[newbie] SBLive! under 6.1 - success

1999-10-01 Thread Martin White

Or should that be SUCCESS!!

Just to confirm - recompiling your kernel without
version information on modules DOES allow you to force the insertion of the
current module available from Creative. On successful reboot you get all the
glorious sounds you would expect from your most wonderful Sound Blaster
Live!!!

Now, the next question is how to write this up in a
newbie friendly way ;o)

If i think of something easy i'll post again - of
course the easiest would be for the next kernel from Mandrake to be compiled
this way in the first place!.

Don't know if anyone from Mandrake is listening,
but how about it guys? - would save a lot of people a lot of hassle, not to
mention myself the bandwidth of putting of a new kernel RPM up on my
website.

There's been a bit of talk of late about ISO images including updates. I
just had a browse around the Mandrake site and spotted the instructions
 for
getting the Cassini mirror (that's under way now, but that's not why i
  post).

In those instructions, it tells you to get the mirror and then run
  'genhdlist /6.1bdir'

Using this technique, could i then copy my 6.0 ISO to the hard disk.
Overwrite the relevent files wth all the updates, and then update the
 hdlist
file and create a new updated ISO image ??

Yes. The program genhdlis is in the /misc directory on the CD. Here is
what
 I have learned:

For example, I created a directory named /usr/local/newcd. I then copied
all
the files from the actual cd to /usr/local/newcd so that I have a
 /usr/local/newcd/Mandrake directory and a /usr/local/newcd/Mandrake/RPMS
directory and so on. Then cd /usr/local/newcd/MISC and ./genhdlis
 /usr/local/newcd.

First, make certain you delete the older versions of the rpm's after you
have updated the rpm's. If you have any special rpm's, you could put them
in
the /APPS directory. You can also delete any unneeded rpm's (like the
manpages for languages for which you have no need). You should also check
 dependencies for any replacement rpm's.

I also updated the dos utilities (rawrite2, the current RawWrite for
Windows, some other stuff) and included additional docs that I found
useful.
Also, I got the most current Lnx4Win files and even took the gui install
 stuff from cooker.

If you want to modify the packages that are installed by default, the list
is in /Mandrake/BASE/COMPS. For a simple, non-networked desktop computer,
you could eliminate a lot of stuff. You could also make any special rpm's
a
part of the base install or any new menu choice you make.

To test your "new" CD, try a hard drive install. If it works, burn
yourself
 a new customized CD.

FWIW, don't try copying and replacing files in Win9x - the CD filenames in
Win9x are shown in 8.3 format and the capitalization of directory names
can
change causing scripts to fail to execute.

 Have fun.

[newbie] Neomagic 256ZX anyone ?

1999-09-15 Thread Martin White

Hi,

Just setting up Mandrake on my laptop (correction _trying_ to set it up),
and can't get X running at a decent res.

The laptop is a Dell Lattitude CPt333GT and has a Neomagic MagicMedia 256ZX
chipset on board with 4MB of video ram. Has anyone else tried
(successfully!) to get this machine going ?

Checked out Xfree86.org, but they simply list 'Neomagic' without anymore
details - i'll pull down 3.3.5 of xfree later today.

Thanks,
Martin.

Re: [newbie] Neomagic 256ZX anyone ?

1999-09-15 Thread Martin White

Just to follow up my own post (humour me !), installed the Xfree 3.3.5
packages from sunsite's 6.1 mirror (incidentally, the Mandrake site
specifically states 6.1 is not out yet, yet sunsite don't have anything but
6.1 and 6.1b !?!) and then managed to force the Neomagic 128 option of the
SVGA server to work by telling X that my card was a 128 with a 2200 chipset
rather than a 256ZX.

After telling it to use the external display we have a rather lovely
1024x768 display at 16bpp.

Unless anyone has any better suggestion (ie a server specifically for the
256ZX) then don't worry about my original post.

 HELP!!

I just got off the phone with Amazon.com and Red Hat.com Legal departments
and guess what the hot-breaking-heart-breaking news is?

You can no longer refer to Red Hat Linux GPL distribution using the words
Red Hat. Now it has to be called "I wanna be Microsoft" or "anonymous
linux
6.0" or something similar, since the Red Hat name can no longer appear on
ANY GPL PRODUCTS or ads. That's right, the GPL distribution of Red Hat
Linux can no longer be called Red Hat Linux, it now MUST have a new name.
No more Red Hat GPL CD's, advertisements, support groups, netnews,
 nothing...

I know this sounds incredibly unbelievable, but the Red Hat GPL
distribution
can no longer be advertised or labelled Red Hat, only the official boxed
set. As a linux seller on Amazon.com, I (along with 100 other people)
sell
a GPL version of the distribution formerly known as Red Hat Linux GPL. We
now will be required to say we are selling 'blah' Linux 6.0 and will have
to
remove any labelling on products referring to the GPL Linux Distribution.

How will people know they are getting Red Hat Linux GPL if it can't carry
the name? You guess, because I haven't a clue...

Of course the legal counsel rep, and only person in the entire Red Hat
organization who can respond, David Shumannfang, is currently on vacation
and won't be available for a week (9-7-99). Basically we are all screwed
and no one at Red Hat knows anything until his return, just lovely.

