filing system but for me can see one drawback.
When visiting relatives that how do you take your information with you when
you don't have a laptop computer and your information is filed in different
folders under the MRIN?
I have been filing my family group sheets in folders according to the family
line.
As I am in Australia and most relatives are interested in the ancestors that
arrived and the descendants down so I use the immigrants as the starting
point. If the family is a large one and too much for one folder, I give each
child and their family a new folder. I then file the group sheets in the
order as laid out in a Descendant Report.
One problem that arrises is when printing out a batch of family group
sheets, they print out in alphabetical order and there is no way that I can
see to change this to an order similar to the descendant report.

Does any one have any suggestions or ideas.
Regards
Anne Eccles
Scone, NSW

Myrna,

I can confirm that the create/export GEDCOM facility is working Ok wrt Ancestry
but haven't tried it with Rootsweb.
Unlike Cathy I put mine in C:\Legacy\Data and this causes no problems.

 Hi Myrna,

I'm not sure whether there is a problem with Gedcom export. I'm not
aware of it but can't check at present as I'm rebuilding my computer
and Legacy isn't back on yet.

You don't Open Gedcom files in Legacy, you import them. Could that be
the problem and they are there?

Or have you not actually completed the creation but Saved the Options
you want thinking you were creating the Gedcom?

 Hope that helps,
 Cathy

 Hello listers,

I just finished adding 2 more generations (data from England
on Ancestry). I ran the Potential Problems report and made the
needed changes until there were no more problems, ran file
maintenance, saved and backed up to zip, double checked to be
sure the new data was ok. THEN, I went to 'file', 'export', then
exported to gedcom for Ancestry. I thought I followed all the
instructions (it has been a while since I updated to Ancestry)
but it would not load from within Legacy. So, I exported to
GEDCOM 5.5 then went to Ancestry and tried to upload within the
program. That did not work either. I tried to export to a GEDCOM
5.5 file again and open it in Legacy. THAT DID NOT WORK EITHER.
 It hung up in Legacy.
I do have the latest version of Legacy. Everything seems to
be working fine in the program since updating and I checked a few
of the new families and they seem to be okay. I did NOT try
running any reports because all I wanted to do was update my tree
on Ancestry. Anyone have ANY idea what is happening to my GEDCOM
 files?

RE: [LegacyUG] Name of Church - should be Restoring Zipped Files

2006-12-30 Thread ronald ferguson

With respect if Windows has to be re-installed anything on the same drive (eg
C:) will be lost.
The only safe way to avoid this is to partition the hard drive and keep all
data in a separate partion (ie. a different drive) to programs.

I thought I would let you know that keeping data files in the My Documents
folder could be disasterous if your windows program becomes corrupted and
you have to reload windows. If you ever have to reload windows then the My
Documents folder will be overwritten or erased. I would suggest a safer
approch would be to keep the data in a different folder other than My
Documents. I only use the My Documents for temporary or working copies and
save it to its own folder.

 Hi Marielle,

I haven't actually lost any data, but have practiced it just in case it
 happens.

Firstly download the Legacy programme from the website and install it. Then
you need to copy the zipped data file (I call mine 'My Family') and
multimedia zipped file to where you want to keep it on your computer. Many
keep them in the Data file of the Legacy Programme folder, I keep mine in a
folder called Family History in My Documents. When you have put the zipped
files where you want them, unzip them by right clicking on each zipped file
in turn and go to 'Extract all' in the menu and left click. The files
should then unzip. They will produce folders with the same name as the
zipped files but with out the zip picture going through the middle of the
file. All your information should be in the 'unzipped' folders and ready to
 use.

Next run the Legacy programme. A box will probably open asking you to load
a data file. If you have put your zipped and unzipped folders in the Data
file of the Legacy Programme folder you should see your unzipped folder,
open it and you should see your family data file. Click on it and it should
load. If you have put it elsewhere on your computer you will need to find
the file by navigating to it in the oblong at the top of the box.

When you run the Legacy programme, if the box asking you to load a data file
does not appear, go to the file menu at the top and click on open family
file to make the box appear.

