[newbie] VI Question and Building Pine
Hello All, I have a couple of questionshopefully you will be able to answer them ;-) 1) When I use VI on Unix, in order to get the system command, I hit Shift-Q, then I can write, quit, etc. However, when I do this, I don't get the system command. Also, when I ssh into my server from a Windows ssh terminal and use VI, I get garbage on the screen, regardless of the file. Any idea? 2) I downloaded Pine from the University of Washington so I can do mail from a ssh. The instructions say to type build lnx in order to get it to work. However, when I type in this command, it says it can't find the command build. I look in the directory and I see a find a file called build* I see that asterisk in many files. What does that mean and how do I access the build file? Thanks for everyone's help. Paul __ Do You Yahoo!? I am trying to set up a CVS server using SSH as defined by http://www.wincvs.org/ssh.html and I use the version of SSH as described by the instructions. Now, I set up my ssh keys as described by using name@server, etc. Now, when I finalize the instructions and try to log on without a password, I still get an error. I check the logs and it says the server is refusing the keys. Anyone know anything about this problem? Do I need to configure my server a certain way? Because I am going to do only local uploads / downloads to this server, I have the following key sequencing: ssh-keygen -C paulz@athena -f ./.ssh/identity Is this valid? I've been thinking that MKNOD is what I should be doing, rather than MAKEDEV. MODPROBE doesn't give me an SDA1, but I do have an SDA. I'm curious: how do you determine those major and minor numbers? Is this something to be found in the UsbView output? Or is this limited to IDE and not USB? Also, am I fighting a losing battle - will Linux work with just card readers that do not have more than one 'slot'? That is, is a card reader that can accomodate both CF and SM doomed to failure? tester wrote: tester wrote: Maureen L. Thomas wrote: I am using Mandrake 8.1. Re: [newbie] can not read acrobat files
That application is kghostview I assume it needs ghostview installed to work so it is worth checking that Ghostview is present. It is also worth checking how your documents look in Ghostview. You should be able to view your documents with Ghostview if you right click on them in konqueror file manager. It should offer you a choice of several viewers. If it does not then just select 'Open with' and then type gv in the application select window. You could also go to the adobe site and install Acrobat reader. However personally I find Ghostview much nicer to use. For example the Adobe Acrobat reader cannot even rotate the page. Sometimes you do find some pdf files that cannot be read in one or other of the viewers so it is useful to have more than one available. If you want to use a different application as the default vewer then just open KDE control CentreFile BrowsingFile Associations and then either add/delete applications or change their precedence order. A lot of people are having that problem as Texstar remarks here http://66.69.180.165:8080/article.php?sid=1055mode=threadorder=0thold=0 It seems to be related to the servers rather than your computer so updating to 8.1 would not help. i have more consistent success with 'xpdf', in kde you can configure the filetype by right clicking on a pdf file so it opens with this instead (you may have to install it of course!) my guess is that some later version of acrobat makes pdfs that can't be read by the kde viewer since some pdfs work and others don't, but that is just a guess bascule On Wednesday 02 January 2002 6:21 pm, you wrote: When I click a pdf it starts up something called PS and PFD Viewer, in wich I can see the page numbers in the left of the window. [newbie] Conflict between Printing Sound in LM8.1
Dear All, I have been having a long struggle getting my ethernet, sound, and printing all working at the same time. I have studied all relevant files, how-to's, and asked many questions but so far no answer that has worked. I do have a clue now. My sound module is not loaded when I start up. It worked fine in 7, 7.2 and 8 but now in 8.1 it only works when I put sb into the /etc/modules file. After I do that then my printer does not work. My printer and ethernet work just fine without sound but the printer and sound will not work together so far. This tells me there must be a conflict somewhere however I cannot tell where it is. I have checked the /proc/ioports, interrupts, and dma files as well as all others that could be relevant yet cannot find the conflict. This has been so baffling. I have the ESS1868 sound card which works well with the sb sound module. My printer is a brand new HP Deskject 940c which works great as long as I do not install the sound. It should have been the same when you were using ML8.0. Check that /etc/lilo.conf (make a backup copy before editing) has: append= hdc=ide-scsi (assuming your cdrw is hdc) which will load the scsi emulation at boot. You can also add your cdrom drive there as well, which will allow cd burning apps to read from your cdrom drive and write to your cdrw drive (eg. when copying cds): append= hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi (assuming your cdrom is hdd) You will need to run lilo for the change to take effect: /sbin/lilo Secondly, if you're using the standard kernel with ML8.1 (2.4.8-26mdk), supermount is broken in that kernel. But you can TRY to mount it with supermount as I think others had some success (not me tho) - in a terminal as root supermount -i enable without the quotes. If supermount doesn't work for you, then again in a terminal as root supermount -i disable without the quotes. Then try mounting your cdrom as root in a terminal with mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom (without the quotes). You can change your /etc/fstab file as well from supermount to auto (again, make a backup copy before editing). I don't know about the error in your boot log so if you're still having problems perhaps someone else can help you. [Note: Supermount is fixed in the newer kernels, so I suppose you could install a newer kernel. Unfortunately, I can't give you the exact information, 'cause I'm sitting at an OS/2 computer right now (my wife is using my linux-box !), but you will get the general idea : Somewhere in your /root directory ( you have to be root ) you'll find a file called something like urpmirc. Then restart Mandrake Update and you'll be offered the opportunity to reload the list of mirrors. Then change or delete your current mirror and choose another one. Personally I prefer ftp.sunsite.se, but maybe that's because I live in Denmark. I did it it this way, 'cause I had the same trouble with my preconfigured mirror (ftp.stealth.net). [newbie] net appliance, or diskless terminal?
