[newbie] Kernel update
I just used Mandrake Update in version 7.1 for the first time and everything went smoothly (I assume). It updated a lot of packages, but the one I am most interested in is the new kernel 2.2.16-9mdk. I looked in /etc/lilo.conf and there are two new entries: * Add by install-kernel image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-9mdk label=2.2.16-9mdk root=/dev/sda6 read-only optional * Add by install-kernel image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-9mdksecure label=2.2.16-9mdksecure root=/dev/sda6 read-only optional I assume that since both still contain the "mdk" in their name that they have not been installed yet. Although, when I look in KPackage it shows the kernels installed. Or, does this mean that the Mandrake Updater actually installed them? If not, exactly what so I need to do to get the secure kernel installed properly. After I install the new secure kernel do I still need the old kernel and the regular 2.2.16-9? And if not, how do I remove them? Any suggestions appreciated, Victor

Mandrake will automaticaly mount your media for you, whether it's HDs, zips, cds, etc. I am using a dual boot system, windows and then of course linux. On the windows partition I have two drives, C:\ and D:\ Well when I am running Linux, I can see both of the windows partitions and can even access the files across the partition (from Linux onto windows). But when I boot into Windows I can't see the D:\ drive. I can access the C but can't even see the D. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do to resolve this? Sean 'Bout all I can do is make some vague suggestions from memory. I had the same situation sometime ago when I installed 7.0. My C: is hda, the whole drive. I wanted to set aside some fat32 space on hdb, ie, of the 8 gig drive, 5 for Linux and 3 for fat32. No problem, Mandrake did the deal and even formated the 3 gig space as fat32. BUT, when I booted Windoze I expected to see C: and the new D: It wasn't there. Long time ago, I was advised to use DOS utilities on DOS partitions, Linux utils on Linux partitions. So, I booted to a DOS (not DosMode) prompt** and ran dos' FDISK. Best I can remember, the solution was as simple as setting the partition (the 3 gigs on hdb) as 'active'. Then windoze could see it, and called it D: ** easiest way to do this for W9x is edit MSDOS.SYS and change BootGUI=1, to BootGUI=0You'll then boot to a dos prompt, typing WIN starts Windoze. You can also use TweakUI to do this. -- ~~ Tom Brinkman[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[newbie] Sound Card Problem
First let me say , WOW. This Mandrake Install is the best Linux install that I have come across. It's a huge welcome after trying to work with FreeBSD. The install went well with one exception. My sound card is not working. I tried using DrakConf and it responded with "generic" but then when the little sample sound test is playing I can not hear the sound. Is there a command that will tell me what type of card I have ? I really have no idea. The laptop was given to me awhile back. [newbie] LM 7.1 destroys working Linux installation
hello ppl ! i recently decided to upgrade to mandrake 7.1 air, from ver 6.1. i got the gpl-version, 2 cd´s, booted from cdrom and everything went fine. chose "upgrade" and then installation process told me that it was searching for packets which need to be upgraded and that i was later able to chose which of them i would like to upgrade. after a while setup finished searching and simply started installing packages - without prompting me to choose ! i didnt want to interrupt the installation process because a feared linux wouldnt work at all if i did, so i left it installing.mandrake air intalled 2 hours (!!) packetsafter that i thought i would get the chance to do all the settings like user managment, printer, x, and the most important one : creating a boot disk !!but mandrake didnt do anything of these things..i simply saw some dialog boxes rushing over my screen, and finally a last dialog box told me that linux was now completly installed and that i could now reboot my computer.. i was somehow amazed about this..but i restarted...and guess : after choosing "Linux" from my win nt bootmanager i only got 2 characters to see from LILO.: LI nothing more..completly dead..i hoped to be able to start it from my previous boot disk.from version 6.1..i inserted ..linux began booting from floppy and finally i got somrthing like : insert root floppy and hit enter ! i didnt have some other boot floppy from linuxthis was the only disk i created during setup of ver. 6.1 so i hit enter and got after some seconds : kernel panic : no init found... i really dont know what was going on..i had a full operating and functionally linux 6.1which took me 6 months to set up..and now everything is gone.. i would really appreciate if someone could tell me what the hell mandrake air did with my WORKING LINUX INSTALLATIONaargh.--- please anybody tell me whether it is completly fucked up or whether theres a way to recover or to access 7.1... btw..it didnt fuck up my win98 installation..at least..some good thing.. --quaylar ...a resignated linux newbie