This email is a plea for you to email [EMAIL PROTECTED] and voice your
displeasure over Red Hat's new copyright policy requiring their GPL
distribution to be called something other than Red Hat Linux GPL.

I know this is off topic, so flame away, but it is an issue that AFFECTS
ALL
RED HAT LINUX USERS and POTENTIAL USERS.

Hi,

Managed to successfully loose the contents of all my HD's the other night,
and whilst i re-installed everything in the end i have a couple of
questions.

I have a 2x4x CDRW as my Secondry master (hdc) and a 5x32x DVD as my
secondry slave (hdd). Obviously i wanted to install usinmg the DVD drive as
it's way quicker, but try as i might i couldn't get the Mandrake install to
find it. Is this because it's a DVD or is it just default that when a CD
isn't found in HDC it doesn't bother looking at HDD.

Could my install think it's a hard disk as on bootup i get 'starting hard
disk optimizations' for hda, hdb AND hdd !!

If either of my ussumptions are correct, can this behaviour be overridden
with any options in LILO ?

Thanks again !!

And I appreciate it. It was sold to me as a 9.1 GB scsi, so
that may be the capacity of it. However, the PDF file for

it is reported as in Linux) says it's a 10.5 Gig drive.
*shrug* I can't find anything on the model number it

 John

This wouldn't possibly explain why Linux reports the lower capacity of the
drive on boot up, but it's not just a difference between formatted capacity
and unformatted capacity is it ??

MANY manufacturures (?) exagerrate the capacities of their drives by quoting
the bare unformatted figure - totally unrealistic, as whatever file system
you format a disk with it ALWAYS reduces in size - the larger the disk, the
more scary the amount of size you lose.

Can't think off the top of my head whether a 1.5GB reduction is reasonable
or not - it does sound a little excessive!

I'm trying to use Xwin-32 and connect to my Linux machine by rlogin. I
have some experience doing this on OSF machines, there really isn't a lot
to it. After I uncommented the appropriate lines in inetd.conf so the
rlogin and rexec demons would actually get going, I was at a stage where I
could rlogin as a normal interactive session.

Now, when I try to launch an Xwin session, I get a "Connection Closed"
error. The troubleshooting section of the manual would probably be pretty
useful to someone who knew what they were doing: it says that the problem
 is one of three things:
-You are trying to connect using rexec and rexecd or in.rexec will not
 allow the connection to continue.
-Your host is running SunOs...(I think I can ignore this one)
-Your host is running a tcp wrapper that closes the connection for
security
 reasons.

What's a TCP wrapper, how do I tell if I'm using one, and how do I turn it
off? If it turns out that's not the problem, am I just out of luck?

 thanks...Greg

[SNIP]

XWin 32 (when i used it at least) was a swine to set up with anything too
much other than XDMCP. I seem to recall the manual saying something about
the fact that you absolutely MUST be logging in using the same user name as
that of the netbios name of the windows machine you are trying to login
from.

I also recall that the Linux box needed to be able to resolve your IP
address. I also think there were a couple of places where this resolution
needed to be placed.

Sorry if it's all a bit vague - it's been a while. Certainly i got fantastic
results when i just used XDMCP broadcast mode in full screen - any chance of
trying that instead of rlogin/rexec (obviously i appreciate that might not
fit in with what you are trying to do !)

Re: [newbie] new sound card suggestions ??

1999-08-24 Thread Martin White

Glad to hear the instructions were of help !!

A BIG word of warning though - consider carefully if the kernel upgrade will
actually give you anything extra that you REALLY need or fix any problems
that you REALLY need fixing. I recently learnt my first painful lesson in
the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' way of thinking.

I upgraded to the 2.2.9-27mdk kernel - simply because i thought it would be
nice to try the latest (that was when it was the latest from Mandrake !!).
All of a sudden my SBLive stopped working. So i went back down to my
previous kernel (and yes i did remember to do all the stuff with LILO), and
it still didn't work. To cut a very long stroy short, i had to do a complete
re-install to get things back to a working state.

As i mentioned in another post yesterday, my kernel upgrade was a pointless
excercise - no extra functionality, simply security fixes. My box is only
ever connected to my laptop - never anything like the net as i don't have a
modem in it. I beleive i don't pose much of a security threat to myself, so
all i did was cause myself a lot of work !!

Just my thoughts.

Martin.

If you go to the updates page of the Mandrake site it has a blurb on this
bug.

Everyone should be updating their kernel to 2.2.9-27 anyway because of a
security bug... but this as well as the initscripts is what is needed to
 fix the unmount bug..

Don't know if the kernel upgrade specifically address anything to do with
the unmounting bug (i have my doubts as all i updated were the init scripts
and then the problem went away), but it's certainly not true to say everyone
should upgrade the kernel because of the security bug.

I don't have a modem in my PC - i have a laptop running W98 for work, and
use that instead. Therefore, as the Linux box is never connected to anyone
except itself, this means no security threat !!

