[newbie] where with sane?

2000-05-02 Thread duncan

Can anyone please help

Have sane installed as far as kpackage is concerned but cannot do
anything with it from there.

Do I need to do something after the src rpm has been rebuilt. It says
inreadme go to top level directory and do ./configure then make and then
make installBut where is the top level directory?

I have also tried downloading the tar.gz versions of sane glib and gtk
but get problems with glib version not in path and so not recognized by
the gtk or sane during their attempted configure and make and make
install.

I m surely missing something fundamental.

PLease help before I am insane.

My suggestion would be to resize your windows partition using

Note: Beware the partition resizing feature of Mandrak 7.0, there
are

 hacking.

I just installed Mandrake 7, using the 7.0-2 CD, and had no
problems with the resizing. The internet setup, however

I am having some serious problems with setting up @Home to
work with Linux. I have a D-Link DE220 ISA PnP Ethernet card,
and a Samsung cable modem. The problem seems to be with the
card itself. I set it up in hardware config, then go into network
config and set it up as said in a help file I found on the web
(http://www.mandrakeuser.org/connect/ccable.html)

However, when I restart the computer, it gives a 'FAILED' error on
attempting to load eth0. Any ideas?

Oh, I am using Cogeco @Home.

 I have another box PII 300 128 megs ram 16 gigs but I don't
want to change it till I see if I like it.
You can just start an xinit session (just starting X without any window
manager) by typing xinit on a command line. If you already have a running
X, add the "-- :1" (without quotes) paramter to the command line.
When you have your xinit running, you can run any wm you want from within
the xterm displayed in it. So, if you have blackbox installed, you just
type blackbox in the xterm.

and what is the easiest way to install I went to the site
 and there's 2 kindsSource.tar.gz download
Source.tar.bz2 download

 which do I use?
Those are exactly the same. Only the method to decompress the sources will
change :
with the .tar.gz file, you uncompress it with :
tar zxf Source.tar.gz
or gunzip -c Source.tar.gz |tar xf -

With the .tar.bz2 file :
tar yxf Source.tar.bz2 (I'm not sure of this one)
or bzcat Source.tar.bz2 |tar xf - (this one will sure work)

Whatever file you choose, you will end with a directory with the sources
in it. Usually, you just have to cd to that directory, then run :
./configure
make
su -c "make install"

But it is safe to read the README or the INSTALL file provided with the
sources before doing that.

But if you have a mdk distro, the easiest way would be to install the rpm
package. (Isn't it provided with the mdk CD? I'm not sure, since I don't
use mandrake anymore).

I also noticed that there are not any docs
that I can see for install instructions.
I hope my above instructions will help you. But if it isn't the case, go
to to the blackbox site for more info (http://blackbox.alug.org/)

  I am a newbie but
wanted a faster X session so I would like to try it.
Trust me, you'll have that with blackbox! :-)

it's a bit 'nude' in front of KDE, GNOME, or even enlightenment.
I'd advice you to try it to make your own idea.
If you want to start it without quitting your currently running Xwindow,
just go to a console abd type :
  xinit -e blackbox -- :1
and it will open a new X server running blackbox.

I have an Actiontec PCI modem the directions for installing it in Linux can
be found at www.actiontec.com/support/modems/cwifag.html . As long as yours
is a hardware based modem you should be able to install it the same way.
Another thing you should also check if you are using Kppp is the
Authentication. It by default is set for PAP and I know with my ISP
BellSouth I had to change it to CHAP and if your Auth is set wrong if if
your modem is configured correctly you will not be able to connect.

Yes, 7.0 will detect the SMP automatically during installation and
install an SMP kernel. No worries there.

7.0 doesn't, out of the box, work the with UDMA/66 interfaces on the BP6

it won't let you install on those drives. A bit annoying, since the

 What's mandrake-linux like?

 Is it stable?..
is anything?
i haven't had it die yet, applications and demons will crash from time to

but i haven't had anything kill the kernel yet.

