[newbie] USR/3Com Sportster 005686-03 56k

2003-04-02 Thread Anonymous
I have looked at the USR page entitled Configuring
U.S. Robotics Modems for use under Unix-Type Systems
... but I can't understand the instructions.

I'm using kppp as the dialer, and still have the init
strings that were suggested by Stephen Kuhn (btw,
Stephen, I am unable to send email to you ... comes
back with an error message)

...could it be that I need to change the init string
to fit the external modem?

Is there anyone on this list who is using this
external modem, and who can suggest a workable init
string?

Here is what is happening: Modemconf detects the modem
on ttyS0. Modem Query goes well

The connection messages are as follows:

ATF C1 D2 E1 Q0 V1
OK
ATM0L0
OK
ATDT (tel #)
CONNECT 26400(or28000)/ARQ

At this point, with starting pppd at the bottom of
the Script Debug Window, and Logging on to Network
... on the Connecting to: window, it starts over
(modem ready etc) ... continuous loop.

Any ideas on solutions???

Thanks.

Rita

Re: [newbie] USR/3Com Sportster 005686-03 56k

2003-04-02 Thread Anonymous
I made a tiny change in the modem settings ... changed
it from 57600 to 38000 or therabouts ... and got
online.

I was happy to be surfing until I realized the
persistent symtom was there ... as with the internal
PCI hardware modem ... first session online for hour
and 20 ... then got message operation times out
attemtpting to contact ... second session, 45 minutes
then no surfing ... can disconnect reconnect just
fine, but it is not optimal obviously. Actually very
annoying, unacceptable, yada yada ..

Tried it with the 2nd of 3rd systems, so I know it's
not a system problem; it's clearly linuxmandrake (was
happening with redhat too) and this motherboard/modem
... The modem works fine under windows according to
the modem vendor, but on a different system (don't
know why I bothered with that test) The system vendor
claims that the PCI modem did not work on windows, but
another modem did work (who knows what these guys
really found out, I can't really watch over their
shoulders ... and they don't want to be responsible
for any of this).

I do wonder whether mandrake 9.1 will fix this problem
(also I was using the core mandrake 9.0, not the
boxed or cd version)

[newbie] used external modem (sportster model 0701)

2003-04-01 Thread Anonymous
Earlier on this list, I was asking many questions
about my USR hardware PCI modem that was seen by
Mandrake 9.0, but that acted inconsistently once
online.

I've had my system and modem troubleshot, but the
modem works fine in windows (according to the modem
vendor, but not the system vendor), so I'm stuck with
a modem that may work in future versions (?), and if I
buy mandrake 9.1, rather than have 9.0 downloaded (?).

In the meantime, I found a used external modem ... I
plugged it in as is, turned it on, and used modemconf
... it said there was no modem ... what's the initial
impression? Are the 8 or so dip switches in back
relevant here?

I saw a thread about this earlier in February, but the
solution had to do with bios/windows (?), which does
not apply to my situation ... MD 9.0 installed only
...

[newbie] modem/browser/genl flakiness on ONE machine

2003-03-25 Thread Anonymous
I have a general question: if I get the Mandrake 9.0
installer to reformat/erase the drive,
would that get rid of any possible virus, that might
be causing wierd Mozilla behavior?

I've installed another PCI modem, and the flaky
connections continue
Also, this ISA modem is doing great under Mandrake 9.0
... been online 20 hours ... so I looked at Control
Panel/Information/Network interfaces ... on both of
these machines ..

This isa machine has one for PPP0 and LO ... while the
PCI modem machine that's acting wierd only has LO ...
is that significant? Also, is it significant that on
the PCI machine, IRQ 11 is what is designated for both
the modem and the video?

Any solutions?

I'm confused about the model number ... the model

Also, this type of problem may mot be the modem, but

Re: [newbie] 56k modem

2003-03-22 Thread Anonymous
For some reason, after an x amount of time, I can't
surf anymore ...

Let's say that it's not a bad modem ...

I've gone through all the kppp settings and made the
values as large as possible ... not sure what all of
the values mean, but ...

what command do I do to get relevant files/logs that
might have information about the connection?

Would that be the first step to find out? Or will I
have to get some kind of log viewer downloaded and
installed?

I'm using Mandrake 9.0.

Does this seem like a reasonable thing to try, or am I
just spinning my wheels?

