[newbie] SBLive! under 6.1 - success
Or should that be SUCCESS!! Just to confirm - recompiling your kernel without version information on modules DOES allow you to force the insertion of the current module available from Creative. On successful reboot you get all the glorious sounds you would expect from your most wonderful Sound Blaster Live!!! Now, the next question is how to write this up in a newbie friendly way ;o) If i think of something easy i'll post again - of course the easiest would be for the next kernel from Mandrake to be compiled this way in the first place!. Don't know if anyone from Mandrake is listening, but how about it guys? - would save a lot of people a lot of hassle, not to mention myself the bandwidth of putting of a new kernel RPM up on my website. I just had a browse around the Mandrake site and spotted the instructions for getting the Cassini mirror (that's under way now, but that's not why i post). In those instructions, it tells you to get the mirror and then run 'genhdlist /6.1bdir' Using this technique, could i then copy my 6.0 ISO to the hard disk. Overwrite the relevent files wth all the updates, and then update the hdlist file and create a new updated ISO image ?? Yes. The program genhdlis is in the /misc directory on the CD. Here is what I have learned: For example, I created a directory named /usr/local/newcd. I then copied all the files from the actual cd to /usr/local/newcd so that I have a /usr/local/newcd/Mandrake directory and a /usr/local/newcd/Mandrake/RPMS directory and so on. Then cd /usr/local/newcd/MISC and ./genhdlis /usr/local/newcd. First, make certain you delete the older versions of the rpm's after you have updated the rpm's. If you have any special rpm's, you could put them in the /APPS directory. You can also delete any unneeded rpm's (like the manpages for languages for which you have no need). You should also check dependencies for any replacement rpm's. I also updated the dos utilities (rawrite2, the current RawWrite for Windows, some other stuff) and included additional docs that I found useful. Also, I got the most current Lnx4Win files and even took the gui install stuff from cooker. If you want to modify the packages that are installed by default, the list is in /Mandrake/BASE/COMPS. For a simple, non-networked desktop computer, you could eliminate a lot of stuff. You could also make any special rpm's a part of the base install or any new menu choice you make. To test your "new" CD, try a hard drive install. If it works, burn yourself a new customized CD. FWIW, don't try copying and replacing files in Win9x - the CD filenames in Win9x are shown in 8.3 format and the capitalization of directory names can change causing scripts to fail to execute. Have fun. Hoyt
[newbie] Neomagic 256ZX anyone ?
Hi, Just setting up Mandrake on my laptop (correction _trying_ to set it up), and can't get X running at a decent res. The laptop is a Dell Lattitude CPt333GT and has a Neomagic MagicMedia 256ZX chipset on board with 4MB of video ram. Has anyone else tried (successfully!) to get this machine going ? Checked out Xfree86.org, but they simply list 'Neomagic' without anymore details - i'll pull down 3.3.5 of xfree later today. Thanks, Martin.
Re: [newbie] Neomagic 256ZX anyone ?
