[newbie] VI Question and Building Pine

2002-01-02 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hello All,

I have a couple of questionshopefully you
will be able to answer them ;-)

 1) When I use VI on Unix, in order to get the
system command, I hit Shift-Q, then I can write, quit,
etc. However, when I do this, I don't get the system
command. Also, when I ssh into my server from a
Windows ssh terminal and use VI, I get garbage on the
screen, regardless of the file. Any idea?

 2) I downloaded Pine from the University of
Washington so I can do mail from a ssh. The
instructions say to type build lnx in order to get
it to work. However, when I type in this command, it
says it can't find the command build. I look in the
directory and I see a find a file called build* I see
that asterisk in many files. What does that mean and
how do I access the build file?

 Thanks for everyone's help.

[newbie] CVS and SSH

2002-01-02 Thread Paul Zarson

I am trying to set up a CVS server using SSH as defined by
http://www.wincvs.org/ssh.html and I use the version of SSH as described by the
instructions. Now, I set up my ssh keys as described by using name@server, etc. Now,
when I finalize the instructions and try to log on without a password, I still get an
error. I check the logs and it says the server is refusing the keys. Anyone know
anything about this problem? Do I need to configure my server a certain way?

Because I am going to do only local uploads / downloads to this server, I have the
following key sequencing:
ssh-keygen -C paulz@athena -f ./.ssh/identity
Is this valid?

Hi Charles, I have never just undone Bastille, I just rerun the
InteractiveBastille and it should reset the iptables. I have used urpme to
delete it from my system and then reinstalled from scratch, but don't think
that changes the iptables, you would have to remove them also. HTH

reinstalled Mandrake just to check it) it starts filling the trees and
when it gets to the security site, it stops at 26% (every time) and
freezes. I have to kill the program. So now, basically, I can't update
my computer except by getting rpms and using kpackage. Anyone else had
this problem and any suggestions on how to fix it? And no, I can't get
Mandrake 8.1 to work on this computer, so don't suggest that.

I have Mandrake 8.0 installed on a Dell Inspiron 2500. I run Mandrake
Update, and setup a security update site. As soon as I do that (and I've
reinstalled Mandrake just to check it) it starts filling the trees and
when it gets to the security site, it stops at 26% (every time) and
freezes. I have to kill the program. So now, basically, I can't update
my computer except by getting rpms and using kpackage. Anyone else had
this problem and any suggestions on how to fix it? And no, I can't get
Mandrake 8.1 to work on this computer, so don't suggest that.

 Thanks!

2002-01-02 Thread Michael Viron

My question now is what version of Mandrake are you using? If you are
using 8.1, the dependencies are a lot different than 7.x (ie, a 7.x rpm
won't work properly on 8.x, and a 8.x rpm will give off all kinds of errors
on a 7.x box)

[newbie] TV card suggestions?

2002-01-02 Thread Michel Clasquin

Hi all

My TV was hit by a lightning surge and has entered TV-heaven :-( If it is
beyond fixing I may consider getting a TV card for my 'puter rather than a
new TV. I don't really care about frame-grabbing etc: I just want to watch
the occasional program, and I don't care if it is fullscreen only.

Can anyone suggest a hardware/software combo that works well, easily and
cheaply (pick any two) with Mandrake? We use the PAL TV setup where I
live, if that matters. Oh, yes, and my system started out as mdk 8.0, but
is by now best described as a Cooker special ...

TIA

Also, am I fighting a losing battle - will Linux work with just card

Re: [newbie] can not read acrobat files

2002-01-02 Thread Derek Jennings

That application is kghostview
I assume it needs ghostview installed to work so it is worth checking that
Ghostview is present. It is also worth checking how your documents look in
Ghostview.

You should be able to view your documents with Ghostview if you right click
on them in konqueror file manager. It should offer you a choice of several
viewers. If it does not then just select 'Open with' and then type gv in the
application select window.

You could also go to the adobe site and install Acrobat reader. However
personally I find Ghostview much nicer to use. For example the Adobe Acrobat
reader cannot even rotate the page. Sometimes you do find some pdf files that
cannot be read in one or other of the viewers so it is useful to have more
than one available.

If you want to use a different application as the default vewer then just
open KDE control CentreFile BrowsingFile Associations and then either
add/delete applications or change their precedence order.

A lot of people are having that problem as Texstar remarks here
http://66.69.180.165:8080/article.php?sid=1055mode=threadorder=0thold=0
It seems to be related to the servers rather than your computer so updating
to 8.1 would not help.

