[newbie] Xine: Error reading NAV packet.

2004-06-22 Thread Cezary Morga
Finaly I've got my hands on Monty Python's Holly Grail special double DVD
edition. I put the first disc in my DVD player. Run xine... and I've got
'Error reading NAV packet'...
I've checked log :
audio_decoder: error, unknown buffer type: 0400
audio_decoder: error, unknown buffer type: 0200
the rest seems to be all right. all the plugins are found etc...
Does anyone knows what might be the problem or any other good dvd player for
linux which can handle dvd menus (unfortunatelly mplayer can't)?

Ok. I've found what was the problem. I was lacking the libdvdcss2 libraries...
If anyone will experience the same problem check if you have it installed :)

2004-03-08 Thread Robert Beach
I have a Tyan Motherboard
640 megs of ram

GForce 4 Ti 4400 AGP
Running Mandrake 9.2

I am basically looking for a good source for Xine and the plugins and stuff
I need for playing DVD's. I have gone to over a dozen different sites and
downloaded numerous different versions of Xine, CSS, dvdnav, etc and not
quite sure which ones I'm suspose to use. If I could be pointed to a
website or websites that has the correct files for me to get or confirm that
I already have I think I could get it to work no problem.
Please and Thankyou

Go to urpmi.org/easyurpmi to set out a source for plf. Uninstall the
current set of xine files, and reinstall, checking that plf is in the
name of each one and that the version numbers match as a set.

Hi, LeaAnne. How about adding that link to the community twiki newbie
page? In case you haven't been there it's at

http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/NewbieFriendly

In order to edit you first have to register as a user, then you can
simply open the page for edit, put in your url with a few words of
description, you will be given a preview, from which you can return
to edit if you are not satisfied, then save. That's all there is to

HarM - just an off-chance. When I had a similar problem under 9.0 it was
because I had a plugin directory in the path, but not the subdirectory of it

Well, I've just found out that my dvd player can't read the dvd's anymore.
Meaning what? I don't know...there's a /dev/dvd link allright. Manually trying
to mount it just gives me the read error no medium found.

So it's hardware recognition specific, I guess.
Looks like I'll have to rumage around a little more but first I'll try an

I tried and tried and finally gave up on Xine with DVD's. I use Mplayer now,
it works much better, has an easier configuration and seems to pick up DVD
navigation much better than Xine. You might want to try it, it comes with

you have MTRR support and there are some ranges set.
[ good ] found the player at /usr/bin/xine
[ hint ] multiple xine executables found in your PATH
I have found more than one occurance of 'xine' in your PATH:
 /usr//bin/xine
 /usr/bin/xine
You have probably installed xine-ui more than once, or the directory
where you have installed xine occurs more than once in your PATH.
Technically, this is not really a problem, but it's probably
somewhat confusing, as it's not obvious, which xine you're using.
You should probably uninstall the copies that you don't use...
Further tests assume, you're using /usr//bin/xine

[OUCH!!] no xine-config on this machine.
This means that xine-lib is either not installed
or it is installed in a very unusual place.
So you should probably install xine-lib before running xine-check...

[ hint ] unable to determine plugin directory
I could not determine your plugin directory. That would be much
easier
if you had xine-config installed (see message above)...
Note that I could not check your xine plugins.

[ good ] /dev/cdrom points to /dev/cdroms/../ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd
[ good ] /dev/dvd points to /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd
[ hint ] DMA is disabled for your DVD interface.
This will probably result in a serious performance hit when
playing DVDs. You can issue the command
 hdparm -d1 /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd
as root to enable DMA. It would be wise to add this command to
some script that is executed executed at boot time.
Note that you probably have to set the DMA mode for your drive as
well.
Most DVD-ROMs work fine with multiword DMA mode 2. You can use
 hdparm -d1 -X34 /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd
(as root again) to set this mode. Maybe UDMA2 will give you even
better
performance, but it only works well with some controllers. You'll
probably need UDMA capable IDE cables for this mode. If you want
to try: make backups of your important data and type (as root again)

I think that's just the version of the VCD specifications.