Just to follow up my own post (humour me !), installed the Xfree 3.3.5 packages from sunsite's 6.1 mirror (incidentally, the Mandrake site specifically states 6.1 is not out yet, yet sunsite don't have anything but 6.1 and 6.1b !?!) and then managed to force the Neomagic 128 option of the SVGA server to work by telling X that my card was a 128 with a 2200 chipset rather than a 256ZX. After telling it to use the external display we have a rather lovely 1024x768 display at 16bpp. Unless anyone has any better suggestion (ie a server specifically for the 256ZX) then don't worry about my original post. I just got off the phone with Amazon.com and Red Hat.com Legal departments and guess what the hot-breaking-heart-breaking news is? You can no longer refer to Red Hat Linux GPL distribution using the words Red Hat. Now it has to be called "I wanna be Microsoft" or "anonymous linux 6.0" or something similar, since the Red Hat name can no longer appear on ANY GPL PRODUCTS or ads. That's right, the GPL distribution of Red Hat Linux can no longer be called Red Hat Linux, it now MUST have a new name. No more Red Hat GPL CD's, advertisements, support groups, netnews, nothing... I know this sounds incredibly unbelievable, but the Red Hat GPL distribution can no longer be advertised or labelled Red Hat, only the official boxed set. As a linux seller on Amazon.com, I (along with 100 other people) sell a GPL version of the distribution formerly known as Red Hat Linux GPL. We now will be required to say we are selling 'blah' Linux 6.0 and will have to remove any labelling on products referring to the GPL Linux Distribution. How will people know they are getting Red Hat Linux GPL if it can't carry the name? You guess, because I haven't a clue... Of course the legal counsel rep, and only person in the entire Red Hat organization who can respond, David Shumannfang, is currently on vacation and won't be available for a week (9-7-99). Basically we are all screwed and no one at Red Hat knows anything until his return, just lovely. This email is a plea for you to email [EMAIL PROTECTED] and voice your displeasure over Red Hat's new copyright policy requiring their GPL distribution to be called something other than Red Hat Linux GPL. [SNIP] Maybe your card needs to have large disk support enabled similar to the PC bios. I'm pretty damn sure i've set up Mandrake boxes with huge SCSI disks before now (well +10Gb anyhow). Just a thought !! And I appreciate it. It was sold to me as a 9.1 GB scsi, so that may be the capacity of it. However, the PDF file for that drive (based on the model number sticker, NOT by what it is reported as in Linux) says it's a 10.5 Gig drive. *shrug* I can't find anything on the model number it reports back in the SCSI BIOS. John This wouldn't possibly explain why Linux reports the lower capacity of the drive on boot up, but it's not just a difference between formatted capacity and unformatted capacity is it ?? MANY manufacturures (?) exagerrate the capacities of their drives by quoting the bare unformatted figure - totally unrealistic, as whatever file system you format a disk with it ALWAYS reduces in size - the larger the disk, the more scary the amount of size you lose. Can't think off the top of my head whether a 1.5GB reduction is reasonable or not - it does sound a little excessive! Martin.

Now, when I try to launch an Xwin session, I get a "Connection Closed" error. The troubleshooting section of the manual would probably be pretty useful to someone who knew what they were doing: it says that the problem is one of three things: -You are trying to connect using rexec and rexecd or in.rexec will not allow the connection to continue. -Your host is running SunOs...(I think I can ignore this one) -Your host is running a tcp wrapper that closes the connection for security reasons. I also recall that the Linux box needed to be able to resolve your IP address. I also think there were a couple of places where this resolution needed to be placed. Sorry if it's all a bit vague - it's been a while. Certainly i got fantastic results when i just used XDMCP broadcast mode in full screen - any chance of trying that instead of rlogin/rexec (obviously i appreciate that might not fit in with what you are trying to do !) Am looking for a url to download Creative Labs linux drivers and perhaps some "dummies" instruction as to what to do with it once I've got it. Joe The URL to the linux drivers homepage is: http://developer.soundblaster.com/linux/ IF the card is deemed to be an SBLive or SBLive Value, then i can help out, and will send further details on request. If it is under the category 'Sound Blaster PCI' then it would be unfair for me to attempt to help - i have absolutely no experience of these cards whatsoever. I did a little hunting around, but the only PCI card Creative specifically mention in the products section of their website would appear to be the SB PCI 16, which certainly doesn't sound like the SBLive. Let me know. Martin.

Re: [newbie] Kernel 2.2.5 w/ Sound Blaster Live problem..
SMP is indeed for dual processor support, but from what i recall, the SBLive module specifcally requires that you DON'T have smp support in your kernel. Re: [newbie] Voodoo3
Bit busy at the moment - but do you have the linux mod's (drivers in Windows terms) for the V3. The location to get them from is mentioned on 3DFXs web site under Linux Drivers. You should have 3 RPMs. Put them in their own directory and then do (as root) an 'rpm -Uvh *rpm' After that run (again as root) 'XF86Setup' - you might as well say no to using your existing config as defaults as that's wrong anyway. Although the standard SVGA server 'supports' the V3, you need the custom server mentioned above to get it working properly (ie at a decent resolution/color depth). Re: [newbie] Sound Blaster Live!