Your data file should the open, but without any of the multimedia files/
pictures. You need to get Legacy to find the paths for these. Go to
OptionsCustomize. Click on the Locations tab and then 'Test all multimedia
paths', Proceed. If the multimedia files cannot be found the use the 'find
them yourself' option. You will then need to navigate to them yourself.
If, however you have put all your multimedia in one file, if you find one,
it will find all the others for you.

I hope this makes some sense. See you get on. Don't worry - remember you
have your backup data on the CD if anything should go wrong.

 Best of luck

Has anyone ever lost all the data in their Legacy File i.e. I tried to
download an update and I don't know what I did but now I have nothing in my
Legacy file I do have a CD back-up but since it is zipped I don't know
 how to open it.

Sounds kind of silly I guess but right now I have a mental block about his

I'm planning on changing that before I have too many certificates, as

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Sources

2006-12-30 Thread Heather Stovold

At the moment, I have, for my Canadian ancestors, 1 Master Source for Birth
Certificates/Registrations per province. I can't remember if my UK
ancestors are for each Shire or Parish - would have to check.

So - Master Sources are:

Birth Certificate - Canada, Ontario
Birth Certificate - Canada, Alberta

The Detail Source would have the particular person's name, and any if there
is one the certificate number, in the identifying part of the source.

ie:

Certificate 196743, Certificate for John Doe

Rob:

The verified designation would refer specifically to the source you've
cited. If that's a published book, the designation means you've seen the
book yourself (as opposed to having copied someone else's transcription) and
properly recorded the information--not necessarily that it's true. If the
book should then happen to cite a baptismal record, for example, and you
follow through and find that record (which you should if at all possible),
then you can either replace the book citation or add another referring to
the baptismal record, which would then also be designated verified.

Would a published book be verifiable? I can verify that what I have
entered and what the book says is the same. But I can't necessarily verify
that the book is correct.

Now they still appear without HTML coding in the source details, however, in

For newly entered details this happens straightaway, but for older entries
the HTML only appears if I look at the details!

Example – :

Marriages Sep 1887
BARKER Gertrude Lily Alverstoke 2b910
HAINES Charles Alverstoke 2b910

Appears in grey box as

Marriages Sep 1887

HAINES Charles Alverstoketab 2btab910

On some entries this makes the details almost unreadable. Clicking on
‘Strip HTML makes no difference.
Has anyone got an answer to this?

One possibility: Use the Publishing Center as if you were producing a book,

Your batches of sheets are probably fairly stable, so you can create as many

I have been filing my family group sheets in folders according to the family

line.
As I am in Australia and most relatives are interested in the ancestors that
arrived and the descendants down so I use the immigrants as the starting
point. If the family is a large one and too much for one folder, I give each
child and their family a new folder. I then file the group sheets in the
order as laid out in a Descendant Report.
One problem that arrises is when printing out a batch of family group
sheets, they print out in alphabetical order and there is no way that I can
see to change this to an order similar to the descendant report.
Does any one have any suggestions or ideas.

Re: [LegacyUG] Drop down descendant report

Marg,

I am not sure what you mean by a drop down box descendant chart but if it is
something that shows on screen you might try the free capture program by Fast
Stone. It is very simple to use and will give you the ability to capture any
portion of a screen display for printing, emailing, documenting, etc.

Please post a more detailed description of the descendant chart that you have
in mind and I'm sure others will offer more ideas for you.

RE: [LegacyUG] Master Sources

2006-12-30 Thread Linda Altman
I use a master source for all birth records from the same facility. For
example if I have 4 birth certificates that were issued from the NY City
Dept of Health, then I would cite the Master Source as Birth Certificate NYC
Dept of Health. If I obtained an older certificate that was originally
issued by the Dept of Health but was issued to me by the City Archives, then
I would cite the master source as Birth Certificate NY City Archives.

Marielle,

Firstly may I request that when you wish to start a new subject you use the
new button on your email program with a different subject title.
I was not interested in the Name of Church thread and was deleting these
emails but accidently viewed yours. It is quite possible others have missed
it for the same reason.

You say you have lost all you data but do not say if you still have Legacy
on your computer but if you have then just do the following.