FYI:
*ver 1.0: Karaoke CD specification, MPEG-1 data in tracks
*ver 1.1: Video CD: as 1.0 but chapter marks and multi-volume album
facilities added
*ver 2.0: Video CD: addition of stills, generic menus, playlists, closed
caption text.

Xine should have no problems viewing it.

I've recently burnt my own VCDs using Nero on Windows, it does them as
VCD2.0, both a DVD player and Windows media player played it so Xine
shouldn't have any problems at all! Tho I haven't tested it using Xine, I'll
give it a go when I get home tonight.

I didn't get far with this, either. I downloaded it, tried to ./configure,
but got

checking for xine-config... no
checking for XINE-LIB version = 1.0.0... no
*** The xine-config script installed by XINE could not be found

configure: error: *** We need to find xine-lib 1.0.0 installed ***

I think the plf rpm does things a bit idiosyncratically. xine-check
complained that it couldn't find config. There used to be one with the old
Mandrake setup, 0.9.13, but the 0.9.17 from plf just has config2, and the
directory structure seems to be different. I can't find xine-lib, so maybe
it isn't installed. Anyway, it looks as though I'm in deep water, and nice
as it would be, I have to wonder if it's worth it.

Re run ldconfig -v and xine-check.

xine-check is unaltered, but there are clues, I think, in the ldconfg output:

ldconfig: Path `/usr/lib' given more than once

then a whole list of links

/usr/lib:
ldconfig: Cannot stat /usr/lib/libgtkodbcconfig.so: No such file or directory
ldconfig: Cannot stat /usr/lib/libodbcinstQ.so: No such file or directory

then more links

 xine-win32 1-0.beta2.1plf
 xine-ui 0.9.17-1mdk
 libxine1 1-0.beta2.1plf

But I think that a fresh install is a better way for you. Before doing
 this, remember:
If you haven't just forgotten to install a recent xine-lib (or xine-ui)
then you probably have upgraded from an older version and some of the
old files are still around, being in the way. Maybe it's even just
 some bad leftover symlinks.

This can happen if you install from source or use a packaging
system that doesn't clean up previous installations thoroughly
 enough.

Remove all older xine libraries manually (rm $prefix/lib/libxine*.
and while you're at it, throw away any old plugins in
$prefix/lib/xine/plugins/ as well, just to be safe.) Then install
xine-lib and xine-ui again. This should fix the problem.

   file:/usr/share/doc/xine-ui-0.9.17/FAQ_en

I think it's probably a good idea to start again. I'll print out your post
and use it as a check that I've removed everything possible before
re-starting the install.

Meanwhile, one last question before I do this. Am I right in simply avoiding
anything with the 0.9.13 numbering and taking everything else? Is there
anything else I should avoid?

Thanks for your time and patience

For a DVD bought here in the UK xine reports maybe region 2. It appears
to get that information from the Region mask on the DVD.

Well I ask because xine appears to set that manually in the config

mine would not of worked for that reason. However be that as it may it

I think it's just the dvdnav problem I have to solve now.

Anne,

I've tried several different DVDs, none of which work. The problem I'm
having is that when I run Xine, I don't even have the option of playing
a DVD (on the GUI), just a VCD and a DVB (whatever that is). When I
install the dvdnav package, I have the option of playing a DVD, but all
it does is just open the DVD menu, all garbled and mangled, and refuses
to play any of them.

Doesn't sound as if you've actually progressed from where you started? g I
didn't have the dvd button when I had the old (mixed) install. After the
latest clean install I have that, and as I said it plays some of my disks.

