Re: [newbie-it] lan da konquero
Ciao, Germano Ciao, Germano Il 16:49, mercoledì 27 febbraio 2002, hai scritto: vaiconlinux wrote: Salve a tutti, ho due pc in rete (Mandrake 8.1), funziona ping, telnet, ftp rlogin,..

Forse manca qualcosa o qualcosa è configurato male. Grazie ancora e ciao, Fer.

[newbie] missing swap partition?
Hello, I've been having problems with my LM8.1 install, I *think* I've figured out what's gone wrong, but I'd like a second opinion. The problem: I can't use my PC for more than an hour or so. I'll be happily running multiple applications, when suddenly the HD will trash about like mad, and KDE virtually locks up (becomes so slow as to become unusable). Sometimes a ctrl+shift+alt+del will log me out and save me, at other times I've had to switch off the machine after 1/2 hour spent looking at a fixed screen. This problem seems to happen more quickly if I have several applications on the go, so I thought of a memory leak/memory management problem. BTW, I can't track it down to any one application - it seems to happen whatever I'm using. So I've read through the mails on this list, and tried out a few things in console: - 10:09pm up 3 min, 2 users, load average: 1.02, 0.45, 0.17 48 processes: 47 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped CPU states: 14.7% user, 7.3% system, 0.0% nice, 77.8% idle Mem: 126644K av, 120536K used,6108K free, 344K shrd, 31876K buff Swap: 0K av, 0K used, 0K free 48260K cached PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND 1571 richard 12 0 3964 3964 2900 S 1.9 3.1 0:00 artsd 10:12pm up 6 min, 2 users, load average: 0.51, 0.38, 0.19 54 processes: 53 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped CPU states: 13.3% user, 4.6% system, 0.0% nice, 81.9% idle Mem: 126644K av, 123684K used,2960K free,1048K shrd, 4104K buff Swap: 0K av, 0K used, 0K free 65220K cached PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND 1769 richard 19 0 1052 1048 836 R 1.9 0.8 0:00 top 1 root 8 0 104 10436 S 0.0 0.0 0:04 init 3 root 9 0 00 0 SW0.0 0.0 0:00 keventd 4 root 19 19 00 0 SWN 0.0 0.0 0:00 ksoftirqd_CPU0 5 root 9 0 00 0 SW0.0 0.0 0:00 kswapd 6 root 9 0 00 0 SW0.0 0.0 0:00 kreclaimd 7 root 9 0 00 0 SW0.0 0.0 0:00 bdflush 8 root 9 0 00 0 SW0.0 0.0 0:00 kupdated 9 root -1 -20 00 0 SW 0.0 0.0 0:00 mdrecoveryd 91 root 9 0 252 252 140 S 0.0 0.1 0:00 devfsd 880 root 9 0 240 240 124 S 0.0 0.1 0:00 syslogd 888 root 9 0 988 988 332 S 0.0 0.7 0:00 klogd 982 daemon 9 076 76 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00 atd 1018 root 9 0 580 564 384 S 0.0 0.4 0:00 xinetd 1188 root 9 0 100 10032 S 0.0 0.0 0:00 gpm 1244 root 9 0 164 16464 S 0.0 0.1 0:00 crond 1268 xfs9 0 4152 4152 576 S 0.0 3.2 0:01 xfs 1376 root 9 064 64 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00 mingetty [richard@localhost richard]$ free total used free sharedbuffers cached Mem:126644 123532 3112 1048 4104 65220 -/+ buffers/cache: 54208 72436 Swap:0 0 0 [richard@localhost richard]$ - The above is an example from the other night, I repeatedly ran 'top' then 'free'. It certainly looks like you are on the right track. Do you have an entry for a swap partition in your /etc/fstab? It should look something like this /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0 You can use diskdrake to create a swap partition without having to reinstall BTW: Unless you like getting disc corruptions avoid switching off the machine. Use Ctl+Alt+F2 to get a console then as root shutdown -h now If you get really stuck use SysReq keys to shut down. Thanks in advance Jim, you are not the first person to upgrade the kernel and thus lose everything It's kind of confusing, that the update - option includes the kernel But to be honest, there ARE several warnings around, especially on the Mandrake homepage Kernels should be installed, not upgraded Luckily, there's a remedy, so it's not a real disaster Let me quote Civileme from memory : quote Drop in your install CD and boot When you get to class of install, pick expert and click the right button, the one that reads Update Select no packages It will fuss and cluck for a while figuring it has no packages to update Then it will install your original kernelIn less than 10 minutes you are done /quote Maybe my memory missed something, but that's the general idea If in doubt search the archive for something like kernel and update HTH Kaj Haulrich Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Just when I boot the machine and pass the HD detection, the machine starts reading the floppy, but I do not get the Mandrake screen or a prompt. I just lose the monitor, the monitor gets ofline, it gets no signal from the computer. I tried anyway and typed linux -fb and hoped for the best, but no luck. I get the feeling that it doesn´t got the driver for my graphic-card or monitor. I even tried the other.img for older drivers but it didn´t work. By the way its not a CD-RW. I have the system up and running just fine, I just don't like having to rely on a boot disk to boot up...not that I have to reboot that often. :) TIA Bryan Bryan, IMHO Grub is not very mature, at least I had a headache figuring it out and never got it working properly anyhow. Try this : run KDE or Gnome, open Control Center, become root, click Boot, then Boot Config. Now, in the upper, right corner, click Configure, select lilo, and then the place where your MBR shall live, i.e. /dev/hda. Make additional adjustments to your liking, save everything and exit. That is supposed to be all. As an extra precaution, I would open a console, become root once again, and then type the command : /sbin/lilo (everything withour the quotes,of course). The output from lilo should tell you if everything is OK. If you have further trouble, please post your /etc/lilo.conf and /etc/fstab to the list. Re: [newbie] How to install RPM's?