Hi, I'm building a computer to be used as an internet appliance basically. An old computer (PII 266) I'm connecting to the network for someone to browse the internet and write email. I have all the parts inclusing a new hard drive (5400rpm), but it occured to me that perhaps it might be beneficial to run this as a diskless terminal. What are the benefits/drawbacks of this? There will already be a server/gateway running. Would it run slower or faster as a diskless terminal than as a full machine connected to the network? Will it be easier or harder to maintain? I noticed that windows(before I set up a gateway) thinks my domain name is name.vc.shawcable.net where name is the name I gave the computer. Is this ok to use? Anyone on vc.shawcable.net could have chosen the same name. Thanks There are several possible solutions for you. The main thing you need to do is make sure you have a valid domain name like myserver.mydomain.org, where myserver is the actual hostname, mydomain.org is the domain name, and myserver.mydomain.org is the fully qualified domain name. The reason for this is that many mail servers refuse to relay or even receive mail from servers for which they con't do a dns lookup. A dns lookup requires having your server registered with a domain, thus the need for a sully qualified domain name. name.vc.shawcable.net might work, as long as your ISP maintains a dns entry for that host name. To test this, have someone out on the Internet try to ping or traceroute to your system. If they can resolve the domain name into an IP address and find you, then everything is ok. Otherwise, you will need to register a domain, either a permanent domain name, or a subdomain of a public domain name provider like dyndns.org. I use dyndns.org, and they work fine. They allow you to have either a dynamic or static IP address, and give you a host name of myserver.dyndns.org. My server is sildara.dyndns.org, and you should be able to point your web browser to my server and see a boring web page. There are other things to be aware of, like the possibility that your ISP will block certain ports (especially port 80, because of the Code Red worm from a few months back). Also, depending on how your cable modem works, you might need to do some special configuration to allow your server to be visible to the Internet. Do some more reading of the docs, and if you have more questions, just post them. Dave Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Thanks to you I've now got 3 temp and 3 fan sensors running as well as a bunch of voltage sensors. Very nice. You need to install lm_utils (or lm_sensors liblm_sensors1 on newer versions). Then do a locate lm_sensors and cd to it (/usr/share/doc/lm_sensors-2.6.2/doc/ on mine) and run sensors-detect. It will guide you from there. then reboot and run gkrellm and set them up in it's config. -s =_1010025643-11608-3029 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] NTFS Partition Not Mountable
Which version of Windows is it from? If it is from Windows 2000 / XP, it won't mount because it uses a newer NTFS than is supported by the current kernel release (I think they support up to NTFS 4 read, and (very experimental) write). [newbie] Zip and parallel printer
Looking at my mountpoints, I see: /dev/sda /mnt/zip /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip2 With the zip2 I access the zip drive, no problems. Problem is, I have a printer plugged in to the back of the zip drive. It seems the zip is SCSI and the printer is parallel. Is it possible for both of these to work in 8.1? I thought I had the printer working when I printed a test page (though I'm out of ink so I couldn't see the output), now after some fiddling I can't get anything out of the printer. (I'm pretty sure this is because I mounted the zip incorrectly before.) I may try disconnecting the zip to see if the printer will work without it tomorrow when I can think straight. Re: [newbie] NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 200: What am I missing?
This may not be much of an answer, but I have had success downloading the source rpm's instead of the pre-compiled ones. I went through the material on Mandrake User and went to the NVIDIA site and grabbed and installed NVIDIA_GLX* and NVIDIA_kernel-1.02313...(revision 20, using the version for Mandrake 8.1 with the 2.4.8 kernel). Installation seemed to go OK but I did get some warnings that the drivers were conflicting with some already installed MESA drivers (which I know nothing about). The msgs told me that those (Mesa) drivers were being renamed so as to not conflict. Then, per Mandrake's and NVIDIA's instructions, I modified the XF86Config-4 file to change driver 'nv' to 'nvidia' and to include a line to Load 'glx' When I reboot the X-server I get the NVIDIA splash screen, and, to my unpracticed eye, the performance seems a little 'snappier'.