I have that bug as well.. I have updated initscripts.. I need to download
and update the kernel now.. OH NO!! LOL!! hopefully I wont bugger up my
system

Okay, i haven't read the updates page - but didn't the unmount problem go
away after just upgrading the initscripts ??

The URL to the linux drivers homepage is:

Tried to checkout that link, but it seemed to be broke, so for the time
being try this.

My install is still on kernel 2.2.9-19mdk, so the directories in the
following will need changing accordingly if you have upgraded your kernel.
If you've done that, i'll assume you know enough to just follow the
following...

http://www/whitem.demon.co.uk/sblive.htm

The file referred to from Creative's site is 'emu10k1-0.3b.tar.gz'.

The instructions were in response to a previous post when the latest version
of the driver came out. So far no-one has told me anything to the contrary,
so i assume they work (i have given the URL out quite a few times now).

If they don't, can someone tell me why and i'll try and correct the
instructions (incidentally, i have had a few replies thanking me, so i guess
they do!!). Obviously if resources are conflicting with modems and stuff,
that might be a different matter altogether. Give it a go and let me know
(although i won't get any mail again until the morning now).

Good luck,

SMP is indeed for dual processor support, but from what i recall, the SBLive
module specifcally requires that you DON'T have smp support in your kernel.

You shouldn't need to recompile your kernel at all to get it working. I just

I am a linux newbie, but have been in IT for 5 years no and from that back
ground I would say Linux is in the stage "coming of age". I believe it is
not for the new computer user but is definitely for the average- advanced
computer user. Someone with a little computer experience under their
belt.
With a few more click and pick interfaces, and support for more types of
devices eg usb and more divervse device support it will become a Windows
 killer.

I whole heartedly agree with this. After all, exactly who is 'the average
joe' ?? More and more people these days, know plenty enough about computers
and OSs to be able to get on with Mandrake.

For starters the percentage of people that use a PC at home and are also IT
professionals has to be pretty high doesn't it ??

If linux developers got the support from hardware and software
manufactures
that Microsoft does, Linux would have already beaten Microsoft for the
most
 superior OS.

These are my thoughts only and do not represent anyone else.

Re: [newbie] Voodoo3

Bit busy at the moment - but do you have the linux mod's (drivers in Windows
terms) for the V3. The location to get them from is mentioned on 3DFXs web
site under Linux Drivers.

You should have 3 RPMs. Put them in their own directory and then do (as
root) an 'rpm -Uvh *rpm'

After that run (again as root) 'XF86Setup' - you might as well say no to
using your existing config as defaults as that's wrong anyway.

Although the standard SVGA server 'supports' the V3, you need the custom
server mentioned above to get it working properly (ie at a decent
resolution/color depth).

I did a complete wipe of my root partition and re-install, then stayed WELL

It's all been perfect ever since. Incidentally, i had this problem with the

This has been covered a few times lately, and yep, it's no problem. You
don't specifiy which kernel you have, so i can't tell you which of the three
modules from Creative's tar file to use.

If you have the standard 2.2.9-19mdk that comes with 6.0, use the 2.2.5
module. If you have a 2.0.xx kernel, use the 2.0.36 module, any kernel
2.2.10 or higher, try the 2.2.10 module.

Once you've copied the module into your '/lib/modules/2.2.x.-xxmdk/misc'
directory as 'emu10k1.o', check out
www.whitem.demon.co.uk/my_conf_modules.htm . The last four lines should be
what you will need to insert into your '/etc/conf.modules' to pull it all
together at boot time.

Any further problems either check out the archives, or let the list know !!

'conf.modules' can be found at

An alternative, but not as tidy method would be to insert the line that you

Hope this helps.

Re: [newbie] SAMBA troubles!

1999-07-28 Thread Martin White

I would agree with this one - we get this a lot at our offices.

Are we to assume that all of the machines in question are on the same
network - we have token ring and ethernet and getting things to appear in
the network neighbourhood across the two networks is a bit of a work of art
!!

Doing a 'Find Computer' in windows will always find a machine if both the
one you want to find and the one finding it are running WINS (in our case
anyway) - this is all a bit above my head - i really should find out about
all this and get to the bottom of it, but all i'm saying is there are plenty
of other things that could prevent the PC from appearing in the network
neighbourhood even if Samba is totally present and correct.

Of course, also test to make sure the Win95 machines can see the Linux

Tom's reply to this says a lot more than i would have even thought of - good
one !!

All i'll add is that if you're specifically wanting to upgrade your SB16 -
and i guess by now you may be - then (assuming finances are not a problem) i
really can't think of a reason to suggest that you don't buy an SBLive. They
are pretty damn good.

Obviously if your current card was an awe64 or higher, the advice would
probably be way different.

Also, if there is anything unsupported that you want with the SBLive (not
that i can think of anything), Creative don't seem to be too slow with their
updates - there have been 3 versions in the 6-8 weeks since i bought mine,
so i guess it wouldn't be a problem for long anyway.

What I would want the sound card for is LInux, as I do not use Windows at

good mp3 file playback. I had heard that with there earlier releases,
Creative
still had not got the midi or mp3 playback working that well. So my main
concerne is how they got the midi and mp3 sound working. As far as normal
system sounds, such as .au .wav .voc etc. my SB16 can even handle that
well
enough, my only reason for buying the SB Live would be for improved midi

mp3 playback. Can you give me any advice in that area?

