It is sometimes *possible* to get these working under Linux, but it takes a great deal of hard work (as you've already discovered)! In the UK, high street electrical stores sell external modems for around £30 (probably even cheaper in the US - most things seem to be!) which will work fine under both Windows & Linux (the packaging might not even mention Linux, and the salespeople will probably never have heard of it!) - just take it out of the box, plug in both ends, reboot & both OSs should detect it automatically. Or, you could spend many hours, possibly even days, trying to get a winmodem to work. Time = money - but only you can work out whether it is worth spending several hours/days to save £30! It is very difficult to get a winmodem to work in linux(for me impossible). The best bet is to get a true modem and it will work in both windows and everything else. The difference is that a winmodem does not have its own controller and must be managed by your CPU which takes considerable time while a true moden has its own controller and relives the CPU to do other things. I doubt that you are screwing up at all windows has already done that for you. -- Regards; Hoyt Registered Linux user #363264 http://counter.li.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I have seen that sort of result through setting the wrong authentication process. Do you know which protocol your isp uses? If not, and if you can't get an internet connection on another computer to find out, try changing that setting and see if helps. Ted- Before you're going to get a response, the people on this list who can give you some help need some hints, such as: 1. The header says "Modem Problems", but the message talks about a sound card. In either case, we need to know which modem, which sound card, which CPU, how much RAM, what other stuff you've got installed on your system. It's OK to say that you're trying to dual boot Mandrake on top of Windows. 2. What version of Mandrake Linux are you installing? The tweaks change with the versions. 3. What have you tried so far? Your definition of "necessary" doesn't seem to agree with the Penguin's idea. Try reposting with more facts and symptoms. A little helpful advice. Post more information. You most likely have a winmodem. Most winmodems will NOT work with linux. They used a software based driver. They are pci. So if you have a pci modem. It is most likely a winmodem. And will NOT work. -Original Message- From: Mike [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, December 22, 2000 12:40 PM To: Mandrake Subject: [newbie] Modem problems :*( hi, ive just installed mandrake 7.1. my modem dont respond or anything what shall i do? thanks mike

When you restart your machine from a cold boot you should see a panel which shows serial and parallel device info. If you hit the pause key on your keyboard you should be able to halt the boot process so you can copy the data down. I want to know what your BIOS tells us about your serial and parallel ports - ok?. You may restart the boot process by tapping your space bar. Once again - what type of mouse do you have - serial or USB ? Try this and come back to us and we'll go from there Cheers John Ps - could you disable the html in your mailer makes it a bit hard for my old colour deficiant eyes... > > all the stuff I tried is no longer there for I reloaded Linux just a > few > min. ago. [newbie] Modem Problems :(
Hello all. My modem will not work no matter what I do. I have followed some of the suggestion that come through the list but none worked. I thought I would tell you all what the problem is and maybe somebody could come up with something. First about the modem: -- It is a 33.6 USRobotics Faxmodem, External. There are a lot of switches on the back of it and I am not sure what they are for. I am going to list in order what they are for. Maybe this will help figure out why it won't work in Linux. 1. UP - Data Terminal Ready normal Down - Data terminal ready override 2. UP - Verbal result codes Down - Numeric result codes 3. UP - Suppress results codes Down - Display results codes 4. UP - ECHO offline commands Down - No echo, offline commands 5. UP - Auto answer on the first ring, or higher if specified in NVRAM Down - Auto answer off 6. UP - Carrier detect normal Down - Carrier detect override 7. UP- Load NVRAM defaults Down - Load factory defaults 8. Up - Dumb mode Down - Smart mode That is all for the modem now on to the problem.. My modem is in COM4 but when I use kppp it tells me my modem is busy, not uncommon I see. when I switch the device to COM1 or ttyS0 it will say, Modem is ready then it stops on Initializing and goes no father. Even the query works when on ttyS0, not sure why. I did a /proc/pci and found out that my port is 0x1850 and the IRQ is 5. all the stuff I tried is no longer there for I reloaded Linux just a few min. ago. I was wondering if I should of picked modem on Networking during the install ? Well if you can think of anything or would like me to type out what a certain program told me let me know, I will do it as fast as I can. Thanks for you time in this matter for me. OH, I tried to reg. my Linux and the mail bounced. I guess I will try it again but do any of you know if there is something wrong at the Mandrake site? Next prob coming up :( Stephen

Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (pardon me, I misplaced your real name), How did you configure your voicemodem? Since yours and mine are very similar, I would expect your solution to work for me too. My modem is a 3Com / USRobotics, 56K, ISA (I forgot it was ISA, previously I wrongly stated it was PCI), PnP, and a faxmodem. "PnP aware o/s" was disabled in CMOS prior to any LinuxMandrake installs. Linux Mandrake's "isapnp" misdetects the modem's interrupt (the modem operates on COM2 in Windoze (no change in modem operating status or operation when going from motherboard CMOS PnP ON to OFF)). I went into the isapnp file to verify just what the errors related to, and I confirmed the boot errors I was getting were from this modem interrupt problem. Even under these conditions, using minitel I sent an ATDT to the modem and got a dial tone. I've never had need to change a PnP device over. If the card has to "be configured" when used as non-PnP then this is my problem, and it certainly makes sense in 20/20 hindsight. I also wondered if I needed to "setserial" in Linux. My new install of LinuxMandrake7.0 upgraded to 7.1 without incident. I skipped any modem configuration, and at this point I have not yet even put in the symbolic link for the modem. I'm at a clean starting place to do this right. By-the-way, webmaster, what are CNR and AMR slots? Is this a PCI modem? What did you do to configure it? I have a USRobotics / 3Com internal modem, 56K PCI PnP faxmodem to deal with. Last time I tried (LinuxMandrake 7.0) isapnp detected it's configuration wrong & stopped with error messages (including errors at boot). Before I got back to this I corrupted my LinuxMandrake install. I have reinstalled LM 7.0 and re-upgraded to 7.1 due to a problem with XFree86 which left the screen illegible. Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
External is safe but not necessary. There are internal modems (even PCI) which are full hardware modems. The problem is identifying them; most manufacturers don't say which models are Winmodems & which are not, even on their websites. For a few weeks now there has been a fellow from OK on eBay offering used USR Model 5610's at about $50 and claiming in all caps "not winmodem." Anyone who is really desperate is invited to make me an offer for my genuine Hayes Smartmodem 300. It's as external as they get, & predates Windows. - Original Message - From: "Jason Ashman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, September 04, 2000 3:44 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Modem Problems On Mon, 04 Sep 2000, you wrote: > winmodem???!??!???! > this is supposed to be linux bud > now windows wont allways identify a modem off of a port so this is where you > manually install it using the disket that came with that thing. use add hard > ware and specify what it is > > as far as linux goes your sh** out of luck! > winmodems are 100% compatible with windows and windose and did i mention > windose?? -- But, very few winmodems have linux drivers available. I suggest checking the manufacturer's website or any other Linux driver site and see if a driver is available. If not, fork up the bucks and get an external modem. I'd say that unless your internal modem has jumpers to configure the IRQ and IO adress, you will be out of luck ;-( Cheers, Ron the Frog, on the banks of the Paraguay River. -- A fanatic is a person who does what he knows God would do, were God apprised of all the facts of the case. --- http://personales.conexion.com.py/~rolgiati ---
Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
I bought a Best Data Modem, it said right on the box "Linux Compatible". I jumpered it to use tty2 and irq 4, works like a charm. Got it from CompUSA. They are out there and resrearching the hardware compatibility database can be a big help in finding what you want. Good Luck. winmodem???!??!???! this is supposed to be linux bud now windows wont allways identify a modem off of a port so this is where you manually install it using the disket that came with that thing. use add hard ware and specify what it is as far as linux goes your sh** out of luck! winmodems are 100% compatible with windows and windose and did i mention windose??

Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
I was fooling with the networking configurater and all of a sudden from having a perfect Kppp modem set up I started getting exactly as described below. So I went back in and took out all of the network config stuff and rebooted and voila! I have my connection back. My suggestion is to go into Drakconf and make sure all of the networking config is blank with the exception of your NIC card config. The "routing and gateway" try blank as well as anything else. I have'nt figured just how but somehow the loop back or something is trying to talk to itself. PPP0 can be configured too if you want. Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
I too have been battling a modem install under 7.1 all weekend. Tried all the timeout tricks on this list, tried the noauth option - still no go. In the end i had to download a program called qppp i think it was, and that did the trick once it was configured. But using either ppp under Linux conf, or gnome ppp, ( i installed from 2 cd iso set - maybe kppp does not come on that ? ) the ppp daemon died always. I think it seemed to be a problem with the PAP config, howver that seems to work fine under the program i downloaded. Any other battles like this ? Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
Hi Charles, Yes, my provider helpdesk says they do use PAP. Pls excuse unclear wording in my letter. As for trying each and any setting in all their combinations... well, I would prefer to know what I am doing and why, and my time is somehow limited... That's why I paid for "official" Mandrake hoping I would get some E-mail support. Oh yes. Besides, IMHO default configuration should work or at least be not too far from working one. And - yes, I do know about help button ;) in more than just one or two different systems... Didn't find right answer there but sure tried before asking Support (which didn't answer) and now asking this group. As well as did several web searches and found lot's of questions about the same problem but quite few real answers... My guess is that lot's of potential Linux users might be scared away and not asking/trying anymore after being unable even do this simple thing - connect to their Internet providers using default (or close to default) configuration and methods. Thanks for trying to help, anyway. Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
When I first started using Linux almost a year ago, like everyone else I tried using kppp. I found it generally frustrating and useless, especially trying to configure a PAP script thing that worked. I gave up on that. My only suggestion to others with kppp problems is: dump it and use wvdial. wvdial is easy to install and use. The program senses what kind of handshake your provider wants and keeps you connected. Since wvdial is not on the Mandrake cd's you will have to download an rpm version (I had to do this using Windows when I started with Mandrake). I forget the URL but a search at Google for "wvdial" will lead one to water. Now I have my computer configured to dial up when I boot Linux, and it works like a charm. Harry I might also help us to know what ISP you use. You can not simply take the word of the person you spoke to at your ISP that PAP is "acceptable". They either use the PAP protocol or they don't. 5 will get you 10 that if you tried each of the other settings as well as increasing the time-out value you Would find one that worked and from your log that is your problem. [newbie] Modem Problems
I have installed Mandrake Linux 7.1 for the first time. During installation it detected my external modem, and it did setup my internet connection. My problem is that when I login into kde desktop, and use kppp tool (there is a icon on the desktop which says Internet and it looks something like Windows dialup connection) to dial to internet I can’t connect. During connection process, there is a brief “handshaking” going on, and then my connection will drop and error appears “PPPD Demon Died Unexpectedly”. Anybody with any ideas ? [newbie] modem problems under 6.1
I am using a newcom 33.6ifxc modem, I set up the ppp connection and when I try to connect says modem is busy. Is my modem just not compatible under this software or do I need to edit a configuration file? __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
After reinstalling 6.1 the other day, I had the same problem-- modem busy. . Cause: I had forgotten to add #setserial /dev/modem uart 16550A port 0x6200 irq 11 as directed in my modem's user manual (Actiontec 56k PCI call waiting modem) to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
Hi, I just want to say that Winmodem are not supported by Linux and they will NEVER be supported. I read that in a HOWTO about configuring modems in Linux... Whatever, I don't suggest you to buy another modem, choose rather a faster connection. I did everything you guys said, now I have "modem busy" with Kppp. When I do a "uname -r", I get "2.2.5-15BOOT" When I do a "uname -m", I get "i686" when I cat /etc/mandrake-release I get "Linux Mandrake release 6.1 (Helios)" I have a Gateway pentium III 450 and windows98 and Linux and 64MB of RAM. and I changed the config.sys so to boot either from linux or windows by using "loadlin vmlinuz..." I just purchased an Actiontec modem that says it is good for dos, win 3.1, 95, nt and linux. I installed according to the instructions using kddp. When querying the modem I either receive that the modem cannot be found or its busy. I've reloaded linux twice so far. Anyone have any ideas. I'm at wits end. Thanks Jennifer

I am running Mandrake 6.0. I have tried repeatedly, but unsuccessfully to get my modem working. My modem is on Com4 under Windows, but I cannot find it under Linux. I try to find it on /dev/ttyS3. I do get a modem ready when I do a query, but there are no ATI commands. I have tried changing the CR/LF, but that doesn't work either. What should I try next. My modem is not a win modem. Thanks

In earlier kernels, there WAS a difference between the setups done for ttyS* and cua* devices. However, cua* devices have been deprecated by the 2.2.x line of kernels -- check your logs when using them, you'll see warnings that list the application that is using the device. Use setserial like this and you should be up and running: setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 9 IRQ 2 cascades to IRQ 9, so that's what you need to tell it to use. Once you get it running, just add the setserial line to the end of your /etc/rc.d/rc.local and it'll be run automatically each time you boot. -- Steve Philp Network Administrator Advance Packaging Corp. [newbie] Modem problems. Looks like a bug in Mandrake 6.0
When I install Linux-Mandrake, I set up the modem first under KPPP. The device is set to ttyS1. Then I set up the rest of my PPP seatings. I then am able to successfully dial my ISP. The modem (sportster 56K internal) works GREAT! The next step in setting up mandrake is setting up the sound. So I type /usr/sbin/sndconfig and the system automatically detects my sound card and sets it up. Then it says that the file /etc/conf.modules already exists and backs it up as /etc/conf.modules.bak. That's it. My PnP SB16 sound card is setup and works GREAT. Now the modem doesn't work after setting up the sound card. I keep getting "modem is busy" and I can't dial out. The sound card and the modem DO NOT share the same resources. I did not EVER have this problem in Mandrake 5.3. I deleted /etc/conf.modules and replaced it with /etc/conf.modules.bak and renamed it accordingly. The modem still don't work. Even after rebooting. What do I need to do to fix this mess? Postman

Looking at man setserial gives us an answer. Using setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 10 should do it. Then try setserial /dev/ttyS2 and you should see that it shows irq 10. Then try kppp again using /dev/ttyS2 as the modem device. If it works, you can add the line setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 10 to /etc/rc.local or create a new file called /etc/rc.serial and put it there so it runs at startup every time. If you create rc.serial, make certain that the file permission are the same as rc.local. Hoyt application/ms-tnef

Hoyt

I had to set the jumpers on the modem for com 2 irq 3 to get linux to use it. Now Winblows 95 wont install it on COM 2. So change the jumpers to COM2 IRQ3 and set kppp to use /dev/ttys1 and you should be okay.
