[newbie] Netscape 4x on mdk 10

2004-08-15 Thread Marco Verheul
Hi all,

I want to install Netscape 4.7 on my mdk 10.0 machine to be able to test
whether websites still look good in old browsers.

Will it mess up other browsers such as Mozilla?

Is there a rpm that I can use for installation on mdk10.0?

Cheers,
Marco

[newbie] MP3 to WAV in K3b?

2004-07-31 Thread Marco Verheul
Hi all,

I seem to remember that I read on this list that it is possible to
convert mp3 files to wav with K3b. In K3b I don't see anything in the
menu's that indicates that it does.

Can anyone tell me how to do this?

If it can't be done, what is a good alternative?

Just create an audio project then drag and drop your mps3s into the lower
 pane.
They will be automatically converted to wav files when you burn the CD.

Derek,

I did in the meantime and i figured it works that way. I was really

Do you think this can be caused by K3b? If so, I'm back to good old

Sorry Marco, but Linux and crashing are not words I associate with each
 other.

If a user programme fails it should not affect anything other than itself,
although its possible it might make your Window Manager hang. In which case
you can normally still use a text console, or if all else fails Alt+Sysreq+r
 etc (see
 http://doc.mandrakelinux.com/MandrakeLinux/92/en/Starter.html/troubleshooting-system-freeze.html
  )

Personally I find k3b rock solid.

Derek,

Thanks, it was my window manager that got stuck. Gave it a try again and
it worked like a charm! K3b moved way up in the burning business...
I guess by the time I figured out xcdroast I got stuck to it. Still like
it though, but K3b offers a better ease of use.

Java is probably not in your path so you'll have to give the full path
to its location; on my machine it's /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/bin/java.
You could probably set up a link in ~/bin or /usr/bin if you wanted.

Or simply add /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/bin (or whathever java version you

I did that, but probably I had to reboot my system after installing

Stephen,

I do have a card stuck in a slot. I disabled the onboard sound. As a
result I got a sound icon in the panel which wasn't there before, so I
guess there is some sort of recognition (but still no sound).

I tried to configure the sound system in:

System - configuration - KDE - sound - sound system

On the first tab I accepted the defaults. On the second I selected
autodetect and checked Full duplex. When I hit the apply button I get
the error:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I really could use any good ideas. Thanks!

Hmm, I have a SB 5.1 Digital installed in one of my boxes, and remember
problems under Mdk 9.x, frustrated the heck out of me for weeks. Finally
worked out that 9.x OSS drivers on their own were running the card in
analog mode, and I had my speakers hooked to the digital output. A quick
switch to analog speakers fixed that but stopped my surround sound working.
I then found the emu10k tools rpm which provides some tools to configure
the card to run in digital output mode and most things worked OK. The ALSA
drivers in 9.x I could never get to run properly. I now have 10.0 OE on
that box which is now my server, and the latest ALSA drivers under kernel
2.6 seem to be OK on it, but not having my 5.1 speakers on that box anymore
 I haven't tested it fully.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Bear in mind, though, that Windows does NOT like to be installed nor
booted from any other partition than the first partition on the primary
drive - good ol' Microsoft, ay?

What I've always done to make SURE that Windows and linux can live
happily together is to create my partitions first, install Windows
first, then in the remaining space install linux - that way, Microsoft
can have the damn first partition on the primary drive and thence be a
 happy slugpuppy without further issue.

[newbie] Error installing cssed

2004-04-24 Thread Marco Verheul
Hi all,

I'm trying to install cssed-0.2.0 on my mdk 9.1 machine. When I run
./configure I get the following error:

configure: error: libgtk2.0-dev not found please install libgtk2.0-dev

I do have libgtk+2.0_0-devel-2.2.1-2mdk installed, but I doesn't seem to
be the same. I can't seen to find libgtk2.0-dev either. Can anybody tell
me where I can find it? Thanks!

[newbie] QT and QCanvasView

2004-04-17 Thread Marco Terzuoli
Hi,
I am developing a QT project in which I would like to draw an image
somewhere on a form (in a frame for example or anyway in some space within
the form). I am currently able to create a form and draw into it, but when
it comes to drawing onto a frame I only get a small piece draw, whereas the
rest is hidden and I can only see it using scrollbars.
The code I use to create the QCanvasView is this:

  QImage image(width,height,32);

some code to initialize the image

  QPixmap pix(image);
  QCanvas *c = new QCanvas( width,height );
  QCanvasView *cv = new QCanvasView( c ,frame);
  c-setBackgroundPixmap(pix);
  c-update();
  cv-show();

In this code frame is of class QFrame. If I set frame=0 new windows are open
and everything works fine within them, but if I use a real frame the error
I have told occurs.
What can I do?
Thanks

No, I cannot use it in that case and I cannot see it with lsusb. But if I plug

/etc/fstab a bit, and put a permanent icon on my desktop. It works great

Don't know how that would work under 10.0 though. (I'm gonna have to

so I don't know if they will work correctly. Anyway as far as I know this

The best place to get rar is from Vincent Danen's excellent site:

Where you can get the rar rpm for all relatively recent versions of
Mandrake, plus qmail rpms, plus a few other rpms that are hard to find
 elsewhere.

