I hate to be so very persistent about this, but I had sent this to the list over the weekend, and had not received any answers... since this is something I'd like to rectify, I'm sending it again in an attempt to find a solution Hi, I'm brand new to Linux, and have just recently installed Mandrake Linux version 7.0... a friend of mine had helped me install it, and then just left me here to figure out what he's done... mostly, it's pretty cool with the exception of two things... In text mode, my fonts are real small. In searching around I found a reference that said to include in the lilo.conf file a line stating vga=normal or vga=ask... when I try this, I still get the real small text... I had thought the ask option would display the different modes and allow me to choose, but it never asks, it's always real small... and secondly, upon bootup, I get an error stating: hda: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE ide0: unexpected interrupt, status=0x80, count=2 ide0: reset: success and then it sits there until I hit Ctrl-C... after hitting Ctrl-C I can still operate the system... [newbie] install errors with LILO
I am having trouble installing Air and I think its because of the 1024 cylinder issue. I have a 10gig harddrive. I purchased v6.1 of mandrake and installation went through ok. I would have either had the one complete c driver or c partition plus another primary partition d: at the end of the drive. I am now trying to install v7 and I get errors on creating a boot disk and installing LILO. I have tried various different ways of setting up my harddrive and none are working. No matter what I try I keep getting errors installing LILO and creating a boot disk. One example Ive tried: Ive set this up using Partition Magic 5 and I was so sure it would work: type total used free Pri/Log Cylinder C:FAT32 5859.6 31169.6 2629.0 Primary 0-746 * linux Ext2 2000.3 628.0 1372.3 Primary 747-1001 *:linux swap 133.4 0 133.3 Primary 1002-1018 Extended 1741.4 1741.4 0 Primary 1019-1240 d:spare FAT32 1741.4 13.5 1729.9 Logical 1019-1240 NOTE: D;SPARE IS AT THE END TO PUSH ALL OTHERS UP "BEFORE" THE 1024 BORDER D drive goes through the border. ALl partitions above it are well clear. Gone through the install and in Disk Druid reports: hda1 5859 Win98 hda2 133 Linux Swap hda3 2000 Linux Native hda5 1741 win 98 Looking like the D:Spare at the end is doing its job keeping the linux partitions clear from the 1024 cylinder. How ever, later in the install it gives an error on creating a boot disk and on installing LILO. Then when I finnish and go back into partition magic it gives: type total used free Pri/Log Cylinder C: FAT32 5859.6 31169.6 2629.0 Primary 0-746 Extended 3875.1 2133.6 1741.4 Primary 747-1240 * linux Ext2 2000.2 2000.2 0 Logical 747-1001 *:linux swap 133.3 133.3 0 Logical 1002-1018 unallocated 1741.4 0 0 Logical 1019-1240 I did my own partition prep as the "d:spare" partition has to be at the end to use up the cyliners from 1023 up. But when I go through the install it seems to ignore what Ive done, does what it wants to do clears my empty d:spare partition and uses all free space left, doing this it obviously fails because of this cylinder border. In this attempt. the install changed to an extended partition including d:spare which it changed to "unallocated". Perhaps because its included in the extension the 1024 issue fails it. I read that as long as I have the boot sector well clear of the 1024 cylinder border then I should be ok. Well, in this attempt the linux native has cylinders 747-1001. Well clear. I dont understand why its not working. What am I missing or doing wrong? Ive also used the partition tool that comes with linux mandrake v6.1 and it does the same. I kept teh spare dir at the end, went through the prop using that and it simply merged everything together. since Ive got it installed but cant get in as LILO wouldnt install, what can I do to still boot into linux since its there on my hardrive and I simply cant use LILO?. Ive installed and installed so many times trying so many other partition setups to allow for this 1024 cylinder border and Ive had no luck. Even if I can get into booting linux another way, Im not happy. There is obviously a reason why LILO wont install and Id like to get it sorted out rather than detouring around it. Is there anyone who can give me a suggestion on a partition setup like the one Ive shown that may work? Ive tried both disk druid and fdisk. When I use fdisk I then get an error booting back into windows saying invalid partition. I then have to go back into setup upto disk druid, delete what fdisk did, including all the linux partitions so I can then get back into windows. Oh, and the install fails on creating a boot disk. Every time. It doesnt even look like it reads from the floppy drive at all My pc is a Pentium III, 500mHz, 64MG Ram, one 10Gig drive. It does use On-Board integrated sound and graphics but they are seperate issues yet again, and I got v6.1 installed on here ok. I really would appreciate any suggestions. regards Gina

Marcyou were supposed to have made a rescue diskette (actually a pair of them) when you installed PM. Disc 1 of the pair is bootable. You need to boot that diskette and then set your original drive c: partition as bootable, then windows will again call it drive c: and should be able to boot. Any help with getting Linux to see this Free Space again so that I can re-install would be greatly appreciated. - Mark
[newbie] Crash - Please help to rescue some file
Hi, I have a problem with a hard drive, I can no longer boot on my mandrake. [newbie] Help Me test a theme please!
