[newbie] Netscape 4x on mdk 10
Hi all, I want to install Netscape 4.7 on my mdk 10.0 machine to be able to test whether websites still look good in old browsers. Will it mess up other browsers such as Mozilla? Is there a rpm that I can use for installation on mdk10.0? Marco Sorry Marco, but Linux and crashing are not words I associate with each other. If a user programme fails it should not affect anything other than itself, although its possible it might make your Window Manager hang. In which case you can normally still use a text console, or if all else fails Alt+Sysreq+r etc (see http://doc.mandrakelinux.com/MandrakeLinux/92/en/Starter.html/troubleshooting-system-freeze.html ) Personally I find k3b rock solid. derek Derek, Thanks, it was my window manager that got stuck. Gave it a try again and it worked like a charm! K3b moved way up in the burning business... I guess by the time I figured out xcdroast I got stuck to it. Still like it though, but K3b offers a better ease of use. Marco Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Hi all, I installed Linux on my company laptop and I noticed that with KDE there are vertical blue lines visible in the panel and on some applications (especially KDE apps like Konqueror). Re: [newbie] rar compression software
On www.rpmfind.net you can find more up-to-date packages of rar (version 3.3). The problem is that they are not specifically designed for Mandrake, so I don't know if they will work correctly. I've tried that but it doesn't work either... Point is I've got both SB and a sound card integrated in my motherboard, which uses the via82xx module. Re: [newbie] How to get Wine working? [SOLVED]
Hi Marco, The Wine on the 9.1 CDs is very old (new releases come out monthly). Wines compiled for Mandrake can be found at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6241 I'm not sure about the status of the November wine. There have been a number of complaints on the wine users mailing list about the Mandrake binary. However, I installed the October Mandrake binary successfully, so I know that one will install properly on a 9.1 system. I agree with cdrack's advice about using Winesetuptk to configure it. There is a new Winesetuptk at the site I listed above. One of its benefits is that it takes advantage of all the new stuff in the latest Wine releases. I installed it and thought it did a great job of installing all my media for Wine's use. Since Wine is alpha software, there is no guarantee that it will run your application. Winehq maintains a database of applications that have been tried with Wine (both successfully and unsuccessfully). You might look there to see if anyone has tried to use TopStyle with Wine. http://appdb.winehq.com Also, it is important to remove your current installation of Wine before installing another one. You can easily do this through the Mandrake Control Center. Good luck, deedee Thanks, I found the November Wine at source forge and it installed without a problem. It even includes winesetuptk, so configuring went pretty smooth. I even installed TopStyle and got it running quite easily. I'm not at my own PC at the moment, but I will send another message later explaining what I did to get it working, so others can benefit from it. Hi again, Sorry, but I seem to have deleted the answer given to my question about having newly installed fonts available at startup. My question was: I installed new fonts recently in /usr/X11R6/bin/X11/fonts. What should I do to make the fonts available when I start my PC? Do I need to include the xset command in some configuration file? I tried to add the font paths to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, so the file now looks like this: begin # File generated by XFdrake. # ** # Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of # this file. # ** Section Files # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts. Hi everybody, could anybody help me please? I've downloaded the speedtouch package and unpacked the tar. But I can't seem to find the file called mgmt.o , is it downloadable somewhere? My second question is: As soon as I try to copy something to the root folder I get the message that I don't have the privileges to write in that folder. With the installation I didn't enter a password for the root but now I can't figure out how to be able to write into the root folders (which is nescessary to install the new ADSL speedtouch drivers)... do I have to log in as an admin? Thanks for your input. I have found a way to print scanned images at the correct size. I scan the image at 600 dpi and open it in GIMP. It the print dialog there is an option to scale the image. I use that to scale it to the same dimensions as indicated in Xsane. I used the following settings: - scale by : percent - units : cm Just set the scale to the required width and height and print. I have my printer configured in different ways. I use my 'photoprint' option where I also print with a resolution of 600 dpi. Marco -- Tell me about these oppressed masses. What make of scanner sre you using, are you in Mandrake with kde desktop, and do you have sane installed. Indeed, why are you not scanning with sane as your image file creation tool ? Well that is what I would use. Then when I have that working and producing good quality image files, which in linux are .pnm files I would then use an image display and manipulation programme like gimp to finalise them and print off from there. To check up on what sane packages you have installed, do, [EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# rpm -qa | grep sane xsane-0.90-2mdk sane-backends-1.0.11-5mdk libsane1-1.0.11-5mdk sane-frontends-1.0.10-1mdk The guts of sane is, sane-backends-1.0.11-5mdk , and libsane1-1.0.11-5mdk. xsane-0.90-2mdk and sane-frontends-1.0.10-1mdk are the graphical front ends that most of us use to do the practical work. When your've got sane up and working well we can move on from there. Just to give you a flavour of what sane looks like I attatch an image file of the desktop with sane up and running. John John John, I got all the right sane packages installed. I got both Gnome and KDE installed and i'm runing Gnome right know. My problem is this: when i used to scan an image on a Windows machine I had real crappy scanning software (if you installed in english, you got a spanish version...) but when i scanned an image and printed it, it came out with exactly the same dimensions. Now when I scan at a resolution of 600 i get a huge image, so it seems Kooka as well as Xsane handle this matter differently. I use Kover to scale the images in such a way it fits a jewel case. Make sure that your snape50.bin is executable Now from the command line type sane-find-scanner within the output from this you should see these lines (I've taken mine and put the id numbers for the e50 usb in) found USB scanner (vendor=0x06bd, product=0x208f) at /dev/usb/scanner0 found USB scanner (vendor=0x06bd, product=0x208f) at libusb:002:002 Now assuming you see this again from the command line type scanimage -L and you should get this:- device `snapscan:/dev/usb/scanner0' is a AGFA SNAPSCAN flatbed scanner If you don't get all or any of these results post your output here. Again the output is as you described above. No surprises there. It seems that whatever I do, my scanner is recognized, but that somehow Scannerdrake fails to add it to the list of configured scanners. Every time I try again, it doesn't find any configured scanners, only new ones. Also I noticed that when I boot my machine, configuring the scanner and starting Xsane performs at a normal speed. When I try again, it takes much more time. It seems to me the hardware detection takes much longer. Is this an indication of something familiar? [newbie-it] installazione modem adsl
Spero possiate aiutarmi. Vi ringrazio. Marco

[newbie] Red Carpet won't start
Hi, I just installed Ximian Red Carpet 1.4 on Mandrake 9.0 and when I start it up it stalls. I just have a ADSL connection and I'm not quite sure if this is part of the problem. I got past the startup screen once when I configured Red Carpet for a proxy, but then it didn't work. When i use the option 'No proxy' it starts, but i don't get past the startup screen. Could this be related to my internet connection? I connect to ADSL using an E-tech router. Regards, Marco Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

RE: [newbie-it] help: invio email....
RE: [newbie-it] Seti@Home: prestazioni e programmi correlati