I missed the bulk of this thread, but caught an early one and a late one and
think i have the jist !!

You may well just need to try again with the 'make bzimage' (you did do a
'make bzimage', didn't you not a 'make zimage' ?). I have had instances in
the past where it didn't work first time, but did on the second / third
attempt - strange i know, but there you go.

With the 'bzimage' bit under Mandrake, the kernels are normally too big for
the normal 'zimage'.

If i got the wrong end of the stick here i apologize.

For the time being pick up the modules from Creative's site, copy them to

You will also need to have put the pre/post install lines into your

Re: [Re: [newbie] SBlive in Mandrake 2.2.9]

1999-07-23 Thread Martin White

Hi,

Checked out the new driver - not much luck if i used the one for kernel
2.2.10 - not all that surprising really as 2.2.9-19 is LOWER than that one
!! (The CD player stuff works fine, but as soon as i play an MP3 which will
use the wave table support (??) it breaks and needs a reboot - an unclean
one at that).

If, however you use the one called 'emu10k1.o-2.2.5-15' everything seems to
work fine. Is it just my over keen imagination or does the SBLive start to
sound better out of 4 speakers now than with the previous driver - starting
to sound as good as it does under windows now - anyone else comment on this
??

Okay - do the following (exactly everything Creative recommend you _DONT_
do, so i take no responsibilty for this ;-) it works fine for me tho!)

DO IT ALL AS ROOT (su -)

Untar/zip the file from creative.
'cp emu10k1.o-2.2.5-15 /lib/modules/2.2.9-19mdk/misc/emu10k1.o'
Remove any existing sound lines from conf.modules
Add the following...
'alias sound emu10k1'
'options emu10k1 -f'
'pre-install emu10k1 insmod soundcore'
'post-remove emu10k1 rmmod soundcore'
Save the file reboot.

Instead of rebooting you could come out of X and then do...
'rmmod soundcore'
'rmmod sblive' (or whatever your old module was called)
'insmod -f emu10k1'

For reference my conf.modules can be found at
www.whitem.demon.co.uk/my_conf_modules.htm

Check out the whole site if you like www.whitem.demon.co.uk you might find
something else of interest there !!

Good luck,
Martin.

PS: I can still send the old version if you really want, but you shouldn't
need it the new one seems to work handsomly.

mod_conf
install_emu10k1
emu10k1.o-2.2.5-15
emu10k1.o-2.2.10
emu10k1.o-2.0.36

1. Determine your kernel sound modules installation location
 (usually /lib/modules/2.x.y/misc)

I did it the driversare in "/lib/modules/2.2.9-19mdk/misc"

2. Copy the appropriate driver to that location as emu10k1.o
 (eg. /lib/modules/2.x.y/misc/emu10k1.o)

I tried it butwhat is the right file? for my kernel version?

3. Unload all existing soundcard drivers, including soundcore

May be here is the problem, how must I do it?

4. Remove all old soundcard references from /etc/conf.modules

In my "conf.modules" file are not sound drivers is a file with 3 lines

5. Add a new reference to the driver in /etc/conf.modules:
(eg. "alias sound emu10k1" or "alias char-major-14 emu10k1")

6. If your kernel is compiled with version information, add the following
lines to /etc/conf.modules after the previous statement:
 pre-install emu10k1 insmod soundcore
 post-remove emu10k1 rmmod soundcore

How can I verify if "my kernel is compiled with version information"?

oki, just copy the file emu10k1.o-2.2.10 to /lib/modules/2.2.9-19mdk

 rename it to emu10k1.o

That's it, that's all the installation it takes

 to load the module, type

 modprobe soundcore
 insmod -f emu10k1

then try whathever sound app, it should work

You WILL get a warning after insmod -f saying that you have the wrong
kernel
version, but you can ignore that.

 Good luck

Re: [newbie] Voodoo 3000

1999-07-19 Thread Martin White

You should have three RPMS in total. One is the X server, one is some RUSH
libraries (?!), the last is an updated setup program that know of the V3000.

Install all the RPMS (in no particular order) using 'rpm -Uvh nnn.rpm'
(replace the n's with the rpm names - or if they are the only rpms in the
dir do 'rpm -Uvh *rpm').

Then run the setup program - i think it was 'XF86Setup' (case sensitive).
You may as well say no to using your existing file as defaults, it won't be
any good anyway.

The rest is self explanatory, but i can carry on if you need...

I know how to do this with a kernel recompile, but want to know if there is

At the end of the day, it doesn't affect anything, it would just be nice to

I've made the changes to the rc3.d filenames (S45pcmcia to S98pcmcia),
and it rebooted and ran fine the first time. Since then, I've run Win98
a few times, (It's kinda flakey, but I haven't played with Dosemu or
 WINE yet).

This morning, I started up Linux, and once again it doesn't recognzie
the keyboard. I can still boot in single-user mode, where I can see
that in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S98pcmcia is still there, and S45pcmcia hasn't
 reappeared.