This has been covered a few times lately, and yep, it's no problem. You don't specifiy which kernel you have, so i can't tell you which of the three modules from Creative's tar file to use. If you have the standard 2.2.9-19mdk that comes with 6.0, use the 2.2.5 module. If you have a 2.0.xx kernel, use the 2.0.36 module, any kernel 2.2.10 or higher, try the 2.2.10 module. Once you've copied the module into your '/lib/modules/2.2.x.-xxmdk/misc' directory as 'emu10k1.o', check out www.whitem.demon.co.uk/my_conf_modules.htm . The last four lines should be what you will need to insert into your '/etc/conf.modules' to pull it all together at boot time. I'm a little confused as to why it doesn't work (it does for me!), my 'conf.modules' can be found at http://www.whitem.demon.co.uk/my_conf_modules.htm if you want to check it out and make sure i gave you the correct syntax, etc. An alternative, but not as tidy method would be to insert the line that you are typing manually each boot into the end of '/etc/rc.d/rc.local'. I would agree with this one - we get this a lot at our offices. Are we to assume that all of the machines in question are on the same network - we have token ring and ethernet and getting things to appear in the network neighbourhood across the two networks is a bit of a work of art !! Doing a 'Find Computer' in windows will always find a machine if both the one you want to find and the one finding it are running WINS (in our case anyway) - this is all a bit above my head - i really should find out about all this and get to the bottom of it, but all i'm saying is there are plenty of other things that could prevent the PC from appearing in the network neighbourhood even if Samba is totally present and correct. Tom's reply to this says a lot more than i would have even thought of - good one !! All i'll add is that if you're specifically wanting to upgrade your SB16 - and i guess by now you may be - then (assuming finances are not a problem) i really can't think of a reason to suggest that you don't buy an SBLive. They are pretty damn good. Obviously if your current card was an awe64 or higher, the advice would probably be way different. Also, if there is anything unsupported that you want with the SBLive (not that i can think of anything), Creative don't seem to be too slow with their updates - there have been 3 versions in the 6-8 weeks since i bought mine, so i guess it wouldn't be a problem for long anyway. Hi, Checked out the new driver - not much luck if i used the one for kernel 2.2.10 - not all that surprising really as 2.2.9-19 is LOWER than that one !! (The CD player stuff works fine, but as soon as i play an MP3 which will use the wave table support (??) it breaks and needs a reboot - an unclean one at that). If, however you use the one called 'emu10k1.o-2.2.5-15' everything seems to work fine. Is it just my over keen imagination or does the SBLive start to sound better out of 4 speakers now than with the previous driver - starting to sound as good as it does under windows now - anyone else comment on this ?? Okay - do the following (exactly everything Creative recommend you _DONT_ do, so i take no responsibilty for this ;-) it works fine for me tho!) DO IT ALL AS ROOT (su -) Untar/zip the file from creative. 'cp emu10k1.o-2.2.5-15 /lib/modules/2.2.9-19mdk/misc/emu10k1.o' Remove any existing sound lines from conf.modules Add the following... 'alias sound emu10k1' 'options emu10k1 -f' 'pre-install emu10k1 insmod soundcore' 'post-remove emu10k1 rmmod soundcore' Save the file reboot. Instead of rebooting you could come out of X and then do... 'rmmod soundcore' 'rmmod sblive' (or whatever your old module was called) 'insmod -f emu10k1' For reference my conf.modules can be found at www.whitem.demon.co.uk/my_conf_modules.htm Check out the whole site if you like www.whitem.demon.co.uk you might find something else of interest there !! Re: [newbie] Voodoo 3000
You should have three RPMS in total. One is the X server, one is some RUSH libraries (?!), the last is an updated setup program that know of the V3000. Install all the RPMS (in no particular order) using 'rpm -Uvh nnn.rpm' (replace the n's with the rpm names - or if they are the only rpms in the dir do 'rpm -Uvh *rpm'). Then run the setup program - i think it was 'XF86Setup' (case sensitive). You may as well say no to using your existing file as defaults, it won't be any good anyway. The rest is self explanatory, but i can carry on if you need... [newbie] SCSI Emulation (again)
Hi everyone, Got ide-scsi emulation up and running nicely on my machine using a fresh install of Mandrake 6 (the 2.2.9-19 kernel version), but i want to know if there is a way to prevent the kernel from reporting my CD drives on every LUN on the scsi bus. I know how to do this with a kernel recompile, but want to know if there is a parameter i can supply somewhere to a module to save me recompiling. At the end of the day, it doesn't affect anything, it would just be nice to tidy things up. Martin.