 Configuration easy?
fairly,
few points to look out for,
ide cd-rw 's,
if your bios manufacturer has removed support for the function that tells
you how much ram is in the computer you'll have to set it buy hand.

 Is the powerpack worth buying?
yep,
1:- you get loads of apps so you don't have to download them
2:- the howto's are included which will be a great help if your new to linux
3:- you're supporting the cause.

I'd wait until 7.1 is released,
the kernel should be a lot better and detect more hardware (eg how much ram
you have)
X windows should be quicker and less memory hungry
it should have a lot of the bugs in 7.0 fixed.

 Thanking all in advance.

By default kppp uses /dev/modem as the default modem device. Usually this is a
symlink in your /dev direcory to the ttyS* device which is the actual modem. cd to

more than likly be on ttyS1 (comm 2 in windows).

If it is not there make sure you have a real modem and not a win-modem. It its a

Check that the telnet-server package is installed.
(rpm -qa |grep telnet might help you...)

I have also seen some great things with the security settings. If you are
truly new to Linux, and are just messing around with a home box, I
recommmend using the crackers welcome approach for the first while. It will
give you the freedom to roam through your box without having to stop and
start services all the time.

If you went with HIGH or PARANOID security settings you may have to make
sure that telnet is not commented out in /etc/inetd.conf and that the
computer you are trying to telnet from is listed in your /etc/hosts.allow
file like so=

in.telnetd: xxx.xxx.xxx.0/255.255.255.0 (for an entire subnet)
or
in.telnetd: 192.168.0.2 (for a specific computer addey)

Speaking Freely: Telnet is just not a good option for any kind of computer
comms. Very easy to eavesdrop on and collect information about the network
you are on. Passwords and usernames are snatched with ease, and before you
know it, YOU could be locked out of your box. I seriously recommend going
to ssh1 or ssh2. There are quite a few programs out there (very few are
free) that will allow you to do this. If you are attempting to connect from
a windows box, PUTTY.exe is a great start, although not very robust...its
free :)
Secure CRT is my prefered ssh client from a windows enviroment..you can test
it out for 30 days on www.vandyke.com

If you have any more questions about this...I am not an expert, but I am
learning just as you and would be happy to discuss security issues and
whatnot.

[newbie] Install Woes

2000-05-02 Thread meijin

Hello:

I am attempting to install Mandrake on a P-266 laptop (with 32 megs of
RAM). This is one in the "sub-notebook" range, so the FDD is external and I
do not have it (got the unit used). I do have the external PCMCIA CD-ROM
drive. But, the CD is not bootable.

I tried following the directions using the RAWRITE program, but cannot seem
to get that to work. Looking around on the web page I saw about Linux4Win
and got that partially working (although a dual boot was not exactly what I
was looking for). But when it reboots and gets to the point where it wants
the PCMCIA support to load from the CD, it tells me to insert the PCMCIA
support disk. I don't seem to have one that will work properly?

Can anyone help me with this?

As a last resort, I do have other machines set up through a hub here. Could
I share the drives (FDD and CD-ROM) and load across an Ethernet link?

Thanks!

David

/dev/hdc is the name of a whole hard drive. Instead, you have to mount a
partition inside this HD. For instance : /dev/hdc1 for the first primary
partition in this drive.

Also take into account that, if /dev/hdc is your CDROM, you mount that
through /dev/cdrom.

Re: [newbie] Supported network cards??

2000-05-02 Thread Rick

Yes it is... I had a problem with it at first.. then ended up having to
manually start it each time...

the second time I did a complete clean reinstall of Linux 7.0 it found the
card and now it loads the drivers at boot up...

if it doesn't recognize it.. I figured out.. by luck ... to type this in a
command line...

insmod 3c509
ifconfig eth0 up

then it would come up.. then I had to do somethings in teh Drakconfig to
get the server etc and all listed.. but it was working after I did that..
:) but now it does it by itself.. not sure how.. but it does..

anyway..long story short.. it is supported.. it is the same one.