Also, I've also noticed that on the laptop, a P2/233, the Bogomips shown
on boot is 115.51 when running off the battery, down from it's 232.61
when plugged in. Is that an indication of something broken in part of
the setup, or is it really clocking itself down to 1/2 speed while it
 runs on the battery?

The strange bogomips display could well be down to the fact that some
laptops (my Dell Latitude in particular) have a setting in the bios which
tell the CPU to slow down, when it's not loaded in order to save the
battery.

As Linux doesn't use up so much cpu power as windows ;-) - especially on
bootup - the cpu's probably really is going that slow at that time.

 pre-install sound insmod sound dmabuf=1

I'll check this one out, but again, i'm not sure how relevent it is to the

it does (do all sound cards ??) what should i do if it uses two.

Thankfully i still dual boot, so i can check all this stuff out in Windows.

Someone at my LUG meeting tonight speculated that in machines with large

problems with sound cards. I don't know if the observation has merit or not.
My sound problems stopped when I swapped my SB16 for and older ESS1688. (I

[newbie] Satellite 4080CDT

1999-07-08 Thread Martin White

A work colleague of mine has just installed Mandrake 6 on his new Toshiba
Satellite 4080 CDT. The install went fine (okay, we had to skip the X config
as i know the video is only supported by a 'custom' X server i have located
for him).

After rebooting into run level 3, the keyboard is locked and you can do
nothing but hit the power button - networking wasn't setup during install
as it uses a PCMCIA card that wasn't listed - so i thought we'd do it later.
This means i can't telnet on and change runlevels.

I'm at a bit of a loss. If i boot to runlevel 1 using 'linux single'
everything is fine (after fixeing the filesystem problems caused by having
to hit the power button). But i don't know how to strip out all unnesscary
daemons from RL3 - if i run setup from RL1, i only get to set the daemons
that i want loaded for RL1.

Where do i start to get this up and running for him ?? - any ideas ?

Thanks,
Martin.

Re: [newbie] Satellite 4080CDT

1999-07-08 Thread Martin White

The following URL gave me the info to fix the problem...

http://www.submm.caltech.edu/~shimpei/laptop/#keyboard

Basically what you need to do is boot into the system using 'linux single'
at the lilo prompt - don't know how to do this if you're not using lilo, but
if you're on the Mandrake list you probably are !!

Fix any filesystem problems that have probably caused by having to switch
off last time you booted (fsck /dev/hda5 for instance - and answer Y to
fixing everything).

If you had to fix the disk, reboot, again making sure you go 'linux single'
(V IMPORTANT or you could be there all day fixing fs problems).

Now, go to the directory /etc/rc.d/rcn.d (where n = the runlevel you wish to
use) and do 'mv S45pcmcia S98pcmcia'. This delays the loading of the pcmcia
till later in the boot and cures the keyboard problem.

Note that you will need to do this every time you make a change to the
system daemons with ntsysv or setup - anyone know of a more permanent way ??

Problem solved !!
Martin.

Sounds like this is a problem for the whole 40xx series. I've got a

had similar problems after upgrading kernels (or adding APMd, he's not

Updating the pcmcia-cs doesn't seem to do any good, and I don't know

Re: [newbie] Yet another Sound Blaster problem

1999-07-08 Thread Martin White

To all who have offered suggestions on this one, thanks, but i'm still
stuck.

If i do a 'play my.wav' at the prompt the sample (or a very small snippet of
it) just loops until i reboot the pc.

Doing an 'insmod -f sblive dmabuf=1' produces an error saying that the
symbol wasn't recognised (in fact doing a 'modinfo -p sblive' suggests that
it takes no parameters at all!).

Downgrading the six audio / esound / sox packages didn't make the slightest
difference, but haven't tried downgrading the kernel yet.

Where do i go from here - please don't say get another sound card, that's
not an option, i actually wanted this one that's why i bought it. Also don't
say 'mail creative about releasing the source' - that don't fix my problem
neither (well short term anyway). ???

Martin.
PS: As 'play' doesn't work, i guess it has nothing to do with esound or X
windows.

[newbie] Yet another Sound Blaster problem

1999-07-07 Thread Martin White

Okay folks,

I'm getting hacked off with this now, so it's time for post. I have an
SBLive which was working perfectly under the basic Mandrake 6 install (ie
2.2.9-19 kernel and basic esound + audio RPMS).

I decided to upgrade the kernel and then apply all the updates, then i
started to get problems. My sound no longer works when i try to start X -
the speakers just violently click away to themselves (i don't know if audio
works in a terminal as i never use one - what app could i try to find out?).

I'm about to 'downgrade' first the sound related RPMs and then the kernel
RPMs. That is if i can find them on the Mandrake site - i keep leaving the
CD at work !

If that doesn't work does anyone know what else could be broken (quite
honestly if that doesn't work then it has me beat as it was upgrading them
that broke my setup in the first place!!).

Has anyone else had any luck with all the upgrades and the SBLive module
(with the '-f' to force it).

Thanks for any help, this is starting to dive me nuts (as well as this
laptop keyboard!).

Martin.

