ftp.kde.org/pub/../stable/3.0/..

 Inoltre:
 altre localizzazioni-i18n.
Sono proprio all'inizio e non so dove si trova suddetta directory. Dove
 recupero i files?

8.x
e noarch ossia in sorgenti, binari per particolari versioni
e oggetti che vanno sempre bene.

[newbie-it] problemi winmodem lucent

2002-04-09 Per discussione blackice

Ciao a tutta la ML,
ho installato da poco Mandrake 8.2. Ho un winmodem Lucent che con le
ultime
tramite i pacchetti ltmodem*.tar.gz. Ora ho provato a fare lo stesso
sotto
8.2 ma purtroppo (ho usato diverse versioni, dall'ultima 6.00c2 a
6.00b15 e
Ho allora provato tramie
wvdial a

If I choose to compile the src rpm file, rather than compile a tar ball,
which is likely to be best. Is there a question of installabillity , between

  cdrtools-1.11a20-1.src.rpm
  cdrtools-1.11a19-1.src.rpm

which I find do not install.I guess the src appendage means something
  that is incompatible with mandrake.

I guess I need something with mdk in the file name , and is at least
designated as being in the cooker, but I cannot find one.Obviously I
am looking in the wrong place. The URL address would be helpfull.

  John

src means it's not compiled. it's the source. if you install
a src RPM, then you have to cd into it's directory and compile it.
anyway, if this is the case, i suggest downloading a tar.gz for source.
i think it's less confising that way.

i remember compiling cdrtools a while ago.. you probably won't find any
 problems.

I did not know about src at all.
 Two further questions,

If I choose to compile a tar ball, can I turn the compiled file into an rpm
 file, and if so how,

If I choose to compile the src rpm file, rather than compile a tar ball,
which is likely to be best. Is there a question of installabillity , between
one computer over another computer, assuming they both have the same
 base OS.

In otherwords are there pros and cons between either route.

 John

yes, you can build RPM files, but i've never done it and i'm afraid
i don't know anything about it :o(

if you are planning to run cdrtools on two different machines, i'd
suggest compiling the source separatedly for both of them.
anyway, if the two computers are alike, ( processor, OS, devices )
it should be fine

That's a hardware 'feature' (or rather, the lack of a feature). Are you
using
sound that is integrated onto your motherboard? Most of these setups do
not
include a built-in amplifier, unlike many standalone sound cards. Another
possibility is that your speakers are simply too power-hungry for the
built-in
 amplifier to satisfy.

[newbie] NVIDIA RPMs

I am having a heck of a time trying to get the new Nvidia RPMs for Mdk8.2

How do I check to see that the driver is installed and the video card is

I have to get it working so my kids will stop bugging me about the TuxRacer

Yes it does a whole bunch in a dir at once, stick the single md5sum as one

 :) I love it.

Femme,

Thanks again.

Now I see what md5summer can do -- it's interesting and helpful under
some circumstances, but is not quite what I was looking for (under
Windows). md5summer can calculate the md5sums for every file in a
directory or on a disk (and save them to a file), but cannot (AFAICT)
calculate one master md5sum for an entire burnt cdrom. (As I can do
under Linux using something like md5sum /dev/cdrom.)

I guess what I could do is run md5summer on all the files on a cdrom,
store the results in a file, then run md5sum(mer) on the resulting
file. Presumably I could find software to do the same thing in Linux
(because part of what I want is a Linux / Windows independent way of
generating an md5sum for a burnt cdrom. (In other words, a calculation
that can be performed in Windows or in Linux and develop the same
result.)

Randy Kramer

Most of you have heard of M$ and Unisys' $28 million

the site was started ( http://www.wehavethewayout.com/ )
it ran on FreeBSD? Morons. Good material for parody sites,

2002-04-09 Per discussione Dan LaBine

Tommy; When you log out, you're returned to the Login Applet. Below the
dialog
box where your password goes, there's a drop-down box labelled Session
Type.
Select the desktop manager that you want to use, and log in with it. You
MUST select
the desktop manager AFTER you've entered your username and password, or it
will
revert to the previous manager. Once you've successfully logged-in with the
new desktop
manager, that will now become your default manager until you change it
again.

