[newbie] security - should I be worried? [Your internal IP should be hidden]
Hello, someone sent me this site http://www.auditmypc.com/ so I thought I'd have a look; I did the first firewall test and they said: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Notice! What's the difference between an internal and an external IP? And anyhow, I thought I had set my IP to 192.168.0.20??? [newbie] how to edit modules.conf - permission problem...
Hello, I'm running 10.0, having recently upgraded from 9.0. I'm trying to get my USB card reader to work, and I went to the Apacer site and they say to edit my modules.conf file. But when I try to save the edited file it complains I don't have permission. So I'm guessing I need to be root to do it; but now that I'm on 10.0 I can't log in as root any more. It only gives me two choices [the two usernames I set up] at login time. In 9.0 I could just type in root in the login field and the password; it would warn me something about running graphics as root [can't remember exactly] but it would let me in anyhow. But now I can't - there's nowhere to type! I can open a text window and SU, but then edit modules.conf only gives me: bash: edit: command not found help??? :) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? The first thing was the CD wouldn't boot, so I made a boot floppy and it would only get half way through before crashing, so I burnt a CD from the boot.iso image and that one worked. It detected everything except my modem, I had to go in and tell it where it was connected. And then [after I found my login and password details for my ISP] it wouldn't browse or get email. I had to go back and reset the static address for my LAN to get that working again. Weird, isn't it - I'm still scratching my head over that one. What's the lan got to do with the modem??? Oh, and I had to go back and reinstall Mozilla and Evolution from the CDs - and delete and re-create the desktop shortcuts: the old ones didn't work. Mozilla loads flash pages out of the box, but no java. I'll have to look into that later... All in all, not too bad - the new fonts look better, I *think* it seems a little faster, most things are where I expect them. Is there a good reason that you want to upgrade?? Unsupported hardware or some such? I don't know much about 9.0, I went from 8.2 to 9.1 (not an upgrade--fresh install). I've since upgraded a couple of machines from 9.1 to 9.2, but I don't see much difference, except that I had to apply some fixes to get stuff that worked perfectly in 9.1 to work in 9.2. At least the upgrade didn't really break anything badly, and was actually smooth--for an upgrade. I still haven't moved any of my machines to 10.x because I have older hardware and there just isn't any point to it. On the other hand, you can consider it a chance to learn some more about Linux 8). Worrying comments, Erylon. I was advised to upgrade because my system is now quite old and most of the advice-givers here have newer systems, so when they tell me do do something that works on their system, it won't work on mine. I'm currently dual booting with WIN2KPRO, and I don't want to mess up that partition, or mess with the LILO setup as it is. If I just put the CD in and boot, will it notice what's already there and put itself over the top of the old 9.0 install, or will I have to make sure it doesn't stomp on anything that it shouldn't? What kind of backup should I do first, just in case anything goes wrong? I'm guessing, simply copy anything that's in /home/merlin, but where else are things kept that I need to back up? What about Mozilla, Pan and Evolution - where do they keep their files? [...snip] There's a lot of ways of doing this the right way and a lot of opinions too:) Upgrading 9.0 - 10.0 will probably give a lot of trouble as they use very different kernels. I wouldn't advise it anyway, a clean install is the best way...that is, if you've got your /home on a separate partition. Doing a clean install whilst retaining your /home partition will have you lose previously installed 3rd party software which is usually installed in /usr. The way I prefer working is to set-up an new install on a new partition on its own without any creating any users and mounting the old /home partitions in a later stage..which has some pitfalls too, as always:) Installing 10.0 left me with an XP that wouldn't boot normally (it will in safemode though and after that it's OK). It happens everytime after using diskdrake. No big deal for me - I only boot XP if I have to help out some poor stuck XP sod- but others might get a bit ruffled:) this is just the kind of thing that scares me - I need the win stuff for my music programs. Lilo has to be changed and will be, otherwise 10.0 can't be booted! To be really helpful we'd need to know what your partition setup is, so let's start with that, heh? How, exactly do I feed back my old bookmarks, passwords and history? btw while looking around for some clue I did find my old bookmarks in a plain html file in /home/merlin/.old_mozilla - and clicking on those links opens up those pages in Konqueror! So at least I can browse most places, except for any that require logging in. All my passwords are still somewhere in the old Mozilla settings - how do I get them back? What should I set it *to*? The same as when it's running WIN2K? Interestingly, since I ran that wizard, now it stalls for quite a long time on booting, when it hits the line bringing up ETH0, then it eventually says failed and [thankfully] continues booting. It never used to do that before. Well, according to your previous post, you are currently setup to use DHCP on your Linux machine. However, you don't have DHCP on your machine because the Windows software is using zeroconf to automatically provide an IP address. Run DrakConnect from the Mandrake Control Center. Choose the Wizard and let it autodetect. You should see a Lan connection -ethernet card(s) detected with a