IN KDE:
from a term run netcf

when the screen comes up find your ppp0 adapter
check its properties...somewhere in there is a checkbox that says Allow any
user to disconnect/connect this service...or something like that..

another thing you can do is log in as root (stay in console)
establish the connection either manually: #ifup ppp0
or via Kppp or whatever you are using in KDE
shudown KDE
then hit the keys CTR-ALT and F2
it should bring you to another log in screen..log in as a user and away ya go
:)

this assumes that you are not booting to a GUI prompt but rather a console
prompt.

Same problems I had when I started off with linux

[newbie] Trouble running programs

2000-05-02 Thread Hopper

Here's the most frustrating aspect of Linux:

In KDE (or Gnome, etc...), I will sometimes double click on something to start it and
nothing happens. No error, just nothing.

One incident involved the distributed.net client. Untarred and unzipped it, intalled
into the home directory (I was logged in as root) and then double clicked on it.
Nothing happened. I was quite frustrated. I checked top, it wasn't running.

A while later, I tried running it in the console. It worked fine.

Why would something run in the console, but not under KDE or Gnome? Are many programs
like this?

 fairly,
few points to look out for,
 ide cd-rw 's,
if your bios manufacturer has removed support for the function that tells
you how much ram is in the computer you'll have to set it buy hand.

  Is the powerpack worth buying?
 yep,

shure is

1:- you get loads of apps so you don't have to download them
2:- the howto's are included which will be a great help if your new to linux
 3:- you're supporting the cause.

+ your getting two printed 'manuals'

I'd wait until 7.1 is released,
the kernel should be a lot better and detect more hardware (eg how much ram
 you have)

The 7.0 does that - but why it detects mine 256 Mb as 254 I don't understand.

X windows should be quicker and less memory hungry
it should have a lot of the bugs in 7.0 fixed.

That sounds great - as mentioned above I have 256 Mb (and a K6-3 400), but when
I am working with photo-scans (25 - 30 Mb files) in GIMP, it constantly uses al
of the ram, so I get 'delayed' in progress. Sometimes it seems as if it don't
'clear' memory when I moves on to the next picture - I have only 2 undo-levels.

Welcome to one of the 'quirks' of Mandrake 7.0 ( I presume that is what
flavor you have). If I recall, if you don't select 'Custom', and
'Development' during install, or otherwise explicitly specify to install
the compiler, you don't get it. If you are downloading an *.rpm file,
you should be able to install that no problem, assuming you have all the
dependencies (required files/libraries,etc.) satisfied.

Have sane installed as far as kpackage is concerned but cannot do
 anything with it from there.

Do I need to do something after the src rpm has been rebuilt. It says
inreadme go to top level directory and do ./configure then make and then
make installBut where is the top level directory?

The 'src' indicates that you have to compile it, before you can use the
program. So use Kfind or equivalent to look for anything with sane - I have
'sane-1.0.2' in my 'home-dir'. Enter that and run './configure', 'make'
and as root 'make install'. When you has done, try to look at the Xsane too
- most resent version is 0.58. The GIMP user manual describes rather well,
how to use it under GIMP.

I have also tried downloading the tar.gz versions of sane glib and gtk
but get problems with glib version not in path and so not recognized by
the gtk or sane during their attempted configure and make and make
 install.

Personally I find the tar versions easyer to use - you know at once where
the source is installed.

I m surely missing something fundamental.

Try to make a ./configure - it comes up with an error messages if it can't
'go trough' and then return them here (you can direct it to me, if you
like)

Xconfigurator has let me manually input all the above info and still can't
find a workable resolution. All I want is 800x600. In spite of the fact that
my monitor supports 1280x768 while in Windoze.

The BIOS allows me to allocate Auto, 4Mb or 8Mb to Video RAM.

