Re: [MBZ] Funny shipping
Yes, the same, slightly flexible plastic strips to which I was referring. My car is right on the line too, perfect way to describe it! There are just a few more good things going for it than bad, pretty neglected through the years but has a nice interior and pretty straight body despite the slight rocker/floor rust and some rust behind the rear wheels. Right now, I'm trying to chase down a slight brake fluid leak. I'm suspecting that it's leaking into the booster, no way to know for sure other than that there's no evidence of fluid leaking onto the ground when pumping the pedal. Now that I have another pressure bleeder nearly set up, I'm going to blead and pressurize the system and see if we can figure out where it's leaking. To give you an idea of the size of the leak, the reservoir was enpty after a few times out with the car. Re: [MBZ] 300SD suspension rebuild done!
I discovered that an empty anti-freeze jug makes a very nice pillow for working under the car. Right size, and fairly comfortable. Timely advice since I'm right in the middle of my 240D engine/tranny mount replacement job! I had to cut the job short as I needed a 6mm hex socket for the upper bolts since the one I had wasn't a good fit and would have stripped the heads if I had pressed onward. Just as I was about to go back to work, the weather turned a quick 180 from partly cloudy skies with lots of sun to RAIN, HAIL AND WIND for at least an hour!! I put on a rain coat, threw the tools in the back seat footwell and called it a night. I didn't even see the storm coming, hahahahaha! I love your description of that 450SL! This 240D I have is much the same, pretty good mechanically although it's been eaten up by the tin worm too. It doesn't have any mold in the cabin, one of the reasons I bought it. It's a good around town car, but with all of the rust, isn't worth putting much money into restauring it's beauty, IMO. It will be getting motor mounts and shocks to enhance the driving pleasure, and it may need some driveshaft work as it has a slight vibration at speed. For $750, you can't complain too much. Re: [MBZ] '77 240D alternator belt adjustment woes
After hours of fiddling with the alt, I was able to get the third bolt loose, the one inboard from the toothed adjuster bolt at the top. It actually comes in from the front like the other two with a nut on the backside. Once I was able to get it loose enough to allow the bracket to move with the adjuster, I was able to set the belt tension and get it right. Initially, I thought that the adjuster was maxed out, so I bought a shorter belt. I ended up going back to the original once I was able to get the adjuster working as it should. I'll never be stumped by a W123 alternator again!!! I do have another question. While rolling around under the car, I found a part attached to the cross member just behind the oil pan. In the middle of this cross member is a stud/bolt that faces the oil pan. Right now, it has bare threads at one end. Is there supposed to be a nut on it? What is it holding? Re: [MBZ] '77 240D alternator belt adjustment woes
Well, therein lies the problem. I only see two bolts, the toothy one at the top and a pivot bolt at the bottom, both currently loose. Where would the third bolt be? Does it come in from the front with a nut on the backside like the other two? It's been a while since I've dealt with one of these on my first '78 300D whose toothy bolt wasn't up to the task either. On this 240D with the two afore mentioned bolts loose, the alt will move 1/4 or a little more back and forth. I can't move it by hand to get any tightness on the belt. Re: [MBZ] 240D Update
That's a funny story! I would have seen the rust if I wanted to crawl underneath on the muddy driveway. I probably wouldn't have bought it if I had known what was under there. However, now that it's here, we're going to have some fun with it. It also has a bitt of blowby pressure coming out the oil cap, but no smoke. I'm hoping some of this clears up now that it has Mobil 1 in the crankcase. We had it out for a few hours today around town. We got it up to almost 80 to clean it out before doing the emissions testing and registration. It passed! Now, I'm going to get some fuel filters and Diesel Purge, and try to find another set of valve adjustment wrenches to replace the ones I lost. Yes, I'm totally blind, 100%. I have pretty good luck with mechanical things, but I haven't tried soldering or welding. Of course, I couldn't see the color of the metal to determine if I was welding or just blasting through something. It's too hot to touch to try to find out where I would be working...OUCH! I'll have to have someone else weld up this car, either a shop or preferably a new owner. There are quite a few cars out there with generally rust free bodies. [MBZ] 240D Update
I found some things that were better than expected, and a couple things that were a bit worse. The sway bar link isn’t broken. The dragging sound was the exhaust pipe rubbing on the axle. As a temporary repair, I replaced the missing donut with a couple zip ties until I get the parts. The bad part was when I jacked up the left front to switch out the badly worn tire with the much better spare. This was when I found a bit of rot under the jack point, same situation on the other side. The rocker panels and floorboards seem ok, but as you go under the car, there’s rot in the whole corner on both sides just behind the wheelwells. This isn’t turning out to be such a good car after all. I’ll probably end up getting my money back out of it and move on. Re: [MBZ] The 240D LIVES!