So now I'm thinking that the iso image file itself is corrupt, but after searching lots of newsgroups, I can't find anyone else who's having the same problem, so somehow I doubt that's it. Re: [newbie] Sound Blaster Live
Hi Jim, If Paul's suggestion doesn't work, you may have to go thru this list of things - I did, to get the sound functioning 100% in 7.1. I had CD sound but no WAVs - also, had those odd permission problems. Anyway, here's the laundry list: 1. Upgrade to latest kernel 2. recompile emu10k1 driver under latest kernel 3. download latest alsa library from Mandrake update - does not get updated automatically with the Update function 3. download and install latest detect library, HardDrake and sounddrake from the HardDrake site - latest sounddrake has dependancies of detect, alsa and HardDrake, so sounddrake is the last to be installed - I used the RPMs. 4. Now run sounddrake again - you may have to find it in the /sbin directory and run it directly - there was (is ?) a small configuration bug in HardDrake that it does not look in the correct place for the sounddrake file. There is a HardDrake .rc file that needs to be updated manually, until a fix comes out for that. I am pretty sure after all this the sound worked and the device permissions problems went away - I tried so many things - I hope I don't have to re-install or anything ! cheers, philomena At 06:50 AM 7/7/00 +0200, you wrote: On Thu, 6 Jul 2000, Jim Dwyer wrote: I'm having a lot of trouble getting my sound card to work in 7.1 I got the new drivers from Creative OpenSource and compiled and installed but still can't get the darn thing to work. Re: [newbie] Install
Alf The only ways that I can think where hdc will not be touched at all are 2. 1) Do the Mandrake install in Expert mode do not install either Grub or Lilo and boot Linux from a floppy. Even doing this it still may want to write the hdc partition info. 2) Completly disconnect your hdc, cable and power (you will also have to either disconnect your burner or set it to master). The Mandrake install will now find only a system with 1 hd. When the installation completes you can reconnect your hdc. You will be able to boot Linux with Grub but you will need to use a boot disk for hdc. If you do not mind me saying as long as you have backed up your data on hdc ther is really no reason to go to these extrems. But,of course that is your choice. Charles, I was able to get PM. When I ran it though, i couyld see two files. There was a FAt which was labled as my C drive in windows. Then there was the remainding of my hard drive all in one clump. And rather that saying what type of drive it was, (whether FAT32 or Linux) it called it "type 85." I thought that was sorta strange since that was where the linux and D drive are but clumped them together. Then, if i were to boot to linux, sure enough all the drives are still there, the C, D and linux. But what i tired to do was in windows, the clump called type 85 (which is where the D and linux are) i tired to set as Active like you suggested and then rebooted. Unfortunately it didn't have an effect. Do you know if there is something else that I can do? thanks for your help thus far. If it is just an empty Fat partition you can boot to your 7.1 installation CD, go through to the partition utility, delete D, and resize C to take back the space. After it has been written to disk cancel the installation.and reboot your system. You will now have only one Windows partition but it's size will now be that of C D combined. [newbie] Monitor Display is Offset
Hi Guys, I have Linux Mandrake 7.0 Deluxe, basically installed and running except for peripherals (to be dealt with later) and the display on my monitor is offset to the right about 1 inch ( the left side border is too large?) I have tried XFdrake , XFdrake --expert and Xconfigurator and they each provide a small window that changes screen resolution and color depth BUT NOT the position of the display on my monitor. xf86config has a lot of adjustments in it but not how to adjust the display location/mode. xf86setup which I have used in SuSE is not found on my Mandrake setup. xvidtune which is on my Mandrake system DOES adjust the horizontal position correctly and I can log on and off as different users and the display remains correct. However, when I reboot back into Linux the display is offset again. How can I make the display adjustments in xvidtune become permanent? Or what other adjustment utility should I use? My testing computer was built by Touch Systems, a PII - 233 on ASUS P2L97 with 96m RAM. The video card is a Matrox Millenium G200 AGP w/ 8 mb. The monitor is NEC Multisync E500. This is a multi-boot machine with WinNT4, OS/2 4, and now Mandrake 7.0 formerly SuSE 6.3. The physical monitor adjustments have worked with Windows, OS/2 and SuSE and I am not prepared to alter the physical setting of the monitor and then diddle with the other operating systems software settings in order to accommodate Mandrake. There must be a way to get Mandrake to accept the a horizontal adjustment in display setting and then retain the adjustment through a reboot. [newbie] C compiler cannot create executables