Any suggestions?? I'm about desperate. I wanted to get Linux running on the
box so I could travel and learn with it.

Is there a way to find the above or do I have to reinstall the OS?

Re: [newbie] Installation problems

Rodrigoit is not the i486 iso image. The i486 iso image
is only available for download from Mandrake mirror sites.
Nobody has commercially burned the i486 iso image onto a CD.
The way you can tell if it's 486 is that is that all of the
rpms will have 486 as part of their file name. for instance,
here's the filename of the first rpm in the
/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/ directory on a 7.0-2 CD.
AfterStep-1.7.142-5mdk.i586.rpm, but if that CD were an i486
iso image CD then the filename would be
AfterStep-1.7.142-5mdk.i486.rpm instead, as would all of the
binary rpms on the CD.

I have been using SO for over a year (even the Win version, before I tried
Linux). I've been using Applixware 5 since February. SO "feels" much larger
and bloated, but does a much better job of reading, converting, and managing
Excel files, especially large ones. Both do a superb job of handling Word
files. Neither seems capable of reading the other's docs, unless they are
saved as Word format, or RTF, or some other common form.
My "guess" is that you'll like whichever you get used to. They both create
their own documents very capably and offer a variety of tools to help you get
work done.

Re: [newbie] Mirc

2000-05-02 Thread Fran Parker

Not that I know of. However, on the Tucows.com site, go to the Linux
software section.
There is a section for KDE, then a category called IRC, where you will
find KVIRC.

This is a very cool program, that I love (especially after I figured out
how to change all the
colors to what I wanted.) Very similar to mIRC but different too. .. It
is for Linux :)

You will also see a section under KDE, a section for messengers, etc.
too. You will find
similar stuff under the GNOME section.

KVIRC is the best I have seen for IRC. If you like AOL's IM, there is a
GAIM program
you would enjoy. There is a very nice ICQ clone as well. Several of
them out there.

If I remember correctly each of these are available in .rpm format.

Go with the most penquins.

Hope that helps,
Bambi

The whole thing goes just find (the modem answers to a query) until I
tried to connect... then the following message appears:

localhost pppd[]: couldn't find any secret (password) which would
let it use an IP address.

What am I doing wrong? Could you please answer to this question one more

 - Showed the mandrake directory.
 - Chose customized and remaining options.
 - (I've got 2 HDs in the computer...the plan being to load linux onto the
blank one so...) I formatted a HD, giving it everything it wanted / mount
point and swap with at least 1200 MB for the / . ...but to know avail. No
matter what packages I choose or how small I set the size limit, I continue
to get the error above (and it's not always 555 but sometimes larger or
smaller.)

[expert] Re: [newbie] SMP Support

2000-05-02 Thread Tom Wike

Steve,
I have just recently upgraded to a BP6 Motherboard and installed
Mandrake 7.0, followed the instructions at this web site:

http://netllama.ipfox.com/stepbystep.htm

under the 'ULTRA66' section, installed without a hitch on a drive
connected to the UDMA/66, no problem :)

It did detect SMP and installed the proper kernel, detected my
SoundBlaster Live! and USR External 56K modem also.

Christopher wrote:

Howdy people, first off - Mandrake is my fav distro and I've tried quite a
few - bravo! Now, to my prob. Does the installer for Mandrake (I have 7.0)
detect for SMP support or is that something I add after installation? My
hardware is a Abit BP6 with two 500 mhz Celerons, 128 megs of RAM, VooDoo 3
3000 AGP, ect. If it would work in SMP mode, I'd be very very happy :-)
 Thnx!

 ~Christopher

Yes, 7.0 will detect the SMP automatically during installation and
install an SMP kernel. No worries there.

7.0 doesn't, out of the box, work the with UDMA/66 interfaces on the BP6
board though. It'll make a boot disk during installation for you, but
it won't let you install on those drives. A bit annoying, since the
patches for the HPT366 interface have been available since the 6.1
days...