1. Copy the zipped back-up file (assuming it is your data file) to
C:\Legacy\Data
2. Open Legacy
3. Go to FileRestore File
4. Then follow the instructions.

RE: [LegacyUG] Name of Church - should be Restoring Zipped Files

2006-12-30 Thread David S Brookes
Hi Russ,

I thought that if you need to reload windows you loose everything on the
same drive. In practice I only keep the zipped backups in my documents. My
working files (Data and Multimedia) I keep on flash drive. For a matter of
interest, I keep most other documents on Zip discs, flash or CD/DVD
depending on what they are and how often I need to access or alter them.

Best wishes

If,
however you have put all your multimedia in one file, if you find one, it
will find all the others for you.

I hope this makes some sense. See you get on. Don't worry - remember you
have your backup data on the CD if anything should go wrong.

Best of luck

With respect if Windows has to be re-installed anything on the same drive
(eg C:) will be lost. The only safe way to avoid this is to partition the
hard drive and keep all data in a separate partion (ie. a different drive)
to programs.

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOMs

2006-12-30 Thread myrna20
Kirsten,
I also saved mine to the desktop. Whatever the problem is it
is also causing it to not import back into Legacy either. I tried
making both Gedcom 5.5 and Gedcom for Ancestry. I did not try
Gedcom for Legacy. Neither of the two Geds would load to Ancestry
or import back to Legacy.
Since my e-mail last night I have run file maintenance again
and also Potential Problems report and they seem to be fine.
Somewhere I have a glitch with exporting proper Gedcoms. If no
one has a solution soon I may just download the latest Legacy
update again and try it. Something may have happened during the
download.
Thanks for all the support,

No, I have been doing the export and import and completed the
creation. I even opened it in WP and it is all there with all the

Something is wrong somewhere in the creation.
Maybe with a fresh mind this morning I can clean off my

that may even help. Maybe WinXP is playing games with me for the
last time - THIS YEAR! Sure hope it is simple.
Thanks again,

[LegacyUG] Marriage address (was Name of Church)

2006-12-30 Thread Ron Taylor
It would be great if a + button were added to the Marriage Information
screen at the end of the marriage location field so that it would be
consistent with the location fields for birth, christening, death, burial.
Also, the notes for marriage to be consistent should likewise be under such
a + button instead of showing the icon like that of general notes...and
the gallery of marriage pictures could also be accessed there as well. The
icons for marriage pictures and notes could remain where they are now to
provide redundancy and to avoid disturbing those who use them in their
current mode.

Bottom line...there is no programmed place to store the marriage address
like there is for birth, death, etc. If there were one, then it could be
included in building a sentence about the marriage, churches and reception
centers could be kept from the master location list, etc.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Sources

2006-12-30 Thread myrna20
Ralf,
Since I am basically lazy :-)) I use ONE master source and
make the changes for each one on the source detail. It is easy
when you are using the FreeBMD records from England and Canada.
With the US records I record it as Death Certificates - Texas
(or Florida or whatever) and give the location of the state
archives. Then in source detail I put the certificate # with the
city, county, etc. The birth certificates and marriages are done
the same way. So for the US I would have a maximum of 50 entries
for Death Certificates or Marriage Certificates or Birth
Certificates and the source details are attached to the
individual.
That is how I do it and as usual there are MANY ways. Let's
see how many more the list comes up with.

[LegacyUG] Gedcom problem

2006-12-30 Thread myrna20
Hello Listers,
As an update to my Gedcom problem - I did not solve the
problem of loading the file through Ancestry but did get it to
load through Legacy. When I went to 'file' then 'Upload to
Ancestry Online Family Tree...' then created the gedcom file and
Legacy uploaded to Ancestry. It worked! That means it is a
problem with Ancestry, not me, or the Legacy program, or creating
gedcoms, or even WinXP (forgive me Bill?).
So, that means the moral of the story is Never give up!!!

Re: [LegacyUG] HTML codes - how to get rid of!