Since then, I've run Win98 a few times, (It's kinda flakey, but I haven't played with Dosemu or WINE yet). This morning, I started up Linux, and once again it doesn't recognzie the keyboard. I can still boot in single-user mode, where I can see that in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S98pcmcia is still there, and S45pcmcia hasn't reappeared. Also, I've also noticed that on the laptop, a P2/233, the Bogomips shown on boot is 115.51 when running off the battery, down from it's 232.61 when plugged in. Is that an indication of something broken in part of the setup, or is it really clocking itself down to 1/2 speed while it runs on the battery? The strange bogomips display could well be down to the fact that some laptops (my Dell Latitude in particular) have a setting in the bios which tell the CPU to slow down, when it's not loaded in order to save the battery. As Linux doesn't use up so much cpu power as windows ;-) - especially on bootup - the cpu's probably really is going that slow at that time. Martin.

A work colleague of mine has just installed Mandrake 6 on his new Toshiba Satellite 4080 CDT. After rebooting into run level 3, the keyboard is locked and you can do nothing but hit the power button - networking wasn't setup during install as it uses a PCMCIA card that wasn't listed - so i thought we'd do it later. This means i can't telnet on and change runlevels. I'm at a bit of a loss. If i boot to runlevel 1 using 'linux single' everything is fine (after fixeing the filesystem problems caused by having to hit the power button). But i don't know how to strip out all unnesscary daemons from RL3 - if i run setup from RL1, i only get to set the daemons that i want loaded for RL1. Where do i start to get this up and running for him ?? - any ideas ? Thanks, Martin.

Re: [newbie] Satellite 4080CDT
The following URL gave me the info to fix the problem... http://www.submm.caltech.edu/~shimpei/laptop/#keyboard Basically what you need to do is boot into the system using 'linux single' at the lilo prompt - don't know how to do this if you're not using lilo, but if you're on the Mandrake list you probably are !! Fix any filesystem problems that have probably caused by having to switch off last time you booted (fsck /dev/hda5 for instance - and answer Y to fixing everything). If you had to fix the disk, reboot, again making sure you go 'linux single' (V IMPORTANT or you could be there all day fixing fs problems). Now, go to the directory /etc/rc.d/rcn.d (where n = the runlevel you wish to use) and do 'mv S45pcmcia S98pcmcia'. This delays the loading of the pcmcia till later in the boot and cures the keyboard problem. Note that you will need to do this every time you make a change to the system daemons with ntsysv or setup - anyone know of a more permanent way ?? Problem solved !! Re: [newbie] Yet another Sound Blaster problem
To all who have offered suggestions on this one, thanks, but i'm still stuck. If i do a 'play my.wav' at the prompt the sample (or a very small snippet of it) just loops until i reboot the pc. Doing an 'insmod -f sblive dmabuf=1' produces an error saying that the symbol wasn't recognised (in fact doing a 'modinfo -p sblive' suggests that it takes no parameters at all!). Downgrading the six audio / esound / sox packages didn't make the slightest difference, but haven't tried downgrading the kernel yet. Where do i go from here - please don't say get another sound card, that's not an option, i actually wanted this one that's why i bought it. Also don't say 'mail creative about releasing the source' - that don't fix my problem neither (well short term anyway). ??? Martin. PS: As 'play' doesn't work, i guess it has nothing to do with esound or X windows.