BTW, it's not the end of the world, once I get 3
computers networked, to run downstairs and disconnect,
then disconnect again (kppp won't automatically do it,
because the modem's is still on ... I hear it click
off when I disconnect ... and can't get back on until
I disconnect ... i connect again with no problem), but
it's better if it just stayed on ...

[newbie] 56k modem

2003-03-19 Thread Anonymous
I've reinstalled mandrake 9, and now the modem works;
however, the symptom (being able to surf for awhile,
then for some odd reason not) remains. This happened
with Redhat 8 as well ...

I'm testing an old machine with Mandrake 9 -- it has
an ISA internal 56k modem, and DOES NOT have that
symptom...I'm using the 2 machines simultaneously (2
different phone lines, same outlet) ...

I also bought and tested another modem, and the
symptom began immediately when I connected.

Mandrake 9 must not like PCI modems? Or what do you
think?

BTW, both modems are HARDWARE modems.

What are the troubleshooting steps I need to take (if
there are any, please be specific rather than general
about how to do these tests. I'm very much a newbie).

(I've not looked at the archives to see if this is a

I've used this US Robotics/3COM hardware modem
(internal) with RedHat 8.0, and I know that it works
... I installed Mandrake 9.0 after having problems
with internet connections (sometimes, I would be
connected for 10 minutes then not be able to surf any
longer .. on up to 3 hours ... very sporadic ... )

Now, when I do su - then kppp , it says that the
modem does not respond, or that I need to set up the
modem correctly ...

What troubleshooting steps should I be taking?

Actually, an easier way (if you have the bandwidth to download the whole thing anyway)
would be to go to the iso/ folder on one of the ftp sites and download the file
"mandrake60-1.iso" which is an image of the whole mandrake cd (version 6 anyway, are
earlier ones still available?) The ftp directory page even gives instructions on how
to burn the image if you've never created a cd from an image before. No special
settings needed.

The easiest and safest thing is to download the ISO image, and follow the
simple instructions to burn it. Find a mirror near you that carries the
image (ie. ftp://linux.origo.no).

Re: [newbie] How do I burn the CD?

1999-06-28 Thread Anonymous

You can download an burn a cdrom image (prolly the best idea if your new)
the image is in:
/packages/Mandrake/iso/ (of your chosen download site)
the image file is mandrake60-1.iso (or something like that.
the readme file tells how to bur it under easy cd creator.

this image is all you need.

BUT! when you install it you'll have to update some packages, including
the kernel, so your cd image won't realy be a perfect working copy on
mandrake.

...you could just download the trees with the updates as well, but there's
too much room for error if you ask me...and if your new to it all, it's
more confusing than worth while.

From the web page:
Linux-Mandrake Downloads: distribution, iso image, updates and
   applications

You must at least download the "Mandrake/" and "images/"
trees from the
   "6.0/" directory. It's about 500 Mb.
An iso9660 image of Linux-Mandrake is also available .
You can use such
a file for easy CD-burning (under Windows, you can use Easy
CD Pro or
Easy CD Creator, check our notice here - version en franais
ici). It's about
600 Mb (one file only). Important Notes: the iso file
(mandrake53-2.iso) is
available in the "iso/" directory. The file "iso-md5sum" is
only needed for
   binary integrity checking.

RickStar's keys are calculated using personal info that you supply them
when you register. If the info has been entered in your computer
installation exactly as the info you provided them then the key works. If

I can tell you 'why' it happens, but not 'how' to solve it. My guess is since
the CDROM image is saved on a FAT partiton, that partition needs to be mounted
before Linux will see it. To mount a FAT partition type this at a prompt:

mount -t vfat /dev/hdax /mnt/x

Change the 'hdax' to what partiton no. it is, and /mnt/x is a directory you need
to create. If you use Windows a lot, make /mnt/d for your D: partition and so
on.

This was a big mistake. glib/gtk+ 1.2.0 are seriously broken, and the RPMs

[newbie] MoDeM

1999-06-27 Thread Anonymous

that would work with linux? What brand of modem would work good with
linux?

[newbie] Mount in 6 the same ?

1999-06-27 Thread Anonymous

I have a second partition on my primary drive. If I remember correctly when
I had 5.3 I just created a directory in /mnt and added a line to the
/etc/fstab.

So when I installed 6.0 I created a directory called hda2 and added the line
to fstab
/dev/hda1 /mnt/hda2 ext2defaults1 1 (even tried 0 0 )

When I do this I get an error message on boot that asked my if I want to
control D for normal boot (which won't work) or enter root password for
maintenance. I do this and edit the fstab line I added and reboot. It works
OK.