Hey Anne,

Thanks for the reply. No, I don't mind an off-list post whatsoever, and

Haviong got so far, I'm hoping Pilaga is going to give me a command/line

I don't know about you Anne, but when I installed Ogle, I had to
download the Red Hat RPMs from Ogle's website. The plf ones wouldn't
work after I installed them. It would just crash every time I tried to
play a DVD. I also had problems with dependencies as well. It kept
telling me that I needed to install libdvdcss (even though I had the
libdvdcss2 RPM from plf like you). All I did was install the pkgs with
the --nodeps switch, and it works just fine.

Hope that helps somewhat,

Thanks Terry, but I'll not bother. Here's the latest -

I have played a little of every dvd I have, both the old and the new, except
for a pair of Chinese Tourist Board disks that are totally unencrypted, I
think. For them I get 'no plugin available for dvd:/'.

Apart from that - some disks take a long time to sort themselves out. Some
appear to stick on the copyright notice - I had thought they would not play,
but if you select 'play the next scene' they will continue and all is well.

All in all, I'm well pleased - though I would like those wonderful Chinese
ones.

My setup is Mandrake 8.2 with Mandrake and PLF sources for xine, and
that works. If you have xine-dvdnav installed from the Mandrake CDs
you could try xine -pq -s DVD dvdnav:// from the command line. (The

kind of clue about the medium you are accessing. That is where MRLs
come in - Media Resource Locator(?). The gui does have a
comprehensive setup panel but as far as I can see does not provide an
option for specifying DVD play by default - dvb and vcd must be built
in defaults. I always attach the above command to a GNOME panel icon.
Maybe you can do the same in KDE or modify a menu entry. You probably
don't need to uninstall anything either.

 Does that help?

I got 'xine engine error
There is no input plugin available to handle dvdnav://
Maybe MRL sybtax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist'

Sounds like a config problem, but I haven't a clue what to do about it. Silly

Anne: As user (not root) run 'xine-check'.

I came to the conclusion that I had a mixed installation, 0.9.13 and 0.9.17,
so I asked for uninstallation of xine, and started installer again. It
appeared that I could only have dvd-nav with 0.9.17, so I carefully left out
all the 0.9.13 files and re-installed. I now have a dvd button. Starting
xine gives me the copyright warning, and lists the first track, but doesn't
play any further.

I ran the command you gave, but it suggests that I still have parts of the old
version there. Perhaps that's what's causing the problem. Anyway, here is
the output (I left out the first few lines that don't help much - they were
all OK). I do hope you can advise me.

you have MTRR support and there are some ranges set.

If you want
to try: make backups of your important data and type (as root again)
 sync
 hdparm -d1 -X66 /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd
If your System still works fine after this, you probably want to keep
these settings (add them to some boot script).
If your system hangs or behaves very strangely after a few minutes,
you
should reboot immediately and never use this setting again on this
 machine. Good luck ;-)

[ good ] found xvinfo: X-Video Extension version 2.2
[ good ] your Xv extension supports YUV overlays (improves MPEG performance)
[ good ] your Xv extension supports packed YUV overlays
[ good ] Xv ports: YUY2 YV12 I420 UYVY

2003-01-20 Thread Terry Sheltra
I ran that on my machine to see what would happen, and I got the following:

[OUCH!!] no plugin directory (/usr/local/lib/xine/plugins/1.0.0)
The plugin-directory doesn't exist. xine-config claims that there
is a plugin directory at /usr/local/lib/xine/plugins/1.0.0.
However, there is no such directory.
You probably need to reinstall xine-lib.
press enter to continue...

I did some snooping, and found that the RPMs installed the plugins into
/usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.0.0 .. What do I need to change to get Xine to
see that my plugins are in a different place?

Thanks!

... But if we laugh with derision, we will never understand. Human
intellectual capacity has not altered for thousands of years so far as
we can tell. If intelligent people invested intense energy in issues
that now seem foolish to us, then the failure lies in our understanding
of their world, not in their distorted perceptions. Even the standard
example of ancient nonsense -- the debate about angels on pinheads --
makes sense once you realize that theologians were not discussing
whether five or eighteen would fit, but whether a pin could house a
finite or an infinite number.

