Re: [newbie] numbers lock in kde
I've seen a few 'me too's', so it doesn't look like there will be an answer very soon. Here's a workaround that I found on a Usenet site - not as clean as I'd like, but here it is: edit '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/types/basic' at the end of the file you should see something like the following: type "KEYPAD" { modifiers = shift+NumLock map[None] = Level1 map[Shift] = Level2 map[NumLock] = Level2 map[Shift+NumLock] = Level1 level_name[Level1] = "Base"; level_name[Level2] = "Number"; } If you switch all the 'Level 1' with all the 'Level 2', that should do the trick; at least it worked for me. You'll have to restart your x session, and your NumLock led will still be off on your keyboard, but you will have numbers on your keyboard. When you want the other functions on your keypad, you'll have to hit the NumLock key (and the light should then come on). If anyone knows a better way to do this, please email me with the answer. [newbie] Mandrake 7 - Ram is read incorrectly - Kernel Panic
I have two slight problems, maybe other people are getting the same problem or know of a way around it? o When I first install Mandrake 7, one of the screens says that it only sees 64 megs of ram, but I have 192. My bios confirms this and so does windows, and previous distributions on mandrake. I've tried recompiling the kernel and that did not seem to work. I've also tried specifying the exact amount of ram during the installation and that did not help. This did not happen in the previous distributions. When I compile my own kernel, it seems to not have this prob, but then the networking stuff breaks but thats just probably a configuration problem... question is, Is any one having this problem? If the works, and your system now sees all of your RAM, edit /etc/lilo.conf add append="mem=192M" (use quotes this time) That will boot you with all of your RAM recognized. Re: [newbie] communicator upgrade which linux
2.0 glibc is what you want. However, I would suggest you not bother with compiliing and installing it from a .tar.gz. Instead use a RPM from here: http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHSA207-02.6.0.html to update it. And yes, it will work on Mandrake even though it's from redhat. i am interested in upgrading communicator and notice on the netscape site it lists 3 different kinds of linux 1.2 2.0 2.0 glibc which one do i choose ? -- Anthony Huereca http://m3000.1wh.com Press any key to continue and any other key to quit
Re: [newbie] CDRW drive
I have a HP CD Writer plus (9200 series, 8x/4x/32x) and I've had no problems with it with Linux. I didn't install with it, but I can still access it just fine. So I don't think you're problem is with the CD writer itself. Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has had problems getting Mandrake 7 to recognize and use a HP CD Writer Plus. I am not sure which model it is, only that it is 4x/4x/24x. It is the same drive I installed Mandrake from, but now linux won't recognize it. Does anyone know anything about this? Re: [newbie] For all those who hate Netscrape
While Mozilla is gettign nicer and nicer, it is a bit too buggy yet. Some websites look like crap in it (zdnet.com ign64.com) and there is still just random bugs that pop-up from time to time. But with teh beta release coming up soon, they'll hopefully have more of them ironed out, where it will become more practical. And I do have to admit it is quite nice, not as good as IE, but much better than Netscape. I've been using Mozilla Milestone 14 lately, and it's much better than netscape most days. Re: [newbie] FTP andf Telnet
Hi, I had this problem just two days ago with Mandrake 7.0: Solution was to install the "telnet-server" RPM, it worked immediately after doing this. Unlike other distributions, Mandrake (or RH) split up the telnet package in two RPM´s: telnet-server and telnet-client. Only the telnet-client is installed by default. Can´t help you with FTP, though. Maybe something similar? Out of interest: are you using Windoze to telnet in, and if yes, which client are you using? I found the built in M$ client VERY bad and had to d/l some other client to be able to use vi. Ove Barry Winch wrote: This has to be a case of missing the obvious!! [newbie] Upgrades
Hi Folks! Having used Mandrake6.1 for a couple of months I decided to did deep and buy through Cheapbytes version 7.0, the $1.99 single CD one :-) After a huge amount of hassles because the installation took offence to my hardware (Pentium200mmx, noname Mobo, 64mb ram, and S3Virge PCI) I finally managed to get it running. Now whilst I would in no way want to belittle the great work being done by the Mandrake team and associated Hackers, after looking around it a bit I wonder to myself if it would not have been possible to expand the already cool update system to update 6.1 to 7.0 instead of having to either download a complete ISO or buy a CD. You know what I mean, there is that update Icon on the desktop. Just a thought, for what it's worth. On a totally different subject, the new Installation system is somewhat buggy I think. It seems to occasionally "jump" stages, in particular the rather critical one of root and user password. You can go back to it, but it is a trap for young players, ending up with a fully functional Linux system that can't be logged into :-( Also the package selection tree is a little bit difficult to use as the only way that you can see if you have added or removed packages is by keeping an eye on the total installation size. Another small issue is that if you don't have a floppy drive, even if you select NOT to create a boot floppy, it bugs you for all the rest of the installation that it can't find the drive or something similar... I know that I am being a bit picky, but as this distribution is aimed at lobotomized Windoze users these small bugs could possibly scare the poor dears away. That's all for now folks... Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7 - Ram is read incorrectly - Kernel Panic