Greets all. . .Inspired by the rather excellent article in the recent Linux Journal on creating KDE themes i went ahead and gave it my hand. I was wondering if some of you would mind giving it a look and offering some input as to appearance. . .a little background. The theme is called Cyber Space (i actually had no idea there was a theme based on the matrix when i started designing it so im not trying to bite off of anyone else's work:), and basically my inspiro for it was back in the days of green screen terminal command line based internet, tho with linux i can relive those days all owver again(: The theme is in what i would call its first acceptable beta and as such lacks things like Wallpaper, preview and sounds. My main concern is with the gfx looking decent and the color scheme coming up properly. I apologize for forwarding it to the list, but its only like a ~2k attachment so i hope it wont cause any major problems. Thanks all! CSpace.tar.gz

Hello! I'm trying to figure out HOW to boot from a FLOPPY ALONE. I'm in the process of checking file sizes to see if "DOSUTILS" will fit on a floppy and then try to boot to the HD in DOS mode. WILL IT WORK??? I HOPE so. I'm so sick of WINDOWS!!! Can you maybe please forward this to someone who knows?...and Please put me on your Mailing List or I guess I'll just do that at the subscription site... I just know I'm going to have to burn a CD. My friend has one - that's a last resort however, because I'm anxious to check it out! Thanks, Rich Quirk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[newbie] file permissions and pppd
Hello, I would like for a user to be able to use the /usr/sbin/pppd command .. this is so that the user can connect to the internet via a modem using custum scripts. Now .. when i am logged in as user and I issue the command ./usr/sbin/pppd i get the following error: ./pppd: must be root to run ./pppd, since it is not setuid-root. Now, i have tried giving the user permission to execute the pppd command using chmod 555 .. but I can still not execute the command as the user. I then tried to create a group by editing the /etc/passwd file and the /etc/group giving both root and the user permission to execute this file .. i then changed the group for the file by typing in the following command: chgrp .newgroup pppd .. i still could not execute the pppd as user .. i then tried chgrp newgroup .newgroup pppd .. i still could not execute pppd. I do have linuxconf installed on my system .. now after i had changed the group settings manually and then started linuxconf .. when i went to exit linuxconf it said that it wanted to set the group settings for pppd back to root.root. Is there some sort of file that linuxconf keeps that is overriding what i am doing .. or am i doing somehthing wrong??? any help would be greatly appreciated =)

Re: [newbie] URGENT! Windows partion has gone!