2006-12-30 Thread Susan Daily

Margaret,
I noticed the change too, which was annoying. What I now do is copy
the information, open up Notepad (found in Start - All Programs -
Accessories if you are running Windows XP etc), paste it into the
Notepad, then Ctrl-A (select all) and Ctrl-C (copy it all back into
memory) then paste it into Legacy. I leave a shortcut to Notepad in my
Quick Launch Toolbar since I use it several times a day. Notepad is a
text-only program so it eliminates all formatting, including font
sizes, html codes, tables, etc.

RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage address (was Name of Church)

2006-12-30 Thread ronald ferguson

Sorry Ron,
I cannot agree with the abolition of the current position of Marriage Notes.
I use these notes for entering marriage index references (in the UK that's
mainly the CRO ref.) and like a ready access for when I order the certificates.
By all means request a location + button but please not at the expense of the
current notes.

2006-12-30 Thread Susan Daily

Ralf,
My method is similar to Myrna's. I prefer to have only six master
sources for the basic information:
Certificate/Record - Baptism
Certificate/Record - Birth
Certificate/Record - Confirmation
Certificate/Record - Death
Certificate/Record - Divorce
Certificate/Record - Marriage

In my Source Detail Notes is where I get more specific, so future
researchers could locate the same source if they wanted to. These are
some examples:

City of Lowell Vital Records - Birth 1893 book L, p. 67, no. 2511 -
[Crowley, (Female)] Pollard Memorial Library, Lowell, MA; viewed
microfiche 10 May 2005

MA Vital Records Lowell Year 1850 Vol. 49 Page 69 No. 191 [O'Neal
Ellen] original record viewed online; www.newenglandancestors.org

Leo P Cooke 26 Dec 1986 - Florida Death Index, 1936-1998. [database
online] Original data: 1877-1998 Florida Health Department, Office of
Vital Records, 1998. Ancestry.com.

Murphy, William L. d 8 Oct 1975; Woburn, MA Town Clerk copy 17 Nov 1987

O'Neil, Martin William d. 20 Jul 1951; Rhode Island State Dept. of
Health copy 28 Jul 1951 on microfilm accessed at Providence, RI State
Archives (by [volunteer's name] on 22 Feb 2006).

Note what Cathy said - she likes to be able to see who else may have
also had the same source (this is accomplished by clicking on Show
List). In my example, the Show List would be a worthless exercise -
except to see how few are the people I have divorce or confirmation
records for. So you will want to decide if you will think it is
important to see how many B/M/D records you got from, for example, the
state of Texas (Myrna's example) or the GRO. Or you might decide you
don't think you'll ever do that, and prefer to keep your Master
Sources List short.

Ralf,
Since I am basically lazy :-)) I use ONE master source and
make the changes for each one on the source detail. It is easy
when you are using the FreeBMD records from England and Canada.

If,
however you have put all your multimedia in one file, if you find one, it
will find all the others for you.

I hope this makes some sense. See you get on. Don't worry - remember you
have your backup data on the CD if anything should go wrong.

Best of luck

Hi Myrna,

Strictly neither!

The bible for Parish registers, The Phillimore

Wickham St Paul's, (note the apostrophe ess)

Despite that, several UK atlases call it Wickham St Paul.

Just to add to the confusion, the Essex pages in

In all cases, of course, the Wickham precedes the dedication to St Paul.

Ron,
This happened to me but, I have reinstalled windows with the option to keep
the directory system intact so even though I reloaded windows my data was
still intact in the other folders, however the documents that I had in
MyDocuments folder was not recoverable. Once I reloaded windows and
reinstalled the programs I was able to utilize the data that was in their
own directory folders and not the MyDocuments folder. Just relaying what I
found when it happened to me so. I allways keep important files in their own
directory other than a windows system folder. I also have an external hard
drive and a laptop. I backup to C: then use Windows SyncToy to syncronize
my genealogy folder, my email, and my financial data to the external drive
so what is on the external drive. Then I use SyncToy on my laptop to
syncronize the laptop with the external drive. So I have at least 3 copies
of my genealogy file incase of a major catastrophic hard drive crash.
My external drive is 300 G and is attached to my PC and my home network and
I have partitioned it 3 ways. D: is partitioned as the data drive that I
sync to. E: partitioned as the System backup drive of my PC and F: is
partitioned as the System backup of my laptop run through the network.