Rar is one of the best compressor/archiver programs that there is.

Does anybody know how to find out if there's more to come and most
importantly, how to cancel it?

I'm running mdk 9.1 by the way.

Hi, I have installed a simple samba that uses a simple samba authentication

in my configuration files but suddenly I can't access my samba shares from
my Windows Xp Professional machine.
If I restart manually the smb service from a console, I receive
the message that smb and nmb daemons were restarted ok but if I restart the
services from Webmin tools I receive the message :
Access control violation /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start failed
The finally result is that my samba server has stopped to work and I don't
understand why.
Thank you very much for any useful suggestions.

2004-01-11 Thread Marco Verheul
Hi all,

Well, several questions actually...

I received a cd I ordered containing 6800 true type fonts. Installing
them with Mandrake Control Centre goes smoothly. But:

1. Are there any drawbacks when I install the whole lot?

2. I noticed not all installed fonts are available in The Gimp (where I
need them most). Is thare an easy way to make all installed fonts
available to Gimp?

3. When installing 6800 is too much, is there a recommended way to
manage the fonts. Is there a tool where fonts can be viewed from the
*.ttf file?

Thanks and regards,
Marco

At this point, there's just one Windows program I'd like to see if I

to work in my Mandrake installation, it will, at the very least, give
me a little extra time to get used to some of the Linux text editors

So...are there any good Wine for *Complete Dummies* tutorials out

Melissa,

I installed Wine last week and used the most recent package that I
downloaded from sourceforge:

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6241

Click link 20031118 to read how to install. The configuration program
winesetuptk is included in the mdk package, so if you follow the
instruction on the sourceforge you will be able to install and do a
basic configuration.

You might also want to check out Crossover Office at url

I tried the trail version and I think it's excellent. Very easy to use.

Good luck, Marco

Re: [newbie] How to get Wine working? [SOLVED]

2003-12-05 Thread Marco Verheul
 Hi Marco,

The Wine on the 9.1 CDs is very old (new releases come out monthly).
Wines compiled for Mandrake can be found at

 http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6241

I'm not sure about the status of the November wine. There have been
a number of complaints on the wine users mailing list about the
Mandrake binary. However, I installed the October Mandrake binary
successfully, so I know that one will install properly on a 9.1 system.

I agree with cdrack's advice about using Winesetuptk to configure
it. There is a new Winesetuptk at the site I listed above. One of
its benefits is that it takes advantage of all the new stuff in the
latest Wine releases. I installed it and thought it did a great job
of installing all my media for Wine's use.

Since Wine is alpha software, there is no guarantee that it will run
your application. Winehq maintains a database of applications that have
been tried with Wine (both successfully and unsuccessfully). You might
look there to see if anyone has tried to use TopStyle with Wine.

 http://appdb.winehq.com

Also, it is important to remove your current installation of Wine
before installing another one. You can easily do this through the
 Mandrake Control Center.

 Good luck,
 deedee

Thanks,

I found the November Wine at source forge and it installed without a
problem. It even includes winesetuptk, so configuring went pretty smooth.
I even installed TopStyle and got it running quite easily.

I'm not at my own PC at the moment, but I will send another message later
explaining what I did to get it working, so others can benefit from it.

[newbie] Fonts

2003-11-26 Thread Marco Verheul
Hi again,

Sorry, but I seem to have deleted the answer given to my question about
having newly installed fonts available at startup.

My question was:
I installed new fonts recently in /usr/X11R6/bin/X11/fonts. What
should I do to make the fonts available when I start my PC? Do I
need to include the xset command in some configuration file?

I tried to add the font paths to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, so the file now
looks like this:

begin
# File generated by XFdrake.

# **
# Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of
# this file.
# **

Section Files
# Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated
together)
# By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server
independent of
# the X server to render fonts.
FontPath unix/:-1
FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/freefont
FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/sharefont
FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/URW
EndSection

etc
end

It doesn't work (I tested it by trying the text tool in Gimp). Did I
make the entry wrong?
I read something about adding to file /etc/rc.d/rc.local but I couldn't
figure out what should be added there and why. Could this be the
solution?

Any suggestions are most welcome.

yep, think the quality problem is most likely rooted in the size he is
scanning the image to, then reducing it and then saving it in some
other format, every step degrading some,,, but 600dpi 'ought to be' a
big enough file to start with.

Thanks for your input. I have found a way to print scanned images at the
correct size. I scan the image at 600 dpi and open it in GIMP. It the
print dialog there is an option to scale the image. I use that to scale
it to the same dimensions as indicated in Xsane.

I used the following settings:

- scale by : percent
- units : cm

Just set the scale to the required width and height and print. I have my
printer configured in different ways. I use my 'photoprint' option where
I also print with a resolution of 600 dpi.

You don't give us much to go on really. What make of scanner sre you
using, are you in Mandrake with kde desktop, and do you have sane
installed. Indeed, why are you not scanning with sane as your image file
creation tool ? Well that is what I would use. Then when I have that
working and producing good quality image files, which in linux are .pnm
files I would then use an image display and manipulation programme like
gimp to finalise them and print off from there.