By the way,...I haven't received those files yet.

 Hi,

Can any of you tell me what the command is to change your default window
manager? Please don't tell me to modify any files. I know there is a
command I've used before, but can't remember what it is... Someone said
to
try switchdesk, but that doesn't work on my mdk 8.1 box... Thanks!

Randy,

Now I see what md5summer can do -- it's interesting and helpful under
some circumstances, but is not quite what I was looking for (under
Windows). md5summer can calculate the md5sums for every file in a
directory or on a disk (and save them to a file), but cannot (AFAICT)
calculate one master md5sum for an entire burnt cdrom. (As I can do
under Linux using something like md5sum /dev/cdrom.)

Just a guess, but how about making an ISO image of the cd and run
md5summer on the ISO file?

 Hi,

I can recommend Postfix - its supposed to be a fairly secure mailserver -
its imho easy to setup (only 1 main config file - well documented)
and for me it works well.

i like kpilot a lot, but it doesn't have usb yet.

actually now that i type that, it may now that kde3 is out. not sure.

Error, it has. That was the way I reached the palm m505 sync via usb in
a equipment runing Mandrake 8.2:

(pilot-link-0.10.99.tar.gz); tar zxvf pilot-link..; cd pilot-link;
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr/extra/pilot-head --with-perl5=no
--with-python=no
make, make install.
After the make, you can test if run: insmod visor; ln -s /dev/usb/tts/0
/dev/pilot; pilot-xfer /dev/pilot -l (It was wonderfull hear the
sync
music).

B) download the last jpilot tarball from http://www.jpilot.org
(jpilot-0.99.2.tar.gz); remember the rpm from mandrake is not valid
because you
need special compilations options.
tar zxvf jpilot.

./configure --disable-nls --disable-pl-test --prefix=/usr
--with-pilot-prefix=/usr/extra/pilot-head --with-ccoptions=-Wall -O2
make
make install

And for me jpilot have done a perfect sync using the usb port!!!

But when it has to be compiled, for any reason, I really prefer the

yes, you can build RPM files, but i've never done it and i'm afraid

Basically, they contain additional programs that can be installed with

commercial software (mostly demos, IIUC).

Sometime during the installation you should have been asked if you had
those additional CDs. You would then have had the opportunity to choose
programs from those disks to be installed (during the normal
installation package selection process).

If you find programs on those disks that you want to install, you can
still install them now using, for example, rpm.

On the SiS 630 Chipset--well take a look at

http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=2050mode=threadorder=0thold=0lang=en

The main article solves the 735, and a subsequent reply speaks to the
630. Both of those chipsets have linux drivers written and GPLed by SiS
but they are masked under other names in the driver library because they
are so similar to other products (The 7018 looks like a trident, and the
7012 looks like an i810 Audio), and this particular generation of ALSA
drivers doesn't seem to work, but the OSS drivers do.

So it is a minor tweak. Yes, not as convenient as Windows but at least
out in the open where something can be done.

I suspect that the iso (and it's md5sum) may vary depending on which

If you (or anyone else) downloads and burns isos and can collect some

Well, there are lots of application programs and a lot of choices on
those other two disks. They may not be useful to you, but then again
they might.

Here are some of the things you probably didn't install:

You got KDE and GNOME Desktop environments and IceWM-light as a
failsafe, but you probably did not install

blackbox
xfce
AfterSTEP
WindowMaker
Enlightenment
Fvwm

This will not affect the functionality of the system. Of course, you
will not see a background with water rippling at the bottom and
reflecting the things shown on the screen, but eyecandy is for those who
like it.

Now probably also you did not install the development system. So you
have Perl and Python, but not many other interpreters and compilers.

Last I looked, the Enterprise edition of Visual C++ was selling at about
$1000. You have equivalents in power with glade, KDevelop, kdestudio,
and gcc, but most of that is on CD2 and CD3.

Database systems that are extremely sophisticated are around. Some of
them will need to be installed to run effectively with Java which you
will need to download to make your browsers fully functional. unixODBC
works with Java. MySQL and postgresql are there.