I got my hands a bit dirtier with the 240D today. I pulled out the rear bench seat to find very little mess underneath. The cloth backing on the seat upholstery is still intact, something I haven't seen on any of my W123's to date! Is it any co-inky-dink that this is the only one without a sunroof? HMMM! Other than the driver's seat, the MB-Tex and seat springs are in AWESOME shape. Also, the vacuum locks work!! The rear passenger door lock rod can't be moved by hand, and doesn't move with the other 3 locks. Under the hood, things are pretty good. While it was running, I walked around and listened. I had noticed a rattle when we first drove the car, and it was still there. I determined that it was coming from the right side of the engine, so I hit the stop lever and began feeling around. It turned out to be a loose bolt that holds the air filter bracket to the intake manifold. I removed the three bolts holding the air filter housing to get access to the offending bolt. Now that everything is put back as it should be, it sounds great! It seems to be idling too low. I've never adjusted the idle on any of my cars before. All I had to do to get her running was to hook up the new battery! One 45 second glow cycle and it lit right off like it was sitting overnight! The idle is a bit low and the shift notches don’t line up with the gates, but the drivetrain performs as it should, even the kickdown function! Holding true with any 35 year old survivor, she does have some bad and a bit of ugly thrown in too. There’s a rattle/grinding somewhere in the left rear when the car is moving. I thought it was the muffler dragging, but the exhaust seems to be buttoned up tightly. It doesn’t sound like a sway bar link, more rotational sounding. It came with a set of brake pads, so it could be something with the left rear caliper. The back of the hood is up, probably bent hinges, and the UGLY is the rust through under the battery tray! A little microwave sheet metal, some welding, painting and rust proofer would do it (where are you, Cathey? The rear window gasket is quite dry and cracked, and the front isn’t far behind. I was thinking about possibly purchasing the Toyota/Tesla RAV4 soon to be available, but am reconsidering after reading this. The same situation is possible with the Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries that I use in my radio-controlled truck, and that was a shock to me at nearly $70.00 for a new pack. $40,000 would be a bit more shocking to say the least! Luckily, I was able to resurrect my battery that I left plugged into the truck, a big nono. I had to hook it to a standard charger, charge it up to the minimal capacity (a major fire risk), and then hook it up to the LiPo charger. It worked, and the battery is as good as new. [MBZ] Finally some news on the 240D
I was finally able to get in touch with the owner of that 240D down the street from me. It’s a 1977 with 200K+ on the clock. He will sell it for $750 which seems fair. The car was a runner before the owner moved south to Eugene and left the car at Mom’s place. He used to commute from Hillsboro with no problems, but he’s been bicycling to work since he’s so close. He has his receipts as well as maintenance records going back 10 years from the previous owner. He has $2K into the car, but would rather sell it to someone who’ll use it than have it sit there unused. I have my suspitions that either it’s not a ‘77 or the engine/tranny have been swapped since it has the vacuum modulation setup rather than strictly mechanical linkages. He doesn’t recall ever doing a valve adjustment, so that would be the first order of business. He invited me to go over and fiddle with it this Saturday to see if I can get it running. Her mechanic quoted hundreds of dollars to fix it, so she approached me today asking if I would fix it for less. I wanted to bounce this off you guys for any gotchas before jumping in. I haven’t looked it to see what has to be removed to get to the offending hose. It sounds like a challenge for me, and an opportunity to make a few bucks to put into my own project 240D. Anyone BTDT? If I get a chance to buy it, I'll have to look to find the paint code. Where is it located? BTW, it doesn't have a hole in the roof, Wilton! It has crank windows, but also has AC. I would say it's at least a 1980 due to the vacuum tranny modulation. While driving around town today, we found a 240D automatic sitting in a driveway. It’s straight, nice cream (not sure of the proper name) interior with some sort of yellow exterior full of moss/mold. We wrote a note hoping for a response from the owners who weren’t home. It would be a good one to fix up, clean up and enjoy. Tesla and Toyota are colaborating on a Rav4 EV which I actually got to see and ride in as well since my brother-in-llaw works for Toyota. Electric vehicles would suit our family driving habits very well. It wouldn't tow the boat or travel trailer, so we would have to have a fuel burner in the fleet for that, the '07 Dodge Diesel. My favorite AMC car was my Dad's '69 AMX that he had in the late 70's. It had a 390. It was awesome! He bought it as a running, major oil burning fixer upper. After we fixed the leaky rear main and put a new timing chain in it, the thing ran great. Re: [MBZ] 40 years of MB Dieselling