To check up on what sane packages you have installed, do,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# rpm -qa | grep sane
 xsane-0.90-2mdk
 sane-backends-1.0.11-5mdk
 libsane1-1.0.11-5mdk
 sane-frontends-1.0.10-1mdk

The guts of sane is, sane-backends-1.0.11-5mdk , and libsane1-1.0.11-5mdk.

xsane-0.90-2mdk and sane-frontends-1.0.10-1mdk are the graphical front
ends that most of us use to do the practical work.

When your've got sane up and working well we can move on from there.

Just to give you a flavour of what sane looks like I attatch an image
file of the desktop with sane up and running.

 John

 John

John,

I got all the right sane packages installed. I got both Gnome and KDE
installed and i'm runing Gnome right know. My problem is this: when i
used to scan an image on a Windows machine I had real crappy scanning
software (if you installed in english, you got a spanish version...) but
when i scanned an image and printed it, it came out with exactly the
same dimensions. Now when I scan at a resolution of 600 i get a huge
image, so it seems Kooka as well as Xsane handle this matter
differently.

I use Kover to scale the images in such a way it fits a jewel case. Am i
missing a point here?

If you installed the server packages, you already have everything you
need. You may need to start yourSQL, but there's no great need to
configure perl, php, or yourSQL. Apache may need some configurin',
 though.

I don't know how much you know about apache etc. but the webroot on

 /etc/httpd/conf/.

Thanks Todd,

I guess i will survive. I will just do all the installations and go from

previous mails on the topic right it seems Apache 2 works out of the

[newbie] Kooka

2003-08-02 Thread Marco Verheul
Hi all,

I recently did a complete uninstall of SANE and all that comes along
with it due to the dependencies (which is quite a lot) in order to get
my new scanner connected.

After installing SANE again I got the scanner running fortunately, but
it seems that Kooka is no longer with me. It's not in the menu anymore,
i can't start it from the command line and when i search on the name
kooka in Mandrake Control Center it doesn't show up in either install
new software or remove software.

Can i install package kooka-3.0.5-1.i386.rpm from RpmFind.net or is
there a mdk specific package that i missed?

Btw, Xsane runs, but I'm not too fond about it, so that's why i want to
give Kooka a try.

Quite literally, you should be able to use it out of the box with
little or no configuration - of course, with the exception of running it
the first time and having it set itself up per user.

I installed WINE from the 9.1 cd's, but I suppose i have to set up some
sort of 'fake' directory structure where I can install programs. I'm
happy as a clam with all the Linux tools, but I would like to toy around
with TopStyle and Dreamweaver. Also I wouldn't mind if i could get Kazaa
to run...

Can you recommend a tutorial to do a basic set up?

I would get the latest version of Kazaa lite if you do go down that line as
the New Version 2.4 K++ now includes IP blocking. The blocked IPs can be
manually entered or obtained, which includes all known addresses used by
the RIAA for scanning for copyright offenders.

OK, I might give Kazaa a rest considering all the fuzz that's going on.

Re: [newbie] Reboot Window (KDE)

2003-07-16 Thread Marco Caliari
Selecting logout from KDE (mandrake 9.1) you get an opportunity to
 reboot.
If you choose to do so, sometimes you get a window with a dragon and three
choices, sometimes you get the same OS list displayed by lilo, and
 sometimes
you just get a 3 inch square blank window. What is really supposed to
 happen?
 ...
 mike

Do you use autologin, don't you? If you logout after an autologin, you get
the 3 inch square blank window. But if you logout and re-login and
re-logout, you get the dragon. The OS list appears (for me) only from KDM.

Moreover, from the shortcuts of KDE, if I select Power off (without
asking) (or something similar), I get a logout if autologinned and I get
a real power off if loginned.

 O.K.
Make sure that your snape50.bin is executable

Now from the command line type sane-find-scanner

within the output from this you should see these lines (I've taken mine and

 found USB scanner (vendor=0x06bd, product=0x208f) at libusb:002:002

Now assuming you see this again from the command line type scanimage -L
 and you should get this:-
device `snapscan:/dev/usb/scanner0' is a AGFA SNAPSCAN flatbed scanner

If you don't get all or any of these results post your output here.

Again the output is as you described above. No surprises there. It seems
that whatever I do, my scanner is recognized, but that somehow
Scannerdrake fails to add it to the list of configured scanners. Every
time I try again, it doesn't find any configured scanners, only new
ones.

Also I noticed that when I boot my machine, configuring the scanner and
starting Xsane performs at a normal speed. When I try again, it takes
much more time. It seems to me the hardware detection takes much longer.
Is this an indication of something familiar?

I got past the startup screen once when I configured Red Carpet for a
proxy, but then it didn't work. When i use the option 'No proxy' it
starts, but i don't get past the startup screen.

Could this be related to my internet connection? I connect to ADSL using
an E-tech router.

Regards,
Marco

compatibilita').