first of all, you should use the linux fdisk, as using the one that comes with DOS is nothing else than SUICIDE if you have ext2 partition on your HD. It already has destroyed some of my partitions while I didn't ask him anything. Normally, if you let the installation program handle the LILO installation, you should just type DOS at the boot prompt, and it should boot your window partition. if it doesn't (and that your windows partition hasn't been destroyed!!!), you have to configure lilo, by editing the /etc/lilo.conf file. If you don't know how to do it, juste type man lilo.conf, and it will give you all the help you need to do that. When you have finished to configure your /etc/lilo.conf file, you run lilo to install it, then everything should work fine. PS : if you REALLY urgently need to boot your windows, you can boot with a DOS floppy disk and type fdisk /mbr to restore a windows MBR. But then you'll have to boot your linux with a LILO floppy or something to reinstall lilo and be able to boot both win and linux. first off, your lilo.conf does show your windows partitions other=/dev/hda1 label=windows table=/dev/hda do not boot from a floppy, but when you receive the LILO boot prompt type in "windows" without the quotes of course, hitting the tab key should give you something like this; linuxwindows windows2 based on your lilo.conf. so you should be ok. jon MERCATOR GmbH wrote: -- Forwarded message -- Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 06:28:39 -0800 (PST) From: MERCATOR GmbH [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jpgois [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] URGENT! Re: [newbie] URGENT! Windows partion has gone! (fwd)
Did you use a "server" install or a "custom" isntall when you where installing Linux? This is really importnat to know. The server install and custom install will wipe all existing partitions. The Workstation install will leave any existing DOS partitions. ARG I DID "server" and "custom" install, yes !! :-(( and now?? What now? Can I SAVE my data and/or can I recover this ?? If yes, HOW? If not, What can I do? Can I copy my data to another drive (I can see and access my data via Linux, I have two icons there, hda1 + sda1) and rebuild the DOS partitions? thanks, marc
Re: [newbie] URGENT! Windows partion has gone! (fwd)
first off, your lilo.conf does show your windows partitions yes, I know do not boot from a floppy, but when you receive the LILO boot prompt type in "windows" without the quotes of course, hitting the tab key should give you something like this; linuxwindows windows2 I can ONLY boot from a floppy! When booting without a floppy, it tells me "disk not readable, change disk and hit enter" or something like that... when I boot from floppy, I can only choose "linux" or "rescue"... :-( marc
Re: [[newbie] URGENT! Windows partion has gone!]
you need to boot with the bootdisk you made during install, you did make one didn't you? just let it boot from that and it should boot correctly, do not use the resue boot img do not use the bootdisk that came with the distro. yep, I made one! :-) I can boot with that floppy and get to linux.. but then??? I cannot restore the mbr to boot to windows! :-( tried to change the lilo.conf now.. without much success :-( hh any other idea?
Re: [newbie] URGENT! Windows partion has gone! (fwd)
HOW do I use the Linux fdisk program? When logged in as root in linux, you type fdisk /dev/hda (or /dev/sda if you want to check your scsi disk) Then to see the state of your drive's partition, you type p. It will give you the different partition on your drive, their size, their type, ... If you want to have further details or modify your partitions, you type m and it will give you an index of the command you can use. While in fdisk, you should maybe check that the bootable flag is on the partition you need. (usually the first partition of /dev/hda) PS : if you REALLY urgently need to boot your windows, you can boot with a DOSfloppy disk and type fdisk /mbr to restore a windows MBR. But then I already tried this, but it does NOT work !!! :-(( really? Weird... This is maybe a "missplaced bootable flag" problem but by editing your lilo.conf, everything should come back in order : If you change the line 'boot=/dev/hda3' by 'boot=/dev/hda', lilo will install itself on the MBR and not on the master record of your linux partition. That will solve your problem, I think. When your lilo will be reinstalled this way, you will be able to boot your windows by typing windows or windows2 at the lilo prompt. (depending on the partition on which your windows is installed) so... HOW can I get my Windows to work??? Can I create a new partition from Linux for Windows? I can access and see ALL my files from Linux! I have two icons on my desktop, for hda1 and sda1 (my Linux is on hda3 by teh way..) and clicking on these icons, I see all my Windows stuff. You can create windows partitons from linux, but if you still can read your windows drives, it means that apparently, they have not been destroyed (yoopie! :-D ) Please help me!! I hope that's what I just did... Thanks My pleasure! flupke