Hi, This is my first post as I just subscribed, so I'm sorry if I'm going over old ground. I recently installed Mandrake 7.0 on a new disk in a PII 233Mhz machine. I am trying to learn how to install packages from a "tarball" but run into a problem when I try to run ./configure, it fails with the following error:- "checking whether C compiler (gcc) worksno configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables" I looked in the configure log and found the following, however I have no idea what it's trying to tell me, am I missing a file (conftest or conftest.c)? "This file contains any messages produced by compilers while running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake. configure:562: checking for extra includes configure:593: checking for extra libs configure:692: checking host system type configure:713: checking target system type configure:731: checking build system type configure:790: checking for a BSD compatible install configure:847: checking for -p flag to install configure:870: checking whether build environment is sane configure:908: checking whether make sets ${MAKE} configure:954: checking for working aclocal configure:967: checking for working autoconf configure:980: checking for working automake configure:993: checking for working autoheader configure:1006: checking for working makeinfo configure:1031: checking for a BSD compatible install configure:1125: checking for a C-Compiler configure:1131: checking for gcc configure:1237: checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works configure:1253: gcc -o conftestconftest.c 15 /usr/bin/ld: cannot open crt1.o: No such file or directory collect2: ld returned 1 exit status configure: failed program was: #line 1248 "configure" #include "confdefs.h" main(){return(0);} " I'd really appreciate any help, I've already "verified" that gcc is installed correctly, but have no idea where to go from here! Re: [newbie] Upgrading to 7.1 (Netscape stuff)
If you have room somewhere save the entire /nsmail folder somewhere, and the /netscape folder also. You can then transplant the entire /nsmail folder back when the install is finished, and copy back what ever Netscape files you find you have need of. The file that controls your mail filters is called mailrules, and that file is in the .netscape dir. As is your bookmarks.html file and also your newsrc and neww.yourhost.com file. [newbie] Updating Kernel

Having worked on Compaqs I would suspect that it IS a winmodem. While many have odd configurations like IRQ10, the fact that it is on COM2 does not mean it is a real (completely self-contained) modem. Is it detected by Linux as a "communications device"? -Gary-

RE: [newbie] Monitor Display is Offset
1) If you have a newer monitor (2 years old or so) then you can merely save the settings to the Monitor's RAM after adjusting it. Next time Linux comes up, it will switch to the appropriate mode. 2) If you have a REALLY old monitor, you'll need to be sure that Linux is running at EXACTLY the same screen res and refresh rate as your NT/Windows settings... Thus if you have your monitor set at 1024x768x85hz (doubtful if you have an old monitor!) you'll need to set Linux to use the same refresh rate... clock rates follow logically... You'll need to hand edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config so that the timings are the same... if you cannot do this from XVidtune. You can also try re-configuring XFree86. Select a "lower" monitor than what you have. Normally "X" tries to drive the monitor you specify at the highest possible frequency. Selecting a more median monitor will effectively lower the refresh rate at a given resolution and get you closer to where you need to be. -JMS |-Original Message- |From: Ralph Sanford [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] |Sent: Friday, July 07, 2000 4:57 PM |To: Newbie Mandrake List |Subject: [newbie] Monitor Display is Offset | | |Hi Guys, | |I have Linux Mandrake 7.0 Deluxe, basically installed and running except |for peripherals (to be dealt with later) and the display on my monitor is |offset to the right about 1 inch ( the left side border is too large?) | |I have tried XFdrake , XFdrake --expert and Xconfigurator and they each |provide a small window that changes screen resolution and color depth BUT |NOT the position of the display on my monitor. | |xf86config has a lot of adjustments in it but not how to adjust the |display location/mode. | |xf86setup which I have used in SuSE is not found on my Mandrake setup. | |xvidtune which is on my Mandrake system DOES adjust the horizontal |position |correctly and I can log on and off as different users and the display |remains correct. Re: [newbie] Updating Kernel