check box that should have an X in it. Choose Next. Uncheck the Automatic IP box and enter an IP address on that line. You can use a 10. address like 10.0.0.20 and enter 255.255.255.0 for the netmask. Enter something for the hostname, use whatever you like. I would leave the DNS Server and Gateway blank, as well as the zeroconf hostname. That should get your lan card working and then you only need to edit your /etc/hosts file and create an entry for your machines to connect to them. That should read: 10.0.0.20 machinename 10.0.0.21 machinename2 I left all the above quoted because it's been a while since I visited this problem - real life has been intervening... But I'm having another go at it: for those machine names above, what names do I use? The names they use under windoze? Or just make up two new names? The situation atm is: If I use autodetect in DrakConnect it stumbles at bootup, at the bringing up ETH0 line [as above] but the internet works. If I give it a static address - either the 192.168.0.20 one or the 10.0.0.20 one, then the two machines will ping ok but the internet doesn't work. Here is what's in /etc/hosts atm: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.0.20localhost.localdomain localhost I'm trying to make headway on the documentation you suggested; I installed the HOWTO rpm but it didn't install the exact docs you specified. There are some others that seem related, but so far I haven't come across something that deals with my problem - aside from ask your system administrator :) I get the feeling it would take years to wade through all these docs, and the answer is possibly in there - somewhere! How, then, am I connecting to the net now, without any need to load drivers? All I do is click on the link I put on my desktop which starts KPPP. Suggest you check out /etc/modules.conf for entries that might indicate what modem drivers you are using and how to rig those to load on boot rather than relying on the connect wizard to do it for you. here is that file: probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi alias eth0 8139too alias sound-slot-0 snd-via8233 probeall usb-interface usb-uhci alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394 above snd-via8233 snd-pcm-oss I don't see anything to do with the modem in there; the modem is an Aztech 56K external modem. I don't see any model numbers on it... You can also check the hardware list to get the modem type and then try to find someone that can tell you which lines to add to load the modem drivers automatically. Where is that list? If you really want to simplify matters, I would suggest buying an inexpensive router device. A nice idea, but unfortunately impossible atm. Then, you can let the router serve as DHCP and assign IP addresses to the machine that you hook up. If you don't have such a device, you are going to have to put some work into configuring the network such that LAN traffic and Internet traffic coexist peacefully. Here is what's in /etc/hosts atm: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.0.20localhost.localdomain localhost I would change this to something different. localhost is always 127.0.0.1 but you need to differentiate the traffic that will be sent over the local lan from machine to machine from localhost traffic that stays confined to a single machine. The 192 line should have something different from localhost, call linux machine steinway and the windows machine baldwin for example. I just tried to change it - I right-clicked and opened it with Kedit, made the change, but then I couldn't save it. It says unable to write to file. Do I have to use some special program to edit this file? And: should I have separate entries for both machines? For example: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.0.20desktop 192.168.0.10laptop Would that work? [...snip] From my perspective, either you spend money, or time and effort, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Point taken. Unfortunately as I said buying a router is not an option, that would require a trip to Bangkok [which takes pretty much all day] because there's not much in the way of computer shops around here, and especially not any that would be Linux aware. And knowing my luck I'd spend all day and the equivalent of a month's rent here on a router and for some reason it wouldn't work... Can you imagine trying to explain a problem that I don't really understand in broken Thai to some local kid who's never heard of Linux? [newbie] Help - I broke it!!! [was: unable to ping to/from windoze box]
Hi, First, I set both windoze boxes to static IP addresses, and verified they still talk to each other. The desktop refuses to shut down now, it just goes to blue screen and stays there. But I could care less about that atm, I can just hit the reset switch and boot into Linux and shut down cleanly from there. That's not the problem. The problem is I've killed my internet connection. I'm typing this in a net cafe, after setting up a new account and subscribing it to the list. [btw what's with the archives at mandrake.com only going up till Nov03?] I ran the drakeconnect wizard again, but it wouldn't let me NOT put in a DNS server or [the other one - I can't remember now] It complained that the DNS Server should be in the form n.n.n.n and suggested [IIRC] 186.192.0.3 and 186.192.0.2. I'm not sure of those numbers, I'm going from memory here. It was 7AM when I was trying to sort out what was going wrong and that's late, even for me... When I start KPPP it dials and connects to the ISP ok, but then nothing further happens. Evolution times out with unknown reason and all web pages return connection refused. I ran the wizard again and it had obliterated my dialup account - I had to go searching through boxes and boxes of bits of paper and receipts etc to find the original signup stuff from the ISP so I could re-enter the dialin numbers and username and password again. But still, the same symptoms, no