I used fdisk -L to verify the partition is in fact hda2.

Has mandrake 6.0 changed something that causes the automount to work
different ?

Thanks,

Rich

Hi

I am trying to connect to my aol account using a 3 com modem.

I have configured minicom to use device ttys1(com2) which is
the port device to which my external modem is attached.

I am trying to dial in and have entered the number and id/password in
the configuration for the aol account in the dial up program.

It says something like initializing modem

then it says 'Setting speaker volume...'

and just hangs...

What is wrong? If I have to set up somthing else to do with my sound

[newbie] DSL and Mandrake

1999-06-26 Thread Anonymous

Hi gang,

have some new info and I will recap some of the old for any newcomers. I
still haven't got it to work yet, but learned a couple valuable things.

First the Linux box has two network cards (eth0 and eth1)

The eth0 card is configured as 192.168.1.1 with a netmask of 255.255.255.0
The eth1 card is configured as 192.168.1.2 with a netmask of 255.255.255.128

All other windows machines on the LAN are 192.168.1.X and 255.255.255.128

The router is set up as defualt. The only items I have entered into the
router are:
set ppp wan0-0 ipcp 0.0.0.0
set ppp wan0-0 dns 0.0.0.0
set ppp restart enabled
set dhcp server enabled
set nat enabled
and login and passwords.

This is what USWEST has in the book. This setup is currently working plugged
into my hub.

What I just realized doing a winipcfg in windows was the Cisco 675 router
has the following. I am going to add all info beacuse I am not sur if it is
relevent.

Host name Rich
DNS servers 207.108.32.1 and 204.147.80.5
Node type =broadcast
IP address 10.0.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 10.0.0.1
DHCP server 10.0.0.1

I think I read somewhere that NAT sets up these default address's.

I am thinking this info needs to be entered under routing in netcfg??

Under routing I have :

default gateway
default gateway device__

And then if I click add I get

Device_
Network___
Netmask___
Gateway___

Anyone care to fill in the blanks ?

I have tried to ping the router at 10.0.0.1 and 2 and cant get a response.

Thanks all :)

Rich

OK, it sounds like your router is configured to be on a different
network. Assuming that your eth0 card is the one that's connected to
the router, set its IP to 10.0.0.x, where 2=x=254. Do likewise with
all other machines on the network. Alternatively, you might try
enabling dhcp on the linux box (and the other machines).

 default gateway
 default gateway device__

10.0.0.1 for both, I believe.

And then if I click add I get

 Device_
 Network___
 Netmask___
 Gateway___

You wouldn't need to add another network interface, AFAIK.

I have tried to ping the router at 10.0.0.1 and 2 and cant get a
response.

The router is at .1; 10.0.0.2 seems to be your Win box. My guess is
that your Linux box doesn't know how to route to 10.0.0.1, which is why
it doesn't get a response.

I'm not sure, though, why you have two NICs in the Linux box. With
this setup (using a separate router), you shouldn't need a second one.

RE: [newbie] DSL and Mandrake

1999-06-26 Thread Anonymous

Hi Dan,

I will give that a try. I am not sure what you meant by "where 2=x=254". I
think maybe a typo in there.

The reason for two ethernet cards is because the Cisco 675 is an external
router and it hooks up to a NIC with a crossover cable. So the first one is
for the router and the second is for my small home LAN.

Thank you again. I am off to try that.

Hi All,
Sorry my mail is a little long. Please be advised of that.

by hackers throughout the world and it does not have a certified

of my computational work, and the performance of Linux, and many
technical details that Linux has over Windows. But because the
software that I run has a Windows counterpart which does the job for
him he was skeptical, although I could sense how impressed he was
with Linux, Kde, Gnome , AfterStep and other things.
He has asked me this simple question: Suppose that he gets some
work done at work under Excel, Word or Corel and he wants to
continue the same work at home where he has a Linux machine. What
chances has he got in porting is work from the Dos environment to
Linux.
My answer to that was that he could either install Staroffice or
WordPerfect in his home machine so that he could port the job. But
that was all said in theory, since I do not have either of the two
tools in my machine to prove a point, he did not seem very convinced.
Can anybody give me more reasons to convince him. Anyway I'll install
Soffice or WP to convince him.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi
Aaron,

It is
not set up as a bridge, I heard from someone else the US West used to do that.
Under windows the only settings are obtain IP address automatically and use DHCP
for wins resolution.