Re: [newbie] SBLive under Mandrake 6.0

1999-07-05 Thread Martin White

Glad to see someone's managed to work out that you can force the SBLive
module to load under all the kernel versions so far (i'm not going to be
brave enough to say any kernel!!)

Just to add - if you make sure the 'conf.modules' file contains the
following lines (the first being the standard one) you can automatically
force it on every boot up so nothing ever appears to be wrong ;-)

'alias sound sblive' #Setup alias
'insert sblive insmod -f sblive' #Explicitly tell the kernel to use the
insmod -f
   #command - could be any
command you like

BTW - am i the only one whose having problems with the SBLive and sound
under enlightenment/X windows since upgrading to the 2.2.9-27 kernel ?? It
just makes my speakers click away to themselves and X needs to be killed.
All worked okay up until the kernel upgrade.

I have taken notes of the thread about upgrading various RPMS a while back -
does it sound like that would help me?

Re: [newbie] Cannot mount ATAPI CDR when using SCSI emulation - jrt

1999-06-11 Thread Martin White

You need to change your FSTAB entries to point to the new scsi emulated
CD's, ie - something along the lines of:

/dev/sr0/mnt/cdwriter etc. etc.
/dev/sr1/mnt/cdreaderetc. etc.

Also if you use graphical mounting via icons under KDE or Gnome, you will
need to do the same there.

As far as the kernel size is concerned when you recompiled, did you do a
'make zImage' or a 'make bzImage'. Since kernel 2.2.x i have not been able
to get a kernel small enough without doing the bzImage, but i've not yet had
problems where i've had to sacrifice stuff to module status.

You don't have to do anything else different apart from the make command
above.

Martin.

Re: [newbie] wine

Caught me out too only the other night !

When i saw the MANDRAKE_PARTC etc, i assumed i had to set environment
variables of these names pointing to where i really wanted them to be, but
still no luck.

Turns out substituting the text for the real paths (as root) in
'/etc/wine.conf' or '~/.winerc' (make a copy of /etc/wine.conf called that)
if you want per user configuration.

Typical paths might be :

For 'MANDRAKE_FLOPPY' substitute '/dev/fd0'
For 'MANDRAKE_PARTC' i used '/win' (as that's where my windows dir is
mounted).

Follow this through to the end of the file (there's a couple more in there
somewhere) and you should get things working.

This _MAY_ not be how it's meant to be, but it certainly worked for me.

Martin.
PS: Again, i may be wrong, but i think you _MUST_ specify a program to run.
Try 'wine notepad' as a starting point as that one's worked for eons.

Not going to harp on about this as it wasn't the point of the original post,
but you can run two OS's at the same time - checkout http://www.vmware.com
Currently allows you to run another OS from Linux (not just Win95/98/NT, but
also OS/2, DOS, etc.), and shortly to be released, a version that will allow
another OS from within NT.

Need a pretty beefy spec PC tho (and yes i believe it only runs on PC's, not
Sparcs etc.)! Oh yeah, and the two OS's can act like they think they are two
seperate PCs on your own private little LAN if you wish !!

...oh and another thing, I wouldn't advise connecting a windows machine
in a place where there are lots of other windows machines,to
a unix server and running a cool window manager like enlightenment.

...as you'll be hounded by people going "ooo, what's that, that looks
cool" "can you show me how to do that.."

I thought that was the whole idea ;-) The more people see cool desktop
environments like enlightenment (and yes i'm, afraid i do prefer it over
KDE, always have done - just couldn't be bothered with configuring it since
i tried DR0.9), the more people are likely to show an interest in Linux.

Okay, there's plenty more to a decent OS than a cool working environment (or

Just my 2p worth

I recently installed RH6 on a new hard disk having rebuilt my PC. Mainly for
curiosity as i knew i would blow it away again when Mandrake 6 comes out.

The following doesn't work out of the box...
1. BS/DEL problem with X.
2. UK keyboard map requested during install, but don't work.
3. Zip drive not preconfiured on desktop.
4. CD Writer not configured on Desktop (actually never gets detected, only
the reader that was in use during install - could this be addressed please
??)
5. No user mount/dismount on devices.
6. No ftp access to machine by default.

Now i'm not asking for help with these things (i can't be bothered, i'm only
binding time until Mandrake 6 comes out) - i could fix them all very easily,
but that's not the point newbies might not be able to !!

The point is, this is only a small list as i'm not using the box in question
at the moment, there were a lot more 'niggly' things. I can guarantee when
Mandrake 6 comes out all bar one of these will not need to be done on my
next install.

Need i say more...

 Dear folks:

I recently spoke to my computer hardware dealer about upgrading some of
my computer parts. He told me that once he was done he would install
RedHat 6.0 for me. I told him I wanted Mandrake and this is what he
 said:

"Mandrake is dead. The whole idea behind Mandrake was to integrate KDE
with RedHat. Now that RedHat has KDE as an option, what's the need for
 Mandrake?"