Although I can't drive, I've had plenty of hobby cars over the past 20 years that I've worked on and ridden in. The first one was a '58 Volvo 444 in 1991, '62 Corvair Monza Convertible in '95, '62 Corvair Greenbrier Van in '97, '64 Corvair Greenbrier van later that year (used the '62 as a parts donor), '62 Studebaker Lark V8 in '98, a couple of Ford Pinto wagons and a Mercury bobcat hatchback in the early 2000's, but I came to my senses and bought my first Mercedes, a '78 300d in 2002. in 2003, I got another '78 300D. I ended up selling those and getting another '78 300d in 2004. Then came the short term Mazda Diesel that moved some of our stuff and hauled supplies for the new house. Those two went away and were replaced by the '78 300CD I should have never sold. Then came the '81 300CD I learned how toachust der falfs which got it back on the road. The last one to date, the '83 300SD I owned for 3 years. I'll own another Mercedes Diesel someday. Re: [MBZ] OT - Plymouth van tranny question
We had a $800 '91 Voyager beater complete with pealing paint and an occasional 2nd gear sticking probblem as well as the balking fwd gear after backing out when cold. The above issues were the reason for the low price although it only had 110K miles. It spent most of the time in town with an occasional freeway run and served us well for 3 years. The 2nd gear situation was more likely to happen when it was cold, and would almost always go back to normal after driving a while, shutting it down and restarting it again. Tranny shop said that it may need a shift pack solenoid, but I never had it fixed since it was so easy to work around. We now have a '05 TC touring purchased new 6 years ago, now with 33K miles on it, 3.3L engine. Other than the rear shocks getting bouncy, it's been wonderful. Yes, the heater fans work on both cars, according to the seller. The running car has lots of little problems like a beaten-up body, rough interior, stripped window cranks, worn pads and rotors, and the squeaking belt problems. The possible donor car has the better body and interior plus new pads and rotors, and the window cranks. I inquired when they first went up for $1000, but I really want an automatic since my potential drivers can't drive manny. The running car has a manny tranny, so I thought of the possibility of swapping out the good engine for the auto car. A car can be perfectly fine after an accident with the replacement of only front sheet metal. For a few years during the early 80's, our car was a 1972 Pinto Station Wagon. Dad picked it up for $200 since it had been hit head-on. Within a weekend, he installed a new radiator and a front clip off a 1974 Pinto, and though it was a different color, it was rock solid. It never left us stranded, and he still made a profit on it 4 years later! It had the 2000CC OHC engine with an automatic transmission, slow but determined! Wow, over 60K for a Sprinter on closeout? My fully loaded 2 year leftover '06 Sprinter 2500 standard roof Passenger van was priced at $36K in August of 2007! The similarly equipped 10 passenger 07 high roof van we tested earlier that summer was 41K. The only passenger van on the lot when we finally decided to buy one was that '06 with 600 miles on it! I guess the '07's were more popular with the new body style and the new, quieter V6 Diesel. I preferred The earlier Sprinters since the body seemed more solid, and the doors closed with a metallic clunk sound similar to a W116 Mercedes. Also, the seats, both upholstery and design, were higher quality. The 2.7L 5 cylinder Diesel was louder, vibrated a bit more and had more exhaust odor than the V6 Diesel. I did grow to like the sound and smell of it, kind of harkened back to the old SD. Re: [MBZ] My purchase of the week
Congratulations on your new purchase! I've admired your buying and selling strategy since I joined the Mercedes list, so now that I have room in the budget, I decided to do a similar business with rC cars and trucks. I've started buying up some fixer uppers since I enjoy rebuilding them and tuning them up to run in top form. I can fix and drive many different ones for much less than buying them new (in most cases), and I can at least pay the bills and keep the funds flowing by putting most of them up for sale. , . I found a pretty good package deal on two running cars, one complete basketcase to either rebuild or use as a parts donor for the other one, a gallon of nitro fuel, a 4 drawer top box full of parts and accessories and extra electronics. At $350, it cost me less than any one of them would have cost new. My ad for dead or dying rC's is doing quite well, call me the RC version of K'Leb!