On the
bridge they have you set. (off the top of my head and probably not
exact)

set
ppp wan0-0 ipcp 0.0.0.0
set ppp wan0-0 dns 0.0.0.0
set ppp wan0-0 login login name
set ppp wan0-0 login password my password
set nat enabled
set server restart enabled
set dhcp server enabled

I
think that is it. I messed around with it most of last night and made no
progress. I am condsidering going back to a more mature distribution with good
documentation.

Any
thoughts? Thanks for your help.

well, when I was on US West, the cisco 675 was a
bridge, not a router, so it has no IP of it's own. you need to set the
computer to DHCP. I dunno how to do that in Linux except at install,
but I'm 99% sure if you are assigning a IP to a us west dsl bridge it's
wrong. How is your win box setup? Betcha 100 bucks obtain

I just need to make the Linux box talk to the

Can some one give me the information (step by

process or I have missed something obvious.

My current setup is:

Mandrake 6.0 with two ethernet
cards

eth1
IP address is 192.168.1.2
Subnet is
255.255.255.128

eth0

IP address is 192.168.1.1
Subnet is
255.255.255.0

I have a Cisco 675 external router. Basically
all I can tell you is it is running in PPP mode, has NAT and
DHCP server enabled and ipcp has been set to 0.0.0.0 and DNS has
been set to 0.0.0.0. It works when I plug it into a Windows
machine !!

I am using USWest DSL and ISP service. I DO
NOT have a static IP address.

Beyond the above address's which I have
entered using the netcfg what else do I need to set
up ? Is there anything that needs to be configured under the
routing tab.

Eventually (like tommorrow.. hehe) I want to
go back to IP masquerading as I have done in the past with a
dial up connection. .. I guess I need to get the Linux machine
to talk to the internet on its own first.

Thank you very much in advance for any help

I have installed linux several times. This procedure always works.
1. Edit /etc/smb.conf and change the following
MAKE SURE that the line "workgroup = MYGROUP' is CHANGED to be
"workgroup = (what ever you have in windows under workgroup in
settings-control panel-network-identification"
2. Change the line 'security = user' to security = share'
3. Uncomment (take out the semi-colon) the section that looks like
this:
;[public]
;path = /home/samba
;public = yes
;writable = yes
;printable = no
4. If you want your whole linux machine to show up in windows, change
the above "path = /home/samba" to 'path = /", otherwise, only the
/home/samba directory will be available to windows.
5. Shutdown and restart samba or reboot you linux machine and it will
be visible in windows network neighborhood.

 Hi All,
Sorry my mail is a little long. Please be advised of that.
I have got a friend whom is trying to move away from the Windows
environment, but is having a lot of concerns on whether he'll succeed
or not with Linux. He believes that because Linux is being developed
by hackers throughout the world and it does not have a certified
authentication, it will not last for longer. I've tried my best to
give him an overall picture of Linux plus the many things he can with
it, but don't think I was convincing enough. I even showed him some
of my computational work, and the performance of Linux, and many
technical details that Linux has over Windows.

[newbie] Kernel Optimizations

1999-06-25 Thread Anonymous

Linux Mandrake 6.0 is said to be optimized for Pentium-type processors.
This means that it was compiled using pgcc instead of gcc, correct? So if I
wanted to compile a custom kernel (i.e. include NTFS support) I'm guessing
that I should use pgcc instead of gcc, to keep the optimizations.
On a side note, could I do the opposite to install 6.0 on a 386/486? I
mean, install 6.0, including kernel sources, then boot off a floppy with a
non-optimized kernel, and recompile the kernel using gcc?

Also, was anything else done to Mandrake to optimize it for Pentium
processors?

As much as I would like to see Linux grow, I have to agree with Irv on this
one. This is like trying to get a friend to dump his girlfriend and go on a
blind date. The "best" operating system is the one that does what you need.
I like Linux. I loved UNIX way before X-windows. I dismissed MS Windows for
years until 3.11 came out. But the flat out truth is that MS Windows is
pretty damned good. And taking both license costs and administration costs
into consideration it's got by far the lowest "total cost of ownership" for
an individual or a small to mid-sized office. While Linux is "free" there
is big learning curve for most offices. That costs time, which is money.
For an individual it's the same argument. If the guy really wants to be
fertilizing his tomato plants instead of trying to get a letter out, then
he really wants to be fertilizing his tomato plants. And pushing him into
the position of having to fidget with something he isn't really interested
in is a disservice to him.