With respect if Windows has to be re-installed anything on the same drive
(eg C:) will be lost.
The only safe way to avoid this is to partition the hard drive and keep all
data in a separate partion (ie. a different drive) to programs.

Margaret,
I noticed the change too, which was annoying.

I agree with Susan.

I have done similar link or placeholder names. I have several of
them in my database for three purposes: 1) the disproven as you've
noted, where you want to report that something is false, 2) the
placeholder where I know there is a linkage but don't have names/details
yet, and 3) a few unrelated family lines with same names, where I find
it easier to handle it within one family database rather than repeatedly
using split-screen, etc.

Depending on whom I am publishing something to, I may or may not
remove these from the report. And if I wanted to produce a pure database
(e.g. for putting up on RootsWeb or Ancestry), it would be easy to do.

create a bridge link person that states in given name This line has

Add this bridge person to the false connection's children list, and
make this bridge person the parent of the last proven ancestor. Change
the wording on the bridge person's name to reflect the actual

[LegacyUG] Restoring Zipped Files

Dear David

We have been following your very explicit instructions for which we thank
you.

We have been able to recover data which was put in the Legacy File on
November 13, 2006 however, even though the later file named December 3rd
can be seen when we do a search, I have not been able to open it.

We are getting pretty tired now so will have to give it another try
tomorrow.

We will also recheck the Legacy web site.

We want to thank everyone for their helpful suggestions.

If,
however you have put all your multimedia in one file, if you find one, it
will find all the others for you.

I hope this makes some sense. See you get on. Don't worry - remember you
have your backup data on the CD if anything should go wrong.

Best of luck

[LegacyUG] Notes bug - adding extra space when pasting text

2006-12-30 Thread Susan Daily

I found a little bug today - I am adding a bunch of notes to the
Research tab of a relative and placing them in the [[privacy
brackets]]. When I copy and paste something into the double brackets,
click on save, and return to the notes, a space has been added before
the [[ at the beginning of the line. I checked and there were no extra
spaces in the line above. I am pasting large formatted text into the
line, closing it, and reopening it to find it in the standard small
Legacy text font that I use for notes.

This is part of what is in my research notes:

[[Irish Flax Growers, 1796 - Dogherty James Cloone Leitrim]]
[[Griffiths Valuation of Ireland - xx
Doherty Peter Drumharkan Glebe Cloone Leitrim
Doherty Michael Drumharkan Glebe Cloone Leitrim
Doherty John Drumharkan Glebe Cloone Leitrim
Doherty James Sunnagh Beg Cloone Leitrim
Doherty Eliza Drumharkan Glebe Cloone Leitrim]]

Where I have the xx above, insert the first line that says Griffiths
Valuation of Ireland from the web site
http://www.failteromhat.com/post1845.php . Save the Notes then reopen
them. An extra space appears before the [[ in that line. (It also
happened when I copied the header Irish Flax Growers, 1796 from
another similar web site to the line above.)

Can anyone reproduce or explain?
Thanks,
Susan Daily

RE: [LegacyUG] Name of Church - should be Restoring Zipped Files

2006-12-30 Thread ronald ferguson

Russ,
I do not doubt your experience but bear in mind that there are various versions
of Windows XP.
Not only is there the Home and Pro versions but also the full and OEM. Mine for
example is the Home OEM.
I am aware that one version (I think it is XP Pro) has a repair option which is
not available on other versions and certainly not on OEM versions.
For all I know there may be variations from country to country as well.

On the Version I have I do not have the option to repair nor the option keep
the directory system intact.
As I would imagine most people have the OEM version it is much safer to assume
that nothing will survive a reinstallation of Windows.

Although I keep backups on my HD I also regularly back-up to CD of all
important files for extra safety.

 Ron,
This happened to me but, I have reinstalled windows with the option to keep
the directory system intact so even though I reloaded windows my data was
still intact in the other folders, however the documents that I had in
MyDocuments folder was not recoverable.

Re: [LegacyUG] Filing methods and family group sheets

2006-12-30 Thread WALT ALICE DE*WAELE
Hi Anne,

I use three ring binders for each family or family line and within the
binder I use the MRIN filing system. I have an alphabetical index for that
family or families at the beginning of each binder so I can quickly find who
I am looking for. Then I start each MRIN file with a family group sheet.
It works for me.