[newbie] BOOT DISK-partition problems
Find another pc and create a win98 boot disk and copy a copy files onto it also, you probably already know this but I'll state it for those who may not know. Create a boot disk for the appropriate OS, copy some additional files such as edit.com, qbasic.exe, fdisk.exe, format.exe, and so forth, insert and attempt to boot, fdisk to verify partition is intact, reboot and try to start windows from the boot disk, you'll have to create an autoexec.bat and a config.sys, but this is rather simple, add a few lines such as path, mscdex..etc and see if you can boot to windows, then go into boot magic or whatever boot loader you are using and disable it so you can only boot to windows, then do a good backup and reinstall windows and other services to help have a dual boot system.hope this helpedTony

Re: [newbie] @home connection
You may have to get the DOS driver dsk and boot on DOS and run the setup. There is an FAQ someplace that talks about this. I do not have it in front of me right now, but there is a FULL/HALF mode setting that may need to be changed. Also, if you have 2 cards than you will need to add them to conf.modules. The boot process only finds 1 card. - Christopher Molnar New Enland Business Services, LLC Aetna, Inc. MarcWhat version of windows are you running? How is your bios set for booting, scsi or IDE? Dual booting from both scsi IDE drives may not work well, or at all, on some systems. How was the bios set before you dedicated space on your IDE drives to Linux? Do you have access to a full copy of Partition Magic (4.0 or 5.0)? If so, one of the things I suspect might be wrong on your system is the the bootable status of your bootable windows partition may have inadvertantly gotten toggeled off. I've never changed that, except with PM, so if you can, try it, and read the docs for PM too, the info there is invaluable. Re: [newbie] zip plus with Mandrake 7.0 (Air)
This is a sticky one but I think I can hepl. First I would make a directory under /mnt if there is not one that you wish to be there for the zip100 to mount under. For example I have /mnt/zip250 for my zip 250 drive. Then in my /etc/fstab file I have a line defining what the mount point is, if you don't understand about the fstab file, please write back saying this. In my fstab file I have a line that looks like this. /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip250 auto sync, user, noauto, nosuid, nodev 0 0 the /dev/sda4 is the device what the zip drive actually uses. the /mnt/zip250 is the actual mount point. auto means "automatically mount any kind of file system" sync I forgot but it needs to be there, user means that any user can mount, unmount, read, and write to the zip drive, noauto means do not try to mount the zip drive at boot time, nosuid I forgot but it needs to be there, nodev, forgot, but needs to be there and 0 0 also need to be there. I am writing as if you only have access to your Linux system. If you have access to another Windows PC, you can accomplish the following tasks on your Windows PC. Format a diskette with the MSDOS (or VFAT) filesystem. Copy the following files from your Windows partition to this disk: Command.com, IO.sys, and Msdos.sys. Download and extract Ranish Partition Manager 2.38 onto this diskette. Keep this disk in the drive and reboot the PC. Type "part" to run Ranish Partition Manager. Choose the option to save your MBR to diskette. Now you have your safety net! Format another diskette with the MSDOS (or VFAT) filesystem. [newbie] printing problem(s)
Have a minor g printing problem with 6.1, using my Panasonic KX-P2130 dot matrix printer ('cause my Lexmark 3200 is not supported). I have it set up as an Epson 24-pin, and it works fine with all of the text editors and Maxwell; using printtool, I generate both text and postscript test pages without a problem. But when I try and print email from Netscape, or anything from Corel WP8 or StarOffice 5.1, all Iget is (are? whatever) reams of paper with what looks like a couple of postscript symbols at the top of each page. Not exactly helpful, to say the least -- I have set up the printers (I think) in each applicartion in a number of permutations, with no success. Netscape acknolwledges printing problems in Linux, but doesn;t say what to do about 'em (guess that's one of the reasons AOL bought Netscape, not vice versa... g). Corel and Sun offer generic information, and after a week, haven't responded to emailed requests for help :( . I'd be grateful if anyone could point me to a detailed HOWTO (I've checked the ones with the distribution...nada), or better yet G, suggest how to set up that printer in any one of those applications. Thanks in advance -- got to say I have quickly bcome addicted to Linux. Re: [newbie] URGENT eth0 init. failed