Of course, if he shows up at the door and says, "I've just formatted my C:

When something crashes or exits abnormally it may "core dump"...
I'm no expert but I think this is the programms way of trying to preserve

called 'core'which I guess is useless unless you're some kina expert.
so I'd remove it. TIP it may be a good idea to serch for files called
'core' now and again and remove them as they can take up a lot of space.

Just make sure you don't delete the ones that really should be there like
'/proc/core' for instance - there are probably others too - imagine that
could cause havoc if you got shot of them ;-)

you can also add options to some programms to prevent core dumps...I'm not
sure if this has to be done in the compile stage though.

I quote from the docs:
What is KDE?

KDE is a network transparent contemporary desktop environment for Unix workstations.
It was written by a world-wide network of software engineers committed to free
software development. KDE seeks to fill the need for an easy to use desktop for
Unix workstations, similar to the desktop environments found under the MacOS or
Window95/NT. We believe that the Unix operating system is the best operating
system available today.
(end quote)

Browse over to http://www.kde.org for more info.

KDM is the K Desktop Manager part of the environment - it is the Windows
Explorer done right. Basically, it allows access to local files, files on other
networked computers, and files on the internet directly from the desktop,
in "explorer" form, or "web browser" form, without having to load Netscape
or IE. In simplistic terms, everything is an internet page, so it's very easy
to get used to.

You'll have to boot Linux, log in as root (at first), and type startx [enter]
Start browsing and clicking stuff. One of the things you should do is click
on User Management and set up a regular user. Then logout, and login
again as that user. By doing this, you are protecting the operating system
files from accidental erasure, etc. If you don't do this, and screw up things,
well, you've got the CD. No harm in reloading a few times!

   basic questions I know!
 2) What other windows managers does linux-mandrake come with other

There are several, some look very much like Windows, others are simpler, more
like the early Mac's. Several others are also available for download. I
personally like WindowMaker - quite elegant. The idea here is, unlike Windows,
you have the freedom to choose any interface you like, and which suits your
needs.

or do I just go into the kde and do it from there?

KDM is, basically, a graphical login prompt. When logging into your machine
from KDM, you can also choose your windowing environment. I believe that
'KDM' stands for K Desktop Manager. You 'fire it up' when init changes to
runlevel 5. You can set this to happen whenever your computer boots, by
changing a line in /etc/inittab - if you look at the file, you should be
able to figure out where.

There is another graphical login, xdm, which is not specific to any window
manager (as is KDM). It, however, will not let you choose your environment.
I believe Gnome also has a login... probably 'gdm' or something similar.
That one should let you choose an environment.

 basic questions I know!

 2) What other windows managers does linux-mandrake come with other
than the kde?

Off the top of my head, I can think of WindowMaker, AfterStep,
Enlightenment, Gnome (which isn't actually a window manager, just a desktop
environment- it tends to like Enlightenment as a window manager), FVWM95 or
2 (not sure which), AnotherLevel, and probably one or two more that I can't
think of. You certainly have a lot to choose from. Most of these contain
some utility to switch from one environment to another- or you can use the
command-line utility 'desktopcfg' which will change your default. Or, as
mentioned above, you can choose an environment when you log in to KDM.

I know this is basic stuff but having used microsoft products I really
 need to start from scratch.

No problem. I think quite a few of us have come from Microsoft
products. I also think there will be more...

Re: [newbie] using xwindows instead of kde

1999-06-24 Thread Anonymous

I guess most of your questions will be answered if you look on the web page,
or more importantly (since you have the mandrake 6 cd) by installing mandrake
6. Upon installing it I learned that it comes with kde, gnome, afterstep,
ice, etc etc - all nice managers. If you did the default install you should
have a graphical logic screen if I'm not mistaken, and from there be able to
choose your window manager (assuming you chose to install them all - I was
given the choice of installing them all or just kde, it defaulted to just kde
for me - but I love to experiment so I put them all on). If you don't have
these options then you will have to change your configuration files (someone
else is better at describing this) and/or install more window managers from
your cd-rom.

Don
by the way folks, thanks for the help with the kernel upgrade - it's running
great now!

Get the program rawrite (usually on the CDROM) and get two images: 1) the boot.img and

just type "rawrite imagename.img a:" and it'll create that boot disk and rescue disk

[newbie] Something to look into?