To remove your current non functioning mirror use urpmi.removemedia

If it is any consolation my own updates are working perfectly. I am using the
sunite.se server. Maybe it would work for you too?

Well surgery on / is very difficult, because you cannot unmount it from
a running system. You have several options...

Method A:

If /usr is a subdirectory of / instead of a separately mounted
partition, you can move that to the second disk if there is room--Here's
how:

1. Put in your second disk

2. boot

3. when you get to the GUI run Mandrake Control
Center=Hardware=MountPoints

4. When diskdrake comes up, save your partition table to floppy and make
a partition on the second disk called /spusr ,,, When you exit, make
sure you answer the save changes to /etc/fstab with a yes, and also
make sure you format and mount the partition.

5. after exiting diskdrake, bring up a terminal and

$ su
password(your root password)

# cp -a /usr/* /spusr
# kedit /etc/fstab
change the line where /spusr is defined to /usr save and exit
# mkdir /oldusr
# mv /usr /oldusr
# umount /spusr
# mount /usr

Almost done--now recover the space

# rm -r /oldusr -f

And now you should have much roon in /

Method B:

It may be that there isn't sufficient room on the new drive or that /usr
is already separated.
Either...
1. Make room for / by moving those things right after it (by Method A)
2. Install the rpm ext2resize from your distribution disks using
Software Manager
3. In a terminal as root run the command
ext2end / +(blocks to add) (this can be done while it is live and mounted)
OR
separate /var from / which will also create space (method A)

Almost any other moves will require a reinstallation.

i have more consistent success with 'xpdf', in kde you can configure the
filetype by right clicking on a pdf file so it opens with this instead (you
may have to install it of course!) my guess is that some later version of

and others don't, but that is just a guess

[newbie] KDE Startup Sound

Sound has never worked as it should on my 8.1 with
SB Live Value, but it's worked well enough to do
what I want (for instance, using mpg123 or ogg132
instead of xmms, etc.). Things are still fine, but
I'm regularly expiencing something strange that I
thought I ask about.

When startx into KDE, I hear no startup sound. But
if, later in the session, I play a song, like with
mpg123, the KDE startup sound plays all of the sudden.
It doesn't affect the music playing at all. It's just
weird.

Any ideas?

[newbie] Conflict between Printing Sound in LM8.1

2002-01-02 Thread Marcia

Dear All,

I have been having a long struggle getting my ethernet, sound, and printing
all working at the same time. I have studied all relevant files, how-to's,
and asked many questions but so far no answer that has worked. I do have a
clue now. My sound module is not loaded when I start up. It worked fine in 7,
7.2 and 8 but now in 8.1 it only works when I put sb into the /etc/modules
file. After I do that then my printer does not work. My printer and ethernet
work just fine without sound but the printer and sound will not work together
so far. This tells me there must be a conflict somewhere however I cannot
tell where it is. I have checked the /proc/ioports, interrupts, and dma files
as well as all others that could be relevant yet cannot find the conflict.
This has been so baffling. I have the ESS1868 sound card which works well
with the sb sound module. My printer is a brand new HP Deskject 940c which
works great as long as I do not install the sound. The same thing was
happening with my old Epson Stylus Color before I got this new one. Does
anyone have any ideas here? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Marcia

Firstly, scsi emulation is necessary for cd writing, thats why your cdrw
is listed twice (once with scsi emulation on /dev/scd0). It should have
been the same when you were using ML8.0. Check that /etc/lilo.conf (make
a backup copy before editing) has:
append= hdc=ide-scsi
(assuming your cdrw is hdc) which will load the scsi emulation at boot.
You can also add your cdrom drive there as well, which will allow cd
burning apps to read from your cdrom drive and write to your cdrw drive
(eg. when copying cds):
append= hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi
(assuming your cdrom is hdd)
You will need to run lilo for the change to take effect: /sbin/lilo

Secondly, if you're using the standard kernel with ML8.1 (2.4.8-26mdk),
supermount is broken in that kernel. But you can TRY to mount it with
supermount as I think others had some success (not me tho) - in a terminal
as root supermount -i enable without the quotes.

If supermount doesn't work for you, then again in a terminal as root
supermount -i disable without the quotes. Then try mounting your cdrom
as root in a terminal with mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom
(without the quotes). You can change your /etc/fstab file as well from
supermount to auto (again, make a backup copy before editing).

I don't know about the error in your boot log so if you're still having
problems perhaps someone else can help you.