Walt DeWaele
from snowy Colorado

 Hi Everyone,
I have been following the numerous discussions on filing systems with
 interest.
I like the idea of the MRIN filing system but for me can see one drawback.
When visiting relatives that how do you take your information with you
 when
you don't have a laptop computer and your information is filed in
 different
 folders under the MRIN?
I have been filing my family group sheets in folders according to the
 family
 line.
As I am in Australia and most relatives are interested in the ancestors
 that
arrived and the descendants down so I use the immigrants as the starting
point. If the family is a large one and too much for one folder, I give
 each
child and their family a new folder. I then file the group sheets in the
order as laid out in a Descendant Report.
One problem that arrises is when printing out a batch of family group
sheets, they print out in alphabetical order and there is no way that I
 can
see to change this to an order similar to the descendant report.
Does any one have any suggestions or ideas.

Marg,

I am not sure what you mean by a drop down box descendant chart but if it
is something that shows on screen you might try the free capture program by
Fast Stone. It is very simple to use and will give you the ability to
capture any portion of a screen display for printing, emailing, documenting,
etc.

Please post a more detailed description of the descendant chart that you
have in mind and I'm sure others will offer more ideas for you.

[LegacyUG] Fw: Sorting Event References

2006-12-30 Thread Judy

Two questions of the group:

1) Is there a way to sort references to events (either alpha or numeric)
in the same manner that the dates for the events can be sorted during
routine maintenance?

2) Is there a way to create a list of references that have been place in
the Unspecified category of the reference page?

Thanks,

Judy

Yes, but we need to click on Strip HTML then save (which is when the

 Margaret,
I noticed the change too, which was annoying.

Your example is called a Descendant Tree and can't be printed from Legacy.
Legacy is a wonderful program, but unfortunately it doesn't produce trees.
To get these you must export your database to another program with charting

this topic in the LUG Archives; you might take a look there for ideas on
which way to go.

I used to get the dialog box asking if I want to apply changes to all
occurrences of create a new source.

I no longer seem to get this, it just changes the original source.

How much do I have to change or what fields need to be changed for it to ask
the question so I can create a new source instead of changing the original?

I subscribe to the free version of Dick Eastman's newsletter and he
recommended a web site where you can save up to 2GB of information for
free - this data would be saved off site, so presumably your Legacy
data would remain safe in the event of catastrophy.

To sign up for the free 2 gigabytes of storage or for the $4.95/month
unlimited storage option, go to http://mozy.com/?kbid=7017.

Every time you update your Legacy file, the Mozy backup storage
software would recognize that you changed the data, and would
automatically upload it offsite at some point. This Mozy option is
only recommended for people with broadband connections, however, and
users of Windows XP (not Linux).

The complete article by Dick Eastman is here:

Russ,
I do not doubt your experience but bear in mind that there are various
versions of Windows XP.
Not only is there the Home and Pro versions but also the full and OEM. Mine
for example is the Home OEM.
I am aware that one version (I think it is XP Pro) has a repair option which
is not available on other versions and certainly not on OEM versions.

For all I know there may be variations from country to country as well.

On the Version I have I do not have the option to repair nor the option keep
the directory system intact.
As I would imagine most people have the OEM version it is much safer to
assume that nothing will survive a reinstallation of Windows.

Although I keep backups on my HD I also regularly back-up to CD of all
important files for extra safety.

Ron,
This happened to me but, I have reinstalled windows with the option to
keep

the directory system intact so even though I reloaded windows my data was
still intact in the other folders, however the documents that I had in
MyDocuments folder was not recoverable. Once I reloaded windows and
reinstalled the programs I was able to utilize the data that was in their
own directory folders and not the MyDocuments folder. Just relaying what I
found when it happened to me so. I allways keep important files in their
own

directory other than a windows system folder. I also have an external hard
drive and a laptop. I backup to C: then use Windows SyncToy to
syncronize

my genealogy folder, my email, and my financial data to the external drive
so what is on the external drive. Then I use SyncToy on my laptop to
syncronize the laptop with the external drive. So I have at least 3 copies
of my genealogy file incase of a major catastrophic hard drive crash.
My external drive is 300 G and is attached to my PC and my home network
and

I have partitioned it 3 ways. D: is partitioned as the data drive that I
sync to. E: partitioned as the System backup drive of my PC and F: is
partitioned as the System backup of my laptop run through the network.