Anne, check your /etc/ld.so.conf This is mine:
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/lib/qt3/lib
/usr/lib/wine
/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib/

Re run ldconfig -v and xine-check.

This are the files that I have installed (+ decss)
xine_dmd_plugin1.0.7-1plf
xine-dvdnav1-0.beta2.1plf
xine-plugins1-0.beta2.1plf
xine-win32 1-0.beta2.1plf
xine-ui 0.9.17-1mdk
libxine1 1-0.beta2.1plf

But I think that a fresh install is a better way for you. Before doing this,
remember:
If you haven't just forgotten to install a recent xine-lib (or xine-ui)
then you probably have upgraded from an older version and some of the
old files are still around, being in the way. Maybe it's even just some
  bad leftover symlinks.

This can happen if you install from source or use a packaging
system that doesn't clean up previous installations thoroughly enough.

Remove all older xine libraries manually (rm $prefix/lib/libxine*.
and while you're at it, throw away any old plugins in
$prefix/lib/xine/plugins/ as well, just to be safe.) Then install
xine-lib and xine-ui again. This should fix the problem.

For a DVD bought here in the UK xine reports maybe region 2. It appears

[newbie] Xine

2003-01-19 Thread Anne Wilson
I just downloaded all the xine rpms I could get from plf.zarb.org. Then I
tried xine. I seemto have installed a new copy of the ui, and this one only
offers dvb and vcd - no dvd, so now I can't play anything. Do I need to
uninstall everything I have on xine and start again from the install discs?
If so, how can I avoid selecting the one that does the damage, since the plf
packages will be listed amongs the mdk ones?

My setup is Mandrake 8.2 with Mandrake and PLF sources for xine, and
that works. If you have xine-dvdnav installed from the Mandrake CDs
you could try xine -pq -s DVD dvdnav:// from the command line. (The
-pq is optional.) Since xine is a multimedia player it needs some
kind of clue about the medium you are accessing.

[newbie] Xine/Kxine?

2003-01-18 Thread Angus Auld
Greetings, I wonder if someone could explain to me just
exactly what Kxine is? I know that it says in the description
that it is a graphic frontend for Xine to integrate into KDE.
I already had an entry in my KDE menu for Xine, so what
does Kxine do that Xine can't, in relation to KDE?

I installed Kxine, and now I have Xine and Kxine in my menu :-/
I tried to gain understanding from Kxine's Handbook, but the writers
are obviously practical jokers or something. (eg. Kxine is an application
specially designed to do nothing you would ever want. from Kxine
Handbook pg. 1)

Any further enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.
Enquiring minds want to know ;-)

TIA.

[newbie] Xine plugin

2002-10-02 Thread David Seuferer

Hello,
I'm trying to find the mov plug in for xine, but can't find it
anywhere.
I've looked at sourceforge, but can't figure out which of the many
files
is the mov plug in. Any help would be appreciated.

[newbie] Xine question...

2002-05-31 Thread darklord

I looked thru the archives, and on Xines' Sourcforge site, but couldn't find
the info I wanted... I did install all the plugins that came with Mandrake
8.2.

Is there a plugin for Xine that will allow it to do menu navigation like
Ogle? I did figure out how to use Nav to pick individual files) Also, on
some of my DVD's I get a no Xine plugin for Ts.vob or something like
that... Is there a plugin for that as well?

Thanks all!

PS Ogle works great here, on 99% of my DVD's but I wanted to get Xine fully
working so I could do a head 2 head comp. The DVD's that Ogle won't do here
are:

Legend of Hell House (sits forever, choppy video)
Ghostbusters (can't launch movie - but can play individual scenes)
Arrival 2 (Arrival 1 on the flip side works great - go figure)
Jackson County Jail (sits forever, can pick scenes but never starts them)

where are your xine skins installed? i've had a similar problem using MPlayer,
probably the skin is there but you have a permissions problem...

have you checked the skin's owner/permissions?