[Note: Supermount is fixed in the newer kernels, so I suppose you could
install a newer kernel. Be warned: do NOT update your kernel but INSTALL
it with rpm -ivh kernel-package_name.i586.rpm - see the archives]

Sounds like a good excuse to me to buy a
bigger monitor ;-)

But admittedly, there may be another solution.
Is it just a problem with fonts, or is everything
big? Perhaps the screen resolution got reset.

If it's just with fonts, try using the Control

Civileme

Well Barbara, here's another method. I prefer it, 'cause I'm no great
hand at all this command-line wizardry. Unfortunately, I can't give you
the exact information, 'cause I'm sitting at an OS/2 computer right now
(my wife is using my linux-box !), but you will get the general idea :

Somewhere in your /root directory ( you have to be root ) you'll find a
file called something like urpmirc. It does only contain two lines. The
first line is denoted with a #-sign and tells something about removing
the second line. Do it. Save the file. Then restart Mandrake Update and
you'll be offered the opportunity to reload the list of mirrors. Then
change or delete your current mirror and choose another one. Personally
I prefer ftp.sunsite.se, but maybe that's because I live in Denmark.

I did it it this way, 'cause I had the same trouble with my
preconfigured mirror (ftp.stealth.net). Try a mirror close to you. Good
luck.

Well, I finally got SoftwareUpdate to work again. Browsing through the

I'm of the school If it ain't broke, don't fix it! -- is this update
really necessary? I mean everything except AC97 sound recording works very
well. Would you advise that I skip this update? Is it necessary?

I'm a bit confused by the additional kernel stuff that's included with the
update, i.e.:

Kernel-source, kernel-linus 2.4, kernel 2.2 -- Do I upgrade all, or only the
2.4 items?

Presently I'm running the stock LM8.0 kernel 2.4.3-20mdk. Any advice would be
greatly appreciated. I don't want to mess up my system that's working great
for something that isn't necessary.

(incorrectly AKA simply OpenOffice). The newer OpenOffice.org builds are
faster and more stable than the SO beta, but they are missing a few (mostly
unimportant) SO-only features. Give it a go; it has worked very well for me.

Sure does. I forget what the POP3 is, but is on the site. I have never
really tried it in Kmail. So i will not make any promises. But I do know I
have alot of users on my network that do it through Outlook.

i still have no experience with it as i dumped hotmail a long time ago in favor of

the keyword there is 'Outlook'. from what i heard is that hotmail uses pseudo-POP3

dynamic ip address. I noticed that windows(before I set up a gateway)
thinks my domain name is name.vc.shawcable.net where name is the name I
gave the computer. Is this ok to use? Anyone on vc.shawcable.net could
  have chosen the same name.
  Thanks

There are several possible solutions for you. The main thing you need to
do is make sure you have a valid domain name like myserver.mydomain.org,
where myserver is the actual hostname, mydomain.org is the domain name,
and myserver.mydomain.org is the fully qualified domain name. The reason
for this is that many mail servers refuse to relay or even receive mail
from servers for which they con't do a dns lookup. A dns lookup requires
having your server registered with a domain, thus the need for a sully
 qualified domain name.

name.vc.shawcable.net might work, as long as your ISP maintains a dns
entry for that host name. To test this, have someone out on the Internet
try to ping or traceroute to your system. If they can resolve the domain
name into an IP address and find you, then everything is ok.
Otherwise, you will need to register a domain, either a permanent
domain name, or a subdomain of a public domain name provider like
dyndns.org. I use dyndns.org, and they work fine. They allow you to have
either a dynamic or static IP address, and give you a host name of
myserver.dyndns.org. My server is sildara.dyndns.org, and you should be
able to point your web browser to my server and see a boring web page.

There are other things to be aware of, like the possibility that your
ISP will block certain ports (especially port 80, because of the Code
Red worm from a few months back). Also, depending on how your cable
modem works, you might need to do some special configuration to allow
your server to be visible to the Internet.

Do some more reading of the docs, and if you have more questions, just
 post them.

Are you using KDE desktop? If so then click on the internet Connection icon

Try www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html. You'll find information on

[newbie] How do I get a Wine app to run from icon?

2002-01-02 Thread Fred Fraley

Running Mandrake 8.0, KDE 2.1.1, wine 20010305
Gray haired grandfather ( so be gentle:-) started with Apple //e, DOS
experience back to 3.3, WIN to 3.1, new to really using Linux, though I
installed it all the way back to Slackware and Yggdrasil from floppies
(kernel 0.9something as I recall) Wow, what progress!!
My current problem:

I can open Agent from a terminal (Konsole) with the command line
/mnt/windows/program\ files/agent/agent.exe

I tried that as a script (never wrote a script before).
did chmod -e agent
did chmod a -e agent
added #! to beginning of line
and other items from various books I have lying around.
I am shown as the owner. User, group, and all have read and execute
permissions. User also has write permission set.
Tried checking needs terminal to run.