In response I muttered a couple of things about extra tidbits that come
with Mandrake but I did not sound very convincing, even to myself. I
think that Mandrake needs a new mission statement or manifesto; what's
present on the website is no longer satisfactory. I want to stick with
Mandrake in part because I believe that RedHat's former anti-KDE
attitude truly hurt (or at least slowed down) the Linux cause and I do
not really want to reward them for merely caving in to the pressure that
distros like Mandrake put them under. Unless Mandrake Linux convincingly
and clearly reassesses its raison d'etre and redirects its focus to
present and potential members of the Linux community, I am afraid that
this wonderful distro will indeed become irrelevant. Now it may be that
the leaders of the Mandrake organization are clear about this, but the
 info on the web page
 (e.g. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fpolicy.html and
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ffaq.html ) does not reflect this in a
 coherent and convincing way.

 Best wishes to all

I agree Redhat 6.0 has problems but again these can be addressed and fixed
by RedHat so lets find another reason to keep Mandrake around as a
distro!!!
Mandrake can't keep coming out with versions that just fix or beautify
RedHat and still be considered a player in the distribution wars!! Please
MandrakeSoft brainstorm and come up with an idea that will make Mandrake a
 bit more unique!!!

I'm really not sure i want to start any kind of 'whos better than who'
thread here (but i'm going to anyway!). It's up to Mandrakesoft to defend
themselves on this one - after all it makes no odds to me which distribution
i use as long as it suits me.

All i really meant is that personally i find Mandrake to be more configured
the way i want as standard (and slightly more polished to boot). That in
turn saves me time and ultimately money.

If two shops were selling the same item of clothing, one fitted you slightly
better, and was available cheaper and easier (for me anyway) then you
wouldn't complain about the cheaper one existing then - would you ? .Why not
have the same item available from more than one place?

Obviously you can then go on to look at the differences in distro's in terms
of Lothar and all the other things that may or may not be in the pipeline.

Over to Mandrakesoft

I would burn my CDs on Linux but with a IDE-CDRW as Yahama 4416 the
common progs as cdwrite, cdrecord and Gcombust seem not works (and
explain that I have to activate the IDE-SCSI emulation).

After doing some thinking on this one it looks like even with the newer
kernels, a recompile will be required enabling the scsi emulation to get
stuff like CDRoast working with IDE drives (shame really).

Does anyone know if there is a linux CDR program around that will support
ide drives ??

If not, is there anyone out there who fancies doing a recompile of the
kernel from a standard mandrake install (might as well wait until version
6), leaving all options as standard, but enable the scsi emulation with a
view to producing an RPM for all the people who want scsi emulation but are
afraid to do the recompile.

I don't mind giving it a go myself as i'm really not shy of these things,
but whenever i've done a kernel recompile in the past, lots of other things
(mainly networking) have not come back up fully operational ;-(.

why dont you just download kernel 2.2.5 from www.kernel.org

Could do... i'm wary of doing this as i'm sure there would have been a good
reason for the progression from 2.2.5 to 2.2.5-15 - normally bugs - usually
security type bugs !!

Anyhow, won't solve my problem as when Mandrake 6 come out the web site says
it's coming out with kernel 2.2.7 - the proble gets worse.

Probably just forget sound for now, but there was a fair bit of talk about
the SBLive recently and i wondered if anyone else suffered the same problem.

Re: [newbie] RedHat 6.0 revisited

1999-05-12 Thread Martin White

Long post follows (sorry)...

Obviously this is off topic, but since you're asking, i just installed RH6
as a test system at work while i wait for Mandrake 6.

I did the same as you and had a look at Gnome, after logging out and logging
back in again this time specifying KDE it now remembers this as my users
default.

[Anyone not interesed in how this was done can stop here!!]...

I did make a change to the system however - the GDM xdm clone seemed to be
broken as far as XDMCP broadcasts were concerned (no 177 packets being sent
out), so i changed back to KDM (as this is what i know and love) and XDMCP
started working. It was after this change that i noticed that my default
window manager was remembered.

To make the change, there is a symbolic link in '/etc/X11' which points
'prefdm' to '../../usr/bin/gdm' rename this out of the way and create a
symbolic link that points prefdm to '../../usr/bin/kdm'. Reboot the machine
(unfortunately just switching run levels didn't work), and all will be back,
but with KDM as your X login.

As someone else commented earlier, it's damn annoying that RH have not
installed KDE to /opt/bin like the rest of the world (or is it just me).
Haven't fully worked out the consequences of this yet...

Martin.

I just installed RedHat 6.0 on my system and I'm pretty impressed with it!
I can only imagine what Mandrake 6.0 will be like when released!! :)

I noticed some of you had tried RH6 and was wondering if you knew how to
change the "default" X Windows Manager when you use the XDM to log in?
The
default is Gnome, of course. I don't mind having to manually switch to
KDE,
but would like to know how to make it the default without having to go
through the extra "work". I've only looked at Gnome for a brief moment
(when I decided to see which X was "default") and it looks basically like
a
 "Gnome-ified" version of KDE.

 :) Hope someone can help.

 Thanks!

Buy a TNT2 Ultra instead...it is alot better. An it is definately
supported.

This is going to get a little off topic, so i apologise in advance:

What is it that's better about a TNT2 Ultra ?? (obviously i am open to
choice on which exact card i go for, but i'm building a no holds barred
system, so i don't want to buy a complete donkey!!)