There are some pitfalls with SMP kernels. I suggest if you're new to this, that you read the SMP-Howto, and the Kernel-Howto. All HOWTO's are accessible online trough http://www.linuxdoc.org and many other sites. I have a similar setup, except for the network card which is a D-Link DFE528TX O believe (number might be wrong; I'm falling back on my memory here), and the fact I have only 128 MB of RAM, and a 13GB harddisk; UDMA/66 connected to the UDMA/33 bus. Redhat wouldn't find it on the UDMA/66 bus and I found out too late Mandrake does, but don't feel like opening the stuff up again to reconnect it.. I have no problems whatsoever, except for some stability issues which appear to be solved since I swapped the SB Live and the D-link from pci-slot, and some weird kernel messages (very sporadic) about "illegal interrupt vector on CPU0" or something like that. But the default SMP kernel worked perfectly, although I'm running a recompiled stock 2.2.14 SMP kernel now. Perhaps you have selected the wrong module for your ethernet card? Boot the standard UP-kernel (I believe it's installed also), and with "lsmod" see which modules are loaded. Then make sure those are selected when you build a new kernel. On Mar 22 David J. Siu wrote: I have two slight problems, maybe other people are getting the same problem or know of a way around it? o When I first install Mandrake 7, one of the screens says that it only sees 64 megs of ram, but I have 192. I've also tried specifying the exact amount of ram during the installation and that did not help. FIRST, at linux installation (when it asks if you want to configure the net),it recognizes the card and actually it is supposed to make it work in order to download something (crypt...) from an ftp site. It says pcmcia probe found 1 net devices, found driver for 3c589_cs insmod /modules/pcmcia_core.o.insmod/modules/3c589_cs.o ... it finishes installing linux succesfully and restarts.. WHAT i think is that this kernel version (2.2.14-1mdklinus) does't support pcmcia or at list doesn't have the correct modules, because it doesn't even have a "pcmcia" subdirectory (/lib/modules/2.2.14-1mdklinus/pcmcia) where i can find "pcmcia_core.o" and "3c589_cs.o" in order to run: "insmod [directory] pcmcia_core.o" What I tried is: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14-12mdk/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o, and the answer was: "kernel-module version mismatch /lib/modules/2.2.14-12mdk/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o was compiled for kernel version 2.2.14-15mdk while this kernel is version 2.2.14-1mdklinus" BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT MY VERSION (2.2.14-1mdklinus) DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING LIKE "pcmcia_core.o" or "3c589_cs.o" IN ITS LIBRARIES. No X under RH6.1 or Caldera Openlinux Slackware 7.0 installed the FrameBuffer X server for me and it is Perfect. I get all my colors, no flickering, and the edge of the screen is AT the edge of the screen with no futzing with the monitor controls. And at bootup I get a cute little graphic (not ansi) picture of a penguin... But there are some drawbacks... 1. It is a little slower then an accelerated server. 2. It requires support for /dev/fbdev built into the kernel 3. Console mode graphics programs that use the SVGALIB stuff won't work (probably a workaround somewhere) 4. Re: [newbie] CDRW drive
This is one way, but supposedly more things work if it can fake it into being a scsi device. Try the /dev/sd0 approach first. [newbie] mail problems
Greetings! I am new to the list, but not as new to Linux. I just installed Mandrake 7.0, which I am liking extremely well. I have been working with getting the console based mail system to operate so I can conserve resources, etc., but I am experiencing some sort of disconnect that I haven't been able to sort out yet. I intend to use either Mutt or Pine, preferrably the former. Mutt is installed and working, and it will send messages out, which suggests that Sendmail is also working at least in part. I can send messages out to myself at my ISP or Excite. I can also use fetchmail to retrieve the messages from my ISP, and I see them all coming in and registering on the console, but then there is the disconnect. I understand that Fetchmail is supposed to hand the messages off to either Procmail or Sendmail for delivery to my system mailbox. I have installed the latest Procmail and made .procmailrc and .forward files, but apparently nothing is happening. I get an error message when I open either Pine or Mutt to the effect that /var/spool/mail/$USER doesn't exist, which suggests that Procmail/Sendmail hasn't functioned correctly to create the mailbox. So, I see the messages coming down from the ISP server, but they disappear into the ether, I guess. Does anyone have any insight? Is there something specific to Mandrake that would bear on this? Does Mandrake 7.0 have default mail programs it uses? Thanks! Don J. Do good stuff! ___ Get 100% FREE Internet Access powered by Excite Visit http://freelane.excite.com/freeisp

Re: [newbie] communicator upgrade which linux
Lets see if I can remeber now. First try "rpm -Uvh netcape72blahblah.rpm" for both files. If that doesn't work, try "rpm -Uvh --force netscape72blahblah.rpm" for both files. And if it still says it's having conflicts, then do "rpm -e netscape-communicator" and "rpm -e netscape-common" to uninstall netscape, and then "rpm -Uvh netscape72blahblah.rpm" on both new files to install the updated versions. The problem is different versioning. netscape-communictor 7.0 depends on the 7.0 version of Netsape-common, while Netsacpe-common 7.0 needs the 7.0 version of netscape-communicator. So when you try to update just one, it complains as updating it would make the versions uncompatible. i have downloaded netscape communicato 4.72 navigator 4.72 and netscape common 4.72 and continue to get the following errors when trying to install them when trying netscape common i get dependency prob netscape common is needed by netscape communicator-4.70-6mdk netscape-common is needed by navigator-4.70-6mdk even though it's netscape common i am trying to install netscape navigator error : dependency problem netscape-common is needed by netscape-navigator-4.72-6 netscape-navigator conflicts with netscape-common-4.70-6mdk and finally netscape communicator error = dependcy problem netscape-common is needed by netscape-communicator-4.72-6 and netscape-communicator conflicts with netscape-common-4.70-6mdk what are these errors and why does it say i need netscape common to install netscape common ?