RE: [LegacyUG] Name of Church - should be Restoring Zipped Files

2006-12-30 Thread ronald ferguson

Roger,

The point I was trying to make was two fold:

a) That Windows varies depending on it's type and for most people it cannot be
taken for granted that on reinstallation one will be able to retain files not
in My Documents.

b) It is therefore essential to have additional back-ups, certainly not in the
same directory and, much better, not on the hard drive.

The mentioning of the repair function was rather an aside, but again whether
this is available or not varies. Dell almost certainly can do a better deal
than a smaller manufacturer for example.
As I said, I know my version of OEM XP Home does not have it.

Re: [LegacyUG] CDs and Gedcoms and Passage Express

2006-12-30 Thread Bob Janice

Tracey,

Passage Express cannot open GEDcom files natively - it needs GENViewer.
Go to the Options menu in Passage Express and then click on File
Readers. You should see GENViewer Lite listed as the reader for GEDcom
files. If not simply click the Add button, navigate to where it is on
your computer and add it. When you create the CD or DVD GENViewer Lite
should then automatically be included on the CD.

RE: [LegacyUG] Decendant narrative report missing spouse (start person)

2006-12-30 Thread ronald ferguson

Tracy,

It is necessary for you to ensure that in all cases Incude Spouses is
checked. Otherwise in descendant reports of your husband's line, as you are not
a descendant of that line, you will not appear.

It is not sexist btw as your husband will not appear in the descendant report
of your line unless specified.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Decendant narrative report missing spouse (start person)

 Hi Listers
I'm somewhat miffed at this one, using deluxe 6 build 118 - I'm the
start person (no 1) in my file and when I create Descendant Narrative
reports (rtf, pdf, preview) with my husband's line I don't always
appear in the report, except as an entry in the index, but not in the
main report. Doesn't matter if I select/deselect pictures, I still
don't appear in the main report, only as an index entry. The weird
part is that I am included in html and txt versions of Descendant
 Narrative reports.

Sometimes, Legacy won't even put in any marriages for the Descendant
Narrative report, then I go close it down and delete the USR files,
run check/repair, even then intermittently I don't appear in the rtf,
pdf and screen/printer versions of the report. Glad that I can still
 use html.
 Cheers
 Tracy

Re: [LegacyUG] Filing methods and family group sheets

2006-12-30 Thread The Eccles Family

Hi Walt,
Do you keep your family lines separate in Legacy or do you have them in one
file?
In printing group sheets there is the option to print them in MRIN's but
only for the entire family file. There does not seem to be a way of printing
a focus group (say descendants) in MRIN order.

I use three ring binders for each family or family line and within the
binder I use the MRIN filing system. I have an alphabetical index for
that family or families at the beginning of each binder so I can quickly
find who I am looking for. Then I start each MRIN file with a family
group sheet. It works for me.

I have been filing my family group sheets in folders according to the
family

line.

[LegacyUG] SINGLE NAMES

2006-12-30 Thread Art Sedddon
Hi Listers;

What is the accepted way of entering the name of an individual who oly has one
name? I do not mean that the given name is unknown, but that he has only one
name. I am speaking not only of historical characters such as Moses, but
contemporary people with only one name, such as a businessman in Arizona whose
only name is Nelson. That is what is on his business card and how he
introduces his self.

I am not sure, but I would think you would only get the pop-up if you had
used that source somewhere. If it is new and you haven't used it yet, there
would be no need to ask if you wanted to apply the changes to all
occurences.

I'm wanting to copy a source document to a new source and then make changes
to it.

I used to get the dialog box asking if I want to apply changes to all
occurrences of create a new source.

I no longer seem to get this, it just changes the original source.

How much do I have to change or what fields need to be changed for it to ask
the question so I can create a new source instead of changing the original?