My sound no longer works when i try to start X - the speakers just violently click away to themselves (i don't know if audio works in a terminal as i never use one - what app could i try to find out?). I'm about to 'downgrade' first the sound related RPMs and then the kernel RPMs. That is if i can find them on the Mandrake site - i keep leaving the CD at work ! If that doesn't work does anyone know what else could be broken (quite honestly if that doesn't work then it has me beat as it was upgrading them that broke my setup in the first place!!). Has anyone else had any luck with all the upgrades and the SBLive module (with the '-f' to force it). Thanks for any help, this is starting to dive me nuts (as well as this laptop keyboard!). Martin.

Glad to see someone's managed to work out that you can force the SBLive module to load under all the kernel versions so far (i'm not going to be brave enough to say any kernel!!) Just to add - if you make sure the 'conf.modules' file contains the following lines (the first being the standard one) you can automatically force it on every boot up so nothing ever appears to be wrong ;-) 'alias sound sblive' #Setup alias 'insert sblive insmod -f sblive' #Explicitly tell the kernel to use the insmod -f #command - could be any command you like BTW - am i the only one whose having problems with the SBLive and sound under enlightenment/X windows since upgrading to the 2.2.9-27 kernel ?? Re: [newbie] Cannot mount ATAPI CDR when using SCSI emulation - jrt
You need to change your FSTAB entries to point to the new scsi emulated CD's, ie - something along the lines of: /dev/sr0/mnt/cdwriter etc. etc. /dev/sr1/mnt/cdreaderetc. etc. Also if you use graphical mounting via icons under KDE or Gnome, you will need to do the same there. As far as the kernel size is concerned when you recompiled, did you do a 'make zImage' or a 'make bzImage'. Since kernel 2.2.x i have not been able to get a kernel small enough without doing the bzImage, but i've not yet had problems where i've had to sacrifice stuff to module status. You don't have to do anything else different apart from the make command above. Martin.
Re: [newbie] wine
Caught me out too only the other night ! When i saw the MANDRAKE_PARTC etc, i assumed i had to set environment variables of these names pointing to where i really wanted them to be, but still no luck. Turns out substituting the text for the real paths (as root) in '/etc/wine.conf' or '~/.winerc' (make a copy of /etc/wine.conf called that) if you want per user configuration. Typical paths might be : For 'MANDRAKE_FLOPPY' substitute '/dev/fd0' For 'MANDRAKE_PARTC' i used '/win' (as that's where my windows dir is mounted). Follow this through to the end of the file (there's a couple more in there somewhere) and you should get things working. This _MAY_ not be how it's meant to be, but it certainly worked for me. Martin. PS: Again, i may be wrong, but i think you _MUST_ specify a program to run. Hi all. I've just managed to get my SBLive card to work using the driver supplied by creative and my new install of Mandrake 6 (kernel 2.2.9). To get it going i had to ignore the instructions from creative and do an 'insmod -f' instead of a 'modprobe'. Okay, it threw up a warning, but the end result works perfectly. Re: [newbie] Relevance of Mandrake
Just my 2p worth I recently installed RH6 on a new hard disk having rebuilt my PC. Mainly for curiosity as i knew i would blow it away again when Mandrake 6 comes out. The following doesn't work out of the box... 1. BS/DEL problem with X. 2. UK keyboard map requested during install, but don't work. 3. Zip drive not preconfiured on desktop. 4. CD Writer not configured on Desktop (actually never gets detected, only the reader that was in use during install - could this be addressed please ??) 5. No user mount/dismount on devices. 6. No ftp access to machine by default. Now i'm not asking for help with these things (i can't be bothered, i'm only binding time until Mandrake 6 comes out) - i could fix them all very easily, but that's not the point newbies might not be able to !! The point is, this is only a small list as i'm not using the box in question at the moment, there were a lot more 'niggly' things. I can guarantee when Mandrake 6 comes out all bar one of these will not need to be done on my next install. Need i say more... He told me that once he was done he would install RedHat 6.0 for me. I told him I wanted Mandrake and this is what he said: "Mandrake is dead. The whole idea behind Mandrake was to integrate KDE with RedHat. Now that RedHat has KDE as an option, what's the need for Mandrake?" In response I muttered a couple of things about extra tidbits