matter what I tried. It seems like regardless of the state of the dialup, the network connection seems to want to take over. interruption I had a bunch more stuff typed but then there was a power failure here and I had to type it all again. I think you have enough to get the idea of the problem. I have no time left now; I'll try and find another net cafe in a few hours or so. In the meantime, any suggestions will be appreciated... -- Merlin Zener Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[...snip] That would be Gateway. You can always use 127.0.0.1 which is the IP address for localhost as the DNS. Gateways should NOT be required, IIRC. I have never used zeroconf to try to network machines together so I don't know how zeroconf sets a default DNS or Gateway since there is none. Localhost would be my guess, however. If you really want to go back to zeroconf and try to let the wizard's work things out, you can simply check the DHCP/Bootp/zeroconf checkbox and let tmdns generate an IP for you. Do you mean for me to do that in the dialup section, or the lan section? [...snip] I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you browse through some of the available Mandrake Linux documentation, understanding that there may be language difficulties. You may get lucky and find a similar howto that is in your native language. [newbie] unable to ping to/from my windoze box
Hi all, well I've been trying to get these two boxes [my Mandrake 9.0 desktop and my Thinkpad with WIN2KPRO] talking, and haven't been able to get Samba to do much of anything. I had an idea to try the basics, and surprise surprise, it's no wonder Samba is having trouble - the two boxes aren't even recognizing each other! I ran ipconfig on the windoze box and it said: autoconfiguration IP address: 169.254.5.217 so from a terminal window on the Mandrake box I typed: ping 169.254.5.217 and got: PING 169.254.5.217 (169.254.5.217) from 203.146.175.77 : 56(84) bytes of data. but then it just sat there and did nothing. So then I pinged 203.146.175.77 from the windoze box and it returned 4 lines of Destination host unreachable. Needless to say, these two boxes talk to each other just fine over the same bit of cable using the same internal LAN cards they both came with when they're both running windoze... What do I have to do in Linux to make the network work? [newbie] confused by Samba
Hi all, I'm having another go at trying to get my Mandrake desktop to talk to my WIN2K laptop. I tried a while back but gave up. I think I'm confusing the basic concepts here - I had the impression that I had to use Samba, but just now tonight I've just been reading some help pages and they seem to only talk about using Samba for windows users to log on to the Linux box. Am I trying to use the wrong tool for the job? I want to be able to see the files on the laptop, so I can do some editing etc while I'm away from home and then transfer my work to the Mandrake machine without first booting into windows to do the transfer. Even better would be if I could get it so I could run Dreamweaver on my Mandrake box [using Wine???] so I could edit the files right there on the laptop, and continue on next time I boot the laptop away from home again. My logic would seem to tell me that I have to have a username and password set up on the WIN2K box so I made one, but I can't find anywhere in Samba to specify the new username and password. I found a Wiki page on Samba basics which says WebMin and SWAT both have methods for dealing with this, and are easy enough to use that I won't cover them. Well that sounded encouraging, so I installed Webmin. After much stuffing around and seemingly downloading the same set of files 4 times I got Webmin running [don't ask me how...]. But in the Samba Share Manager page the only thing I can see that is relevant is the link Edit Samba users and passwords. But clicking on that only gives me the message No Samba users defined - without giving any hint as to how to define them. I did some more reading and googling without finding a helpful instruction page [man Samba doesn't help much, for example! LOL]. Before I go any further I thought I'd better check in with you guys - to get back to the question at the top of this email: am I using the wrong tool? Hi, I know I'm not the first to have problems with dependencies, but it's the first time for me and I've been unable to find a page that tells me actually what to do in this case. [newbie] adding a new HDD to a dual boot system
Hi, I found an 80G HDD that I'd forgotten I'd brought over here with me in my luggage; I'd like to add it to my existing dual boot Mandrake 9.0 and WIN2KPRO system. So I was thinking, if I connect it as slave on the first IDE channel and then boot into windoze to copy the files on it to CDR before re-formatting it as FAT32, will Linux then find it on the next reboot? Or will the dual boot software spit the dummy when it sees a new hard drive it doesn't know about? Is there any possibility of screwing something up? [ie: losing files, making my system unbootable, etc...?] AND Can someone point me to a document or URL that explains in simple terms how Linux names drives/partitions and how to find out the relationship between the partitions and the naming scheme? For example, if I look at my HDD in Konquerer, I see a bunch of directories but no way to see the partitions [aside from /mnt/cdrom]. But when Googling I found somewhere that told me to type ls /dev/hd*, which gives me this: [EMAIL PROTECTED] merlin]# ls /dev/hd* /dev/hda@ /dev/hda2@ /dev/hda6@ /dev/hda8@ /dev/hdd@ /dev/hda1@ /dev/hda5@ /dev/hda7@ /dev/hda9@ How do I find out what directory is on what partition, and how much space is available on each? And when I add the new HDD [which I want to use for video editing files and MP3s etc] is it possible or advisable to move existing partitions or directories to it? [newbie] mailwasher style filter/spam stopper for Evolution?