I specifically wanted to run the UltraHLE emulator, which specifies that
best performance is gained using a Voodoo2/Banshee card which is what
influenced my choice of Voodoo3. Any ideas if it would would be any good
with a TNT2 Ultra and Glide wrappers instead of the recommended Voodoo2??.

Again apologies for the off topic content - replies direct to me welcome for
the sanity of the rest of the mailing list !!

[newbie] Voodoo3 support

Before i go and buy one, does anyone know if the
new 3DFX Voodoo 3 3000 AGP video card is supported under Linux (XFree86 in
particular) ??

My decision on going for this card is based on
Win98 gaming so i gues i'll buy one anyway, but it would be nice if i don't need
to trash my Linux system too (especially as the SBLive drivers are now
out).

Re: [newbie] Mounting SCSI ZIP

1999-04-16 Thread Martin White

[SNIP]
Now that I have my SCSI card and ZIP drive recognized on boot, how do I
 mount it?

I know that I can use hd for hardrives and fd for floppy drives, but what
is
a SCSI removable disk drive? Will the mounting automatically sense the
FAT16 partition on the ZIP and load VFAT?

[SNIP]

As per the other replies on the list, you must know which device your zip
disk is. If it is the only scsi drive in your system it will be /dev/sda4 if
it's the second, /dev/sdb4 and so on.

By far and away the easiest method to setting this up is to edit your fstab
file (found in /etc).

Add the following line (changing the partition and the mount point as
required):

/dev/sda4 /mnt/zipvfatuser,noauto 0 0

All the parameters are seperated by tabs (difficult to do in email). The
vfat allows you to use long filenames (case sensitive) if you wish and will
mean your zip disks are readable as a Win95/98 Fat32 disk, but can also
happily be read in Linux.

The user, noauto means any user can mount/unmount the disks, the noauto means
don't try to mount any present disk on bootup (simply remove if you'd rather
this did happen).

Once you've added this line (as root), you can simply type at the command
prompt 'mount /mnt/zip' - the system will look into /etc/fstab to find out
what to do so you don't need to tell it every time.

Of course as this is a Mandrake list, what you should really do is to add an
icon on your desktop, but thats really straightforward and this emails
getting long, so if you want to do that and don't know how send another
post

Regards,
Martin.

Is your SCSI card an Adaptec 1520b?
I am having problems getting mine to work, when it asks me if I have any
SCSI cards, I say yes, then autoprobe, then it tells me it cannot find
it..
 Any tips?
[SNIP]

Well, i don't think my card was a 1520b, but then again i beleive the only
difference between the 1520 and the 1520b was the addition of the scsi
floppy interface, so my details should work.

You can try several things. The easiest is to select 'specify options' and
when prompted the parameter is (all on one line):

'aha152x=0xI/O,IRQ,ID OF HOST,1' (don't remember what the 1 stood for !!).
In my case the line was 'aha152x=0x340,10,7,1'. I seem to think that this is
not a particularly unusual setup.

Another way which SHOULD work is to add this to the boot prompt and things
should then auto detect, but i can't remember exactly what the syntax is for
this - something like 'linux append='aha152x,0x340,10,7,1' '. If this way
works for you then you must put the append= part into your lilo.conf and
rerun lilo after installation.

Try the first method, it'll probably be far easier.

Martin.

PS: I'll CC this to the mailing list as it doesn't sound like you are the
only person experiencing problems here.

There was some news about a Linux driver for SBLive. Creative hired a
linux
hacker to do it but so far no working driver yet. Not even beta. So I
guess
we'll have to wait. I'm in the same boat in this regard.
[SNIP]

This is not good news - although the fact that someone seems to know what is
going on is sort of good news !!

Where would i look to try and keep up to date with progress on this one ?.
I'm not really using Linux much at the moment (i tend to go backwards and
forwards between Win98 and Mandrake), but i don't want to rule out going
back to it when my mood takes me just because of no support for my sound
card.

However, if you have the other SB cards (The PCI, Ensoniq chip, AWE32/64,
16
etc) they should all work with no problems. The only part that seems to
have
 problems is MIDI.

 Regards,

I certainly do. Until i sell on my PC and finish building my new one i have
an old Awe64 which was working happily for my purposes (and to be honest i
thought it sounded better in Linux than Win98 ?!?). Is there likely to be
any issues with having both running in the PC at the same time, or should i
just forget about sound for the moment - i only really use it to listen to
CD's under Linux. Win98's a different matter tho.

Absolutely - unless the situations changed and someone has written some
Linux drivers, the modem relies on Windows to take on some of the
functionality of the modem.

The answer to the question has therefore always been - no, it won't work -

I'm using the new Outlook 5 at work (comes with IE5) and can't find the

Anybody else noticed this and if so any idea where the option has gone (i'm

Till then please excuse any posts i may make !!

Re: [newbie] ext2 filesystem

I would agree with everyone else that an hour and a half seems
a bit excessive, but things can take a VERY long time if you tick the option to
check for bad blocks during format (which incidentally i would recommend the
first time you create an EXT2 partition).

I would also agree that just retrying it should do the
trick.

As for the directory situation, yes, everything will be
created for you.