You uninstalled Gnome? If that's what you did, you didn't have to. The program should be in /usr/bin/jpilot. Try 'whereis jpilot' As for connectivity, do you have a /dev/pilot object? JPilot will look for the Palm there, hence the command making a link to it, and then changing the permissions. I didn't put the commands anywhere - they just needed doing as a one-off. Also, when you are ready to use JPilot, it seems to need both the button in the app and the one on the cradle pressing to work. Richard Dan Butler, Thursday 28 February 2002 12:49 am: Thanks! [newbie] Kernel Upgrade List Archives
Hello everyone, I am back to Mandrake Linux after a short hiatus. I had to reinstall again due to what turned out to be errors on my hard drive. I think I have them isolated now if so I should have a stable system. It already looks much nicer on my KDS 17 flat screen monitor. Mandrake handled it combined with my old TNT card and gave me all graphics resolutions, which is a remarkable change from my old generic 14. I of course lost all my email and web bookmarks this time. I have decided to do occasional backups of these files to my windows drive just in case. I learned somewhere that a better working kernel than I am using (stock 8.1 2.4.8-26(?)) is 2.4.8.34(?) which is supposed to fix some security issues, virtual memory, etc. I had an email with directions for upgrading my kernel. Actually it was for something else, it was to someone who had just reinstalled and was wanting to do something else (update software manager lists?). But the person was directed to first install the newer kernel. I think the message went something like: First go to someplace.addy.outthere and download filex.afile and follow the directions on http:www.webaddy.ady to install it alongside your old kernel. Then go to mandrake update(?) and get the latest whatnot.files. And _then_ go to nVidia's site (or mandrakeuseronline?) and get the latest drivers for kernel 2.4.8-34(?) and install according to the directions at http:anothersiteIforgot.ady. And _then_ go do whatever the original person wanted to do because the computer is now updated. Of course since I lost the message(s) that is about all I remember now that I find myself in the same situation. Anyone care to send help? This brings up my other question: Is there a website with important archived information from this list for people with faulty memories ( hard drives) such as myself? Re: [newbie] Acer 342T soundcard problem.
Thanks guys, ;-) Still got problems here. When I set mount quiet, execute lilo and reboot, no mixer in /dev and cdroms is in /dev. When I set append=devfs=nomount quiet in /etc/lilo.conf, after lilo and reboot, the mixer does appear in /dev, but this time cdroms disappeared. In this case, KMenu-Multimedia-sound-audio mixer still prompts no permission to /dev/mixer and check if module compiled into kernel. I am sure I have permission to /dev/mixer. And the module IS compiled into kernel coz lsmod gives out: Module Size Used by snd-es193812176 0 (autoclean) (unused) snd-pcm 0 (autoclean) [snd-es1938] snd-timer 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm] snd-mixer 0 (autoclean) [snd-timer] snd 0 (autoclean) [snd-es1938 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-mixer] soundcore 0 (autoclean) [snd] So when mixer exists in /dev, I have full permission to it, the module is in the kernel. The only thing I don't understand is why it's NOT used by anyone) /etc/modules.conf reads: pre-install pcmcia_core CARDMGR_OPTS=-f /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start alias usb-interface usb-ohci alias eth0 eepro100 alias sound-slot-0 snd-es1938 Anything wrong here? I get the feeling that it doesn´t got the driver for my graphic-card or monitor. I even tried the other.img for older drivers but it didn´t work. By the way its not a CD-RW. Other ideas?? /Edvard Hmm... Well Edvard, here I have to ask you a very silly questions - no offence intended ! How did you create the boot-floppy ? - I suppose here, that you did it from Windows, 'cause that's the way most people do it, considering the fact that it's practically impossible to purchase a PC here in Scandinavia without that virus pre-installed. Now, simply copying the boot-image from the CD to floppy won't work, because this only puts some bits into a FAT (DOS/windows) filesystem on the floppy. The floppy needs to be raw to be bootable. To accomplish that, you must use a special gadget, called rawrite, located on the CD in dosutils\rawrite.exe (in dos/windows-notation). Here's how : * insert the CDROM, then open the icon My Computer, right click on the CDROM drive icon and select Open * go into the dosutils directory and double-click on the rawwritewin icon * insert a blank floppy in the floppy drive * select D:\images\cdrom.img in the Image File field (assuming that your CDROM drive is D:, otherwise replace D: as needed) * select A: in the Floppy Drive field then click on Write. To begin the installation, insert the CDROM in the drive, as well as the boot floppy if necessary, then restart the computer. OK - If all this is trivial to you, this is a newbie-list, remember ? - That aside, if you've already fabricated the floppy correctly and it doesn't boot, please return to the list and we'll try to walk you trough from here. It would be nice to have further information about your system, though : especially your harddisk-setup (is a dos/windows-partition already present ?, do you want to preserve it ?, how many GB does it contain ?, is it an IDE or a SCSI disk ?). What's the output from fdisk (if it's there) ? Edvard, I think your problem is of common interest, so I've taken the liberty to publish this thread to the list. HTH Kaj Haulrich Bryan, to me everything seems to be OK in your fstab and lilo.conf , just wondering : why 2 swap-partitions ? Not that it matters, though.