Sorry I'm not a guru, but I can TRY to help you. As the 'automagical' tools don't seem to work, you should try to configure your card 'by hand' : first, you have to load the apropriate driver of your card into the kernel. As I never worked with 3com cards, I couldn't tell you wich one you have to choose. But you will surely find some information in the documentations provided with your card or in /usr/src/linux/Documentations/. Once you know which driver you have to choose, you load it into the kernel by simply typing 'modprobe name_of_the_driver' Then, you have to configure its IP address and netmask. To do this, type : ifconfig eth0 1.2.3.4 to set the card's ip address to 1.2.3.4, and bring it up ifconfig eth0 netmask 255.255.255.0 to set the net mask Then, your card should work ok. [newbie] Failed Installation
Hello, I successfully installed Linux in the following configuration: 1. Make:IBM Thinkpad laptop 2. Model: 600 E 3. Processor: Intel PII 366 MHz 4. RAM: 64 MB 5. Video:NeoMagic MagicMedia256AV 6. Audio:Cirrus Logic CS4610 (per Linux Probe) 7. Kernal Version: 2.2.13-7mdk This was on my work laptop in a dual-boot configuration with Win98 and NT 4.0 using System Commander on a 4 partition, 6 GB hard drive. I had not booted into Linux for about 3 weeks but I recently tried to boot and found that I am not only unable to boot the system, I can't even re-install Linux. The installation gets to the "Setup filesystems" part of the installation and then fails. If I try to use Disk Druid to configure the ext2 partition, I get the error message "Fdisk error: An error occurred reading the partition table for the block device /tmp/hda. The error was: Device not configured". If I use fdisk to configure the partition I get "Partition Disks: /dev/hda - Model (none) - Model (none)" and, upon hitting Return, the Installation process gets stuck. Additionally, after attempting a partition creation using fdisk, I get an error message "Reboot Needed: The kernal is unable to read your new partitioning information, probably because you modified extended partitions...". Note: Both the System partition and the Swap partition were placed in an extended partition in the original installation that worked. This appears to be a problem with the partition table. The only thing I can think that I changed since I last booted into Linux was that I installed Partition Magic 5.0 on the NT partition. The weird thing is that Partition Magic could see the Linux System partition as well as the Swap partition from inside NT. However, Linux cannot see the partitons even after I deleted them to "Free Space" and attempted a new installation. Any help with getting Linux to see this Free Space again so that I can re-install would be greatly appreciated. - Mark

try modprobe 3c509 then try ifconfig if you see a eth0 more than likely you hit pay dirt now you can go into linixconf and tell it which kernel modual to use for eth0 On Mon, 31 Jan 2000, jpgois wrote: Sorry I'm not a guru, but I can TRY to help you. Re: [[newbie] URGENT! Windows partion has gone!]
reinstall partition magic. It should have asked you to make a rescue floppy. If not, there should be the option to create a rescue disk on the cd if you can access it under DOS boot floppy. MERCATOR GmbH wrote: you need to boot with the bootdisk you made during install, you did make one didn't you? just let it boot from that and it should boot correctly, do not use the resue boot img do not use the bootdisk that came with the distro. yep, I made one! :-) I can boot with that floppy and get to linux.. but then??? I cannot restore the mbr to boot to windows! :-( tried to change the lilo.conf now.. without much success :-( hh any other idea?

Both NIC's in my Linux box are setup ok...both return correct info using "ifconfig", and the modem returns correctly in KPPP. What's your default gateway set to? John

Re: [newbie] URGENT! Windows partion has gone! (fwd)
I did not know that you had BootMagic. Follow the instructions for backing up your MBR (a safety net is always a good thing). If you insist on BootMagic, then boot your PC using the BootMagic rescue disk. Restore BootMagic and all is well! (If you didn't create a BootMagic rescue disk, then use the boot disk that I instructed you to create in a previous E-mail and boot your PC with it. Next, change to the BootMagic directory on your Windows partition. Finally run the BootMagic executable file. Once the BootMagic program is loaded, enable the option to load the BootMagic IPL code to the MBR.) (fwd) Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 22:05:56 +0100 Format a diskette with the MSDOS (or VFAT) filesystem. I will try this tomorrow (I am NOT in my office now). I have Partion Magic (and Boot Magic). Can I do this with Partition Magic as well??