Terminal ends up with error message
Gdk-Warning **: locale not supported by C library

I came to the conclusion that command won't work alone because I must have a
terminal session open to execute the command line from. As Run in DOS
Window (Don't be shy about correcting that assumption, because I think I
already addressed that above)
So I tried Plan B. Create new link to application on desktop. Set
permissions as above.

Command line as above returns
Couldn't launch /mnt/windows/program\ files/agent/agent.exe

Command line
Konsole -e /m-e /mnt/windows/program\ files/agent/agent.exe
flashes an open window and closes it. Task bar shows Agent, changes to
Konsole, and disappears.

Command line
xterm -e /mnt/windows/program\ files/agent/agent.exe
returns
Can't execvp /mnt/windows/program\: No such file or directory
Interesting that the window stays open, the error appears to be quite
different, and the error appears to occur at the \, which here is a release
for the following space in the command line and seems handled with aplomb
with the other approaches..

So I am becoming tired, confused, frustrated.
Hints greatly appreciated.

Fred

well, you have to load the modules first. You need to install lm_utils (or

Looking at my mountpoints, I see:

/dev/sda /mnt/zip
/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip2

With the zip2 I access the zip drive, no problems.

Problem is, I have a printer plugged in to the back of the zip
drive. It seems the zip is SCSI and the printer is parallel. Is it
possible for both of these to work in 8.1? I thought I had the printer
working when I printed a test page (though I'm out of ink so I
couldn't see the output), now after some fiddling I can't get anything
out of the printer. (I'm pretty sure this is because I mounted the zip
incorrectly before.)

I may try disconnecting the zip to see if the printer will work
without it tomorrow when I can think straight.

Please help keep the world clean: others may wish to use it.

thanks your concern, I reinstall by force, it was be solved.
the main reason I download newer gcc or c++ related package(rpm or tgz)
is because my first try hello.c can not print (printf(hello world);
it let me worry about bug in c compiler or c++
passing 4 or 5 days intense discussion it is not compiler's error, it
can print on csh-but our default is bash , which is the problem. Some
friend point me out there is a mailing discuss about it at last year's
April cooker, mandrakesoft know this issue but I did not find their
website' errta have 8.0 to fix it.

if any one know how to get dispatch bash's source code so we can
further discuss how can modify it, please contact me-I ever tried to
dispatch gcc 's source code but not success-in some of my email list to
newbie or expert by rpm -bp gcc.spec.

Re: [newbie] NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 200: What am I missing?

2002-01-02 Thread Paul Rodríguez

This may not be much of an answer, but I have had success downloading
the source rpm's instead of the pre-compiled ones. If your files are
already editted, maybe it's worth a shot?

 Hi gang,

My new computer is up and running (it's been periodically dead but
 that's another story...and a bit long...when it's all sorted out I'll do
 a post mortem for y'all:-).

I don't know whether my NVIDIA card is working correctly. I have a
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX200 w/32 mb RAM installed in the AGP slot. Mandrake
8.1 installed the generic NVIDIA drivers. I went through the material on
Mandrake User and went to the NVIDIA site and grabbed and installed
 NVIDIA_GLX* and NVIDIA_kernel-1.02313...(revision 20, using the version
for Mandrake 8.1 with the 2.4.8 kernel). Installation seemed to go OK
but I did get some warnings that the drivers were conflicting with some
already installed MESA drivers (which I know nothing about). The msgs
told me that those (Mesa) drivers were being renamed so as to not
 conflict.

Then, per Mandrake's and NVIDIA's instructions, I modified the
XF86Config-4 file to change driver 'nv' to 'nvidia' and to include a
 line to

 Load 'glx'

When I reboot the X-server I get the NVIDIA splash screen, and, to my
unpracticed eye, the performance seems a little 'snappier'.

Tuxracer won't load, however. Here's the message I get from the console:

Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
*** tuxracer error: Couldn't initialize video: Couldn't find matching
 GLX visual
  (Success)

I have also tried installing some KDE screensavers, specifically Morph
3D (GL) assuming that they use 3D graphics. That particular screensaver
does not seem to be available to me.

Have I missed a step? Left something out? Configured things incorrectly?

I've run through the full NVIDIA documentation and seem to have the
files it says I should have.

 TIA.