There are many programs that are just convenience programs. There are
at least 7 editors you did not load, and DansGuardian or junkbuster to
take care of unwanted pop-up ads and pestiferous porno sites.

But mostly, you have a functional system. Just remember that Windows XP
is most of a CD and provides notepad and solitaire. We are three CDs so
we offer a lot more to round out your computing experience.

2002-04-09 Per discussione Randy Kramer

If I have a Windows domain and want to add a linux box, do I need to have
 Samba installed on it.

No, your network and Linux box will work just fine without it -- the
Linux box can run a dhcp client and get the information it needs, or you
can specify the IP, Gateway IP, DNS IP(s), etc.

If you want to exchange files between the Linux and PC boxes, Samba may
be one of the more convenient ways (assuming you can install it without
too much difficulty).

What I do is run smbclient (or smbmount) (Samba clients rather than
servers) when I want to exchange some files with my Windows machine(s).
They have proved easy to install (for me) compared to trying to get a
Samba server working.

The SambaClient and SambaMount pages listed on this page might be
helpful:

Well, if you were using MandrakeSecurity Single Network Firewall to
protect a Windows Workstation I could answer; however, I believe
Microsoft is keeping the authentication process secret to prevent the
use of competing platforms.

The password encryption employed by Microsoft has a number of articles
on the net about how it can be decoded, and perhaps a few on how it can
be encoded. Samba does nicely in keeping up with the CIFS password
encryption, but the authentication on the proxy server, IIRC, is
supposed to detect Microsoft platforms, just like their own version of
Kerberos.

May I suggest asking this question on the expert list? More SAs are on
that list who may have had the same experience, though most of them
probably put linux on the server first.

Hi Mike, my experience has shown that if all you want to do is connect to the internet then you don't need
samba. But, if you want the linux box to see shares on the windows boxes and share some files or partitions of it's

[newbie] SAMBA / Permissions

2002-04-09 Per discussione T.

Hi,

System:

LM8.2
Samba 2.2.3a

Samba works perfect under the current setup. I have a simple share level
system where remote machines login as nobody:nogroup.

However, my local user mike cannot write to these areas.

They have access to two areas: /home/public and /home/image

   4 drwxrwxr-x2 nobody nogroup 4096 Apr 7 19:54 image/
   4 drwxr-xr-x 32 mike mike 4096 Apr 10 08:18 mike/
   4 drwxrwxr-x 10 nobody nogroup 4096 Apr 8 15:06 public/

as you can see I: chmod -R g+w /home/image /public

and I added user mike to group nogroup.

According to my limited knowledge this should now work. However, user
mike still cannot write to either of the directories.

Any ideas?

T.

Thanks for the info, but alas, I've obviously done something horribly wrong
somewhere.

When I typed glxinfo into a terminal, there is nothing but zeros and it
says extension GLX missing on display :0.0

When I typed /sbin/lsmod into a terminal, the NVdriver was nowhere to be
seen.

Then I typed modprobe NVdriver into the terminal. Nothing happened. I
tried tuxracer and it wouldn't start. I looked at the /etc/modules.conf file
and the alias you suggested is already showing there.\

Any other ideas?

I do appreciate the help.

If no NVdriver in lsmod, as root type: modprobe NVdriverand try out
tuxracer. If it works, then fix the alias in /etc/modules.conf to read:
 alias /dev/nvidia* NVdriver

we'll just take it from there, if that don't fix you up, come on back.

Re: [newbie] how do I change make GNOME the default windowing system

2002-04-09 Per discussione Michael

First it depends on how you login to your X sessions: a) from a console
(terminal) or b) from a GUI login.

if a) do you use startx or xtart?

if b) Depends on the default login manager you use. If you use the KDE one, then
it is just a slot with a reveal button and each user (root included) can select
which desktop they like. The one you used in the last session will be the one
used for the next until you select another at login time. If you use the Gnome
one then it is setup in a config file (which i dont know as i use the KDE one).

If you are still having probs then perhaps you should supply more information
for the list to assist. Usually too much info is more help than not enough.

Yeah, I've just switched to KDE 3.0, which I like better than Gnome 1.4.
Perhaps Gnome 2.0 will be better. I usually prefer Gnome as I find it faster