1999-06-24 Thread Anonymous

This was taken from LWN:

There have been consistent reports of file corruption errors in 2.2.9

and beyond. This is a strange problem - it affects relatively
few people, and
has proved to be very hard to nail down. It was initially
thought to be
hardware-related, but enough evidence has come in to strongly
indicate
the existence of a kernel bug.

Alan Cox is hot on the trail of this problem - see his first
and second
summaries of what he has turned up so far. It may well be
that the problem
will have been nailed down by the time you read this; if so,
information can
be found in the LWN daily updates page.

For the links:
http://lwn.net/1999/0624/a/ac-corruption1.html
http://lwn.net/1999/0624/a/ac-corruption2.html
http://lwn.net/daily/
-

Now, I realize that this problem is supposedly encountered by a small number of
people but...even if the problem only affects 90% of the users, if you happen to
be that unlucky 10%, though, it would suck like rocks through a straw. (worse -
if you're one of the many frontline grunts trying to convince your boss that
"Linux is better!")

Coupled with the many "problems" (now, I don't mean to belittle others' problems
with Venus but...sometimes, the problem looks worse than it really is.) that
folks seem to be having...perhaps there will be a Mandrake 6.1 in the rather
near future? (I understand there's a lot of stuff in /updates as well).

But maybe we'll wait for XFree86 3.3.3.2? Or (gasp!) 4.0? How about KDE 2.0? ;-)

[newbie] Mandrake and DSL

Can
some one give me the information (step by step) to get my Linux machine hooked
up to my DSL line. I am lost and have tried everything. Either it is a very
complicated process or I have missed something obvious.

My
current setup is:

Mandrake 6.0 with two ethernet cards

eth1

IP
address is 192.168.1.2
Subnet is 255.255.255.128

eth0

IP
address is 192.168.1.1
Subnet is 255.255.255.0

I have
a Cisco 675 external router. Basically all I can tell you is it is running in
PPP mode, has NAT and DHCP server enabled and ipcp has been set to 0.0.0.0 and
DNS has been set to 0.0.0.0. It works when I plug it into a Windows machine
!!

I am
using USWest DSL and ISP service. I DO NOT have a static IP
address.

Beyond
the above address's which I have entered using the netcfg what else
do I need to set up ? Is there anything that needs to be configured under the
routing tab.

Eventually (like tommorrow.. hehe) I want to go back to IP masquerading
as I have done in the past with a dial up connection. .. I guess I need to get
the Linux machine to talk to the internet on its own first.

Thank
you very much in advance for any help you can provide.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake and DSL

Well, if the Cisco is anything like my Netgear router (ISDN) you'll need to
assign an IP address to it. The IP address for my Netgear ISDN Router INSIDE
is 192.168.0.1. I manage this box by telnetting to it at the aforementioned
address. My Ethernet is 192.168.0.x, where x is greater than 1, but less
than 255. It doesn't really matter, but probably you'll need to renumber
your eth0 to be 192.168.0.2 and your eth1 to 192.168.0.3 and make your Cisco
router 192.168.0.1. Check your docs though... it might be a completely
different beast from my ISDN router. I'm just going by my experience with
Netgear and Ascend Pipeline routers (Ascend makes routers for T-1+ down to
ISDN and they all work very similar to the Netgear ISDN Router.) Why it
works in Windows without an IP address, I don't know. I know that I manually
configured my Windows box here so that it's default gateway is the inside IP
address of my Netgear. The Netgear then automagically spits it out onto the
ISDN line and on upstream to my ISP. :-)

The log shows the following information...
"receive serial link is not 8-bit clean"
"problem: all had bit 7 to 1"

This sounds like a device error. Which device are you using for the modem?
I have always used a ttyS?? device.

I haven't seen that error message before so I'll just list what I have
found to be important.

In kppp check the following for your MSN account:

DNS

Do you have a "DNS address list"? I use the following 2 addresses:

198.6.1.218
198.6.100.218

Make sure to check "Disable existing DNS Servers"

IP

Make sure "Dynamic IP Address" is checked.
Do not check "Auto-configure hostname..."

Gateway

Check "Default Gateway" and "Assign the Default Route..."

If you are currently hooked up to a network a default route may have been
assigned. After you connect run "route" from a console. If default route
points
to another address other than your ISPs dynamically assigned IP address
then
this may be a problem.