Hi, I had a look at Spamassassin but AFAICT it filters on messages already downloaded. I just finished downloading today's email, and aside from list mail which I have going to their individual folders, my inbox had 82 messages in it, and only 4 of them were not spam and/or viruses. When I was using Outlook on WIN2K, I had Mailwasher going, which I liked because I liked the idea of bounce messages going to the sender of any messages I marked as spam. Not that I think the spammers take a blind bit of notice... Is there something I can use to look at the headers and delete/bounce them before I get them from my POP server? Something automated like the Bayesian idea would be nice :) TIA -- Merlin Zener Piano, Synthesizer Thailand. registered Linux user number 328618 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? As well as how to find intelligible answer from those so beloved data sources. RTFM and STFW are about as helpful from one that has knowledge as; My monitor doesn't have a picture, just a few lines of text, why? from a newbie. I for one am not averse to a little hand holding since that level of patience was once extended to me by someone knowledgeable that had apparently reasoned the situation out as I do now. YMMV Hi Charlie. I emailed you offlist to apologize but it bounced; I hope you don't mind me taking this opportunity to do it publicly. [for those that missed it, or came in late, I sent a rather hasty reply to one of Charlie's answers - I wasn't pi**ed off as I wrote it, but on re-reading it in the archives I could easily see how it could have been taken that way.] So, sorry once again Charlie. In my case, I've had Mandrake on this machine for a while [and I wouldn't have been able to get it installed without this list] but I haven't actually tried to do anything with it until recently. I got connected using Linux [again, with help from this list] a few weeks back, but when I really think about the actual amount of contact time in front of the computer I think it would really only total about 30 hours tops. So maybe I'm impatient and possibly have unrealistic expectations. Typical newbie? Maybe it all comes down to expectations. The newbie just expects the basics to be the same and is caught out when they're not. Kind of like moving to a different country [as I've done several times] - it's not the things you get told about that catch you out - it's the little things you don't expect that get you. [F1 doesn't mean help, for example]. Maybe the helpful answerers expect things too. Someone suggested [I'm sorry, I don't know who - Evolution is acting up again: emails open up with blank windows - but that's a topic for another thread] that I try locate, but when I do, all I get is command not found. And man locate gets me No manual entry for locate. All I'm saying is, clearly the answerer in that case expected I would have locate installed already... And like whoever suggested the RUTE pdf - I got several page not found results before I finally found somewhere I successfully downloaded it from. At 660 pages it's going to take me quite a while to get through, and in the meantime what do I do about problems that I encounter day by day? I've just begun reading it, and really, I think it will take months to get through. Especially if I follow the advice in the introduction: Any system reference will require you to read it at least three times before you get a reasonable picture of what to do... For me, for now, at least, it's just the same as me trying to read anything more complicated than a menu board in Thai - first I've got to figure out the characters, then work out what the individual words mean, and only then try to work out the meaning of the sentence. I'd venture to point out that most windoze users have never heard of grep or urpmi or invoke or that there's a difference between l and |. I've just scanned quickly through the first couple of chapters and it seems to jump immediately into the command line stuff, like password management and wildcards and expressions and so on. I don't know how often the typical user would ever have to bother with such things, unless he/she is a programmer already. All I'm saying is, from the newbie's perspective, a lot of this stuff is hard work. And to truly understand it will take a LOT of time investment, which is something not everyone can afford. I wonder, is there a more basic guide available which would cover the real basics - in plain English - the essential things you need to know about what's different? Thanks to all those who give freely of their time and expertise on this list, and also, sorry once again to Charlie... :) -- Merlin Zener Piano, Synthesizer Thailand.