Actually, those two new kernels were downloaded when I ran Mandrake update, after the initial installation of 7.1. So, they were downloaded as rpm's (?) from Mandrake's mirror site. But, I think that the kernel rpm's still have to be installed, although I don't know if this means they need to be compiled. Let me take that back, I know they don't have to be compiled because that is why the RPM format exists. It is a precompiled package of any particular source code. The thing that I do not know is if I only need to run the command "install-kernel" or "install-kernel 2.2.16-9mdksecure"? Then, is all I need to do is reference that particular kernel as default in /etc/lilo.conf or GRUB? Although, I did find (Late last night) fairly detailed documentation on the Mandrake website for compiling and installing new or custom kernels. I think that I'llgive them a thorough read through and just follow the directions from the point after compiling the source code for a new kernel. Re: [newbie] C compiler cannot create executables
Linux-Mandrake actually has extremely detailed documentation on practically everything dealing with Mandrake, including compiling and installing new kernels. The overall Reference guide is at: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/guides71/en/mdkrefguide/index.html And the section specifically pertaining to kernels is at: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/guides71/en/mdkrefguide/compiling.html If you are looking for in depth explanations of anything having to do with Linux, then The Linux Documentation Project is what you are looking for. Here's my problem, I have a cable modem which runs into a Linksys 4 port router. From there an RJ-45 runs to a hub and then out of the hub and Rj-45 runs into my computer. I can't seem to get access to the internet. Both my ISP and Router use DHCP and i'm clueless as to what to put. When i go to configure i select eth0 for my NIC and the right driver is also selected. What do i put for PrimaryName.domain, IP (this is tricky cause my router uses DHCP) and Netmask. Do i just leave them blank. Also, do i need to set a gateway and if so, do i put down the IP address for my router or the gateway my router uses from my ISP. Anyone else confused? Oh well ANY help at all would be greatly appreciated. Maybe if i get this fixed i'll be able to get my sound card workin too. Jim
Re: [newbie] Seeking Tutorial on compiling Kernel
Linux-Mandrake actually has extremely detailed documentation on practically everything dealing with Mandrake, including compiling and installing new kernels. The overall Reference guide is at: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/guides71/en/mdkrefguide/index.html And the section specifically pertaining to kernels is at: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/guides71/en/mdkrefguide/compiling.html If you are looking for in depth explanations of anything having to do with Linux, then The Linux Documentation Project is what you are looking for. They maintain the Linux HOWTO's, and more in depth books on Network Administration, security, etc. If you want to compile a kernel or know exactly what goes on in kernel creation, video cards, monitors, databases, etc. the Linux HOWTO'S are the best source. These documents are extremely well written and are described in fashion that any beginner, novice, and expert can find useful. Here are a couple of mirrors for it : http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/index.html http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html For the HOWTO specifically dealing with kernel compilation and customization: http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html I hope this helps (I'm doing my first new kernel tonight), Victor excalibur wrote: Hello, I've been using Linux Mandrake for about a month and a half and it's great, though I've much to learn of it. Does anyone know of a website with a good how-to on compiling the kernel or even a good book that would cover the topic? I'd greatly appreciate it. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [newbie] C compiler cannot create executables
Please forgive my previous post, I accidentally sent it to the wrong message. Victor Steven Cook wrote: Hi, This is my first post as I just subscribed, so I'm sorry if I'm going over old ground. I recently installed Mandrake 7.0 on a new disk in a PII 233Mhz machine. [expert] Sound Device
Well, I had a few things going on with my new install, so I just re-installed from disc. I still am having problems with configuring my Soundblaster PCI512. I noticed yesterday that someone posted a URL for the linux/unix sound drivers from Creative. I would appreciate it if they could post it again. I still get device or resource busy when I try to configure the card. I have tried installing OSS from disc, to no avail. This thing is driving me nuts. Any help appreciated!