that come with Mandrake but I did not sound very convincing, even to myself. I think that Mandrake needs a new mission statement or manifesto; what's present on the website is no longer satisfactory. I want to stick with Mandrake in part because I believe that RedHat's former anti-KDE attitude truly hurt (or at least slowed down) the Linux cause and I do not really want to reward them for merely caving in to the pressure that distros like Mandrake put them under. Unless Mandrake Linux convincingly and clearly reassesses its raison d'etre and redirects its focus to present and potential members of the Linux community, I am afraid that this wonderful distro will indeed become irrelevant. Now it may be that the leaders of the Mandrake organization are clear about this, but the info on the web page (e.g. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fpolicy.html and http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ffaq.html ) does not reflect this in a coherent and convincing way. Re: [newbie] RedHat 6.0 revisited
Long post follows (sorry)... Obviously this is off topic, but since you're asking, i just installed RH6 as a test system at work while i wait for Mandrake 6. I did the same as you and had a look at Gnome, after logging out and logging back in again this time specifying KDE it now remembers this as my users default. [Anyone not interesed in how this was done can stop here!!]... I did make a change to the system however - the GDM xdm clone seemed to be broken as far as XDMCP broadcasts were concerned (no 177 packets being sent out), so i changed back to KDM (as this is what i know and love) and XDMCP started working. It was after this change that i noticed that my default window manager was remembered. To make the change, there is a symbolic link in '/etc/X11' which points 'prefdm' to '../../usr/bin/gdm' rename this out of the way and create a symbolic link that points prefdm to '../../usr/bin/kdm'. Reboot the machine (unfortunately just switching run levels didn't work), and all will be back, but with KDM as your X login. As someone else commented earlier, it's damn annoying that RH have not installed KDE to /opt/bin like the rest of the world (or is it just me). Re: [newbie] Mounting SCSI ZIP
[SNIP] Now that I have my SCSI card and ZIP drive recognized on boot, how do I mount it? I know that I can use hd for hardrives and fd for floppy drives, but what is a SCSI removable disk drive? Will the mounting automatically sense the FAT16 partition on the ZIP and load VFAT? [SNIP] As per the other replies on the list, you must know which device your zip disk is. If it is the only scsi drive in your system it will be /dev/sda4 if it's the second, /dev/sdb4 and so on. By far and away the easiest method to setting this up is to edit your fstab file (found in /etc). Add the following line (changing the partition and the mount point as required): /dev/sda4 /mnt/zipvfatuser,noauto 0 0 All the parameters are seperated by tabs (difficult to do in email). The vfat allows you to use long filenames (case sensitive) if you wish and will mean your zip disks are readable as a Win95/98 Fat32 disk, but can also happily be read in Linux. The user, noauto means any user can mount/unmount the disks, the noauto means don't try to mount any present disk on bootup (simply remove if you'd rather this did happen). Once you've added this line (as root), you can simply type at the command prompt 'mount /mnt/zip' - the system will look into /etc/fstab to find out what to do so you don't need to tell it every time. Of course as this is a Mandrake list, what you should really do is to add an icon on your desktop, but thats really straightforward and this emails getting long, so if you want to do that and don't know how send another post Regards, Martin.

[SNIP] Well, i don't think my card was a 1520b, but then again i beleive the only difference between the 1520 and the 1520b was the addition of the scsi floppy interface, so my details should work. You can try several things. The easiest is to select 'specify options' and when prompted the parameter is (all on one line): 'aha152x=0xI/O,IRQ,ID OF HOST,1' (don't remember what the 1 stood for !!). In my case the line was 'aha152x=0x340,10,7,1'. I seem to think that this is not a particularly unusual setup. Another way which SHOULD work is to add this to the boot prompt and things should then auto detect, but i can't remember exactly what the syntax is for this - something like 'linux append='aha152x,0x340,10,7,1' '. If this way works for you then you must put the append= part into your lilo.conf and rerun lilo after installation. Try the first method, it'll probably be far easier. Regards, Martin.
